NEWSLETTER Classic AIRSTREAM Club

Fall 2010 Volume 2 Issue 7

the Airstream RV Association IntraClub of WALLY BYAM CARAVAN CLUB INTERNATIONAL OUR PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Thank you for the honor to be your Classic Airstream Club President this year. I am looking forward to seeing many of you during our planned activities this coming year. Kay Corder did an outstanding job as the CAC President last year and we owe her a special thanks for becoming the acting Treasurer when Hallie Holmes died in April. The breakfast, ice cream social and annual business meeting at Gillette were enjoyed by over 100 CAC members.

There are many plans underway for your enjoyment in 2011. In addition to our usual social events we are working on two caravans and a special rally after the Florida State Rally. The first caravan shall take place during March 2011 and will travel through the states of Texas and Louisiana. The second caravan will begin in July after the International Rally at Du Quoin, to tour the state of Illinois. Our rally will take place February 20 – 22, 2011 at Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida. Three nights of DRY camping, a two day ticket to the theme park and a luncheon are being arranged for a limited number of participants. Details of our caravans and rally will be in future issues of the CAC Newsletter. Mark your calendars now to keep these dates open. Membership continues to be a matter of great importance. There are many WBCCI members who travel in Classic Airstreams but are not CAC members. Help them find the fun and camaraderie of the Classic Airstream Club; sign them up as you see them during your travels. Also remember to keep your membership current by paying your annual dues each year. Jack Glouner CAC President

For more informations call Gordon White at 618-319-0523 Email: gwhite@midwest.net The Lincoln-Douglas Debates of 1858 were a series of seven debates between former House Representative Abraham Lincoln, the Republican candidate, and the incumbent Senator Stephen Douglas, a Democratic Party candidate, for a seat in the United States Senate. At the time, U.S. Senators were elected by state legislatures; thus Lincoln and Douglas were vying for their respective parties to win control of the Illinois legislature. The debates previewed the issues that Lincoln would face in the 1860 presidential election. The main issue discussed in all seven debates was slavery. In agreeing to the debates, Lincoln and Douglas decided to hold one debate in each of the nine congressional districts in Illinois. Because both had already spoken in two — Springfield and Chicago — within a day of each other, they decided that their "joint appearances" would be held only in the remaining seven districts. The debates were held in seven towns in the state of Illinois: Ottawa on August 21, Freeport on August 27, Jonesboro on September 15, Charleston on September 18, Galesburg on October 7, Quincy on October 13, and Alton on October 15. C LASSIC A I R S T R E A M C L U B N E W S Airstream safety recall for all “Classic” trailers built between March 2005 and April 2009 By Ed Efira

We happen to own a 2008 “Classic” so we were notified for this safety recall. We took it very seriously as it concerns the brakes and Airstream warned that the actuator might fail, potentially resulting into total loss of braking power or brake lock up, and possible deadly consequences. I made an appointment with our dealer and got on a waiting list as they had to get organized to inspect the dozens of Classics they have sold over that period (they are one of the most successful dealerships in the US). Meanwhile good friends from our unit called us while traveling back home for a completely unrelated matter. Marie mentioned the recall as a nuisance that could prevent us from attending the next rally, when they suddenly realized that they were also part of the recall ! We advised them to call Airstream because having been on the road for a while, they had not got their recent mail yet. Airstream found out that they were on the recall list, recommended that they check their brake fluid level and go to their dealer for further inspection ASAP regardless of their findings. They found out that the brake fluid container was nearly empty, so they refilled it and "limped" to their dealership. When our appointment time came up, it took about an hour and a half for our dealer to inspect the actuator (they have to take it out) and although my brake fluid level was fine, they found out that the actuator was leaky. I was lucky that they had one in stock as Airstream requests that they send back the faulty parts prior to ship them the replacements. They are pretty pricey, around $2K, if I understood well. It took them another two hours to put it in, if you add over four hours commuting back and forth in the traffic, that was quite a productive day!
