50 years at 750 White Pond

Page 1

1973-2023

As event Chairpersons for the 50th Anniversary of the Shaw JCC at 750 White Pond Drive, we were honored to serve in this leadership role to both commemorate and celebrate this historic milestone. We greatly appreciated the hard work, dedication and perseverance of our entire committee and JCC sta , as well as sponsors, donors and attendees who made this celebration possible and contributed to its success.

The JCC has been an important part of our family dating back to my grandparents and my father, Stanley Bober who served as the first President of the JCC at White Pond Drive (1973-1975) and Mark as JCC President (2006-2008). Esther Bober and Lyn served as Women’s Auxiliary Presidents. Further, our children Justin and Claire grew up on the Schultz campus and benefitted from the JCC’s Early Childhood Education, Summer Camp, various events, sports activities, programs, and also attended the Lippman Day School. As adults, both Justin and Claire worked as summer camp counselors, and Claire is starting a teaching position with ECE this fall. We are extremely proud of their volunteerism, philanthropy and continuing our family’s legacy.

In terms of staying involved in the JCC and the Jewish Community, the following excerpt from Stan Bober’s President’s Message from January 30, 1975 in the Akron Jewish News upon completion of his term resonates with us today and sets the tone for our family’s continued involvement:

“I am writing this just after our Board Meeting of January 12, 1975. Technically I am not now President of the Center. I plan to be involved in our Center’s operations forever. I don’t know that an ex-president has any other alternative. I know that Stan Bober has no other alternative. So I ask you, as just another member of the Center now, to join with me in a united e ort to make our Center a continuing source of strength and a continuing force for a stronger and stronger Jewish community - - for ourselves and for our children.”

This is the legacy Stan Bober instilled in us, that we are proud to carry forward and set an example for our children and future generations. Our Akron Jewish Community should be proud of what we have accomplished thus far, and it is up to each and every one of us to support the Shaw JCC and continue this legacy for the next 50 years and beyond.

September 10, 2023

We are thankful for the outpouring of support and love for the Shaw JCC, located on the beautiful Schultz Campus and powered by JewishAkron. Our Jewish community leaders had the insight over 50 years ago to build a campus that would fit our needs then and well into our future. Our 50th birthday celebration is a testament to them, our Jewish community leaders today, and to our entire JCC community. Today is not a celebration of a building, but a celebration of the kind, giving and wonderfully inclusive community that we built over the past 50 years at 750 White Pond Drive!

Fifty years ago, this community decided to move the JCC from Balch Street to White Pond Drive. Since then, this campus has become the community gathering place for everyone -- from infants to seniors. Every day our building is inundated with people of all ages, genders, colors, and religions taking advantage of our vast array of services, classes and programming. This diversity is our strength, built on deeply rooted Jewish values. Your tour of our building tonight gave you just a glimpse of what we do every day for all people. It is our privilege and honor to serve all in our community.

This wonderful evening would not have occurred without the dedicated leadership of our honorary chairs Sheri and Stuart Glauberman and our event committee chairs Lyn and Mark Bober. An extra special thanks to Judi Shapiro and the sta of the Shaw JCC for everything each of them did to make tonight special and memorable, and everything they do daily as they serve our members and community with integrity and kindness.

We look forward to many more celebrations over the decades to come, as we watch our community flourish with each new achievement. You are what makes the Shaw JCC great, you are what makes us a community.

With much love and appreciation,

MAZEL TOV on 50 YEARS!

“I share with many, the confident hope that the JCC will continue to serve our community with an even greater e ectiveness. Many dedicated people have been instrumental in bringing us to this point in our history. We owe them so much. Let us all repay them by supporting the Jewish Community Center of Akron.”

Sheri and I are thrilled to be the honorary chairs for this spectacular celebration commemorating the 50th anniversary of 750 White Pond. We are celebrating a Jewish Community Campus that was created by the vision of the leadership in the 1960’s. We stand on the shoulders of those daring community leaders who took the initiative to create a Jewish Campus at White Pond.

Our father did not do it alone, we recall stories about how the community rallied around the opportunity to create a new JCC at 750 White Pond. This building was originally funded by small donations from a majority of our JCC members. This photo of the groundbreaking includes many community members that were instrumental in the creation of this new home.

Moving to Akron in 1952 four generations of our family have seen their lives enriched while having the opportunity to serve our community in numerous capacities. Murray, Jay and Stuart have served as the JCC Board President.

Today our children Seth, Nora and Lauren have taken leadership roles in our community while our four grandchildren graduated from the ECE Preschool and today attend The Lippman School.

How could our Dad Murray ever imagine the role the Campus would play in the lives of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren?

Thank you for letting us be a small part in furthering the legacy that was once just a dream of the leaders of our community.

Sheri and Stuart Glauberman

The History of the Shaw Jewish Community Center at 750 White Pond Drive

The history of the Shaw Jewish Community Center at 750 White Pond Drive didn’t begin 50 years ago in 1973 when the building was completed.

It began in the mid-1800’s when the bravest, most adventuresome and determined European Jewish immigrants decided to make the long, hard trip west along the Ohio and Erie Canal and settled in Akron, Ohio. Bringing all their worldly possessions and an inherent entrepreneurial spirit with them, they became tradesmen, shop owners, landowners, and community leaders.

In 1865, a group of 20 men organized the Akron Hebrew Association which later became Temple Israel. In 1920, the Akron YM and YWHA developed from a Junior Council of the Akron Hebrew Association.

In 1922, it was proposed that Akron should have a Jewish Community Center, and in 1924 the JCC was formally established, with construction completed in 1929 at 220 Balch Street.

In the early 1900s, more than 100,000 Jews per year were coming to America… the Jewish population of Akron continued to grow along with Jewish communities throughout Ohio.

While the Balch Street Jewish Center was booming, the JCC struggled to maintain the building and get out of debt (sound familiar?). In the 1940’s the community united behind the JCC and the debt was eliminated. Membership continued to grow and through the generosity of the Morris Sacks Memorial Fund and the vision of the JCC leadership, a 48-acre tract of land was purchased on White Pond Drive, which is still dedicated today to the memory of Morris Sacks.

In 1959, plans were announced to use the White Pond property for a day camp and in 1961 the camp moved to 750 White Pond. The years flew by and at its peak in the 1960’s, the Akron Jewish community numbered about 6,500. In 1967, Mel Sacks, the JCC President, appointed Bernie Rosen and Lou Myers as Co-Chairs of the Future Facilities Committee. In 1969, Murray Glauberman, President of the Board of Trustees, invited the entire community to share the “Dream” of a new building at 750 White Pond Drive.

The Future Planning Committee, headed by Mel Sacks and Murray Glauberman, retained Bialosky and Manders as Architects. Soon after, committees were organized, and the entire community was invited to participate in the planning process. In 1971, with permission of the United Fund, a Capital Campaign chaired by Louis Myers and Julius Darsky was launched. That year Murray Glauberman assumed the position of Chair of the Building Construction Committee. Ultimately, over 1,000 people attended the O cial Groundbreaking on July 23, 1972.

The building doors o cially opened in 1973 with incremental beginnings of programming and operations. Stan Bober was the first President to serve in the new building. Since that day, in part due to the generosity of Jerry and Patsy Shaw, the Shaw Jewish Center has survived economic struggles, the decrease of Jewish population and, more recently Covid to become the premier community center in the greater Akron area.

Over the past 50 years, the Center has been the home of numerous nationally recognized programs: Women’s Auxiliary; the Maccabi Games; Women’s Day and Women’s Auxiliary; Theater Guild productions; Purim Ball; social activities; health and wellness classes; aquatics; and a highly regarded Early Childhood Education and Day Camp program.

Nearly 100 years later, the words of Charlie Schwartz, the Center’s first President, ring as true today as they did in 1929. “We wanted to build an institution which would be the home of all of our people regardless… in the belief that the heritage that binds us together is of much more importance the di erences that exist between us.” Then, as today, the Jewish Community Center is committed to being a unifying force in our greater Akron community, serving a diverse population on a daily basis.

Our gratitude to those whose vision and dedication preceded us and made it possible for us to be here today is beyond words.

Fifty years later, in 2023, the Shaw Jewish Community Center joins with JewishAkron in dedication to the mission of “Creating a Community for All.”

“At his last board meeting as JCC President, Stan expressed his personal thoughts and feelings. He was proud of his contributions but recognized that there are always more things to be done. In closing he shared the following “I can best sum up my feelings by a comment made to me by a friend of my mother’s when she visited me when we were sitting Shiva for her - and I told this lady that my mother had a tough life - that she didn’t have much pleasure. This lady replied, ‘Your Mother had everything. Her son was President of the Akron Jewish Center.’ Thank you for allowing Stan Bober to be President of the Center. I hope I haven’t let you down.”

Fifty years ago I married into the Akron Jewish Center community. For the last 5 decades the JCC has been our home away from home. We raised our children here; we made lifelong friends here; worked out here and for 50 years we have spent countless hours, days, and weeks volunteering here.

So recently when I was asked to work at the Shaw JCC, I said yes and was grateful to have the opportunity to repay the JCC a debt of thanks for always being here for me and my family. I choose the year 2016, not because it was the year I began my Presidency, but because it was the year when the Jewish Center community came to our rescue and collectively provided me and my family with the love and support we needed to make it possible to go on.

Therefore it is with heartfelt gratitude that I congratulate the Shaw Jewish Community Center on this significant milestone in their Akron history.

Best wishes for another 50 years
