ANTI-OXIDANTS

When he was awarded his first Nobel Prize in 1954, the academy cited his seminal work on the nature of the chemical bond and the structure of molecules and crystals. They also acknowledged his application of the resulting concepts to the elucidation of the structure of proteins, specifically the alpha helix. Dr. Pauling’s groundbreaking discoveries set the stage for researchers who would follow him, including Dr. Harvey Ashmead – a pioneer in the fields of chelated minerals and amino acids. Pauling also showed that Anti-Oxidants play an important role in combating the aging process by ridding the body of cell-damaging, free radical molecules. In the skin of the average smoker, one can see the result of the absence of Anti-Oxidants and cumulative oxidative stress. Essentially self-induced pollution of the body, smoking is one of the largest contributors to oxidative stress and free radical damage resulting from a lack of Anti-Oxidants (vitamins) and essential minerals in the body. In 1994, when Craig Keeland visited Dr. Pauling at his home in Big Sur, California, Pauling acknowledged Dr. Payne’s and Dr. Leaf’s accounts of Vilcabamba. Pauling confirmed his belief that the Vilcabambans’ excellent health was certainly a result of their diets, which included an abundance of Vitamin C and other Anti-Oxidants. Much of Pauling’s lifework combined the dedication and knowledge of the scientist with a deep humanitarian commitment and his own operating principle of minimizing suffering. It was this dedication to improving the lives of everyone he touched that inspired Dr. Richard Cutler to set similar goals and pursue a career in Anti-Oxidant research. Dr. Richard Cutler When Dr. Cutler was hired by the National Institute on Aging as their leading chemist in 1976, he had no idea that one day he would be considered “The Father of Anti-Oxidants.” After 16 years of research at the institute and a continued career in Oxidative Stress Research, Dr. Cutler’s work has been the catalyst for what has been deemed the Anti-Oxidant Revolution. In fact, in 1997, Dr. Cutler and Dr. Pauling shared the Infinity Award from the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. © 2009 GP Publishing - All Rights Reserved
