WELCOME Dear Friends, Tonight we celebrate community. Even though we are not physically together, we assemble in our virtual way to champion an ephemeral art form that utilizes community as its primary tool for expression. Rest assured, the community that is being kept so painfully apart is comprised of artistic warriors who will come back together more ready than ever to make their art and remind us all of the profound power of human connection. I hope you will join me in taking a few moments to honor our choreographers and let them know that DLNY will be here for them once this storm passes. Soon there will be dancers to hire, rooms to rent, and dances to be made. In this “virtual gala” we share with you a year of growth that was filledwith three Lab Cycles, our one-of-a-kind Broadway Choreography Intensive, and our DLNY Connect mentorship initiative. In the spirit of fostering community, I am also proud that DLNY successfully launched three new collaborations this year! You can learn more about them in our videos and throughout this beautiful program book. I hope they will make you proud to be a part of our mission. Join us in continuing to build strong and lasting relationships with our fellow dance companies, presenters, and residency programs. josh prince Founding Artistic Director
Josh Prince began his career as an actor after graduating from the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music. He went on to appear on Broadway in Little Me and Saturday Night Fever, as well as perform in numerous regional theater productions and concerts. Before turning his attention to choreography, he also appeared Off-Broadway in Forbidden Broadway, toured the country in CATS, and starred as “Carmen Ghia” in The Producers opposite Jason Alexander and Martin Short at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles. In 2006, Josh made his Broadway choreographic debut with Shrek, The Musical (Outer Critics Circle Nomination), which opened in December of 2008 and went on to tour the US, play in London’s West End, and tour the UK. He has choreographed shows at prestigious venues across the US and UK, including New York City Center, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, The Kennedy Center, The Signature Theatre (DC), BAM, The New Group, The Old Vic, Royal Festival Hall, and The Royal Albert Hall. Josh choreographed a new adaptation of the animated film, Frozen, for Disney Cruise Lines, and made his directorial debut with Grease at the Winter Garden Theater in Toronto, CA. He is the choreographer of the new musical, Trevor, with director, Marc Bruni, and is currently collaborating with Tony-nominated director, Sheryl Kaller, on two new musicals, A Walk On The Moon and Bliss. Josh is the proud choreographer of the award-winning hit Broadway show, Beautiful - The Carole King Musical (Olivier, Helpmann, and Astaire Award nominations), which ran for six years at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre and toured the US, UK, Japan, and Australia.

In the fall of 2019, Dance Lab New York partnered with The Joyce Theater Foundation to create a one-of-a-kind choreographic lab for four female choreographers to explore the classical, neoclassical, and contemporary ballet idioms. The Lab culminated with a Guggenheim Works & Process showing on November 10, 2019.
AMY HALL GARNER is a graduate of the Juilliard School, and an internationally known choreographer based in New York City. Amy has received the Joffrey Ballet’s Choreography of Color Award, served as associate choreographer for the Off-Broadway musical Invisible Thread, and coached Grammy Award-winner BeyoncÊ, providing additional choreography for The Mrs. Carter Show World Tour.
MARGARITA ARMAS is a Miami, FL native, featured in the second season of Teen Vogue’s Strictly Ballet Series. She was the recipient of the Silver Award in the 2018 YoungArts Ballet Category. She is currently training in Seattle, Washington at the Pacific Northwest Ballet School Professional Division program.

PREETI VASUDEVAN is an award-winning Indian choreographer, performer, and educator. Preeti is an exponent of classical Indian dance (Bharatanatyam) creating new provocative contemporary works from the Indian tradition. She is the recipient of the Virginia B. Toulmin Fellowship; Lincoln Center Award; Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) Selected Artist; Jerome Robbins Dance Division Research Fellowship.
COURTNEY COCHRAN trained with Sacramento Ballet and Crockett Deane Ballet, where she was selected as an emerging choreographer at the 2008 Regional Dance America Festival. Courtney continued her training with Alonzo King LINES BFA Program and Dance Theatre of Harlem’s Professional Training Program. Courtney spent four seasons with Brooklyn Ballet and has been a guest artist with Dance Theatre of Harlem, Sierra Nevada Ballet, and The Black Iris Project.

DLNY is excited to announce our upcoming 2020 Pocantico resident, Gabrielle Lamb.
In the Summer of 2019, DLNY partnered with The Rockefeller Brothers Fund Pocantico Center to give Ephrat Asherie two weeks of creative incubation with our company of 12 dancers. The first week took place in the heart of Manhattan, the second in the idyllic Pocantico Historic Area.
Ephrat “Bounce” Asherie is a New York City-based b-girl, dancer, and choreographer and a 2016 Bessie Award Winner for Innovative Achievement in Dance. As Artistic Director of Ephrat Asherie Dance (EAD) she has presented work at The Apollo Theater, Columbia College, Dixon Place, FiraTarrega, Guggenheim Works & Process, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, La MaMa, River to River Festival, New York Live Arts, Summerstage and The Yard, among others. Asherie has received numerous awards to support her work including Dance Magazine’s Inaugural Harkness Promise Award, the Jacob’s Pillow Fellowship at the Tilles Center for the Performing Arts at LIU and a Jerome Foundation Travel and Study Grant. She earned her BA from Barnard College, Columbia University in Italian and her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where she researched the vernacular jazz dance roots of contemporary street and club dances.

JOSHUA BEAMISH is the Artistic Director of Joshua Beamish/MOVETHECOMPANY, a contemporary dance organization founded in 2005. He has created for The Royal Ballet, The National Ballet of Canada, Cape Town Opera, New York City Ballet Associate Artistic Director Wendy Whelan’s Restless Creature, Compania Nacional de Danza de Mexico, and Cirque du Soleil for World EXPO Shanghai, among many others. He was a founding member of The Joyce Theater’s Young Leader’s Circle Committee, and is an alumni of the NY Choreographic Institute.

YOSHITO SAKURABA is an award-winning choreographer and the founding artistic director of Abarukas. His work has been seen in Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain, Israel, Mexico, and the US. He won the International Choreographic Competition at NW Dance Project and Choreographic Shindig at Whim W’Him in the US. He has been commissioned by PCDC, Bayerishes Staatsballet, Ballet Arkansas, Ballet Des Moines II, Nimbus, Litvak, Graham II, Alvin Ailey/ Fordham BFA, Peabody at Johns Hopkins University, Interlochen Center for the Arts, numerous dance festivals, and more.

LAB CYCLE Our core program at DLNY is the Lab Cycle in which we grant choreographers one week of free exploration with a company of 12 professional dancers who are secured with competitive salaries and insurances. Choreographers are also provided a Rehearsal Director and support from DLNY staff to alleviate all administrative burdens. At DLNY, no idea is off-limits and the grant comes with “no strings attached.� The DLNY Lab Cycle provides a structured, professional environment that encourages experimentation, collaboration, and the risk-taking needed for true creative discovery. DLNY operates three Lab Cycles per year Spring, Summer, and Fall.

BROADWAY CHOREOGRAPHY INTENSIVE The Broadway Choreography Intensive (BCI) is a truly oneof-a-kind program designed to give aspiring musical theatre choreographers (ages 18-29) unparalleled access to training from Broadway professionals. At BCI, students study various choreographic techniques and attend lectures, talkbacks, and styles classes. They are then given the chance to apply what they learned while being mentored in the creation of their own work. Participants are given special access to The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Broadway shows, receive backstage tours, talkbacks, and more! 2020 DATES ANNOUNCED! August 3-15, 2020
ALCHEMY PROJECTS Alchemy Projects represent our collaborations with other arts institutions. By combining resources, DLNY and other arts organizations provide access and increased visibility for dance makers. BESPOKE Bespoke Labs were created to help creative teams achieve a tailor-made lab by utilizing our unique model for pre-production. DLNY offers technical support, general management services and casting, specifically for the incubation of dance and choreographic elements in a production—be that a musical, ballet, opera, play, commercial, movie, immersive show, concert, etc. Although still in its infancy, DLNY has already hosted Bespoke Labs for Regional, Off-Broadway, and Pre-Broadway musicals.
