A Message from our Board Chair and President
Last year was a great year of evolution for Lancaster City Alliance. Between July 2016 and June 2017, we embraced changes in leadership of the Board and staff, welcomed new team members and moved to our new home we now share with key partner organizations. Through this organizational growth and progression, our vision to Unleash Lancaster’s Future remained steadfast with continued community collaborations, effective partnerships and the work of the almost 70 volunteers that make up LCA’s Board of Directors and Executive Leadership Teams. With that said, we are proud to present our 2016/17 Annual Report entitled Real People. Real Work. to reflect on the remarkable work being extended to create a world-class city. Within these pages, you will find a summary of LCA’s financial performance as well as a synopsis of significant accomplishments of the last year. Everything that we’ve achieved is through the collective efforts of many people and organizations that care about our great City, many of which are recognized within our report. Results of this important work include: • Through community collaborations, such as SoWe and Neighbors United, LCA Bike Ambassadors now cover three quadrants of the City, assisting residents and businesses in enhancing quality of life. • Work with small businesses and entrepreneurs continues to expand with two successful Cultivate Lancaster Entrepreneur Forums held last year, each attracting over 200 entrepreneurs and resource providers. • A strengthened merchant community continues to thrive with monthly meetings attracting over 50 participants and leading to successful events such as Velocity and Restaurant Week. • Through implementation of the Building On Strength 15-year economic development strategic plan, investment is occurring throughout the City at a rapid pace with over $500M in projects recently completed, underway or planned, $300M of which is occurring in City neighborhoods outside of Downtown. • The Downtown Investment District remains fiscally strong and now celebrates 25 years since inception, reinvesting in the City’s core through streetscape improvements to ensure a strong city center. Thank you for your investment in LCA and Lancaster City. As you can see, it is making a difference! With a collective vision for Lancaster as a safer, cleaner, friendlier, and more attractive city, on August 13, 1991, Lancaster City Council, under Mayor Janice Stork, created the Lancaster Downtown Investment District Authority (DID). This was the culmination of four years of hard work by a group of dedicated City stakeholders who developed a plan for the well-being of Downtown Lancaster, which was adopted in 1992. The original focus of the DID centered on safety, beautification, cleanliness, events, marketing, and parking. Today, and after two boundary expansions, safety and cleanliness remain the key priorities and have expanded significantly. While the DID continues to support events and marketing, those efforts are now led by the City of Lancaster Office of Promotion (LOOP). Thanks to the DID leadership and others throughout the 25 years, Downtown Lancaster has seen enormous growth. When others did not believe in the City core, the DID did! Here is a snapshot of the DID in 1992 vs 2017:
