Resume Comuniy’s water scope is to improve the usage of Santa Marta’s spring water, creating ways to maximize the utilization of this resource and to ensure that the contact with the spring water is safe. The project is a redesign of the “mina”, a place where the river water is piped and that the residents use as a community laundry, to take showers and to collect water for household use.

Motivation Improving peoples quality of life on poor comunities by focusing on the problems found by their residents in accessing and distributing water to their homes.

The slum: Morro Santa Marta The comunity chosen was Santa Marta, a slum at Botafogo, a midle-class neigbourhood in Rio de Janeiro. Besides having no violence and drug-dealing problems for 5 years, this slum allows easy access for the students.

Field research In the first visits to the slum, the students were able to understand how people deal with water, and which are the available water supplies and the problems related to water the comunity faces.

humidity and leaks At Santa Marta it seams there is water everywhere, everything looks wet all the time. There are many leaks, slime and infiltrations at the houses.

Field research

ditchs and garbage Most of the houses aren’t connected to a drainage, and the water goes down in open ditchs. Those ditchs are full of garbage and people has to protect their houses when it rains.

Attention: don’t throw garbage in the ditchs. Keep this place clean.

Field research lack of water

Even though the treated water from cedae gets to most of the houses, the supplie is not regular and people has to colect water from alternative sources.

Problem chosen

redesign of the “mina” The mina (well) is a place where water from the natural springs on the hill is piped. Santa Marta’s residents use this water to wash clothes and dishes, take showers and play.

Redesignin of the “mina”

some observations of the usage

People use lots of different buckets in different sizes. The stone is used to rub the stains out of the clothes. The current table could be wider.

Extra water from an external point is used. This source is more flexible, bring the water to the bucket instead of bringing the bucket to the water. It shows that one water distribution point is not enough when multiple people are washing clothes.

Redesignin of the “mina”

some observations of the usage

When a bucket is filled with water, it can be heavy to put on the table. The table is too high and the ground floor is too low for soaking the clothes.

The watersource is placed too high to fill a big bottle.

Redesignin of the “mina”

potability test and water flux measurement A sample of water from the mina was tested by INea - Instituto Estatual do Ambiente (Rio de Janeiro State Institute of Environment). The results are: total coliforms: 800 (ufc/100 ml) escherichia coli : 110 (ufc/100 ml) The students measured the water flux of the mina, by timing how long it takes to fill a 2L recipient. The water flux measured was 40L/min - 57600L/day
