The word “hybrid cars” is used to describe any car that runs on two sources of power, and this brings about a cleaner source of reliable and noiseless energy. The idea of combining two sources of energy in powering one machine is not exactly revolutionary, but the main reason that hybrids have not caught on despite being invented more than a century ago is simply because of two things - cost & appeal. But before we take a look at where we are today, it would be very helpful for us to understand the events a century ago, when hybrids were first introduced to the world.

The First Hybrid Vehicle

The Lohner-Porsche Mixte Hybrid, the first functional hybrid car in popular automotive history.

The first time that hybrid vehicles went legitimately mainstream was probably when Ferdinand Porsche introduced the System Lohner-Porsche Mixte in 1899. A young lad of 18 with no formal education, he was hired by Lohner-Werke to develop electric powertrains for coaches. Their first creation was a wholly electric machine with 4 internal-poles, which averages an output of 3.5 BHP and peaks at 7 BHP for short bursts. A later, improved model of the product was a 4-ton machine dubbed La Toujurs Contente (‘always satisfied’ in French), which carries 1.8 tonnes of 44-cell lead-acid batteries, sitting on a spring suspended battery container. It was capable of 56 horsepower and had 4 speeds, and participated in many races and competitions. APR - JUN 2016

This car eventually turned out to be the modern-day Porsche Panamera’s grand-daddy. At the time, the Mixte was rather well-received and hybrid technology garnered plenty of positive attention. Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, some of the greatest minds of the time too, have taken a crack at hybrid technology.

In 9th Jan 1914, Ford himself announced that he and Edison have been working for year to create the “Ford Electric”, and it would be coming soon to the masses with the price of U$D500 – U$D 700. It caused a storm of hype within the industry, but delays on a production date was causing a stir within the media. Edison, in an attempt to keep a strong public face said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal:

“I believe that ultimately the electric motor will be used for trucking in all large cities, and that the electric automotible will be the family carriage of the future… All trucking must come to electricity.”

Internal resistance, battery life length and leakages were some of the problems faced during development. Edison was well on his way towards solving these problems, until the fire which happened at Edison’s complex on 9th December 1914.

Edison did eventually perfect the nickel-iron battery, but many felt that it simply came too late in history. By 1911, Henry Ford’s combustion-powered vehicles have already become mainstream, with general assembly lines churning out gasoline-powered cars. Hybrid technology was just at its infancy at the time, and combustion-powered cars came at a much lower price with lot more power. Fuel efficiency meant very little back then, as little was understood by the public about the dangers of climate change and global warming.

There is some evidence that Henry Ford’s success with the combustion engine might have been spurred on by Edison himself, as Ford recalls the words of Edison the first time they met in 1896 his biography, “My Life and Work”:

“Yes, there is a big future for any light−weight engine that can develops high horsepower and be self− contained. No one kind of motive powers ever going to do all the work of the country. We do not know what electricity can do, but I take for granted that it cannot do everything. Keep on with your engine. If you can get what you are after, I can see a great future.”

Curiously, despite the large extent of the damage caused by the fire, the main laboratory was left unaffected. Edison’s complex was insured for a sum of U$D 2 million, and launch date for the “Ford Electric” was suspended indefinitely. Conspiracy theorists speculate that oil cartels got to them, causing them to abandon the project, but I doubt if we can truly know what really happened.

HYBRID CARS TODAY Fast-forward to today, hybrid cars hold a different kind of significance for the world. It represents clean and efficient energy, and this is clearly the way forward. Although hybrid technology have made enormous strides since the last century, it has yet to substitute the inefficient combustion engines we keep in our vehicles. The main reason is that when one compare the monetary costs of owning a vehicle, combustion engines still come out on top.

Initial Purchase Cost Hybrid technology is simply more expensive compared to conventional cars with combustion engines. Hybrid vehicles simply cost more to build, hence they’re sold at a premium compared to gasoline engines. Throughout the world, hybrids are generally priced 10-15% above their gasoline counterparts. In the United States for example, the Civic Sedan starts from U$D 18,640 and the Hybrid Sedan goes for U$D 24,735.

In Malaysia however, hybrids are “regulated” by the National Automotive Policy. Since 2011, Malaysia experienced an increase in hybrid sales thanks to the NAP of 2011 which allowed for full import tax and excise duty exemptions for Energy Efficient Vehicles (EEVs) with a 2.0-litre capacity or less. These exemptions made globally popular models actually affordable - the Toyota Prius, Honda Insight, CR-Z, Lexus CT200h, and the Audi A6 Hybrid all enjoyed better-than-modest sales. The tax breaks for EEVs have since then expired on 31 Dec 2014, after which exemptions are only maintained for completely-knocked-down (CKD) hybrid vehicles. Post-2014 NAP, only one vehicle was left exempted from the tax and duties – and that is the Honda Jazz Hybrid 1.3L CKD currently retailing at RM89,912.15. Certain hybrid models were promptly discontinued by dealerships because “regular” prices were simply too high. The Honda CR-Z for example - was priced at RM105k with the exemption, and RM180k without. The Audi A6 Hybrid’s price went up by over RM200k – from RM280k to upwards of RM500k overnight, because of the exemption’s expiry.

Costs of Fuel

Emissions

Efficiency is sort of the hybrid’s middle name, but how much money will it really save you in terms of fuel? Take the Honda Civic for example; the petrol version averages at 7.9L/100km, whereas the hybrid version manages 6.2L/100km. This holds true around the world, as hybrid vehicles are generally more fuel-efficient than their petrol counterparts by 10-20%. Although it is true that hybrids will ultimately yield lower fuel costs, it takes a very long period for the potential fuel savings to be realized – as long as 10-15 years depending on how often you use your car.

Hybrid vehicles generally release 15-30% less CO2 than their gasoline counterparts. Revisiting the Honda Civic example, the 1.8-litre model releases approximately 150g of CO2 every kilometer travelled. Conversely, the 1.4-litre hybrid Civic manages 109 g of CO2 emissions per kilometer. When the hybrid car is fully operating on electricity, immediate tailpipe emissions is reduced to 0%.

FUTURE FOR HYBRIDS

It is noteworthy that these potential benefits derived from reduced emissions and significantly improved fuel economy is only possible when the car operates on electricity a lot of the time. Hybrid cars are most efficient on highly congested roads when the traffic is really bad. It is during traffic jams that conventional cars become least efficient; the electric motor in hybrids allow for a clean and quiet commute.

A little more than a century ago, hybrid vehicles came in a 4-ton mobile with 1.8-ton weight in batteries. If you’re thinking about what’s in store for the hybrid vehicles of the future, your guess is probably as good as mine. However, there are some trends within the automotive industry that we can comfortably discern.

One example of such company at the forefront of hybrid technology is Phinergy, an Israel-based startup partnered with Fortune500 giant, Alcoa. Collaboration between the two is making headway into the research of “aluminium-air” battery is now coming to fruition, and Renault-Nissan has tentatively set 2017 as a due date for its series of electric cars with range-extending aluminum-air battery.

Battery Technology

Electric Efficiency!

Nickel-cadmium (a.k.a. NiCad) batteries are the go-to batteries for car manufacturers now. At this time, NiCad batteries remain a great, durable and proven technology that is often used to store energy in hybrids. Although there are – arguably – better alternatives to the NiCad setup, they’re rarely explored due to cost considerations. There are other emerging technologies for storing energy in cars show great promise for the future of hybrid cars.

Electric motors convert energy to propulsion force very efficiently, a rate of 80-95%; conversely, combustion engines convert gasoline into energy at a rate of 20-ish percentage. Hybrids combine both technologies, resulting in an overall energy efficiency rate of 30-40%. In reality, combustion engine as a way of powering a vehicle actually generates more useless heat than usable kinetic energy. The inherent inefficiency of the technology itself is why a hybrid setup is the way of the future. Electric efficiency is also the reason why electric cars are dead-quiet, and gives you instant torque when you put your foot down.
