me I am a recent UC Berkeley grad with a double major in Product Development a n d L e g a l S t u d i e s . A s h e r a r c h i t e c t u r a l d e s i g n s t u d i o G S I , I h a v e had the pleasure of working with several great young minds, and the tasks of guiding them through their first of many rigorous design studios in the Berkeley CED architectural curriculum. Caroline’s passion and in t e r e s t i n a d v a n c e m e n t d e m o n s t r a t e d g r e a t p o t e n t i a l a n d a b i l i t y to c r e a t e c h a n g e w i t h i n t h e f i e l d . O f c o u r s e m y b e l i e f s w e r e r e i n fo r c e d w h e n I w a s enlightened by her intentions in the realm of architecture and design beyond the studio and classroom. E u r o p e a n I n n o v a t i o n A c a d e m y, a n annual competition hosted by Universite Sophia Antipolis in Nice, France, calls on about 400 internat i o n a l s t u d e n t s to s t a r t a c o m p a n y i n fo u r w e e k s . I n t e a m s o f f i v e , p a r t i c i p a n t s s p e n d a m o n t h p r o to t y p i n g a w e b a n d / o r m o b i l e a p p l i c a t i o n to u l t i m a t e l y p i t c h t h e i r c o n c e p t to a panel of venture capitalists. My team developed Noosta, “the Snapchat of morning alarms.” The freemium And r o i d a p p a l l o w s u s e r s to c o n n e c t with five Facebook friends and send c u s to m s o u n d s o n l y w h e n t h e r e c i p ient is a) asleep and b) accepting s o u n d s to p l a y i n s u c c e s s i o n a t t h e time of their wake up call. Otherwise, the user will be prompted that they a r e u n a b l e to “ n o o s t ” t h e i r u n a v a i l able contact. I helped develop the U I / U X d e s i g n fo r N o o s t a a n d h e l p e d acquire over 200 beta testers.

O v e r t h e c o u r s e of the semester, my team collected data on the emerg e n c y r e s p o n s e s y s t e m i n p l a c e , p e r fo r m e d u s e r n e e d s t e s t i n g , a n d p r o to t y p e d a w e b a p p w e n a m e d B e a r Aware. W i t h B e a r A w a r e , u s e r s s w i p e s i d e w a y s to v i e w t w o d i f fe r e n t l i v e t e x t fe e d s . U s e r s c a n n o t o n l y c o m ment on existing emergencies, flag a user’s comment, and “like”other user responses, but they can also post their own emergency reports. Using Arc GIS geo-coding software, our team designed an interface that spacializes “tweets” that contain the BearAware handle, thus giving a b r o a d e r a u d i e n c e t h e o p p o r t u n i t y to c o n t r i b u t e to t h e BearAware open source data network.

Bunk Charge Spring 2014 CITRIS Invention Lab Fellowship UC Berkeley A s a C I T R I S I n v e n t i o n L a b F e l l o w, I s u b m i t t e d a d e s i g n p r o p o s a l fo r a n e l e v a t e d , d e t a c h a b l e c h a r g i n g s t a t i o n fo r u s e w i t h c o l l e g e d o r m i to r y b u n k beds that would not only organize chargers but also eliminate clutter a r o u n d t h e r o o m . T h e F e l l o w s h i p g r a n t e d m y p a r t n e r a n d I a c c e s s to t h e Invention Lab, a rapid fabrication shop in the College of Engineering. My partner and I constructed a 23” x 13” x 4” shelf out of 1/8” plywood using t h e L a b ’ s l a s e r c u t t e r , b a n d s a w, a n d s a n d e r s . We d r i l l e d i n u n d e r - s h e l f s u p p o r t , a n d a d h e r e d h o o k s to t h e b a c k o f t h e s h e l f i n o r d e r t h a t i t b e hung on the frame of a bunkbed. M y p a r n t e r a n d I c o n s t r u c t e d a h i g h f i d e l i t y p r o to t y p e t h a t w e s u c c e s s fully tested on a bunk bed in a sorority house. BunkCharge, as we dubbed o u r p r o j e c t , c a n a c c o m m o d a t e a l a p to p a n d t w o p h o n e s c o m fo r t a b l y, a n d c a n c h a r g e u p to e i g h t d e v i c e s . T h e e i g h t fo o t l o n g e x t e n s i o n c o r d c a n accommodate inconveniently located outlets while the hooks are sized to a c c o m m o d a t e a v a r i e t y o f b e d f r a m e s . I n N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 2 , o u r u m b r e l la organization, Global Brigades, announced a design competition fo r a r a i n w a t e r h a r v e s t s y s t e m a s a r e t r o f i t to a s c h o o l o u r c h a p t e r h a d h e l p e d d e s i g n t w o y e a r s p r i o r. P o t a b l e w a t e r a r r i v e s e v e r y d a y to Honduran households, but is only chlorinated once every two weeks. G i v e n t h e s c a r c i t y o f p u r i f i e d w a t e r , o u r g o a l w a s to e l i m i n a t e t h e p r a c t i c e o f u s i n g p r e c i o u s d r i n k i n g w a t e r fo r t h e s c h o o l g a r d e n s a n d to i l e t s , a n d i m p l e m e n t a s y s t e m t h a t c a n p r o v i d e l i g h t l y f i l t e r e d g r e y w a t e r i n s t e a d . Project Juana Spring 2014 Global Architecture Brigades UC Berkeley In Spring 2014, Global Architecture Brigades at Berkeley was sel e c t e d to p a r t i c i p a t e i n a p i l o t d e s i g n / b u i l d p r o g r a m fo r o u r u m b r e l l a o r g a n i z a t i o n , G l o b a l B r i g a d e s . D o n a J u a n a , a r e s i d e n t o f E l C a n to n , Honduras was the beneficiary of a remodel and retrofit our team des i g n e d a f t e r v i s i s t i n g h e r h o m e i n J a n u a r y. O u r t w o g o a l s w e r e to a ) i m p r o v e t h e q u a l i t y o f J u a n a ’ s l i fe f r o m i m p r o v i n g m o b i l i t y to s h e l t e r i n g h e r f r o m t h e e l e m e n t s a n d b ) to p r e s e r v e t h e i n t e g r i t y a n d s e n t i m e n t a l v a l u e o f t h e h o u s e i t s e l f. We fo c u s e d o n f i x i n g t h e s t r u c t u r a l d a m a g e to t h e r o o f, a n d d e s i g n e d a c o r r u g a t e d m e t a l r o o f s y s t e m to be built underneath the existing roof as a support structure and barrie r a g a i n s t t h e e l e m e n t s . S e c o n d , to i m p r o v e m o b i l i t y a r o u n d t h e s i t e , w e d e s i g n e d a s y s t e m o f fo u r r a m p s a n d t w o c o n c r e t e p a t h w a y s to Juana’s chicken coop and spigot. The concrete pathways we hope will reduce both Juana’s contact with mud during the rainy season as well as the risk of tripping. Third, we designed a basic gutter system that fe e d s i n to a n a e r i a l g a r d e n - a s e r i e s o f t h r e e g u t t e r s l i n e d w i t h r o c k s a n d f i l l e d w i t h a s s o r t e d p l a n t s . Caffe Strada redesign Fall 2013 Architecture 105 UC Berkeley In my Junior year “Deep Green Design” Studio, I was tasked with red e s i g n i n g a l o c a l B e r k e l e y l a n d m a r k , C a f fe S t r a d a , to m e r i t P l a t i n u m L E E D C e r t i f i c a t i o n a s w e l l a s m e e t t h e c r i t e r i a fo r a n e t z e r o e n e r g y building. The design process spanned the entire Fall semester, comp r i s e d o f 1 3 w e e k l y d e l i v e r a b l e s a n d a f i n a l p r e s e n t a t i o n b o o k fo r w h i c h I l a s e r c u t a n d h i n g e d a w o o d e n c o v e r. Santa rosa School Spring 2013 Global Architecture Brigades UC Berkeley I f a c i l i t a t e d a o n e - u n i t c l a s s i n t e n d e d to e x p o s e s t u d e n t s o f a v a r i e t y o f a c a d e m i c b a c k g r o u n d s to t h e d e s i g n / b u i l d p r o c e s s t h a t g l o b a l a r chitecture brigades practices. The final project was a collaborative e f fo r t , a n d fo l l o w s t h e p a r a m e t e r s o f a d e s i g n / b u i l d c o m p e t i t i o n fo r a rural Honduran school from two years ago. The allowed materials included wood, concrete, corrugated metal, clay tile, recycled materials, s to n e , a d o b e , b r i c k , C M U ’ s , g r a v e l a n d s a n d . T h e d e s i g n fe a t u r e s a g l a s s - l e s s r o o f i n g s y s t e m w i t h c l e r e s to r y o p e n ings and light shelves that is repeated throughout the complex, and o r i e n t e d a p p r o p r i a t e l y to t h e p r e v a i l i n g E a s t e r l y w i n d s . T h e c a fe t e r i a i s c o m p r i s e d o f m o v i n g s l a t t e d p a r t i t i o n s a n d a s l a t t e d N o r t h w e s t w a l l to assist with ventilation during year-long heat waves. The partitions also a l l o w fo r a m u l t i p u r p o s e s u b r o o m . T h e p r o g r a m r e q u i r e m e n t s i n c l u d e d 2 5 l i n e a l fe e t o f w a l l s p a c e fo r l i g h t s e n s i t i v e d r a w i n g s , 5 f r e e - s t a n d i n g s c u l p t u r e s , 4 5 - 5 0 fe e t o f l i n e a l w a l l s p a c e fo r m o u n t e d w o r k a n d s e a t s to a c c o m m o d a t e u p to s i x p e o p l e . T h e b u i l d i n g fo o t p r i n t w a s s e t a t 2 4 ’ x 3 8 ’ w i t h a m a x i m u m c e i l i n g h e i g h t o f 1 5 fe e t . O u r d e s i g n fe a t u r e s a c i r c u m a m b u l a to r y h a l l fo r t h e m o u n t e d a r t w o r k a n d c e n t e r a t r i u m fo r t h e s e a t s a n d s c u l p t u r e s . M y team of three designed an array of tubular skylights in the central atrium i n a d d i t i o n to t w o s k e w e d t r a p e z o i d a l c l e r e s to r y w i n d o w s o n t h e S o u t h a n d North walls. The trapezoidal windows were designed with the museum’s latitude in mind, and maximize sunlight in the space given the sun’s known path and altitude angle. To g e n e r a t e c a l c u l a t i o n s fo r t h e a m o u n t a n d q u a l i t y o f D a y l i g h t i n t h e museum, my team conducted a series of simulations with software, a hel i o d o n , a n d O v e r c a s t s k y s i m u l a to r i n B e r k e l e y ’ s C e n t e r fo r t h e B u i l t E n v i r o n m e n t l a b o r a to r y. We u s e d t h e p r o g r a m S H A D E to p r o d u c e t h e s u n path shading diagrams pictured at the left, which indicate at which times t h r o u g h o u t t h e y e a r t h e g l a z i n g i s e x p o s e d to d i r e c t s u n l i g h t . We u s e d t h e p r o g r a m E c o t e c t to a s s i s t w i t h t h e s e c a l c u l a t i o n s . F o r o u r f i n a l p r e s e n t a t i o n , w e to o k p i c t u r e s a t t h r e e l o c a t i o n s i n s i d e t h e m o d e l , t i l t i n g t h e g l a z i n g to w a r d s t h e s u n a c c o r d i n g to e a c h t i m e a n d d a t e w e w e r e t r y i n g to s i m ulate.

roof patio Summer 2011 Freelance Los Angeles, CA I d e s i g n e d a l o w - c o s t a n d e n v i r o n m e n t a l l y c o n s c i o u s p a t i o s p a c e fo r a s e c t i o n o f a f l a t r o o f. To s t a r t , I w a n t e d to c o v e r t h e u n c o m fo r t a b l e a n d r e flective white stucco ground cover without using materials that promulgated mold and other organisms underneath it. I also needed something that w o u l d b o t h d r a i n a n d n o t c l o g t h e g u t t e r s o n e i t h e r s i d e o f t h e r o o f. I f i n a l l y s e t t l e d w i t h S t a r P r o a r t i f i c i a l g r a s s f r a m e d by M u l t y S y n t h e t i c R u bb e r Ti l e s (recycled from old car tires!) from Home Depot. I ordered cushions from Sunbrella with waterproof and sun-resistant covers and recycled fillings. I b o u g h t t h e fo l d i n g t a b l e f r o m C r a t e & B a r r e l , a n d t h e c e d a r p l a n t e r f r o m OSH. As far as lighting, I procured two strings of solar-powered lights from Ta r g e t , a n d p l a c e d t e a l i g h t s i n t h r e e r e c y c l e d g l a s s j a r s . T h e t w o l a n t e r n s and all other succulents pictured are plants I had around the house. The grass in the long wooden planter is artificial and from Michael’s. I had pur chased the wrought iron rack from a flea market, and then hand-stained it.

The final model highlights potential future urban infrastructure that we collectively believe would reinvigorate these two local economies, enhance the areas’ social networks, a n d p r o v i d e l o n g t e r m i m p r o v e m e n t s a n d s o l u t i o n s to t h e p r e e x i s t i n g e c o l o g y. T h e e n t i r e g r o u p c o l l a b o r a t e d to c r e a t e t h i s m o d e l , a n d r o t a t e d b e t w e e n t e a m s fo c u s i n g o n t h e w a t e r f r o n t , t h e B Q E h i g h w a y, e t c . M y t e a m s p e c i f i c a l l y w a s r e s p o n s i b l e fo r s t u d y i n g s e d i m e n t d e p o s i t patterns, and creating a scheme involving a series of G a b i o n Wa l l s to b o t h s c u l p t s e d i m e n t m a s s e s a n d d e velop a tidal ecosystem over time. Other areas I worked o n i n c l u d e t h e “ G r e e n Wa y ” - a c h a i n o f e y e l e t - s h a p e d , e l e v a t e d c o m m u n i t y g a r d e n s , a n d t h e “ Ve r t i c a l P a r t y ” - a n i c k n a m e fo r t h e m o d u l a r , m u l t i - p u r p o s e m e g a s t r u c t u r e that serves as one of the centerpieces of the model.

Occupy Oakland Shelter Fall 2012 Global Architecture Brigades UC Berkeley At the climax of Occupy Oakland, Global Architecture Brigades visited the downto w n e n c a m p m e n t s to s u r v e y t h e t e m p o r a r y s t r u c t u r e s a s i n s p i r a t i o n fo r o u r o w n future design proposals. That month, we g e n e r a t e d a d e s i g n p r o p o s a l fo r a n e x tremely low cost, acoustically functional temporary timber structure that had the p o t e n t i a l to b e m a s s p r o d u c e d b y w a y o f “punch-out,� interlocking components.


3 Situations Fall 2012 Environmental Design 11B UC Berkeley

T h e f i r s t p r o j e c t fo r m y s o p h o m o r e s t u dio, Environmental Design 11B, called fo r t h r e e “ s i t u a t i o n s ” o r s t r u c t u r e s d e rived from paper models that could be placed on a site under a freeway overpass in Oakland. The project description states, “Think of the three connected events as a synthetic ‘trilogy’ in an ‘arc h i t e c t u r a l g a r d e n . ’ T h e p r o g r a m i s to m o v e , e x p e r i e n c e s p a c e a n d l i g h t , s to p , and move some more.” I began with two interlocked paper pinwheels and did a v i s u a l s t u d y o f h o w to r q u e c o u l d t r a n s fo r m t h e e n t i r e s t r u c t u r e . I c o n s t r u c t ed a faceted MDF base along the same construction lines of the initial mode l . A d d i t i o n a l l y, I l o o k e d a t fo l d s i n t h e l a n d s c a p e a s a m e a n s to c h a n n e l t r a f f i c t h r o u g h t h e s i t e a n d c o m p e l v i s i to r s to e x p e r i e n c e S e r r a - l i k e s e n s a t i o n s o f equilibrium and motion.


Morphosis Spring 2012 Environmental Design 11A UC Berkeley This three-part conceptual design assignment involved analyzing the “ l i fe fo r c e ” o f a c a c t u s , a n d t r a n s l a t i n g t h a t i n to b o t h a 1 8 ” x 2 4 ” w a t e r color diagram and an approximately 18” x 18” x 18” wood model. The final p r o j e c t i s a p h o to s h o p p e d i m a g e o f the model on the banks of the Seine as a proposed public art installation.
