ALLIED WORKS ARCHITECTS GRADUATE TERMINAL STUDIO Bound within are the works and thought process developed in my final terminal design studio. Beginning in the fall of 2009 and culminating in the spring of 2010 the studio focused on Portland Oregon’s Rose Quarter. Integral to the studio was an in depth look into the making and craft of creating “capital A” Architecture. In addition to formulating a new urban design concept for the Rose Quarter we were asked to designed a new type of institution. This institution was deemed the Music Innovation Center, and it set out to combine performance, collections, and education spaces into a new type of experience. I began with the formation of a thought process upon which my design concepts could grow. Vital to the intent of the studio, I then worked to develop a strong and concise central concept to which I then systematically explained and visualized. In the end the visceral and emotional qualities of the spaces and structure created are the defining aspects of the project. Visitors are lead on a procession of sensory experiences that transform, focus, and alter perceptions. Author Casey Kent M. WHAT IS IT The Portland Music Innovation Center is a new type of building. Blending performance, education, and collections the institution provides a in depth look into Portland’s music culture. From the roots of the past to flashes in to the future, the Portland Music Innovation Center provides an array of extraordinary sensory experiences sure to heighten ones perception and awareness of the unique and incredibly rich sub culture that comprises an integral part of Portland Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. THE ORGANIZATIONAL STRATEGY The Portland Music Innovation Center is conceived from four organizational strategies combined to create one new innovative institution - The corkscrew of Portland specific music collections - The anchoring of twin civic performance places - Field distributed pockets of educational spaces - The random occurrence of sensory experiences The simple form of the spiral interacting with a field of scattered points make the PMIC both diligent and lively. The curious tourist, the third geration Portlander, and casual game day visitor will all find a new appreciation of Portlands music culture. Through a series of sensory heightening experiences visitors from all walks of life will leave the PMIC with preconceptions forever altered.

THE ROSE QUARTER Perhaps the most identifiable region with-in the Portland metro area, the Rose Quarter is home to two both Memorial Coliseum and the Rose Garden Arena, two of the most iconic buildings in the city. Situated at the crossroads of transit, entertainment, and fledgeling urban fabric the current state of the Rose Quarter is bleak at best. Today the Rose Quarter is essentially a urban island cut off from much of its immediate context and dependent upon large scripted events to maintain its viability. While it is true that the Rose Quarter remains vacant for large portions of the day it is important to note that the in the 2008 calender year the Rose Quarter hosted more people on its grounds than any other venue in the world. With such global visibility it is the hope of this project that through the use of program, this critical mass will be absorbed and informed, activating the site throughout all hours of the day and transforming this entertainment district in to a Portland cultural asset envious of the region and nation alike.

Providing a sight and sound sampling of PDX and the region, the Portland Music Innovation Center unites culture, education, and entertainment as only music can.

Calling upon the rich musical history that was Jumptown the building educates visitors in the past and speaks to the current and now through interactive exhibitions and live feeds from throughout the region.

Acting as a civic amenity in the sense that the building provides a service to the community, whether visited or not, the Portland music and innovation center begins to span traditional physical media with emerging social medias.

The duality of stone and steel make up the structural and material systems for the Music Innovation Center. As visitors perceptions are heightened and ones understanding of the Portland underground music culture becomes more clear, so do the buildings material and structural expression. Raw materials change into finely crafted ones and structure shifts from monolithic to tensile. Corten evolves into stainless steel cable and rough boulders transform into glass. All through the building the duality of the stone and steel are percent, yet through ones experience and procession with the MIC the qualities of the materials begin to transcend.

The Portland Music Innovation Center is a new type of building. Blending performance, education, and collections the institution provides a indepth look into Portland’s music culture. From the roots of the past to flashes in to the future, the Portland Music Innovation Center provides an array of extraordinary sensory experiences sure to heighten ones perception and awareness of the unique and incredibly rich sub culture that comprises an integral part of Portland Oregon and the Pacific Northwest.

ORGANIZATIONAL STRATEGY

The Portland Music Innovation Center is conceived from four organizational strategies combined to create one new innovative institution -

The corkscrew of Portland specific music collections The anchoring of twin civic performance places Field distributed pockets of educational spaces The random occurance of sensory experiences

The simple form of the spiral interacting with a field of scattered points make the PMIC both diligent and livley. The curious tourist, the third geration Portlander, and casual game day visitor will all find a new appreciation of Portlands music culture. Through a series of sensory heightening experiences visitors from all walks of life will leave the PMIC with preconseptions forever altered.

THE ROSE QUARTER

Perhaps the most identifiable region with-in the Portland metro area, the Rose Quarter is home to two both Memorial Colosium and the Rose Garden Arena, two of the most iconic buildings in the city. Situated at the crossroads of transit, entertainment, and fledgeling urban fabric the current state of the Rose Quarter is bleak at best. Today the Rose Quarter is essentially a urban island cut off from much of its immediate context and dependent upon large scripted events to maintain its viability. While it is true that the Rose Quarter remains vacant for large portions of the day it is important to note that the in the 2008 calender year the Rose Quarter hosted more people on its grounds than any other venue in the world. With such global visibility it is the hope of this project that through the use of program, this critical mass will be absorbed and informed, activating the site throughout all hours of the day and transforming this entertainment district in to a Portland cultural asset envious of the region and nation alike.

With the completion of last nights review we are officially half way done! I am 5/6th of the way complete to becoming a master!! Critique was overall very good last night. I escaped the shredding that a few of my peers happen to encounter! Comments were as follows. Brad noted that the analytical work that has gone into my concept is really clear. He did note that I really need a in between program diagram. Something to span the gap between my plans and my form finding diagrams. Brent noted that I have clarity in my intent but that my drawings that represent the movement from solidity to transparency are struggling. He understands the pit to some extent, to create further separation from the site, but is not sure that the massing or experience in circulation through the site are successful yet. The pit is only a single move as of now, it is always adjacent to the two spirals as well, it has no program or occupant designation. I need to get more specific on how occupants enter my building. My perspective is very clear. Brad, thinks that if I took the pit as a transition place it could be really clear and successful. A step down from the plaza level and then on down to the street. A juror thought that I should concentrate on looking at the smoothness of the landscape transition, the tectonics and the the consequences of my actions. I should look at the language of my earth works. Looking at the difference between a amphitheater or a retaining wall ect. Need to diagram what i am getting out of my diagraming. This is the formal operation, and then this is what it got me. This will add clarity. Revise the organigram to illustrate the three arms better. One juror had issue with the burm that I have created on the southwest edge of the site. He likes the idea of adding program to the RQ. He does not see that the burm makes it a

With the completion of last nights review we are officially half way done! I am 5/6th of the way complete to becoming a master!! Critique was overall very good last night. I escaped the shredding that a few of my peers happen to encounter! Comments were as follows. Brad noted that the analytical work that has gone into my concept is really clear. He did note that I really need a in between program diagram. Something to span the gap between my plans and my form finding diagrams. Brent noted that I have clarity in my intent but that my drawings that represent the movement from solidity to transparency are struggling. He understands the pit to some extent, to create further separation from the site, but is not sure that the massing or experience in circulation through the site are successful yet. The pit is only a single move as of now, it is always adjacent to the two spirals as well, it has no program or occupant designation. I need to get more specific on how occupants enter my building. My perspective is very clear. Brad, thinks that if I took the pit as a transition place it could be really clear and successful. A step down from the plaza level and then on down to the street. A juror thought that I should concentrate on looking at the smoothness of the landscape transition, the tectonics and the the consequences of my actions. I should look at the language of my earth works. Looking at the difference between a amphitheater or a retaining wall ect. Need to diagram what i am getting out of my diagraming.

This is the formal operation, and then this is what it got me. This will add clarity. Revise the organigram to illustrate the three arms better. One juror had issue with the burm that I have created on the southwest edge of the site. He likes the idea of adding program to the RQ. He does not see that the burm makes it a better place. My diagraming also seem to come off very clear but are confusing. Not sure why. Thinks that they compete with each other. It comes off as being reversed engineered rather than setting up principles that will be used.

Need to build a model to illustrate how everything is working. I need to come up with a hybrid to explain my project. Plans may not be able to illustrate my ideas. Read YES, its a comic book as manifesto of architecture. Look at connecting the diagram with what I am referring from them. I need to embed the action of the spaces in the diagrams themselves. I should pause in-between each action and contemplate its implications on the design. I as the designer need to put my foot down at some point and not just accommodate all of the outside forces.

THE ROSE QUARTER

Perhaps the most identifiable region with-in the Portland metro area, the Rose Quarter is home to two both Memorial Colosium and the Rose Garden Arena, two of the most iconic buildings in the city. Situated at the crossroads of transit, entertainment, and fledgeling urban fabric the current state of the Rose Quarter is bleak at best. Today the Rose Quarter is essentially a urban island cut off from much of its immediate context and dependent upon large scripted events to maintain its viability. While it is true that the Rose Quarter remains vacant for large portions of the day it is important to note that the in the 2008 calender year the Rose Quarter hosted more people on its grounds than any other venue in the world. With such global visibility it is the hope of this project that through the use of program, this critical mass will be absorbed and informed, activating the site throughout all hours of the day and transforming this entertainment district in to a Portland cultural asset envious of the region and nation alike.

PMIC

PORTLAND MUSIC INNOVATION CENTER WHAT IS IT

The Portland Music Innovation Center is a new type of building. Blending performance, education, and collections the institution provides a indepth look into Portland’s music culture. From the roots of the past to flashes in to the future, the Portland Music Innovation Center provides an array of extraordinary sensory experiences sure to heighten ones perception and awareness of the unique and incredibly rich sub culture that comprises an integral part of Portland Oregon and the Pacific Northwest.

The Portland Music Innovation Center is conceived from four organizational strategies combined to create one new innovative institution - The corkscrew of Portland specific music collections - The anchoring of twin civic performance places - Field distributed pockets of educational spaces - The random occurance of sensory experiences

The simple form of the spiral interacting with a field of scattered points make the PMIC both diligent and livley. The curious tourist, the third geration Portlander, and casual game day visitor will all find a new appreciation of Portlands music culture. Through a series of sensory heightening experiences visitors from all walks of life will leave the PMIC with preconseptions forever altered. subtractive

THE ROSE QUARTER

Perhaps the most identifiable region with-in the Portland metro area, the Rose Quarter is home to two both Memorial Colosium and the Rose Garden Arena, two of the most iconic buildings in the city. Situated at the crossroads of transit, entertainment, and fledgeling urban fabric the current state of the Rose Quarter is bleak at best. Today the Rose Quarter is essentially a urban island cut off from much of its immediate context and dependent upon large scripted events to maintain its viability. While it is true that the Rose Quarter remains vacant for large portions of the day it is important to note that the in the 2008 calender year the Rose Quarter hosted more people on its grounds than any other venue in the world. With such global visibility it is the hope of this project that through the use of program, this critical mass will be absorbed and informed, activating the site throughout all hours of the day and transforming this entertainment district in to a Portland cultural asset envious of the region and nation alike.

Providing a sight and sound sampling of PDX and the region, the Portland Music Innovation Center unites culture, education, and entertainment as only music can.

Acting as a civic amenity in the sense that the building provides a service to the community, whether visited or not, the Portland music and innovation center begins to span traditional physical media with emerging social medias.

Calling upon the rich musical history that was Jumptown the building educates visitors in the past and speaks to the current and now through interactive exhibitions and live feeds from throughout the region.
