and engaged parent organizations I have ever experienced. The support they provide through the many events they manage, from the Cougar Cup to the upcoming Sweetheart Dance, is impactful for our students, athletes, faculty, and parents on a daily basis. And to realize all of these accomplishments happened in the midst of a worldwide pandemic is astonishing. Credit goes to the heart and strength of the Brookstone Community.

Dear Brookstone Families, In 2015, six years ago, I joined the Brookstone family. At the time, I described the opportunity as my dream job, and I continue everyday to be honored and humbled to be the head of this exceptional school. Most every day I marvel at what is accomplished by our students, faculty, and staff. Each year as our students celebrate acceptance into universities, I am reminded of the importance and significance of Brookstone to our students and to our larger community. When summer begins each year, I watch faculty travel to professional development opportunities, pack a bus with students for travel, or head to the field to prepare to win the next championship. I admire their pursuit to improve and to serve so selflessly in providing the absolute best for our students. What I have witnessed are multiple state championships in tennis, golf, fine arts, and cross country; we’ve had Page One winners, won backto-back One Act state championships, implemented Global Online Academy to stretch our academic offerings, and added the Blanchard Leadership Institute to further develop our students into the leaders the world needs. We have strengthened our commitment to the health of every child by introducing a wellness program that includes drug testing for our 8-12th grade students and a robust counseling program focused on student well-being in grades 3K through 12. Our Brookstone Parent Association continues to be one of the most active

2

BROOKSTONE SCHOOL

I am even more encouraged about what lies ahead. Enrollment has grown each year, and the application process appears strong for the coming year. We have just begun construction on a new athletic stadium that will serve our entire student body and community for years to come. We are in the planning process and soon will pursue a campaign to build the finest Lower School in the southeast as well as address other priorities identified through our strategic planning process as we position our school for even greater things. Brookstone is building on its mission to serve our students and their families and providing many answers to Why Brookstone? Thank you for your loyalty and support of Brookstone’s mission. Exciting times are ahead. Sincerely,

F. Martin Lester Jr. Head of Upper School

BE THE ONE

In the fall, we had over 300 alums and their families on campus during Homecoming weekend for many reunions, including those classes who were not able to gather in person last year. Speaking of alums, the Distinguished Alumni Society welcomed five inductees in the 2020-2021 class. Lulie Wallace ‘05, Jim Whitehurst ‘85, Lauren Amos ‘97, Foster Northrop ‘81, and Kyes Stevens ‘91 all have amazing stories, rich with success and unquestionably positive impacts on the lives of others. They represent Brookstone so well and stand as examples of what we aspire for Brookstone graduates. The Blanchard Leadership Institute was in full swing last fall conducting our first in person Sprint for all students K-12. The Servant Leadership Veterans Day Celebration was incredible; students had the opportunity to invite family and friends who are Veterans to be honored for their service. The event was on the Jordan Quadrangle where over 50 Veterans joined, and our students presented moving and inspiring speeches.

I hope you were able to enjoy some time during the holiday break to share with family, to rest from a busy fall, and to recharge your batteries as we head into what will be a busy spring semester. You may have heard it said that “the days pass slowly but the years go flying by.” Those words seem so true today and even more so over the last couple of years. The world we live in is ever-changing and has a way of stretching us thin and wearing us down. We each face our own personal, professional, and educational challenges in our lives every day, and most of us carry the burden of the challenges facing those we love, as well. It is amazing how those battles can make each day feel slow and long, but somehow, we look back and the year has come and gone so quickly. If we are not careful, we will miss the joy and success each year has brought. Well, I do not want the year to pass us by without acknowledging the amazing students, parents, alums, faculty, and staff who accomplished so much and who make Brookstone so special. Allow me to start by expressing my gratitude to the families who support their students’ success in school and support the school in so many ways. Many serve our parent association which is responsible for the exceptional activities on campus including the recent Book Fair that was back in person in the Kirven building and of which Fox Elementary was the beneficiary. A huge thank you also goes to the Brookstone faculty and administration. While much of life has returned to normal since the pandemic started, this group has had to continually adjust, make tough decisions, and fight for the best student experience possible. While we continue to face challenges related to the pandemic, this group has been successful in preserving that experience; their unfailing commitment to the students continues to inspire and set an example for others.

Our students had a busy fall excelling in so many areas. In November, and for the 3rd time in a row, our One Act cast won region with this year’s performance of The Miss Firecracker Contest; The Jungle Book Middle School musical was a considerable success, and Brookstone received a first-time invitation to compete in the American High School Special Theatre called the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. Congratulations are due to four athletes who signed during first semester to play their sport in college: Molly Gales (softball), Lisa Hollingsworth (softball), Coates Massey (baseball), and Pate Stansell (golf). Now, back to the years flying by… This year, Brookstone celebrates its 70th anniversary! That will be 50 classes of graduates! That is 25,550 days, most of which were filled with teaching, inspiring, challenging, and helping students grow. 70 years is a major milestone, one that should be celebrated and will be celebrated throughout the remainder of the year, culminating with the Class of 2022 graduation. I know the families of our senior class are wondering where the years have gone as their students have begun their final semester in high school! It is one of the most exciting times in the life of a student and their families, and we are all glad to get to share a few more months with them. I am grateful to be a small part of the Brookstone story, and I am grateful all of you are a part of that story, as well. We all look forward to seeing you on campus this spring. Sincerely,

William R. Blanchard Chairman, Board of Trustees

ifty Years. This year, Brookstone will graduate the 50th class of students. Half a century connects Brookstone students and alumni, and I struggle with the feeling that the distance between 1972 and 2022 is both a lifetime and no time at all. As I look back through yearbooks, I can’t help but chuckle at how different things seemed in the beginning. Did you know the first classes at Brookstone had water skiing as a part of PE? How did they swing that?! The girls of the Class of 1981 teamed up and refused to

6

BROOKSTONE SCHOOL

I truly feel connected to all of these 50 classes. It’s easy to start up a conversation with any of these people. The older I get, the more I’m aware of the traditions, both small and large, that have been passed down from class to class within the Brookstone family. They tie us together and give us strong common ground. Our stories may appear different at first glance, but the traditions that bind us also strengthen our culture and our community. Traditions have purpose. They are comforting; they bring a sense of security and remind us that the world keeps on turning, no matter what appears on the horizon. They tie us to those who came before and provide a forum to celebrate our values. They connect generations and weave the fabric of group bonds between people who have never met. We are blessed to be part of a school with rich history and many traditions. The pioneers of the first graduating class of 1972 instituted a

Homecoming Spirit Week, all dressing as babies and riding tricycles around campus. We’ve all had our Spirit Weeks since then. The class of 1973 continued and added to the tradition, crowning Brookstone’s first Homecoming Queen, Laura Holliday. This year, I watched little girls stare spell-bound through the fence around the football field as we crowned our 2021 Queen. By the late 1970s, the Brookstone community had experienced deep tragedy and loss, and in their grief, established ways to forever honor their fallen students, including the Timothy Baldwin Tarpley Award, which is now the annual tradition of honoring a teacher who has consistently and unselfishly devoted themselves to the interest of Brookstone and its students. We play football on the Rex Knight Field, soaking in the beautiful Georgia evenings, standing on ground dedicated to a Brookstone student from long ago who would have loved to see us there. We walk the sidewalks, glancing into the windows of the Lower School classrooms that are part of our core memories, now filled with students happily beginning their journeys. So many Brookstone traditions are present all around us, and we watch with delight as new generations add to our histories. We should be proud of all that has changed and all that has stayed the same.

e are excited to announce Brookstone’s plans to construct a new Athletic Complex designed to meet the growing needs of our successful Cougar athletic teams and our school community as a whole. The current stadium, constructed in the early 70s, has served Brookstone School for almost 50 years. While for some time Brookstone has talked about the need for improvements to the facility, we now have a broader vision for a complex that will include a new natural turf field, a new eight lane track, LED lighting, a stadium plaza much like the baseball and tennis plaza, new home and away grandstands, and upgraded press box and concessions. A part of this project that has already been completed is the LED video scoreboard donated by the Amos family and installed before the first game of the 2020 football season. These improvements will become a perfect host for football, soccer, and track and field as well as serve as a gathering place for many school events. The funding for the new complex is being provided fully by special gifts to the school without impacting Brookstone’s operating budget. This $6 million dollar project would not be possible without generous donors who chose to invest in the lives of our students. Their commitment to Brookstone is humbling and is what makes our school special among independent schools. Groundbreaking for the project began in earnest early February, and we will watch the new facility take shape throughout the spring with an expected completion by the first home football game in the fall. The logistics of several school activities will be impacted during the construction phase. Look for specific details surrounding these activities. Brasfield-Gorrie will lead this construction project, one that will provide for our students an elite facility where they can compete at the highest level. Building the Athletic Complex now is a perfect way to celebrate Brookstone’s 70th anniversary. This new complex will strengthen our athletic programs, dramatically improve the student athlete experience, enhance the experience of visitors to our campus, and elevate the culture of pride and school spirit throughout the community. We are excited to be a part of this community’s teamwork in making this vision a reality.

FOREST FRIDAYS: PURE BROOKSTONE MAGIC spacious amphitheater, and Mr. Sam Pate’s cabin full of natural wonders, many from his remarkable former classroom.

WRITTEN BY: ANNA FLOURNOY ‘98

“Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all?” The legendary Mr. Sam Pate taught legions of Brookstone students this Barred Owl call in his ornithology classes. During his 35 years at Brookstone School, Mr. Sam Pate instilled a love for birding in the youngest and the oldest students alike. Lower School students delighted in dissecting owl pellets to find mice bones, while Upper School students enjoyed studying frozen owls in his classroom’s freezer, learning legendary tales of spotting rare birds and taking field trips to Wakulla Springs, FL. Mr. Sam Pate’s spirit and his passion for birding live on thanks to the new Forest Fridays outdoor educational program in the Lower School, a brainchild of Señora Brooke Schneider and Ms. Taylor Turner, who felt that the 40 acres of the Roaring Branch campus would provide an ideal setting for hands-on learning and meaningful experiences in nature. Learning through a pandemic has sparked creativity for these teachers and many others who deeply value educational opportunities outside the classroom. What better time than during a season of pandemic to be outside learning, having fun in nature, and fueling students’ intellectual curiosity? While researching Forest Friday curriculum models, Sra. Schneider discovered Instagram-er Ginny Yurich, a mother dedicated to getting her children off devices and out in nature for at least 1,000 hours per year (@1000hoursoutside). Thanks to this light-bulb idea, along with the support of Mrs. Javonne Stewart, Mrs. Billie Flowers, and Mrs. Deana Graham (“Mama D”), Forest Fridays have quickly evolved into a highlight of the school week for students and teachers alike. As Mama D shared, “I often have parents tell me that their child does not want to be checked out early on any Fridays because they do not want to miss Forest Fridays.” On Forest Fridays, Lower School students trek to the Roaring Branch campus to enjoy wildlife talks and demonstrations. Tucked into the cross country trail, the Roaring Branch campus features a secluded chapel, a

14

BROOKSTONE SCHOOL

On Friday, November 5th, Mrs. Nan Pate helped orchestrate a memorable Forest Friday and loving homage to Mr. Sam Pate. Wife of 41 years and beloved former Brookstone teacher of 42 years, Mrs. Pate asked several Brookstone alumni and former students of Mr. Sam Pate’s to research a particular owl and present interesting information to the Lower School students. Students learned many stories about Mr. Sam Pate: once, he took a trip to Cape Cod to photograph a Snowy Owl, only to discover that one had landed on a church steeple in Opelika, AL, while he was away. Many young Cougars were surprised to learn that Harry Potter’s famous owl Hedwig is actually a female because of her spots. Ashley Turner ‘98, who earned a Masters degree in Wildlife Ecology and Management from Warnell School of Forestry, presented the Barn Owl and told an entertaining story about Mr. Sam Pate finding a whitefaced Barn Owl (not to be confused with the Barred Owl) on a farm near Eufaula, AL. Unfortunately, when he entered the silo to photograph it, the owl attacked him and tore his brand new shirt! Ashley credits her former teacher with inspiring her to go into wildlife ecology. She remembers, “As a Lower Schooler, I loved hearing about his outdoor adventures and getting outside on what felt like a huge, wild campus. As an Upper Schooler, I enjoyed his teaching style—he was so effective that we thought we were in his class to have fun, not realizing we were learning even more than bird identification and hearing nature stories. I know for a fact that he inspired generations of his students to be observant and curious about the nature around them for the rest of their lives, no matter what profession they pursued.” Mrs. Nan Pate and talented teachers spent countless hours preparing creative ways to teach the children and honor the memory of Mr. Sam Pate. Mrs. Billie Flowers taught the students an original song to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle:

We are here to celebrate The life of our great, Mr. Sam Pate. He was truly one of a kind, Encouraging all to grow their minds. We are here to celebrate The life of our great, Mr. Sam Pate. This song along with the beautiful Ofrenda created by Sra. Schneider and her students brought tears to many eyes. The Ofrenda or “offering” in honor of the Spanish celebration Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) honored Mr. Sam Pate with rocks students had painted celebrating his character traits: “smart,” “compassionate,” “loved,” “kind,” “caring.” The owl presentations were upbeat along with a cheer to teach the children how to spell “Barred Owl.” Brookstone alumni presented six different owls with enlarged photographs taken by Mr. Sam Pate. Objects, including ketchup bottles and Gatorade bottles,

indicated the size and weight of each owl to provide students a visual representation. For the grand finale, Harrison Wallace ‘03 and Howard Jefferson ‘83 taught the famous Barred Owl call to the students. The chorus of “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you all,” would have made Mr. Sam Pate very proud and hopefully inspired students to call Barred Owls in their own backyards.

classrooms, second grader Gordy Scarborough exclaimed, “It’s just not fair.” When Mama D asked him why, Gordy responded, “It’s just not fair that Mr. Sam Pate is gone, and I have SO many questions for him.” While Mr. Sam Pate is no longer with us, his spirit lives on in the magic of Forest Fridays.

Mama D shared that while walking the students back to their

6TH ANNUAL BROOKSTONE UNDER THE LIGHTS In November, we held the sixth annual Brookstone Under the Lights, a much anticipated event each year. It’s an event especially for moms and their boys, but the best part of the night is the interaction between the youngest Cougars and members of our varsity football team. It’s such a fun evening for all those involved! As one of our teachers said, “This event always displays Why Brookstone? I love seeing our students of all ages interacting with each other! It’s a win for everyone!” Thanks to the BPA and the athletic department for their hard work in making it happen; it’s a special evening for sure. Go Cougars!

Once again, the Cougar Cup was a huge success, and we are grateful for our fabulous sponsors! The golf and tennis tournament was originally scheduled for October 4th, but rain caused us to move the tournament to October 18th. Thanks to Green Island Country Club and the Brookstone volunteers, a great day was had by all. Tracy Immelman and Gayla Arrington served as the devoted chairs for the fundraiser this year. There were around 50 parents and students who volunteered their time, and the tournament raised over $76,000 for Brookstone Athletics! Congratulations to our winners this year.

BROOKSTONE SEVEN BROOKSTONE STUDENTS HAVE CHOSEN TO PLAY COLLEGE ATHLETICS.

1.

Mansel Amos Mansell was a four-year scholar athlete, on the academic honor roll and in the outfield and infield and has pitched and caught for the Cougars. During his football career he had 48 tackles and 2 interceptions. Mansell earned recognition as the Defensive Player of the week and the Mr. Hustle award. He was also selected to the All Region team in his senior year.

2.

Molly Gayles was a four-year starter for Cougar softball. She was selected All-Region/All-Area and All-State her junior and senior seasons. Molly was named the Area 2 Offensive Player of the Year as a junior, and she was also selected to the 1st team Ledger-Enquirer All-Bi-City as a junior and senior. As a senior, Molly hit .549, with 9 doubles, 3 triples, 3 HRs, and 34 RBIs.

3.

Liza Hollingsworth started for the Cougars for three years in center field. She was selected 1st team All-State and All-Region as a senior after earning All-Region as a sophomore, junior, and senior. She was also named 2nd team LedgerEnquirer All-Bi-City as a junior. As a senior, Liza hit .511 with 7 doubles, 3 triples, 17 stolen bases, and 38 runs scored.

4.

Coates Massey has been a member of the Cougar baseball program for six years. Due to the pandemic, he missed out on most of his sophomore year but made the most of his junior season. Coates was named All-Region and AllState as a junior after finishing the year 5-3 with a 2.10 ERA. Coates also struck out 70 batters in 53.1 innings. He will be following in his dad’s footsteps at Columbus State where his dad played and later served as an assistant coach.

5.

Luke Norman has been a four year starter for Cougar baseball. During his Upper School career, he has played in the outfield, infield, pitched, and also caught for the Cougars. Luke has a 2.67 ERA on the mound, 5 saves as the Cougar closer, and led the team in homerooms with 5 for the season in 2021. In addition to baseball, Luke has played football for Brookstone for the past four years and plays travel baseball with Team Georgia.

6.

Pate Stansell has really blossomed as a golfer the past two years. He really began to focus on golf during the quarantine months and sharpened his skills. As a junior, he finished with a scoring average of 77 including 12 of 16 rounds in the 70s. His low round of the season was a 68, and he shot 72 to finish second in the area tournament held at Green Island Country Club. Pate was a key member of last year’s 1A Private state runner-up team and will be counted on to help lead this year’s group.

7.

Eva Sullivan was a starter on the Cougar volleyball team for the past 3 years. She recorded 350 kills and 151 aces in her career as a varsity player. This year Eva is the Senior Captain of the team and also serves as one of the Upper School Athletic Head Prefects. She was selected 2020 All Bi-City Second Team and 2021 All-Area Team. We are extremely proud of this group and look forward to celebrating several additional studentathletes who will sign in the spring. Last year, over 13% of our senior class achieved this goal, and we anticipate being close to that percentage again this year. Seeing members of our athletic teams reach their goals of playing in college is very exciting for the Brookstone community and very rewarding for our coaching staff. Congratulations to these seven student athletes!

VETERANS DAY CELEBRATION WRITTEN BY: MEGHAN BLACKMON, ‘98

On Thursday morning, November 11, 2021, the Brookstone School family gathered in the Jordan Quadrangle with honored guests to celebrate and thank our Veterans. Against the backdrop of the Bell Tower and a field of paper poppies created by Upper and Middle School students, the student-led assembly included musical performances and remarks from children or grandchildren of Veterans, highlighting the importance of the day and what our Veterans mean to us all. Please enjoy some excerpts from our students’ remarks:

Sam Cellino, 2nd Grade Sam is the grandson of Vietnam Veteran Charles H. Ford, Jr, and tells his grandfather’s story. ...the only protection was to drop down to the wet ground. I asked him how he knew which way to go and what to do when he was down, and he said, “Someone had to stand up and figure things out and then direct everybody else.” I said, “Wasn’t that dangerous?” And he said, “Yes, but that was my job. I had to do my job.”

GRACE FARRAR

Evangeline Gutierrez, 5th Grade ...my father, Hector Edwardo Gutierrez…served 17 years in the US Army. He received 2 purple hearts for being shot in the line of duty, 2 bronze stars for service in a hostile environment, and 1 bronze star for valor. Thanks to my dad, SFC Gutierrez, and all of the other Veterans we honor today, I live in freedom…

Ella Keirsey, 6th Grade Ella had multiple family members to serve in the military, but the one she knows best is her dad, JD Keirsey. I am so proud to be a part of a military family. I think you can see that Veterans are really great at helping people and doing hard things. I am so thankful I’ve been able to have so many amazing experiences because my family chose to serve.

Evan Chen, 11th Grade My father served for eleven years in the Air Force, retiring in 2017 as a lieutenant colonel… Veterans Day isn’t just a day for veterans; it’s a day for all Americans. It’s a day to remember why they were fighting and a day for all of us to begin our journey of protecting our freedom and the freedom of many future generations.

THE BLANCHARD LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE WRITTEN BY: AVERY WOLFF, ‘91 At Brookstone, we are fostering a culture of continuous growth. Whether you are a teacher, administrator, or student, we are providing the tools and the methodology for our Brookstone family to become what TDE (The Developmental Edge) calls deliberately developmental. Though our entire faculty and all Middle and Upper School students experienced a Sprint in 2021, health protocols caused it to be a virtual experience using Zoom. This year, thankfully, we were able to conduct all Sprints™ in person, which made a world of difference. Though the concepts were the same, being able to interact together in person was simply better in every way. Brookstone was the first school in the world to introduce this to students. That’s not a hyperbole; it’s true. This methodology and process has been used by TDE in companies, corporations, and even educational institutions all over the world, but it has never been used with students. What we are doing is groundbreaking and innovative (another reason – Why Brookstone?), and every time we do it, we learn and grow in order to improve upon it the next time. For this Sprint™, we decided to give our students a focus. They had to choose an improvement goal related to Getting Better at Connecting to Others. We gave them a more specific framework from which to work, so we think it was more effective in many ways. And the feedback seems to bear that out. Here are some of the insights our Upper School students gleaned:

34

BROOKSTONE SCHOOL

If I am more perceptive, considerate, and aware of other people’s feelings, I will form better, longer lasting, and meaningful relationships. If I form solid sleep habits, I will still be able to keep up with others socially. I won’t miss out on anything by choosing to value my sleep time. Don’t be afraid of what others will think–it’s usually not as bad as we think. After someone tells me something, I’ll say, “Let me make sure I understand. You’re saying, ...” Talking to people can make their day. Being able to share my experiences with my group members and hearing their experiences helped me look at my Sprint from a different perspective. A different perspective…isn’t that indicative of growth? Thinking about your thinking, challenging the way you view situations, being vulnerable with others…these things are not easy to do at any age, but they are specifically difficult for teenagers. So, we could not be more pleased at the seeds being planted and the growth happening in our students, slowly but surely, as they undergo this process once in the fall and again in the spring each year. It could simply be transformative.
