Your chamber has a role in this success as it works to improve the economic well- being and quality of life for all citizens of this area. LOCATION Comprising approximately 6 9 5 square miles, Chilton County lies in the central area of the state. The Coosa River runs along the eastern edge of the county, and its tributary, Waxahatchee Creek, crosses the area. In 19 14 and 19 22 Alabama Power built two dams on the Coosa River, creating Lay Lake and Mitchell Lake. Profile’s This new section of the directory provides profiles of a few people who have made a difference for Chilton County. F rom government to commerce, from radio to the big screen, and from the chalk board to the board room, they have helped the county grow and prosper. Through their unique contributions they have made Chilton County a better place to live, work and play. Their talent, commitment and service have not only benefited our county, but also our state and nation.

H ugh M.” Lally” Bates Lally Bates moved to Chilton County with his family when he was five years old, and graduated from Chilton County H igh School at the age of seventeen. On his 18 th birthday, he joined the U nited States Marine Corp, went to boot camp at Parris Island, S.C. and was soon called to duty in the K orean conflict. H e fought in several major battles during the war earning three purple hearts and a bronze star with combat “ V ” for valor in personally destroying a North K orean machine gun emplacement. Although the evidence is otherwise, Bates says he is not a hero. H is fellow marines would disagree. After the war, Bates worked at several local businesses before he was appointed as Clanton Postmaster in 19 6 5 where he served for 3 5 years. During that time, he was president of the National Association of Postmasters twice and was the first Southerner to be elected to that position. Lally Bates has served Chilton County in a number of ways. H e was President of the Clanton Q uarterback Club, the Clanton Dixie Youth Baseball League, the Civil Defense Rescue Squad and the Chamber of Commerce twice. H e served the American Legion for 6 0 years and, for over forty years, he was the “ voice” of the Chilton County H igh School Tigers football team. After his retirement, the press box was named for him in honor of his contributions. Bates is now enjoying retirement with his wife, Janie, at their home in Clanton. 16 | Chilton County Chamber Of Commerce

Elmer H arris Born in Chilton County, Elmer H arris, a graduate of Chilton County H igh School, earned B.S. and M.S. degrees in engineering, as well as an M.B.A. from Auburn U niversity. H e soon began a 44 year career with Alabama Power Company, Alabamaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest corporation, rising to become its President and Chief Executive Officer in 19 8 9 . H e also had a 25 year military career after completing Air F orce F light School in 19 6 2. Today, he is a retired U SAF Command Pilot and Brigadier G eneral in the Alabama Air National G uard. H arris was inducted into the Alabama Engineering H all of F ame in 19 9 6 as well as the Alabama Business H all of F ame in 2007 . H arris created the Alabama Power F oundation, the largest foundation in Alabama, which is funded at $ 150 million. H e also created the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama, a group of businesses working together with state governments to win major economic development projects such as the Mercedes plant in V ance, the first Mercedes plant located outside of G ermany; the H onda plant in Lincoln; and the H yundai plant in Montgomery, creating a major automobile industry in Alabama. H arris has always been ready to promote efforts that enhance growth in our state, particularly in Chilton County. H e was instrumental in establishing a campus of Jefferson State Community College in Clanton which has proven to be a great success. H e also endowed the first Chilton Leadership Scholarship. These scholarships have allowed local students to further their education after high school. Elmer H arris has received six honorary doctoral degrees from Alabama colleges and universities, and has been given numerous honors and awards from across this state. H e remains active in church, in education, in working to promote tax reform and as Chairman or CEO of several businesses. Elmer H arris and his wife, G lenda, enjoy retirement on Logan Martin Lake near Pell City.

H elen Jenkins

H elen Charlotte Jenkins began her fifty year career at Thorsby Institute in 19 07 . She was born in 18 8 5 in South Coventry, a small township in central Connecticut. At the time of her hiring, Miss Jenkins was a recent graduate of Mount H olyoke College in H adley, Massachusetts. H er father, F rank Edwin Jenkins, was a long serving president and board member at Piedmont College in Demorest, G eorgia. H er mother, Sarah Eliza Stanley Jenkins, also devoted her life to education, working many of her later years alongside her daughter at Thorsby Institute. Thorsby Institute was an acclaimed non-denominational Christian school of higher learning located in Thorsby, Alabama. The institute opened in 19 06 , a year prior to Miss H elen Jenkins arrival. She began her career there as a Latin and G erman language instructor, but quickly rose to become associate principal. By 19 17 , she was the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s principal, a position she retained until its closing in 19 57 . As principal, she was responsible for fund raising with tuition alone not able to cover the entire costs of operation. During the school year Miss Jenkins worked with local organizations to raise operating capital while her summer months were spent seeking funding in the Northeast from Christian universities. Through these summer hiatuses, she also earned a masterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree from Syracuse U niversity. During Miss Jenkins tenure at the Institute, the town thrived and was a center of cultural activities. Miss Jenkins students, well versed in social skills, often performed plays and held recitals for local residents in the school Lyceum. With her support and encouragement, a large percentage of Thorsby Institute graduates went on to receive higher education. Many students were able to further their education due to the fact she had arranged scholarships for them at a varied list of eastern universities. Miss Jenkins remained in Thorsby, Alabama after the Institute closed and until her death on F ebruary 9 , 19 6 5. She is buried with her parents in Shadowlawn Cemetery in Lagrange, G eorgia. In 19 9 8 , the Town of Thorsby officially renamed the former Norwegian Lutheran Church, which had been a hub of activity during Miss Jenkins time of influence with the Institute and the town, in her honor as H elen Jenkins Chapel. Jimmy Parnell loves to see things grow.

Jimmy Parnell

As a beef cattle and timber farmer, the Chilton County native expanded his family’s business to 6 0 employees. As a young couple, he and his wife of 25 years, Robin, turned the Chilton County Young F armers Committee into a training ground for future leaders. Now, Parnell, 49 , is bringing that same passion for growth to his role as president of the Alabama F armers F ederation and Alfa Insurance. Parnell, who was driving a tractor by age 5 and managing the farm’s payroll by 12, credits his parents, James and Sandra, for preparing him for leadership. H e earned enough credits to graduate from high school by his junior year and graduated from Auburn U niversity with a degree in agricultural business and economics by age 20. Parnell farms in partnership with his father, James H ., and his brothers, Jeff and Joseph. Their sister, Amy, is a CPA in Selma. The farm includes brood cows, a beef stocker operation and a large timber and logging business. Robin teaches advanced nursing at Troy U niversity at Montgomery. She has a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Pensacola Christian College, a master’s from Troy U niversity at Montgomery and a doctorate from the U niversity of Alabama at Birmingham. The Parnells have two children. James Robert is in his third year at Auburn U niversity majoring in agricultural business and economics, and Anna G race is a 11th-grader at Autauga Academy. Parnell served two years as vice chairman of the State Young F armers Committee and one year as chairman. The Parnells were the F ederation’s Outstanding Young F arm F amily in 19 9 9 , and he served nine years on the state board of directors. G rayson Russell G rayson Russell, born May 1, 19 9 8 , to Jerry and Crystal Russell of Clanton, AL, is a film and television actor, best known for his roles in Talladega Nights and the Diary of a Wimpy K id film series. G rayson’s acting career began at age six, when he appeared as Cowboy G rayson in a series of television commercials for Clanton’s own, McK innon Motors. H is film career began with an open casting call for a role in Talladega Nights, The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. The Rainbow Tribe, G rayson’s second movie, filmed in 2007 , was based on a true story. The independent film won Best Picture in 2008 , at The F eel G ood F ilm F estival. In 2010, G rayson appeared in the film adaption of Jeff K inney’s Diary of a Wimpy K id as F regley. H e reprised the role in the sequels, Diary of a Wimpy K id: Rodrick Rules ( 2011) and Diary of a Wimpy K id: Dog Days ( 2012) . G rayson and his fellow cast mates twice received the “ Best Performance in a F eature F ilm – Young Ensemble Cast” Award at the Young Artist Awards in 2011 and 2013 , for their performances. G rayson’s television work includes guest appearances on Disney’s “ I’m In the Band” , and a lead role in R.L. Stein’s The H aunting H our. In 2011, he completed his first voice-over role, as the voice of Marley, in “ Marley and Me: The Puppy Years” . In 2012, G rayson had the opportunity to work in his home state of Alabama, in “ Space Warriors” . The feature film was released in theaters and to the H allmark Channel in May 2013 . In his latest endeavor, G rayson plays an autistic baseball savant named Rafer, in the 2013 feature film, Season of Miracles. When not acting, G rayson attends public school and enjoys playing guitar and singing with his church youth praise band.

Ivan F . Smith Ivan Smith has lived in Clanton since 19 45 and is a graduate of Chilton County H igh School. After getting his BS Degree in Education with a Math Major at Jacksonville State U niversity, he earned a Master of Education Degree in School Administration as well as a Master of Arts Degree in Teaching with a Major in Mathematics from the U niversity of Montevallo. Smith also received an H onorary Doctorate from F aulkner U niversity. H e is well known in Chilton County for having taught mathematics at the high school and college levels for over 50 years. Recently, in 2013 , Smith was recipient of the inaugural Adjunct F aculty Teaching Award at the U niversity of Montevallo, and was appointed by the President of the U nited States as the State Director of the Alabama Selective Service. H e may be best known for his military career that spanned over 40 years in the U .S. Army and the Alabama National G uard. After enlisting as a private in 19 52, Smith rose in the ranks to Adjutant G eneral advising the governor on military affairs and commanding the Alabama Army and Air National G uard and its more than 26 ,000 citizen soldiers and airmen. H e also served as Commander of the 20th Special F orces G roup, and retired as a Major G eneral in 19 9 5. To cap off his military career, the National G uard Armory in Clanton was designated as “ F ort Ivan F . Smith.” Major G eneral Smith is the recipient of many military decorations including two Distinguished Service Medals, the Legion of Merit, Army Commendation Medal, Master Parachutist Badge and the Special F orces Tab. Other honors earned by Smith are Eagle Scout, Silver Beaver Award, Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year, President of the Chilton County Educators Association and President of the Clanton K iwanis Club. Smith also served his home state of Alabama as State F inance Director from 19 9 2-19 9 3 . When asked, those who know Ivan Smith best describe him as: Christian, Teacher, Leader, Compassionate, H umble and Man of Integrity. Smith is married to Sue Campbell and they have three children and one grandson. H e continues as a mathematics instructor at the U niversity of Montevallo and at Jefferson State Community College in Clanton.

Service must be acquired in person during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. A minimum security deposit of $50.00 for homeowners and $75.00 for renters. If a meter is to be installed a deposit of $350.00 is

required. Water Service for Thorsby is provided by the Town of Thorsby located at 21060 U.S. Hwy. 31. 6463575. Service must be acquired in person during the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 12: noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. A minimum deposit of $50.00 for homeowners, $75.00 if you own your mobile home and land, and $150.00 for renters or lease to purchase is required. Sewage charge is based on one-half of the water bill. Garbage Collection within Clanton, Jemison, Thorsby, or Maplesville is provided by the respective city. GAS SERVICE is provided by several propane companies or natural gas by Alagasco. Alagasco may be contacted at 1-800-292-4005 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon

DRIVER’S LICENSE: You are required to get an Alabama Driver’s License upon establishing residence. The Driver’s License Examiner’s Office is located at the Chilton County Courthouse. Written exam hours are 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. Monday and Tuesday. Road tests are from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. Out-of-State residents must turn in their present license, take the eye test and written test to obtain an Alabama Driver’s License. Persons fifteen years of age may take the eye test and written test to obtain a Learners Permit License (restricted). There is a $5.00 cash (correct amount only) charge for these services. After passing these tests you will be given a slip by the examiner. The slip must be taken to the Probate Judge’s Office in the Chilton County Courthouse where your license will be issued.
