The Culver City Chamber of Commerce, incorporated August 27, 1921, is celebrating 90 years of serving the Culver City business community this year by our continuing tradition of serving the entire community.
he Culver City Chamber of Commerce, incorporated August 27, 1921, is celebrating 90 years of serving the Culver City business community this year by our continuing tradition of serving the entire community. The Chamber’s involvement in encouraging Culver City’s economic growth not only benefits the business community but has brought hundreds of million dollars of tax revenue to increase public services as well as creating cultural icons that continue to exist today. Examples include the Fiesta La Ballona and Culver City Sister City Committee. From the beginning, the Culver City Chamber supported important legislation like the original sewer bonds in 1921 and the city’s first sign ordinance in 1927. That same year, the city engaged the Chamber to assist in advertising the city. As Culver City grew so did the Chamber! In the 1930s your Culver City Chamber celebrated movie openings like “Tom Sawyer Days,” which starred a young man named Tom Kelly, who went on to teach at the Culver City Junior High School (now Middle School). The Chamber in a public relations move pushed for the city to receive credit for movies made in our town. It became such a passionate issue, some suggested renaming Culver City to Hollywood! (Chamber stationery read “Culver City, where Hollywood movies are made.”) This move ended with a 1937 “burying the hatchet” ceremony at Grauman’s Chinese Theater. During this decade the Chamber supported very early the concept of the Marina del Rey that eventually started construction in 1959.

During the 1940’s, the Chamber worked to maintain the viability of the business community by assisting the war efforts of local manufacturers such as Hughes Aircraft and Douglas Aircraft. The end of the WWII brought the return of GIs from the war with the planned expansion of our retail sector through the construction of the Culver Center in the early 1950s. The end of the wartime moratorium on building also helped Chamber president Adolph Steller to lead the way for Sam Hayden to establish the first industrial tract in Culver City. The Hayden Tract has since undergone redevelopment and is wellknown for its upscale architecture and services. The Chamber began the original Fiesta La Ballona Parade and Fiesta with merchant sales, costume contests, beard growing and the infamous “Pokey.”
Recognizing the need to support great public education, the business community initiated the Teacher of the Year Award at the annual Welcome to New Teachers Luncheon at beginning of each school year. With the growth of jet travel in the 1960s along with the Mexico City Olympics in 1964 the Chamber started a Sister City Committee to help host the Japanese Volleyball Team from Kaizuka, Japan. Following that visit Mayor Dan Patacchia, an active Chamber past chair, and Chamber members went on an inaugural trip to our first Sister City.
The maturing of Culver City brought needed redevelopment in the 1970s, in which the chamber has been an active participant. The first major project was the Fox Hills Mall, now Westfield Culver City, the revitalization of downtown plus a number of car dealerships. Culver City’s Costco and Symantec are also redevelopment successes. During these years of economic growth the Culver City Chamber supported all the tax revenue elections facing the city and school district to ensure the revenue necessary to support the services that we all find necessary to create a forward-looking community with the needed revenue stream. The future is bright for the Culver City Chamber of Commerce, moving to new offices at Westfield Culver City allows us to continue our mission of "Connecting Culver City Business to the world and the world to Culver City." The future is ahead of us all, your Culver City Chamber looks forward to the challenges of change and the opportunities that change brings.

“Where Hollywood
FILM
in Culver City
Simply put, Hollywood stole the spotlight!
S
ure, Hollywood had a big sign in the hills, plenty of glitz and glamour and even a studio or two, but what the rest of the world knew as “Hollywood” movies were really filmed right here in Culver City. From the Ince Studios to the Hal Roach Studios to the merger that created MetroGoldwyn-Mayer, the granddaddy of them all, Culver City spent much of the 1920s churning out movie after movie, many of them labeled “Made in Hollywood.” This loss of identity clearly rubbed local residents the wrong way. So much so that the city’s newspaper, the Citizen, ran a contest in 1934 to rename the city to recognize its contribution to the motion picture industry. Entries included “Filmville” and “Cinema City,” and the Chamber of Commerce later called for a drive to change the name to Hollywood, eventually adopting the slogan, “Culver City, Where Hollywood Movies are Made.” In 1936, Culver City adopted an official city seal bearing the words, “Heart of Screenland,” a moniker the city retains to this day.

And while the Culver City and Hollywood Chambers of Commerce “buried the hatchet” in a ceremony at Grauman's Chinese Theatre in 1937, many movies actually made in Culver City retained the “Made in Hollywood” up until the early 1990s when Sony Pictures Entertainment agreed to label every film made in Culver City as “Filmed at Sony Pictures Studios, Culver City, CA.” Credit or not, no one would argue that Culver City was and continues to be the Heart of Screenland. In its heyday, MGM had 5,000 employees, six working lots and 30 sound stages on 185 acres. The studio created a host of stars from Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford to Clark Gable and Jean Harlow. It had a casting office that handled more than 12,000 calls a day and even its own zoo! MGM filmed such blockbuster hits as “The Wizard of Oz” (1939), “Mutiny on the Bounty” (1935) and “Show Boat” (1953) in Culver City. Just down the road, at what is now The Culver Studios, a variety of studio incarnations, including Ince Studios, David O. Selznick Studios, RKO and Desilu produced some of the greatest movies and television shows of all time. Orson Welles’ classic "Citizen Kane" (1941), the original “King Kong" with Fay Wray (1933), Alfred Hitchcock's first American film, "Rebecca" (1940), and yes, the

unforgettable "Gone With the Wind" (1939) all came to life in Culver City. Likewise, Culver City was home to such early television classics such as The Andy Griffith Show, Hogan's Heroes, The Untouchables, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, Lassie and Gomer Pyle. Though the names have changed, the city’s dedication to the motion picture industry has not. Sony Pictures Entertainment, which purchased what was left of the old MGM lot in 1990, continues to be an entertainment leader creating hit movies year after year and pushing the envelope with its digital creativity. Through Sony Pictures Imageworks, the state-of-the-art visual effects and animation unit of Sony Pictures Digital Productions, the studio is known for live-action visual effects and character animation, all-CG animation, and stereoscopic 3D imagery. Likewise, The Culver Studios is one of the country’s most popular venues for shooting music videos, commercials and television shows. The studio was home to NBC's game show sensation Deal or No Deal, America's Next Top Model, NBC's The Starter Wife and The Bonnie Hunt Show. Currently the hit show Cougar Town is being filmed on the lot and also at various venues within the Culver City neighborhood. The Heart of Screenland, indeed.

What to See & Do you anywhere in Culver City and beyond. The bus line takes advantage of Culver City’s centralized location to link passengers with UCLA, Venice Beach and more. Scheduled to open in early 2012, the Expo Line will link Culver City, via light rail, to such destinations as USC, Exposition Park, the Coliseum and Downtown Los Angeles.
Check In With a number of hotel options including Courtyard by Marriott (courtyardlawestside.com), DoubleTree by Hilton (doubletree.hilton.com/Culver-City), Travelodge (travelodgeculver.com) and Four Points by Sheraton (fourpoints.com/culvercity), there’s an option for every budget. But perhaps the city’s most interesting place to bed down for the night in the historic Culver Hotel (culverhotel.com). Built on the site of the city’s first movie theater and originally named Hotel Hunt, this city landmark has appeared in countless films and television productions, including everything from Little Rascals to The Wonder Years to Last Action Hero. Today, the hotel offers charming guestrooms filled with décor from the hotel’s early days in the 1920s and 1930s as well as lobby bar and restaurant – certainly a place to soak up the city’s rich film history.
Take A Hike Despite Southern California’s reputation as a place where a car is essential, Culver City is easy to explore on foot. Just east of the Culver Hotel sits the historic mansion

cultural and epicurean rebirth from Fox Hills to West Washington to the city’s eastern boundaries. No longer a place with nothing there, Culver City offers a myriad of activities and undiscovered gems for visitors and locals alike. Even 48 hours is not enough to dive into this increasingly interesting corner of Southern California, but you can give it a shot.
Get Your Bearings Just a stone’s throw from LAX, Culver City sits at the crossroads of the Westside. A short cab ride from the airport or a ride on Culver CityBus, the state’s second-oldest municipal bus line (just $1 per trip), will get

ust a decade ago, Culver City oozed that Mayberrry-esque aura of many small towns – an island surrounded by the seas of Los Angeles that was condescendingly called “quaint.” While the city grew up around the glitziest of industries, Culver City was the home of the people behind the camera – the gaffers, the grips and the cameramen who made the stars shine bright on the silver screen. It was a city whose streets rolled up at 8 p.m. and whose dining options were limited to a couple hole-in-the-wall joints only the locals patronized. But all that has changed. Along with the renaissance of Culver City’s Downtown area, the city has had a

building of The Culver Studios. Fronted by an expansive lawn, The Culver Studios (theculverstudios.com) is most commonly known as the place where Gone With the Wind was filmed. But over the years, the studio, founded in 1918, has been where mavericks from David O. Selznick to Orson Welles to Alfred Hitchcock have made movie magic. Still a working studio with state-ofthe-art technology, the studio has been used by recording artists such as the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Michael Jackson and Madonna and is the birthplace of such television hits as Baywatch, Mad About You and Deal or No Deal. Continue east for less than a mile and stumble upon one of the city’s many adaptive re-use projects, the Helms Bakery District

The Wende Museum (wendemuseum.org) in Fox Hill, is a collections-based research and educational organization that preserves more than 70,000 Cold War-era artifacts of material and visual culture, including East German espionage equipment, the longest stretch of the Berlin Wall outside of Germany, Soviet propaganda posters as well as Hungarian, Czech and Polish artifacts. The Mayme A. Clayton Library & Museum (claytonmuseum.org) houses on of the largest and most academically substantial independently held collection of objects, documents and memorabilia on African American history and culture. cuisine. But for a truly unique experience, try high tea at Royal/T (royal-t.org) at 8910 Washington Boulevard. Part restaurant, part art gallery, Royal/T is Southern California’s first Japanese-style cosplay café where tea is served by costumed Japanese “maids” and the food is equally unique.
