Someone you should know Etty Cusner | Realtor and disc jockey LISA MATKOWSKY

S

ometimes, the most interesting people live right next door. University Heights has been home to Etty Cusner, a Realtor and disc jockey for the last 10 years and she’s someone you should know. Cusner and her husband, Ashi, an organizational psychologist, live with their children, Mikey 15, Akiva 13, Eliana 9, Azi 5, and Rikki 2, all of whom attend Fuchs Mizrachi School in Beachwood. They came to Cleveland a little over a decade ago for educational purposes and have really enjoyed the community. “I love it here,” Cusner, who plans to move to the Poets’s Corner neighborhood in Shaker Heights, told Cleveland Kesher. “Both University Heights and Shaker are so wonderfully warm and charming,. There’s such a good quality of life here. Cleveland is such a great place to raise children. I love the beautiful (Cleveland) Metroparks, and everything is just a few minutes “drive away.” Cusner was born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., where she attended the Shulamith School through high school and then started her college career at Touro University. “When I moved from New York with my husband to Brookline, Mass, where we lived for six years, I completed my degree at the University of Massachusetts and taught at the New England Hebrew Academy,” she said. “When we then moved to Cleveland, I continued to work as a teacher at the Fuchs 4 | Cleveland Kesher

I enjoy helping people find their homes, where they can make tons of meaningful memories. I am a very handson Realtor and enjoy sitting with the clients

Community News CUSNER | 4 throughout the whole process – from start to closing. Each transaction is just a really amazing opportunity to change a client into a friend.” Helping people and building relationships in the community is a running theme for Cusner. In addition to her career as a Realtor, she is a disc jockey as well. Cusner and her partner, Smadar Chafetz, run a DJ business for bat mitzvahs, which is another of her passions given her lifelong love of music. “Music and dancing have always been a huge part of my life,” Cusner said. “My dad was a professional chazzan and composer. He taught me how to transform a moment through music, and that is something that I have been doing for as long as I can remember. My mom passed away from cancer when I was 11 years old and the one amazing memory that sticks with me to this day was her putting on the record player and us just dancing together in my living room. I believe that my parents were responsible for developing my love of music and dance. So, when I get on the dance floor at bat mitzvahs, I am taken back to those precious, cherished moments from my youth.” The idea of becoming a DJ was also inspired once the family moved to Cleveland. “Smadar and I decided to share in this adventure together,” she said. “We both had a deep enthusiasm for music, dancing and bringing simcha to people’s lives. In 2015, DJ Zuz was born. We are very unique to the Cleveland simcha scene in the sense that we don’t simply hype up the party with fresh music and watch the party happen. Rather, we join in the party and hype up the dance floor. We are constantly reimagining creative ideas to bring extra-Zuz-fun to events.” The Cusners attend several shuls, primarily Green Road Synagogue in Beachwood and Kehillat Heichel Kodesh in University Heights. She said she is glad she chose Cleveland and that if she wasn’t living here, she would be most likely living in Israel. “A lot of my siblings live there and my husband’s, too, so that would be nice,” she 6 | Cleveland Kesher

I hate to sound cheesy, but … It is an absolute privilege to be able to serve the community in both capacities. I hope that I can continue for many years to come.”

Fuchs Mizrachi participates in Rabbi Sacks Legacy program CLEVELAND KESHER

ntegrating the ideas of the late Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks into the current curriculum in Jewish schools across North America is what the Torah V’Chochmah program consists of. “We were looking for schools that were interested in doing this, interested in integrating Rabbi Sacks’ wonderful ideas into their curriculum, but also teachers who are interested in growing professionally,” Rabbi Jeremy Bruce, Torah V’Chochmah program director and executive director of the Rabbi Sacks Legacy North American operations, told Cleveland Kesher. The program helps participants incorporate the teachings of Sacks, who died in 2020, into their classrooms to help inspire the next generation of students to lead meaningfully Jewish lives, according to a news release. Fuchs Mizrachi School in Beachwood was one of 18 schools selected to participate in the Rabbi Sacks’ Legacy Torah V’Chochmah program and to attend the five-day program at Ma’ayanot Yeshiva High School for Girls from July 9 to July 13 in Teaneck, N.J. two teachers from the school were junior high teacher Aliza Joel and high school teacher Rabbi Rick Schindelheim. “It was just so energizing to be part of a cohort of like-minded, passionate, thoughtful educators who continuously want to grow both personally and professionally,” Aliza Joel told Cleveland Kesher. The two local teachers are being mentored by Rabbi Zvi Grumet, the Chumash mentor, and developing two curricula for the Book of

Three different sources are a part of this program, including Jewish philosophy, Chumash and parshat HaShavuah, Bruce said. Aliza Joel teaches Chumash to sixth, seventh and eighth graders, which gives them the skills to decipher, decode and understand Torah, and to have it be an inspiration for them to live a life of meaning and Jewish values, she said. “It’s exciting to have a fresh viewpoint after having taught for so many years, and just the ability to innovate and grow and improve my teaching practice is so invigorating,” she said. Aliza Joel hopes to build on her current curriculum with the values and ideas from Sacks onto her more traditional commentaries, she said. “The idea of this program, the Torah V’Chochmah program, is to be able to incorporate Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, his inspiration, and his Torah, his values, his

Through the themes, she will choose what the students will learn in both the original texts with more traditional commentaries, and with some essays, quotes or ideas from Sacks, she said. “I’m excited to be able to bring it onto the level of junior high students at a time where they’re really starting to think about things in a more personal way,” she said.

A Dose of Inspiration Pull over

By: Rabbi Menachem Tenenbaum

A

bout 14 years ago, I had the privilege to study in an elite yeshiva in Israel for the year. While I studied well, I also had some great opportunities to explore the amazing land. Late one Thursday night, my friends and I piled into a rental car and headed south to the Dead Sea. As we drove down Highway 90 along the coast, my friend driving the car did something seriously dangerous. I doubt he was observing the speed limit, maybe he didn’t realize it was in kilometers. Speeding down the highway, he turned to us and said, “Check this out. You know I could turn off the car and it will still drive.” Without giving us a chance to respond, he proved it to be true and turned off the car. Still speeding down the highway, he outdid his last foolish statement and said, “I could

even take the key out of the ignition, and it will still drive.” He promptly removed the key and continued speeding down the 90. “Oh no,” he exclaimed, “The steering wheel locked up, I can’t control the car.” Thankfully, it was a straight stretch of road, with no other cars around, and we were able to stop the car completely and avoid a terrible incident. Do you ever feel like that? Do you ever sense that there are areas of your life that are just running on their own and you need to get a grip? Are any areas of your life driving themselves and you would like to take better control? Elul and this season of the year are the designated pullover for us all. We are able to stop the car and recalibrate. There are so many opportunities this month to tap into our soul, to regain control of our lives. One of the greatest lessons I have learned about how to take control, I learned outside of an ice cream shop. A few years ago, a guest speaker for the teenagers of NCSY, shared such a simple way to be more in control of our decisions. “Keep a daily accounting of the areas of life you need to work on,” she said. “If you question yourself daily about certain practices, those areas of life become easier to deal with.” Her message made such an impression on me, and I have achieved various goals of personal improvement because of it. A daily accounting truly helps you stay focused on your goals. May we all maximize our Elul and High Holidays by pulling over, refocusing and learning how to journey forward.

Rabbi Menachem Tenenbaum of University Heights is the associate regional director of Central East NCSY (formerly known as the National Conference of Synagogue Youth). He recently authored his debut book “Three Steps Forward,” a book about Jewish prayer.

Spotlight on Marketing 5 top ways to declutter your website, engage more visitors Content provided by: Nachum “Nooch” Langsner n the digital age, where attention spans are shrinking and online competition is fierce, a cluttered website can quickly drive away visitors and potential customers. A well-organized and clutter-free website enhances the user experience and increases engagement and conversion rates. Let’s discuss the top five ways to declutter your website and create a more inviting space for visitors.

the content more digestible and appealing. White space helps focus attention on the essential elements, reducing visual noise and increasing comprehension. It gives your website a clean and modern look, enhancing the overall user experience. Less is often more in web design, and strategically incorporating white space will make your website feel more spacious and inviting to visitors.

I

USE IMAGES SPARINGLY

Images are essential for engaging visitors and conveying information visually, but too many photos can overwhelm your website. Be selective and intentional about the images you choose to include. Opt for high-quality photos that align with your brand and the message you want to convey. Avoid using stock photos excessively, as they can make your website feel generic and impersonal. Instead, incorporate custom images that showcase your products, services, or team members. Optimize image sizes for faster loading times, as slow-loading images can frustrate visitors and lead to higher bounce rates. You can create a more streamlined and clutter-free website using images sparingly and thoughtfully.

SIMPLIFY YOUR MENU

The navigation menu is the backbone of any website, guiding visitors to different sections and pages. A cluttered and complicated menu can confuse users, making finding what they’re looking for challenging. To declutter your website’s menu, focus on simplicity and hierarchy. Consider using clear and concise labels for your menu items. Keep it limited to the most critical sections, and if you have many pages, organize them into drop-down or collapsible menus. ALLOW WHITE SPACE

White or negative space is the empty area between elements on a web page. It may seem counterintuitive, but white space is crucial in website design and decluttering. By leaving ample white space around text, images, and buttons, you provide breathing room for visitors’ eyes, making

Spotlight on Marketing MARKETING | 16 USE VALUABLE CONTENT ONLY

While including a wealth of information on your website is tempting, irrelevant or redundant content can clutter the user experience. Focus on providing valuable, concise content that addresses your audience’s needs and pain points. Consider the following tips: • Remove outdated or redundant information that no longer serves a purpose. • Condense lengthy paragraphs into shorter, more digestible sections. • Use bullet points and subheadings to break up content and improve readability. • Incorporate multimedia elements, such as videos and infographics, to present information in a visually appealing manner. You can create a more engaging and userfriendly website by decluttering your content and ensuring it adds value to your visitors. DIAL BACK THE COLORS

Color is a powerful tool in web design,

18 | Cleveland Kesher

but an excessive color palette can be visually overwhelming. Stick to a cohesive color scheme that aligns with your brand and complements your website’s aesthetic. Limit the number of primary colors to create a harmonious and clutter-free visual experience. CONCLUSION

Decluttering your website is not just about aesthetics; it directly impacts user engagement and satisfaction. By simplifying your menu, incorporating white space, using images thoughtfully, providing valuable content, and dialing back the colors, you can create a more user-friendly and engaging website. Lastly, consult with an expert to assess and improve your website’s user experience.

Rav Rick Schindelheim and Morah Aliza Joel participated in The Rabbi Sacks Legacy Torah V’Chochmah program, a premier teacher training and curriculum project bringing the wisdom of Rabbi Sacks into schools. The program is designed for middle and high school educators, and brings together content experts, curriculum designers, and teachers, to build Judaic Studies curricula featuring significant ideas from Rabbi Sacks together with other traditional and modern Jewish thinkers.

This summer, campers enjoyed Machane Mizrachi. This year’s theme was tzvaim b’olam, colors in the world. Each week they explored a new color, investigated them through art, sensory activities, song and play.

Rabbi Avery Joel, head of school, participated as a mentor in a two-week leadership and community building training for the Day School Leadership Training Institute’s 13th cohort of day school leaders.
