Viewpoint Dear Reader,
As the Director of Rehabilitation at Lieberman Center, I am excited to introduce this issue of LIFE Magazine because it coincides with the grand opening of Lieberman’s remodeled and enlarged Rehabilitation and Fitness Center.
Our new space is beautiful, but most importantly, it allows the therapy team to recreate the real life activities that people need to perform every day, such as washing dishes, getting into bed or housekeeping. These essential actions or movements are called “Activities of Daily Living,” or ADLs for short. We have created a 400-sq. ft. mini-apartment that is fully-furnished with a bed and kitchen including cupboards and appliances so that patients can re-learn the skills they need to return home faster and with greater independence. Studies show that being prepared in this way helps to contribute to a patient’s recovery and reduces the risk of rehospitalization. Lieberman Center has a long history of providing the utmost in quality care for its patients which is why we also have 18 therapists trained and certified in Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy to help patients get back to their homes as quickly as possible. Remember that you do have a choice of where you want to do rehab after a hospital stay. Come take a tour of Lieberman’s new rehab facility and learn more about our excellent outcomes.
Besides introducing the Rehab and Fitness Center, we also want you to meet CJE’s new rabbi, Michelle Stern, to whom we all offer a warm welcome. We’re also pleased to profile former Board Chair and lifetime Board member Barbara Gilbert whose history with CJE spans decades. She is a walking encyclopedia of our organization’s enduring mission to improve the lives of the elderly. Finally, in a feature that has become a tradition every winter issue, our donors for Fiscal Year 2016 are included with a big “thank you” for all their contributions. If it were not for generous annual donations, grants, foundation and government funding and support from the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, we could not provide critical programs and services to the growing number of seniors who are turning to CJE for help. LIEBERMAN’S NEW REHAB AND FITNESS CENTER ACCELERATE YOUR RECOVERY FROM HOSPITAL TO HOME By Mary Keen

Lieberman Center for Health and Rehabilitation has raised its level of care with a newly-remodeled and expanded Rehab and Fitness Center. Designed in consultation with HealthPRO Rehabilitation®, it features anti-slip, noise-dampening cork rubber hybrid flooring and the latest in rehab equipment such as new parallel bars, steps, a mat table, and a variety of modality equipment used by therapists to accomplish the necessary treatments that reduce symptoms and maximize function.
Staff with expertise in physical, occupational and speech therapies is led by Sarah Wendel, who holds a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. According to Wendel, the biggest enhancement to the new rehab facility is the inclusion of a complete Activities of Daily Living (ADL) apartment which helps patients to practice the real activities that they need to accomplish at home. Since 75% of Lieberman rehab patients return to their homes, they have to be able to take care of themselves. Wendel uses the example of the five steps of food prep: Patients must get food out of the refrigerator, open it up, mix together the different ingredients, cook it and then serve it. Since food prep is such an important activity in one’s day, simply being able to put those five steps together really helps people return home faster and successfully, with more confidence.
and reconfigured for optimal space usage. A larger open expanse allows different disciplines to interact together in the therapy process, producing a highly-desirable collaborative care model. For example, there are some instances where staff can do co-treatments, as when a physical therapist works on someone’s balance at the same time that an occupational therapist works with them on their ability to brush their teeth and wash their face. With this open gym model Wendel can observe how different professionals are working with the patients and can see their cooperative interactions.
The ADL apartment provides all that is necessary for a person to be retrained: cupboards with dishes, drawers with utensils, appliances and more. Wendel points out that the apartment allows staff to perform good evidence-based therapy as patients practice their “activities of daily living.”

Lieberman Center employs 18 full-time professional and certified therapists at the Rehab and Fitness Center. Therapy is offered seven days a week in the following three disciplines:
1. Physical—Therapy that deals with overall mobility, including getting in and out of a chair, up and out of bed, increasing balance, building strength and walking. 2. Occupational—Task-oriented therapy that deals with taking care of oneself, one’s home and one’s hobbies or pastimes.
3. Speech—Therapy that works with a person’s ability to speak, process language and to eat, focusing on the muscles of the mouth and throat that need to be strengthened or coordinated.
The rehab center also provides training for the family of patients, such as showing them how to make car transfers. Therapists will also visit a patient’s home and provide home safety assessments where they make recommendations about furniture placement and check out other safety issues.

Lieberman Center’s rehab outcomes are outstanding even though our patient population is typically older and frailer than in other short-term rehab centers. Patients are often medically-complex, meaning that they have multiple medical problems that make the rehabilitation process more challenging.
Most important is that Lieberman’s care does not stop once someone is discharged. All rehab patients receive the services of the Lieberman +30 Program, whereby a Transitional Care Nurse monitors and follows patients for a month to ensure they are managing their medications and following other post-rehab instructions. This free feature of Lieberman Center was implemented to reduce re-hospitalizations, bringing Lieberman’s re-admissions rate below the national average.

A SALUTE TO LEADERSHIP: BARBARA GILBERT Way before the people of the United States nominated its first woman to run as a major party’s presidential candidate, CJE SeniorLife elected its first female Board Chair, Barbara A. Gilbert. Ms. Gilbert held this position from 1991-1993, almost the halfway mark in CJE’s 45-year history. Ms. Gilbert’s impact on CJE’s trajectory has been notable, and closely entwined, personally and professionally. In the early 1980s, she was immersed in a career as the Director of Beneficiary Education for Chicago’s Medicare office, helping people file for their benefits. In this role, she was familiar with CJE’s original walk-in center on Morse Avenue, where staff also provided free benefits counseling. It was bashert. As she gradually stepped back from her professional career to raise her growing family with her husband Howard, volunteering for CJE was a perfect fit: “I just knew I had to give back to the community and my heart naturally went out to the elderly.” By 1983, she was asked to join CJE’s Board of Directors and has held numerous leadership positions, mentoring dozens of new Board members and providing insightful counsel to staff.

During four decades of service to CJE, Barbara Gilbert has lived by these words and we are blessed by her actions. Her impeccable leadership and commitment to serving the elderly, infused with wisdom and grace, have had an immeasurable influence on CJE’s enduring history.
Since Ms. Gilbert is so closely identified with CJE, community members often call her first to get advice on how CJE can help their older loved ones. She is proud to recommend CJE’s myriad of services… from short-term rehab at Lieberman to counseling to Adult Day Services. But she is also realistic. To provide a continuum of care for a growing number of seniors, CJE needs more resources. She would like to see young people get involved in our organization’s work and is especially inspired by the growth of our Associate Board. Since Ms. Gilbert’s tenure as Board chair, two more women have been elected to this highest office: Mally Rutkoff and Judy Smith, CJE’s current chair. Both have incredible respect for her leadership and devotion to the Jewish and larger community. Characteristically modest, Barbara feels that her biggest contribution was to provide them guidance on how to run a good, tight meeting with action items and deliverables. “Get people in… get ’em out. Everyone has important work to do.”

SUSTAINING OUR FUTURE . . . STORIES OF LEGACY GIFTS By Allyson Marks Greenfield Several years ago, CJE SeniorLife was selected to participate in Create A Jewish Legacy, a JUF program designed to train organizations in the area of legacy giving to help ensure the sustainability of the Jewish community for years to come. After launching, we reached out to all our Board members (current and past) and asked them to mark their legacy by including CJE in their wills. The personal stories that accompanied members’ responses were inspiring. We’d like to share one of them. Marc Berman, a long time CJE Board member, lost both of his parents within a span of a decade. His parents, Ruth and Leo Berman, had a history with CJE, having lived at Gidwitz Place, something Marc wanted them to do from the moment he knew they needed to move to the Chicago area from their home in the Bronx. His parents’ stay at Gidwitz Place was a good one. They were happy, made a number of friends…even sat at the same table for all their meals. After Leo passed away at 92, Marc’s mom branched out—other residents joined her table for meals, and she kept herself busy with activities and attending services on Friday night and Saturday. Marc was thrilled by her transformation.
After Ruth passed at the age of 99, Marc knew that leaving two legacy gifts to CJE in the name of Ruth Berman and Leo Berman was the best way to honor them and all they did for him and the Jewish community. This would support the work of CJE, greatly helping its mission. “I want to make sure there are organizations like CJE around for years to come to take care of the seniors in our community,” said Berman. With his designation of a legacy gift, he has certainly done that.

CJE WELCOMES RABBI MICHELLE STERN By Nicole Bruce We are delighted to say shalom to Rabbi Stern who has recently joined the CJE family. Working primarily at Lieberman Center and Weinberg Community, she will lead Shabbat and holiday services, share her deep love of music by integrating it into prayer and programming, and facilitate dynamic Jewish learning sessions. In addition, she will provide spiritual guidance to residents, clients, family members and staff members during transitions that occur in a health care setting. A board-certified chaplain, she has worked in numerous hospitals, nursing homes, congregations and schools in New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Delaware and the US Virgin Islands. Rabbi Stern’s interest in eldercare and the intersection of spirituality and health grew during her rabbinical internships. For example, she provided care on a dementia unit and collaborated with hospice at the Abramson Center for Jewish Life, an assisted living residence and nursing home outside of Philadelphia. For the past five years, Rabbi Stern has been staff chaplain in the emergency and intensive care units at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, where she also trained as a mindfulness meditation facilitator.
“One of the things that I found very appealing about CJE is its commitment to its mission and values. Providing guidance and promoting holistic care through difficult late life transitions are very meaningful and important in my work. I’m very excited about returning to eldercare and long-term, residential care in order to fulfill this important rabbinic work,” said Rabbi Stern. Susan Buchbinder, Director of Religious Life, is thrilled that Rabbi Stern has joined the CJE team, “We are really looking forward to our new Rabbi sharing with older adults and their families meaningful and uplifting moments that motivate, inspire and invigorate their minds, bodies and souls.”
