hat started out as a light dusting of snow on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014 turned into nearly 4 ½ inches of snow by the next day. The Salem-Keizer School District along with other surrounding school districts closed schools, cancelling several activities planned for the weekend of Feb. 7-8 including the King of Hearts dance. The dance has been rescheduled from Feb. 28. Treacherous roads made travel limited. As a result of weather conditions the City of Salem mandated that vehicles be equiped with traction tires or chains until noon on Sunday, Feb. 8. Many people suffered from ‘cabin fever,’ restlessness due to confinement indoors. Cabin fever moved South Salem students Mikela Rayburn ‘14 and Camille Barisin ‘14 to record several songs including an improvised cover of “Falling Slowly” by Once.

he prevalence of obesity in America has nearly tripled in the last 40 years. Consumers of high-profile food products have complained about how portion sizes are continuously getting larger, and how growing portions are a factor in the weight gain epidemic. As of 2010, many popular food brands such as Kellogg’s, Coca Cola, Pepsi and Hershey’s participated in a pledge to cut up to 250 million calories out of their products every year. They were challenged to do this by the Robert Wood Johnson foundation, a research organization with the goal of improving health in America. “If major food companies cut out calories from their

food brands. Many have cut their calories by marketing smaller portions, fat-free or lower calorie options and producing healthier alternatives, including baked instead of fried foods. Market studies have even shown that healthier products have had higher sales than the unhealthy options. “I think this idea is great. People will start to gradually have healthier lifestyles because of this change,” said Rachel Scheuermann ‘16. So far, the food industry has cut almost four times as many calories that they had pledged at the beginning of the campaign, and it is estimated by the Robert Wood Johnson foundation that they will cut 1.5 trillion calories by 2015.

he Bush Barn Art Center is currently featuring an exhibition of artifacts, collections and art installations honoring the Wunderkammer revival that will be on display until Feb. 22. “Wunderkammer,” literally means ‘Wonder Chamber’ in German and is used to describe the art of creating collections of scientific or otherwise interesting specimens and artifacts. A similar phrase used for this art is ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’. These wonder chambers were originally large rooms full of tagged and inventoried taxidermy animals, dried plants, preserved insects, art, antiques or other interesting objects that scholars or collectors would learn about and study. The curator of the exhibition at Bush Barn, Catherine Alexander, said, “Cabinets of curiosity used to be enormous rooms that you could walk into with the person who had been collecting all of those years.” A large portion of the contributions are from the Mount Angel Abbey Museum. The college and seminary that were founded at the Mount Angel Abbey in 1888 began the collection of interesting specimens and objects. Much of the collection originated mostly from monks who had moved or died and left their few worldly possessions and collections behind. In 1926, a catastrophic fire wiped out the majority of the collected artifacts. However, shortly thereafter, the museum began receiving donations from other museums and private collectors in response to the lost artifacts, including a large donation from the Smithsonian in New York. The original arrangement of the Abbey Museum was more like a Cabinet of Curiosities than the standard series of rooms with glass display cases and name tags; any visitor could walk in to feel and interact with the artifacts. Brother Andre Love, curator of the museum, said, “it was beautiful—it was a

microcosm of the universe.” The current exhibition at the Bush Barn also includes many art pieces that are demonstrative of the beauty of the Wunderkammer revival. Several artists came together to show their skills in all mediums, putting together their personal ‘wunderkammer’ using everything from memories and childhood memorabilia, to painted macaroni sculptures and book manuscripts dipped in thick layers of wax. Though they may sound like odd additions to the exhibition, the various art pieces invoke the power behind observation, collecting and the passage of time. The weekend of Feb 1-2, a similar event called “Curious Gallery” was held at the Portland DoubleTree hotel, also celebrating the Wunderkammer revival. Attendees participated in workshops such as figure drawing, listened to presentations from Oregon’s Fish and Wildlife services, watched tribal bellydancers, and perused the mercantile for items usable in terrariums and collections as well as art and wearable fancies. Lupa, the mononymous founder of Curious Gallery, author of several books on shamanism and owner of a neo-pagan crafts business, The Green Wolf, said, “Curious Gallery is a two-day arts festival celebrating the wunderkammer revival. We offer an opportunity for those interested in cabinets of curiosity and their contents to share knowledge and resources. More importantly, we want to inspire attendees to create or expand their own personal museums and to gain a greater understanding of the world through the microcosm of their collections.” For more information on the Curios & Curiosities event, go to the Salem Art Association website at www.salemart.org or at the Bush Barn Art Center in nearby Bush Park. alt Disney Resorts has come up with a brand new way for customers to experience the Magic of Disney. Starting Jan. 2014, visitors to the Disney World Resort in Florida began receiving a “MagicBand.” Completely wireless with a built-in-battery, it is a disposable bracelet worn throughout the Disney trip, to be used as a theme park ticket, room key, and PhotoPass card. It even has access to selective FastPass+ selections. Inside the MagicBand is a tracker, giving Disney workers the ability to know the location of the band wearer and where they have visited. This will be used for employees to know which rides or events are the most popular. The trackers will also be used for guests to see how close they are to Disney charac-

ters around the park as well. “I think it’s good that the trackers have been put in the MagicBand because it will make it much more convenient to find someone who has gotten lost,” said Amanda Ambriz ‘16. The MagicBand is only one aspect of Disney’s new technology: MyMagic+. Made up of the MagicBand, the My Disney Experience website/app and FastPass+, the MyMagic+ experience will give guests a more hands on and personalized visit. “If it serves as tickets it’d be a lot more convenient for the visitors just having to wear it,” said Valeria Ramirez ‘16. Guests will be able to use FastPass+ to book dining reservations and reserve times for rides and attractions all over the Disney resorts, giving visitors the freedom to change their plans spontaneously and easily.

fter 36 years, Sandra Husk is no longer the superintendent of the Salem-Keizer School District. Husk left the district on Dec. 31 and became the CEO of Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID). “I am going to miss seeing the students and being a part of the Salem-Keizer community. I am honored and excited to be the CEO for AVID,” said Husk. Her advice for the new superintendent is, “Enjoy the great leaders, students, teachers, and parents in this school district. They care deeply about learning and achieving great things. I hope you have as much fun and satisfaction out of the position that I did.”

Dr. Paula Radich will serve as interim superintendent until June 30, while the Salem-Keizer School Board searches for a permanent replacement. The school board is currently looking for someone one with strong leadership skills in previous positions, specifically in educational settings. According to a publication on the District website, the applicant, “must have the leadership skills required to respond to the challenges presented by an ethnically and culturally diverse community and has a vision for meeting the requirements of college and career readiness for students.” The School Board also requires that he or she have high levels of self-confidence and optimism, and model high standards of integrity and personal performance.

s of last week, South Salem High has a new Assistant Principal, Dustin Purnell. Purnell was previously an Assistant Principal at North Valley High School, located in Grants Pass, for two years. “I’m very excited to be at South!” Purnell said. Prior to working at North Valley, Purnell taught in Salem for several years. He and his family enjoyed Salem, and

decided to come back. “South is a great school and has a rich tradition of success in the classroom, in athletics, and in co-curricular clubs and activities, and I’m looking forward to being a part of it,” said Purnell. In his free time, Purnell likes to watch his children play sports including soccer, little league, and basketball. Purnell has even coached some of the sports listed above.

he class of 2015 will be the last class to take the Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (OAKS) test. Instead, the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) will be required for high school students in the Salem-Keizer School District. In recognition of the The National Governors Association (NGA) decision, students in every state are required to meet Common Core Standards instead of individual state tests. Although the the NGA said that students in every state should take the SBAC or the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers test (PARCC), states are still not required to enforce these new tests. Oregon chose to adopt the SBAC.

“Some students will love it and some will not,” said Thomas Rommel, South Salem High School’s Assistant Principal. Similar to OAKS testing, the SBAC will also play a role in determining if students will graduate. However, this does not mean that the test will be the same as the OAKS tests, in fact the SBAC only covers math and language arts. The science test will remain in its current form. The SBAC test will be longer, and can only be taken once during a student’s junior year. “I am not looking forward to this new test because i feel it unnecessary, and I hope it changes back.” Said Andres Cruz, ‘14. To get a closer look at what the SBAC will entail visit www.smarterbalanced.org for a practice test and other information.

s of 2011, Snapchat, the photo-sharing app for smartphones, has compiled millions of users data. While most of users believe the app provides a safe way to share photos that quickly disappear, a recent security breach has changed many the view of many users. On Jan. 1, this app’s privacy claim was broken and the usernames and partially-redacted phone numbers of 4.6 million Snapchat users were released onto the Internet. When setting up an account for Snapchat, a user is prompted to put in their phone number. This allows users to use the ‘Find Friends’ function, connecting users with people on their contact list that also have the app. Because of the hack, Snapchat has recently let users opt-out of this feature so that they cannot be found via phone number. Despite being hacked, Snapchat continues to state that user information is confidential. According to Snapchat’s privacy policy, “We may retain certain information as required by law,

for legitimate business purposes, or as part of our regular retention practices. We may also retain cached or archived copies of information about you for a certain period of time.” This has led some users to believe that the app is tracking people by phone number. Currently, Snapchat tracks users’ locations for the same reasons state in the privacy policy. In early 2013, Forbes business reported that photos shared over Snapchat can be easily retrieved with minimal technical knowledge. As proven by a man who hacked the database in Jan. 2014, Snapchat’s information is not well protected. However, Snapchat’s privacy policy states, “We take reasonable measures to help protect information about you from loss, theft, misuse and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration and destruction.” Snapchat has taken security precautions so this sort of hack does not happen again, but the state of security and the policy is continually changing. ered two-year institutions and therefore tend to offer limited curriculums. Unless one desires specific job training for a technical or vocational career, at some point a student will have to transfer to another college. However, many students find that community college credits are not always transferable to four year schools. In the long run this means that students who choose to go to community college need to be extra mindful of what classes they are taking so that they can avoid having to pay for classes not recognized by four year institutions. Besides tuition, another difference between four-year institutions and community colleges is academics. Four-year schools are designed to expose students to a variety of coursework. This means students are required to take general education courses, typically for the first two years before focusing on a specific major. For students that have yet to determine what they would like to study, community colleges allow students to more freely explore various majors without the added pressure of cost. Another thing to consider is atmosphere. Compared to traditional four year schools, community colleges often lack an authentic college vibe filled with

valentine’s day special 1. BUY A STUFFED ANIMAL

Not everyone is paired up on Valentine’s Day; and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Valentine’s Day is about enjoying the company of others, but when going solo, the best way to celebrate the holiday is to enjoy your own company, and to honor your independence with inexpensive rewards:

Get yourself a huge teddy bear to have a companion of your own this Valentine’s Day. Any stuffed animal can suffice, even a giraffe. Why have a romantic meal with another person when you can have a romantic meal with you and your stuffed animal?

2. MAKE RESERVATIONS FOR ONE

How to be Independent on Valentine’s Day NICHELE HERNDON / Photographer Photos courtesy of NICHELE HERNDON.

4. HANG WITH FRIENDS THAT ARE ALSO SINGLE

Hang out with friends that are also single. Being independent does not mean you will always be alone, so make memories with friends. Go bowling, or just have a friend night. Watch movies, go out to dinner or just stay at hom and have your own little party. Better yet, invite old friends you have not been in contact with for a while and redefine what it means to have a “group date.”

Take yourself to Olive Garden and have a dinner of endless breadsticks or endless salad. Take yourself anywhere for that matter. Buffalo Wild Wings, Red Robin and even Taco Bell are all valid places to go to eat. You can even bring a friend for a friend date.

3. TAKE YOURSELF TO A MOVIE

Take yourself to the movies. Go to a romance flick, a comedy, or an action/adventure movie. If interested in a comedy, go see “About Last Night,” or if you are into action and adventure, go see “Vampire Academy.” You don’t need to be in a relationship to see a movie; go have fun by yourself and indulge in a large bucket of popcorn. For a cheaper alternative, have a movie night at your house with junk food like ice cream and pizza.

SELECT DIFFICULTY EASY MODE Lebkuchen cookies are the German form of gingerbread cookies, shaped in large hearts that can be decorated for someone special. It would take no more than an hour to bake, and your lover ought to be stunned by the time and effort you put into making them something as sweet as a Lebkuchen cookie. You can also add creative designs and write a sweet German saying. Go to page 9 of this issue for the recipe and more information on Lebkuchen cookies.

Tonight, invite your crush over and pick up a takeand-bake pizza to cook at home, or better yet, order one. If you have a karaoke machine, great! If you need one, stop at Walmart and buy one. Karaoke machines at Walmart sell for $50 and up. Jam out while munching on pizza rather than giving your date traditional roses and a box of chocolates.

A fancy dinner can be done in a couple hours! Invite your lover over and surprise them with a three course meal. Buy a ready made ceasar salad from the grocery store for a first course, a box of pasta and some garlic bread for the main dish. For dessert make sure to buy some premade cookie dough. You can bake the whole package in 15 minutes or less and serve freshly made cookies to finish off the meal. Add details such as flowers or a nice table cloth with a candle for an extra romantic touch.

Ice skating is a cute, unique idea that your crush will find sweeter than anything. The Lloyd Center Mall Ice Rink offers ice skating for all ages. Take them on a date, or give them the experience of learning how to skate. For private lessons, call the Lloyd Center Mall at 503-288-6073. Prices start at $10. Valentine’s Day Around The World

hen it comes to Valentine’s Day symbols, most Americans are accustomed to hearts, chocolate, and red and pink. The day of appreciation and affection began in early 14th century Europe but eventually made its way to nearly every continent, and every country has created its own traditions. Valentine’s Day traditions in Russia are similar to those of the United States. There are holiday sales, an exchange of cards and gifts, and romantic dates. “It’s not a very popular holiday [in Russia], but we host a disco at a friend’s house and get gifts from our boyfriends,” said Oksana Duskin ‘15, who’s aunt resides in Kiev, Ukraine. There is a tradition of writing love poems and singing songs to commemorate St. Valentine in Britain. Some girls stand by their bedroom windows early on Valentine’s morning to await the sight of the first boy they see, supposedly predicting who the girl will marry.

Valentine’s Day is not restrained to pampering the ladies. In Japan, the handsomest boys receive chocolate. A month

suming chocolate, there is no better way to show that significant other just how much they are cared about. Ooh là là! France is famous for being

one of the most romantic countries in Europe. “Valentine’s Day there is a lot like here in America with the flowers, candy, stuff like that,” said South Salem French teacher Robert Zenk. A tradition Americans are less familiar with includes the loterie d’amour, the “draw of love,” first introduced in the 13th century. Single men would go to the house opposite of their own and see if they liked a single girl that lived there. If not, the men would go to other houses until they found a girl they liked. Single women would gather pictures of guys they were rejected by and set them on fire. Chaos often ensued, so the fire pit is rarely seen in present day. Differences in cultures are most prominent when travelling or hosting a foreign exchange student. The purpose of holidays are sometimes overlooked, but the uniting effect of peaceful gift exchanges and getting acquainted with those around you are sure to last a lifetime and be an unforgettable experience.

Another Cliche Vampire Movie?

KAYLA RIGSBY /Opinion Editor

T

he popular book seriesThe popular book series “Vampire Academy” has finally been adapted to a movie. Those unfamiliar with the books probably look at the name and cringe; I know I would. Vampire Academy sounds like another terrible vampire series lacking originality, filled with an overly dramatic romantic plot. Yet the books are anything but cliche. The vampires in Richelle Mead’s series are based off Russian mythology, not a toned down Dracula. In the world created by Mead there are three types of vampires. Strigoi, the typical soulless killing machines—brutal and without any morality to their actions—are a danger to the world. Moroi are vampires that have to drink blood, are weak in the sunlight and possess magical powers based on the elements. Moroi have royal bloodlines and a sophisticated social structure that the Dhampirs have to live within as well. Dhampirs are half-human, half-Moroi and are essentially human with the key exception of having supernatural strength, resulting in most of them becoming bodyguards to the Moroi ,

character is complex, unique and has a set of problems and desires that exist outside of the Rose, the main character’s plotline, something that few books really manage. The book has a delicate balance between action, humor and drama, a balance that will be hard to translate on screen. The director of the movie is Mark Waters, who also directed ‘Mean Girls’ and the writer of Vampire Academy Photo by CHLOE CURTIS. is Daniel Waters who wrote ‘Heathers’. The advertising leading up to the movie has really highlighted the teenage angst and humor parts of the story, but Vampire Academy is not just a silly teen comedy, and to make it such would take away necessary depth and complexity. Richelle Mead,

The book centers around Rose Hathaway, an impulsive Dhampir willing to risk her life for her closest friend Lissa, who is also the last surviving member of the Dragomir family, one of the royal Moroi bloodlines. There is no startling discovery of a hidden magical world, Rose and Lissa have been a part of the world their entire lives, and so the discovery of a less than human status is not a defining characteristic for any of the characters, something that far too many YA fantasy books and movies do. Yes, the story is set in a world of vampires, magic and royalty, but it is written with characters who not only seem plausible, but relatable as well, despite their superhuman qualities. Each

has already addressed this in her blog and assured that the advertisements centering around it’s humorous moments do not represent the entire movie. Vampire Academy is such a strong book because it is not centered around a silly vampire love story. Yes, there is a romantic plot, but it is not the primary relationship driving the story, Rose and Lissa’s friendship is the focus, which is a nice change of pace to see. The movie has clearly kept true to this because it passed the Bechdel test, which is simply that there are two named female characters in the movie who manage to talk to each other about something other than a man, which seems simple but a surprising amount of movies fail to achieve even a single scene with women talking about something other than men. The unexpected February snow made seeing the movie when it first came out a week ago a bit undesirable, but it definitely seems worth taking a chance on, especially if a chick flick is not your first choice of a Valentine’s Day movie. Whether it does stay true to the books or not remains to be seen, but if it is even a fraction as compelling as the books, it will be worth the two hours.

New Laws Affecting Teens in Oregon Tanning

into action in June later this year. State Legislatures alone have passed nearly 40,000 bills this year, out of those 40,000 only 3,000 bills were passed in Oregon.

JULIA SALGADO / Social Media Since the start of 2014 several new laws that have been passed and they either came into action January 1st or will be coming

One of the laws that was passed is banning minors from using tanning beds, unless they have a note from a doctor. Oregon has one the highest rates for melanoma and skin cancer in the nation. Going regularly to a tanning salon can damage your skin and though looking tan in rainy Oregon is nice, it is not worth ending up with melanoma or skin cancer.

Texting While Driving

Access to Employee’s Social Media

Universities, colleges and employers are no longer able to demand access to applicants’ social media accounts. While teenagers appreciate their privacy in social media, it limits how much for the universities and businesses are able to know about who they are hiring and what kind of person they are. “I think that privacy is a right and this new law is protecting that right,” said Johanna Sproed.

The texting and driving fine has doubled to a $500 fine. Texting and driving can cause major car accidents if you are not careful, and it may cause death if the accident is severe enough. No text is worth risking your life and getting into a car accident. “It’s a distraction, and it takes you away from what is in front of you,” said Mychaela Bowles ‘14

Sports Concussion Laws

Smoking

Oregons new concussion law requires all sports coaches and referees to recognize the signs and symptoms of a concussion. It is important for coaches to know signs and symptoms of a concussion so that the athlete can go see a doctor as soon as possible, decreasing the chance of the concussion to become worse.

Oregon has banned smoking in a vehicle with children present, if caught there will be a fine between $250 and $500. Secondhand smoke is dangerous and minors shouldn’t be inhaling it. Also, the price of cigarette packs will also go up 13 cents to $1.31, helping to make the habit less appealing.

Sports Opinion: Out in Sports

College football player comes out as gay. LAURA THORSETT / Copy Editor

O

n Jan. 28, 2013, Willamette freshman kicker Conner Mertens came out as bisexual, becoming the first active college football player to openly be a member of the LGBTQ community. Since then, dozens of athletes have contacted Cyd Zeigler of Outsports.com, who originally published Mertens’ story, seeking to tell their story. Outsports published five coming out stories in the week that followed. As the gay rights movement has blossomed in the 45 years since the Stonewall Riots, professional sports have been slow to catch up, but that is gradually changing. No official statistics quantify the number of openly gay athletes at the ongoing 2014 Olympics, but most counts come to only seven. Only seven, one-fifth of one percent, of the athletes in Sochi are out of the closet, while most estimates of the world’s LGBTQ population are between 3% and 10%. There is, of course, no way to know for sure how many Olympians are gay, but it is statistically likely that among the 2,800 figure skaters, ski jumpers, and others, there are more than seven that identify as LGBTQ. The Sochi Olympics have been controversial for many reasons, including the passage and enforcement of a strict new law banning “gay propaganda” that can be viewed by minors, effectively pro-

hibiting all public support of LGBTQ people, or being openly gay. Beatings, rapes, and murders of people known or suspected of being LGBTQ are on the rise, and numerous news organizations are reporting that police are refusing to aid victims, and are even participating in the violence. Russian President Vladimir Putin said that gay athletes would not be targeted by police, but added “Just leave kids alone, please,” said Putin, reiterating a long disproven belief that all homosexuals are pedophiles. In June of 2013, Jason Collins, at the time a center for the Washington Wizards of the National Basketball Association (NBA), became the first active male athlete to come out in professional athletics. British diver and Olympic bronze medalist Tom Daley revealed that he was in a long-term relationship with a man in December 2013, though he pointedly avoided labels. However, there is still progress to be made. Currently, there are no out players in the NFL, but that may be changing. On Feb. 9, 2014, Michael Sam, a senior defensive lineman for the University of Missouri, came out in the New York Times. Sam is seen as a likely draft pick. If drafted, he would become the first openly gay NFL player. As for Conner Mertens, he says “This is exactly what I wanted. [To] open the door for other athletes to be themselves. I’m speechless.”

Beginning with team figure skating, the games have continued on with Freestyle Skating. The first day ended with snowboarding and speed skating.

Conflicting aspects of Russian Law and the Olympic Charter have led to controversy concerning gay rights issues. In addition to issues concerning gay rights, the 150th anniversary Circassian genocide, in which hundreds of thousands of Russian Muslims were driven into Turkey and killed has also led to controversy. Protesters argue that the games are being held on “mass graves.”

t is a great year for South’s girls varsity basketball. At the 6A level, the team is currently ranked 8th in the state. South’s current record is 7-0 in the league, but 15-5 overall. South’s toughest competitor so far this season has been McNary. “Having a great year,” said varsity head coach Nick McWilliams. South also faced tough competition against Clackamas, Beaverton and West Linn high schools. oys basketball is doing well. The guys’ season record is 17-3 (19-1) 7-0 in league; they have a 17 game winning streak. They are currently ranked fifth in the state. “Our third game of the season we lost to Clackamas by 2 (71-73) We had them tied with 3 seconds left before their 6’8” post scored,” said coach Tyler Allen, “they outsized us but we played a very strong game.” Coach Allen, guides the team into their 17 game-winning streak, playing their most exciting basketball season in a while. In the last five games, the team has scored 87, 84, 87, 92, and 78 points. “We are 7-0 in league and clinched the league title with our win over McKay,” said Allen. If the Saxons win their last three league games and the CVC tournament, they will be one of the top four teams in the state. If they do well in that, then they will be in the eight-team State Tournament at the Moda Center. “We have to take it one day at a time,” said Allen, “and not focus past our next opponent.”
