Well-known and respected API Estate Agent, Belen Quiroga, the 4th candidate in the Neuva Jávea list at the last Municipal Election, is expected to be swarn-in as a replacement Councillor at the end of March.
Councillors in Spain are elected by proportional representation - the party gaining 40% of the votes - is rewarded with 40% of Jávea’s 21 seats. If that represents 7 seats (for example) the top 7 names on the list of 21 are elected. If any of those 7 should resign or be deemed unfit to be a Councillor - as happened with Francisco Catala Perez, who had a fight with municipal police on the Arenal - they are replaced by the next (unsuccessful) name from their list of candidates. The current drama is even more complicated, because NUEVA JÁVEA founder Ana Angelica Borda Vasbinder, was 3rd on the list, and entitled to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Catala, she decided to ‘waive’ her right to fill the vacancy, paving the way for Nº 4 to

serve. All Councillors can claim reimbursement for attending Council meetings, but it is generally only those IN government, rather than in OPPOSITION who receive a full-time or part-time salary. A Councillor can pursue a profession and is expected to declare any conflict of interest. The publishers of Jávea Jeard have twice dealt with Belen when ‘renting’ property and have found her (unusally) trustworthy and honourable. She even returned the deposit we’d made when we changed our mind. CR

Jávea Townhall February meeting

I’d been hospitalised for 9 days, unable to walk without help, and had only been home for a few hours, when Jávea Councillors met to take their decisions that would govern our Town. Kacey was present and gave me the notes she made.
I assume there was a vacant chair - nearest the door - to the Town Hall vestible and steps from Plaza Iglesias, as Independent and former Nueva Jávea Councillor Paco Catala had resigned since the previous monthly meeting. At the January meeting, the question was put: “If Paco Catala has received a 12 month (non custodial) prison sentence for struggling on the Arenal with Muncipal Police Officers who were trying to remove an open beer bottle from his hand (in a struggle during which Paco’s shoulder blade was broken) how is he able to sit here as a Councillor and example to our people?” Paco’s reply was simple: “The written Sentence did not mention whether or not I was banned from public service.” There were mumblings about what a ‘man of honour’ would do, so Mayor José Chulvi asked the new Town Hall Secretary to make enquiries. Within 76 hours, an Extraordinary Meeting of Councillors was convened, at which Paco Catala resigned. In such circumstances there is a well-worn procedure. At the most recent Municipal election a number of prominent people offered themselves as Candidates of the Nuevo Jávea Party, but as Oscar Anton was accused of meeting with Partida Popular representatives, Oscar was expelled from NJ and became the charismatic leader of Xabia Democratica. Ana Vasbinder was a founder of Nueva Jávea, making friends with the extranjeros but enemies among the locals, who expresssed the view that even IF Jávea was ready for an Alcaldesa (lady Mayor) - it certainly wouldn’t be a nonSpaniard. When the list of candidates was published, Juan Planalles Alvarez was at the top, followed by Paco Catala Perez, with Ana
Angelica Borda Vasbinder in 3rd place, and Maria Belen Quiroga Biedma in 4th. As further proof of unrest in Nueva Jávea, both Juan Planelles and Paco Catala, announced their resignation from NJ, but decided to remain ‘unaligned’ and not join any of the other polital groups. As soon as there was ‘talk’ of the possibility of Paco Catala being disqualified as a Councillor, Ana Vasbinder announced that she would NOT return to politics in Javea, but would concentrate on Managing Clinica Asistel on the road between Benitachell and Moraira.
Point 1 Councillors unanimously approved the decisions taken by the Mayor’s office since 28th January, 2014.
Point 2 Invoices approved by the Governing Committee were passed for payment.
Point 3 This motion objected to the fact that the Valencian Regional Government was usurping the authority of Jávea Town and Councillors to make their own automous decisions where the Law authorised them to do so, and defended the right of Jávea to make its own decisions. Toni Sebastia (PP) said she would abstain from voting as there had been insufficient time to study the proposals. Oscar Anton said ‘The State’ was removing the right of Jávea to decide its own future. Each municipality had the right to establish their own level of local taxation and any loss of that right must be fought. The motion was approved although PP abstained.
Point 4 was approved but it was unclear - so little information is divulged whether it referred to a
change in the number of local municipal police (more Chiefs and fewer Indians) or whether it authorised moving the Municipal Police from Plaza de Constitucion to the vacant building above CLOT parking.
Point 5 Invoices submitted under reference F/2014/14 totalling 17.838€ were approved for payment.
Point 6 Invoices submitted under reference F/2014/7 totalling 60.745€ were approved for payment.
Point 7 Invoices submitted under reference F/2014/9 totalling 11.653€ were approved for payment.

Point 11 Councillors agreed to reimburse Tomas Montesinos Aracil and Carmen Barrachina Mtaix in respect of taxes that were overpaid, but a) the amount owed will be recalculated, and b) they must prove they have paid the €19.473 that is disputed.

‘Sleeping Policemen’ lowered in Avenida Palmela
At the beginning of last month technicians lowered the height of the ‘sleeping policemen’ on the entry road into Jávea, between the Repsol fuel station and Dia-Lidl. You can drive from Valencia or Alicante airports and never meet one of these curved section of concrete intended to reduce speed, but Jávea is littered with them. been assigned to a low-income family; in any case, all these homes end up being occupied illegally by squatters, known in Spain as okupas. But now, squatters are not just those who pull down a door and move in by themselves. Instead, organized gangs in Madrid are taking over these vacant properties first, and offering to either sell or rent them to would-be squatters. "Purchasing" one of these apartments costs anywhere between 1,000 and 2,000 €uros, while renting is more expensive in the long run, since the gangs ask for 200 to 400 euros a month.
New Elelectricity bill structure criticised
New electricity bill structure 'penalises energy saving' and increases costs for low-use households Consumer protection groups have criticised the government's new electricity billing structure as it 'penalises' those who use the least power and does not provide any incentive to save on energy consumption. A year ago, the 'fixed' part of a household bill accounted for 35 per cent and the variable part, relating to consumption, was 65 per cent, but this was changed last July with a gradual move towards the standing charge taking up a higher percentage of what is paid by residential homes. Now that this gradual migration has finished, from this week onwards, the fixed charge will be 60 per cent of the bill and the variable consumptionrelated part 40 per cent.

According to the Spanish Met office, accumulated rainfall between September 1 and January 31 in recent years was between 160 and 280 mms, while this season it was between 16 to 59 mms, representing a decrease of between 64 and 94%. The unusually high temperatures during this period have not helped. January, for example, was the warmest in 48 years, and recorded 70% less rain than normal. The coast has seen no more than 5mm.
Charity shop gets credit for refurbishing centre for the disabled
The Charity Shop Library - which is made up mostly of British residents received credit in the regional Spanish press for its work and financial support in a major refurbishing of the headquarters of TAPIS in Xàbia. TAPIS is an occupational workshop to promote rehabilitation and integration of the mentally disabled so as to improve their independence. Mayor Chulvi and councillors were at the opening ceremony of the new premises to give their formal thanks to the charity.

And the 76year-old said: “Most of the traces of the past have disappeared in the old town of Javea, but in the book the past comes to life again with the town history and offers the reader an exciting journey through fascinating times.”
Jávea’s petition against oil exploration in the Gulf of Valencia (between here and the Balearics) was available for signing in the Tourist offices
Here is some background : In 2011, Cairn, a Scottish oil and gas exploration company, obtained licenses from the Spanish government to drill for oil off the Eastern coast of Spain at Cabo de la Nao which lies between the Gulf of Valencia and the island of Ibiza. The licenses allow the company to operate drilling rigs and oil platforms in its search for oil and it is currently awaiting the go ahead from the Spanish government to commence its initial exploration. As that moment draws closer environmental organisations such as Oceana which in the last two years have carried out ecological studies of the area, warn of serious potential environmental impact from the seismic surveys and drilling. Its view is that many protected areas and nearly 200 species could be affected if the company is given the green light. ... not to mention the impacts on tourism...
Jávea’s municipal bus service re-routed
The bus service between the old town and Toscamar is to be re-routed to incorporate two new stops in the Carretera Cabo de la Nao (also known as Avenida del Pla) to offer a better service through the Arenal area of town. Councillor Tere Bisquert (Transportation) explained that a small loop will be included in the 'PuebloToscamar' route, with the bus from the Port turning right on to Av. Fontana, and left on to the Carta. Cabo de la Nao, where a new ‘Bus Stop’ will be created outside the Tourism Office, with another ‘stop’ at Mas y Mas supermarket, before the bus turns left at Barclays roundabout, and continuing down to the sea-front on its journey to Toscamar. The slight detour will help residents in the Javea Park, L'Arenal, Plaza and Urbatenis urbanisations and help shoppers.
Do your Townhall admin in the Tourism Offices It was 11 years ago (long before the ‘Help Desk’) after Juan Moragues was elected Mayor, that I suggested the Tourism Offices be authorised to accept requests from citizens to the Townhall, as every service seemed to be provided from a different street, wasting hours upon hours of time and temper. The project required Tourism Office staff to undertake any translation that was needed, receiving the paperwork, and giving the applicant an idea as to how long a reply would take. The applicant would be given a date to return and, if there was a delay, the Tourism Office contact would phone them. Councillor Amanda Dean was instructed to request an appraisal by a consultant in Barcelona, who told her “I’ve seen staff in Jávea Townhall doing things the way that I’ve not seen staff anywhere else in Spain doing for more than 30 years!” Nothing else was heard of the idea. Jávea Townhall has - 11 years later signed an agreement with the European Foundation for the Information Society, whereby each of the three Tourist Information offices and the Citizens Advice Office (OAC) will have computer terminals from which most processes with the administration can be carried out. "It will be a very useful resource especially for those who have secondary homes in Jávea, as the service will also funcion at weekends, when the municipal offices are closed. Citizens will now be able to process transactions through the tourist offices which are open 363 days a year," commented Cesc Camprubi the councillor for New Technologies. It will also be useful "for those who go to the OAC and wish to avoid queuing," added the Mayor. Camprubi mentioned that Jávea, along with the city of Valencia, will be pioneers in the Province of Valencia with this electronic equipment enabling access for all registration services. Quite a few scary editorials were carried in the local English newspapers, but the writers never made plain which regions they were speaking of!
Spain is a large Country and we now know our Southern cousins have not been as fortunate as us living in Eastern Spain (Costa Blanca). I have been told that even 2.4 metre satellite dishes are failing?
My Colleagues Peter, Geoff, Paco and I along with several other interested parties have been checking out in the area we cover, stretching from Gandia, Oliva, Denia, Jávea, Calpe, Altea and Benidorm.
We are pleased to report that in all these areas and cutting into the inland area as well, we have been able to obtain very good results on both Astra/SES 2E and 2F using quality 1.1 metre satellite dishes along with top performing L.N.Bs and again good quality coaxial cable downleads, obtaining the most popular U.K. Channels: BBC, ITV, Channel 4, 5, Sky News and quite a few other Free-to-air programmes including those also offering H.D!
It’s wise to mention that this size of satellite dish (1.1 metre) is limited in its reception capabilities and I consider it to be the minimum size, this has to be the most economical route to take costing only 199 Euros while if a satellite receiver is also required then it’s still only 375 Euros, quite a bargain, once installed, you have ‘NO’ monthly charges.
We always complete our installations with great care and find that using the facilities of our Promax test equipment which offers tests that enable us to read off the ‘bit-error’ of the signals at selected frequencies along with the spectrum analyser ensure quality reception right across the band.
Having proved that it’s quite possible to produce excellent results down the mentioned area of the Costa Blanca both in standard and high definition
(H.D.) every area offers slightly different results.
It is best to discuss the margin left when considering an installation, although we usually enjoy some 320 days of sunshine and clear skies in most years. When we do suffer a downfall of heavy rain it will attenuate the signal and can result in a complete wipe out of signals on occasions.
Whilst we cannot offer a complete cure it’s best to point out that if you decide upon a larger satellite dish, your chances of viewing during poor weather are greatly improved, although if the rain becomes quite violent then even the 2.4 metre Satellite Dishes suffer some loss of signal. It must also be taken into consideration that Astra/SES within the next two to three months intend to launch ‘2G’ and again no one can predict exactly its signal strength, however we do expect it to be quite similar to 2E/F!
Astra/SES 2G will cover the balance of programmes not covered by 2E/F, at this point it can be somewhat confusing as Sky comes into this conundrum. ITV2H.D. ITV3HD. ITV4 H.D. and Five H.D. are only available with a ‘Sky’ subscription and of course those interested in the Sky product range (films, sport, documentaries etc) must decide which of the Sky packages to select, this can usually be arranged if required.
Because of the demise of 2D, owing to age, a quick fix had to be found and this was provided by slotting in on a temporary basis Astra/SES 1N (this was designed for Astra/SES 19.2 degrees) resulting in a much expanded footprint with an increased power level. The result of this has been that much smaller satellite dishes could be used in the Costa Blanca area with greatly improved results.
As reported in earlier additions we have now moved on to Astra/SES 2F since 1st of February of this year Astra/SES 2E was launched, however it has been noted that 2E is slightly lower in power and since February we have had many calls that have resulted in a re-alignment to produce the maximum performance, but in some cases upgrading the LNB has been necessary, resulting in a marked improvement of performance.

I feel it only fair to draw a client’s attention that when considering a 1.1 or indeed a 1.4 metre satellite dish, we accept that in view of the present economic situation the cost is a very important factor.
When compared with the IPTV systems at several hundred Euros per year, every year, then having your own system which we now know according to Astra/SES will be good for at least 12 years - possibly longer - there is a very good case for purchasing your own system and in the long run saving a lot of money! Have a look at the IPTV websites and do the numbers!
To the best of my knowledge most of the IPTV systems do not cover the Sky offerings and I have also received a continual list of people who are using the IPTV system and finding from time to time they suffer from pixilation, signals turning negative and various other indications of poor performance. This is usually traced to the fact that the telephone line is unable to constantly supply the required bandwidth performance of some 2 to 3 Mb that is required, depending on the make of equipment. At the moment this places the suppliers of these IPTV systems in a very difficult position. Only the other day a lady who was extremely dissatisfied with the performance and complained bitterly, was now having problems in re-claiming the advance deposit she had made!
I have tested my own telephone line (try http://www.speedtest.net for an independent evaluation) performance and while sometimes it just makes the required claim of 3 Mb, most of the time it drops off considerably. Bearing this in mind I feel that this system is one for the future, rather than for NOW.
In the U.K. where speed and therefore performance is much greater, I feel in view of the present Spanish economy, it will be sometime before Telefonica catches up with B.T. and we have a more level playing field.

Marina Alta flatly rejects oil exploration project
Townhalls from across the Marina Alta have rejected the environment impact statement for the proposed exploration for oil in the Gulf of Valencia. Jávea has joined voices with Denia, Ondara, Teulada, Benissa, La Xara and Jesús Pobre. In addition Cedma - a business federation which represents some 1300 businesses accross the Marina Alta has lodged a petition with the EU parliament asking for the administrative procedures for the project approval to be suspended and oblige the company to seek the approval of the EU.
Denia promotes value of its marine environment
The best way to protect a marine ecosystem is to make it well known. Denia Town Hall together with the departments of fisheries and the environment is launching a series of initiatives to publicise the richness of Denia's marine environment. There will be a brochure, showing the species of whale, dolphin and sea turtle most commonly seen in the area, and asking the public to get involved in reporting sightings of these creatures; interested people can also sign up to be marine environmental volunteers, learning about the different sea animals and birds, and different fishing methods used, their instruction including guided trips out to sea. They are also setting up a whale and bird-watching observatory near the restaurant Mena at la Rotas.
Iberdrola to cut investment in Spain in wake of energy sector reforms
The chairman of Spanish power utility Iberdrola, Ignacio Sánchez Galán, has lashed out at the government’s energy policy and announced that his company “will make a testimonial reduction in its investments in Spain in the period 20142015” and not invest any more in developing its domestic renewables business, at least until 2016. Galán said during the three-year period Iberdrola planned to invest 9.6 billion €uros, but will concentrate its efforts on Britain, the United States, Mexico and Brazil. Investment in Spain will be reduced to 15 percent of the total. “Iberdrola feels more British, Mexican and American than Spanish,” he said.

Letting polluters off the hook
Potentially contaminating businesses will be forced to take out insurance to cover clean-up costs, but a new reform will let 98 percent of firms opt out. They called it "green insurance", and it was one of the most ambitious environmental laws passed by the previous Socialist administration. In 2007, tens of thousands of potentially contaminating businesses were forced to take out guarantees to cover the clean-up costs of any accident that might result from their activities. Essentially, it was about putting into practice the "polluter pays" principle… The fact is, the 2007 legislation was so ambitious that the financial guarantees were never effectively implemented, bogged down as they were by regulatory development…Environment Ministry claims that it has exempted businesses "with a low potential for generating environmental damage and with a low accident rate." and …nearly 315,000 companies have been left out of the green insurance requirement. Report reviews impact of oil and gas drilling activities on EU fisheries
According to a report by Dr David Green and Dr Cristina Gomez of the University of Aberdeen’s Institute for Coastal Science and Management (AICSM) “We currently do not know enough about the spread and persistence of oil pollution and chemicals in the environment or on fisheries and we need to know more about where the oil ends up, how toxic it is, and how long it will affect different fish species. They suggest the effects could remain in the ecosystem much longer than we think, in the food chain, and we need to know more. “There are still many gaps in the scientific understanding that require more funding and more studies.” Dr
Green added: “The impact of any major incident goes beyond the environmental fallout. After the Braer tanker spill off Shetland in 1993, there was a direct and sustained negative effect on local fisheries. “In many European countries— such as Italy, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands (and to a lesser extent the UK)—where fish consumption is high— there is growing concern about what impact oil and gas drilling may have on fishery resources - not to mention the effects on tourism and the economies of these areas.”

Residents and politicians are alarmed at plans to drill in the Mediterranean “Spain's determination to explore for hydrocarbons in the Mediterranean is completely out of kilter with European environmental policy, and turns a blind eye to all the evidence about the impact of climate change," says Ricardo Aguilar of environmental NGO Oceana. "Fortunately, the government still has time to turn down applications to explore in Spanish waters…The oil companies involved in the exploration say that opposition to their plans to drill for hydrocarbons beneath the seabed is based on "a profound lack of understanding" of the techniques involved.”

Tariff deficit exceeded four billion euros in 2013
The government was hoping that 2013 would bring an end to the tariff deficit – the difference between the cost of producing electricity and what Spanish consumers are actually charged for it. According to figures released recently , the amount actually grew to more than four billion euros by December. EU statistics office also shows that Spain produced eight percent of the EU's total energy, and that its dependence rate – the extent to which a country is dependent on energy imports – was 73 percent in 2012, surpassed only by Italy at 81 percent.
Winter of 2014 marked by abrupt temperature swings
Since late December, winter in the Comunidad Valenciana has been marked by abrupt temperature swings e.g. the 11th of Feb saw a maximum of 11 degrees in Valencia, then three days later it was up to 26. There have been four major swings, and an unusually warm night on 14th, where night-time temperatures hovered just below 18 degrees. This has been ascribed to the effects of the westerly winds, warm air pushing and alternating with colder air
masses. This has also generated high winds. Despite the fluctuations, the temperatures have been higher than usual. This is probably another consequence of the jet stream anomaly which has caused freezing conditions in N.America, storms in northern Europe and spectacular flooding in UK.

The new bill states that in any accident in which a driver hits a game animal, "the driver of the vehicle will be responsible for any damage to people or goods," although this does not extend to paying for any dead animal. Until now, drivers were only considered responsible for an accident involving game if they had violated driving regulations. Spain has 24,677 private game preserves, according to the latest figures released by the Agriculture, Food and Environment Ministry. But these numbers do not include the regions of Extremadura, Galicia or Aragón, which means that the real number is actually much higher.

what “might be the result of the Generalitat cutting back on schooling for 3-year-olds, it was better to wait until after the registration period had closed, and then ask ‘what are you going to do about the consequences of the decision you made?’ She predicted that there would be a shortage of places for the new school year. It was unclear whether or not the Townhall will appeal against the resolution to close one of the classes. Jose Luis (PP) said the decision was ‘academic’ because no written notification had been received from Valencia. The Motion was approved, but PP abstained.
Josefa Chorro (Compromis) expressed concern that the landscape of Jávea was continuing to change, not so much from fires and construction, but now from the sea with the prospect of drilling just around the Cabo San Antonio. Fishing stock would be depleted and the Jávea fishing fleet would be among those who were badly affected. Fish and seacreatures would migrate - and perhaps, who knows - never return. No one looks for disaster, but accidents like BP or Mexico 2010, would eradicate our fish reserves. Jose Luis (PP) said his Councillors were totally against environmental destruction, but there was no “quick fix” solution as a Licence was granted in 2010. There is a budgetd need for 60.000€ and whilst everyone might want to see the building ‘saved’ and ‘restored’ the question has to be answered “How can it be restored and what use will it have?” An ancient drawing has been found and several other items are being evaluated.
Madrid’s Archaelogical Museum have a historic artifact from Jávea which was not on display in a recent exhibition. It was agreed that the Museum be asked to return it to Jávea if they were not going themselves - to display it. CR

Very recently I had reason to visit the old CAM bank in Jávea, Crta. Cabo la Nao. The old CAM now rejoices under the name of Banco Sabadell. I accompanied a friend who has been a CAM current account customer for the last 14 years. Last year she sold her apartment in Jávea and decided to also open a deposit account with CAM Sabadell. On December 12th last year the deposit account time period expired so she decided to renew the agreement for a further year with Sabadell if they could offer her a competitive interest on her savings. The interest offer they made was very low so she decided to go along the road to Banca March to see if they could improve on the Sabadell offer. Banca March made a better offer, so my friend decided to move her deposit to Banca March. We retumed to Sabadell and asked them to pay the deposit account money into her current account on the 12th December, when the deposit expired. My friend also told Sabadell that she would be transferring her deposit money to another bank as they had made her a better interest offer. She did however wish to continue with her Sabadell current account as she has direct debits etc. coming out of it. She also pays regular bank charges on her current account. Oh dear all was not well!! The Sabadell employee immediately accused me of “unfairly influencing my friend to change banks”. So it was all my fault!! At that moment my friend was also accused of not having made an appointment with anyone at the bank to discuss this matter of the deposit account. My friend pointed out that she had in fact sent an email 4 days previously requesting an appointment but had received no reply from the bank. On looking up the emails the employee had to agree that 4 days ago an email had been received, but as she told us “the bank receives a thousand emails a day, so how can we, the customers, ever expect the staff to answer all of them?”
We then had to listen to a long discourse from the employee on how wonderful the Sabadell is, when in fact, to cash a cheque at this branch one can often wait for an hour in the queue. The employee also told my friend that the Sabadell had paid interest on her deposit throughout the year. Oh lucky friend!! the agreed amount had actually been paid. The employee then disappeared for around twenty minutes, presumably to talk to the manager and returned with the news that if the deposit money was moved, Sabadell would also cancel my friend's current account as they considered that my friend “was only making use of the bank”. This must be first rate customer service Sabadell style — if you don't treat em nice you get the royal order of the boot! I was truly amazed - and old fashioned. It seems that respect for customers is not high on Sabadell's agenda. Come back CAM all is forgiven! Margaret Ash

The Loss never Lessens - we learn to Cope!

Some funerals are memorable, and often for the wrong reasons.
Recently Ann and I travelled to Finestrat to be at the funeral of Ruth Lock, the wife of Henry Lock, whose book ‘The A2Z of Settling on the Costa Blanca’ Ann and I published in 1989. Henry had worked with Per Svensson at the Institute of Foreign Property Owners in Calpe, and then founded Caring Together, that introduced the concept of ‘Palliative Care at home or in hospital’ to our regional hospitals, and then the rest of Spain. Through the generosity of Costa Blanca benefactors, they raised sufficient funds to pay for ‘carers’ to visit those who were classed as terminally ill. Their Assessment Manager - Alison - was funded by CT to visit without charge any family that asked, to evaluate whether all the Spanish benefits and services that were available, were being provided. It saddened me, that Ruth - who had been the support behind the ‘public face’ of Henry and all his ‘good works’ should only have ‘a couple of handfuls’ of people giving thanks for her life. One of those present was their local Pharmacist!
I’ve only been in hospital twice The first time was when I had a rectal cancer removed - and that’s a miracle in its own right - and on the way home I stopped at Jávea Crematorium to officiate at the ‘Thanksgiving’ Service for a young Dad, who had died before the hospital could diagnose what was wrong with him. After the service - I just ‘got on’ with life.
More recently I spent 9 days in the new La Jara regional hospital, whilst doctors carried out all manner of tests, yet never found the source of the infection they treated with massive amounts of antibiotics. After 9 days spent mostly lying on my back, in bed, I had no idea how frail I would feel when discharged. A week later, having only walked with the aid of a Zimmer frame, I faced the prospect of ‘four steps - up and down’ to officiate at the Thanksgiving Service for long-term Jávea resident Jean Plum. Jean and Les had relocated from Ossett and Horbury to Jávea in 1987. Ann and I met them when we had a table at the Thursday Jávea market, to promote Jávea Civic Society and Costa Blanca Community Evangelical Church. Serena also had a table next to us to

I Did it My Way sung by Frank Sinatra. Afterwards, guests were invited to share their memories at the home of Sue and Dave! (also known as Alan). Les is currently a resident at Bon Retir and plans to move to the home Jean and he had chosen for their final years in the UK. I was too weak to officiate other than from a wheelchair, but Ann read the 23rd Psalm and made the Prayer of Committal for Jean’s body to be cremated. Her soul had already passed to be in the presence of Christ, having made her peace with God a couple of days before her death, with Hospital Chaplain, Rev. Marcos Sanz of Jávea’s Spanish Evangelical Church. CR

Jean Plum promote her Animal Sanctuary, from whom Les and Jean obtained ‘Pedro’ their first ‘rescue dog’. Jean was born Jean Wichley, passed the 11-Plus which earned her the nickname ‘smarty pants’ as she joined Ossett Grammar School. She had an interest in every sport and knew more about sport than most men. Jean met Les, who played for Horbury Town, and they married 58 years ago. They were soon joined by two Siamese cats and donations were received for Jávea Feral Cat Association as mourners left the service. Jean was also a skilful Bridge player and both she and Les rolled for Benitachell Bowls Club. Before relocating to Spain they lived in Grigglestone where they met Sue and Alan (or was it Dave?) and all 4 chose Jávea for their retirement years. Jean was a celebrated cook, renowned for her ‘home made soups’ but would never divulge the recipe. Before her untimely death, Jean and Les were ‘reluctantly yet bravely’ facing the prospect of returning to Yorkshire and sheltered housing. It wasn’t something they wanted, and hoped it would never happen, but Jean’s death following a stroke, allowed her friends in Spain (and there was a good turnout) to say their ‘Goodbyes’ and I suggested - not that I knew - that the prospect of Jean and Les returning to the UK might well have been “over my dead body” and so it was, with Jean having the last word with her chosen piece of music:

With rules like that, foreigners often wonder how we ever managed to run an Empire or produce the Beatles; but of course it is for that very reason; the Chinese may be inscrutable, but even they are too innocent to make the most complicated verb in the language the first one that you learn. I refer of course to the verb to be, which unlike most verbs that have maybe five forms (eg: eat, eats, eaten, eating, ate) has eight (am, are, is, was, were, be, being, been).

Not many languages have a word that means 'impossible to explain in words', but that's what 'ineffable' means.
You might think that something that can be explained in words would therefore be 'effable', but you would be wrong, and you would share the experience of being wrong with those millions of lost souls who try to learn our language every year: being wrong most of the time.
Think about it (but do so at your peril); if a mature person is one who shows maturity, and a simple person is one who exudes simplicity, it would be logical to think that an adult is someone who demonstrates adultery, on a regular basis and at weekends too, but you would be wrong again, I hope.
One of my favourite English words is 'queue', and it is something I like to do in Kew. Queue is one of those rare words, with four pretty vowels all in a row. But if you take the four vowels away, it sounds exactly the same, whereas if you say the past of 'read', you get 'read', which sounds like 'red' even though it is spelt read. Try explaining that to a fee paying student as he asks for his money back.
Nevertheless, one of the best known quotes in the language, to be or not to be, is known to everybody, even though it is completely useless in any everyday situation unless you are contemplating killing an uncle. Bob Yareham has lived in Valencia since 1981 working as an English teacher and writer

SUNDAY MORNING NUMBERS INCREASE
Jávea Evangelical Church moved their Sunday morning service to the Oasis Help Centre (next to La Caixa bank) in Jávea Port, as an experiment for the Summer, but numbers attending every Sunday have increased, so they plan to remain there. Holy Communion is celebrated every Sunday and the format is a mixture of Sacramental, Evangelical and Pentecostal, with the emphasis on ensuring that every visit is an encouraging experience. It is a church that prays for the sick and there have been miraculous results, including a baby of 3 months who was blind, receiving his sight whilst asleep during the sermon. The Pastor told us “People no longer want the church that met the needs of their grandparents - and probably don’t want the idea of ‘church’ anyway - so we will adapt the format to the needs of the newcomers, provided they tell us what they ‘liked’ or ‘didn’t like’. “We are evolving from a group that was ‘institutionalised’ where the format was predictable, into one that is ‘organic’ - where as individuals and as a congregation - we act as if the DNA of Christ was alive within us (which is a sign of the presence of the Holy Spirit within us.” If you’d like to meet someone to accompany you on your first visit, phone Ann on 669 386 701 and she will make arrangements with you.

How many hours can there be in 9 days?
What a lot has happened since I last wrote this column. My husband Clive had a routine visit to our family doctor in the Port Insalud, who arranged for him to have a full blood test the following Friday as he’d been feeling more tired, had painful joints and not keen to walk far for the past six months. Following the blood analysis, we had an appointment to see our doctor again the following Friday for the results. On the Tuesday following the Friday blood test, Dra. Mulet phoned to say Clive's kidneys weren't functioning correctly which had made his uric acid level higher and she’d booked an appointment to see the renal consultant two days later in Denia Hospital.

The renal consultant booked an appointment for a kidney scan later in February and another appointment to see him two weeks later. During the following four weeks, Clive had two visits by ambulance to Urgencias in Denia because he was in so much pain. The uric acid had caused gout in his fingers, hands, toes, feet, knees, elbows, shoulders, in all the joints. The third ambulance visit to Urgencias in Denia resulted in a nine day stay in hospital to try to stabilise him. We had two days in one of the boxes in Urgencias and then Clive was moved to room A301. Because he had spent so much time in bed for the three weeks preceding his stay in hospital, he couldn’t stand or walk, he was so weak. I moved into the hospital and was able to help with the general caring, feeding,

washing, etc. Clive was in a single room with a bed-settee in the corner and during the nights I was able to make the settee into a bed, the hospital even supplied sheets and a blanket for me. The nurses and doctors were absolutely marvellous and the treatment excellent. Blood was taken on a regular basis to see how things were progressing and a diabetic test done a couple of times each day as well as the usual temperature and blood pressure. Clive was wheeled down by a porter in his bed to have scans and X-rays, the doctors couldn't have been more thorough. The food on the whole was very good and usually it was served hot. Coffee and biscuits were served mid morning and during the afternoon. Most of the nurses were lovely, gentle and helpful, but we did have a strict nurse that shouted at Clive because he couldn't get out of bed and walk by himself. I brought a zimmer frame in from the Oasis Centre and very gradually over the course of a few days, we managed to get Clive to stand and walk from his room down the passage-way to the nurses station, relying heavily on the zimmer frame. Asset Declaration Modelo 720 – are you ready? By the 31st March 2014, you will have had to submit your Modelo 720 Asset Declaration. Failure to do so could result in extremely heavy fines and penalties.
The Modelo 720 was introduced by the Spanish authorities in an attempt to ensure that Spanish nationals reported all their offshore assets – those assets not held in Spain. As a direct result of the introduction of this Asset Declaration, many ex-pats from all nationalities have found that they too have had to make such a declaration.
According to the Spanish press, an estimated 70,000 expatriates have said ‘adios’ to Spain, and either returned home or relocated. Although I am sure that this exodus is not purely down to Modelo 720, it surely has had an influence. The ‘real’ winners of this declaration are undoubtedly Spanish accountants, who have been able to charge fees and expenses for submitting your paperwork. The ‘losers’ are those of us who have absolutely nothing to hide, have declared all assets and income from all sources, but now have to spend time and money fulfilling further bureaucratic legislation.

That aside, there are some important things you need to know about Modelo 720.
There are three types of assets (categories) that the Modelo 720 covers. These are: a. Property. b. Banking. c. Investments (including pensions, life assurances, shares, etc).
If any of these asset classes is greater than 50,000€ as at 31st December 2013, are located out of Spain (i.e. UK, Channel Islands, etc.) and you are a taxresident in Spain, you will have to make a declaration by 31st March 2014. For example, if you hold four bank accounts, each with £12,500, the collective total value would be GBP 50,000. call to say that a friend of ours, Jean had fallen in the street and was being admitted with suspected broken bones. After spending a day in Urgencias, she was admitted to A226 which was on the floor below us, so I was able to visit Jean during the day and Joy, her carer would put the kettle on and make us a lovely cup of tea. Since arriving back home I have heard that Alice, who attends most of our Sunday morning services (see page 9). We began to think we’d be able to justify a service in the Hospital! On the day Clive was discharged, he had an appointment at 12.45 to see the renal consultant for the result of his scan. We didn't need to keep that appointment because the consultant came up to Clive's room and told him the recent blood test showed that the kidneys were back to normal and there was no need for treatment or medication, but he would like to see Clive in June for a check-up. I thought how thoughtful it was of the consultant to have put himself out and visited Clive with the results rather than us trying to drag Clive down to him. The only downside of our stay in hospital was that Clive had been advised by Jean's interpreter to go home by ambulance if it is offered to him, so when the doctor asked if we wanted the ambulance to take him home, we accepted. With Clive not being able to stand or walk unaided, I thought it would be better to accept the lift home in the ambulance and hopefully the men would take him all the way to our apartment on the third floor rather than me have the problem of getting him into our apartment if I took him in my car. The main problem is that there are four stairs from the front door to the lift and I knew there was no way I would get Clive up those stairs on my own. I had my car parked in one of the hospital car parks and we agreed that when the ambulance arrived and collected Clive, I would drive home and hopefully arrive before the ambulance. We anticipated there would be other people needing a lift in the same ambulance so there might be quite a delay. We’d been told by the nurses when we vacated the room at 1.45, that we might have to wait until 3pm or 4pm. Well, those times came and went and still no sign of the ambulance. When I enquired at the nurses station I was told it could be 5pm. Well, 5pm came and went. By this time Clive was getting very uncomfortable and tired sitting in the
wheelchair for so long. I went to the main reception on the ground floor to ask if they had a list of the people going home that day by ambulance, in case we had been missed off the list. But no, there was no list. I saw a couple of ambulance drivers collecting a patient from B block and told them my husband had been waiting for over three hours for an ambulance and they told me it can be any time up to 6pm. By this time I am looking for plan B. When I looked out of the window I could see a parking space reserved for ambulances only, so Clive and I decided that if the ambulance men hadn't arrived by 6pm, I would wheel Clive in the wheelchair to the ground floor, go and fetch the car and park it in the ambulance space while I got him on board. We would face the problems as they arose!!! At 6pm, I told the nurses that we couldn't wait any longer as my husband was in great discomfort, he had been sat in the hard wheelchair for over four hours after four weeks in bed. I took him down in the lift and to the back entrance where the ambulance space was. I was a bit worried about getting Clive into the car because there seemed to be nobody around I could ask to help, but Clive decided that ‘come what might’ he would ‘somehow’ get into our car. I collected the car, parked it up and went into the back door of the hospital to collect Clive in the wheelchair. Just as I wheeled him out to the car, a young couple came round the corner and without even asking for help, the young man who immediately spoke to us in English (do we look English, or what?) rushed forward and lifted Clive from the chair into the back seat of my car. I am quite convinced God had seen our need and sent an ‘angel’ to help us. So far so good!!! The journey home was uneventful and when we arrived we rang our friend Marcos who is the Pastor of the Spanish Evangelical Church and within ten minutes he arrived, drove my car into the underground car park of our apartment block while I went upstairs for a wheelchair. Marcos lifted Clive from the car and into the wheelchair and I was able to take him all the way up to the third floor in the lift, avoiding the four steps inside the front door. As I write these words Clive has been home for ten days. He is still finding it difficult to stand and walk but each day I see an improvement. He hasn't been in the Oasis Centre for over

five weeks but we believe it won't be much longer before he is strong enough to go back. He has been greatly missed there and I know he misses being there. So many people have been into the Oasis or phoned to find out how Clive is. I have had so many offers of help that it has overwhelmed me. I would like to thank all of you who have shown concern and offered help. I would also like to thank our friend Sheila who a few years ago donated to the Oasis Centre an invalid bed. Sheila donated it to us to loan to people who urgently need the use of this type of bed for a short period. Little did we know when we accepted it, that we would be so grateful for the use of it while Clive has been ill. We live in a duplex and we sleep and have Clive’s office upstairs. Because stairs have been impossible for five weeks, Peter our son and his friend Jason brought the bed from "Kickstart" our premises in the Town to our apartment and put it in the lounge, and Clive will have to sleep there until he can easily manage stairs again. Peter, our son has been a tower of strength to us and has single handed manned the Oasis Centre for us for three weeks as well as dropping everything when we needed urgent help. Many of us take good health for granted, Clive didn't see a doctor for years and years, and six weeks ago he was walking OK, although he was slow. None of us know when bad health will hit us, but it is a great comfort to know that the health care here in Spain is excellent. Dra. Mulet our health centre doctor has been marvellous, and the care Clive has received while being in hospital has exceeded our expectations. He already has appointments later this month for a scan, blood analysis and an appointment to see the doctor who treated him in hospital. How relieved (and surprised) we were that so many of the doctors and nurses spoke such understandable English. We love our life in Spain.

In fact, this dedication of my staff and I seems a lot more positive and constructive than the daily fight against dog poo, the repetition of the recycling advices and the sterile battle I keep losing against the youngsters who ignore that they don't have to urinate through the gates of the “Portal del Clot” parking! Mind you, in the case of the reaction against the petrol drillings, I also feel impotent and powerless. In spite of our efforts, the government has decided to go ahead! Where I hope to be more successful is with the conflict I started against a building Company which, without thinking twice, cut four 50-yearold pine trees on a municipal “zona verde” down on the beach of “LA BARRACA”. WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU GET ILL?
Not too far into the start of 2014, I made the observation “In the last 6 months I feel as if I’ve aged 10 years.”
I’d experienced my first attack of GOUT a few years back, and knew what it was because the large toe on my right foot became red and swollen. It kept me away from church that Easter. This time there was no redness or swelling but I became increasingly unable to cope, so weak that I had to drag myself upstairs, by both hands, one-stepat-a-time. Next I was too weak to climb stairs so borrowed a hospital-type bed from the Oasis Centre. Within a week I was bedbound and hallucinating. Whenever I needed to be moved, Pastor Marcos, Martín or Alex from the Spanish church in Jávea would come and assist. Not many people have seen me in tears of pain, but they did. Peter and Jason also helped me downstairs. The trouble had - I thought - begun when I sat down awkwardly in my office chair on the Saturday evening, but NO! the Gout had returned, and this time in my fingers, wrists, elbows and even my right ear. The right ear (like the right big toe of the first attack) was the give-away, but I knew nothing of Gout of the ear, concerning myself with the probability of a melanoma. In the 28 years of living in Spain I’d never (personally) been admitted to A&E - and the dreaded ‘box’ - which after all, turned out to be the Spanish word for ‘cubicle’. When I was admitted to A&E I had an Identification bangle put on my left wrist and was then pushed into the ‘box’ alongside a man who had the bed, whereas I was on a trolley. Despite two other major incidents (a son who attempted to kill his own father by stabbing, before trying to take his own life and a poorly baby being medivacked to Valencia), within 45 minutes I was in xRay department for multishots of the lower back and my left shoulder and a full set of blood samples taken. Every part of me was aching, and the staff threw me about like a sack of potatoes. I’m not implying anything but 100% intent to care, but if the patient doesn’t have a badge indicating

Aquario New Hospital 5 days earlier I discovered that the former Acuario Maternity Hospital in Beniarbeig, was reopening on the Friday evening. Thinking I was on the mend I went there only to discover a total lack of seating, and the local Mayor was more than an hour late in arriving for the opening ceremony. I’d only been there a few minutes when Juan Crisomosto (Director of Amigos Ambulance Service) arrived and introduced me to professional colleagues, including the

Director General of Clinico Medical Denia, who were the new owners (with Banco Santander) of the Hospital facility. I asked Juan about the ‘Amigos’ service and was told the Annual Fee had been increased to 45€. On the way home my wife and I agreed we would rejoin. We’d originally been Nº 0001 when Juan (Cruz Roca Local Manager and his Secretary) were sacked by Cruz Roja and created the Amigos alternative. The PP group have always supported Amigos whereas the Socialists support the Cruz Roja (Red Cross). Having stood for so long at the Aquario New Hospital, I was in agony arriving back home in Jávea. The next day, Ann walked to the Amigos office to make us ‘socios’ (45€) and asked if they could lift me back into bed, from where I had fallen on the floor. They gave Ann her Socio Number 3007, but couldn’t issue the Identity card until the following Tuesday. The Amigos charged 45€ (because our application hadn’t been processed) to get me off the bedroom floor and into bed for which there was a fee of 45€. Continued on page 25

Jávea Townhall and Marina Salud - the regional health service - have reached an agreement that facilitates obtaining a SIP card to foreigners who register at the Townhall. Interested parties may initiate the process to obtain health benefits in the OAC and Help Desk.
The Townhall of Jávea and the company responsible for health care between Denia and Calpe have reached an agreement to facilitate newcomers to Jávea being granted a SIP card and the right to have a doctor and health care totally separate from the European Health Card (EHIC). According to the Councillor for Foreigners, Oscar Anton, regularising their access to health care can be difficult for those coming from abroad, many of them elderly and with a poor knowledge of the Spanish language. This problem and the great ignorance of their health rights were part of the conclusions drawn from the lectures on health for residents organized by the Help Desk, so Oscar contacted Marina Health to find a solution. The new agreement allows
newcomers to start processing SIP at the same time as they register on the Padrón in the Office of Citizen Services (OAC ) at Av. Amanacer 2. Registration with Marina Salud will be completed at the same time. Marina Salud will contact the person in their own language to inform them of their rights and benefits. The head of the management area and patient guidance of Marina Salud, Maite López, has indicated that it is a "simple and voluntary" procedure which does not involve any cost to the recipient. Many people are unaware of the rights they have as residents of Jávea and preventive programmes such as vaccination campaigns for flu or early detection of colon or breast cancer. Lopez said that this system is already available in Calpe with good results. The Mayor said he hopes this new incentive will become the pattern, as when receiving services and financial transfers from the state, it is important for the municipality that all its inhabitants are regularised. Not surprisingly, it is estimated that between 7,000 and 10,000 Jávea citizens are not registered.

The Amigos ambulance is always available for Urgent transport, but there is a two-month period (as I understand it) before their ambulance can be used for non-urgent visits to the Hospital at preferrential cost Juan mentioned to me that he’d been told of another similar medical transport team who quoted their fee as 10€ “but that is EVERY month and straight from your bank account.” At various times over the past two years I have sought the opinion and treatment of an Osteopath in Benitachell as well as Chiropractors in Calpe and Jávea. I volunteered my belief that I suffered from many years of poor posture, with neck and shoulder pain, for which they all treated me. Despite all their efforts, I didn’t receive the ‘quickfix’ I’d received in the UK - which is probably not surprising as the underlying cause of the new pain wherever I had a joint - was GOUT, in the shoulder, neck and ear (where it is called Tophi) that far from getting worse day-by-day were almost now totally gone, after drinking half-a-teaspoon of Bicarbonate of Soda, in 8oz of water 3 or 4 times each day. It was Pastor Marcos Sanz who came to my apartment to encourage us, and pray for the pain to be gone! Do you know - it went - immediately he prayed! Only on one or two further occasions did the (original) low lumbar pain return,
after I had been poorly handled. On the Tuesday evening, as I had a fever and hallucinating. Marcos suggested I be admitted to A&E in Denia by Amigos because the Government regional ambulances were involved in a stabbing and attempted suicide in Jávea Port. Initial diagnosis (and probably reason for hallucinations was pneumonia) with Gout affecting all joints, Arthriritis, Shallow Breathing, Liquid on the Lung, Heart Instability and Loss of Muscle Density, were at the top of the list. There was a ‘Put-U-Up’ in Room A301, but when Church Treasurer JeannieB was admitted a few days later to room 226 on the floor below, Joy ‘her carer’ had a proper hospital bed in which to sleep overnight. I have heard many complaints about the food served to patients in Denia Hospital. Everything is cooked in kitchens on the ground floor and sometimes Ann noticed that the same food was served in the Cafeteria, to staff and relatives. It looked good, was varied and hot (for some reason I had been put on a Diabetic Diet), but as my mouth was so dry, my tongue criss-crossed with ruts like the Nevada desert, the food had very little taste, but to Ann it tasted fine. Among the dishes over my 9-days were: Braised turkey Cream of vegetable soup Fish on the plancha Lentils with vegetables Macarroni bolognese Milanese risotto Mixed salad Moist chicken legs

Rice with chicken and vegetables Roast beef Semolina soup Vegetable stew Yogurt Descafinado coffee was served midmorning and mid-afternoon, with biscuits. On every tray there was a Wholemeal roll and fruit. Orange and Apple were best, but Kiwi cut into the ridges in my tongue, leaving a stinging feeling. At the opening of Hospital Acuario, I have no idea about the food, but after standing for over an hour and a half, I was given a beaker of beer and invited to enjoy Pizza and other regional pastries. A health professional had criticised the equipment (CT Scan, x-Ray, Mamogram, etc) as being out-of-date but it looked every bit as good as used in Denia Hospital. The same health professional arranged for me to have shoulder, neck and lumber x-Rays at the IMED Hospital in Teulada. There was no one available to wheel me from my vehicle to reception and the wind certainly blows when you are only wearing a shirt above the waist, to save time disrobing. The IMED x-Ray technician was very caring and gentle, considering I was in tremendous pain and unable to walk (the day before my admission to Denia hospital for 9 days) but I thought the 6 x-Rays and Interpretation by the Consultant (that I brought away with me) was very good value at 150€. This year’s Junior Presidents for the Fiestas of San Juan are thirteen year old George Walker and 12 year old Kylie Barnes, both of Jávea. Kylie, who loves swimming and singing, was born in Spain and attends Colegio Mª Inmaculada in Jávea. She was four when she first took part in the Fiestas. George is a pupil at the Laude Lady Elizabeth School in Lliber, which was founded by Kylie’s Grandma, Veronica Barnes, back in 1987. George is from California and is a keen ice hockey player. For two ‘foreign’ youngsters to be chosen to be this year’s Junior Presidents there is an important message for us all – Javea’s Fiestas are for everyone, regardless of nationality; so don’t just watch the Fiestas this year; join in, as it really is the best way to enjoy them.
Each year as the Fiestas of San Juan close on June 24th, with the burning of the fallas and the magnificent firework display, the following year’s ‘Quintos’ are getting ready to take over. Quintos are the young people of the town who will be coming eighteen during the coming year. They form a committee (‘Comisión’) and elect Presidents. These are the young adults you see in the Fiestas of San Juan, walking in the processions in their traditional costumes. A ‘Reina’ (Queen) is also elected, along with her two ‘Damas de Honor’ (Maids of Honour). The children you see in costume are members of ‘La Comisión Infantil’ (aged four to eleven). They also have a Queen and two Maids of Honour. The teenagers who form the ‘Comisión Juvenil’ elect Presidents but do not have Queens. (Children and teenagers of any nationality can join the ‘Comisiones’, simply by going along to the Casa de Cultura in the Pueblo during the first term of the school year to put their name on the list.) Being involved in the Fiestas is not just about the Fiestas of San Juan in June; the ‘Quintos’ and teenagers are involved in all the town’s activities throughout the year. They were the people who organized and took part in the Procession of The Three Kings. (Kylie was one of the girls in red skirts helping the children up the steps to see the Kings.) Then in February they are involved in the Carnival activities. The
Presidents have additional responsibilities too, walking with the ‘Alcalde y Concejales’ (Mayor and Councillors) in solemn and formal processions, attending civic events, the Port Fiestas, even accompanying the Mayor on visits to the Fiestas in other towns. You will see George and Kylie during the Easter activities, in the May Fiestas, the July Moors and Christians’ parades, the September Fiestas in Jávea Port, the Santa Lucia Procession in December and again in the Kings’ Procession on January 5th. To be ‘Presidente’ or ‘Presidenta’ is all about pride, honour, responsibility, commitment and duty. George and Kylie’s names will go down in the town’s history book and

when Jávea celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Fiestas of San Juan in 2049, they will be invited back with all the other Presidents and Queens through the ages, to once again don their finery in celebration, just as past Queens and Presidents did in 1999 when Jávea celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Fiestas of San Juan. The official handover from one year’s Fiesta Queens and Presidents to the next takes place in June, usually the first Saturday of the month (7th June this year). A huge stage is erected in the Thursday marketplace along with seating for several hundred people. It’s an evening of pure pomp and ceremony, starting around 7pm with the children and teenagers, then moving on, after nightfall, with the Quintos. Everyone is dressed in their traditional costumes and each girl is announced and presented to the townsfolk, receiving their ‘banda’ (sash) and flowers from the Mayor. This is when George and Kylie will take over from last year’s Presidents. As the new Queens and Presidents are announced, there are fanfares and fireworks. If you haven’t seen this ‘Presentación’ yet, you really should put it in your diary. There’s a bar set up and afterwards there’s dancing into the early hours to a live band. The ‘Presentación’ evening is followed a few days later (this year on Friday 13th June) by the first big street procession called ‘El Pregón’ which usually starts around 7pm from the marketplace. Stay to the end as darkness falls and make your way to the old Town Hall Square, the plaza outside the big church in the centre of the Pueblo. The band leads all the children and Quintos there and the Mayor, Queens and Presidents go into the old Townhall building (Townhall) and appear on the balcony to cheers and whistles. The Mayor declares the Fiestas open and then it’s half an hour of pomp and ceremony, led by the town’s band and closed with yet more fireworks. Another evening well worth putting in the diary! The main Fiesta period runs from June 13th to June 24th and, with so many activities running day and night, it really is a good idea to pick up a Fiesta leaflet from the Tourist Board or one of the local businesses so as not to miss anything – bull running, processions, the giant paella, activities for children, exhibitions, folk dancing displays, traditional music, bands and street discos into the early hours. Most people like to go and see the ‘Ofrenda de Flores’ (flower procession) on the 22nd, then there’s the jumping of the bonfires at midnight on the 23rd and the procession of floats, fireworks and burning of the ‘fallas’ on the 24th. Whatever you go along to see or join in this year, look out for George and Kylie and give them a wave. Enjoy the fiestas!
