Minding What Matters Most “So, Mike, now you’re the only one left. Don’t mess up anything.” Those were the “words of encouragement” my friend Jeff offered to me as he and I – and about a dozen other people – rode a trolley through Johnstown, Pa. as part of our friends Dustin and Holly’s wedding last year. I was Dustin’s best man, and by this point on that sunny spring day, we were stopping at various locales for photo ops between the ceremony and reception. The rather elaborate ceremony went off without a hitch, and to Jeff’s point, the last remaining “spotlight moments” were my and the maid of honor’s speeches. Jeff likes to get in other people’s heads with playful trash talk. He’s a master of it on the golf course, and earlier that day, he even tried to psych out Dustin, who stumbled over remembering his vows during the rehearsal. I assured Jeff his mind games wouldn’t work on me. Truth be told, though, my cool exterior betrayed the mild anxiety I felt inside. As any true journalist would, I waited to compose my speech until the deadline approached, and some best man responsibilities I hadn’t planned for cut into my speechwriting time that morning. On top of that, the challenge of compressing a 23-year friendship into about a

five-minute speech – and getting it just right – felt formidable. Such can also be the case with wedding planning. The enormity of the task at hand can start to feel overwhelming, leading you to psych yourself out with second-guessing; the desire to get every detail just right – in such a way that’s symbolic of your newly formed union – can lead to a great deal of stress; and lastminute surprises can throw a wrench into your best-laid plans. Which is why in this issue of Jstyle Weddings, we provide dozens of helpful hints and expert insight from local professionals with years of experience. We also include plenty of stories that can serve as inspiration to couples still ironing out details of their big day. In the end, I didn’t deliver my speech exactly as it was written, but I hit the most important points – and in the process overcame Jeff’s attempts to sabotage my speech. My words led to heartfelt thanks from Dustin and Holly (and their families), and ultimately, that my speech in some way positively contributed to a day full of memories for my friends is what mattered most. Likewise, while you’ll almost certainly face some degree of adversity during wedding planning, I encourage you to stand strong and keep your eye on the prize: You’re marrying someone you love, someone with whom you will spend the rest of your life. That’s what matters most.

BY THE NUMBERS | NEED TO KNOW Jstyle Weddings asked Northeast Ohio brides and grooms to tell us about their weddings:

What was your “Bridezilla” moment? “Many dealings with my mother.” “When the band took out an accordion instead of playing the piano. I flipped out.” “I yelled at my mom about the flower girl basket! Something about the color of the ribbon, I think. But it wasn’t about the ribbon, it was about my teenage (high school) brother deciding to marry a few months before me! Seriously! We could have been the first ‘reality TV’ show.” “During the Friday night services aufruf, someone pelted a Sunkist fruit gem at my future husband but missed and hit me in the eye.” “When my husband came home drunk from his bachelor party at 4 a.m. (after promising he wouldn’t). We had the rehearsal first thing in the morning (a few hours later) and I was still trying to decide whether I should go through with it at that point. I was so angry.”

What part of your wedding was most memorable? “The speeches at the reception. Wish I had a tape of my father and father-in-law, not just pictures.”

“The rushing of the chupah immediately after the glass breaking. I wasn’t prepared for the mad stampede! In hindsight, it was awesome.”

“After the wedding when my friends and my husband’s friends spontaneously started playing duets on the piano in the lobby of our reception place and singing songs together.”

“The last dance of the night. Everyone circled around us. It was so special.”

“The rabbi yelling at the photographer for taking a picture during the ceremony. (It’s the best photo I have of the wedding).”

“When I circled the groom in front of the chupah. That was my most emotional moment.” “Celebrating with family and friends. Feeling and looking gorgeous. The groom looked so handsome.”

“Making it more special and unique. More creative. We just did your basic Jewish wedding.” “Acknowledging those who helped me stay on track.” “Having ceremony and reception in same place would have been best for guests.”

“Timing! Our wedding planner was terrible at keeping a schedule, so we missed our entire cocktail hour after we promised our photos would only take a few minutes. Ha!” “The venue details and the room setup. Also wish I had kept track of all of my important documents. My speech to my husband, along with his handkerchief and a few other items, were placed in a bag and were accidentally thrown out by the venue. I can’t get those items back.” “The food.”

Jstyle Weddings 2015

“My parents were in the New York Times for when my mom pushed the wedding cake into my dad’s face, and he hers, and then my mom’s uncle cleaned her face. I did the same – and my great uncle cleaned my face.”

What do you wish you’d paid more attention to?

“Arguments with my mother about the food (I wanted dairy but she hired a caterer committed to meat for that day), the music and the photographer (she hired sometime with an annoying reputation).”

12

“Knowing I will be spending rest of my life with the one I love.”

“Not inviting everyone and anyone, and making it smaller.” “Nothing, it was perfect!” “The photographer! He was horrible. Had horrible pictures! Big mistake.” “I wish I had paid more attention to the little things during the day, (and) appreciating all the people who came to celebrate with us.” “The flowers. I should have given exact pictures to the florist of what I wanted. None of the flowers, except my bouquet, turned out the way I wanted them to.” “The vows. They were in Hebrew so I’m not quite sure what I agreed to.”

Advice for planning and enjoying your big day By Michael C. Butz

G

inny Sukenik of GS Special Events in Mayfield Heights has been planning weddings for about 25 years, so she knows a thing or two about what works and what doesn’t. Weddings are joyous celebrations but can understandably be stressful to plan. Sukenik offers advice to couples in the process of planning: • Make a wedding list to serve as the basis for the entire wedding – including the budget. • Thoroughly research vendors to avoid potential disappointment that can arise when vendor choices are based solely on friends’ weddings. • Consider hiring a wedding planner. “Having a wedding planner takes the stress away,” she says. “A wedding planner doesn’t have to take over the wedding, they only have to handle what the bride and groom want them to. A day-of-wedding planner can make sure everything runs smoothly as planned so that the couple and their families can have fun.” A detail Sukenik says couples often overlook is videography. “Some couples don’t think they want video, and then they’re sorry afterward because they don’t remember everything from their wedding,” she says.

Jstyle Weddings readers wrote to share what details they overlooked and what advice they wish had been shared with them:

“Wish I had a wedding planner. During the reception the banquet manager came to me about everything! Even to point out who gets the kosher meals.”

14

Jstyle Weddings 2015

“Put favors at each place setting and not on a table. People took more than they were supposed to and some did not get any.” “Don’t wait until the last minute to do things that you think are small details. They end up being what stresses you out the most.”

“During the reception, take some time to sit down together and look around and TAKE IT ALL IN.” “Make sure your band knows how to play your song.”

“Slow down and try to remember every moment. It is over in the

blink of an eye.”

“When the bride’s mother says, ‘Don’t throw wedding cake in her daughter’s face’ when cutting the cake, choose to not listen to her!”

“Our mantra during our planning when things got stressful was, ‘We are getting married, THE REST DOESN’T MATTER!’” jstylemagazine.com

Evocative of a ballerina, romantic tulle skirts are back in a big way. The light fabric allows princess-worthy volume without adding weight so you can dance the night away. Tulle skirts give an ethereal feel while flattering and accentuating the waist.

Plunging Necklines

This sultry, red carpet style is great for brides who want to show a little skin on their wedding day. Plunging necklines are a great way to highlight your dĂŠcolletage and draw attention away from your lower half. If you love the look but feel too exposed, look for gowns with a sheer fabric or lace down the middle.

Colored Gowns While colored gowns have been popular for a while, brides are going bolder and brighter, veering away from traditional white or ivory. Vanilla, blush and golds will all leave you glowing. Want a mix of classic and contemporary? Try a traditional top with a colored skirt.

Dramatic Backs Dramatic backs are brides’ new favorite accessory replacement. Brides are choosing to replace long veils or trains with spectacular backs. Wedding guests may be waiting until the bride reaches the front of the aisle for the big WOW moment. Whether bare or framed in beading or jewels, dramatic backs are here to stay.

ROCK

SOLID Jamie and David Lamb prepare for marriage’s peaks and valleys by climbing a mountain to tie the knot

By Carlo Wolff

T

o hear Jamie and David Lamb evoke their wedding is to hear happiness. To watch the YouTube video of the event and see their wedding pictures is to be dazzled. Call their wedding an “adventure wedding.” Call it an “extreme wedding.” Call it fantastic. Jamie and David exchanged vows – and rings – last July 22, about 100 feet shy of the peak of The Chief, aka the Squamish Chief. It’s a granite monolith some 2,300 feet high next to the town of Stawamus in British Columbia. The day was overcast but dry. It was very long. The two say it was wonderful. “It was harder than we thought,” Jamie says of the climb she and David made, tethered to each other over more than nine hours. She rhapsodizes about the scenery. “It’s

46

Jstyle Weddings 2015

also just beautiful. It overlooks water that is half ocean and half glacial melt, so it’s an incredible color. It’s stunning.” Jamie is 29, David 33. Jamie grew up in Pepper Pike and graduated from Hawken School in Gates Mills. Until she left the area for Colorado in 2003, she attended Anshe Chesed Fairmount Temple in Beachwood three days a week. Jamie, the more experienced climber of the pair, is the daughter of Scott and Leslie Alperin of Mayfield Heights, and David, a professional athlete who now works for Edward Jones, is the son of Larry and Becky Lamb of Steamboat Springs, Colo. Getting to their wedding perfectly symbolized the marriage itself. It also augured well for their life together.

“It was the best day ever,” Jamie recalls from Steamboat Springs, where she’s a dietitian and Realtor and David is a financial consultant. “It was just perfect.” Jamie got the idea from “some friends who created a company based around adventure weddings and they made a fake video of people getting married rock climbing and the video made me cry, I loved it so much. “Some girls grow up imagining themselves in a white dress, with a big extravagant wedding, and I’ve always been a little bit

different. I never wanted that. Never. I knew in my heart that this is the essence of life. We are active, we like to play, we like challenges, and I knew that this would be the most perfect way for us to celebrate our vows. We don’t need a whole audience of people. It’s just about us.” Jamie wore a makeshift wedding dress, David a makeshift tuxedo. He left the yarmulke Jamie’s cousins made for him behind (he wore it at the more formal recreation of the event the following day at nearby Shannon Falls).

Some girls grow up imagining themselves in a white dress, with a big extravagant wedding, and I’ve always been a little bit different. I never wanted that. Never. I knew in my heart that this is the essence of life. We are active, we like to play, we like challenges, and I knew that this would be the most perfect way for us to celebrate our vows. We don’t need a whole audience of people. It’s just about us.” The couple documented the whole process, climbing The Chief with four guides, a videographer, a still photographer, and Pep Fujas, an old skiing buddy of David’s. It was the officiant Pep who smashed the glass at the top; he had shoes on, while the couple was barefoot.

jstylemagazine.com

The ascent itself was challenging. So was getting everyone on board. There was never any doubt in Jamie’s mind, however; she always envisioned the climb as the perfect representation of her relationship with David. But there was resistance from both families, and

David, less experienced in mountaineering, had to be brought along. Initially, when Jamie proposed the mountaintop wedding, David balked, saying he preferred a traditional nuptial. But Jamie stood firm, and eventually, everyone went along. While

the parents stayed at the foot of the mountain, capturing the action on cameras with telephoto lenses, the joyous atmosphere was all around. “I think the most beautiful thing was that despite opposition from many interested parties, it was done the way we wanted

it,” says David. “It was for us and about us and about the love of people and it wasn’t about the show, about the glitz and the glamour and the friends. It was about us tying the knot, saying ‘I do’ to one another without the headache and distractions of all the little things that come with a wedding. “Leading up to it, the beauty was that we had to do a sport in which we were outside, active, communicating – and bigger than anything, trusting one another every time we went to climb. When you climb, you have to have full faith in

50 Jstyle Weddings 2015

your partner, so what better theme to abide by leading up to a marriage than to do something like that?” “Had we done it without guides we would have barely seen each other, because I would have climbed a pitch (a length between two points of rope), he would have climbed a pitch, and we wouldn’t really have been together,” says Jamie. “But this way we got to be together all day, just the two of us.” “It was incredible,” says David, a University of Denver national champion skier whose competitive career ended with concussions as a

member of the U.S. Ski Cross Team. “Just accomplishing the climb itself is a big deal; it’s one of the most iconic climbs in the world. Just to go there and do something that was a little bit outside of our wheelhouse was a treat. To top that with saying ‘I do’ 2,000 feet above the ocean was a real treat, the jewel that really capped it all off. “When you expand your boundaries and live on the outer peripheries of what you’re capable of, you bring to fruition the greatest highs that a person could ever experience but you have to accept the fact that you

pay to play and you will very much experience the other end of that spectrum as well,” he adds. “As a result, I will never shy away from something like what we did with our wedding. This was Jamie’s idea, and like I said, I’d never done anything like that, so the idea of doing something like this seemed intimidating, but I was fully willing to tackle it and take it head-on. I wish I could verbalize the emotions at the top of that; just doing that was sensational, and getting to marry my best friend and having that celebration was magical.” jsw

Have a Good Hair Day By Jacqueline Mitchell

Vintage, Hollywood-inspired ’dos defining wedding day hairstyles

ooking for some wedding day hair inspiration? Janine Lydic, hairdresser at Dino Palmieri Salon and Spa in Beachwood, says her clients are bringing in images from Pinterest and classic movies for their wedding day ’dos rather than drawing from current celebrities’ looks. “You’ll see it in their faces when something clicks for them,” says Lydic of the brides she styles. She shares some of this year’s most popular trends in bridal hairstyles: Timeless, classic updos with attention to form and detail are replacing the looser, more relaxed hairstyles of 2014. Think old school, Hollywood glamour. “We’re doing a lot of full updos with details of curls, twists and braids,” says Lydic. Brides are asking for hairstyles that are interesting from every angle. Low-formed buns are also popular. For brides who want to wear their hair down, Lydic suggests going for a soft look with a single wave in the hair or side-swept locks pinned off to one side. As for accessories, birdcage veils channel classic movie stars from the 1920s and ’40s. Placing flowers – especially daisies and miniature roses – in updos or intertwining them into the hair adds a romantic detail to any hairstyle. jsw

Makeup

Must-haves By Jacqueline Mitchell

There are certain beauty must-haves a bride should not be without on her wedding day. Makeup artist Kelly Miron, owner of The Powder Room in Woodmere, shares five essential products to make any wedding day makeup look complete.

Skin u

“It’s always about really good skin,” says Miron. Natura Bisse Essential Shock Intense Cream revitalizes nearly every skin type by deeply hydrating without making skin greasy.

pPrimer

Another secret to having flawless skin is eye and face primer. Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer calms redness and creates a long-wearing base for foundation. Blinc Eye Shadow Primer provides a longwearing, crease-proof base that makes eye shadow pop.

tPowder A pressed powder such as Diego Dalla Palma Compact Powder is a quick solution for absorbing excess oil and aiding in any minor touchups throughout the day.

Lips u

Whether a bride chooses lipstick, liner or gloss, always keep a lip product handy for touchups.

tSet it

A setting spray ensures that makeup doesn’t move during emotional moments. Model in a Bottle is tearproof, humidityproof and perspirationproof. “We call it shellac,” Miron says.

Exercise and nutrition can help brides look and feel their best on their wedding day By Kristen Mott

E

very bride wants to look her best on her wedding day. Whether one wants to shed some pounds before the big day or just tone up, the time to start an exercise regimen is now, says Shari Barnes, a personal trainer at the Mandel Jewish Community Center in Beachwood. “The sooner you start exercising, the better. Start an exercise program today,” Barnes says. For brides who want to tone their muscles and improve their overall physique, Barnes suggests signing up for a weightlifting class or a TRX suspension training class. TRX is a total body workout that helps develop core stability, strength, flexibility and balance. Both of these classes will help strengthen muscles and improve appearance. Those wishing to lose some weight before their wedding day should consider high-intensity interval training. “Interval training confuses your muscles,” Barnes says. “If you’re doing weightlifting and then switch to cardio, it confuses your body into burning more calories.” Besides burning calories, interval training also strengthens the heart, improves endurance and speeds up metabolism. Interval training classes are available at most gyms or can be done within the comfort of one’s home. Exercising is only one piece of the puzzle. For an effective workout regimen, a balanced diet is key. Barnes recommends consuming a diet filled with protein, vegetables and low-fat foods, which will maintain health and strength. Eating fiber-rich foods and complex carbohydrates, especially after a workout, will help regulate blood sugar and refuel muscles. By starting an exercise program early on and eating a healthy diet, a bride will look – and feel – beautiful and confident on her wedding day. jsw

Take the Cake By Kristen Mott

A wedding cake is often the focal point of a reception. Not only is the cake a beautiful piece of art, it reflects the newlyweds’ shared taste and style. While some couples prefer classic and elegant wedding cakes, others are pushing the boundaries by utilizing rustic elements, metallic colors and even technology to make a statement with their cake.

68

Jstyle Weddings 2015

Rustic

Projected images

For couples who wish to have a simple cake, a rustic style can be the perfect solution. To achieve the rustic look, a tiered cake is decorated with white, swirled buttercream frosting. For an even more natural approach, John Taylor, executive chef at Executive Caterers at Landerhaven, suggests a tiered unfrosted cake with a bright, fruity filling that shines through the exposed layers. To complete the look, rustic cakes can be decorated with burlap ribbon, fruit or confectioner’s sugar.

Projection mapping is the latest trend in high-tech wedding cakes. Projection technology is used to cast images, words or designs of any color onto a tiered wedding cake that has been covered in plain white fondant. Taylor has worked with companies such as Rock the House to make these cakes come to life. “The bride and groom go up front to cut the cake and there’s this whole audiovisual presentation that’s projected onto the cake of the bride and

accented with modern elements like bursts of color or a mix of metallic colors.

Modern elegant Modern elegant wedding cakes have become very popular, says Ginny Sukenik, owner of GS Special Events. These cakes are decorated with traditional elements, such as rosettes, lace or simple piping designs, then

patterns are then painted onto the layers of cake. The finished cakes can then be accented with fresh flowers or ribbon.

Hand-painted Hand-painted cakes are a new alternative to traditional piping designs, Sukenik says. The cakes are first covered in either white or colored fondant. Using diluted food coloring, flowers, words or

Stencils For a subtle yet elegant cake design, Taylor recommends utilizing stencils. To achieve this look, stencils are placed on top of a cake that is covered in white fondant.

Royal icing a shade or two darker than the fondant is then thinly spread on top of the stencils. The stencil is then pulled off the cake, leaving behind a beautiful design. “This technique creates the illusion of lace and it can also be used to create patterns such as damask or paisley,” Taylor says. jsw

Creative Cuisine

Reception meals are increasingly imaginative, nutritious and locally sourced By Kristen Mott

Amanda Lu / Executive Caterers at Landerhaven

W

edding reception menus have come a long way from the traditional meat, chicken or seafood entrée options. Couples are now searching for healthy, locally grown and vegetarian options to serve to their guests. “The current trend isn’t toward a particular item, it’s toward healthy and local options and going the vegetarian or vegan route. More and more of those types of foods are being offered on reception menus,” says John Taylor, the executive chef at Executive Caterers at Landerhaven. Health-conscious and vegan options are becoming increasingly popular for appetizers, Taylor says. For a healthy twist on an appetizer, Taylor suggests serving a blackened tofu lollipop with an avocado lime sauce drizzled on top. Glutenfree options are growing in popularity too, especially for guests who may have certain dietary restrictions. Couples also are requesting that unique ingredients be incorporated into the menu, Taylor says, such as quinoa, beans, flavored hummus, couscous and different varieties of rice. Rather than just serving duck as an entrée, Taylor suggests pairing pan-seared duck breast with ingredients like Israeli couscous and bok choy to make the dish more interesting. “People aren’t just looking for healthy or vegetarian From top : Blackened tofu lollipop with avocado lime sauce; pan-seared duck breast with raspberry cola gastrique, tri-color Israeli couscous and baby bok choy; and ruby grapefruit squares topped with chevre cheese, peach and pecan relish on cucumber coulis.

options, they’re looking for things that are cutting edge yet still nutritional,” he says. Rather than a catered dinner, some couples prefer to have different food stations set up at the reception, such as a meat carving station or a pasta station. Taylor says food stations work perfectly with a destination wedding, as each can feature foods from different areas of that state or country. For dessert, Taylor suggests providing guests with something sweet in addition to the wedding cake. A coffee station can be set up later in the evening with accompanying macaron towers, or a table can display different flavors of popcorn. Taylor also recommends placing pre-wrapped sugar cookies that have been decorated with the couple’s names or initials at each place setting. “People can then eat the cookies at the end of the evening or they can also be used as part of the favor. Guests can take them home and remember the evening,” he says. jsw

Perfect Pairs

Not only do the bride and groom make a great couple – so can their signature drinks By Carlo Wolff Joseph DeLuca

J

oseph DeLuca, a beverage consultant and founder of the United States Bartenders Guild in Cleveland, is a well-known mixologist who also goes by the name of “Dr. Drink.” His buzzword for pairing drinks at weddings: “bespoke.” “I usually do about two or three weddings a year, and I try not to work on weekends,” he says. “Where I have a lot of success is in ‘bespoke cocktails’ for the wedding.” To DeLuca, one example of “bespoke” uses the Moscow Mule as a platform. Where the traditional version of the Mule, a cocktail created in 1938, calls for vodka, ginger beer and lime juice, DeLuca tailors it to gender. “For the gentlemen, a take on a Moscow Mule would be a vanilla-infused bourbon with muddled orange and ginger beer, and for the lady, we would do a rum with coconut milk, muddled wine and ginger beer,” he suggests. “Another one that we’ve set up for wedding receptions was what we could call almost a ‘guest whim.’ The gentlemen would be drinking Old Fashioneds, and we would offer three different

72

Jstyle Weddings 2015

types of sweeteners and three different types of bitters. For the ladies, we’d do a riff on the French 75, using different flavored vodkas in place of gin. So it gives the guest a little more wiggle room on their flavor profile on those two.” For traditionalists, an Old Fashioned – versions date to the Civil War – consists of bourbon, Angostura bitters, sugar, a maraschino cherry and an orange wedge. A French 75 – the drink is celebrating its centennial – is made of gin, Champagne, lemon juice and sugar. There’s another market to consider, according to DeLuca. “Finally, there are dry weddings where people do not want to drink alcohol,” he says. “For the gentlemen, we’d do something like a berry shrub. A shrub is an interesting cocktail from colonial America. You use

From top: Customized Moscow Mules; an Old Fashioned for him and French 75 for her; and a nonalcoholic orange cream fizz for her and berry shrub for him.

vinegar to give it brightness, fresh-crushed seasonal berries as sweetener to balance out the vinegar, and then fill with soda water. It’s a very healthy alternative to soda pop. And for the ladies, we’d do something like an orange cream fizz using fresh-squeezed orange juice, heavy cream, egg white and soda water, with a little bit of vanilla syrup.” “I always tell bartenders, bar owners and managers that half of America doesn’t use alcohol, and you’re

missing the boat if you’re not serving a well-made, crafted, nonalcoholic drink. There are people who really don’t want that part of their day of celebration.” In the cocktails he builds, DeLuca wants to stress the “beverage” in “beverage professional.” Beverages, after all, should go down easy. jsw

Marsala

True Colors

This gorgeous deep wine color – Pantone Color of the Year 2015 – will flatter any skin tone as a bridesmaids dress, will give centerpieces a timeless feel and leave your guests gasping at a custom invitation. For just a hint of Marsala, don a deep lip color in the shade for a romantic touch.

“Marsala is warm and inviting, and reflective of the Sicilian landscape which reveals wonderful coordinating and contrasting colors providing a wealth of inspiration. Noted mélanges include the tones of bougainvillea, blood oranges, rich volcanic landscapes and the patina acquired by sunlit color on the travertine building accents. I welcome this surprisingly versatile color choice and the rich palette it brings to the floral and lighting designs of a special event.” – Pieter Bouterse, owner of Pieter Bouterse Studio

orget basic blush and champagne tones. “Vibrant” is the latest trend for wedding bouquets, says Heather Thomas, owner and creative director of HeatherLily in Cleveland.

Flower Power

Vibrancy, texture and fieldto-table designs are among emerging floral arrangement and bouquet trends in 2015 By Jacqueline Mitchell

86

Jstyle Weddings 2015

Blush gets an update with the incorporation of peach, coral and soft orange to create a warmer, more saturated palette. Or, create a more dramatic palette by mixing blush with the moodier, richer colors of merlot, raspberry, gray and other earthy tones. Accent bouquets with a trail created by layers of luxurious ribbons. The French style of using only one or two types of flowers has become passé. The trend has shifted to embrace variety and texture. It’s a “perfectly imperfect” style, Thomas says, like a Flemish floral still life – lavish, full and unique. Natural components such as branches, vines and foliage create a luxurious, flourishing, ethereal look. The trend is to bring the outdoors in, whether you’re at the Ritz-Carlton, Cleveland or Severance Hall, with decorations such as urns, arches and chupahs full of woodland-inspired foliage. The Cleveland market is embracing the “field to table” or “seed to centerpiece” concept, progressing toward a more eco-consciousness style with emphasis on natural, artistic botanical materials and a high demand for nature in all its glory, she adds. Wearable flowers and delicate floral headpieces also are emerging as a trend. Miniature succulents, orchids, seeded eucalyptus or brunia serve as wonderful botanicals to incorporate into floral accessory pieces such as hair combs, headbands and clips, Thomas says. jsw

Returning the Favor W

By Kristen Mott

edding favors are an excellent way to make guests feel welcome and appreciated. Rather than going a traditional route, try to incorporate personal or creative touches into the favors. The favors should not only be a parting gift for guests but should serve as a reminder of the wedding for years to come.

Hunter Photographic / Kirkbride Wedding Planning and Design

Welcome bags Wine bottles For a truly customized favor, Valarie Kirkbride of Kirkbride Wedding Planning and Design suggests creating your own wine. Kirkbride has worked with couples that found a company to help them design their own blend of wine. The wine is then bottled and labeled with the name of the couple and the wedding date, and guests can take their own bottles of wine home. Those looking for a more affordable option can use engraved wine stoppers or bottle stoppers in the shape of a heart as favors instead.

All City Candy

Candy buffets

A candy buffet is a great way to incorporate a fun, bright element into a wedding reception. Fill jars and vases of different sizes with candy or chocolate that matches the wedding’s colors. Guests can then fill up small decorative containers with their favorites to take home. Elisabeth Sapell, owner of All City Candy, recommends incorporating favorite candy of those in the wedding party for a more personalized feel. “Candy brings back a lot of memories,” Sapell says. “By including candy that’s associated with someone in the wedding party or the family, they get to share that memory with the guests. It’s a great way to include retro or old-fashioned candy in the buffet as well.”

88

Jstyle Weddings 2015

These bags are ideal for relatives or friends who are traveling to attend the wedding. Fill decorative bags with instant coffee, tea pouches, snacks, a newspaper or magazine, and a small bottle of ibuprofen. The bags will make guests feel appreciated and can be used the morning after the wedding as well. To make a welcome bag more personal, Kirkbride suggests including a short note from the couple inside it.

Sunglasses Novelty sunglasses come in all shapes and colors and can be personalized with the couple’s initials or the date of the wedding on the temples of Imagen Photography / Kirkbride the glasses. The sunglasses can be left at each place setting for guests to wear throughout the evening. “Sunglasses are really something fun for guests to put on when they are dancing later on in the evening and it’s fun for the pictures too,” Kirkbride says.

Photo booths There are a handful of options when it comes to incorporating a photo booth into a wedding reception. From the traditional standalone booth to roaming photographers, photo favors are a perfect way for guests to remember the fun night. Kirkbride says she has worked with couples who have even set up a red carpet at their reception or designed a monogrammed step-and-repeat banner. “Photo booths are really fun because it’s something for people to do during the reception and they get to take their pictures home,” she says. jsw

wedding invitation sets the tone for the big day, gives guests a sneak peek at the décor and attire, and expresses a couple’s personality. So what’s the secret to a perfect wedding invitation? No matter which trend or style couples decide on, follow this mantra: Keep it simple. “Information is the key to a good wedding invitation,” says Amanda Cursaro, founder and designer at Baci Designer in Cuyahoga Falls. Invitations that are clear and easy to read make

the biggest impact, says Amy Wain Garnitz, owner of The A.L. Wain Company in Shaker Heights. The designers shared some of the most popular stationery trends this year: Classic: Fun, classic patterns such as stripes and polka dots become trendy when printed in gold, black or blush – three of the most popular shades this year. Traditional colors of black and white take on a new twist by accenting dark paper with light ink. Monograms are also popular this year.

Metallic: Add a metallic pop of color with the use of gold or silver foil, or go girly glam with glitter-lined envelopes and belly bands. Vintage-inspired: Romantic, vintage-inspired details such as lace patterns, rings of flowers and vintage fonts give stationery an old-time charm. A vintage look can also be achieved by using the old printing style of a letterpress, a hand press that delivers an artistic touch. Rustic: Both Wain Garnitz and Cursaro say rustic

elegance ranks high on the most-requested list. Custom: A couple’s personality truly shines through by collaborating on custom stationery. “I love it when couples showcase something that is special to them in their daily lives,” said Cursaro, who recently designed an invitation with a bicycle built for two because the couple loved cycling and met at an Ironman competition. “It’s little touches like this that make an invitation truly special.” jsw

Building a Nest By Kristen Mott

A new home provides a blank canvas for newlyweds to design and decorate. Although it can be tricky to meld different design tastes, decorating a new home gives couples the chance to develop their own style. Furniture in rich wood tones, of metal or leather creates a neutral backdrop, while pillows and dĂŠcor accents with patterns or modern features can give each room its own personality.

Jet Set

By Jacqueline Mitchell

W

hether you want to swim among the dolphins in the Caribbean, explore the Old City of Jerusalem or plan a romantic European adventure, there’s a honeymoon destination to suit every couple. Diana Maiola-Cirino, president and owner of Rocky River-based Italian Tours and Travel by Diana, and Joseph Jacobowitz, director of operations at Kesher Tours in New York, describe some romantic, interesting and fun honeymoon destinations:

Israel Explore the Old City and immerse yourself in history and culture. Go shopping in the souk market, visit the Temple Mount and stop to say a prayer at the Wailing Wall. Examine the natural beauty of Sorek Stalactite Cave Nature Reserve in the Judean Mountains. Visit The Israel Museum, Islamic Museum and Yad Vashem, Israel’s Holocaust museum. “Wherever you’re walking, you’re stepping in Jewish history,” Jacobowitz says.

Paris Take in the beautiful architecture at every turn. Stop at quaint shops such as handmade perfume stores and taste French bread and cheese paired with wine at cafes. Eat dinner on the Seine River, gaze at the Eiffel tower or admire the gardens in Northern France’s Giverny where impressionist Claude Monet was inspired to paint his masterpieces.

Hawaii Take in the warm weather and tropical scenery of the islands while bike riding. Explore the natural beauty of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park – one of the few places in the world where couples can get up close and personal with an active volcano. Take advantage of the ocean and go scuba diving, surfing or boating, or relax poolside or on one of the many beaches.

Tuscany Try your hand at cheese making at a Tuscan farm, or take a cooking lesson together and make an authentic Italian pizza. For wine tasting, visit the rolling hillsides of the Chianti region and stay for a romantic candlelit dinner in a medieval castle. Explore Orvieto’s ancient, extensive labyrinth of caves and tunnels beneath the surface of the city. Couples can dine in a cave and rub elbows with the locals.

Venice Navigate Venice’s mysterious alleyways and iconic canals. Ride a gondola through the canals while being serenaded by a gondolier, then dine outside by the water and take in the picturesque view. Cross the canals and explore the less-touristy area of Dorsoduro, where the Venetians live. Here, couples can roam the quiet streets to visit taverns and antique markets and sample wine and appetizers at a Venetian bacaro (many of which are more than 200 years old).

Jamaica For a secluded and relaxing honeymoon, go to the Caribbean, where couples can scuba dive, snorkel and go sail boating in the turquoise waters surrounding the island. Hike the tropical forests, home to wildlife and natural waterfalls.

Spain Tour Barcelona, making certain to stop by the Jewish Quarter, El Call, and take in the Spanish architecture, promenades and maze-like alleyways. Basalo, a historically rich city that dates back to the Middle Ages, contains a mikvah built in 1264. In Granada, tour the vast grounds of the Alhambra palace and gardens, where couples can marvel at architecture and landscape.
