This season marks an extraordinary moment in our history: our 50th year of performances. Since 1967, CSC has engaged the most enthralling and challenging works of the world in an active examination of what makes a classic a classic. It is a pursuit that continues to captivate us.
takes us inside the revolutionary world of the Ballets Russes, ruled by the highhanded impresario Sergei Diaghilev and his lover-star dancer Vaslav Nijinsky. Tennessee Williams’ SUMMER AND SMOKE is a poignant depiction of longing between a Southern minister’s daughter and her beloved in this passionate co-production with Transport Group.
In this year of both looking back and looking ahead, we are delighted to present a season of three distinctive acts, which we hope will both enrich and broaden your idea of the classic: Shakespeare, Americans, and Musical Theater.
Act I: Shakespeare presents two feverish journeys in search of self and belonging. With original music by award-winning composer Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Godspell), this Jazz Age AS YOU LIKE IT, a co-production with the esteemed Bay Street Theater, radiates Deco decadence and sensuality. Following suit, Fiasco Theater’s TWELFTH NIGHT is a boisterous rendering of this most enchanting of shipwreck plays. Act II: Americans gives the stage to two native talents admired for their ability to shape personal ambition and desire into something highly combustive. FIRE AND AIR, a new play by Terrence McNally,

Act III: Musical Theater features an adaptation of a European art form, opera, into something distinctly American, the musical. Featuring lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II set to Georges Bizet’s score for his 1875 opera Carmen, CARMEN JONES is a potent story of lust, grief, and violence in World War II America. This provocative show has not been seen in New York in decades, and we are excited to give it new life. This season, we also take an unqualified pride in expanding offerings for younger audiences. THE STOWAWAY (developed by the acclaimed troupe Trusty Sidekick) and JULIUS CAESAR immerse those new to the stories of Shakespeare in bold, exciting ways that rouse all the senses. We invite you to join us as we step into the next half-century of letting humanity tell the story.

In turn-of-the-century Mississippi, the local minister’s daughter walks the line between piety and sensuality with the neighborhood doctor who grew up next door. Jack Cummings III, Artistic Director of the award-winning Transport Group, helms this sultry Southern Gothic masterpiece marking Tennessee Williams’ long overdue debut at CSC.
This world premiere by Tony Award winner Terrence McNally explores the rich history of the Ballets Russes, Sergei Diaghilev’s itinerant Russian ballet company. Surrounded by great talents of art, design, and music, the tempestuous relationship between Diaghilev and dancer Vaslav Nijinsky revolutionizes dance forever. BY
