Trips and Tours ANNA BOLENA LYRIC OPERA TOUR Anne Boleyn may be Queen of England, but she doesn’t stand a chance. Henry VIII wants her gone—with Jane Seymour taking her place on the throne and in his bed. And Henry’s minions do the dirty work, finding “proof” of Anne’s infidelities. Donizetti exploits all of the glories of the human voice in this bel canto gem and trailblazes with a theatricality that hadn’t been seen in opera before. Listen to vocal fireworks and watch one of opera’s most gripping confrontations: the Queen rages when she finally discovers that Jane is her arch rival, and Jane is haunted by guilt—desperate to marry the King, yet knowing that she’s the reason he’ll send Anne to the scaffold.

A FEW OF THE MANY FROM KIRK DOUGLAS Kirk Douglas gave movie audiences many great performances in many films, and this series will do the impossible and pick just a few. We’ll look at Douglas as a pugilist in a film considered a great one about boxing, and we’ll watch him collaborate with Stanley Kubrick as the unheeded conscience arguing against gross injustice in a jingoistic universe. We’ll also see Douglas out for justice—or is that revenge—out west. Then we’ll watch one of the actor’s personal favorites in the tragedy that results when a horse meets the man who would become Archie Bunker.

APOCALYPSE IN HOLLYWOOD The end of the world can make good box office, and this series will look at a number of films showing the end in the cinema usually means a bang–and a lot of whimpering by the people left alive when the dust settles. One film will help you answer the question of what you’d do if the last man on earth turned out to be Vincent Price. Then Charlton Heston will show he doesn’t need to part the Red Sea to be in a film with Edward G. Robinson, and Arnold Schwarzenegger makes a metaphorical comment about the Reagan era. And another film shows you can’t escape politics, not even when the end is near. 4596 CDIS 5-002 Mondays November 17 to December 8 1-3:30 p.m. $64 Room R024

discovery! THE HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY This course traces the ideas that have shaped western thought from ancient Greece to modern times. The western way of thinking which, because of its political and economic success, now predominates over other world cultures, derives from a slow and often contradictory evolution of concepts in ethics, politics, logic and religious philosophy. Some of these ideas have been so ingrained in our way of thinking that their validity goes unchallenged. In some historic instances, these unchallenged ideas have improved our lives, in others they have been disastrous to millions. PART 1 The uses of philosophy, Plato and Socrates; the humanization of politics and ethics, Aristotle; the beginnings of science.

THE RISE AND FALL OF THE BERLIN WALL, 1989-2014 – 25TH ANNIVERSARY It has been 25 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, that insurmountable icon of the Cold War. With its rise on August 13, 1961, the course of Germany’s and especially of Berlin’s history took a tragic turn. It would take 28 years, until November 9, 1989, to tear down this cruel and inhuman symbol of Germany´s division, thus giving birth to yet another period in this European nation’s evolution. Join German historian Anette Isaacs, M.A., as she presents a historical and political overview of this very painful but also almost miraculous period in Berlin’s captivating history.

THE ELECTION OF 1864 Only in America, perhaps, does the nation sit down and have an election in the middle of great national crises. And so it was that in the darkest days of the Civil War that Abraham Lincoln found himself campaigning against– and for a time, losing ground to–his own former general, George McClellan. The story of the how the deep conflicts that brought on the war played out in the political arena is one you won’t want to miss.

THE GILDED AGE: PRIVILEGE, POLITICS AND PROGRESS Between 1870-1914, post-Civil War America experienced The Gilded Age. Coined by Mark Twain in his book “The Gilded Age: A Story of Today,” Twain and co-author Charles Warner satirize the greed and political corruption found in 1870s America. A thin patina of respectability “gilded” the driving ambition of Americans to rebuild their world and fashion a new society. In the east, fantastic wealth became the measure of character as the nouveau riche climbed the ladder into the midst of the old Knickerbocker society. But the Gilded Age encompassed far more than the incredible wealth of the Astors and the Vanderbilts. The innovation, industry and politics of the time witnessed the emergence of the middle class, the labor movement and rebirth of women’s suffrage. While the unbounded wealth will dazzle you, the dynamic evolution of American society will amaze you! 4613 CDIS 74-012 Wednesdays November 5-19 1-3 p.m. $48 Room R024

YOGAPRESSURE Yogapressure is designed as a self-care class that will benefit your body and mind and give you a better understanding of the background of Chinese medicine, and how our bodies relate to the seasonal influences around us. You will learn ways to stimulate acu-points through acupressure. We start class with a brief introduction on the organ system active for the current season and ways to keep this system healthy. Gentle breathing exercises start the active portion of class and move into qi gong exercises and restorative yoga postures, which are all designed to balance the meridian system most active for the season we are in. Aromatherapy is used to help balance the body mentally and emotionally as well. These restorative exercises all lead up to an acupressure treatment designed for harmony.

This is an interactive class, so you will need to be able to get up and down from the floor. Acupressure will be done on a yoga mat with support for the spine and under the knees and no prior understanding of yoga or acupressure is needed. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat, blanket, pillow and block, if possible.
