CREATIVE BRIEF BACKGROUND:
OBJECTIVES:
Entrepreneur and Co-founder of Myspace Jason Hirschhorn recently started publishing a newsfeed blog for media execs and tech insiders. The blog is in the early design and formatting stages and the following website proposal will offer thoughts and strategies on the execution and content of Hirschhorn’s newsletter.
The website proposal will pitch relevant content to include in the news feed as well as how the blog should be formatted. It will share news within the media/tech field and will also have more articles about the psychological approach to technology and how it is affecting human behavior.

DEADLINE:
TARGET AUDIENCE:
This blog should have an assertive tone that defines its content to be the most current and fascinating media news of the hour.
The deadline for the updates on this news feed should be at the end of summer 2012 and parallel the change of seasons.
The target demographic for Hirschhorn’s blog is anyone involved in the media production business or tech field interested in staying up to date on current events in the industry. The newsfeed is also aimed at anyone new to the media/tech business that is interested in learning more about the industry.

CREATIVE CONSIDERATIONS: The blog should have an option to be read in multiple languages to reach as wide an audience as possible and should also have social media icons and an RSS feed to expand the content to other areas of the web.
MEDIA: The medium used to present this industry newsfeed will be a blog that can be publicly viewed on the web.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS OVERVIEW The tech boom of the mid 1990s has yeilded a surplus of media moguls. Entreprenuers such as Jason Hirschhorn (Myspace co-founder), Matt Mullenweg (Wordpress founder), Michael Arrington (TechCrunch co-founder) and Craig Newmark (Craigslist founder) all began successful startups forever transforming the way we share news and connect through new media. Hirschhorn recently started a fresh newsfeed for media folk and tech insiders and is still in the process of formatting the content and appearance of the site. The following pages contain an analysis of the personal websites of each of these media moguls and how each compares and contrasts to the other.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS Jason Hirschhorn

Hirschhorn’s site resembles the standard layout of a newsfeed blog with links to archive or a personal profile. He has kept the content and appearance of the site fairly minimal with muted colors and internal links that keep the audience within the confines of the site. The articles generally carry an external link or two but the site itself has recently been reformatted and is still in the early stages of development. Hirschhorn has not ironed out all the bugs; for instance, the subscribe tab leads to a page with a long block of html code. Also his profile page lacks a home button. The only other external links on the page are Hirschhorn’s social media buttons, which consist of Facebook, Pandora and Twitter. Hirschhorn seems to have intentionally kept his site fairly limited on external links, purely focusing on content. The relevance of the content offered on Hirschhorn’s site, particulary the links to his twitter feed, @ mediaredefined and @jasonhirschhorn, have the most accurate and thorough media and tech related information of the four blogs being discussed.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS Matt Mullenweg
ma.tt
Matt Mullenweg’s site is the busiest of the four blogs but is still very sophisticated. The playful graphics and text panels use the three primary colors to catch the reader’s eye and maintain an unthreatening, youthful appearance. The site not only offers a series of interesting blog posts and essays, but also links to his current internetrelated projects. Additionally, Mullenweg includes a photo gallery (business and random), an about button and a contact button. Founder of Wordpress and fully utilizing the capabilities of his blogging platform, Mullenweg is a wellversed media mongul and his site demonstrates it with a brilliant array of media.

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS Michael Arrington

TechCrunch founder and serial entrepreneur, Michael Arrington has the most simple of the four blogs being reviewed. Entitled “Uncrunched,” the blog features a newsfeed in the body with an image reading “unpaid blogger” in the head. The foot of the website displays Arrington’s twitter activity, recent blog posts and an about description with several external social media links. Aside from these elements, the site basically resembles an RSS feed. Arrington keeps the site clean and simple to direct focus to the main content on the page.

COMPETATIVE ANALYSIS Craig Newmark

Craigslist founder, Craig Newmark, maintains a more informative website with a blog feature. It has the most elements in the navigation bar out of the four sites including an about tab (meet craig), a blog, issues (philanthropic projects), press (news) and connect with Craig (contact). The site is laid out in a user friendly way and most of the content in the blog revolves around media topics that aim to better society. Newmark’s committment to helping people connect and learn through new media and technology is apparent on his site, but the background color scheme is a bit like wallpaper and could use an update.

PERSONA #1 The Entrepreneur BACKGROUND:
WEB USE AND INFORMATION NEEDS:
Robert Fletcher, 55 is a Business and Technology Columnist at Newsweek in New York, NY. He also runs a small online business with his wife that distributes media-related news. He has been married for over 20 years and just recently saw both of his kids graduate from college. Robert’s education consists of a Bachelors in Business Administration and an MBA in Finance and Entrepreneurship.
Robert is a competent web user and sees it as a tool to grow his business. He is on the web regularly checking email, newsfeeds and industry-related articles to stay up to date on tech events and stock prices. He is also involved in the most common social media networks like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. He runs into the typical frustrations such as popup ads and being inundated with too much information. Although Robert is an advanced internet researcher, he finds that staying up to date on the current trends and applications for mobile applications to be difficult. His frequent sources of information revolve around Twitter which consolidates much of his preferred online news sources like The Wall Street Journal, Digital Trends and The Daily Beast.
LIFESTYLE: Robert makes a point to read about the everevolving media business for at least two hours a day from sources like New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Huffington Post. He goes out to eat with his wife once a week and enjoys spending time with his two kids, both college graduates, that live in upstate New York. His ultimate goal is to sustain his small consulting business while maintaining a balance with his family life.

PERSONA #2 The College Student BACKGROUND: Josie Price is a 20 year old college student pursuing a Bachelors in Studio Art. She has a casual dating life and has two cats as roommates. Josie has one older brother (28) who is engaged and her parents are divorced.
LIFESTYLE: Josie hangs out with friends on the weekends and enjoys creative outlets like cooking and painting. She is fascinated by the web and its capabilities but is unsure how to approach it or make it applicable to her fine art background. She stays in close touch with both of her parents while away at college and has a good relationship with her older brother. Her ultimate goal is to finish her BA and apply to graduate school to study digital media. After finishing school she hopes to become capable of harnessing what the web has to offer to build a career in media production.

WEB USE AND INFORMATION NEEDS: Josie has developed an interest in the web and is very hungry for more information. She is involved in various social media networks and is constantly reading blogs and twitters feeds. She is fairly competent on the web and feels a need to stay up to date with her peers by maintaining a solid understanding of the internet and where its going. She gets frustrated by the numerous amount of social media and clubs one is expected to engage in. She still prefers one-on-one interaction with people instead of meeting and staying in touch online. Josie finds it difficult to seek out genuine events and meetups online that involved like-mind people like herself. Her frequent sources of information include Target.com, Dailycandy.com and Pintrest along with any magazine related to food or the arts like Communication Arts or Food & Wine.

PERSONA #3 The House Wife BACKGROUND Melinda Thompson is a 42 year old stay at home mom. She is happily married with three children: Joey three, Phil six and Samantha eight. She studied Pychology and aquired a Bachelors in Science before marrying her husband shortly thereafter.
LIFESTYLE: Melinda’s daily activities revolve around taking care of her three kids while maintaining a clean, well-kept house. Instead of watching the daily soap operas she tunes into news shows and documentaries. She loves going to the movies with her family when she gets a chance. She also plays poker with her friends down the street on Tuesdays. Melinda’s ultimate goal is to raise her children and give them a solid family foundation while supporting and loving her working husband.

WEB USE AND INFORMATION NEEDS: Melinda gets on the web when she has time to check for Facebook and Twitter updates. She plays online poker games occasionally and gets news updates by following twitter users like @ Wisebread and @PsychToday. Her web competency is average as she uses it to stay relevant and have conversation pieces. She runs into frustrations online with the rate at which cable companies change their prices and formats and how they offer web service. She uses Ebay and Amazon often for the best local prices on organic food and children’s’ clothes but does not always find this information easily.
