Beverly Hills designer Ross Vincent spent two years designing every aspect of

this $20-million hotel project, The Kindler. Ross created a glamorous, immersive experience reminiscent of The Great Gatsby. The new hotel is at 11th and P Streets, in Lincoln, just a few blocks away from the Historic Haymarket District and University of Nebraska-Lincoln. For the sevenstory hotel, a vertical expansion of a 1905 building, Ross opted for what he calls a “Modern Deco” design. He explains, “When I toured Omaha and Lincoln during my research, I discovered hints of Art Deco in the older buildings there and was inspired.” Ross brought together elements from the Art Deco era of the 1920s and 1930s and married them with cutting edge design from today, creating a new design concept he calls Modern Deco. “Modern Deco is today’s Mid-Century Modern,” says, Ross. www.rossvincentdesign.com ■

ari Whitman Interiors’ repurposing design philosophy meets this former 1901 Boulder, Colorado grocery store to create a 3,000 square foot luxury, loft-style home with an artistic industrial edge. Custom Lighting by Kari Whitman and 1stdibs.com soften up the industrial space for a luxurious, at-home feel. This creative industrial project is as green as can be with not even one piece of drywall used. Luxury interior designer Kari Whitman created walls and showers out of 9” glass panels repurposed from a New York pre-war building about to be destroyed. True to Kari Whitman Interiors’ design ethos, all finishes are custom, including luxurious 10-foot hot rolled steel door dividers, and a headboard and several walls made of 300 Ralph Lauren and Ecodomo recycled belts, respectively. Floors by Indoteak Design, and kitchen appliances and cabinetry from Gaggenau update this 1901 space into a modern, industrial home for comfortable 21st century living. Black and white photos by Jim Marshall and art by Stikki Peaches add as artistic edge to the industrial space. No expense was spared in this Boulder, Colorado industrial home, which features one-of-a-kind interior design installations including living walls 10 | www.ClienteleLuxury.com

SPRING

ACCESSORIES

Jimmy Choo Animal Print 80mm Sandals It’s time to mix up tradition. Jimmy Choo does that here with two different animal prints – a stripe zebra-like variation and black-and-white leopard-like spots – that gel together in a twotoned mixed-media format. While they exude statement appeal, they also have summertime ease all over, thanks to the open toe and back and mid-height stiletto heel.

Dolce & Gabbana Amore Logo Plaque Crossbody Bag 2020 is all about the chains – large, chunky, vintage-styled ones, to be exact. They’ll be around our necks, dangling about our wrists, and, as this Dolce & Gabbana bag shows, clanking to and fro as long, brilliant straps. This crossbody style plays to the contrasts, pairing pale baby blue with a paneled body and bold gold-toned hardware covering the strap and accenting the front with a pearl-studded brand plaque.

Valentino Garavani VLOCK Carpet Reedition Shoulder Bag The past few years have seen designers revive their quintessential prints, reinvigorating something that would’ve ordinarily been relatively retro. This fully leather shoulder bag with chain details and a magnetic closure pulls from Valentino’s 1970-71 collection, adding a boho flair from a distance and colorful, artistic details once you examine it up close.

La Californienne Rolex Oyster Perpetual Inspired by the vibrant beauty of the Californian landscape, brand La Californienne shows just how to do upcycling – or the process of reworking older items into something new. Here, those are vintage Rolex or Cartier watches, and while the original aspects are in place, eco-conscious materials are used to refinish the case and hand-paint the strap in a candy-colored pastel rainbow that’s sure to draw eyes.

Lanvin Blue JL Sneakers The “dress” sneaker has gotten a bit of traction in the high fashion world over the past few years, due to platformed and occasionally bejeweled versions by Gucci and Chanel. Lanvin unveils its version here, one that’s a tad more subdued, lower in height, and reminiscent of Adidas Stan Smiths, with a few more luxury details. The comfort and easygoing nature remain, but a sky-blue colorway with logo details, buffed leather, and gold-tone accents elevate it above pedestrian.

Worldly Bold Design For Saudi Royal Family

When the Saudi Royal Family decided it was time to update

their massive 45 room Preston Hollow, Dallas estate, they turned to renowned international interior designer Kari Whitman for eclectic, worldly design. Before she got to work, eco-friendly designer Whitman took an inventory of the estates existing art and furniture collection, repurposing everything she could first before spending a year traveling

the world to shop for one-of-a-kind pieces to fill the home. Kari added features such as a stainless steel and macassar ebony door weighing 1000 pounds, dramatic chandeliers, and a custom dining table by Kari Whitman to create the luxurious feel her clients wanted. In the breakfast room, she displays their love of fashion as Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, and Yves Saint Laurent are featured in oversized artwork, while the walls were finished in dozens of mixed

shades to capture the feel of the inside of an oyster’s shell- a subtle shimmer which showcases the treasures on the walls. All of these features are balanced perfectly with mid-century modern furniture, metal influences, rich fabrics, and soft lighting. While being fashionable and artistic, the estate remains comfortable with large, comfortable seating options and textured wallpaper to compliment the colors in the home. Other features in the home include recycled glass countertops, 18 | www.ClienteleLuxury.com

bronzed aspen leaf decor, a large metal soaking tub with jets, a cozy cinema, family heirlooms and vintage finds, a custom ball bearing coffee table she created for the lady of the house, and a distinguished art collection to suit the excellent taste of her clients. The home has a perfect balance of masculine and feminine elements, exemplified by both dark and light spaces, and both colorful and monochrome spaces, which all flow together flawlessly in this estate. â–

Smooth Tones Warm Vibes Interior Design By Cathleen Shera, Showplace Interiors Photo Credit: Roberto Zeballos

Cathleen Shera, President and lead Designer of Showplace Interiors,

Inc has just completed this stunning project on top of Mount Soledad in La Jolla, California. The original construction, a 1970's California Ranch Style singe story residence was inherited by the owners adult children and now serves as the family compound for current and future generations to come. Cathleen worked with her in-house 20 | www.ClienteleLuxury.com

architect to create a new look but keep the Spanish Coastal-Ranch bones of the property while adding modern upgrades and amenities. As the property sits on a private knoll over looking the Pacific Ocean, she could only add approximately 1000 sq ft to the existing structure. This meant every inch had to count. The original kitchen and nook was completely gutted to create a kitchen twice the size, while moving the family daily dining to the covered patio outside. In addition, all

new landscape and sustainable plants were added as part of the farm to table theme with the inner courtyard bearing lemons, olives, thyme, sage, lavender and rosemary to compliment the family lifestyle of home and hearth wellness living. The fabulous east-west facing great room not only takes in breathtaking ocean and sunset views; but handles the entire multi-generational family and their guests spilling over to the raised dining areas and outdoor patios for extra seating. Many of the families western antiques were kept to highlight entry and hallway niches and serve as loving reminder of the family past. Modern day conveniences such as electronic sunshades are concealed

by elegant mock roman linen valances throughout the view corridor windows. The master suite was enlarged to incorporate a new master bath retreat with dual sided fireplace connecting a soaking tub and taking in dramatic ocean views. Beyond the bath, a personal gym and sauna beckon the owners through a barn door. The entire master bedrooms soothing coastal palette was carefully selected by the designer to highlight the La Jolla scenery with soft cloudy blues, textured sand and river stones and shimmering polished nickel accents throughout. showplaceinteriors.com. â–

After

extensive education in interior design and architecture, including Colorado State University, Harvard University, and the University of Colorado, Andrea Schumacher started her own interior design company in 1999. Now 20 years strong, the company has left its 26 | www.ClienteleLuxury.com

emotions they bring, and is always learning and getting inspired by her environment. These factors directly impact how Schumacher approaches her projects, which often feature some interplay between various textures, architectural forms, and effects and reference all stages of life. As a counterpoint to this, Schumacher also approaches projects from a structured perspective, one influenced by set design. Yet, the method is far from rigid, instead imbuing spaces with strong backdrop elements and lush color usage. For the Cherry Hills Charmer, Schumacher sought to create a brighter space, which began with removing some walls and painting existing ones a fresh coat of white. From here, she used that foundation to experiment with texture, colors, and patterns. The backgrounds are some of the project’s most notable aspects, infusing rooms with brilliant pops of yellow, pink, and green and displaying Schumacher’s attunement to nature. Floral and bird themes create the sense as if you’re living in an enchanted garden or deep in a tropical forest. After migrating to another space, the motif becomes more minimal, appearing as a series of dog silhouettes or a scalloped, wave-like texture in blue, as if to position you over the ocean. The emotive aspect also comes through, giving visitors a tour through different landscapes and stages of wonderment. Backgrounds, however, aren’t always color saturated or thematic. Schumacher’s team balanced these out with relatively neutral shades 30 | www.ClienteleLuxury.com

of white, off-white, grey, muted turquoise, and navy that appear to flow through every room while still adding a cohesive aspect. Collectively, the spaces feel singular but are nevertheless allowed to stand out with their individual characteristics and elements. On this last note, it’s clear Schumacher got inspired by different architectural styles, and the colors in turn tie them all together without everything feeling like a mishmash of seemingly divergent methods. In one room, a more coastal cottage character comes through, via the white walls accented with wood beams and blue-lined windows. Yet, the space is also optimally designed for light without resorting to large picture windows. Instead, the sunlight comes through and bounces off the high, smooth-edged ceiling, allowing its warmth to effortlessly envelope the room. As a counterpart to this, a more contemporary character emerges in other rooms, accentuated by the use of glass, marble, and metals and clear use of contrasts. Sharp edges give everything a sense of order. Yet, round, globe-like resin fixtures soften things and indirectly amplify the space’s more natural elements. This aspect carries through the varied use of texture: for instance, stone tiling below fuzzy rugs and wood beams, with angular edges highlighted, placed throughout. The result, some might say, is one of contradictions: worldly but distinctively personal, and open and spacious yet extremely intimate. andreaschumacherinteriors.com ■

INTERIOR DESIGN SARA STORY

Beautiful in Bel Air Designed by Sara Story Photo Credit: Roger Davies

With several accolades behind her name, including a spot on the

LUXE Gold List and being named one of the Top 50 Designers in New York by NY Spaces, Sara Story has grabbed attention with a distinctive style that borrows from her travels, as well as contemporary art and fashion. Rooms juggle multiple elements, from vintage pieces to modern shapes and eye-catching works of art. Her Bel Air project encapsulates all of these aspects precisely, illustrating the balance that goes into each of her concepts. The

home’s design and positioning, from a large-scale perspective, focus on maximizing the view of the outdoors, all while allowing natural sunlight to illuminate each room with a natural glow. Space by space, Story’s eye for detail and precise contrasts emerges once you set foot in the entry-interior. Story strived to create an architecturally strong impression that sets the stage for the rest of the home and does this with a bold lacquer and metal console table and whimsical mirror made out of handblown glass – both of which

create a sense of individuality yet share similar characteristics with the dining room. Although each room stands apart, Story imbues the property with a fluid feel. Clean lines, shades of white, and omnipresent natural sunlight unite all spaces. Yet, personality is in the specific touches she selects, like a certain wall covering or a fuzzy texture contrasting against Space Ageesque round edges. The living room particularly captures this aesthetic: Story aimed to create a monochromatic yet tactile space based on textural layers that, at the same time, wouldn’t fight with or detract from the view. While this balance between the furniture and large windows is apparent, the details shouldn’t be overlooked: Story, here, gives each piece a clear character, whether it’s the boomerang chairs from the 1950s, the tonal area rug made out of wool, banana silk, and bamboo, or the angular coffee table featuring a blackened steel base and high-gloss polyurethane top. Throughout the rest of the property, Story’s vision softens the rectangular shape with sculptural elements or incorporates attentiongetting vintage upholstered furniture from the ‘50s or ‘60s – itself contrasting against the overall contemporary nature. A well-placed wallcovering, wood texture, or millwork further infuses that structure with an organic element. Yet, no matter if you’re in the dining area, kitchen, or home office, the property consistently feels warm, welcoming, and connected to the outdoors beyond. sarastorydesign.com ■

LUXE ART

CAPTURED WITH SIGNIFICANCE 1933 INDIAN MOTOPLANE 96" X 48" Limited Edition Aluminum Print Edition of 150. Price $6000

Around the world, we see passionate motorcycle collectors, some

who custom build and some who ride the most gorgeous trails throughout the country. The power behind the throttle is ultimately thrilling, but capturing the vision has a different dimension to it. For Derek Althen, this passion manifested itself as a successful career photographing vintage motorcycles. Althen attended Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, now known as Otis College of Art and Design. There, he studied graphic design but, in the process, opted to take a course in studio lighting. The class catalyzed his first career path – commercial photography, which entailed shooting fashion and beauty campaigns – that lasted for roughly 20 years. Another happenstance led to his current career in motorcycle photography: On a photoshoot location, he spotted a 1928 Harley Davidson JD hill climber, covered in rust and dust but still seemingly with a story to tell. Althen asked to photograph it, and by capturing its character and details, Althen translated his interest in motorcycles

Artist Note: I spend two to three hours photographing each motorcycle. I light each individual part, creating 60-100 images. I then combine bits & pieces of those images into one photograph. This process takes an additional 80-100 hours. The final product is printed on gloss aluminum giving the photos a almost 3-D appearance.

into a new direction for his photography career – taking fine art portraits of vintage bikes. These, however, aren’t the Harley with its glinting chrome in the driveway. Rather, Althen seeks out history and unique narratives. “Most of the bikes I shoot are extremely rare and have historical significance,” he tells us. As a result, the process of photographing them is fairly painstaking. Althen spends two to three hours shooting the motorcycle, after lighting each part. The shoot produces anywhere from 60 to 100 images, which he then combines into a single photograph. This digital compositing adds an additional 100 hours to create the final image. From here, Althen prints the image on ChromaLuxe® aluminum, known for its clarity and longevity, for a nearly 3D effect. althenandalthen.com ■

ADVENTURE LUXE TRAVELTRAVEL

Sleeping Under THE STARS We all have memories of sleeping outdoors under the stars once spring transformed into summer. These days, you might sit on your porch or patio to do such a thing, watching the sky as the minutes tick closer to midnight. But, then you retire indoors to sleep in your cozy bed surrounded by four defined walls. Capitalizing on the nostalgia surrounding camping and combining it with luxury features, multiple hotel and resort properties across the globe have created a similar experience. We’ve selected a handful of must-visit destinations for sleeping under the stars in absolute comfort and elegance.

> L’Albereta Photo Credit : L’Albereta

To understand the appeal of L’Albereta, you need to first think about the surrounding landscape and history. Flanked by the Po and Alpine valleys, Franciacorta is a verdant patch of rolling green hills nearly equidistant between Milan and Verona, shaped like an amphitheater and dotted with castles, towers, stone churches, and abbeys that have stood there for centuries. In fact, monastic courts had established estates here even before 1000 A.D. While it was once primarily farmland, today, it’s a wine production area where techniques date back to the days of the Benedictine monks. Although multiple wines are produced in the region, Franciacorta has become associated with a sparkling fermented wine made out of a combination of chardonnay, pinot Bianco, and pinot Nero grapes. As visitors note the remnants of the past and their connection to the present, the Franciacorta region’s warm yet not hot conditions with light winds have long been a draw. Locally, it’s a prime spot for country homes, and in looking out from L’Albereta, you’ll see these villas punctuating the undulating, almost uniformly green landscape in all directions. L’Albereta, a Relais & Chateaux property emphasizing wellness through its spa and restaurants, mirrors these aspects with its design. Visually, it’s based on the country villas of centuries past – in fact, the property was constructed as such in the early 20th century and used by the Moretti family, its current owners, for a number of years – and aligns with the shape of the Bellavista slopes, feeling as if it’s a part of the surrounding countryside. The Moretti family turned it into a vacation spot in 1993, first opening the property with nine rooms spread across its main villa and Torre Bellavista. Carmen Moretti de Rosa, Vice Chairman of the Terra Moretti Group and Managing Director of the Terra Moretti Resorts division, came up with the concept, inspired by travels with her parents and the details going into these properties, and looped in Milanese chef Gualtiero Marchesi. 42 | www.ClienteleLuxury.com

The property continued to grow, joining the Relais & Chateaux chain in 1999, and now encompasses 57 rooms across the original country house and four other buildings. Character wise, entering the property feels as if the landscape and history are coming along, with the buildings’ neutral to warm tones, rounded edges, frescoes, pink and cream marble, and vintage furniture all reflecting Moretti’s vision. Then, the luxury emerges, through fireplaces adding a just-like-home feel, wooden poster beds, detailed parquet flooring, and whirlpools inside the guestrooms. Wherever you go, large windows let the light in, and balconies and terraces throughout allow you to look out at the vineyards, trees, and, at some angles, Lake Iseo. Wherever you are, be sure to breathe in the distinctive scents of lime and magnolia. While all of these facets alone make for a memorable vacation, those wanting the under-the-stars experience need to book room 404. Although it resembles the other rooms once you walk inside, pressing a button changes the environment immediately: The roof opens up, revealing the sky above, whether it’s filled with blue and wispy white clouds or points of light over a vast expanse of black. By morning, breakfast on the room’s private terrace only solidifies the destination’s romantic, fantastical atmosphere.

Wall-free rooms in the Safien Valley in Grisons and in Appenzellerland

Photo Credit : Toggenburg Tourism, Switzerland

“Null stern,” if you understand German, translates to “zero stars.” The Null Stern hotel – or more appropriately, a wall- and ceiling-less room in Switzerland’s Alpine region – is as far from low-rent as you can get and, rather, embodies the future of the lodging and experience industry, with a minimalist, low-waste design that’s so high in demand parent company Zero Real Estate has created a couple of offshoots. Null Stern’s creators Frank and Patrik Riklin developed the experience for travelers to appreciate the full beauty of the Swiss Alps, adding these wall-free rooms in the Safien Valley in Grisons and in Appenzellerland for the summer season. The space – a plush double bed and two nightstands, with a floor below – delivers a true 360-degree experience of tall mountains to all sides and the vast sky above. It’s basically the camping trip you remember, with far more deluxe accommodations that won’t leave you with sore muscles in 44 | www.ClienteleLuxury.com

the morning. Rounding out your experience, a butler living in a nearby cabin attends to your needs, while staff serve you breakfast and dinner in bed. A bathroom is a short walk away. Since the original concept’s success in 2016 and 2017, which garnered 4,500 reservations, Zero Real Estate expanded Null Stern to the Burst Suite in 2018, and going into the 2020 season, the space already has a waiting list. As well, Zero Real Estate has recently partnered with six Eastern Swiss tourism destinations – Toggenburg, Heidiland, St.Gallen-Bodensee, Appenzellerland AR, Thurgau, and Schaffhauserland – and the Principality of Liechtenstein to place a Null Stern room in each region, allowing guests to appreciate the beauty of the landscape in luxury for an exceptional overnight experience. Due to demand, guests considering the upcoming season are recommended to make reservations in advance.

> The Loisaba Star Beds Elewana Collection Photo Credit: Elewana Collection

Positioned on a rocky kopje within distance of a wildlife sanctuary, the Loisaba Star Beds in Laikipia, Kenya, are just as they sound: Luxurious, open-air accommodations with a view of the uniquely East African landscape and all the experiences it brings. Yet, the Star Beds are part of the Elewana Collection of boutique camps, lodges, and hotels that blend authentic safari experiences with comfortable, elegant accommodations, and this foundation sets the stage for your trip. Guests should expect traditional African hospitality, local-meets-continental cuisine, cultural experiences, and memorable wildlife-viewing. Balancing this out, Elewana operates its properties with the goal of sustainability and strengthening local communities, creating low environmental-impact operations that don’t disrupt or change the local ecosystem. The Loisaba Star Beds, first and foremost, are about the view. From where you’ll sleep, you can look out at an expansive valley home to a watering hole that attracts all types of wildlife – especially elephants, as Laikipia has the second-largest population in the country.

As you begin your stay, you’ll be greeted by a group of Samburu and Laikipiak Maasai warriors, before you make your way to your room – located in a thatched-roof space where fourpost wooden beds sit on a raised wooden platform. However, it never feels like an oddity in the surrounding landscape. Instead, natural rocky features, a sitting area, and a bathroom with a view make you feel as if you’re a part of the environment, especially when the sun rises and illuminates your room in the morning. While the room itself lets you sleep under the stars, your trip here is all about the adventure, and you’ll be able to set out on one of several Silver Eco-level experiences: game-viewing inside a 56,000-acre wildlife conservancy, expert-guided bush walks, horse riding, camel trekking, lion tracking, mountain biking, visits to the wildlife conservancy headquarters, night drives in an open-sided vehicle, fishing, and cultural experiences in the nearby Samburu village. Later, savor the private candlelit dinner on the deck of your open-plan room. ■
