THE TIMES ARE CHANGING-"Today is not yesterday. - We ourselves change. - How then, can our works and thoughts, if they are always to be the fittest continue always the same. - Change indeed, is painful, yet ever needful ; and if memory have its force and worth, so also has hope . . . "

"In this world of change naught w hi c h comes stays, and naught which goes is lost. "

ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY Recalling Julienne is similar to viewing a section of film from a motion picture. Our lives are but minor parts in the story; we have come to receive more than give. The major ro les are those of the faculty and adm inistration, 1 end in g substance to our years at Julienne.

Administration Keeps Pace With the Times Life at Julienne ha s seen numerous :.: han g e s in past years, because of the administration. Obviously it ha s been responsible fora "new look" inbotr atmosphere and spirit. The curriculum has expanded to include a greater variety of subjects and several at advanced levels; while a renewal project is particularly impressive in the c ha pel and the library. All this is expressive of the administration s de sire to keep pace with the times. I

CURRICULUM The face a fan at ion, a city, a school, is an ever-changing composite picture. The add i t i on of ne w courses, teachers, and students and the subtraction of the old, testify to this change at Julienne. By learning how to learn we become integral parts of our society.

..................-------------------Religion ReI i g ion permeates the life of the Julienne student beyond t hoe daily class. The religion department has k e p t pace with the times and changes resulting from Vatican Council II. Mas s e s have been c h a r act e r i s tic of the renewal spirit through widespread participation with songs 0 f the young generation. A day of recollection pro v e d to be a very successful experiment in substitloltion for a retreat.

Sister Mary Ann projects English in a new light.

"G irIs, you'll just have to believe m e ! "

English Mastery 0 f the English language involves two approaches: that of gramrrlar and cor r e c t usage, and that of literature . Grammar study provides the foundation and tools with which the language is developed into literature. Literature is more than this, howe ve r, it is the study of life. Through it we experience an author's emotion, a poet'sperceptiveness, and a people's spirit. Through t his comprehensive study, the student is t h us prepared to enter a world of tom 0 r row with a knowle dge , 1 0 v e, and appreciation of the English word. 17

Social Studies The social studies cur ric u 1 u m at Julienne 0 f fer s each student a voluminous background of ou r own American heritage, cultures foreign to ours, and problem.s confronting our expanding nation today. These subjects illustrate the problems various countries h a v e dealt with in t he course ot their development and the progress they have enjoyed as a result of their efforts . The world geography course offered is the key to a better understanding of the economic and social structure of all nations.

Languages It h a s been said that in mastering a

language one is actually acquiring a key to the heart of a foreign people . For it is ba s ically through the spoke n w 0 r d that m an is able to expre ss himse lf as an individual. Journalism and Speech Shelley once sa i d, "God gave man speech and created thought, which is the measure of the universe. " It is in Julienne's speech clas ses that students are taught how to polish the i r thoughts and transform them into constructive ideas through good speaking habits. Journalism utilizes the sam e basic principle, except that it deals with man's thought through des c rip t i v e writing. Journalism students a t Julienne get practical experience in reporting, writing' and working on the newspaper.

Working on the newspaper is serious work.

Sciences The W 0 rId of tomorrow will be the cre ation of today's scientists. Life science, chemistry, physics, and biology are the co u r s e s offered by Julie nne to equip the scientific minded student with the knowledge necessary to contribute to the complex world of the future.

Science can be a rather confusing subject.

The Many Faces of-Mediation between students and facu It Y is an imp 0 r tan t factor in every school. A student council fills this gap . The purpose of such an organization is to lay the foundation for and to help develop this relationship. Some of the activities sponsored this year included the t r a d i t ion a I Father Daughter Dance, the Easter Dance, the birthday calendar sale, the license plate d r i v e, sock-hops, and student-faculty entertainment.

A Glimpse at Sodality Sodality is not just an organization holds meetings once a week and then dismisses its members to go back into society unaffected; it is a way of life. Sodalists make a continuous effort to be aware of the spiritual and social needs in the school as well as in the community. Their goal is to remedy these needs insofar as they are able. w~ich

Les Parisiennes Spanish Club Language clubs are organized to develop in their members a greater interest, appreciation, and knowledge of the country, its people and their way of life. Ju 1i e nne has two language clubs: Les Parisiennes, and Spanish Club . Some of the activities the clubs engage in are discussions, skits, singing, films, and outside speakers . Special emphas i s is placed on the use of the language for the business portion of the meetings. This affords an oppor tunity for members to speak and hear the language more frequently and in a different context from that used in the classroom.

Spiritual Peace Corps Red Cross The newest organization at Julienne is the Spiritual Peace Corps. It differs from the other clubs in that it is nondiscriminating toward members thereby having the largest membership. There are no officers, no scheduled meetings and no dues. The purpose of the club is to further the spiritual development of its members. The high school chapters of the Red Cross give students an opportunity for practical education, leadership and service not only in the community but also in home s. Their goal is to learn how to cope with the problems in these areas and then put to use, through various types of social work, the knowledge they have gained. 76

National Honor Society The National Honor Society is an organization of girls dedicated to not only their own scholastic achievement bu t also to the betterment of the school through ext r a - curricular activities . CDL

Art Club The purpose of the youth division of the Citizens for Decent Literature is to create in students an awareness of the dangers and efforts of obscene literature. The club ke e p s its members informed and up to date , and encourages them to write letters of both compliment and criticism to city officials and busi nessmen in support of decency. The recently founded Art Club is an example of the increasing interest in the fine arts among the Julienne students. The club strives to further this interest by encouraging its members to attend art exhibits and films, and to use creative methods in their own works.

Future Nurses Club The Future Nurses Club at Julienne follows a program designed to meet the needs of any girl interested in a medical career. Tours t h r 0 ugh both local and distant h 0 s pit a 1 s , vis its to nursing schools, Red Cross and hospital volunteer work, and me d i cal seminars are just a few of the many activities in which the members are involved. 80

Future Teachers

Throughout the scholastic year the club IS activities are directed toward this goal. These activities include baby-sitting, tutoring, correcting papers, observing classes, teaching C . C .0 . , and giving book reports, and are designed to give each student practical experience in her future career.

81

Glee Clubs-junior-Senior The Junior-Senior Glee Club , one of the oldest traditions at Julienne, moves forever forward. Under the direction of Miss Rose Gyspers, the girls sing a variety of selections some which preserve the past and others which reflect the cul ture of our own time s. Membership in this organization is coveted, and the l.ong hours of rehearsal are always rewarded by a polished performance.

82

Sophomore The Sophomore Glee Club is the forerunner of the Junior -Senior Glee Club. Here the members are trained by Miss Gysbers, and are given the experience necessary for the following yea r . The group is, however, outstanding in its own right. Participation in both the Christmas concert and the spring concert is anxiously ant i c i pat e d by the members.

NFL The National Forensic League tries to provide its adept young articulators with the opportunity of competing in area speech contests. As the participants engage in speech tournaments, they become more proficient in the fine arts of drama, comedy, or dec 1 a mat ion. Faultless speech, poise, and dignity are qualities which these young women strive to develop.

Each home room has a representative who regularly reports current news of sports events , social activities, and other happenings. The rewards for participation are annually given to deserving members.

85

League of the Sacred Heart The League of the Scared Heart remains one of the major organizations of Julienne. While striving to promote devotion to the Sacred Heart, a z e a lou s group of dedicated representatives executes this goal by informing the student body of the many activities sponsored 'by this organization. Monthly projects sponsored by this organization. Monthly projects s po n so red for this year include subscriptions to the publications . of the Sac red Heart Messenger, sales of the S. H. and Brownie Day.

M onogram- Yearbook

The Monogram Yearbook is the product of endless hours of work on the part of staff members. This year's theme of change is ill u s t rat e d by the various changes that have taken place not only in the school itself but also in its clubs and activities. The girls' generous giving of time and talent have combined to produce a yearbook t hat the staff as well as the school should be proud of.

Newspaper

During its first year, under the direction of Mrs . Louis Han sma n, the M 0 no g ram has adopted n u mer 0 u s changes. Through the use of personal candids, a roving reporter, controversial editorials, and pertinent school news the Monogram has expanded to better inform and serve the student body.
