Today there are more than 2,000 employees. ­Quality. The company’s inaugural goal was to improve the safety and quality of blood products in China. The HIV/AIDS epidemic was raging in the U.S. and Europe, and the disease was moving into China via imported blood plasma. “We pioneered using more sensitive, virus-specific tests to screen raw blood plasma, importing FDA-approved test kits from the U.S.” Shanghai RAAS went on to develop a comprehensive system for screening and production that adheres to the standards of China, the U.S., the European Medicines Agency and the World Health Organization. ➠➠Bureaucracy, Chinese-style. Early on, Meecham learned how to shepherd products through the Chinese Ministry of Health. “The rules and regulations were interpreted differently from one person to another. If you got somebody in a happy mood, perhaps you would get approved. It felt like pushing water uphill. Things are much better now.” ➠➠Door to door. With a team of doctors she’d recruited as her sales force – clinicians who could explain blood products’ uses in a widening range of medical conditions – Meecham embarked on a quest for customers across China. “We literally knocked on doors at hospitals, at medical supply stations, you name it.” ➠Worth it. Helping to grow Shanghai RAAS into the largest blood products company in China and the third-largest in the world has had rewards: “I get phone calls from people who say, ‘My mother is in a hospital that only has blood products from other companies. Can you help?’

And doctors from all over the country tell me how effective our products are compared to others. Just hearing these things gives you a good feeling that you are doing something worthwhile.”

A biologist and microbiologist who earned her B.S. at Cal Lutheran and M.S. at Cal State Northridge, Meecham was a laboratory manager at RAAS (Rare Antibody Antigen Supply) in Agoura Hills in 1988 when her boss, RAAS founder and CEO Kieu Hoang, tapped her to help launch the first-ever U.S.-Chinese joint venture in Shanghai.

Meecham had never been to China and didn’t speak the language (she’s Vietnamese-American). “But I was single, in my early 30s, and it sounded like an exciting adventure … so why not?” In February 1989 she was on a plane.

An exhibition opens a window on the island of New Guinea’s recent past.

Through April 7, you can take a close-up look at a group of Pacific Rim indigenous cultures by passing through the doors of the football stadium into the William Rolland Gallery of Fine Art. Ritual and Art: Pluralities in The Ellsworth La Boyteaux Collection of New Guinea Artifacts is also a peek back about five decades, into a period of increasing contact between Westerners and people from the Sepik River region of what is now Papua New Guinea. More than 150 objects were collected by an Australian patrol officer in the early to mid-1960s, acquired by La Boyteaux and then donated to Cal Lutheran about 40 years ago. They have not been displayed publicly since 1972, when art professor Jerry Slattum had the collection here on loan.

What you’ll find: the nose of a canoe, a hair covering for a bride, elaborate ceiling hooks, Kwona bark paintings, coconut-shell spinning tops, an abundance of sculptures including Abelam ancestral spirit figures for initiation ceremonies, woven ancestor masks for long yams, spears and spear launchers, daggers, drums and jewelry. Artisans made some of the items expressly for sale to outsiders, but others were intended for everyday or ceremonial or military use.

The Rolland Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, except holidays.

In university’s 25th year in NCAA Division III,

REGALS VOLLEYBALL WINS IT ALL

First national team title since the NAIA football championship of 1971

D

uring Cal Lutheran’s 25th year in National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III competition, and on the third championship match appearance in the history of the volleyball program, the Regals brought home the university’s first NCAA title in a team sport.

Until the next such achievement, the victory last Nov. 21 in Grand Rapids, Michigan, places the volleyball team in a category with only the 1971 Kingsmen football team that captured the NAIA national championship. (Cal Lutheran 6 CLU MAGAZINE

Division III athletes have also placed first nationally in individual sports, most recently in track and field events.)

Head coach Kellee Roesel’s Regals played the last matches of 2015 in front of family, roommates, former players and other Cal Lutheran die-hards, whose painted-purple enthusiasm was noticed by the announcers on NCAA.com livestreaming broadcasts. Off the court, the team felt the love via Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and Snapchat mobile messaging. On the sideline, during breaks and timeouts, they danced (see Page 14).

The three-set championship win over the Wittenberg Tigers was notably onesided (25-23, 25-18, 25-16), against a highly

respected opponent and one day after Cal Lutheran needed five sets to survive the semifinal against Carthage College.

“It’s amazing. I really don’t know how else to put it,” said junior Michelle Lawrence that Saturday night. “We have worked our hardest the past four months and we have gone through so many ups and downs, and people did not think we would make it this far. They didn’t even think we would make it to the NCAA tournament. But we fought all the adversity and did the work and believed.”

Senior outside hitter Allie Eason led the attack in the final match, serving backto-back aces during a six-point run that gave the team a 16-12 first-set advantage.

The championship match, where things came together, was in many ways the culmination of years of effort. Some of the current Regals played on an equally great 2013 team that came one point from winning the championship.

The volleyball team is now on a sixyear streak as the SCIAC conference champion. It is well-positioned to continue the run, with only two seniors set to graduate in May. Like the 2013 squad, this national champion team has been able to share the load among players and to perform under pressure. With her team trailing in the fourth set of the Nov. 20 semifinal, Roesel subbed in senior Pua Mo’okiniOliveira and sophomore Mikayla Dobson cold off the bench, and the pair combined for two crucial kills. Lawrence also elevated her game for the fourth and fifth sets, as she, Eason and Roberts each recorded a double-double for the match in kills and digs.

For the day, she had 13 kills and eight digs. On the strength of sophomore setter Jamie Smith’s 34 assists, junior Monica Lundgren had nine kills and Lawrence (suffering from the flu) had eight. Amanda Roberts, a freshman, had 14 digs.

For the tournament, Eason was named Most Outstanding Player. She was joined on the NCAA all-tournament team by Lawrence and junior Nicki Tetherow, a defensive specialist who contributed vocal leadership and saves, including 27 digs in the thrilling semifinal.

“I learned that I really loved the values of this program – the sisterhood and love for the game.”

Every season, under one of four rotating themes, assistant coach Kevin Judd plans activities around the full schedule of home and away games. 2015 featured his scaled-down version of CBS Television’s Amazing Race, in which pairs of contestants complete timed challenges.

In Michigan, some women on the volleyball team took icy plunges in the Grand River as part of the fun. On the morning of the championship match, they converged in pairs on Rosa Parks Circle in search of Cal Lutheran President Chris Kimball, who was waiting with instructions for the next-to-last team-building challenge.

For that challenge, one woman from every pair had to write a five-item list in the snow from memory: the mascots of the five opponents that the Regals had beaten in single-elimination play, since regionals, in order to make it to the NCAA final.

In the end, Nov. 21 was an amazing day for the “race.” For the first time, Judd included an NCAA match as a teambuilding event. The challenge was to win. So when the players accepted their individual NCAA championship trophies that night, they stood on a themed banner laid out by the assistant coach to signify completion of the race’s final leg.

Students First Several of the team members, including Eason and Tetherow, view themselves as ambassadors for Division III sports, often recommending this scholar-athlete’s path to younger players in their club volleyball coaching. You work as hard as any top

college athlete, they say, but your sport is not a job. It’s more of a major volunteer commitment: You give up on free time.

You support other athletes, go to games, learn about water polo. In the off-season, you play intramural sports with friends.

Or study abroad.

When Eason was in high school, she first imagined herself playing NCAA Division I. But she also had academic aptitude and a long-standing fascination with “the way that we think, and why we do the things that we do, and what motivates us” in both sports and daily life.

“I learned that I really loved the values of this program – the sisterhood and love for the game. We’re very competitive,” said the psychology major. “We’re competitive not just in volleyball, but pretty much everything in life. We like having good grades, because we like to know that we are achieving.”

On the plane ride home from Michigan, among other opportunities, the team members spent their time studying.

Tetherow said that Cal Lutheran’s primary focus on academics has helped her in life.

She’s needed her grades in order to keep playing, and the grades haven’t always come easily. A junior in marketing communication, she pictures herself in a fundraising and outreach role at a nonprofit, possibly for Alzheimer’s research.

“You grow up with the program and with the girls you’re around, and it really shapes you into the person you become at the end of it,” said Tetherow. “And there’s been some pretty great girls that have come out of this program, I can tell you that.”

WIDEOUT SIGNS TWO-YEAR DEAL WITH NFL’S 49ERS After being cut from Dallas Cowboys training camp, Eric Rogers ’13 set out to improve his skills. His persistence paid off. WITH REPORTING BY TRACY OLSON

Recent graduates of Cal Lutheran may remember this 6-foot-3 speedster from football games. He wore No. 4, ran patterns, caught the ball, scored a lot and smashed school records.

Or you might remember him swiping meal cards in the Caf – friendly, tall, nice smile.

And you may wonder, “Whatever happened to Eric Rogers?” Well, he has signed a two-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League.

The deal included a $125,000 signing bonus, $100,000 in base salary and other bonuses.

The move to the NFL comes after a great 2015 season with the Calgary Stampeders. Rogers led the Canadian Football League (CFL) in receiving 10 CLU MAGAZINE

yards (1,448), tied for the most touchdown catches (10) and finished third overall in receptions (87).

With those results, it didn’t matter that he’d been cut from Dallas Cowboys training camp shortly after he graduated in 2013. A couple of weeks after the 2015 CFL season ended, he began filling his schedule with NFL team workouts (16 in all).

Then-Philadelphia head coach Chip Kelly, a former offensive coordinator, and Rogers spent a lot of time together when he was working out for the Eagles.

“We built a relationship off the bat and a few hours after he was hired by the 49ers he called me,” Rogers said.

The 49ers organization had shown interest in

Rogers prior to Kelly’s hiring.

Although he had multiple offers on the table, Rogers decided on the West Coast team. The signing, in January, was Kelly’s first as the new head coach of the Niners.

Now, Rogers has the shot he’s dreamed about. He believes that his experiences in NCAA Division III, in the Arena League and especially in the CFL will help him.

“Playing against the highquality opponents that I did in Canada gives me confidence that I can play with anyone,” he said. “I am not the best player I can be just yet. I have room for improvement, but I know what to expect, what things I can work on, and that I can contribute to the team and find my way into the end zone.”

For two years, men’s and women’s water polo players have been visiting kids taught by the mother of sophomore goalkeeper Nick Loomis, assisting with classroom centers, helping them write in journals and playing with them.

Catherine Loomis, who contacted head coach Craig Rond to make the connection, aims for all of the children to attend college whether their parents did or not. Fifteen kindergartners and their parents attended a Kingsmen game last year at Whittier College, and families have toured the Cal Lutheran campus with players.

While negotiators were working toward a global climate change agreement in Paris, students, faculty and staff staged two back-to-back “die-ins” last Dec. 8 on campus to dramatize the dangers of inaction. About 150 people participated. Organizers from assistant professor of religion Victor Thasiah’s course on “Religion and Power” also hosted a climate forum.

News briefs GRANT TO EQUIP SCIENCE LABS The W. M. Keck Foundation has awarded the university a grant of $300,000 for laboratory equipment. The funds will give biology and exercise science students access to tools and methods for courses and mentored research, including next-generation DNA sequencing, confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, and motion capture and analysis.

Enrollment of Latino undergraduates reached 25 percent in 2013-2014 and continues to grow.

In Memoriam

Mike Benson

Mike Benson March 12, 1947 – Nov. 17, 2015 Former Cal Lutheran tennis coach Mike Benson died on Nov. 17, 2015, at age 68.

Benson entered Pacific Lutheran University as a tennis player in 1965, helped the Lutes win the 1967 district doubles championship, and went on to a winning career at PLU as coach of the men’s and later the women’s tennis programs. He is credited with coining the phrase, “It’s a great day to be a Lute!”

He came to Cal Lutheran in 2008 when the women’s tennis program was coming off a three-win season. In his two seasons as head coach, the Regals posted 19 wins including a 14-8 record his final year.

Benson is survived by his wife, Mary, two daughters and their husbands, and five grandchildren.

Joan Helen Blacher Aug. 10, 1928 – Nov. 5, 2015 Joan Blacher, professor emerita of Cal Lutheran’s Graduate School of Education, died Nov. 5, 2015, following a brief illness.

She was 87.

A dedicated and compassionate educator, Blacher taught full time at Cal Lutheran from 1987 until 1998. As director of the Counseling and Guidance graduate program, she paved the way for hundreds of students to become school counselors and college student personnel professionals.

Early in her career, Blacher taught elementary school and special education.

She served as a school psychologist in the Los Angeles Unified and Pasadena Unified school districts as well as school psychologist and principal for the Ventura County Superintendent of Schools Office. She also had a private practice as a licensed marriage and 12 CLU MAGAZINE

family therapist and licensed educational psychologist.

She wrote three mystery novels, co-wrote the book Difficult Teens: A Parent’s Guide for Coping, and contributed numerous articles to professional journals and commentary for newspapers and magazines. She lectured and gave workshops throughout the United States and was listed in Who’s Who in America for over 20 years.

In addition to many professional organizations, she was active in community organizations including Camarillo Hospice, Interface Children Family Services and the Vision Committee of the Ventura County Community Foundation’s Women’s Legacy Fund. She was appointed to the Ventura County Mental Health Board, serving one year as chair.

Blacher was born and raised in Los Angeles. She attended the University of Redlands, graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, and earned a master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Southern California.

She is survived by her husband, Norman, and three stepsons.

Robert Malcolm DeKruif Feb. 17, 1919 – Dec. 30, 2015 Los Angeles banking executive and philanthropist Robert DeKruif died on Dec. 30, 2015, at age 96.

DeKruif’s association with Cal Lutheran spanned decades and many roles, including as a member of the Board of Regents from

1971-1977. His commitment to the university touched everything from student scholarships and operating funds to the construction of buildings, including Pearson Library, Ahmanson Science Center and Soiland Humanities Center. He was an advocate and supporter of the CLU Annual Fund.

After graduating from the University of Southern California, DeKruif was hired by finance tycoon and philanthropist Howard Ahmanson Sr. He became president of the H.F. Ahmanson Co. and in 1968 was elected to The Ahmanson Foundation, one of L.A.’s biggest charitable trusts. He served as a trustee and trustee emeritus of the foundation from 1974 until his death.

DeKruif’s wife, Jeanne, died in September.

He is survived by daughters, Virginia ’71 Merchant and Debra ’76 Seesemann; stepson Robert Peterson; stepdaughter Debora Peterson; 22 grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren.

Marvin K. Soiland June 28, 1927 – Feb. 8, 2016 Marv Soiland, a beloved Cal Lutheran regent emeritus, died Feb. 8, 2016, of natural causes. He was 88.

Soiland was the founder and CEO of a Northern California underground construction and real estate development company.

A longtime friend and dedicated supporter of the university, he served on the Board of Regents from 1974 to 1995 and chaired the Administration and Finance Committee for two decades. He also was a member of the California Lutheran Educational Foundation Board of Trustees. The university awarded him a Distinguished Service Award in 1996, an honorary doctorate in 2004, and the Christus Award in 2010.

Soiland and his wife, Fran, became two of the university’s most generous donors.

The couple contributed to Pearson Library, Samuelson Chapel, Spies-Bornemann Center for Education and Technology, Swenson Center for the Social and Behavioral Sciences, and Gilbert Sports and Fitness Center, which contains Soiland Recreation Center.

Soiland Humanities Center was named for them in 1998.

Soiland was born in San Francisco to a family active in the Norwegian Lutheran Church. He spent most of his life in the Northern California community of Santa Rosa and graduated from high school at the age of 16. He served two stints in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War. In between, he attended Pacific Lutheran University for a year before earning an engineering degree from Oregon State University. He worked for several construction businesses before founding Soiland Co. in 1962.

Soiland served as president of the Engineering and Grading Contractors’ Association and received a number of awards and citations from professional associations in construction and contracting.

Five of his seven children graduated from Cal Lutheran, and one of his grandsons graduated in the same ceremony where he received his honorary doctorate.

Soiland is survived by his wife of 27 years, sons Dave, Dean ’81, Troy ’83 and Mark ’91; daughters Marlene, Monica ’86 Nelson and Valerie ’94 Rodriguez; his brother, Al; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Ronald Roy Stillwell Dec. 3, 1939 – Jan. 25, 2016 Ron Stillwell, who helped build Cal Lutheran’s baseball program, died of cancer on Jan. 25, 2016, at age 76.

Stillwell played shortstop at the University of Southern California and captained its 1961 national championship team. He signed a contract with the Washington Senators, but his major league career was limited to 14 games due to an eye injury.

He began teaching at Thousand Oaks High School in 1964 and remained for 33 years, coaching baseball for 25. He also coached at Cal Lutheran from 1972-1978, where he had a record of 139-100-1, and was named NAIA Coach of the Year in 1976. He was a walk-on coach at Moorpark College from 1985-1989.

Stillwell was twice selected to manage a U.S. college all-star team against a Japanese team and was elected to the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.

He is survived by Jan, his wife of 55 years, and sons Scott, Kurt and Rod.

Carl Bertram Swanson June 6, 1926 – Feb. 19, 2016 Carl Bertram Swanson, a dedicated and beloved California Lutheran University organist and music professor emeritus, died Feb. 19, 2016, at age 89.

Swanson joined the music faculty in 1964 and served as department chair from 1981 to 1989. His most visible legacy to the university is the beautiful Borg Petersen Memorial Organ in Samuelson Chapel. He was principal designer and worked closely with the builder during the organ’s construction.

After retiring from teaching in 1998, he continued to serve as organist for chapel

services and the Lord of Life congregation.

He was named an honorary alumnus in 1998. That same year, the American Scandinavian Foundation, Thousand Oaks chapter, honored him for outstanding service in education and music.

Swanson’s musical skill earned international renown through recitals in Spain, England and the Netherlands. A popular concert organist, he performed dedicatory recitals for new church organs throughout Southern California. He served as organist and choirmaster at First Lutheran Church of Los Angeles and organist at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Church in Van Nuys.

A Nebraska native, Swanson discovered his love of music at age 5. While in high school, he began his career as a church organist at the Lutheran church where his father was minister. He earned his undergraduate degree from Augustana College (Illinois) and won the prestigious Presser Foundation Award in music performance.

He received a master’s degree in organ and church music from Northwestern University and attended master classes at universities in Boston, Sweden and England.

Before coming to Cal Lutheran, Swanson was a faculty member at Luther Junior College in Wahoo, Nebraska, and served as organist-choirmaster for congregations in Minnesota, Massachusetts and Wisconsin.

He hosted a weekly half-hour recital radio program in Milwaukee.

He is survived by his sister, Betty Hill, brother and sister-in-law, Ted and Joann Swanson, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Coach Roesel, when did your team start dancing on the sidelines?

I would say it’s been a solid six or seven years. It started with a group of kids on the bench wanting to be looser and dance during the timeouts and in between games.

Then it just exploded into this thing.

Before the final set of the championship match against Wittenberg University, I’m told that you did not talk volleyball with the team. And that they put on a locker-room dance party?

With a strobe light.

Was that a conscious decision, or just spur-of-the-moment?

There’s a story behind it. You probably don’t know about the 10-minute break between the second and third sets. It’s interesting. It’s kind of a halftime break, and it’s standard in NCAA Division I. But it’s strange for us in Division III, because it doesn’t happen in regionals or the playoffs or during the season.

I don’t really know why they do that just during the national championship.

Anyway, it’s also a rule change. At the national championship in 2013, I found out about the 10-minute break right before the match.

That year, we played Calvin College in the final. We hammered them in the first two sets before the break, and then … it was the longest 10 minutes.

I think the break gave the kids a lot of time to think about the enormity of the situation.

Then it started getting tense out there and Calvin got all the momentum and we ended up losing.

And you didn’t want the same result this time.

Right, but it was more than that.

Is it ever a distraction?

It’s just worked. This is such an emotional sport and such a game of momentum.

And I’ve said it a lot: We’re just trying to keep the ball off the floor. It’s not like we’re trying to cure cancer. This is volleyball at the end of the day.

had lost the same exact way the year before. They had won the first two sets and then lost the last three for the championship.

After our loss in 2013, I was having a real hard time getting over it.

About two weeks after we lost to them, I called Calvin’s head coach, Amber Warners, out of the blue. I said, “I know this is probably weird, but I need to talk with someone other than my husband and my mom. You know, a coach.

It’s killing me, I can’t deal with it.”

That was the best decision I ever made in my professional life, to reach out to her. What a difference it’s made in my life. We’ve become really, really good friends. I absolutely adore her.

She shared with me that in that 10-minute break in 2013, all they did was mess around in the locker room.

They played some game and just kept it really light. She thought, “If we hammer them with volleyball stuff right now, we’re going to lose. We’re not going to have any chance.” She really beat me at my own game.

So this time, we were up 2-0 again at the break, and I’m sure some of those returning kids had it in the back of their minds.

Better bring out the speakers and the flashing lights.

I mean, we killed them in that third set. I don’t know. Had we not done that, would we still have won? Had we danced in 2013, would we have won?

I’m not taking any credit. It’s just one of those things where I said, “OK, I’m not going to do the same thing.”

Did the time go by quickly?

No, the 10 minutes was an eternity.

Whether you’re losing or winning, you just kind of want to get out there and get it going. So it still felt like a long time for me.

But I had to drag the kids out of the locker room because they were just having so much fun.

THINGS I’VE LEARNED:

DESTA HAGOS ’73 The first female artist to be honored with a solo exhibition in her native Ethiopia in 1969, Desta Hagos visited the U.S. late last year to spend time with her family and to show her work in Miami for Art Basel and then briefly at Cal Lutheran.

For about five years, she has been enjoying the most productive period of her painting career.

Our world is balanced. We have day, night. And in the night and in the day: the same hours. Life is like that.

Music is like that, too.

Sometimes we are not good. But the world as a whole is good. It’s arranged suitably for us.

Composition, in painting, is like solving a math problem.

It’s a calculation.

You have to know where to put a color. And the lines: They support the whole thing and keep it from falling down. For our eyes – psychologically – it’s comfortable.

When I do this, anybody can feel comfortable. It’s like architecture. Like a comfortable building on land that is sloping.

Any section of a good painting has a good composition.

You see a bad painting when they do it the easy way. It’s not right – you can see it. I can see it.

There is no shortcut at all in this life. One has to really be sure of oneself.

I had a little difficulty during the Derg time, the past regime in Ethiopia (1974-1987). Because they started to interpret things: “This looks like that,” they said. They had socialist thinking, but they did not know about art.

I talked to my paintings during the regime. Then I painted over them to delete them. I didn’t want to leave paintings behind.

ur world is full of color.

I realized, if the authorities come, they will say, “This is you.” And they can kill you because of the feelings in the paintings.

The feelings and also the content: Shortages. Queuing for sugar. Shootings. People were so afraid. And the color! The whole color of the country was dark.

Definitely, I knew that it would pass. I knew that a better time would come. I believed that Ethiopia didn’t deserve these kinds of leaders. I was also hearing the roar outside, how the guerilla fighters were moving. Gradually, the brightness was coming.

Life is extremes. Sometimes it gets sad. Most of the time, it is happy.

I love the color of sunflowers.

Sunflowers: they laugh. They are happy. I love laughing things.

If you put them in the house, you’re happy also. When I paint them, I feel so happy. They are not easy, either. They are also challenging. But I am good at capturing them.

I started as a kid. In the third and fifth grades, they entered my paintings in national contests, and I won. They knew I was a painter.

One has to be honest. One has to be strong. One has to be a hard worker.

Young women shouldn’t start anything they don’t like.

They have to be sure about themselves, first. Secondly, they have to be honest, because like writers, musicians – art itself needs peace and honesty. They have to be honest. They shouldn’t try to copy from somebody else or sound like

somebody else. They have to be creative themselves. They have to be patient. They have to be sure of themselves, if they don’t get money. They have to know themselves. Otherwise, they shouldn’t even start.

For better or for worse. You marry art.

Cal Lutheran was like my home. I loved the people. My adviser was Jerry Slattum. He was so good. I had to work hard – I’m a very stubborn person.

Right now, when I get home, I have to get in the studio.

Because I am here from Ethiopia, they invite you to the embassy, they invite you to a poetry reading, they invite you to a piano concert. I enjoy it so much, but I need to work.

America’s pastime tells us much about America’s past.

So much so that Cal Lutheran president and baseball fanin-chief Chris Kimball introduced a history course on the national game for the spring 2016 semester.

As it turns out, what happened on the diamond reflects the forces shaping the country and even reveals a few inconvenient national truths.

“I try to make it clear we are not going to talk about players and stats. It’s more about what the game can tell us about America,” said Kimball, a University of Chicago–educated U.S. historian.

Kimball lists urban history, race and labor relations, gender roles, imperialism and globalization as major themes in the curriculum of the undergraduate honors course he teaches on the Thousand Oaks campus.

At 7:45 on a chilly February morning, Kimball leads off with a review of the previous class, tossing out questions like high pop-ups for students to field. They talk about the pivotal 1888 gathering at Delmonico’s Restaurant, where the sport’s boosters drove home the idea that baseball was an American invention. Guests such as Teddy Roosevelt and Mark Twain were instructed, through chants of “no rounders,” to pay no attention to baseball’s resemblance to the English schoolchild’s bat-and-ball game called rounders.

When Kimball surveyed his students, he was surprised to discover how few counted themselves close followers of the big leagues. One player from the Regals softball squad is in the class, and no baseball players.

“If you asked me to write down everything I know about baseball, it would be the Baby Ruth candy bar and the Great Depression,” said senior Kevin Kunes, a “radio and multimedia guy” who carries a ukulele.

An avid Boston Red Sox fan since childhood, Kimball is philosophical about this generation’s curbed enthusiasm.

“Tastes change. All sports come and go. Boxing and horse racing used to be more popular,” he said.

With the course in its early innings, it was clear Kimball planned to use his historian’s tools to explode myths about the game.

“I will do what I can to put the final nails in the Doubleday theory’s coffin,” he said, alluding to the man once credited with drawing up the game of baseball in bucolic Cooperstown, New York. A handpicked commission intent on proving baseball was born in the USA promoted the legend. Kimball points out that Abner Doubleday, who achieved fame as a Civil War officer, never spoke of inventing the sport in his encounters with others or in his personal correspondence.

To make matters worse for those who’d like to think of baseball as the pastoral game in the movie Field of Dreams,

evidence points to its being an urban game, honed in the streets of Brooklyn and Manhattan.

As the course goes forward, Kimball will also make the case that today’s major leaguers are no greedier or more disloyal than storied players of the past.

Senior Tina Abbaszadeh found herself questioning the early hype around the game and the insistence on its U.S. origins.

“Why is it patriotic to pick on a British kids’ game?” the political science and communication major asked.

In the early baseball clubs, complex class relations were played out. The clubs attracted young men who aspired to the middle class and sought to be seen as upstanding citizens.

Feeling their jobs threatened by mechanization, clerks and artisans formed clubs for support and for what we now call networking.

Early organizers emphasized the game’s “manly” values. A man was characterized by control of his body and emotions.

“Players high-fiving, fist-pumping and chest-bumping would not have played well in that era,” Kimball told his class.

Rules evolved to separate the men from the boys. Early on, the batter was called out when a fielder caught a ball after one bounce, rather than only on the fly.

“It was all about making the game more physically challenging, more manly,” Kimball said.

The racial divide was vast. AfricanAmericans fielded early teams in handsome uniforms and walked on accompanied by fife and drum corps. A small number played alongside whites in the big leagues of the 1880s. Then came the Jim Crow era. Blacks and whites would not play in the same uniform again until Jackie Robinson integrated the game in 1947.

“Learning history through baseball is an interesting hook,” said Michaela Crawford Reaves, the History Department chair.

Looking over Kimball’s course synopsis, Reaves could relate it to her family’s American experience.

“For me it harkens back to my grandfather who played semipro ball. It was about scrappy immigrants becoming part of the American tapestry,” she said.

The added workload of teaching doesn’t bother Kimball. On a good day, balancing it with his duties as president feels like executing a triple play.

“I love teaching. I love history. I love baseball,” he said. “And I believe baseball is a good window into the history of the United States and much of the rest of the world.”

For CLU’s top administrator, baseball is not all stars and stats.

It’s about U.S. race and class relations, gender roles, business and globalization.

Lynne Gulizia ’78, San Diego, California, is national sales manager for Toray Membrane USA. She is a board member and second vice president of the American Membrane Technology Association. Last year, Lynne visited the Baltics, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and St. Petersburg, Russia. Gary Delanoeye, M.S. ’81, Ed.D. ’06, Carpinteria, California, recently published a humorous novel titled Checking in at the Crowbar Hotel based on his experiences teaching incarcerated youth. Gary, an affiliate faculty member with the Graduate Education and Credentialing program at Antioch University in Santa Barbara, believes there is much to learn from delinquent students who enter facilities like the “Crowbar Hotel” and explores these themes in the book. “Whatever I know about teaching has been informed tremendously by a bunch of kids who were seldom ever in school,” Gary said. “The irony of this continues to intrigue me!” The book is available at Amazon.com, from www.summerlandpublishing.com and at local bookstores.

Carmel RivelloMaguire ’04, Thousand Oaks, California, published her first children’s book in October under the name Carmel Rivello. The Bunny and the Mysterious Butterfly, the first in a series in the adventures of Bella and Flutter, tells the story of a lonely bunny named Bella who is visited by a friend from another dimension. In addition to writing, Carmel is a voice-over artist and speaker. One of her presentations, “Marketing, Motherhood and Marinara,” is subtitled “The ingredients you put in your sauce will impact your life – sweet or bitter, sour or delicious.”

Robert ’10 and Joelle (Cortez ’09) Duff, Oxnard, California, celebrate after he received his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of California Santa Barbara in June. He completed the final requirement for his doctorate with an internship in the psychiatry department at Kaiser in San Diego. Laureen L. (Spinas ’83) Hill, M.D. A self-reliant cowgirl who grew up on a working farm in Paso Robles, California, Laureen L. (Spinas ’83) Hill found joy in the experience of learning at Cal Lutheran. Guided by professors who opened new doors, she began to imagine the possibility of a career in medicine. “I was able to explore my education with confidence,” Hill said. “It was the way we were introduced to the intellectual side of things that made it so special.”

Hill earned a degree in medical technology from Cal Lutheran and focused her early career in lab sciences. She attended medical school at University of California, Davis, where she graduated first in her class. Following an anesthesiology residency at Stanford, she pursued fellowships in critical care medicine, cardiovascular anesthesia and pediatric anesthesia. Hill served as an assistant professor at Stanford, earning an MBA along the way. In 2011, the Emory University School of Medicine recruited her to chair the Department of Anesthesiology, a position she still holds. Hill continues to have a busy perioperative clinical practice, including preoperative evaluation, intraoperative anesthesia and critical care medicine.

As a Cal Lutheran undergraduate, Hill discovered many things she continues to appreciate today, such as the arts, literature and philosophy, which influenced her approach in mentoring the next generation of physicians. “There is so much to healing and caring beyond science,” she said. “It’s about treating the whole person and medical professionals need to be multidimensional in order to do that authentically.”

Hill remains centered on the values she gained at Cal Lutheran. Recalling the young cowgirl from Paso Robles, she is adamant about embracing the experiences. “You don’t always know where the path will lead, but there will be options along the way.

One of the greatest lessons you can learn is to be receptive to the possibilities.”

Of women in the chaplain corps, the first to go to sea

I had a great career in the Navy, though it wasn’t exactly the one I asked for.

I started to see possibilities for myself in the ministry during confirmation in seventh and eighth grade, but I didn’t get any encouragement. There just weren’t any women in the ministry anywhere.

In my junior year at Cal Lutheran, I wrote to the editors of the three different American Lutheran magazines to ask, “When do you think we will have women pastors?”

Two of them said probably not in my lifetime, and one of them made it clear he preferred things that way.

The most optimistic of the three guys said it would be 10 to 20 years.

Surprisingly, in my senior year, the decision was made to open up the ministry to women.

Although I was actually the fourth female chaplain to come on active duty in the Navy, in 1975, my three tours as a chaplain included a series of firsts.

I was the first Lutheran among the women chaplains in the Navy, and also the first female Protestant chaplain from a liturgical tradition in the U.S. armed forces. The Navy provides chaplains to the Marines, and on my first tour at Camp Pendleton, I was the first woman chaplain to serve with the Marine Corps. Then in 1980, I unexpectedly became the first woman chaplain to go to sea.

I love to be in my studio. For me, it’s getting away from the routine stuff outside.

When I’m not in the mood, I drive out, see people, see the landscape.

Sometimes I spend four days without getting out. Of course, they bring me coffee, or soda.

Fortunately, the place I am in now is an apartment upstairs. It’s not a big apartment. It has a nice view. Green. It’s opposite to the palace. So I don’t get bored.

After dinner, I sit, see the sky, the moon, the mountain. Without my knowing, it can soon be the morning.

I painted a woman in the middle of the market. Because she doesn’t have money, she is checking which thing to buy. If she had enough money, she would buy enough. I know the feelings of women. I bring these things out.

There are things I have not painted yet.

I always think that the spirit of my parents, the feelings of my parents – that I have to bring that out. But I’m so scared, because they had good hearts. I don’t know how to put that in. So I’m just thinking and thinking. I’m scared of it, because their hearts were so angelic. I still have to do that.

And Feben, my daughter, for instance. She’s beautiful, isn’t she? Her portrait, it scares me sometimes. Because she’s so beautiful and I know that she is beautiful. I say, let me wait, there is a moment to do it. I believe that. I also think that about my granddaughter.

In the paper they wrote, “If Desta was not an artist, she would be a farmer.”

(Laughs.) And I think it’s true. I love landscapes, I love to create things, I love to see things growing. Yes, I would be a farmer.

Faith Leadership Scholarship Ray Barber has worked with L.A. Family Housing for almost 20 years and sees firsthand the power of service to others. L.A. Family Housing is a nonprofit organization that helps families transition out of homelessness and poverty through a continuum of housing enriched with supportive services. They provide about 250,000 free meals per year.

Barber had the good fortune of working with the Rev. John Simmons who not only was a passionate advocate for social justice and helped start L.A. Family Housing but also was a founding member of California Lutheran University. Simmons passed away in 2013.

Inspired by Simmons’ legacy in social justice, Barber generously supported the Faith Leadership Scholarship in his memory to inspire students to make the same commitment to service.

It’s a commitment that religion and global studies double major Amanda Hutchinson takes seriously.
