TOM, FROM THE MONTGÓ RELIVES D-DAY AGAIN 1€

The News/views Magazine ABOUT and FOR Jávea - you can hold in your hand

Nº 14 June/July 2014 Suggested

Tom Clark and his wife Lesley again made their annual pilgrimage to Normandy, from their Montgó home, to remember (or might it be to try and forget?) the events of 6th June 1944.

We make no apology for our picture, which indicates that Tom had feelings of ‘high’ and ‘low’ throughout the day the real strain was on Lesley. Going back to 1944, Tom was with 48 Royal Marine Commando, and at 24 years of age was a Troop Sergeant

If any explanation is still needed

We could have called this local magazine HAVVYER HEARD, but we thought Jávea Jeard would confirm our light-hearted attitude to the serious political and economic problems in Spain, and their effect on Jávea.

Major. They landed on the beach at St. Aubin sue Mer 7am - which they cleared - and worked their way back to the shore, clearing the way from Langrune sur Mer. Then it was time for Tom and his men to move ‘inland’ over the Pegasus Bridge. The day had begun badly, having sailed from Southampton with 99% of everyone on board vomitting into the sea during the rough trip. At one point the Navy who were responsible for the ‘Landing Craft Infantry Small’ lowered the steps and wished everyone the best. So keen were the ship’s crew to get out of danger, that they lowered the steps too soon and the men walked off the steps into water that was so deep they had to swim ashore. The swell of the sea was so strong that the steps of some Landing Craft were immedately swept away, preventing the ‘passengers’ from disembarking. Tom’s boat floated over the underwater sea defences,. and

he and his men were already under heavy fire from the enemy Whom we now have to call Nazis but they were called Germans if you were polite and Kraut if you were not. Tom’s men were like a row of sitting ducks to German snipers, so Tom rallied them to form a zigzag up the beach towards the higher ground. It is said (on the internet) that Tom destroyed an enemy pill-box by running at it as eratically as he could, jumping on top, then popping a grenade inside. Tom received his medal from Montgomery in the field in July and subsequently from the King at Buckingham Palace. It was ‘only’ the Military Medal, as Tom was ‘only’ a sergeant, not an officer.

Donation

All his officers were killed or maimed. He led men in the liberation on Langrune sur Mer, but from the inside out, and found it more heavily fortified than St Aubin sur Mer. Tom doesn’t regard himself as ‘heroic’ - they just got on with it.

Townhall meetings on May 29

Jávea Jeard

June/July 2014, Nº 14

Page 3

Two hours before the normal 8pm meeting of Jávea Councillors, members of the Committee of AMJASA met to report a profit of almost a million €uros.

But this meeting decides Townhall decisions

AMJASA meeting might look like the 8pm meeting of Councillors - but it wasn’t

AMJASA’S Annual Report was published during the meeting arranged in the Council Chamber at the Townhall, two hours before the monthly meeting of Councillors. The Board unanimously approved the results of legal audits and performance by the company which is responsible for provision of drinking water in Jávea. Their agenda also included the application of the municipal group Nueva Jávea to replace one of the directors, but the easiest way would be for Nueva Jávea to nominate a replacement for their previous man, who had resigned. AMJASA closed its accounts with significant benefits, of 956. 622 euros before tax. The Mayor, José Chulvi, stressed that, as in recent years, this amount will be reinvested in improved network efficiency. In 2013 the surplus provided funds to invest 588.000 euros in renewing pipes (almost 3,000 metres), provide leak detection equipment, energy improvements and dedicate another 254,000 euros in machinery, new furniture and equipment. On the balance sheet, the main expenses are 3.5 million euros for the purchase of water from the desalination plant, 1.6 million in wages, 907,000 euros of current spending, 842,000 euros of investments and other 662,000 dedicated to

purchasing power. In terms of revenue, the largest item is the 7.9 million in water sales, that represents 91.5% economic input of the company. The report prepared by the CEO, Josep Lluis Henarejos highlights the increase in recruitment and change of ownership, which has improved the collection management and there has been a decline in revenues from the provision of services by lower sales of water, a situation that has changed dramatically since 2014 with the persistent drought. Another issue highlighted by the AMJASA board was the almost 200,000 euros charged by the Generalitat management for water treatment, from which there was no benefit to AMJASA. AMJASA has faced recent years without increasing water rates and has improved customer service. Additionally work of "social responsibility", with actions such as collaboration with the side of food aid to people in fuel poverty, sponsorship of cultural and sports activities and even a donation of equipment for firefighting volunteers. The public company has also improved its environmental awareness, reducing energy consumption on the premises of the company and promoting educational

campaigns to save water. Some of the Councillors who attended the AMJASA meeting moved seats when the meeting was over, with the exchange of AMJASA advisers who had warmed the chairs for Councillors, and it is interesting to see that each Councillor in a ‘Group’ sits in a position appropriate to their ‘pecking order’. The monthly meeting of Councillors was opened by Jose Chulvi, the Mayor, Point 1 Minutes were unanimously approved - no questions - of the meetings on

27th March and 29th April, 2014. Point 2 Approved the decisions made by the Mayor’s office since the April meeting. Point 3 Acknowledged the Treasurer’s report which stated supplier invoices on which there were queries. Point 4  On the proposal of the Mayor, Councillors approved Eduardo Boyer Tuna, current Manager of Javea Parador, to the Tourism Advisory Committee. Point 5 Would normally be Continued on page 15

Agenda 21 Jávea Updates

Xàbia retains Blue Flags  for beaches

Jávea has once more received blue flags for Granadella, Arenal and la Grava (Port) beaches, and the Club Nautico received a flag for services. 387 beaches in Spain have received blue flags, 47 in Alicante Province. The blue flag is awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) - an NGO.

On the heels of Spain’s  illicit shoemakers

The authorities in Valencia have so far closed down around 44 clandestine workshops, 60 percent of them supplying the shoe industry. The others, located in basements, garages and farm buildings, were involved in everything from car cleaning and leather goods, to furniture making. In some cases, the premises doubled as living and sleeping areas. Of the 369 men and women found to be working in these workshops, 253 did

not have contracts and were not paying Social Security contributions. Over the course of the last year, the regional government of Valencia has been carrying out inspections of illegal factories and workshops like this as part of Operation Ecosub, which is aimed at trying to dismantle a hidden economy worth an estimated €253 billion in Spain, equivalent to 24.6 percent of GDP, according to 2012 figures, placing it on a par with the likes of Italy and Portugal, but way above Germany (13.1 percent), France (10.8 percent) and the United Kingdom (10.1 percent).

Earth tremors in Valencia caused by undersea gas plant, report confirms

An official report has officially confirmed for the first time that there is a “direct relationship” between the 512 earth tremors recorded in Vinaròs in Castellón province last September and the injection of gas into the nearby Castor offshore storage plant. The National Geographic Institute (IGN) report ruled out that the seismic activity had its origins in the Amposta fault line – upon which the plant is built – as was first suspected. “We’re dealing with another fault, one that is not mapped,” it said. “The injection of gas has accelerated a seismotectonic process with a build-up of forces that already existed in the area, but that had not been categorized before,” it added.

Costa Nova - a job being carried out by Iberdrola. Last year, a forest fire had been initiated in the area by an electrical fault. The firewall is about 20m wide, and preserved valuable forest species, while removing combustible material. A major problem had been that the firebreak cuts through several private plots and it was necessary to obtain permission from the various owners.

Falling rocks hit beach safety, and Jávea coffers

Jávea Townhall has spent €15,000 to replace and repair the metal mesh that protects visitors from falling rocks mainly along the cliffs of Granadella Bay. In the meantime Ambolo beach (the nudist beach) and the Tangó or Pope cove (just beyond the Port, in the Marine Reserve area) remain officially closed for safety reasons because of large rock falls. Although some remedial works will be carried out to remove small rocks from blocking the mesh at Ambolo, the danger is still high and cost or repairing/replacing the meshes at Tangó bay exceed the municipal budget. An overdose of Tourism? According to a new documentary, Barcelona has become “a theme park”. So many tourists are visiting the city that life for local residents has deteriorated to an intolerable level and the city is at risk of losing its unique centre as it sells itself to holiday makers. The documentary "Bye Bye Barcelona" highlights the problems which could result from over-doing tourism. In just under an hour it argues Continued on page 6

that the problem isn’t individual, redbellied tourists loudly drinking their way around the town (although the inclusion of a photojournalism essay may suggest otherwise). Instead it’s the rapid speed the industry has expanded across this relatively small city - an unmanaged consequence of a triumphant Olympic rebranding in 1992. In 1990 a mere 1.7 million tourists visited the city. In 2013 more than 8 million are expected to dock into Port Vell or disembark from a low-price RyanAir plane. Barcelona is now the fourth most popular European city for tourists, after London, Paris and Rome.

20th "Green" rubbish collection point opened

A new "Green" rubbish collection site for disposal of sorted waste has been opened in the Saladar area of Jávea. This is the 20th such site in the town having separate containers for organic waste, glass, plastic, paper and cardboard, plus cooking oil, garden prunings and leaves, and clothing and footwear. The cost of setting up the site was some €30,000 and it will serve Toscal and Tossalet.

Amjasa makes  956,622€ profit

Amjasa ended 2013 with a profit of 956,622€, over a year where it renewed 3,000m of mains water pipes. Water rates have not been raised, and the company had also contributed to social programmes such as food banks.

Repsol wins govt approval for $10bn Canary Islands drilling

Repsol won government approval to start a $10bn oil drilling project off Spain’s Canary Islands, signalling success in its 12-year campaign to start exploration near the Atlantic archipelago. Spain’s environment ministry cleared the plan with conditions. The decision follows a reconfirmation in 2012 of an exploration licence first awarded in 2001 and later tied up in court battles. Several hurdles remain for Repsol. The Supreme Court was expected to rule June 10 on a challenge to its exploration permit. Central to the review was whether there are enough safeguards to stop an oil spill, a heightened concern after the Macondo disaster in the US Gulf of Mexico The volcanic islands’ beaches, nature reserves and clear waters off Africa make them a top draw for tourists to Spain, the world’s most-visited nation after the US and France. The ministry said it’s demanding the most sophisticated safeguards available.

An unexpected find  beneath old Central Cinema

Work on the Central Cinema has not begun, but preliminary archaeaological surveys have discovered the remains of a house which had been demolished in the 1950s to build the Cinema. They found an interior courtyard, paved with cobbles (similar to those which used to pave the church square) and structures which could be parts of various rooms. Its location, in what was previously known as the "Plaza dels Banyuls" indicates it could have been a house belonging to the rich. Excavations are continuing to establish the date of the building.

PP wins European  elections in Jávea

The PP won the European elections in Xàbia with 29.75% of the votes (1609), PSOE were second with 24.27% (1314). Both major parties saw substantial hits on their vote as compared to 2009. Notable here, as in other parts of Spain, was the strong showing of smaller parties such as Compromis as part of Primavera Europa - (BLOC and the greens are part of this coalition party) 8.85%, and Podemos - a new (2014), youthful, left-wing party which picked up 7.5% of the vote. Turnout was 36.6% - 3% less than at the last election in 2009.

European Parliamentary elections: PP 'wins' and PSOE second, but lose a third of their seats

Results of the European Parliamentary elections show that Spain's 'big two' are losing ground, but the PP remains the most-voted party. But both suffered a drastic drop in popularity – the PP has lost eight seats in European Parliament, going from 24 to 16, and whereas four million people in Spain voted for them last month, 6.6 million did so in 2009. Despite a similar result, the PSOE was far from elated with its candidate, Elena Valenciano, calling the outcome 'disappointing' and stating that the party 'must reflect' on its strategies and how it can best give the public what they want. CAN THE BANK GRANTING MY MORTGAGE FORCE ME TO USE THEIR INSURANCE?

Q When signing a mortgage contract, can the bank force me to buy the house insurance with them? A The new Mortgage European Directive came into force in 2013 and forbids Banks from their abusive traditional practice of obliging their customers to contract the house insurance or any other additional financial products together with the mortgage loan.

This means in practice that Spanish banks have been overcharging a lot of expensive commissions frequently for just low quality undercover home insurance, and without the client’s knowledge or consent!

Subsequently, remember that so long as you put the bank as beneficiary of the insurance, you are free to arrange the house insurance with the company of your choice. Do not accept “blackmail” or dubious tactics from your bank Manager!

Are you looking to insure a home in Spain? When living and/or having a second residence in Spain, you ought to have a comprehensive but also competitive house insurance, as to fully cover your dwelling at the event of fire, flooding, robbery…

Moreover, if you have children for example, it is always highly advisable that your house insurance policy should include a “family liability clause”, with at least 150,000€ of coverage, in order to cover for possible damages caused to/by third parties.

Therefore, choosing the right protection for your property in Spain is absolutely crucial and indeed many expats are so excited once they have passed all the many hurdles that buying a property in Spain entails, that they usually feel the insurance is fairly unimportant and something that ‘they will look at later’.

Why not ask us at RICOR ABOGADOS & SOLICITORS, for a quotation. Even if you ask a provider in Jávea, the company making the decisions are likely to be in Madrid or Barcelona, so what’s the difference?

We can guarantee you a complete peace of mind as well as a quick, friendly and excellent efficient response at the event of a claim. Please, visit our website www.ricorabogados.com or contact us by eMail at ricorsolicitors@yahoo.co.uk We look forward to helping you!

At Ricor Abogados&Solicitors, we are proficient with the wording required. You just need to provide us with your details, tell us to whom you wish to leave your property and we will draw up or update your Spanish Will for a very reduced and competitive fee. We hope this information is useful and should you have any additional question, please do not hesitate to contact us by e-mail at ricorsolicitors@yahoo.co.uk or visit our website www.ricorabogados.com.

Hundreds of dismembered corpses found festering in Madrid University storeroom

An investigation is underway into a pile of dissected corpses in a storeroom at Madrid’s Complutense University, after it was revealed in a graphic video. Around 250 cadavers donated to the medical science department were being stored in appalling conditions, shown in footage published by Spanish daily newspaper El Mundo. It reported that some of the bodies had been there for up to seven years, describing the shambolic storeroom as a ‘scene from a horror film’. The bodies and parts of bodies were reportedly stored without any method of identification. The footage reveals a pair of black feet on the lid of a rubbish bin. Some photographs showed random body parts strewn across the storeroom floor. University authorities have announced they are arranging a funeral parlour to dispose of the bodies immediately, and an internal investigation has been launched. The University confirmed that it receives around 50 donated corpses a year, to be used for teaching trainee doctors. It blamed the scene on a lack of staff and claimed El Mundo published a ‘distorted view of reality’. “The member of staff charged with operating the incinerating took early retirement in December and we haven’t

June/July 2014 Nº 13

been able to fill the position because of a dispute with the union,” said Ramon Merida, director of the anatomy department. Madrid Complutense University released this statement: “The cadaver remains were undergoing a drying process necessary prior to incineration. “They cannot be disposed of while they contain the chemical products used in order to study them.” ON A LOCAL NOTE Donations for medical research must be pre-arranged through the Dept. of Human Anatomy at San Juan University Hospital, Alicante. BUT it is important that you also let your next-of-kin or neighbour your SECOND preference.

WHY? a) If you are involved in a traffic accident and your body is dismembered, or b) your death is unexplained and an autopsy is required, your offer to donate your remains will be rejected.

Jávea Councillors have approved the final award of the redevelopment of the street and adjacent Barranquet, in the neighbourhood of Freginal, after disqualifying two companies that has an estimated cost of 449,9787 €uros. The project, which will start imminently, will involve the resurfacing of the streets of the neighborhood, located between Avenida Palmela and the Freginal camí. Following the development, several changes of direction of the streets, many will become one way to improve safety. A fence around the sports complex that includes the municipal soccer field, a sports court and trinquet and sidewalk surrounding the football field will also be placed finish. As reported by the Mayor, José Chulvi, Freginal project is one of the most important to the municipal government, which is why when the end of the Barranquet is raised, they chose a more ambitious project resulting in an overall improvement of the neighbourhood both in image and infrastructure and security. The Townhall recognises that start of the work has been delayed longer than he would have liked due to bureaucratic problems.

I often try to put myself in the position of a ‘newcomer’ as my wife and I were (then with a holiday apartment) and having lived here 22 years I find it just as difficult. Newspapers are full of adverts of all shapes and sizes, and whenever the subject of TV/Satellite reception is mentioned on Facebook there is always a response by the same people, saying that “so and so” - “is the best in Spain.” What they really mean, is that they used a particular individual or company and have not had major problems. Many of those recommended are no longer in Spain and have given access to the phone number to someone else whose standard of workmanship may be inferior. Whether an installer is worthy of recommendation depends on a number of factors: 1) How long have they been installing satellite or other receiving

equipment? 2) Do they ‘look’ like electronic technicians, rather than people in overalls suggesting they are really under-utilised plumbers or painters? 3) Do they answer your questions without being evasive? 4) Do they show you the equipment they use (like a Signal Strength Metre and Analyser) that will ensure your installation is ‘right first time’? 5) Are they able to give you phone contact numbers of satisfied customers (not as fool-proof as you might think)? 6) What guarantee/warranty do they offer? 7) Does the equipment they propose look ‘cheap’ or ‘professional’?

I like to think that my 22 years living here (Balcon al Mar) and that I contribute to Jávea Grapevine and Jávea Jeard gives reassurance. The founder of both, Clive Read, is a friend of almost 30 years (and former UK aerial and satellite installer) himself invited me to be his magazine´s satellite expert. Having been in the area for over 22 years your satisfaction is assured. We have an excellent range of freeto-view H.D. digiboxes some with full record facilities offering 350 Gb, also on offer genuine Sky+H.D.+ Record Facilities. Finally we promote a range of Manhattan satellite receivers, all offering the best in freesat viewing and some with a record/playback facility - so you never need miss another programme!

My testing has proved that good results can be obtained for BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, Channel 4, Five and of course the huge Sky offering. I must emphasize that we are 1200 miles from the ‘Target’ area of the U.K. and Northern Ireland and as such we were never intended to receive any of these Channels. However, through a combination of years of practice and my passion in this area, you will be able to receive many of the channels you would as if you were in the U.K… with the benefit of beautiful Spanish weather. Jávea Jeard Miracle

According to the Bible, Jesus was born in Bethlehem, in Palestine, a country where people are called Mohammed, Abdel, Mounir, Aziz, Ahmed, Farid, Omar, Youssouf, Mouloud, etc. Yet he called John, Peter, Paul, Philip, Mark, Thomas, Luke, Matthew, Andrew, Simon, Judas, Bartholomew to form his campaign team. Now that's what I call a miracle! ------------ -

Jokes Only Engineers Will Understand

1. Normal people believe that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Engineers believe that if it ain't broke, it doesn't have enough features yet.

2. To the optimist, the glass is half-full. To the pessimist, the glass is half-empty. To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be.

3. A priest, a doctor, and an engineer were waiting one morning for a particularly slow group of golfers. The engineer fumed, "What's with those guys? We must have been waiting for fifteen minutes!" The doctor chimed in, "I don't know, but I've never seen such inept golf!" The priest said, "Here comes the green-keeper. Let's have a word with him." He said, "Hello George, what's wrong with that group ahead of us? They're rather slow, aren't they?" The green-keeper replied, "Oh, yes. They are a group of blind firemen. They lost their sight saving our clubhouse from a fire last year, so we always let them play for free anytime." The group fell silent for a moment. The priest said, "That's so sad. I think I will say a special prayer for them tonight." The doctor said, "Good idea. I'm going to contact my ophthalmologist colleague and see if there's anything he can do for them." The engineer said, "Why can't they play at night?" 4. What is the difference between electrical engineers and civil engineers? Electrical engineers build weapons. Civil engineers build targets.

5. The graduate with a science degree asks, "Why does it work?" The graduate with an engineering degree asks, "How does it work?" The graduate with an accounting degree asks, "How much will it cost?"

YOU DESERVE  A LAUGH

The graduate with an arts degree asks, "Do you want fries with that?"

6. Three engineering students were gathered together discussing who must have designed the human body. One said, "It was a mechanical engineer. Just look at all the joints." Another said, "No, it was an electrical engineer. The nervous system has many thousands of electrical connections." The last one said, "No, actually it had to have been a civil engineer. Who else would run a toxic waste pipeline through a recreational area?"

7. An engineer was crossing a road one day, when a frog called out to him and said, "If you kiss me, I'll turn into a beautiful princess." He bent over, picked up the frog and put it in his pocket. The frog then cried out, "If you kiss me and turn me back into a princess, I'll stay with you for one week and do ANYTHING you want." Again, the engineer took the frog out, smiled at it and put it back into his pocket. Finally, the frog asked, "What is the matter? I've told you I'm a beautiful princess and that I'll stay with you for one week and do anything you want. Why won't you kiss me?" The engineer said, "Look, I'm an engineer. I don't have time for a girlfriend, but a talking frog, now that's cool."

8. A wife asks her husband, a software engineer, "Could you please go shopping for me and buy one carton of milk, and if they have eggs, get six." A short time later, the husband comes back with six cartons of milk. The wife asks him, "Why did you buy six cartons of milk?" He replied, "They had eggs."

etc) and choose from a good selection of suitable satellite receivers.

All Installations are completed using the latest Promax Test Equipment with advanced technology including a spectrum analyzer that guarantees top class performance of all BBC, ITV Channel 4 and Five programmes.

Within the next two to three months the 2G Transponder will be launched, carrying a ‘Spot Beam’ along with a Euros that we think will cover the remaining Sky and free programmes and is expected to deliver signals for the next 12 years or so. LNB’s  (Low Noise Blocks ) This is the very small unit usually mounted on a bar protruding from the satellite dish face or as an alternative mounted on a three rod structure, again protruding from the satellite dish face. Its purpose is to collect the electro magnetic waves that are redirected from the surface of the satellite dish and these are collected by a wave guide which in

These guides collect the signal and translate this into a meaningful electronic signal, this in turn feeds into High Gain Amplifiers within the shell of the LNB. The power required to supply the LNB operation is sent up the coaxial cable, the same coaxial cable that feeds the recovered signal down to the satellite receiver. However another interesting feature is that the Electro Magnetic Waves and sent on both a horizontal and vertical plain to accommodate this feature the power, i.e. a D.C. Voltage is switched from approximately 12V D.C. to 18V D,C. this has the effect of varying this voltage according to the preprogrammed settings held within the Satellite Receiver!!! Most LNB’s have a figure used to boost the sales of the item by claiming very low noise figures when compared with other in a range of different types of shell. However we pay little attention to that figure but prefer instead to by guided by the manufacturers figures quoted as

One in five Spanish job seekers has not worked in three years

Six years into a profound jobs crisis, and the full effects of long-term unemployment are beginning to emerge. Figures from the latest Active Population Survey show that 60% of Spain’s 6 million unemployed have not worked in a year. What’s worse is that among this group, the proportion of people who have been without work for three years or more is growing, and now stands at one out of every five job seekers, according to data published recently by the National Statistics Institute (INE). Experts say long-term unemployment will be the worst legacy of the crisis, and the most difficult to tackle. Those who have gone more than three years without finding work no longer have the right to unemployment benefit and, in most cases, job-seeking-related subsidies.

If realised, orange farmers would have to give up some of their land, since the road and tracks would be 10m wide. The proposal has already met with criticism, since the quiet, scenic country lane which currently runs beside the river would turn into a major thoroughfare.

Everything you need to survive the Spanish Health Service - for 6,50€

The Health Service in Spain is every bit as good - and many say MUCH better than in the UK, but no matter the level of professionalism and skill of the doctor or nursing staff - if you don’t speak Spanish, ‘Murphy’s Law’ says those who care for you will not understand English or Spanglish. What they DO understand on the Costa Blanca, and instantly recognise, is the Booklet “Tell the Doctor” which lists all the words and phrases you are likely to need during your visit to the Health Centre or Hospital. The book is NOT intended to replace a competent Interpreter for those visits when accuracy and understanding are essential. Originally compiled by Jenny Bussey, founder of Jalon Valley HELP, copies can be obtained from the OASIS HELP CENTRE, C/. Toni Llido 5 (at the rear of La Caixa bank in the Port) for 6,50€ a copy. Tell the Doctor is also published in French and German, but the OASIS generally only stocks the (blue covered) English edition.

PUBLIC PARTICIPATION IN BUDGET PROPOSALS

factor of cross-modulation, in essence this means that a horizontal signal and a vertical signal offer the highest rejection to each other and in that way reducing dramatically the effect they have on each other!!!

As part of the Agenda 21 initiative, residents were encouraged to submit ideas to be funded from a ‘set-aside’ budget of 400.000 €.

We do find that some Manufacturers do tend to make wild claims about the performance of their LNBs ,we enjoy putting an LNB through its paces over a period of several days and better still varying weather conditions. For that reason we test in both the U.K. and Spain using identical Test Equipment and Calibrated by our preferred manufacturer Promax.

Many proposals were submitted, each of which were considered by a Jávea Townhall employee, to ensure they were: a) Needed b) Feasible c) Not being already undertaken by some other Government Department.

Among the successful suggestions was a net, 2m in depth, that would prevent jellyfish from mixing with bathers. It was among the proposals to be funded, and proposer Tony Cabban was quite pleased, until he was informed that a Jávea Townhall employee had rejected the proposal because it would not work. Tony Cabban was asked for further justification, which he obtained from a ‘Google’ search that anyone in Townhall could have done. Tony responded: I cannot find any studies either, but the following places have successfully installed them:

Monaco, since 2006 Antibes, Cannes, Beaulieu sur Mer, Villefrance since at least 2008(all well known French resorts, Catalonia and Tunisia. Murcia installed 43 kms of nets in 2012(?) and reinstalled them a few days ago (so obviously successful). There have been problems with nets being clogged with dead jellyfish. Where nets had been installed in MarMenor locations there was insufficient current to keep the jellyfish moving. Such situation does not exist in Jávea. There is nothing new about these nets they have been widely used for a number of years.

The design: A long tube floats the length of the net to support the net and also projects above the water to prevent jellyfish being washed over the top. The net hangs 2m below the float with the top 30-40 cms being fine mesh to avoid jelly fish being cut up and stinging pieces then floating through the net. The remainder of the net would be of wider mesh to allow fish to pass through and to allow free passage of water. There are weights at the bottom of the net to avoid it floating to the surface. When the first jellyfish are sighted, the net is distributed by attaching support float to buoys that define swimming limit. There are tried and tested suppliers in France and Italy.

If there is any doubt about this project I suggest a trial at the Arenal at a cost of probably 20,000 euros. I understand that there is money available in the Townhall budget.

Between 1,200 and 5,700 people have been treated by the Red Cross per year in recent years. Many people will have treated themselves, so sufferer figures are higher. The effect on young children can be very serious.

approved ‘on the nod’ as it approved basic expenditure, but PP Spokesman, Jose Luis Genoves, who sought justification for AMJASA making a surplus of almost a million €uros, yet offering no reduction in the price charged to their consumers. He didn’t object to agreements with various organisations but said the amounts paid should not include hidden costs. Jose Luis questioned why the Townhall was still paying to rent property - and quoted the 600-700€ rent for the Juzgado de Paz premises, and was told by the Mayor that the Juzgado de Paz would be incorporated into the new premises located above CLOT underground parking. 1600€ a month rent was being paid for the Casa de Pescador, that will continue to be used until the Social Centre is finalised. Point 6 approved expenditure of 17,225€. Point 7 took into account the financial position of the Townhall at the end of the first quarter of 2014. Point 8 authorised action to be taken against businesses in Jávea that were not meeting their tax responsibilities to the Townhall. Point 9 approved a price revision with Acciona who manage the desalination plant, which is based on a fixed rate plus a surcharge in respect of the amount of water produced. Point 10  An insurance claim by Diher Promoinvest for damages of 999€ caused to the building at Ronda Sur Nº 44, would be paid by the insurance company with 150€ excess met by the Townhall. Point 11  The Townhall will pay 99€ in damages to Ana Maria Mezquida, in respect of damages to her vehicle. Point 12 approved another insurance claim to Reale Seguros Generales, for damages of 218,25€ to a vehicle. The Townhall will pay €150 excess. Point 13 was a report of obligations to Tomas Montesinos Aracil and Carmen Barrachina Mataix which was approved. Point 14 approved modifications to Point 32 of the Municipal Plan General, relating to Tesoro Park.

MOTIONS Compromis wanted action relating to Monica Obra, a Deputy in Valencia, who her colleagues want to remove her, which was regarded as undemocratic. It appears she had been told on 3 occasions to ‘be quiet’ but her action does not warrant expulsion. Her argument was that she was doing no more than trying to defend herself and sought answers to questions her colleagues refused to provide. Oscar Anton (XD) said that ‘Rules of Debate’ were created so as to ensure everyone behaved in a civilised manner towards each other. Apparently, it is the 3rd time Monica has been asked to leave the debating chamber, earlier occasions were about 3rd World Donations and the cost of the Papal visit. Jávea Major, Jose Chulvi - himself a Diputado but in Alicante - said he believed strongly in Freedom of Speech, and there are rules to follow, but he tried to allow slight flexilibity when it was appropriate. Jávea Council will prepare a Report on the specific needs of low-income (or no-income) families, and putting pressure on the Banks with regard to premises that have been unoccupied for 2 or more years at reduced rent or offer Mortgages that do not exceed 25% of the income of the buyer. Unanimously approved. Jávea EPA (Adult Education) has requested a grant of 175,576€ from the Valencian Government. Passed.

QUESTIONS and ANSWERS Tere (PP) wanted to know from the Sports Councillor, Juanlu Cardona, about a local football team that celebrated their 75th Anniversary. She asked if the Townhall had, as well as the Annual Grant, also paid for the Anniversary celebration? Juan said he believed there had only been the one payment but he would investigate.

Jose Luis (PP) said Councillors were bombarded with information earlier in the year about the Central Cinema, but now felt as if they were being kept in the dark. Will the structure hold? What about the remains of the old house found underneath? He was told that an Archaelogist report was underway, that should be ready in a month. The dates for commencing and finishing work

should not be affected. The structure will be reinforced and the inclined seating should ensure increased visibility for everyone.

Jose Luis (PP) wanted to know when the new Townhall building would be completed. It seems a grant was given but will be lost if the work is not completed before 2015. A lot of planning, phones, electricity, dividers and furniture had already been completed. Quotes had been received and work will progress at one floor level at a time. Jose Luis (PP) reported on a meeting with business owners in the Arenal to talk about pedestrians and car parking. It seemed business owners were willing to controbute towards the cost, but in the Town and Port the full cost was being paid from municipal funds. It was stressed that the Arenal project would have the full backing of the Townhall and it was looking at purchasing adjacent land to the Arenal so that drivers and businesses were not over-disadvantaged.

Tere (PP) asked why there were 3 taxi stops in the Arenal, one sign, one painted and a real one. It will be sorted. The Mayor always looks happy and Continued on page 18

phrase that makes you want to give up dabbling in the art of scribbling altogether and take up 6-pack sofa football.

Wilkins himself delved deeply into the arts of the Zen masters and came up with the footballers’ equivalent of ‘one hand clapping’ when he once quipped: “We keep kicking ourselves in the foot,” in reference to his team’s inability to achieve harmony.

Football and Philosophy

Although not many footballers are attracted to philosophy, there are many philosophers who are attracted to football, where metaphors for life abound, as Nick Hornby demonstrated in his book ‘Fever Pitch’. Most philosophers concur that the most useful metaphor from football is: “never dribble out of defence”, which can of course be applied to most aspects of life, and many other things. “Use both wings” is a hotly contested second favourite, and one that has an almost transcendental significance for people from many professions; especially pilots.

For me, possibly the greatest philosopher of all time, with apologies to Plato, Aristotle, Schopenhauer, Hegel and one or two others, must be Chelsea’s Ray ‘Butch’ Wilkins, who summarised 2,000 years of Oriental philosophy with the immortal words: “simplicity is genius”.

Concepts don’t get more refined than that. Complexity is rarely honed down so succintly. In fact it’s the kind of

Let’s face it, football coaches are the true philosophers of modern society and it is no coincidence that Spain’s highest-selling newspaper is the sports tabloid ‘Marca’. In football you will find all the knowledge you need; more than enough to satisfy even the most demanding of London taxi drivers. Love of knowledge is after all what ‘philosophy’ means, and the word was invented by none other than Pythagoras; he of the triangle, a shape held in holy reverence by freemasons and Barcelona Football Club’s midfield (a deeply suggestive word when you think about it).

The SAS were not the only ones to know that there’s ‘no pain without gain’. Malcolm Allison summed up the notion that a man must struggle with fate, destiny and the capriciousness of the Gods on the long, lonely journey from the end of the tunnel (with or without a fedora hat). As Big Mal pointed out: "You're not a real manager unless you've been sacked."

Salvation and damnation are of course two theological concepts close to the heart of any football manager, although they are more often referred to in whispers as promotion and relegation. As Brian Clough, that most enigmatic of managers, second only to Bill Shankley, made clear: "Saturday comes again, welcome or not, it comes again like it always does, welcome or not, wanted or not, another judgment day — the chance to be saved, the chance to be damned." Clough wasn’t the kind of man to allow labels such as ‘home’ or away’ to pin him down and was often to be seen in the dug-out of rival clubs offering solutions to bewildered players.

Jeard

History repeats itself as all philosophers know, and the coming of the long-ships to the shores of our troubled islands is once again a vital matter for our threatened national character as Norse players and managers disembark in their thousands. One of them, the Aberdeen manager Ebbe Skovdahl, demonstrated that Scandinavian concepts of philosophy are overly simplistic and are forged in smoky halls with charred meat and long, bleak winters when he said: "statistics are like miniskirts: they give you good ideas but hide the important things". Italian coach Arrigo Sacchi, once attempted to deal with the whole ‘chicken and egg’ concept when he stated: "You don't have to have been a horse to be a jockey", in the few moments remaining in a game when, leading 5-0, and with two opposing players sent off, he had to decide whether to continue playing ten men in defence.

Fellow Italian Fabio Capello studied Nobel winning mathematician John Nash’s ‘Game Theory’ for years in a vain attempt to apply pure math to football, but in the end had to admit that: “this is a job. It’s not a game.”

Capello looked therefore to more Classical references to understand the non-binary aspects of 11 versus 11 and concluded that: “if the group doesn’t have the conviction of its own

What have you got to show for 22 years?

In the May edition we announced that Jávea Evangelical Church celebrated its 22nd Birthday. Several people have been into the Oasis Centre to ask what activities the Church has been involved with over the years. So I decided this month to give a brief history of the Church.

The Church's first home was in an apartment block, Edificio Javelec, near Barclays Bank. Unfortunately the Church only met there for a few weeks because other residents in the block objected to us singing hymns at 11am on a Sunday morning, even though the complainants were not in the block on Sunday mornings, they were playing bowls!!! We had talked it over with the President of the block before we moved in and she was more than willing for us

by Ann Read after a 5-year ‘rest’

to take the apartment for the Church, and said it would be handy to be able to attend a service without going out of the front door. But when the residents who lived in the apartment above, complained, we began looking for somewhere else.

Not knowing any of this, Veronica Barnes who established the Lady Elizabeth school which was currently being run from a six bedroomed house in Seniola, contacted us and offered us a home at the school if we ever needed it. So the Lady Elizabeth School was to become our home for the next two years. Our congregation never seemed to grow in number, always about 8 people and we became concerned with numbers, or the lack of them. We wanted the congregation to grow sufficiently for us to move into our own premises. During the two years we were there, our numbers never varied, always around 8.

Page 17

So imagine our surprise when God told us the time had come to move premises. We couldn't understand it. We were waiting for the congregation to expand before moving but if God said it was time to move, then move we would. So the search began for new premises.

We eventually moved into the Oasis Centre in the Port which was home for the next 16 years. The Oasis Centre was 100 square metres and it seemed strange for 8 people to be sitting on white plastic chairs in a circle in the middle of the huge room. Shortly after moving the Church to the new premises, we started a mini-market which was a complete success.

People started coming to the Church after attending the mini-market and our numbers grew quickly and only one year later, 11 people were baptised by total emersion in the swimming pool of the Lady Elizabeth School.

We had 17 happy years at the Oasis Centre and enjoyed many activities. I organised Spanish lessons with Catherine as our teacher and we had over 200 students every year for many years. The fees that the students paid were very low but there was 10 euros put aside for every hour that the premises were used as a donation to the Church's expenses. Continued on page 20

A Jávea Park owner reminded him that ‘one Civic Punt’ does not make up foryears of filth and neglect, with problems caused by alcohol, drugs and prostution. “Why aren’t the police doing something? Jávea Park was described in VERY unfavourable terms, with rats rinning wild and cars being burned. “It’s NOT a new problem, we’ve been living with it for 25 years.” The police claim that they do patrol the area - disproportionaly in many cases - because they recognise the unique problems. There are 4 or 5 bars but only 1 has a pub licence and the others should close their doors by midnight. As regards the general state of the area, there is nothing the Townhall can do as it is privately owned. Either both sides (owners and tenants) in Jávea Park can get together and clean the area, or alternatively - you can donate the ‘common’ land to the Townhall for the Townhall to maintain, but the Townhall can do nothing on private property. I am grateful to Kacie for attending the meeting on my behalf, and taking notes (the meeting is in Valenciano) so that I could compile this report. CR.

LI is the official constituency for overseas British Labour Party members. We welcome new recruits and supporters. Meetings are held at L’Ancora Tennis Club in Jávea on the second Tuesday of each month and social events take place along the Costa Blanca.

DUNKIRK 70th - they got it all wrong

No doubt like me you sat and watched the 70th anniversary of the D-Day Landing, like millions of others did? We missed the point of what the celebration was all about? At 14.50 CET they paraded out 17 vets of WW11 and sat them in a row in front of all those EVEN MORE VIPs who were very fortunate to be sheltering under a canopy that must have cost hundreds of thousands of Euros. Perhaps the vets were thinking that even the blazing sun of 2014 was better than the waves. wind, cold and enemy fire of 1944? And there the vets sat . . . as the stupid pair of commentators on BBC TV as 1. It’s a very very hot day and 2. They are enjoying soaking up the sunshine.

And there they sat and sat waiting for the arrival in limousines of heads of State of 19 Nations, including 3 generations of our own Royal family. Not one of these dignitaries showed any visible sign of compassion or guilt that these men had been sat in the sunshine without cover. It wasn't until 15.25 Cebtral Eyropean Time, that some

condescending nerd found 8 umbrellas so these 17 old boys could have some shade. The roles should have been reversed with the so called VIPs waiting for the old boys to arrive in Limos. The 70th Anniversary organisers should hang their heads in shame at the way these 17 vets were treated but will any of the dignitaries loo]se any sleep over it? Like hell they will. Continued from page 17

We held healing campaigns with Pastor George Canty from Blackburn, concerts and coffee mornings to raise money for Adopt-a-Child and sent the money to build two Churches in Chile under the leadership of Pastor Patricio in the poor areas of Concepción. Clive and I were able to travel to Chile for two weeks and visit the Pastors and the new Churches. The mini-market operated for many years and we had many visitors, not only to buy goods and have a cup of tea, but who took the opportunity to talk over problems, both spiritual and practical with Clive who had a help table in one of the corners.

Our main outreach as a Church into the Spanish community has been our involvement with "La Palabra para Hoy" (The Word for Today), a book of daily encouragement written by Bob and Debbie Gass who currently live in the USA, but are both originally from Northern Ireland. Clive and I accepted responsibility for production of the Spanish version 17 years ago after a visit to the UK. For the first 11 years the 64 page booklet which is published every three months was printed by Clive and Peter our son, and the flat sheets collated and made into booklets by me. We started printing a few thousand and for the first couple of years some of the Church congregation became involved with the collating as we hadn't a machine to do it. A huge table was erected in the Oasis Centre and all the pages laid out in the correct order. The volunteers used to march round and round the table collating the pages into piles of completed books which Clive put through a folding and stapling machine. JeannieB was responsible for keeping us all supplied with cups of tea, sandwiches and cakes. I always had the CD playing while people marched, and if they started to slow down, I would change the music to a faster tempo, to get them marching more quickly. Only joking of course! The packing and dispatching of the completed books has always been my responsibility but the day-to-day administration and managing the donations from readers has always been Clive’s responsibility. We have had different translators over the years and we are more than happy with the excellent job that is being done by our present translator Inma in London. The Church volunteers were more than happy a couple of years later, to give up their walk round the table collating when Clive bought me an electric collating machine for my birthday!!! He is a real romantic! The numbers of copies printed increased each year and about 5 years

ago because of the increased numbers and because Clive felt we should produce a more up-market product to keep in line with other language versions produced by other countries, Printing of Palabra was put out to Printerman in Madrid, who received the finished artwork one day and within a week, 15,000 copies were on their way by lorry to our premises for shipping to our 2,700 addresses all over the world. Some have one copy, some two, some three and so on. When various organisations started to collect clothes and bedding to send to the war zones of Bosnia, we were asked what we were going to do as a Church. A dentist in Jávea loaned us a massive empty local to collect and store items ready to send abroad and the Mayor at the time, Juan Moragues connected water to the premises free of charge. When we had loads of boxes to move, Skeltons Removals moved the boxes by lorry to an appointed location where it was all sent by other lorries overseas. The people of Jávea have always been very generous, both the Spanish and English and we had boxes and boxes of clothes, all sorted into men, women and children's, summer and winter clothes, all washed and ironed and folded neatly into the boxes. Our little team of volunteers were happy to spend many hours each week laundering and packing. The Church was also very involved when Jávea became involved (with other towns on the Costa Blanca), to make up shoe boxes to send to the war zones. I remember we collected dozens of them from the Lady Elizabeth School and Xabia International College, the children really took the appeal on board. Each shoe box contained useful items for one of the following, men, women, boy, girl and baby. We all had such fun filling the boxes.

A few years later we had a lorry travel from Kosovo with two lads on board from an organisation called "My Neighbour", to collect food, clothes and oranges from us to take back to their country which was at war. The local businesses were very generous and made donations of money rather than food, so we were able to take the lads to the warehouse where they could choose their own food to take back. We didn't know what food was suitable. The lads loved Jávea and were fascinated to see that oranges grow on trees. I don't know how many photos we took of them by the orange trees. They stayed with us for a week and when it was time for them to drive the lorry back we had a job to persuade them to go. I think the thought of returning to the war zone after the tranquility of Jávea was hard for them.

Jávea Jeard

Four years ago, Clive felt we had outlived our time in the Port area of Jávea at the Oasis Centre. For the next year he looked at several premises and finally ended up at our new premises in the town. They were spacious, almost twice the size of the Oasis Centre in the Port, and space for a Sunday School upstairs. The rent when we took the premises was 1,000 euros a month which we could afford but during the first 9 months, some of our congregation went back to the UK because they couldn't manage on their own any more and others left for other reasons. The crisis in Spain was getting worse, the incomes of members of the Church was reduced, which obviously had an effect on the offerings. We knew that we could no longer afford the 1,000 euros a month rent so started very reluctantly to look for cheaper premises. We found some further up the road, much smaller but only 500 euros a month. Clive asked Carmen our interpreter to ring our landlord and tell him that although we had been very happy in the premises, we could no longer afford the 1,000 euros a month so were moving out at the end of the yearly contract. The landlord was very sympathetic and asked Carmen where we were moving to and what rent we would be paying. Carmen told him that we would be moving up the road and that the rent was 500 euros a month. He immediately said that we had been such good tenants and he didn't want to lose us, so he (and his brother) were prepared to drop their rent to 500 euros a month until things got better. Hallelujah, what an answer to prayer.. Sixteen months ago, after three suicides in Jávea in one week, Clive felt God telling him that the Church needs to be back in the community. The CopiShop that Clive and I established with Peter our son over 10 years ago in the Port, ceased trading in January of last year. The CopiShop had been sold to new owners when Peter left Spain to move to Thailand six years ago. Clive felt God was telling him to open new premises in

ROUNDABOUT GETS A ‘Blue Bottle’ MAkEOVER

Jávea’s Departments of Public Works and Services has carried out work to improve the roundabout (at Barclay’s Bank) that serves the flow of traffic between the end of the carretera del Pla where it joins carretera de Cansalades. This temporary roundabout was created for safety reasons almost ten years ago using bollards, as the final construction was dependent on finance from property developments on each corner, which are still paralysed. The Townhall decided therefore to carry out minor works to provide more security and improve the image of the area. A small curb has been built surrounding the central part of the roundabout, which houses the unusual ‘Chorisia speciosa’ tree, and filled with small blue crystals made from recycled glass bottles. These have been treated so

they do not lose colour over time. This novel material also reduces the maintenance costs of the roundabout. Councillor Doris Courselles (PSOE) explained: The improvement to this roundabout was my idea. Readers might be unaware that we cannot build a proper one in its place as the land it stands on is the responsibility of 4 PAIs (the 4 Urbanizations at the corners) so I decided to improve it without doing anything PERMANENT.

June/July 2014, Nº 14 Page 21

Camacho Recycling, the Company which deals with bottle collection (in the green containers) for ECOVIDRIO is recycling the different glass and was able to bring us 16 tons of the blue one. So... I was killing two birds with one stone (I think that is what you say in English?) showing the importance of recycling and changing the view of this terrible crossing at a VERY cheap price. The comments I have received have all been very positive. Of course, the colour I chose might not please EVERYBODY but........ everybody must admit that it is O.R.I.G.I.N.A.L. The problem is (YES, THERE IS ALWAYS ONE!) that people are already stealing the glass stones!!!

INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL

This year’s festival from June 26th to 28th welcomes Greece, Austria, Turkey, Cuba and Mexico to the previous promoting countries. Again located in Avenida Augusta, each country will promote its culture as well as its food and culinery expertise. Association President Raul de Lope, working with his multiculturism committee since last September, are exploring new avenues of entertainment, with impersonator Luis Miguel, the jazz of Enric Peidro and dancers from groups like Black Glitter, Rain & Crisis, Strickland and regional dancers from the Phillipines. There will be a mobile disco and a workshop where youngsters can learn how to make pizza. Exhibitors’ tents, food and entertainment programme will begin each evening at 6pm but the major entertainment will not commence until 8pm. Casa de Andalucia, the Balcon Al Mar volunteer firefighters and Jávea’s own Tourism and Publicity Department will be showing local residents how they promote Jávea in other countries and tourism events. Mayor, Jose Chulvi, highlighted how the Festival represents the 80 nationalities that have a peaceful and enriching coexistance, to better understand our neighbours.

Department of Planning of the City of Jávea initiates public participation process for the Study of Landscape General Urban Plan. The first was planned in the city centre (Casa de Cultura) on 3rd and 4th June at 8pm; then moved to the library in the Port on 17th and 18th June, also at 8pm, and finally held at the public school Arenal on the 1st and 2nd July, at the same time . The latter meetings are aimed at people with language problems, with translation into English, French and German. These meetings, called visual preferences workshops begin with an informative presentation by the team that wrote the General Plan, in which the procedure for renewal of urban planning is explained. As explained by the Town Planning Councillor, Pere Sapena, the will of the executive is "maximum participation" and therefore, in addition to these appointments for those who need advice, he will make available to the public all information on the website, which also will be the three questionnaires (on territorial model, views and landscape) that can be completed from your computer or a smartphone, albeit associated with a name and ID to avoid having people make repeated responses. These forms can also be delivered in person at the headquarters of Urban Planning carrer d' Avall municipal office which also will be on display to the public for three months, all the documentation on the study of landscape integration and future General Plan. In addition, the Mayor added, Urbanism is open to more talks to groups or individual ‘stakeholders’ during these three months. And both Sapena and Mayor José Chulvi, have agreed in their interest to achieve maximum participation in this "transcendental" phase of the review of planning with as many people as possible expressing their wishes and fears.

Bobby (nephew) and Sammy (Uncle) Abraham, from Ireland, didn’t hesitate when asked if they would sing and play for the Anniversary Celebration of Jávea Evangelical Church, Oasis Help Centre and Jávea Jeard. Sadly, on their arrival, Sammy was so ill that he was unable to sing or play

the drums, and it was feared by tour organisers Tony and Dorothy Ruddy from Calpe, that Sammy had suffered a stroke during the journey to Jávea. Tony was quick to ‘practice what he preaches’ and gathered the volunteers who were arranging seating and food, and put their l\hands on Sammy and prayed for God’s healing. Sammy had agreed not to perform, and when he arrived at the Oasis Centre, he looked as though he had missed the turn for the mortuary. He was sat in a comfortable chair with his feet raised, and it wasn’t long before he was thanking God and interjecting his singing comments alongside Bobby on the guitar. By the end of the event, he seemed perfectly recovered. Bobby and Sammy flew back the following morning to Belfast, where Sammy was taken to A&E as a precaution. We were told from the hospital that Sammy had a ‘high blood count’ but thank God for his visit, and that he was able to get back to his home, family and church. All the food (teapots and cake stands as well) was supplied - without charge - by Ann Martin’s Little Cake Shop in Benitachell. When asked “why” Ann explained “The Oasis Centre has been so supportive of everything I have attempted to do for the community, that it never occurred to me that I should not ‘pass it on’ and help them.” Everyone present, including visitors from Torrevieja and Slough, expressed the hope that Sammy and Bobby would come back to entertain us again.

Established retail shop, specialising in Inkjet Cartridges, Cartridge Refills, Laser Toners, Paper & Stationery. Also offering a range of printing services, as well as Internet access. The business has a very large number of regular customers and is still continually attracting new ones. The business is offered as a going concern, complete with all equipment, stock at valuation and all business contacts & suppliers. Full training is included and will be provided to the new owner. The shop has a very low rent and low overheads. Turnover & nett profit figures will be given to any genuinely interested parties upon application, however the buyers investment should easily be recouped in the first year.

Jávea Jeard Jávea and Euro Elections

Only 35.28% of voters (5,540) left their Jávea homes to cast their votes in the Euro Parliament elections. 63.72% didn’t or couldn’t be bothered to vote. Of course by the time the Brits went to the Polling Booths in Jávea they knew UKIP had run the other UK parties into ‘also’rans’. Locally, the result was

and it cannot have pleased Jávea Mayor, Jose Chulvi that PP, the party that refused to amend or repeal the LRAU Land Grab Law, polled more than 5% more votes than PSOE. European Spring - the party from nowhere - quickly (like UKIP in the UK) caused people to realise that the Ballot Box was producing unexpected

results, and will be causing major rethinks before next May’s local elections. How could a party that existed only in the dreams and ambitions of people who disliked the simple PP/PSOE choice, poll more than 1/3rd of the party in government in Jávea. It was (comparatively) easy for UKIP to get so much support for ‘coming out of Europe’, but they will not find it easy to produce a Manifesto by next May that will set-out their policy on Education Health Social Security Defence (and immigration) to name but a few. What choices will Jávea have next year? Of course PP and PSOE will still be offering more of yesterday, but what about tomorrow? Xabia Democratica were last time’s sucess story, and before that it was Nueva Jávea and Tony Cabban and a bank of civic worthies. The only way an Independent group will WIN control of Javea is if they fight as individuals but declare their itent to form a united team.

Received from Tina Stovall Leiner. An Elementary School Teacher had twenty-six students in her 3M's class. She presented each child in her classroom with the 1st half of a wellknown proverb and asked them to come up with the remainder of the proverb. It's hard to believe these were actually done by first graders. Their insight may surprise you. While reading, keep in mind that these are first-graders, 6-yearolds, because the last one is a classic!

1. Don't change horses until they stop running. 2. Strike while the bug is close. 3. It's always darkest before Daylight Saving Time. 4. Never underestimate the power of termites. 5. You can lead a horse to water but how? 6. Don't bite the hand that looks dirty. 7. No news is impossible. 8. A miss is as good as a Mr. 9. You can't teach an old dog new math. 10. If you lie down with dogs, you'll stink in the morning. 11. Love all, trust me. 12. The pen is mightier than the pigs. 13. An idle mind is the best way to relax. 14. Where there's smoke there's pollution. 15. Happy the bride who gets all the presents. 16. A penny saved is not much. 17. Two's company, three's the Musketeers. 18. Don't put off till tomorrow what you put on to go to bed. 19. Laugh and the whole world laughs with you, cry and you have to blow your nose. 20.There are none so blind as Stevie Wonder. 21. 24. When the blind lead the blind get out of the way. 25. A bird in the hand is going to poop on you. And the WINNER and last one! 26. Better late than pregnant. --------- -In George Washington's days, there were no cameras. One's image was either sculpted or painted. Some paintings of George Washington showed him standing behind a desk with one arm behind his back while others showed both legs and both arms. Prices charged by painters were not based on how many people were to be painted, but by how many limbs were to be painted. Arms and legs are 'limbs', therefore painting them would cost the buyer more. Hence the expression, 'Okay, but it'll cost you an arm and a leg.' (Artists know hands and arms are more difficult to paint) --------- -As incredible as it sounds, men and women took baths only twice a year (May and October) Women kept their hair covered, while men shaved their heads (because of lice and bugs) and wore wigs. Wealthy men could afford good wigs made from wool. They couldn't wash the wigs, so to clean them they would carve out a loaf of bread, put the wig in the shell, and bake it for 30 minutes. The heat would make the wig big and fluffy, hence the term 'big wig' Today we often use the term 'here comes the Big Wig because someone appears to be or is powerful and wealthy. --------- -In the late 1700s, many houses consisted of a large room with only one chair. Commonly, a long wide board folded down from the wall, and was used for dining. The 'head of the household' always sat in the chair while everyone else ate sitting on the floor. Occasionally a guest, who was usually a man, would be invited to sit in this chair during a meal. To sit in the chair meant you were important and in charge. They called the one sitting in the chair the 'chair man.' Today in business, we use the expression or title 'Chairman' or 'Chairman of the Board'. --------- -Personal hygiene left much room for improvement.. As a result, many women and men had developed acne scars by adulthood. The women would spread bee's wax over their facial skin to smooth out their complexions. When they were speaking to each other, if a woman began to stare at another woman's face she was told, 'mind your own bee's wax.' Should the woman smile, the wax would crack, hence the term 'crack a smile'. In addition, when they sat too close to the fire, the wax would melt . .. . Therefore, the expression 'losing face’.

Continued from page 20 the Port to be used principally as a help and advice centre. So the new Oasis Centre was established very close to the former CopiShop. Other services on offer from the Centre are greeting cards, all at 1 euro, photocopying, general printing (Clive and I already had printing machines and photocopier in storage so there was no need to buy new). We also book Beniconect journeys to Alicante airport, mobile telephone top-ups and many other services. The project is an outreach of the Church and has been very successful. We have been encouraged at the number of people who have visited us for advice.

Ten months ago, we felt that God was directing us to move our Sunday morning Service and Bible study from the town premises to the new Oasis Centre for the summer months as it was much easier to explain to people where the Church meeting was held each week. We did it initially as an experiment and continued to keep our premises in the town which the Spanish Church led by Pastor Marcos Sanz was using. It was a success. People like Anne and Joy, who had been loyal supporters when we were in the first Port premises, but who found the new town premises impossible to attend because of the steps, started to attend again. during the week at the Oasis Centre also started to come so when the summer months were over, we continued meeting at the Port. Our Sunday morning service with Holy Communion is at 11am and everyone is welcome. Tea, coffee and biscuits are served afterwards. The Oasis Centre is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 2pm. Why not drop in one morning to have a chat over a cup of tea? We look forward to meeting you.

THANK YOU

The OASIS CENTRE has been open for little more than a year, but public support has been huge. There has been a steady stream of people, some making purchases and others taking the opportunity for a sit down and chat. It was a very busy December (cards and calendars) and new services are being sought to make 2014 and 2015 years that meet even more public need. We’ve also been encouraged by the number of people who have begun coming on a Sunday - as well to join us in the 11am service of Thanksgiving. Why not join us - free refreshments afterwards?

More public Works projects worth a million €uros get approval

Jávea Jeard

MORE SPANISH LESSONS OFFERED

Page 26 June/July 2014, Nº 14

Jávea’s Governing Board has unlocked three more major projects that will make a municipal investment of around one million euros, from the treasury surplus last year. First has approved the technical project for the development of a section of the street Vicenza, which will involve the demolition of a house in ruins

(known as Villa Sarita) which has been purchased from the owners. Demolition of the property will allow Calle Vicenza to connect with the Montañar, a project that will involve an investment of 228,500 euros.

Another project approved (again) is development of a public square in the Port, at the side of steps leading to the church, in Admiral Pescadors Bastarreche (where there was an old barracks of the Civil Guard, which was demolished in 2007).

It will become a space overlooking the bay and Grava beach for public use with furniture and trees. The budget for this work is 120,000 euros.

The third major project to be approved is one of the most complex urban problems assumed by the Corporation; termination of the Via Augusta, as various sections were executed by

different promoters and some companies have ceased to exist, leaving unfinished responsibilities. The City Council has decided to redevelop the section between the junction with Calle Venecia and IES Issue 1, a project that will cost nearly 700,000 euros and that will change the sidewalks, street lighting and create green areas. Both the Mayor, José Chulvi, and council works councillor, Paco Torres, have indicated that implementation of these works will not begin until later this year (in no case during the summer) as the authorised procedure taken on June 9th opens the first step in the tendering process. The Mayor said it is very important to finally unlock these three projects as approved, and that it will provide the Duanes neighbours with a new public square for their enjoyment, and they will be able to see the open sea from Calle Vicenza, something pending for more than 10 years, and finally, enhance the overall image and the safety of the Via Augusta area.

There are occasions when Scallops are willing to ‘contra’ the FREE bottle of wine with chosen meals, but you MUST say you DO NOT WANT the wine when you order your meals. We ate with a family on a limited budget, who were surprised by the 20€ unexpected drinks bill, and 6 bottles of wine they did not order. Everyone was happy with the deal in the end. Sadly, the 1/2 price Pepsi is not on offer every day, you need to ask or look at the offers.

If you have Scallops vouchers you are unable to use, you can leave them in the box outside the OASIS CENTRE (in C/. Toni Llido, at the rear of La Caixa bank) and we will see that their value is not wasted. It costs you nothing to give away what you cannot use.

Alicante Diputación is offering classroom and online Spanish tuition. Registration is free and will be carried out in strict order of receipt of the registration forms. Registration is open until July 6. More information from the Townhall Help Desk above CLOT parking, thanks to the initiative of Councillor Oscar Anton. The on-line option is possible with software support in English, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Polish, Russian, Norwegian, Thai, Slovenian, Turkish, Korean, Arabic, Czech or Hungarian. It allows the student to organise the schedule to suit themselves, and customise the course depending on their interests and the speed they wish to advance. During the first month students are required to carry out a minimum of 10 hours of online course work In order to receive certification from the course, it will require a minimum of 50 hours of learning in total. The other option is to attend 44 classroom hours of instruction that will be taught in the facilities of the county agencies of the Provincial Council in Denia ( Tuesdays and Thursdays from 09.00 to 11.00 hours and from 19.00 until 21.00 hours). Bob Yareham and Football

Continued from page 16 strength…..then it will get nowhere,” in a transparent reference with which he clearly intended to identify himself with the philosophies implicit in both William Morris’s ‘News from Nowhere’ and Thomas More’s ‘Utopia’ (which means ‘nowhere’ in Greek, as Capello would undoubtedly have known, being Italian). Capello’s well-known adage: “you demonstrate your attachment on the pitch”, might superficially be thought to refer to a player’s attachment to his club or his salary, but to anyone knowledgeable of the tenets of Zen or the songs of Van Morrisson, it is a clear reference to the concept of nonattachment to the material world of illusion, the goal of any self-respecting Zen master or midfield player. (The latter often refer to this concept as ‘onetouch football’).

Although essentially a classicist, Capello has dabbled in modern philosophy. However, he tends to have little time for Einstein, dismissing him with a curt: “having fun passes and is relative.”

Of course British managers, like British people in general, have always known that simplicity is genius, and for this reason the Football Association had always chosen simple managers before the advent of the bespectacled Swede. Great Britons like Ron Atkinson have seen us in good stead when times were hard by simplifying complex concepts about time and relativity: "I just wanted to give my players some technical advice. I told them the game had started."

Atkinson of course was capable of being enigmatic when necessary, especially when dealing with the nature of the Supreme Being, or ‘the ref’ as football managers refer to him in their own special code. As he once informed the press, in an outbreak of uncharacteristic agnosticism: “I never comment on referees and I'm not going to break the habit of a lifetime for that prat.”

But perhaps only a Scottish manager could ever really understand the full meaning of Zen, even though this mastery is often misinterpreted as dourness. When Gordon Strachan was asked by a reporter for a quick word, he answered: "velocity", and walked off into the annals of philosophical history.
