Look Ahead To 2011 Women Field Veteran Team, Men Feature Many New Faces With the 2011 cross country season fast approaching, much of the program’s focus in 2011 will come to a head on Oct. 29 when Clemson plays host to the ACC Championships. For the first time in 10 years, the Tiger teams will compete for ACC cross country titles on their home soil. Also for the first time, that home soil will be located at Musser Fruit Research Center, just miles from campus. For the first time in a long time, Clemson will field a team capable of creating a buzz amongst the crowd that Saturday fall afternoon. The Tiger women’s program returns nearly everyone from a year ago, including allregion runners and team leaders Alyssa Kulik and Kim Ruck. The duo will provide a 1-2 punch for a team that has quality depth across the board – depth that could enable Clemson to make a run at an ACC crown. “We are excited to host the ACC Cross Country Championships in the fall,” said Lawrence Johnson, Clemson’s Director of Cross Country and Track & Field. “This will provide an opportunity for us to continue to showcase our new cross country course. We have a schedule that will challenge our young men and women, but we believe our kids will be up to the challenge as we continue to make progress with our distance program.” Indeed, the ACC Championships will not be the only meet on Clemson’s schedule worth keeping an eye on. Prior to the conference meet, the Tigers will compete at a pair of high-quality competitions in the Midwest – the Notre Dame Invitational and Wisconsin Invitational. Both will prepare the Clemson men’s and women’s teams for the type of challenges they expect to see at the ACC level. Ruck has been Clemson’s best cross country runner each of the past two seasons, but classmate Kulik will challenge her this fall. Ruck was the first Clemson female to advance to the NCAA Championships in cross country since 1993 when she earned a spot in the field last November. Kulik is coming off a 25th-place Southeast Region finish in cross country and a stellar track season where she was the NCAA’s fourth-place finisher in the 3000-meter steeplechase. To take the next step in 2011, Clemson’s women will need help from a variety of rookies and veterans – including Georgia Tech transfer and Upstate native Kate Borowicz. She sat out last fall, but was a two-time state champion in cross country for J.L. Mann High School in Greenville. Elyse Borisko and Sarah Turman were consistent scorers in 2010 for the Tigers, but Tiger coaches need both to take their performances to the next level. According to Brad Herbster, Clemson’s distance coach, Borisko is on the verge of a breakout season. Turman will have a long road ahead,
as she deals with a heavy academic workload in the fall. “Elyse would have great workouts in track last season, but she never quite got that confidence to where everything clicked,” Herbster said. “We hope she can make the next step and find her way.” The next group of candidates to jump into scoring position for the Tigers includes sophomores Natalie Anthony, Lisa Girard and Alyssa Henshaw. Girard had a good showing over the summer at the USA Junior Track & Field Championships in the 1500 meters. Clemson will usher in a class of seven newcomers, including red-shirt freshman Walker Marion out of Charleston, SC. Herbster feels she can be a “secret weapon” for the Tigers. Marion was on the initial 2010 roster, but opted to run with the club team last fall instead. She turned some heads by finishing sixth at the NIRCA National Cross Country Championships over a tough 6K course in Indiana. Johnson and Herbster will have far less experience to work with on the men’s side, but the Tigers will have competition for the scoring spots throughout the season. One name that will be a fixture in the lineup is sophomore Ty McCormack, who had a quality rookie year in the program. His freshman campaign closed strong with a 15th-place finish at the ACC Championships, one spot shy of an all-conference showing. “We expect big things from Ty,” Herbster said. “He can be a top-five type of guy in the ACC and make a run at an NCAA bid this year.” Clemson’s roster will take on a totally different look for the second year in a row. The team’s No. 2 runner, Chris Slate, has only track eligibility remaining. Thus, the next best options to secure spots in the lineup are sophomore Nathan Hendershot and red-shirts Martin Maloney, Tyler Ostrowski and Aaron Ramirez. Hendershot struggled last fall after only running about 30 miles per week in high school. With a year of training under his belt and a boost of confidence from solid 800-meter performances at the ACC Indoor and Outdoor Championships, he is primed for a much better 2011 season. Of the three runners that red-shirted the 2010 season, perhaps Ramirez is best equipped to contribute to the team’s success in 2011. A former Gatorade Runner-of-the-Year in the state of South Carolina, he sat out last fall but performed well on the track in the spring, particularly in the 1500 meters. Five true freshmen enter the fold this fall for the Clemson men’s team. James Dwyer of Dunwoody, GA ran 4:13 in the mile in high school. Kevin Ketner, a native of Fort Mill, SC, was the AAA state champion in cross country at Nation Ford High School. Scott Stanley, a 5K and 10K type of runner, hails from the Hoosier State. This year, we should be pretty solid through the top seven spots.”

Lawrence Johnson Director of Track & Field • Fourth Season Lawrence Johnson is in his fourth season as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at Clemson. Under his leadership, the men’s team has shown consistent progress, while the women’s program has blossomed into the ACC’s best and one of the elite-level programs in the nation. Clemson has swept the ACC indoor and outdoor team championships in women’s track & field each of the past two seasons. Johnson also swept ACC and Southeast Region Coach-of-the-Year honors in 2010 and 2011. Last season, his outdoor women’s team became the first to score over 200 points since the ACC expanded to 12 schools in 2005. Johnson’s program produced three top-25 NCAA team finishes in 2011, highlighted by the women’s team’s No. 7 standing at the national outdoor meet. He coached three NCAA individual champions - Brianna Rollins in the 60 hurdles, Miller Moss in the heptathlon, and Patricia Mamona in the outdoor triple jump. He also coached NCAA runnerup April Sinkler in the indoor triple jump and Liane Weber in the heptathlon. In just three years, Johnson has coached 57 AllAmericans and 31 ACC event champions. His athletes have been named the ACC meet most valuable performers on the track or in the field eight times - a combined seven by current team members Sinkler (5) and Stormy Kendrick (2) alone. Johnson’s athletes have continued to establish school records as the program elevates to new heights. Thirty of the current school indoor or outdoor men’s and women’s records have been set under Johnson’s watch. Clemson won the 2010 indoor crown in surprising fashion to some. The Tigers were thought to be underdogs heading into the three-day meet, but Johnson’s team dominated the event by tallying 145.5 points. Second-place Florida State had just 93. While the margin of victory was impressive, the women improved on it at the outdoor conference meet at home, winning by 53 points over the Seminoles. Under Johnson’s watch, the 2010 women’s team totaled 17 All-America performers. Ten were at the NCAA Indoor Championships, when the team tied for seventh place. It was Clemson’s highest finish since the 2001 team tied for third. The team followed with another top-20 finish in the spring, finishing 18th behind Mamona’s first national championship performance in the triple jump. In terms of individual accolades, several of Johnson’s athletes stood out in 2010. Mamona was named the ACC’s Outdoor Field Athlete-of-the-Year, while Sinkler was the league’s Meet MVP during both seasons. Weber was a first-team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American, while Mamona was named to the third team. In addition to Rollins’ indoor rookie honor, Kendrick went on to be named ACC Outdoor Freshman-of-the-Year. The 2010 season was a banner year for both individual and relay championships at the ACC level as well. Sinkler won the indoor and outdoor high jump and long jump, while Weber swept the pentathlon and heptathlon with ACC records. The Tigers capped both meets by winning a relay on the final day. Indoors, a team of four freshmen captured the 4x400 relay in dominant fashion. Outdoors, Clemson took home the 4x100 relay. Both relays went on to All-America performances at the NCAA Championships. Johnson’s ability as a coach was first displayed for the 4
Tigers at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships, where two-sport athlete Jacoby Ford won his first-ever national crown in the 60 dash. Clemson produced seven AllAmericans in his first year alone, but that only taps the surface of what Johnson was able to accomplish in his initial campaign as a Division I head coach. Ford earned three of the All-America honors by himself in 2009 and excelled in his only season within Johnson’s system. Ford established an ACC record time of 6.51 in winning the league’s 60 dash title. He also went on to win the 100 dash outdoors. Ford capped his brilliant season with an NCAA East Regional title in the 100 dash and 4x100 relay. The 4x100 relay, consisting of Ford, C.J. Spiller, Justin Murdock and Trenton Guy, experienced a level never before seen at Clemson. Johnson and Assistant Coach Tim Hall carefully put the pieces of the puzzle together, and returned home with a third-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships after establishing a school record (38.77). The group also won the school’s first-ever regional championship in Greensboro, NC. Perhaps the most visible aspect of Johnson’s impact in his first year was the turnaround experienced by the women’s team. Clemson finished third at the 2009 ACC Indoor Championships, an incredible five-spot improvement from the previous year. As it turned out, it was only a foreshadowing of things to come. Johnson personally coached three champions at the meet, Sinkler in the high jump and long jump, and Weber in the pentathlon. Sinkler was named the ACC Field MVP at the conclusion of the meet. Weber went on to earn her first-ever All-America certificate after placing sixth in the pentathlon at the NCAA Championships. Johnson, 36, was one of the top assistant coaches in collegiate track & field when approached by Clemson’s administration about the possibility of becoming the school’s next head coach. He coached the sprints, hurdles, jumps, and multi-events for the men and women at Virginia Tech. He was coming off a 2008 season in which he was named Southeast Region Assistant Coach-of-the-Year by the USTFCCCA.

Johnson’s groups were a big reason the Hokies claimed four straight ACC championships and two consecutive NCAA East Region titles on the women’s side since 200607. In 2007, he was named National Assistant Coach-ofthe-Year for women’s sprints and hurdles. In total, Johnson coached 10 NCAA All-Americans and 17 ACC champions in his four years with the Virginia Tech program. He also coached eight NCAA East Region individual champions. In 2008, he coached the Tech women’s sprinters and hurdlers to historic seasons. One of his athletes, Queen Harrison, earned a spot on the United States roster for the Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Under Johnson’s watchful eye, Harrison was the first female in Virginia Tech history to be named to a U.S. Olympic team. Also in 2008, Harrison was named Southeast Region Track Athlete-of-the-Year after setting ACC records in winning both the 100 and 400 hurdles at the NCAA East Regional in Tallahassee, FL. Harrison was also ACC champion in the 400 hurdles and runner-up in the 100 hurdles. She was an NCAA All-American indoors in the 60 hurdles. Johnson coached another sophomore to great individual success in 2008. Kristi Castlin was NCAA runner-up in the 60 hurdles during the indoor season, then ACC champion in the 100 hurdles outdoors. Prior to his four-year appointment at Virginia Tech, Johnson spent two years as an assistant at Southern Illinois. Prior to that stop, he assisted with the instruction of sprints, hurdles, and jumps at the University of Arkansas from 1999-2002. The Razorbacks won back-to-back SEC “triple crown” championships during that time. Johnson earned an undergraduate degree in kinesiology from Arkansas in 2000. He earned one varsity letter with the Razorbacks’ nationally-renowned program. As a sprinter, he helped Arkansas to four SEC indoor and outdoor championships and the 1998 NCAA Outdoor national championship. He competed under legendary coach John McDonnell, who retired in 2008 after leading Arkansas to an unprecedented 42 NCAA championships. In 1995, Johnson was a member of the “triple crown” national championship track & field team at Blinn College in Texas. He also was a 1996 South Coast Conference champion in the 400 at Long Beach City College before moving on to Arkansas. Johnson is married to the former Lilly Montgomery. The couple has four children, Desirae (16), Lawrence (10), Laniah (6), and Lukas (5).

Brad Herbster Distance Coach • Third Season Brad Herbster is in his third season as a member of Clemson’s cross country and track & field staffs. Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Lawrence Johnson added Herbster to his staff in the summer of 2009, a move that has had a tremendous impact on the program in Herbster’s first two seasons with the Tigers. Herbster is in charge of all phases of the men’s and women’s distance programs. Clemson has captured ACC championships in women’s indoor and outdoor track & field in each of the last two seasons with Herbster on the staff. The women’s team has had four straight NCAA top-20 finishes as well, culminating with a seventh-place effort at the 2011 outdoor national meet. Herbster coached junior Alyssa Kulik to an incredible 2011 outdoor season in the steeplechase. She was fourth at the NCAA Championships, earning the first All-America honor in women’s program history for the event. She was the ACC runner-up and one week later won at the prestigious Penn Relays. Kulik shaved over 40 seconds off her personal best over the course of the season, a phenomenal feat. In 2010, he coached Kim Ruck to All-America status with a seventh-place finish in the 5K at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Ruck was also the ACC’s indoor champion in the event, Clemson’s first indoor female distance champion in the conference in 17 years. Herbster coached her to a school-record time in the 5K. She also earned a bid to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 10K, finishing in 13th place. Ruck followed up with another quality season on the track in 2011. She won the ACC 10,000-meter race and was allconference indoors in the 3K and 5K. Under Herbster’s tutelage, Ruck and Kulik have experienced outstanding individual results in cross country as well. Ruck was all-region in 2009 and 2010 and All-ACC in 2009. She placed ninth at the conference meet, the highest finish by a Clemson female in 11 years. Ruck became the first Clemson female in 17 years to earn trips to all three NCAA national meets in the same calendar year when she competed at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in the fall of 2010. She earned the trip by finishing sixth at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Louisville, KY. Kulik was also all-region, finishing 25th. It was the first time in 17 years the Tiger women’s team had two all-region performers in the same cross country season. Herbster continues to make strides with the men’s distance program, too. Chris Slate was All-ACC in the 800 both indoor and outdoor in 2011. Herbster brought in a pair of impact freshmen, Nathan Hendershot and
Ty McCormack. The latter was one spot shy of an AllACC honor in cross country, while Hendershot was a fifth-place finisher outdoors in the 800 meters. Herbster, like current Clemson assistant Tim Hall, joined the Tiger coaching staff after a stint with Charlotte. Herbster coached the distance athletes for the 49er program from 2002-09. During his time with the program, he was an integral part of four straight women’s Atlantic-10 championships as well as three of the last four men’s A-10 team champions. His student-athletes earned great individual acclaim during Herbster’s tenure with the 49ers. He coached 35 conference champions (including relays) between indoor and outdoor track & field in his seven years with the program. In cross country, he mentored 28 all-conference performers, including the 2008 men’s and women’s individual champions. The 2008 cross country season was a banner one for Herbster’s athletes. The women’s team was runner-up at the A-10 meet, thanks to an individual championship by Amanda Goetschuis. She went on to also earn allregion honors and compete individually at the NCAA Cross Country Championships. On the men’s side, Herbster coached Adu Dentamo to the first-ever A-10 individual championship in Charlotte history. In 2002, Herbster’s first year, the men’s cross country team won its only Conference USA championship. Herbster was named Conference USA Coach-of-theYear in his initial campaign with the 49ers. On the track, 27 of Herbster’s conference champions came from the women’s track & field team

Charlotte swept the men’s and women’s distance medley relay at the A-10 Indoor Championships, while the women’s 4x800m relay won both indoor and outdoor crowns. Four of his individual champions in 2009 were first-time winners at the A-10 Championships. Prior to joining the Charlotte program, Herbster spent four years as a high school coach in North Carolina. He coached cross country and distance events for North Mecklenburg High School for three years. He was named Coach-of-the-Year by the Charlotte Observer in 2000-01. He produced six All-Americans and five state champions. He then spent one year at Hopewell High School in Huntersville, NC. Herbster earned his undergraduate degree from the University of South Carolina in 1991. He competed for the Gamecock cross country and track & field teams. Herbster was a three-time all-conference performer and still ranks fifth in school history on the all-time 3000m steeplechase performance list. Herbster, 42, is married to the former Deborah Akins.

Kulik, Ruck Ambassadors for Program Alyssa Kulik admittedly felt threatened by the “new girl” in the fall of 2008. Kim Ruck had just joined the Clemson cross country squad as a walk-on, while Kulik was then a prized freshman on a partial scholarship for the Tigers. “We were like, ‘Oh my gosh, this girl’s really fast,’” Kulik said of her first encounter with Ruck. “We had no idea someone could come in and just walk-on the way she did. It put us in our place a little bit.” What started out as fear has turned into a lasting friendship between Clemson’s unquestioned 2011 cross country team leaders. Kulik and Ruck studied abroad in Spain in the summer of 2009 and trained together every day, and now the two roommates enter their senior season as ambassadors for a program eager to make its mark on the ACC and national level. Ruck quickly found success, not only in cross country, but also track, culminating with an ACC championship and All-America performance in the 5000 meters as a sophomore in 2010. Determined to place herself on that elite level as well, Kulik mirrored Ruck’s development a year later. “Seeing what she (Kim) had made me want to be on that level,” Kulik said. “I started running with Kim a lot more, and then I started believing I could do it.” Kulik broke through in a major way during the 2010 cross country season by earning her first all-region accolade at the Southeast Region Championships in Louisville, KY. She followed by becoming the first All-American in Clemson women’s track history in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Together, the two seniors will be the driving force behind Clemson’s pursuit of its first NCAA Cross Country Championships bid in 18 years. Ruck sees it as an obstacle, but not an unreachable one. “Qualifying for nationals sounds intimidating, but it can be done if we just brush the fear aside,” Ruck said. “Who says it can’t be done? If someone told me four years ago that I would run track and be an All-American, in no way would I have believed them. I see this team as a ‘Sky is the limit’ situation.” For the 2011 women’s team to reach its limitless potential, Kulik and Ruck will have to lead by example to their younger, talented teammates. Both began by putting in the necessary work in the offseason. Kulik spent six weeks in Salamanca, Spain for a second time studying abroad as part of her modern languages curriculum, while Ruck and 10 of her male and female teammates traveled to Park City, UT for a team bonding trip. Brad Herbster, who joined the Tiger program as distance coach in 2009, has seen the transformation of both Kulik and Ruck from scoring contenders to potential major meet winners, and he has placed a lot of the leadership onus on his two prized pupils. “Coach tries to put us in leadership roles,” Kulik said. “We have to remind everyone that we are college athletes for a Division I school and are trying to accomplish something, so we have to be serious about it.” Ruck is in agreement with Kulik, and knows that the best way to achieve the desired result is by eliminating fear – most notably, the fear of working hard. “We want to set a standard and hold our teammates to it,” Ruck said. “They need to know we’re working hard for them, but we expect the same in return. We won’t throw down the iron fist and make anyone cry, but we are definitely going to work hard.”

2010 SEASON REVIEW Ruck Earns At-Large Spot to NCAA Nationals Clemson junior Kim Ruck was the first Tiger female in 17 years to advance to the NCAA Cross Country Championships. Ruck clocked a time of 21:17.2 and finished 90th out of 253 runners on a cold and windy Nov. 22 afternoon at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, IN. Ruck was in the thick of the lead pack at the one-mile mark before several runners started to make their move toward the front as the race moved up the hill at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center. Ruck earned a spot in the field by virtue of a sixthplace individual finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional ten days ago in Louisville, KY. She recorded a personal best at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer Park with a 6K time of 20:20.7. Ruck led the Tiger women’s team to its best finish (eighth) in over a decade at the regional meet.

Ruck Makes NCAA Field in All 2010 Seasons With her advancement to the NCAA Cross Country Championships, Ruck qualified as an individual in all three NCAA Championships in the 2010 calendar year. She finished seventh in the 5K at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in March, and then followed with a 13th-place effort in the 10K at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June. Ruck was the first Clemson female to compete in all three national meets in the same calendar year since Mareike Ressing in 1993. Ruck Wins Inaugural Clemson Invitational The cross country program played host to the Clemson Invitational, the school’s first home meet since 2006, on Sept. 17 at Musser Farms. It was a successful course debut for Kim Ruck and the Tiger women’s team, as she collected the top individual honors and led Clemson to a convincing victory in her first race of the 2010 season. Ruck posted a time of 16:47.09 and was named ACC Co-Performer-of-the-Week the following Monday for her efforts.
Clemson Women Eighth at NCAA Southeast Regional Spearheaded by Ruck’s sixth-place effort, the Tiger women’s team had a solid showing with an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional on Nov. 13. It was Clemson’s best finish since 1998, when that Tiger squad also produced an eighth-place team finish. Prior to the Nov. 13 meet, Clemson’s best regional or district meet team finish was ninth in 1999. In addition to Ruck’s effort, the Tigers received an allregion performance from Alyssa Kulik and a solid 63rdplace finish by senior Stephanie Buffo. Four of the five scorers in Clemson’s lineup, and six of the seven competitors overall, produced personal bests at E.P. “Tom” Sawyer Park in Louisville. Kulik Improvement Culminates with All-Region Effort Not to be overshadowed by Ruck’s incredible performance at the NCAA Southeast Regional meet was the remarkable turnaround experienced by Clemson junior Alyssa Kulik. One year after finishing 114th overall at the same course, the Simpsonville, SC native placed 25th in the individual 6K competition to earn all-region status for the first time in her career. She recorded a personal best with a time of 21:08.5, which was nearly two minutes better than her time from the 2009 meet at Sawyer Park. It marked the first time since 1993 that the Tiger women’s cross country team had two all-region performers at the same meet.

McCormack Led a Young Tiger Men’s Team The most consistent performer on the men’s cross country team in the fall of 2010 was freshman Ty McCormack. A heralded runner out of Gainesville, GA, McCormack was Clemson’s top finisher each time out last season. He claimed two wins on the season, the Gamecock Invitational and Charlotte Invitational. He was consistently clocked under 25 minutes in his final four 8K races.
2011 Tiger Cross Country
McCormack’s time at the ACC Championships was his best of the season. He clocked an 8K time of 24:12.5, which was a solid time on a hilly Franklin Park course in Boston. McCormack was 15th in the individual standings, just one spot shy of earning AllACC status. He went on to finish 35th at the NCAA Southeast Regionals, by far best on the team. It was his first collegiate 10K competition. Impact Newcomers Present on Both Teams Aside from stud freshman Ty McCormack, several men’s and women’s newcomers announced their presence over the course of the 2010 cross country season for Clemson. In the Tigers’ biggest regular season meet, the PreNationals, a pair of females scored in the top five for Clemson for the first time since the season opener. Alyssa Henshaw was the fourth-best finisher, while Natalie Anthony took home Clemson’s final scoring spot. It was the second scoring effort of the season for both runners. On the men’s side, Nic Tones and Nathan Hendershot both showed an ability to contribute in 2010. Tones first appeared in a race at Charlotte, finishing 26th overall and third-best on the Tiger roster. Hendershot scored for the Tigers in the first three races of the season, and at the ACC Championships and Southeast Regionals as well.
