The Five Pillars that Shape Our Community STAND for EXCELLENCE: SCHOLARSHIP & LEARNING Scholastic achievement is a central part of each chapter’s goals. Each chapter places strong emphasis on creating an atmosphere conducive to high academic performance, challenging each member to live up to his or her highest academic potential. As a result, members of Miami’s fraternities and sororities consistently earn GPAs above the All Men, Women, and Campus averages. This reflects Greek student leadership not only in the community but also in the classroom.

One of the most rewarding aspects of fraternity and sorority involvement is the opportunity to impact the lives of those in the community. The Miami fraternity/sorority community prides itself in community service involvement. Last year, Miami Greeks donated countless hours and thousands of dollars to both local and national charities through service projects and philanthropic fundraisers. Service and philanthropy also provides a means of fostering personal growth and unity among the members of the Miami fraternity and sorority community.

STAND with the GREEK COMMUNITY

Friday, August24: Welcome Home with Late Night | Location: Various 7:30–11:00pm

The Greek Community has been thriving for over 185 years at Miami University. The Greek community offers leadership, social, and service opportunities that you will find hard to match elsewhere. Whether it is a fraternity or sorority sponsored service event, social, philanthropy, athletic event, or speaker, you will be able to grow as an individual through your Greek involvement at Miami University.

STAND TOGETHER: BROTHERHOOD & SISTERHOOD One of the greatest benefits of being a member of a fraternity or sorority is the tremendous relationships you form within your chapter. A cornerstone and foundation of the fraternity/sorority experience, the ideal of brotherhood and sisterhood, is reflected in the close bonds of friendship and family experienced by members within each chapter. These relationships exceed that of a friendship – the lasting relationships that you form as a fraternity brother or sorority sister help make Miami University a home away from home with your new “family”. Outside of individual chapters, the unique personalities of fraternity and sorority members provide a diverse and wellrounded Greek Community.

HISTORY For over 185 years, fraternities and sororities on our campus have developed a deep heritage full of tradition, history, success and pride. This heritage benefits both our fraternity and sorority members and the broader university community. The founding of five social Greek-letter organizations here at the University has earned Miami University the nickname, “Mother of Fraternities.” Today, the University hosts almost 50 fraternity and sorority chapters. Each chapter is committed to five Community Principles: Scholarship and Learning, Service and Philanthropy, Leadership and Values, Community, and Brotherhood and Sisterhood.

INTERFRATERNITY and PANHELLENIC RECRUITMENT

ADVANCE

Recruitment, formerly known as Rush, is the process by which fraternities and sororities on campus introduce themselves to prospective members. Formal recruitment takes place in late January and early February. During this time, and throughout the semester, you are invited to visit the chapters to learn what each group has to offer.

Designed for our community leadership, chapter presidents, and council executive board officers, ADVANCE allows our leaders to work towards optimal effectiveness within their chapters and councils, while building a sense of community. This three day values-based leadership experience is intentionally designed for students to work together as a community and to set goals and action plans for the advancement of their chapters and councils.

For Recruitment Dates and Details Please Visit: miamioh.edu/fsll.

NATIONAL PAN-HELLENIC COUNCIL RECRUITMENT/INTAKE The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) chapters conduct intake on a chapter to chapter basis. Please contact the Cliff Alexander Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life or each chapter directly for more information about the intake process and dates.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS for RECRUITMENT Please note that there are general expectations and requirements that prospective members must meet before joining a chapter. A detailed list of expectations can be found in the Student Handbook. These requirements include, but are not limited to: • A minimum of 12 completed credit hours from Miami • Full time Miami University Oxford campus student • At least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average (GPA) • Completion of Introduction to Fraternity & Sorority Life Online Training • Requirements must be met by the end of the fall semester prior to recruitment

GREEKS STEP UP Collaborating with Student Wellness and HAWKS Peer Health Educators, the Cliff Alexander Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life implements an award winning program for all new members that focuses on bystander intervention and equips students with the tools, skills, and motivation to successfully intervene in a variety of situations including hazing, sexual violence, and drug and alcohol abuse. Each new member of the fraternity/sorority community is required to attend this program during the first semester they join. Through this experience, students are empowered to live by the values of Miami and create a greater sense of community within their Greek organizations where healthy behaviors are practiced and encouraged.

ACROPOLIS ACROPOLIS is an emerging leaders retreat for students that have been recently initiated. This program works to bring together members from each fraternity and sorority to explore and understand the importance of leadership. The weekend long program examines leadership style, personal choices, and community action.

UIFI UIFI is the preeminent leadership development experience for fraternity and sorority members. UIFI offers participants the opportunity to explore, define, and enhance their leadership skills, personal awareness, and commitment to their fraternity or sorority. Participants grow to expect values-based action from themselves and those they lead.

National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) The National Pan-Hellenic Council is the governing body of traditionally African American fraternities and sororities. NPHC organizations are unique with respect to other Greek-lettered organizations in that they have a continuous commitment to providing community service and to uplifting/promoting the general public’s welfare. NPHC organizations embrace the continuance of social action, political empowerment, and economic development. Interfraternity Council (IFC) The Interfraternity Council is the largest men’s organization at Miami, serving as the governing body for its 24 member fraternities. The IFC offers many programs for chapters including sports programs, community service projects, and new member initiatives. Chapters and IFC sponsor and hold events throughout the academic year in each of the 5 pillars: Scholarship & Learning, Service & Philanthropy, Leadership & Values, Brotherhood & Sisterhood, and Community. In addition to helping fraternity men fulfill their commitment to the 5 pillars, IFC provides individuals with leadership opportunities. Chapter members have the chance to participate in leadership training, education, and development with their respective chapters and governing councils, as well as hold elected positions in their individual chapters and the IFC. These opportunities provide excellent experiences that are carried on to other aspects of life. IFC also sponsors and coordinates Miami’s fraternity recruitment program. Second Year Fraternity Living Most fraternities have chapter houses in close proximity to campus. If eligible, second year fraternity men may live in their respective fraternity house in place of the secondyear on campus residency requirement. The cost of living in the fraternity house varies from fraternity to fraternity. Additional information regarding cost of housing for fraternity houses can be found at: miamioh.edu/fsll.

Miami is proud to be home to five of the Divine Nine historically black Greek letter organizations.

Panhellenic Association (PA) The Panhellenic Association at Miami University includes 17 nationally known sororities. Panhellenic promotes the common interest of all sororities here at Miami and serves as the unifying, governing, and coordinating body of the sorority community. The Panhellenic Association is comprised of an annually elected executive council and a delegate from each affiliated sorority. Through programming, Panhellenic seeks to provide personal enrichment and knowledge to all sorority members. The Panhellenic Association offers a wide variety of programs for members covering topics including: health, sorority sports, education, community service, and philanthropy. Panhellenic also sponsors and coordinates Miami’s sorority recruitment program. The influence of the Panhellenic Association is a crucial part not only of the sorority community but also in promoting the betterment of the entire Greek Community at Miami University. As the communication link between the sororities, campus organizations, and community leaders, the Panhellenic Executive Board serves a multitude of purposes. Sorority Living Learning Community The national sororities of National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) and Panhellenic Association have sorority suites within the residence halls where they hold chapter meetings and other functions. These living learning communities provide a shared living space for second year chapter members to live together in a sorority-centered experience on campus. Locations for sorority living learning communities vary on an annual basis.
