Clarence Valley Council is proud to present plunge 2015 and invite everyone to celebrate local arts, culture and creativity.
We have jam-packed plunge 2015 with opportunities for locals and visitors to soak up the many cultural experiences on offer right across the Clarence Valley. This plunge guide will help prepare for you for a journey into arts and culture in the Clarence Valley. Inside you will find more than 150 events in venues all around the Clarence Valley with something for everyone. Try learning a new craft, discover local history or experience live performance. Also new in 2015, the plunge artist trail will help you discover many local artists, museums and exhibitions showing off the extensive talent of local practitioners from across the valley. Terms and conditions The Clarence Valley Council (CVC) is the promoter of this competition which opens Wednesday 26 March and closes 5pm Sunday 26 April (EDST) and the winner will be notified on Instagram via a comment by @clarencevalleycouncil before 5pm 30th May. The prize must be claimed by 5pm Friday 20 June, 2015. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into and the prize cannot be redeemed for cash nor can it be transferred. If the prize is unclaimed by 5pm Friday 20 June 2015, CVC will determine a second winner who will be notified by Instagram. All visitors to the plunge festival during March – April 2015 are eligible to enter except employees and close family members of employees of the CVC. The promoter reserves the right to verify the validity of entries and to disqualify any entry which, in the opinion of promoter, includes objectionable content, profanity, potentially insulting, inflammatory or defamatory statements, disqualify any entrant who tampers with the entry process, who submits an entry that is not in accordance with the terms and conditions of entry or who has, in the opinion of promoter, engaged in conduct in entering the promotion which is fraudulent, misleading, deceptive or generally damaging to the goodwill or

reputation of the promotion and/or promoter. The promoter reserves the right to disqualify a winner if the promoter becomes aware that the winner and/or the winner’s entry is of a type described in this clause. The wee Scottish Town in Australia, Maclean is a rural township nestled along the banks and hills of the beautiful Clarence River, on the North Coast of New South Wales.
MACLEAN SHOWGROUND
You will find Maclean a very friendly town and very proud of its Scottish Heritage. The town has a population of 3,254, which swells to around 6,500 over the Easter weekend when people flock to the town to attend the annual Highland Games. This year the town will explode with colour, sight and sound to mark the Highland Games. The games are contested on the Maclean Showground, known as one of the most spectacular venues in the world to hold such a Highland event.

The Agricultural & Industrial Show, held at the Maclean Showgrounds in Maclean, has now become a yearly attraction where not only farmers and industry workers can present their wares but it also allows exhibitors from all walks of life to display their talents and to gain knowledge and learn from fellow exhibitors.

The Maclean Agricultural Show is held over two days. Events include: sideshows, equestrian events, trotting, exhibitions, sales displays, floral and fruit exhibits and food stalls. Lighthorse camp 2015
Anzac Day goes beyond the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day on which we remember Australians who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations.
100 Clarence Valley horsemen will be assembled at the Copmanhurst Showgrounds for an overnight camp prior to the long Lighthorse march from Copmanhurst to Grafton the following morning. Come and experience a reenactment of 100 soldiers at a lighthorse enlistment camp.
The spirit of Anzac, with its human qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity. Over three days the Clarence Valley will help remember these heroic deeds through reenactments of a Lighthorse Camp and Lighthorse March as well as parades throughout the Clarence Valley.

ANZAC centenary Lighthorse march
Clarence Valley anzac day parades
100 horsemen from throughout the Clarence Valley will leave from the Copmanhurst Showgrounds to the Grafton Showground as a reenactment of an enlistment march.
A typical Anzac Day ceremony may include the following features: an introduction, hymn, prayer, an address, laying of wreaths, a recitation, the Last Post, a period of silence, either the Rouse or the Reveille, and the national anthem. After the memorials ceremony, families often place red poppies beside the names of relatives on the Memorials Roll of Honour, as they also do after Remembrance Day services.

‘Crossing the clarence’ small works
Easter is a big weekend for Wooli. While many visitors return to one of their favourite holiday spots so does the artistic crowd with the staging of the annual Wooli Art Prize.
The Lower Clarence Arts and Crafts Association (LCACA) presents “Crossing the Clarence’ an exhibition of small works. An opening of the exhibition and presentation of prizes will be held at Ferry Park Gallery. In this group exhibition people were invited to create an art work in any art medium, within the confines of a supplied 8” x 8” canvas.
This exhibition in this coastal village attracts a huge range of art from pastels, oil, sculpture, photography and many more. The art show is a fundraiser for Coastal Communities Protection Alliance Wooli.

Chris trained at the National Art School Sydney and has had more than 60 solo and group exhibitions spanning a period of over 40 years. Chris is interested in the portrayal of ordinary living, women’s lives and domestic work. She began painting washing lines about 30 years ago and found the subject amusing and sublime. The banality of the Hills hoist holding fabric that illuminates in the sunlight, shirts billowing out with self importance and garments wild-dancing with the unseen wind, all tell a story of the everyday life.

Aboriginal Prints from Near & Far

This exhibition presents prints created by Aboriginal artists from our region and from remote communities across Australia. Until the 1990’s most prints by Aboriginal artists were produced in print workshops in the major southern cities of Australia. Many of these were printed at the Canberra School of Art, Canberra, and the Australian Print Workshop, Melbourne. Since then print workshops have also been held in remote communities across Australia by master printmakers who travel to work with the artists.
Regional artists Andrew Shillam and Rindi Salomon share an attitude influenced by Bob Dylan’s words `Not for ambition or bread’. They make art for the love of creating and not for monetary reasons.

‘in focus’ photo exhibition This competition invited Clarence Valley photographers of all levels to submit work on the theme ‘Colour’ within three photographic categories; mobile phone / smart phone; compact camera / point and shoot camera; and digital SLR / SLR / TLR camera. There were a record number of entries into this year’s competition, with a number of standout submissions. A large-scale exhibition at the Grafton Regional Gallery will feature the finalist of each category, as selected by the panel of judges. Winners of the event will be announced on the day.

ABC Open, the ABC’s community storytelling portal is excited to partner with the Plunge Festival by offering a Free photographic workshop.
Arts Northern Rivers is inviting all Aboriginal artists to join them for a Yarn Up session. The session will share an overview of their Indigenous arts program in the region including; workshops, projects and outreach services delivered by Indigenous arts development officer, Mark Cora. Yarn Up will be an opportunity for participants to give feedback and to contribute to a skills development program. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
The theme for this workshop is ‘Lines and Curves’ and will focus on important elements of photography – using line, shape, foreground, background, depth of field and the rule of thirds to improve your photography. “Be tactile” - arts workshop
LINO PRINTING
Day 1: The first day of the workshop will be a guided walk along the beach and through Iluka rainforest and finish at Iluka Emporium. The walk will focus on documenting, recording and responding to the environment and its tactile qualities to create a series of drawings. Day 2: The group will participate in creating a mixed media 2D and 3D artwork that has an environmental and ephemeral quality as well as complete postcard-size mixed media artwork exploring a variety of mixed media techniques using paper.
A one day workshop will instruct participants on the process of designing and carving a lino block. This block will be used to print at least four times with variations on paper and fabric. Participants leave with a re-usable block and at least four prints.
