Homes were threated by fire during lunchtime on 1st October in the Montes Jávea urbanisation in a forest fire extinguished by the combined dedication of local police, regional fire crews and the Guardia Civil.
The blaze was centred in an area around an electricity pylon in Calle Passarell, but the cause was not immediately obvious. The alarm was raised at 13.45 when Jávea air temperature was 30º and a Poniente (west) wind was blowing. On arrival, police evacuated homes in Pic Blau, Cavallet y Roncadell as a precaution. A forward command post was installed on the terrace of a house in Calle Passarell, occupied by tourists on holiday, whom the security department want to thank for their collaboration and help. Local police, Civil Guard, Seprona and voluntary bodies like the Balcon al Mar Fire Fighters, Civil Defense and Red Cross, and firefighters from Denia and Benidorm, forestry brigades, and
representatives from Jávea council were all at the scene. Environment councillor, Doris Courcelles, was soon involved, keeping Safety Councillor Juan Ortolá informed. AMJASA made extra water pressure available and local 4x4 owners were mobilised. A small aircraft dropping fire extinguishing powder was assisted by 3 helicopters. By 5pm the blaze was under control. Juan Ortola praised the Balcon Al Mar immediate response firefighter team and local residents who opened their homes and provided water from their swimming pools so the fire could be extinguished with the minimum of delay. Thanks to the offer of help from Kacey, I hope to be able to give much more detailed information from the monthly meeting of Jávea Councillors. No, I’ve not had a brain transplant (bringing a sudden understanding of Valencian), but with the help of Kacey - who does understand the ‘local lingo’ - I hope you’ll get a fresh ‘insight’ into Jávea accountability.
The meeting on Thursday 29th August began with José Chulvi, the Mayor, declaring the meeting open, even though not all Councillors had arrived. He then made a very surprising announcement, referring to a letter he had written to every Councillor, expressing his concern that information had been ‘shared’ with someone not authorised to see it. To Jávea Jeard this is a disturbing relevation. As a principal we believe that ALL matters affecting voters should be in the ‘public domain’ - but we can recognise that there are matters that should NOT be publicised, if they may affect current negotiations. Of course, I could have asked the Mayor for an explanation, but that may well have caused him to break his own confidentiality rules - so I didn’t, but it does confirm what a PP Councillor said when asked if they would help us: “The business of the Council is secret.” The Alcalde did explain during the meeting that Councillors need to study ‘certain files’ to obtain information on which to base the way they vote on any particular issue. Good decisions cannot be made in the absence of information and the Mayor said he believed more information should be available to voters via the website, which will be improved. In a very public reprimand, the Mayor concluded with “The person who did it - knows who they are!” Point 1 Decisions made by the Mayor during the previous month were all approved.
Point 2 I was surprised to hear Councillors publicly complaining about the way the Port Loreto Fiestas had been organised, as if they didn’t know - and hadn’t approved the creation of a huge ‘no go’ area. “More thought must go into earlier announcements and signs so that people coming to enjoy the fiesta will not have to park so far away that they prefer to go back home. “The fiesta must be organised with less disruption, like the San Juan fiesta in June.” (To be fair, the town fiesta does benefit from the Plaza de Constitucion and Plaza de Convento, which concentrate events away from public roads. “There is bad feeling among visitors that the Town and Port fiestas seem to fill the Summer with unnecessary noise, fireworks, blunderbuss emissions and traffic jams, at the peak time for local businesses, tourists (and residents) and made to feel unwelcome” was a remark I heard afterwards. Eleven ‘staged’ events in 8 days is excessive and creates harm to the local economy. The budget for the Loreto fiesta had not been cut from previous years, probably because the money raised by members of the ‘peñas’, rather than looking for a Town Hall ‘handout’. The Councillor for Fiestas said he was unaware of the extent of complaints.

Point 6 unanimously approved the 2012 Budget, as was the Budget for the second quarter of 2013.
Point 8 referred to land in Tarraula that had been ‘taken’ by a neighbour and it was ordered to be vacated within 15 days.
Point 9 referred to the recognition by the Town Hall of those who had made an exceptional contribution to Jávea. Often there is a ‘man’ and a ‘woman’ but this year the man was Paco Reus BoydSwan (a local teacher whose parents were British) and the ISVH in Balcon Al Mar which was created as a selfhelp group for BAM residents but has expanded its fundraising activities (not only to the Balcon Al Mar Firefighters) but to other Jávea

After the meeting I asked Antonio Torres (a friend for many years) about his political affiliation. He was not a member of ‘Compromis’ and neither was he a member of the ‘Mixta’ group, but remained a member of ‘BLOCCentristas’ from which former Alcalde, Eduardo Monfort, had resigned. Another meeting over and we all went out to Plaza Iglesia (many to have a smoke) and others to say what they hadn’t said in the meeting. That’s a (brief) report of the meeting. Operating beyond the boundaries of the U.K., on the Continent of Europe means we are attempting to receive signals that really are the 'spillage' from the signals directed at the target area U.K. & N.I. It follows therefore that the further away we are from the target area,the signals continually fall off in strength,bearing in mind that the signals start in life from the transponders floating in space at the equivalent of a 100 Watt bulb (hard to believe!) In addition to this, where we are based on this Easterly side of Spain we find not only are our received signals very weak in general terms, but close examination proves they vary wildly in actual comparisons of signal strength!
This is the greatest problem facing the installer and the only way is to ensure that you have test equipment available that can extract the signal details of any specific signal, be it high band or low band or vertical or horizontal polarity. In addition it is a requirement that it is also possible that it can 'Analyse' the whole of the 'Spectrum', which is vital in ensuring the best possible results for the client. When test equipment of poor specification is used (often the installer is not involved in equipment purchase as his boss makes the decision!) we always have taken the view that quality wins out in the end, and investing in top quality test equipment is a very wise investment - not only preventing waste of time looking to improve pictures where there is insufficient signal - but paying dividends in client satisfaction.
It is only after locating the correct transponders and trimming for results on stronger stations, that the real alignment begins. First, we use the spectrum analyser and take note of the weakest signals and then identify them. After this we take note of the very weakest signals and, then concentrate on maximising these signals using first the satellite dish settings and then the L.N.B. focal and screw settings.
We then repeat the operation to squeeze as much signal as possible and once the signals match our template, we take note and then check out all the stations across the band. Anyone who is experiencing disappointing results, well below what was expected, can always call on us for a second opinion after we have completed testing their installation at a very modest charge.
The Future?
Eventually 2E will be in place at 28.2 degrees SSE and then we feel that we can with confidence resolve any problems in our area of operation. Both Peter and I have been very busy testing several products that will offer increased performance to many types of equipment installed at the moment. We both are qualified, having spent our careers in electronics and of course this is backed up by a range of City & Guilds to degree level - which we think beats all those 'Fancy Advertisements'!

A Pastor’s Point of View

Those who knew me when I came to live in Spain in 1985, will know that I never wanted to be a Pastor. Even before we moved from the UK, on our search for somewhere to retire, we attended the church of Pastors Leslie and Brenda Lyons, held in the home of Bryce and Christine Winter in Jesus Pobre. Once here, for more than 6 years I assisted Pastor Leslie, first as ‘the warm-up-man’ in the services in Calpe (10.30am), Jávea (12 noon) and Benidorm (6pm) on a Sunday and the church in Torrevieja, at Hotel Fontana, at 5pm on alternate Tuesdays. It was a priviledge to work alongside Pastor Leslie, whom I still believe was one of the most adept evangelists I have met. It was rare for hom to preach and not see the lives changed of those who listened. It doesn´t surprise me, at all, that he has responsibility for evangelical services among Brits in the Fontacalent prison. It was a Sunday morning like any other, driving to Calpe from Jávea for the 10.30 service, coffee at Bar Frau in Benissa and in Jávea for 12 noon, when I encouraged those in the congregation to expect something NEW from God, after which Pastor Leslie would preach. It was whilst he was speaking, that my eyes were drawn to words on a page of my Bible, that seemed to stand out from those that surrounded the verse in 1 Peter 5:2 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; And that was it! I knew that, instead of my supporting the 60 minute visit of Pastor Lyons on a Sunday, God had called me to a 24/7 ministry here in Jávea resulting, 6 months later with the opening of Jávea Evangelical Church, which celebrated its 21st Anniversary earlier this year. During those years I have been supported by Ann, my wife, as well as Peter (our son) but to a much greater extent by God, who saw in me a potential I couldn’t imagine for myself. There have

been ‘peaks’ and ‘valleys’ (probably in equal number) but the highlight of every week has been the Sunday morning service with Holy Communion, where I continue to ‘present Christ - and Him crucified’ as Leslie taught me. In those 21 years, hundreds have responded when hearing that Jesus Christ was sent by God to suffer the punishment for our wrongdoing, and accepted the offer of God’s forgiveness, that ensured them Life Eternal with God - and goodness - in heaven, but more than half have

Advice from a selfemployed husband

It is important for men to remember that, as women grow older, it becomes harder for them to maintain the same quality of housekeeping as when they were younger. When this becomes apparent, try not to yell at them. Some are oversensitive, and there's nothing worse than an over sensitive woman.
My name is Ron. Let me relate how I handled this situation with my wife, Annie. When I became self employed a few years ago and the shorter work hours that went with it, to fill in my day I took up golf. It soon became necessary for Annie to get a full-time job, along with her part-time job, both for extra income and for the health benefits that we needed.
Shortly after she started working the extra job, I noticed she was beginning to show her age. I usually get home from the golf club about the same time she gets home from work
Although she knows how hungry I am, she almost always says she has to rest for half an hour or so before she starts dinner. I don't yell at her. Instead, I tell her to take her time and just wake me when she gets dinner on the table.
I generally have lunch in 'The Grill' at the golf club, so eating out is not an option for us in the evening. I'm ready for some home-cooked food when I walk through that door.
She used to do the dishes as soon as we finished eating but now it's not unusual for them to sit on the table for several hours after dinner.
I do what I can by diplomatically reminding her several times each evening that they won't clean themselves. I know she really appreciates this, as it does seem to motivate her to get them done before she goes to bed..
Another symptom of ageing is complaining, I think, for example, she will say that it is difficult for her to find time to pay the monthly bills during her lunch hour, but chaps, we take them for better or worse, so I just smile and offer encouragement. I tell her to stretch it out over two, or even three days. That way, she won't have to rush so much. I also remind her that missing lunch

completely now and then would help her figure. I like to think tact is one of my strong points.
When doing simple jobs, she seems to think she needs more rest periods. She had to take a break when she was only half-finished mowing the lawn. I tried not to make a scene. I'm a fair man.
I told her to fix herself a nice, big, cold glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, and just relax for a while. And, as long as she is making one for herself, she might as well make one for me too.
I know that I probably look like a saint in the way I support Annie. I'm not saying that showing this much patience and consideration is easy. Many men would find it difficult if not impossible. Nobody knows better than I do how frustrating women get as they get older. However, men, even if you just use a little more tact and less criticism of your ageing wife as a result of reading this article, I will consider that writing it was well worthwhile. After all, we are put on this earth to help each other.
Ron died suddenly of a perforated rectum after publishing this letter. The police report says he was found with a Calloway extra-long 50inch Big Bertha Driver II golf club jammed up his rear end, with barely 5 inches of grip showing. A sledge hammer was laying nearby. His wife Annie, was arrested and charged with murder. The minister gave his Sunday morning service, as usual, but this particular Sunday, it was considerably longer than normal. Later, at the door, shaking hands with parishioners as they moved out, one man said, "Your sermon, Pastor, was simply wonderful - so invigorating and inspiring and refreshing."
The minister of course, broke out in a big smile, only to hear the man add, "Why I felt like a new man when I woke up!"

A Pastor’s duties Since opening the OASIS Help Centre - as my church’s response to 3 local suicides in 10 days - the lives of Ann and I (and Peter) have been ‘ruled’ by being at the Help Centre from 10am till 2pm, 6 days a week. Sunday is the morning service and we have seen an encouraging flow of people on a Sunday, who we first met when they came to the Centre probably to buy greetings cards, book Beniconnect, or keep up with the TV programmes. This year I’ve been booked for around 30 marriage ceremonies, but a few have been cancelled by the effect of the ‘crisis’ - and I am pleased there is no reduction in the numbers of people who want to marry here.

We always appreciate readers who take time to write, and recently received this eMail: Dear sir I'm curious as to why I have to pay for a copy of Javea Jeard in Iceland in Javea when it's free everywhere else that's not right or fair, surely? The eMail was from Lynn Cobb, so I replied: Firstly Lynn, you write "why I have to pay for a copy of Javea Jeard in Iceland?' as if it is obligatory. Javea Jeard is no different to any other product offered for sale, the choice is yours, to buy if you think it looks value for money, and to leave it on the shelf if it doesn't. What does concern me greatly though, is your statement that it is "free everywhere else". Could you give me a list of the "everywhere else" premises where it is offered without payment, and any additional information regarding dates and quantities, as that is against our publishing policy - which you rightly identify as "right and fair"? Not having received a reply from Lynn, and reading on Facebook that her eMail account had been ‘hacked’ I resent my response 7 days later, but still no reply. When I printed out my monthly copy of Jávea Grapevine - that once was a ‘hold in your hand’ magazine (like this) but now has restricted access to people with computers and internet - I read the editorial from Gaile Griffin Peers that referred to Lynn Cobb as: “... the brilliant supportive Jávea Grapevine Group on Facebook that is “adminned” by Lynn Cobb ...” Lynn is also the author of the monthly Grapevine “I want to Speak Spanish” article and arranges Spanish lessons for students, meeting in local bars. Lynn is also an adviser to Jávea’s Mayor, José Chulvi. I leave you - the reader - to ask yourself why would Lynn make such accusations, and who else has she told who might even believe it was true? Meanwhile, I wait for her to send me the list of ‘everywhere else’ so that I can investigate. CR
Montañar beach promenade proposals fail to impress

Jávea Deputy Mayor and leader of Xabia Democratica party, Oscar Anton Izquierdo, published the illustration alongside, on his Facebook page on September 20th. We asked him for a copy so we could enlarge (and explain) it in the window of Oasis Help Centre in the Port, but he’s not sent it to us. A source close to XD told us “THERE IS NO PROJECT” - just various proposals - some of which have been forwarded to the Department of Coasts for approval - and funding. No funding will mean no change from the existing 2-way motor traffic, with pavement incorporating a cycle lane.
Justification for Change Councillors seem prepared to sacrifice a traffic movement that works well for 9 or 10 months in every year. Were it not for the Chiringuitos (Beach Bars) on the Eastern side of the road, between traffic and the sea, there would be no need for change. The beach bars generate income for the Town Hall from entrepreneurs who speculate how much turnover (profit) they can generate over 15 Summer months in 5 years (nominally June 15th to September 15th) and submit their ‘Tender’ stating the amount they are prepared to offer for a 5-year concession, supported by a written project itemising which of the offered plots they want, and explaining the facilities they would provide. A Town Hall committee then assesses each proposal, judging whether the various criteria have been met, and finally looking at the amount of money offered. If there are no failures with the written Project, the bidder offering most money for a 5-year concession wins the spot. There can be fierce rivalvy, with a huge roadside poster on the Gata road, a few years ago, advising tourists Not to use one of the bars because it was run by
a man who was Independent of the others.
The problems
Pedestrians seem to prefer to walk (and jog) along the Eastern (sea) side of the road, despite there being a wide (and should-be-safer) pavement on the other side of the road. Those cyclists (skete-boarders, roller skaters and scooter riders) who travel along the Western side, seem to prefer to use the pavement, rather than the cycle track. And the Municipal Police drive up and down the Montañar - probably unable to speak to perpetrators of the chaos, because they are probably not breaking any laws - just FAILING to use COMMON SENSE and concern themselves with the needs of others. Such facilities as there are remain misused.
The recurring nightmare
From time to time politicians raise the prospect of one-way traffic - from the Parador to the Port along the Montañar, with traffic in the other direction being transferred to Avenida Augusta, and it might have happened, had not Av. Augusta terminated in the Fontana Canal. We’ll try and keep you informed of any developments. CR.
The Blonde Handyman
A blonde, wanting to earn some money, decided to hire herself out as a handyman-type and started canvassing a wealthy neighbourhood. She went to the front door of the first house and asked the owner if he had any jobs for her to do. "Well, you can paint my porch. How much will you charge?" The blonde said "How about 100 Euros?" The man agreed and told her that the paint and ladder and anything else she might need was in the garage. The man's wife, inside the house, heard the conversation and said to her husband, "Does she realize that the porch goes all the way around the house?" The man replied, "She should. She was standing on the porch." A short time later, the blonde came to the door to collect her money. "You're finished already?" he asked. "Yes," the blonde answered, "and I had paint left over, so I gave it two coats." Impressed, the man reached in his pocket for the 100€. "And by the way," the blonde added, "it's not a Porch, it's a Ferrari."

A Pastor’s Point of View I don’t do “Doom and Gloom”
When a guest at a Ceremony of Marriage tells me how much they have enjoyed it, I often reply “My funerals are even more fun!”
Everyone refers to the event as a ‘Funeral’ - but I turn it into a time of Thanksgiving. We may have been parted from the PERSON, but no one can part us from our memories - and usually the good outweigh the not-sogood. Although I now officiate at 20-30 ‘weddings’ a year, the number of funerals is usually no more than 12 - but already in 2013 - I’ve had 17 funerals, which is more than any year I can remember. The Jávea Crematorium caters for around 365 deaths each year, so my 17 is relatively few, and the family need to ASK for me, or they will probably risk having their day of Thanksgiving filled with Doom and Gloom.

Many modern churches have a drummer in their ‘Worship Team’ and they always seem to be too loud and to believe that the singer and other instrumentalists are there to serve as a ‘backing group’ for the drums. Of course, the other side of the coin to to have the ‘sound’ mixed by a musician who believes the sound the instruments make to be more important than the words of the singer. I welcomed everyone to Susan’s Thanksgiving Service - rather sooner than one would expect for a lady born in January 1956 - and made no secret of the fact that the Bible states that there is a ‘new’ life when this one is over, and a number of the mourners told me how they were going to remember Susan. This ‘sharing’ is something I introduced to funerals in Jávea and then

I don’t recall talking to Sue when she was alive (other than passing in the street) but her Thanksgiving Service will remain with me for many, many years. I always ask the surviving spouse, family member or friend about the music the deceased liked, and we’ve had Rod Stuart (Sailing), Frank Sintra (Doing it his way) and Freddy Mercury and Montserrat Caballé reminding us about the merits of Spain’s 2nd City. “Geoff Britton is composing something special - he’s a drummer!” I was told, and as the name meant nothing to me, I was left none the wiser. Come the day - cometh the man, and Ann and I entered the Chapel at

He first explained that life starts with a single heartbeat, gathers pace with the birthing process, school, work, marriage and at the end - a single, and final heartbeat. For the following 7 minutes Geoff made his drums tell the story of Susan’s life, something he’d only been asked to do 24 hours earlier. When he changed his drumsticks for ‘brushes’ he had everyone clapping on the 2nd and 4th beats, before reverting back to ‘sticks’ for the run-down and then turning to look at the coffin as he made his last and for Susan - final, heartbeat.

A Funeral Plan – is that all you need?
Since coming to Spain in 1997, I have encouraged my clients to establish a Funeral Plan, write a valid Will (perhaps one each is required for both Spain and the UK) and generally ensure that their estate is in order. However, it is surprising how little the majority of people think about what will happen in the event of their demise.
Putting your ‘estate in order’ is not just about establishing a Funeral Plan with a reputable company to ensure that those you leave behind do not have the burden of funeral arrangements and associated costs, and it is not just about making a valid Will to ensure your loved ones receive what you want them to receive.
It is also about making sure that those left behind fully understand your wishes so that they can act accordingly and, perhaps controversially, are even recompensed for their efforts.
For example, let us assume that a person dies (a male in this example) having established a Funeral Plan and a valid Spanish Will. Let us suppose, as can often be the case, that the death was somewhat sudden and not really expected. In other words, whilst the person who died was close to, say, 80, he had no real health issues and the death was a ‘bit of a shock’ to those he knew. Although this person had established both the Funeral Plan and a Will, upon inspection of his numerous papers, there was no ‘real’ guidance as to ‘wishes’ when it came to the funeral. Whilst the Funeral Plan does state that he was Church of England and wants to be cremated, there is no other guidance for those left behind as to his true wishes. For example, what music does he want played at his funeral? Who should the family, assuming he has a family, contact to advise them of this death? Let’s face it, he may have been a
member of a number of clubs and societies, and those friends he developed over the years may wish to attend and pay their last respect. Spain is notorious for a very quick funeral. What type of priest does he want? Where are his ‘private’ papers? Does he have a lawyer, financial adviser, a doctor? The list can be endless.
Following the funeral, in this case, a cremation, someone has to collect the ashes. Who will take them? What does he want done with his ashes? When family are involved, it is easier to a degree, but the extra burden of having to make decisions can be an immense strain on your loved ones.
Equally, if the person in this example died with no living relatives, what happens then? Yes, we know he has a Funeral Plan and we know he has a Will, but that is no comfort to his friends and acquaintances, as they will be the ones left to sort everything out. They are the ones who have to make snap decisions from what should be included at the funeral, to collecting and disposing of ashes.
The following 3-point check-list is something you should all do, at the very least, to avoid the burden of your demise being placed on others: 1. Establish a Funeral Plan with a reputable funeral provider (this will depend on whether you can afford such luxury), but the introduction of payment facilities - with no interest if paid in 12 months - and repayments spread over as long as 5 years, has brought funeral

plans within the reach of most people. 2. Ensure that you have a valid Spanish Will. In addition, if you have UK assets, ensure that your UK Will is up-to-date and valid. 3. Set-up an ‘as and when’ note-book. This has been simplified by Pre-Pagado Paz, who offer Golden Leaves Plans, and have produced a small booklet where all the information needed by your friends or family can be assembled. AS OLD AS YOU FEEL!
When I was the editor of "The Grapevine" I used to write an article each month called "Woman to Woman", although I know many men used to read it also. When I resigned as editor and retired from writing, I thought I would never again be writing articles for a magazine. But Clive has other ideas and has asked me to write for "Jávea Jeard" so here we go! If I was to ask someone in their seventies and eighties how old they feel inside, many would say, they feel they are only 35 or so. As we grow older our bodies age but mentally we feel much younger. When we lived in the UK, Clive and I, (with the help of our Son Peter), owned and ran a home for the elderly in Shirebrook, just outside Mansfield. We established the home in a disused house that the Council had vacated when they built a new purpose built home for the elderly nearer the village. In the early days we only had a few residents but when we were full, we had 24 and a staff of 27 to give roundthe-clock care. We named the home "Ivy Lodge", because our first resident was a lady called Ivy Glendinning. Ivy attended the same Church as we did, and had been living in an Abeyfield sheltered housing complex where each resident had their own lounge/bedroom with kitchen facilities and bathroom. Ivy was expected to care for herself but the main meals were cooked by a resident housekeeper and were eaten in a communal dining room. Ivy became ill and had to go into hospital. She suffered badly from arthritis and had difficulty walking. While she was in hospital, she was told that she would not be able to return to her home as she now needed more care than Abbeyfield could provide. Ivy was devastated. She knew nothing about the home we were establishing in Shirebrook which needed a lot of work before we could open to our first resident.

The next day, Sunday, we attended Church in the morning and shared Ivy's predicament with the rest of the congregation. We explained that a room needed to be decorated and cleaned within the next few days ready for Ivy to move into. Immediately offers of help came from the congregation. Some offered to decorate, some clean, others made curtains and soft furnishings and the strong lads offered to collect all Ivy's furniture from Abbeyfield and deliver it to Ivy Lodge into Ivy's new room. Ivy was discharged a few days later and we collected her from the hospital. She was in tears because she didn't know where she was going to live. We told her not to worry, we had it all in hand, and drove her to Ivy Lodge. I will never forget the look of astonishment and happiness as we helped Ivy from our car into her own room. She saw all her own furniture neatly arranged in the newly decorated room and she burst into tears. Ivy loved her new room which was much bigger than the one she had in Abbeyfield, and she had great delight in watching (from her wheelchair), the workmen completing the work ready to open our doors to other residents. Ivy was with us until she eventually died, in her own bed, in her own room, with a smile on her face as she slipped away. The building had originally been an isolation hospital so as well as the main house which had 10 bedrooms upstairs and large lounges and kitchen on the ground floor, there were also two very large wards attached to the house. From the main house, a long heated corridor took us to the first ward, then another long corridor to the second ward. We converted the first ward into single and double bedrooms for the residents and the second ward housed the local Assembly of God Church with an apartment upstairs where Clive and I lived. It was very handy having the Church on the premises because it meant that those residents that wanted to go to Church, had only to walk down the two corridors and they were there. Some of our residents suffered
from Alzheimer's but although they had difficulties remembering the present, the stories they had to tell of their past when they were much younger were a joy to listen to. It was obvious from the looks and smiles on their faces as they remembered the years of their youth that they were once again in their 20s or 30s. Some of the stories they had to tell were fascinating and it was obvious that they enjoyed sharing their experiences with the other residents. I encouraged as many as possible (especially those with Alzheimer's) to attend a special group I held on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Those who attended were given a new exercise book and I asked them to write their memories down during the week as they remembered them. Those that were able were encouraged at the next group session to read out their story to the rest of the group and what wonderful mornings they were. Mary, one of our Alzheimer's residents had been a headmistress and she had us in fits of laughter for hours as she recollected the stories of the children in her school. Another had been the wife of a man in the forces and she told us so many stories of the many countries she had visited, they were told so vividly that we could all imagine we were there with her.

Cine Jayan ceiling collapses
Part of the Cine Jayan's ceiling fell down injuring a patron on the head. The last four or five rows were affected. The collapse occurred at the beginning of the session and few people were inside the cinema.
Jávea Town Hall to maintain beach tourist infrastructures
Jávea, and 4 other municipalities, has agreed to accept responsibility for the maintenance and repair of tourist infrastructure on the beach e.g. volleyball nets, children’s climbing frames, foot baths, signs etc. The total set aside by Valencia for all the municipalities involved is 553,000€.
Jávea school trials tablet textbooks
The Graüll school in Jávea is part of a pilot project to replace paper textbooks with tablets and e-books. The project is funded by the Ministry of Education. 50 students will use the new technology, which should, in time represent savings of more than 100 Euros for parents. A total of 1000 students from 24 schools are involved in the trial.
Amjasa profits up
The Jávea municipal water company, Amjasa, closed the first half of 2013 with a profit of 348,000 euros, surpassing the profits made over the same period last year. The money will be used on various improvements to the network.
Foreigners bring some relief to still-grim housing market
Property purchases by foreigners in Spain continued to surge in the second quarter of the year on a back of an ongoing decline in prices, in what has become the only bright spot in a market in the doldrums since a massive bubble burst around the start of 2008. Purchases by foreign residents climbed a record 16.9 percent to 12,546 in the April-June period. Purchases by the foreign community have now risen for the past eight quarters. Sales to non-resident foreigners amounted to 1,086 meaning that foreigners accounted for one out of every six transactions in the quarter.

Tourist figures improve slightly
The tourism department has made an initial assessment of hotel occupation over the past two months. According to the data, the municipality has seen a slight improvement over 2012 with August having an occupancy of 87% of the 1,095 hotel rooms in the town.

For the second year in succession Granadella has won the competition organised by TV station Antena 3 over the summer.
Jávea prepares bye laws to deal with anti-social and illegal events in public areas
Jávea Town Hall is preparing bye-laws to control "botellon" (large gatherings of people having noisy, usually drunken street parties at night): prostitution, grafitti, advertising "this car for sale" on cars parked on the road, hawking, BarBQs on the beach and other illegal activities in public areas. These regulations will seek to "promote conviviality and citizenship" and "identify actions that disrupt or impair coexistence and set appropriate penalties ."
Jumble Sale raises 1200€ for Jávea Red Cross
A jumble sale held in support of the Jávea Red Cross raised 1200€. The event was organised as part of the Mare de Déu de Loreto fiestas and the money will go towards improving ambulance equipment.
English lessons have begun
Monday 30th September saw the start of the new teaching year (the 4th) by the volunteer teaching group which is teaching English to the unemployed in Javea, with the support of the CREAMA employment agency in the town. There are now 31 teachers involved, the initiative having begun with 6. This year, 99 prospective students took the placement test and were placed in: Basic (28), PreIntermediate (29), Intermediate (21) and Advanced (21). The new level of preintermediate was introduced as there are now sufficient teachers and classrooms available. There are now 2 teachers for each level, teaching one morning a week each, with 6 assistant teachers, 9 teachers covering conversation classes and 8 back-up teachers. Lessons are

taught Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, with conversation groups on a Wednesday; all at the Adult College in the old town. An exciting new initiative from the teaching group, helped by the Town Hall and the chief of the local police, is to start teaching English classes in the evenings to the local police force. So far 35, about half the force, have registered to take the placement exam. This will be a big step forward for integration within our community.
Underwater earthquakes in Gulf of Valencia associated with gas rig
More than 20 earthquakes were felt in the Gulf of Valencia on 1st October, making a total of 141 in the last week and a half – the most severe of which measured 4.2 on the Richter scale. Each of them has had its epicentre near the Castor drilling platform off the coast of Vinaròs (Castellón province), says the National Geographical Institute. Some 1.2 billion euros have been invested in the Castor project, which is attempting to exploit an old oil pocket around 1.75 kilometres below the sea-bed as an offshore gas store, which will provide a third of the Valencia region's gas supply needs for 50 days.

Hospital dispensary drugs law now in force
A controversial new law forcing chronically-ill patients to pay for medication dispensed in hospital came into force on Tuesday, October 1 – some of Spain's regional governments have refused to comply, though Valencia is not among them. People with serious illnesses such as cancer, hepatitis, HIV or ongoing but non-life threatening conditions like psoriasis or infertility, some of whose medication is provided by in-house dispensaries instead of highstreet pharmacies, will be expected to pay 10 per cent of the cost with a limit of 4.20 euros per individual prescription box or packet.
Spain considering changing time zones
Marathon working days; low productivity; late lunches and dinners compared to the rest of Europe; less time for personal life, rest and recreation; family-work imbalances… these longstanding aspects of Spanish life are all largely the result of Spain being in the wrong time zone, which should be Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), the same as Portugal, the United Kingdom and Ireland, but which is in fact an hour later, thanks to General Francisco Franco's decision in 1942 to align the country's clocks with those of Nazi Germany. The solution, agreed in a parliamentary commission at the end of September, is for Spain to turn its clocks back 60 minutes and introduce more regular working hours, starting at 9am and ending at 5pm, as in the rest of Europe.

Consumers opt for bulk energy buys
Spain's electricity is the third-mostexpensive in Europe. Last week, the OCU (Spanish Consumers and User's Association) launched an initiative that will allow customers to pool their resources to buy electricity, bringing down the cost of their bill in the process. The idea, which has a number of
precedents in Europe, is to form a large consumer group to buy energy at bulk prices, negotiating the price directly with producers and distributors. The theory is that the more energy is bought, the cheaper it is. Until October 14, anybody, whether or not they are a member of the OCU, can join the group via www.quieropagarmenosluz.org.
Fire hydrant map
Civil Protection volunteers have completed a survey of all 465 fire hydrants in Jávea, discovering that just under 100 do not work. They have compiled a map showing the location of each hydrant as well as its features, including water pressure which will be useful in case of fire. The map has been made available to firefighting agencies via the Internet.

Organic production in Spain offers opportunities for diversification
The Director General of Industria Alimentaria, a body under the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (MAGRAMA), Fernando Burgaz, highlighted the opportunities which organic production offers for diversification and "its bond with traditional production systems and the land". APASA plans a cat shelter
The San Antonio animal protection Association (APASA) plans to build a shelter for 50 to 60 cats in the facilities it has in Les Sorts for dogs. I was enjoying the second week of a two-week vacation the same way I had enjoyed the first week: by doing as little as possible.

Woman to Woman
Some of those exercise books became a work of art, especially with those residents who had an artistic streak. The headmistress in particular illustrated each story with a drawing which certainly put me to shame, I was always hopeless at art. The group had been established mainly to help those with Alzheimer's but soon the other residents wanted their own exercise book and the opportunity to join in. The staff helped those who had trouble writing, and it looked strange to come into the lounge or dining room to find so many residents sitting round the large table busy writing in their exercise book accompanied with much laughter and chatter. Clive and I loved working in Ivy Lodge, living on the premises we had much more contact with the residents than if we had lived away. I found it so convenient because the staff cooked and served us meals as they served the residents. No cooking for me! I have so many memories of our four years at Ivy Lodge, but if I kept on writing it would fill this magazine, so for now I will stop. Some of the people that come into our Oasis Centre in the Port remind me of those residents of Ivy Lodge. Often they confide how lonely they are to me, and one lady even wonders if life is worth living now that she is on her own. We encourage those that want to make friends, to attend our 11am Church service on a Sunday morning where everyone is welcome and afterwards there is the opportunity to make new friends as we all have a cup of tea (or coffee) and biscuits. I tell the lonely ones that life is definitely worth living. Life is a gift from God and He will decide when that life should come to an end. Clive and I had a friend who didn't attend any Church but who gave us the thought: "When we go to bed WE go to sleep, but it is GOD who decides if - and where - we wake up again!" So if you live in the Port and need advice or want a chat (I am a good listener), call into the Oasis Centre any morning between 10am and 2pm, I am usually there. The Oasis Centre is situated at C/. Toni Llido 5 (next to La Caixa bank) - head for the Dolphin roundabout. So until next month, enjoy life, live every day as if it was your last and you will find life much more enjoyable. People ask me when I am going to retire but why should I retire - after all I AM ONLY 35 YEARS OLD!!! AR

Harvest Thanksgiving services were a part of village life, for most of us, but like many community activities that centred around the local churches - few of us take the trouble to ‘Give Thanks’, and certainly not to God, and often not to each other. Jávea Evangelical Church, currently meeting in the Oasis Centre, at the rear of La Caixa bank in the Port, hold their ‘Harvest Thanksgiving’ at 11am on Sunday 20th October. Readers can leave items for the Harvest Display at the Oasis Centre, and after 20th October, the non-perishable items will be boxed and distributed among homeless and needy families at Christmas - as we did for many years through Don Joaquin the priest at the Fishermen’s Church, until he was promoted to Glory.
If you don’t ask you don’t get
When Oascar Anton distributed a message updating local citizens on the fire in Granadella on 1st October, and referred to helicopter pilots lifting huge buckets of water from people’s swimming pools, I asked if AMJASA would replace the water FREE of charge, and my question brought a quick response, attacking me for asking. Within 48 hours, Oscar had posted a reply, saying AMJASA WOULD replace the water, free of charge, if affected clients contacted them. Sadly, if anyone who was affected has already replaced the water, by turning on the tap, the meter will already have charged your account.
When will it be 15th September?
That’s the question being asked by folk in the Port area of Jávea who were told that work on widening pavements, and changing the parking pattern on Av. Jaime I would start. When approval of the project was announced in July, a start date of 15th September was given with completion by Christmas. Some residents have expressed their belief that if work is not completed by the end of 2013, the Town Hall will lose the ‘grant’ - but our understanding is that ALL of the cost is being financed by Jávea Town Hall from the 300,000€uro they received from selling land ceded to them by a building developer. The bus station was scheduled to take 3 months and took more than 9.

Very experienced Jávea electrician, entrepreneur and charity fundraiser, Vicente Teruel, was on a routine connection job on the Montgó - not working with high voltage ‘ when he fell to his death, having been electrocuted. Sometimes we overlook that even those who do what we would regard as a ‘safe’ job can put their lives at risk.

I’m Becky
My name is Becky and I have recently moved to Jávea with my partner so we can fulfil our dream!
We’ve had a home here for many years but took the leap of faith and sold our house in the UK leaving the grey skies and drizzle behind. With children who are all grown up and happy for us I have only one regret..leaving my career/passion behind.
My past 10 years have been spent working with people who have had a drug or alcohol problem. Working for a charity called Turning Point in Hertfordshire I worked alongside the probation service where offenders were given a treatment court order (offenders were asked if they would like to take the treatment option or a custodial sentence). This was both rewarding and challenging. I also worked with voluntary, homeless, and clients suffering from domestic violence. I also counselled families and friends affected by their loved ones substance misuse. As a qualified Counsellor I ran groups and saw clients on a one to one basis and also had a private counselling practice. Addiction to drugs and alcohol can creep up on you over time, creating havoc in people’s lives before the realisation that there is a problem. Whether you need to seek treatment for yourself or a loved one, counselling can help you to understand the underlying issues surrounding an addiction.

Although qualified in PersonCentred Counselling I am also trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and in motivational techniques to help encourage healthy habits and also addressing life issues, which may have contributed to the addiction in the first place. So here I am in Javea, making a change in my life and hoping others can make a change in theirs too, if that is what they want. I have set up a private counselling practise here in Javea both generic and dealing with substance misuse. I am also pursuing various avenues to help support people. I would like to start some support groups, support having successfully facilitated various groups in England.
