Visiting the Normandy Beaches on the 70th anniversary of the landing, Montgó’s Tom Clarke has been told that he and his men will be awarded the Legion d’Honneur.

What they will receive is still in doubt and though the ‘Legion d Honneur’ (above in the centre) looks incredibly grand, it ceased to be awarded after the First World War, and referrence to Wikipedia, suggests it will be the ‘Liberation’ medal granted in

respect of the Second World War, rather like Royal British Legion delegates who didn’t want ‘Ordinary’ membershup to be granted to those who survived from the 1939-1945 war, because “unlike those in the 14-18 war - the 39-45 men (and women) had not been in a real war - in trenches - muck and bullets.” Again, according to Wikipedia, the ‘standards’ of many regiments were decorated with the Cross of the Knight of the Legion, but Tom’s team are not included in that historical list. We believe we speak for everyone who values liberty and freedom, and owe an incredible debt of gratitude to Tom and his colleagues, referred to by the President Nicolas Sarkosy, who told HM Queen and the people of the UK during his London visit “The French people will never forget!” Neither will we or our readers. Non-stop meetings for Councillors at end of June

Jávea Jeard

July/August 2014, Nº 15

Page 3

Councillors met in May to receive the AMJASA Annual Report and then ‘ploughed-their-way’ through the monthly Townhall business. The last Thursday in June was much busier with a lunchtime press conference promoting the International Jazz Festival, a report of the Children’s Council at 6.30pm followed at 8pm by the Councillors monthly meeting, and 90 minutes later, Everyone was wlcome at International Festival everyone was at the opening of the International businesses will be affected. School. Whether this was the Festival. (Such a pity Comptomis didn’t OLD building on Av. Juan

The monthly meeting followed the normal pattern: Point 1 Councillors approved outstanding Minutes relating to meetings held on 30th January 2014, 24th April and 28th May, 2014. Point 2 approved decisions taken by the Mayor’s Office (Alcadia) since the previous monthly meeting. Point 3 Ratified the previous decisions relating to the Central Cinema building works. 35% of the cost (539.000€) will be borne by the Townhall. Point 4 gave the opportunity for Compromis party to suggest Councillors should state their views about the Abdication of King Juan Carlos and the father’s decision to proclaim Felipe, his son, to replace him as Monarch. Compromis thought there should be a debate establishing a democratic voting system to decide on whether people preferred a Monarch to a President to be the Head of State, believing current legislation could only be invoked as a matter of urgency when the Monarch died. King Juan Carlos was elected King after years of dictatorship and that municipalities throughout the country took part in that process and election. “The reason for the abdication was to avoid scandal. This is the 21st century and it is archaic that King Juan Carlos and Sofia’s elder daughters did not have a chance to reign, on no other ground than that they were female.” Juan Planelles said Spain was a Parliamentary

Monarchy. People had no choice in Franco’s time and other European countries follow the same procedure as proposed by Compromis and it worked well. Jose Luis said he was proud to be Spanish and approved of the procedure and new Monarch, but said he would abstain from voting for the continuance of a system which has worked for years and ‘stir things up’ and not necessarily for the better. Pere also abstained and the Motion was ‘lost’ - 3 in favour, 5 against and 10 abstentions. Point 5 A Court ruling under Article 2ALGT made by the Townhall in April was passed. Point 6 The Budget for 2013 had met its objectives. Belen referred to this success and said she would like to see the results online. Mayor Chulvi said the Townhall website was being redesigned and all the information Belen suggested should be available in the next week, Point 7 Decisions made by Councillors on 29th January 2009, with respect to Cap Marti 15 in Adsubia, were approved. Point 8 The Sant Antoni rain water drainage proposal had been approved by the Environment Agency involvPing 190 square metres of land it was approved. Point 9 It was agreed that, with effect from 24th June, Plaza Almirante Bastareche will be known as Plaza Adolfo Suarez. A request to rename an area of Jávea in recognition of his life and death. Belen wanted to know how soon the signage would be modified as many

Juan Planelles was in agreement, as it was he who made the original proposal, and urged there be a commemorative act. expenditure of 17,225€. Emergency Point Normally, the Agenda is ‘cast in stone’, but the Mayor has the authority to saction changes, and so it was with the Music

Carlos, or the brand new and shiny building overlooking the Thursday market square that it was intended to replace, but whatever it was, no one had applied for a grant of 468,000€ and the closing date was passed before June’s monthly meeting was held.

Black-Hand Gang on Jávea Beach

Saturday June 28th saw a concerted effort at 6.00pm with the concebed gathered in harmony on the Arenal beach in Jávea to form a human chain in protest against oil prospecting in the Mediterranean. Participants were asked to wear black and paint their hands black. Their slogan was "Nos sobra la energía" ("We have plenty of energy"). Once the chain was formed, a manifesto against oil exploration and for renewables was read. This is part of the Xàbia Diu No campaign coordinated by the Town Hall to reject oil prospecting in defense of the environment, tourism and fishing industry.

(Alicante) along with her partner Daniel Gilabert, who have partnered with local fishermen who still use traditional techniques to showcase their artisan work. Working out of small boats near the coast, the fishermen catch octopus with cadufos, traps spaced out along an underwater line. They also use the trasmallo, a three-net combination used to capture bottom-dwelling fish and crustaceans. “Right now there are just six traditional fishing boats in operation here,” notes Velasco, whose up-closeand-personal fishing tour is promoted by local authorities through the local tourism office.

Supreme Court rules in favour of oil prospecting off Canary Islands

Oil prospecting may be conducted in the Canary Islands after all. The Supreme Court has rejected seven appeals filed by island authorities, green groups and leftist parties against a 2012 decree authorising hydrocarbon exploration in the waters off the archipelago. The project has been clearing hurdles since 2001, when a royal decree granted the oil giant Repsol exploration rights for six years. The Supreme Court cancelled the license, because it lacked the necessary environmental permissions. In 2012, the conservative government of the Popular Party decided Repsol had resolved any existing deficiencies and issued the exploration license again in a new decree. The company may now drill three wells up to 5,000 metres deep around 60 kilometres from the coastline.

Tourism up over first 5 months

The Comunidad Valenciana saw an increase of 7% in tourism in the first five months of 2014, with a total of more than 2 million tourists. Germans and Belgians were the main groups involved in the increase. UK visitors saw a jump of 5.1% over the previous year.

Fast Food chains open at the Arenal

Two major fast food chains have opened eateries at the Arenal, both on the Avda de Libertad. "Lizarrán", the pinchos and montaditos chain will be opening up near perfumeria Marsal, and "Subway" - the sandwich and salad bar will open premises in the Ecisa block - near the Moragues Pons office and the Mara souvenir shop. These last two will join the french bakery and coffee shop - "La baguette de France".

55,000€ up in flames

The contract went out without tender to well-known foguera artist: José Sanchís Izquierdo, and the cost has met with some criticism in these days of austerity.

Spanish families prioritising education and health over entertainment

If there is any reliable indicator that the budding economic recovery has yet to be felt by Spanish households, it would probably be the amount parents give to their children for pocket-money. A survey of 2013 family budgets released on by the National Statistics Institute shows weekly allowances fell an average 21 percent last year, bringing an accumulated drop of over 50% since 2006. Statistics show that the hotel and restaurant industries are continuing to do well despite the domestic drop in spending, thanks to foreign receipts. According to Industry Ministry figures, foreign tourists spent a record €14.9 billion between January and April of this year, a 11.2% rise from the same period in 2013.

Port project to start after the summer

The long-awaited project to re-arrange parking along Avda Jaime I and extend pavements in the Port will now begin after summer 2015. The contract for the works was awarded in 2013 with a start date of 15th September 2013. Because of several changes to the contract before the works began, the Townhall was forced by law to cancel and re-award it.

First step to link Montanyar with Calle Genova

The abandoned Villa Sarita on the Montanar sea front will be demolished over the coming weeks to make way for a road to link the coast road with Calle Génova. Before demolition, Jávea's archaeologist will carry out a survey to document the house and the tosca stone arches will be conserved. The cost to the municipal coffers of purchasing the house and its land was some €500,000, while demolition will cost €50,000. The resulting dirt road will enable temporary access, at least for pedestrians over the summer, and after the season a further €200,000 will be spent on a proper asphalt road with pavements etc. Residents have also asked if it is possible to open pedestrian access to the sea across a bank-owned building plot near Calle Naples. Two Participatory budget proposals from last year look as if they might see the light of day, watch this column.

Missing teenager

Just to note that Xàbia teenager, of Ukranian origin, Krystyna has been missing from home for 4 weeks now. It seems she was "groomed" over the internet by someone from Germany. The town, students at Port Instituto and parents have been pleading for her to come home. So far with no luck. Posters are all over town. Anyone with information should contact: Guardia Civil: 96-5791085 or 062 Policía Local: 96-5790081.

French Couple attacked

Las Provincias reported that an elderly French couple and their Grandson were attacked in their home in Rafalet by a gang with a pistol and baseball bat at 7.00am, using threats of violence to get money and jewels out of the safe, and still beat up the man. This has been the first such crime in the area for several years.

Fire destroyed twice as much forest as last year

Forest fires in the Comunidad Valenciana had destroyed 1003 hectares over the first five months of the year, almost double the area scorched over the same period last year (524ha). The reasons are complex, but the amount of inflammable brush and dry conditions are most important, combined with abandoned agricultural land, bad management, carelessness and out of control agricultural fires. In related stories, Jávea saw temperatures of 34.9 degrees at the Pont Continued on page 12 Consciencious English lady (speaks Spanish) seeks work, caring for the elderly, frail or vulnerable. BOB YAREHAM REMINDS US OF OUR CELLULOID PAST

When the mist had cleared two fierce, heavily armed armies faced each other on the green slopes of the Sierra de Urbasa in the northern province of Navarra, and yet the only exchange of fire was the local fire water known as ‘orujo’, which is just as well, as Patton’s army would almost certainly have massacred Cromwell’s, even though both consisted of largely Spanish soldiers. The incident took place in 1971 and demonstrates how popular the scenery of Spain has been for film makers over the years. The Russian steppes of Doctor Zhivago, the Middle East Palaces of Lawrence of Arabia and the Ardennes forests of The Battle of the Bulge were all located in Spain, specifically Soria, Seville and Segovia respectively. The film makers’ romance with Spanish scenery and Spanish castle magic reached a high point when Leon Trotsky’s nephew, American citizen and film producer Samuel Bronston, took advantage of American Big Business

dollars trapped in Franco’s Spain and a Spanish army enthusiastically for hire, to make a series of epic movies such as The Fall of the Roman Empire, 55 Days at Peking and of course El Cid, although he started with the lesser known John Paul Jones, starring Robert Untouchable Stack in the story of the American Admiral who fought the British, in a film shot mostly on the Costa Blanca and featuring Mia Farrow in her first role (her father was the director). When Richard Harris as Cromwell charged against the King’s men, Spain would have been nothing new to him; he had already played King Arthur there, riding out from Camelot, which in the 1967 musical was in fact the Segovian castle of Coca. Lancelot’s castle was the better known Alcazar of Segovia, scene of many films such as Orson Welles’ Mister Arkadin, The Pride and the Passion and Richard Lester’s The Three Musketeers, where Charlton Heston employs it as the Bastille to imprison a bewildered Spike Milligan. Harris would be back for more, with Spanish scenery for two Man Called Horse sequels, Robin and Marian with Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn, where he receives a mortal blow as King Richard in front of Villalonso castle in Zamora province, and a number of westerns, while Heston would dedicate many years to making a variety of films in Spain. Spaghetti westerns are of course associated with the deserts of Almeria, where tourists can still visit western townships that have been used in so many films, and where they can watch shootouts from the comfort of the souvenir shop, although the first of these films, including Leone’s Fistful of Dollars, started shooting around Madrid, and especially in a valley called Dehesa de Navalvillar, where, not only was the first Spanish western filmed in 1958; the Sheriff of Fractured Jaw starring Robert Morley, Sid James and Kenneth More, but so was the final battle of Spartacus. With more than a thousand castles, it is not surprising that film makers should have decamped in Spain; Katherine Hepburn spent a summer in Atienza, Guadalajara making The Trojan Women, with the local castle walls filling

July/August 2014 Nº 15

Page 7

in for Troy, while blacksmith Orlando Bloom kept the iron hot beneath the walls of Loarre Castle in Huesca because director Ridley Scott couldn’t find an authentic medieval French castle in France. More recently, Spain has offered its varied landscapes to represent Iraq (Murcia) in Matt Damon’s Green Zone, Kurdistan (Alicante) in Colin Farrell’s Triage and The Ancient Greece of the Gods (Canary Islands) in Clash of the Titans (in the original version with Laurence Olivier some scenes were shot in Malaga, in the same area where Sinatra bit the rails in Von Ryan’s Express). Sir Laurence met his own fate on Spanish soil at Bosworth (just outside Madrid actually) in Richard III. All of this information and much much more can be found on a web site with information about 700 English language films made and being made in Spain, which has been created in Valencia by East Ender Bob Yareham, who has lived and taught English there for 30 years, and local IT expert Juan José Cermeño. www.silver-screen-spain.com

Satellite Fact File

It’s time to be helpful

This month I thought it might be of help if I produced a few notes to help when you experience reception problems, often after a return from Holiday. Maybe you have experienced a bad storm or possibly one of the black hand gang has been brought to visit by Mum or Dad and decided to alter your satellite receiver settings! It does happen, judging by the number of requests to call round and sort things out! Thunder and Lightening !!! Lightning and thunder can badly damage several areas of a satellite installation, Obviously the larger a dish is, the chances of a 'hit' are increased! My advice would always be, very quickly remove the actual connection from the satellite dish input cable/s from the satellite

receiver itself and a belts and braces method would be to also disconnect the satellite receiver and also the TV etc at the same time. In particular unscrewing the F plugs from the rear of the satellite receiver can be awkward to say the least, often you find that one, possibly two cables are difficult to reach or involves having to partly turn round the equipment, Worse can be if the cables are a little too short. It’s possible to purchase F plugs that are a 'Push Fit' and this does make unplugging and re-plugging equipment much easier.

The first item that carries the highest risk of damage is the LNB mounted on the dish and on examination you will in most cases see the cables running from the LNB to your equipment, If that proves to be the case then a replacement will be required. At this point you will require the services of a competent technician who on replacing this item will also adjust the LNB for maximum performance. To this end you must insist that he uses test equipment and specifically has a Spectrum Analyser in order to ensure a balanced output covering all the required Stations.

Often it's the case on connecting your equipment you are rewarded by an on screen message advising that No Satellite Signals are being received (or something similar) often caused by the satellite receiver internal microprocessor losing the Default setting! This information only applies to the Sky range of products as they are constantly fed with information that keeps the processor effectively connected to information supplied by Sky along with lots more information in a constant stream! Part of the processing can be thought of as an electric flywheel running at a constant speed with a very close tolerance. When this gets out of step with the sky signal then it must be corrected by re-inserting the required linkage i.e. The Default frequency!

If you are adept at this sort of adjustment which does involve going into the engineering set-up it's quite possible to adjust yourself. Failing this details can be located using Google and including the make and model of your satellite receiver. One important point here, as we are in Spain ensure you follow these settings and not anything otherwise quoted, as follows 12207. Vert. 27.5 and 2/3. If required I can usually help, again I too would also require the make and model.

BIKERS ARE HERE TO HELP

Jávea Jeard

A tough looking group of bikers were riding when they saw a woman about to jump off a bridge, so they stopped. The leader, a big burly man, gets off his bike and says, "What are you doing?" "I'm going to commit suicide," she says. While he didn't want to appear insensitive, he didn't want to miss an opportunity either, so he asked... "Well, before you jump, why don't you give me a kiss?" So she does... And it was a long, deep, lingering kiss. After it was finished, the biker says, "Wow! That was the best kiss I've ever had! That's a real talent you are wasting. You could be famous. Why in the world would you want to commit suicide?" "My parents don't like me dressing up like a girl........". The authorities think she may have been pushed. from Ian Thomas

HEARD ON THE LONDON UNDERGROUND TUBE

A list of actual announcements that London Tube train drivers have made to their passengers... 1) 'Ladies and Gentlemen, I do apologize for the delay to your service. I know you're all dying to get home, unless, of course, you happen to be married to my ex-wife, in which case you'll want to cross over to the Westbound and go in the opposite direction.' 2) 'Your delay this evening is caused by the line controller suffering from E & B syndrome: not knowing his elbow from his backside. I'll let you know any further information as soon as I'm given any.' 3) 'Do you want the good news first or the bad news? The good news is that last Friday was my birthday and I hit the town and had a great time. The bad news is that there is a points failure somewhere between Mile End and East Ham, which means we probably won't reach our destination.' 4) 'Ladies and gentlemen, we apologize for the delay, but there is a security alert at Victoria station and we are therefore stuck here for the foreseeable future, so let's take our minds off it and pass some time together. All together now.... 'Ten green bottles, hanging on a wall......' 5) 'We are now travelling through Baker Street ... As you can see, Baker Street is closed. It would have been nice if they had actually told me, so I could tell you earlier, but no, they don't think about things like that'.

YOU DESERVE  A LAUGH

6) 'Beggars are operating on this train. Please do NOT encourage these professional beggars. If you have any spare change, please give it to a registered charity. Failing that, give it to me.' 7) During an extremely hot rush hour on the Central Line, the driver announced in a West Indian drawl: 'Step right this way for the sauna, ladies and gentlemen... unfortunately, towels are not provided.' 8) 'Let the passengers off the train FIRST!' (Pause ) 'Oh go on then, stuff yourselves in like sardines, see if I care - I'm going home....' 9) 'Please allow the doors to close. Try not to confuse this with 'Please hold the doors open.' The two are distinct and separate instructions.' 10) 'Please note that the beeping noise coming from the doors means that the doors are about to close. It does not mean throw yourself or your bags into the doors.' 11) 'We can't move off because some idiot has their hand stuck in the door.' 12) 'To the gentleman wearing the long grey coat trying to get on the second carriage - what part of 'stand clear of the doors' don't you understand?' 13) 'Please move all baggage away from the doors.' (Pause..) 'Please move ALL belongings away from the doors.' (Pause...) 'This is a personal message to the man in the brown suit wearing glasses at the rear of the train: Put the pie down, Four-eyes, and move your bloody golf clubs away from the door,' 14) 'May I remind all passengers that there is strictly no smoking allowed on any part of the Underground. However, if you are smoking a joint, it's only fair that you pass it round the rest of the carriage.' I am a Dutch lady and speak several languages. interrupted for a very brief or on occasion an hour or so! (Sadly in Jávea they can last much longer, I know!) These interruptions are known as 'outages' although I can think of a few other names, bet you can as well! If you are a regular sufferer of outages, yes it can be the Electric Company to blame, on the other hand it can be where you live, often this problem is associated with people operating equipment from an apartment where many users are all connected in close proximity, hence the mains can also carry spikes that can upset sensitive equipment! This is where the purchase of a UPS is worth considering. They also can improve the reliability of your P.C. Let me explain: You insert the UPS between your mains supply and your equipment that is proving to be a problem. (in this case your satellite receiver.) Within the UPS, on receiving the mains input this is converted into a DC voltage and fed into a quality battery that depending on its specification, can hold a charge for some 30 mins or much

longer depending on the amount of current your equipment requires and of course battery size. The DC output from the battery is converted back into the mains supply, usually some 230/240 Volts AC however it's what we call a pure sine wave and spikes no longer exist! In practice they cure many of the problems - if not all. These days the more expensive types also contain cooling fans etc and depending on your required current expect to pay in the region of 70/80 euros upwards, In my opinion money well spent.

SELLING OUR WATER TO OUR NEIGHBOURS

Jávea Mayor Jose Chulvi and CEO Amjasa, Josep Lluis Henarejos, met with mayors of Teulada, Benitachell, Benissa and a Calpe Councillor to design a common policy to water level. The meeting held in Teulada, continues the first such meeting, held in Jávea during the month of January in which a compromise for global action was reached to create a common network infrastructure (pipes, tanks and transport from the desalination plant) to connect the region and the common response to demand for drinking water, in addition to recovering the depleted aquifers. In a year marked by drought, Chulvi made available to the other towns of Jávea, the desalination plant, an industry with enough energy to power the neighbouring municipalities and from the south of the region seen as key to ensure supply. Industry can solve specific problems with a lack of rain, but above all, give long-term security of water supply and conservation of the wells. This, say the makers, previous work required to connect local water

networks -something that both the mayor of Jávea, like Teulada, Joan Antoni Bertomeu, defined as technically possible. The previous meeting was very positive and it was agreed that the next contact will be at technical level to concrete actions. Bertomeu has also agreed there is a political will in all municipalities to find common solution to a problem that is shared and that affects a basic necessity like water. Jávea desalination plant has the ability to inject 3,000 cubic meters of into the network and the new task remains connecting Benissa and Calpe, because although the production capacity of the desalination plant is sufficient, the problem is transportation.

Move to Portal del Clot offices over the coming months

Jávea Town Hall will move some of its departments to the new, and long empty offices above Portal del Clot over the coming months. These include the local police and Technical Office, Urban planning and works, Creama and Afic. Municipal archives will be in the basement (800m2) with a shooting range for the police. The furbishment and furnishing of the building will cost some €3million, since currently it is just a shell. This 6 month contract will soon go out to tender. The project will be financed from the underspend on a low cost loan which the Town had received from the Ministry of Industry for works on the Freginal barranquet. Return of the unspent portion of the loan would have meant a penalty of €600,000, so the money might as well be made use of,

Amjasa services 400 water hydrants

AMJASA is inspecting the almost 400 fire hydrants around Jávea to ensure they are fully operational. Last September, Civil Protection prepared an App which pinpoints their locations so emergency services can find the closest hydrants using GPS. Using this database, AMJASA has been repairing or replacing damaged hydrants some of which had been decommissioned. In addition AMJASA has supplied a tablet to the Civil Defence volunteers to enable them to access this App. A few months ago AMJASA donated a new pump to the volunteer fire-fighters. Everything you need to survive the Spanish Health Service - for 6,50€

The Health Service in Spain is every bit as good - and many say MUCH better than in the UK, but no matter the level of professionalism and skill of the doctor or nursing staff - if you don’t speak Spanish, ‘Murphy’s Law’ says those who care for you will not understand English or Spanglish. What they DO understand on the Costa Blanca, and instantly recognise, is the Booklet “Tell the Doctor” which lists all the words and phrases you are likely to need during your visit to the Health Centre or Hospital. The book is NOT intended to replace a competent Interpreter for those visits when accuracy and understanding are essential. Originally compiled by Jenny Bussey, founder of Jalon Valley HELP, copies can be obtained from the OASIS HELP CENTRE, C/. Toni Llido 5 (at the rear of La Caixa bank in the Port) for 6,50€ a copy. Tell the Doctor is also published in French and German, but the OASIS generally only stocks the (blue covered) English edition.

One step closer for some longstanding Xàbia projects

Jávea Town Council has agreed to unblock the implementation of some long-standing projects, the completion of which will amount to a million Euros. 1. An extension of Calle Vicenza, allowing a new connection between the coastal road along the Montañar (Arenal to the Port) and Avenida Augusta. This has required the purchase and demolition of an old house which was blocking the development. (€228,500). 2. Creation of a new public space in the Port - in the empty plot near Bar Clavo (old Guardia Civil building) (€120,000 2013 Participatory Budget proposal). 3. Taking responsibility for finishing off the Via Augusta between Calle Venecia and the school (€700,000 - 2013 Participatory Budget proposal). Works will begin after the summer. In addition a new zebra crossing will be made across the Cabo de la Nao / Pla "super highway" - at the roundabout which has a turn off to the Avenida Augusta and Canal de la Fontana. Ed's note: Currently you can only cross safely on foot or bike, by going under the road through the Canal de la Fontana storm drain, which doubles as an underpass for very short people!

Mural by renowned artist rescued for Jávea

The López-Criado clothes shop in Valencia is moving premises, and has arranged for a mural, eleven metres long, to be rescued from the shop wall which it has graced for the past 60 years. The mural, painted on three cotton canvases by Jávea artist, Juan Bautista Segarra, depicts a hunting scene with four riders and dogs chasing a deer. Segarra was a follower of Swiss artist, André Lambert (resident of Jávea whose paintings will feature in a large exhibition in Jávea this summer). Seven technicians from the Valencia Institute of conservation and restoration will carry out the work to protect the painting and remove it from the wall. It will then be restored at the Institute before being brought to Jávea.

Jesús Pobre publishes guide to rural architecture

The guide is a move to promote out-ofseason cultural tourism in Dénia and gives a map and information on three farmsteads in the municipality, the riuraus, 19C houses, windmills etc. It links with the Marina Alta "Route of the Riuraus" - prepared by 12 municipalities in the region, and which does not include Dénia or Jesus Pobre.

World Environment Day

"World Environment Day” (5th June) is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment. Over the years it has grown to be a broad, global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated by stakeholders in over 100 countries. It also serves as the ‘people’s day’ for doing something positive for the environment, galvanizing individual actions into a collective power that generates an exponential positive impact on the planet."

Funding for Denia Castle projects

The ministry of Finance has approved funding for two projects to improve Denia castle (under "Plan Confianza" programme). Specifically, the projects authorized by the Generalitat Valenciana are the redevelopment of access to the castle down Sant Francesc street (367,731 euros), and improvements to the castle in terms of lighting, placement of new signage and removing pine trees (400,000 euros).

Jávea courts social media experts to promote tourism

Leading influences in the travel sector were invited to Jávea for a special conference through which it is hoped they will recommend the town as a place to spend a holiday through their blogs and other social networks. Councillor Antonio Miragall (Tourism), whose department has been advised by social media consultant Mario Schumacher, explained the initiative (called "funtrip") would allow the invited professionals not only to discover Jávea and all its possibilities but also to experience the fiesta of Sant Joan and the magical 'Nits dels Focs'.

Jávea takes Oil exploration issue to the senate

Two months ago Marina Alta mayors asked for a meeting with the Valencia Government to address the issue of planned oil exploration in the Gulf of Valencia. Since nothing has been forthcoming in that direction, Mayor Chulvi took advantange of a trip to Madrid (where he was attending the Spanish Federation of municipalities and Provinces) to bring the case to the National Senate via Socialist senators. Apparently the Senate intends to repeat the debate on the issue, this time with the presence of representatives of the communities affected. This complements action initaited with the European Parliament and Chulvi has pledged to keep fighting to the last minute to prevent the exploration project to go ahead, including an appeal to the courts. - - - - - - - - - - ---

General Plan meetings

I attended the meeting on the new General Town Plan with very few others! - my report for the Wiki is below. There were quite a few Brits - some were concerned about the continued presence of a shooting range on la Plana within the bounds of the Montgó Natural Park. They were informed that this was under the remit of the Valencia Government, which had modified the "PORN" - ( reguilations governing the park) to allow the ranges to be there.

The Powerpoint presentation was primarily a briefing. It was was bilingual, but presented in castellano by a representative from IDOM, the consulting company which is organising the exercise. Oscar was there to translate, but only if you asked specifically. Two Brits left because they didn't understand anything. The presentation was a general briefing, not dealing with specific local issues. I can’t say I understand how IMOS (below) relates to the urban(isable) land in Jávea. The figures given are an IMOS of 36.95% = 1,678,615m2 ... implying (when I asked) an increase of around 5% of urban land over the next 25 years (I may very well be wrong on this). The citizen participation thing is that with feedback from people about how they see Jávea in the future, and which landscapes they value, then some choices can be made about when, where, and what to develop (houses, nurseries, Old Folks residences etc.). More meetings will be held in the Urbanisations etc. Note: The Town Hall does not know how many dwellings have been built, and still remain unsold or empty, and it's not possible to oblige people, by law, to sign up on the padrón. I have put links to the questionnaires on the Wiki...but am pessimistic about how many people, even the local Javiense, will be bothered to fill them in (13 pages....) Chris

New General Town Plan constraints on development explained

Only around 10 people attended the second meeting on Public Participation on the new general Town Plan at the beginning of July. The Consultant's (IDOM) representative showed a Powerpoint (in English and Spanish) explaining some of the new legal constraints for the new general town plan. These included the presence of protected areas (Montgó natural Park, Granadella etc), flood zones, new laws stipulating the presence of "green corridors" connecting wild spaces, and

situations in which they find themselves, Jávea policemen are going to be eligible for retirement sooner than the previous terms had allowed.

Juan Planelles said new Security Laws were being introduced for existing urbanisations. It is believed that SUMA will have responsibility for collecting fines, but this will be clarified at the July councillors meeting.

Jose Luis welcomed the various fundraising activities by the people of Jávea, but questioned the need for such large areas of road to be closed with resulting detours. The Triathalon blocked off a complete area of popular road for hours. During the fiestas many streets in the old town (and soon the Port) are inaccessible and more thought and planning is needed. There were complaints about the continuous white line along Camino de Cabanes, as a result of surface painting. If a driver needed to turn round (as I understand it), they have to drive to a roundabout at one of the ends of the road. José Chulvi said he thought it was a road safety measure and would ask.

Compromis reminded councillors that the 15 year old from the Port Instituto was still missing. For some reason the police had decided a ‘quiet’ approach was preferred as they did not wecome the publicity that a kidnapping might produce.

Belen asked for a statement about the Quality Homes being built on Avda. Ultramar. The Licence was issued and at one point there was a threat to sue the builders for non-performance. Costas said the ober-build should be demolished but the builder has agreed to pay cash compensation. The Townhall is fighting that option. The promoters have again appealed to Alicante, forseeing the possibility of people who legally purchased their homes, seeing them demolished.

BEWARE THE USEFUL IDIOTS

Recall that Hillary did her college thesis on Alinsky writings and Obama writes about him in his books. Saul Alinsky died about 43 years ago, but his writings influenced those in political control of our nation today.......

Died: June 12, 1972, Carmel-by-theSea, CA Education: University of Chicago Spouse: Irene Alinsky Books: Rules for Radicals, Reveille for Radicals

Anyone out there think that this stuff isn't happening today in the U.S. ? All eight rules are currently in play. How to create a social state by Saul Alinsky: There are eight levels of control that must be obtained before you are able to create a social state. The first is the most important. 1) Healthcare – Control healthcare and you control the people. 2) Poverty – Increase the Poverty level as high as possible, poor people are easier to control and will not fight back if you are providing everything for them to live. 3) Debt – Increase the debt to an unsustainable level. That way you are able to increase taxes, and this will produce more poverty. 4) Gun Control – Remove the ability to defend themselves from the Government. That way you are able to create a police state. 5) Welfare – Take control of every aspect of their lives (Food, Housing, and Income). 6) Education – Take control of what people read and listen to – take control of what children learn in school. 7) Religion – Remove the belief in the God from the Government and schools. 8) Class Warfare – Divide the people into the wealthy and the poor. This will cause more discontent and it will be easier to take (Tax) the wealthy with the support of the poor. Does any of this sound like what is happening to the United States and Britain? Alinsky merely simplified Vladimir Lenin's original scheme for world conquest by communism, under Russian rule. Stalin described his converts as "Useful Idiots."

The Useful Idiots have destroyed every nation in which they have seized power and control. It is presently happening at an alarming rate in the U.S. and Britain. from Ian Thomas

INDOOR MARKET OPEN DURING SUMMER EVENINGS

There’s going to be a lot of activity at the Indoor Market during the Summer months. Not only are many of the stalls having a ‘make-over’ but the Market will remain open during the evening, taking advantage of more (hungry and thirsty) people walking the streets with unspent money in their pockets or purses. A similar experiment was so successful last year that it was decided to make the ambience even more attractive, with the hope that it will become an annual event.

Woman to Woman Jávea Jeard

(but men are welcome)

We’re all going on our Summer holiday

When the Spanish school year came to a close and the children were free to enjoy weeks of fun during the summer holidays, it brought back memories of my childhood. I can remember the feeling of happiness and freedom as I walked around our back garden when school had closed for the summer knowing I could forget about school and lessons for weeks.

Many children today go abroad for their holidays but life in the 40s and 50s was quite different. Mum and Dad had four children, I was the oldest, Linda two years younger than me, Derek two years younger than Linda and Carol four years younger than Derek. After all the bills

for the week had been paid, there was little money left for luxuries, like holidays. But most mornings, Mum would pack sandwiches and bottles of squash in Carol's pushchair and we would all walk to our Auntie's house in Bermondsey. Auntie Lilly had two daughters, Janet who was Derek's age and Irene who was Carol's age. We would all walk to Southwark park about half-an-hour away and spend a wonderful day on the swings and in the paddling pool. Mum and Auntie Lilly would sit and knit while they watched us children playing. Linda and I were book worms and would always take a book to read when we had enough of playing. We were never happier than when we had a book in our hands and visited the local library three times a week to change our books for new ones.

Page 17

Auntie Violet and Uncle Bill who lived in Peckham were married late in life and had no children so they were often included in family outings and parties. They both had good jobs and could afford luxuries that our families couldn't. For two years running they hired two wooden cabins in Camber Sands and we all went to stay there for two weeks. Each cabin only had two bedrooms so it was a squeeze for all of us, six adults and seven children (our cousin Ina had come on holiday with us, she was two years older than me). Linda and I slept on a settee (top and tail) in the lounge, and it was very uncomfortable especially when we had too much sun and suffered from sunburn.

The cabins were very basic with no running water and I watched with amazement as Mum poured water into a pump in the back garden to prime it before it gushed out with icy cold water. I could never understand why water had to poured in the pump first before the water came out. We were close to the sandy beach and spent hours playing in the sand and in the sea. I never remember it raining, they were just long Continued on page 20

Agenda 21 Udates Continued from page 15 an index called "maximum land occupation index" (IMOS) based on population, projected population growth, being a sea-side town and employment. The Padron register had been used as the population figure, though as people remarked this is way from the true figure.. The calculations produced figures limiting the maximum land occupation for housing and employment. Previously, Townhalls had dreamed up with their own figures. The next meeting concerns the questionnaire on people's observations and ideas for Jávea and its landscape.

Jávea launches new website

Jávea Townhall has launched a new design website which can be accessed from PC, tablet and phone. Each department can update its own information, and the site shares its calendar with the Tourism department. People can even print receipts for municipal taxes and print info for tax returne. The site is, as before: http://www.ajxabia.org/ Soon, the virtual office will be more capable. The site cost €12,500 and is the most modern in the sector.

Montaner park. The grant is part of the "Plan Millor 2014" geared towards the adaptation of tourist resources. The full cost of the project (prioritised by voting in the 2014 Participatory Budget exercise) is €84,538 and will include installing old beams and gabled roofing, electricity wiring, lighting both inside and out and signage. It is planned that this will become a cultural tourism resource.

San Antonio Lighthouse to be a hotel

Alicante Ports authority has taken the first steps to convert the lighthouse on the Cabo de San Antonio into a hotel. This is part of a national initiative to rehabilitate uninhabited lighthouses into hotels and restaurants. Some parts of Jávea Townhall were a bit put out that they had not been earlier informed of this initiative, but on the whole the idea has met with a positive response, since this may well enhance Xàbia's Tourism. The other lighthouse, at Cabo de la Nao will not receive the same treatment since it is still inhabited by the lighthouse keeper and his family.

Exit of immigrants sees Spain’s population fall for second year in a row

The migratory balance – i.e. the difference between the number of people who arrived in Spain and those who left – was negative, coming in at 256,849. A total of 291,041 people arrived in Spain last year from abroad, while 547,890 left. That figure was up 80.2% on last year…Emigration and the adoption of Spanish nationality – 230,581 foreigners become Spaniards last year – saw the total number of non-Spaniards living in the country fall by 7.82% at the end of 2013, leaving a total of 4,676,022 foreign residents in the country.

Forest fires 'could be thwarted 20 years before they break out,' says WWF Forest fires could be prevented 20 years ahead of their happening if the government would invest sufficient funds, says Spain's branch of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Effectively, a fire which breaks out this summer could have been avoided with proper planning in 1994, the leading environmental charity claims. Every year, an average of 15,600 wildfires break out – mostly in summer – of which 28 are raging infernos wiping out massive areas of land and threatening the safety of some of Spain’s most attractive landscape.

Gorgos bridge is falling down

The bridge which crosses the mouth of the Gorgos River just south of the Port was badly damaged by the floods of 2007, and is now starting to crumble. Heavy traffic is not allowed to cross it and the local bus route has had to be changed to avoid it. The underside of the bridge is in a very poor state, with chunks of concrete having fallen off, exposing rusty reinforcement iron. Xàbia Town Hall has therefore decided to invite a proper in-depth study of the state of the bridge, at a tender price of €50,000. However, repair or demolition would be beyond the economic resources of the Town Hall. After the devastating floods of 2007, the regional rivers authority, (Confederación Hidrográfica del Júcar) declared the bridge ‘unsafe’.

are held at 5-yearly intervals in Spain (unless there is an energency). PSOE will expect to win more votes - and have more councillors. and likely will, unless their traditional enemies enter into a ‘pact’ as the losers did when they stole the victory off the PP.

sunny days. When it was bath time, out came the galvanised bath which was placed in the back yard and filled up with warm water. Carol being the youngest went in first, then Irene second (after a kettle full of hot water had been added), then one by one until all of us children had been bathed. While we waited for our turn in the bath, we ran around the yard chasing each other, completely naked, and thinking nothing of it.

Ina, Linda and I were allowed to go out to play on our own but we were forbidden to go anywhere near the canal. Being children, we loved the canal and were fascinated to stand on the sloping banks watching the crabs in the dirty muddy water below. Ina said we could go there but we mustn't say anything to Mum, or she would get into trouble and Mum would stop us going out on our own.

One afternoon, Mum got us all washed and put us into clean clothes because we were going to walk to Clacton and we were told not to get dirty. While the rest of the family were getting ready, Ina, Linda and I crept off to spend a few minutes at the canal before leaving for Clacton. While we were on the slopes Linda lost her footing, and Ina who was close by grabbed her arm to stop her from falling in. Unfortunately, she shoved me in the back to stop herself from losing her footing and in I went, head first into the dirty, smelly canal. I can still remember it so vividly, I remember screaming "CRABS" as I fell in. The canal wasn't deep and when I emerged I was covered from head to foot with slime. My lovely long hair was completely covered in the slime and I was so scared. Falling into the canal was bad enough but to have to go back and face my Mum was even more terrifying. Mum had enormous hands, they were like shovels and when she smacked, you knew all about it.

My Auntie Lilly told me years later that when they saw us return to the cabin, I looked like the creature from the black lagoon walking up the road. Mum was furious, she dragged me into the back yard, primed the pump and washed me from head to foot in the icy cold water. I was shaking with cold and fear of the good hiding that I would get afterwards,

but Mum worked all her anger out washing me in the cold water. I think she felt I had my punishment. Ina of course denied everything and said that when she realised Linda and I had gone to the canal alone to look at the crabs, she went there to persuade us to leave.

When we were older, we didn't spend every day at Southwark Park but stayed at home. Because we had been assessed as a needy family, all four of us children were entitled to free school lunches, even during the school holidays. So each day we left home to go for our free bottle of milk at 11am and then to stay in the playground to wait for our lunch which was served at 12 noon. We all attended Monson Primary School that catered for children during the school holidays. After lunch we would go to the Play Centre which was held at the school from 1pm to 6pm Monday to Friday. They were wonderful times. The people that supervised the centre were so caring. We spent hours playing rounders with the boys in the playground and hours inside being taught to sew and embroider or to play board games.

On Friday afternoons it was show time and I remember writing plays for my friends to take part in. My heroines and heroes were always called "Prince Charming and Princess Rosebud". Show time was a bit like Britain's Got Talent for amateur children. We danced, sang and acted week after week, convinced that we were so marvellous. And our supervisors shouted and clapped as each act came to an end as if we were all professional stars. They were wonderful times and probably seen through rose coloured spectacles! One of the supervisors worked at a factory that made clothes and she used to bring bags of remnants which she would give us, by the handful so we had plenty of beautiful material to make clothes for our dolls.

At 5pm we all stopped for afternoon tea, a plate of sandwiches, cake and drink for fivepence. Good value for the money and it meant Mum didn't have to feed us when we finally got home after 6pm every day, exhausted and ready to go to bed promptly at 7pm every night. Linda and I didn't go to sleep straight away of course, but we would read our books until our eyes couldn't stay open any longer!

Dad changed jobs and worked on the railways at New Cross Gate. As a worker he could get cheap rail fares for immediate family during the year and once a year free tickets to take his family anywhere in the UK. Dad was born and brought up in Rhostyllen, near Wrexham in North Wales and he took the opportunity to take us all to visit Nana every summer. I loved those holidays. Nana was a very homely person who loved to cook huge pans of stew with pearl barley in it with chunks of crusty bread to dip in it. At home Mum did the ironing with an electric iron plugged into the light socket (does anyone remember doing that?) But Nana had two flat irons which she heated up on the fire range, we would watch her as she ironed with one while the other heated up and I must say, the results were perfect, much better than we achieved with our electric iron.

I had a special relationship with my Nana and when the fortnight was over and we were due to go home, I begged my Dad to change my ticket so I could stay with Nana for the remainder of the school holidays, which he did. Nana and I had a fabulous time together, we would go into Wrexham on the bus to the market to buy all our fresh vegetables. Sometimes my Auntie Lilly, Uncle Walter and cousin Barry would come from Warrington to stay with Nana for a few days. We would go for long walks along the beautiful lanes and would stop at a local pub for a drink and Barry and I would sit outside with a bottle of pop and bag of crisps. A real luxury for me as we didn't have money to spend on crisps, except at Christmas. I was always sorry when they returned to Warrington and Nana and I were left on our own again. I made friends with some of the local children and we would spend hours Continued on page 25

EARLY PENSION SCAM EGM SHEDULED FOR JÁVEA So many victims live in this area, of a SCAM aimed at relieving pre-pensioners of their hardearned cash, that two Emergency General Meetings will be held in July in Jávea.

Angela Brooks who is representing the victime, gives us this (complicated) background of where we are and how we got here. To cordinate action, an Ark Class Action can be contacted through arkmarazion@gmail.com. In 2010 a group of investors got together and purchased a plot of land in Larnaca, Cyprus for 1 million pounds with the intention to try to turn it into a golf course. When they found they needed more land and more money, they consulted a group of “experts” who came up with the idea of attracting investment by starting a pension scheme. Now, pensions are supposed to be LOW RISK. And diverse. Speculative land development projects are NOT a good idea for a pension (due to being high risk). Financial advisers are expected to know this and are not supposed to advise their clients to put their hardearned pensions into a scheme based on a potentially worthless piece of land. OFFICIAL TIME-LINE 2010: Ark was formed by a group of “experts” and the worthless piece of land originally bought for 1 million was sold to Ark for 4 million. August 2010: Ark’s “Master Pension Schemes” (MPSs) were aggressively promoted and sold by a clutch of financial advisers in Spain and the UK using pension liberation (also known as pension cracking or unlocking) in a scheme described by the promoters as “not traditionally available” (in other words unlawful). This “unique” process was called Maximising Pension Value Arrangements (MPVA) and facilitated a loan to the participant of up to 50% of the value of the transferred pension (after deduction of fees which ranged from between 5% and 15%). 2010 to 2011: The Ark schemes began advertising and were sold through newspaper ads, websites, calls from financial advisers, seminars and advertisements posted on toilet doors. May 2011: The Pensions Regulator were actively shutting down pension

liberation scams such as Ark and placed the six Ark schemes in the hands of Dalriada Trustees and the whole lot was suspended. The Regulator was actively promoting its “Scorpion” campaign to warn people about the dangers of pension liberation fraud. HMRC also set up “Project Bloom” to help stop these scams due to the fact that the victims stood to lose their pensions AND get 55% plus tax bills on their pension loans. see www.hmrc.gov.uk/pensionschemes/liber ationud.pdf Justice Bean ruled in the High Court that the Ark schemes (MPSs and MPVAs i.e. pension transfers and reciprocal loans) were a “fraud on the power of investment” and that the loans constituted “unauthorised payments” (i.e. taxable at 55%). The ruling can be read here – note Clause 57: www.professionalpensions.com/digital _assets/3826/4568_001.pdf In December 1st 2011: Evergreen Pension Scheme was established in New Zealand. On December 20th 2011: Marazion was incorporated in Nicosia, Cyprus. In June 2012 Evergreen Pension Scheme commenced trading – making a loss in the first year and attracting 426 members In August 2012 Marazion started selling five-year term loans and corresponding five-year “lock ins” to Evergreen pension transfers. In 19th November 2012 HMRC suspended Evergreen from their QROPS list www.evergreentrust.co.nz/ukpension-transfers

In December 2012 Dalriada published the first year’s audited accounts (for the period May 2011 to May 2012) for the six MPSs: Cranbourne Star, Tallton Place, Grosvenor, Lancaster, Portman and Woodcroft Dalriada’s audited accounts for the six Ark schemes for the first two years can be found here: http://dalriadatrustees.co.uk/ark In September 2013: The Ark Class Action was set up to help inform the Ark victims and negotiate and appeal their tax liabilities so that these (together with their pension losses) can be reclaimed from the negligent financial advisers who sold the Ark schemes to the victims. In March 2014: HMRC finally agreed to confirm their full intentions regarding taxing the Ark loans.

July/August 2014, Nº 15 Page 21

Moving to April 2014: HMRC finally confirmed their intention to try to tax the loans at both ends i.e. 55% at the receiving end AND 55% at the making end. They also confirmed that Ark members who did not receive a loan would still be taxed at 55% for intending to make a loan, and/or intending to receive a loan. Between 2012 and 2014 (to date), some Ark members have received demands by HMRC to complete Self Assessment returns declaring the Ark unauthorized payments for tax purposes; some members have received demands for the tax; some have received nothing at all, but HMRC have confirmed that the letters and demands are now on their way. There really has been no consistency in the HMRC approach to the whole Ark matter, but they do now appear to be getting their act together. June 2014: Evidence regarding the Marazion/Evergreen pension liberation fraud was handed to the British authorities in London. June 2014: HMRC has issued a deadline of 30th of June for return of the 10 point questionnaire required in respect of the Ark loans. The EGMs sare scheduled on 22nd and 24th July in Javea. Only those who have notified themselves as victims can attend the meetings, but after the EGM has closed the Press - and others present - may have the opportunity to seek answers to their questions.

IT´S ALL GONE QUIET AT JÁVEA TOWNHALL

As a community publication Jávea Jeard has always made this page (or those nearby) available to Jávea Townhall so Councillors have the opportunity to put their point of view. Contributions were expected this month from our long-standing friend Doris Courselles (who may be on holiday) and Oscar Anton who authorised support for XD, but when it was received, it referred to the Public Participation exercise for the General Plan, and was so long and boring that it would have filled our 28 pages, with no room for photos or advertisements. We’d be equally happy to hear from Alcalde José Chulvi and include his commrnts, but his Press Officer puts his point of view many times - most days.

GAS CHEATS ARE AGAIN AFTER YOUR MONEY

Page 22

July/August 2014, Nº 15

Reports of bogus Gas Inspectors in Jávea have increased. Not only are they arriving unexpectedly at private properties, they sometimes ring in advance to arrange an appointment in order to allay suspicion. If you have any doubts at all, please contact your official gas provider. Here is a typical example of what can occur. "Yesterday I received a telephone call from an "engineer" saying our gas installation needed its 5 Year check. He gave our name and address although I should have twigged that the name was the one shown in the Phone Book. I arranged for them to come at 3pm. Before this, we phoned the gas company who said they knew nothing about it and they wouldn't phone in the morning for an afternoon appointment! Two men arrived at 4.30 but we were ready for them. I took a photo of them plus their "unmarked" car. They were told to go away! One of the men didn't say a word and the other was getting quite abusive. We immediately went to the Police Station and showed them the photos. They explained that they were not "illegal" but could come to your house, look at the gas tank, then charge you an extortionate amount of money for repairs!!!! The police said we are under NO obligation to allow anyone into our property. Looks as if the onus is on the unsuspecting client......... They took down the details so we don't know if they will contact the owner of the car. The ‘Approval Certificate’ lasts for 5 years and thousands of ‘inspectors’ have been verified by the Ministry. They are NOT illegal - they live by their wits! mThese are men employed by companies who pay them no ‘salary’ and who relied on ‘what they could fiddle’ to feed their families and pay their expenses of rent and fuel to drive to the next ‘suspect’.

José Chulvi tells you how to vote

The next local (municipal) elections will take place in May next year, 2015. It’s very heartening to hear that so many of our foreign residents are now taking an interest in this, and want a ‘voice’ in how our beautiful home town is run. All residents of Jávea, whatever their nationality and over 18 years of age are entitled to vote in the local elections for the town. First you have to be registered on the ‘padrón’ and then register separately to go on the list of voters. If you aren’t yet registered on the padrón, you need to do so by visiting the ‘Portal del Clot’, Avda. Amanacer, 2. in the town. Take your passport or your national ID card and your escritura (property ownership papers) or rental contract. It’s always a good idea to take photocopies too. If you have an informal agreement for your address, for instance

Jávea Jeard

if you are staying with family or friends and don’t have a rental contract, the person you are staying with can sign a form to say that you are living at that address. While you are there, tell them that you also wish to register to vote, and you will be given a form to fill in and sign (they’ll help you at the Help Desk if you don’t read Spanish) - and you’re registered! You will receive a card in the post just before the elections, so if you move, be sure to return to update your address. You can choose to vote in just the local elections, in the EU elections, or in both. If you’re already on the padrón, but not registered to vote, visit the office with your photo ID/passport and ask to register to vote. If you’re not sure if you are registered to vote you can visit the office to ask. To ensure your vote in the local elections next year, please do this as soon as possible and before the lists close at the end of 2014.

Casa Segura Locksmiths

This is a favourite time of year for the ‘walk in thief’ who sees that everyone is enjoying themselves by the pool whilst the front door is open with the usual array of wallets, bags, car keys etc on the hall table just waiting to be picked up and it only takes a second and no noise. Please make a habit of locking the front gate and the front door when you are at the rear or side of the house or for that matter in the house full stop. A favourite ploy of thieves is to grab a pile of leaflets from a shop and pretend they are advertising distributors which gives them cover for entering properties that don’t have a secure boundary and stealing the handbag off the hall table etc.

Are you ready for More HUMOUR?

ATTRIBUTED TO BILL GATES- BUT WHO CARES?

Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about eleven things they did not and will not learn in school. He talked about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1: Life is not fair - get used to it! Rule 2: The world doesn't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself. Rule 3: You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both. Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss. Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: They called it opportunity. Rule 6: If you mess up, it's not your parents' fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them. Rule 7: Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were: So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parents generation, try delousing the closet in your own room. Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. *This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life. Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. (Do that on your own time). Rule 10: Television is NOT real life. In real life, people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs. Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one. If you can read this...thank a Teacher. If you can read this in English...thank a Soldier! And for life and everything else you have...thank your God!

Prison Joke Book Jávea Jeard

It was Mickey's first night in prison. All of the inmates were in their cells and he was trying to become a bit more comfortable with his meager surroundings. As he leaned against the bars at the front of his cell, Mickey heard a voice call out "44" and the whole cell block erupted into laughter! Another voice called "16" and again there was laughter. A third voice called "62" which was followed by laughter throughout the block. Mickey didn't know what was going on so he rapped on his cell wall. "Yeah, whaddaya want?" came the gruff reply from next door. "What's going on, here?" asked Mickey. "Well," said the other inmate, "down in the prison library there's only one joke book. We've all read the book so many times that we don't waste time telling the joke, we just call out its number." So the next day Mickey went down to the library and, sure enough, found the yellowed, dog-eared joke book and read it from cover to cover. That night, wanting to be part of the group, Mickey confidently called out "44" and everyone laughed! He tried calling "16" and "62" and again there were peals of laughter. Then he called 57, and the halls rang with laughter. After several minutes, one prisoner was still rolling on the floor laughing. More minutes - still laughing. Mickey rapped on the cell wall. "Yeah, waddaya want?" asked the other inmate. "I don't understand it," asked Mickey, "Why is Tommy STILL laughing?" "Well," said the gruff inmate, "He'd never heard that one before!"

Jávea Jeard Woman to Woman

Continued from page 20 playing in the fields and on the swings in the park. One of my friends lived in a converted windmill. I never did get to see the inside of it, but understand that there were sixteen children in total!

Nana had a daughter that lived on the outskirts of Wrexham. Auntie Ivy ran a country club and when she went on holiday with my Uncle, she would ask Nana and I to go and stay at the club while she was away, with the help of Clive, their son, my twenty year old cousin. I loved those times staying in the huge luxurious house surrounded by acres of grounds. There were so many rooms and such a lot of brass ornaments everywhere. Once a week all the brass and silver ornaments were cleaned and when Nana and I were staying there, the task fell to us. But it was the evenings I loved most. The customers would come into the taproom for a drink and during the evening I would collect the empties and wash them, ready to be refilled. I watched as Clive pulled a pint from the tank and begged him to teach me how to do it. Always in for a laugh, he agreed and soon I was pulling pints like a professional. I don't know what would

have happened if the police had called unexpectedly and found a thirteen year old pulling pints.

There was a football table in one of the corners and Clive and I would play on the table for ages, until we got bored. Normally, the game is over when the football goes into one of the goals, but Clive would stuff rags into each of the goals so we never lost our ball!

July/August 2014, Nº 15

I was always sad when my holiday with Nana was over and I had to return home. I was quite happy to travel back on my own, after kissing my Nana goodbye and promising to come back again next year. It is unthinkable that it could happen today, but back in those days we always felt safe around adults. My Nana was always reluctant to put me on the train for home and once she asked me if I would consider her asking my family if I could stay in Rhostyllen with her instead of returning home. I think she was a very lonely person and loved having me stay with her and the thought of being on her own again, was not one she was looking forward to. I loved my Nana so much but I loved my own Mum and Dad too and the thought of not going home to them and my sisters and brother was not an option.

Page 25

Memory is a funny thing. I always remember summer holidays from school being long, sunny, hardly any rain, when in actual fact it was probably very different. These days many children will be taken on exotic holidays abroad but I wouldn't swop them for the holidays of my childhood, they were unpredictable, basic but oh, such happy days.

How can you tell when you are in a changing room, restroom, hotel etc. with a mirror or a 2-way glass?

Here's how: I thought it was quite interesting! And I know in about 30 seconds you're going to do what I did and find the nearest mirror. Do you know how to determine if a mirror is 2-way or not? A policewoman who travels all over the world givins seminars and techniques for businesswomen passed this on. When we visit toilets, bathrooms, hotel rooms, changing rooms, etc., how many of you know for sure that the seemingly ordinary mirror hanging on the wall is a real mirror, or actually a 2-way mirror (i.e., they can see you, but you can't see them?) There have been many cases of people installing 2-way mirrors in female changing rooms. It is very difficult to positively identify the surface by looking at it. So, how do we determine with any amount of certainty what type of mirror is reflecting back at us?

TWO WAY GLASS MIRROR IMAGE

Just conduct this simple test: Place the tip of your fingernail against the reflective surface and if there is a GAP between your fingernail and the image of the nail, then it is GENUINE mirror. However, if your fingernail DIRECTLY TOUCHES the image of your nail, then BEWARE! IT IS A 2-WAY MIRROR! "No Space, Leave the Place". So remember, every time you see a mirror, do the "fingernail test." It doesn't cost you anything. REMEMBER. No Space, Leave the Place:. from Eileen Oxley

For those who do not listen to the 'Today' programme on Radio 4, this is English humour at its best. Right at the end of a programme recently, there was a discussion about the obscene cost of entry into Premiership football games, the cheapest price of £60 and £100 per game is not uncommon. An older chap being interviewed said he could recall many years ago arriving at the turnstiles (it was probably West Ham United): "That will be ten quid, mate." "What?!" the old chap said "I could get a woman for that!" The man on the turnstile retorted, "Not for 45 minutes each way with a brass band and a meat pie in the interval, you wouldn't!" from Lesley Myer

There are occasions when Scallops are willing to ‘contra’ the FREE bottle of wine with chosen meals, but you MUST say you DO NOT WANT the wine when you order your meals. We ate with a family on a limited budget, who were surprised by the 20€ unexpected drinks bill, and 6 bottles of wine they did not order. Everyone was happy with the deal in the end. Sadly, the 1/2 price Pepsi is not on offer every day, you need to ask or look at the offers.

If you have Scallops vouchers you are unable to use, you can leave them in the box outside the OASIS CENTRE (in C/. Toni Llido, at the rear of La Caixa bank) and we will see that their value is not wasted. It costs you nothing to give away what you cannot use.

PHENOMENAL 2 LETTER WORD

Jávea Jeard

I'm sure you will enjoy this. I never knew one word in English language that can be a noun, verb, adj, adv, prep. UP Read until the end ... You'll laugh. This two-letter word in English has more meanings than any other twoletter word, and that word is UP.' It is listed in the dictionary as an [adv], [prep], [adj], [n] or [v]. It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP, why are the officers UP for election (if there is a tie, it is a toss UP) and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report? We call UP our friends, brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and fix UP the old car. At other times, this little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing but to be dressed UP is special. And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is blocked UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night. We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look UP the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4 of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with (UP to) a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP. When the sun comes out, we say it is clearing UP. When it rains, it soaks UP the earth. When it does not rain for a while, things dry UP. One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now . . . My time is UP! Oh . . . One more thing: What is the first thing you do in the morning and the last thing you do at night? U P! Did that one crack you UP? Now I'll shut UP! from Peter Sharp

DEMOCRACY and RACISM EXPLAINED

A Muslim ‘illegal’ asks his mother, "Mama, what is Democracy and what is Racism?"

"Well son, Democracy is when British tax payers work really hard every day and pay their taxes so that we can get all our benefits! “You know, like our free housing, free healthcare, free education, bigger welfare payments than pensioners, and so on and so on. “You should know by now, that's called Democracy". "But mama, don't the British tax payers get really annoyed about that?" "Sure they do my son, and that's called Racism !" (Never more simply explained). from Ian Thomas
