The Humane Education Trust, better known simply as Humane Education, is committed to promoting values in education through literacy and Life Skills / Life Orientation. By rekindling the spirit of care and respect for life, learners find a new sense of selfesteem and confidence. They begin to understand that only through their own individual actions can they begin to lay claim to their constitutional right to human dignity.

Title: The Great Cage Escape Author: Louise van der Merwe Learning Area: Literacy, Languages, Life Orientation Grades: 4 - 7 Language: English Type of Resource: Fiction Description: Short novel. Colour illustrations. The birds in a pet shop think they are happy until a brown box punched full of air holes is left overnight on their front door step. The creature inside looks very weird at first. But as his feathers begin to grow, his true identity becomes apparent, and the stories he tells inspire the pet shop birds to pull off a Great Cage Escape. This is a story that encourages respect for all forms of life and helps learners realise that heaven can be right here on earth if we choose to make it so.

“Mr O slipped his hand into the mitt, reached inside the box and pulled out a creature like nothing we had seen before. He placed it quickly into a big bird cage and shut the door. “What is it?” asked Becca. “Well, it’s got a big beak and two big bird-like feet,” observed Mr O. “But no feathers,” mused the girl. “Just a wrinkly crinkly pink skin with little spikes sticking out, like a hedgehog or a porcupine.”

Title: Farm Animals and Us Authors: Compassion in World Farming (UK) Learning Area Natural Sciences, Economic and Management Sciences, Life Orientation Grades: 8 - 12 Language: English Type of Resource: Multimedia DVD Description: DVD/Video - 25 minutes – With increasing concern about the way our food is produced, this resource builds awareness, increases understanding and promotes discussion and debate about farmed animal welfare. The Farm Animals and Us films (updated 2014) make a reasoned case for higher welfare farming whilst leaving the students open to consider personal consumer choices. Issues around the selective breeding and human food chains are covered. The films are designed to provoke thought and discussions are guaranteed to hold interest and attention! Farm Animals and Us ( 17 minutes) is aimed at students aged 10 - 15 but teachers assure us that it works for older audiences where a shorter and less detailed film is required. Farm Animals and Us 2 (25 minutes) covers the issues in more detail for ages 14 to adult (including college and university audiences). We suggest audiences should be advised that the films include scenes of animal confinement and separation of young from their mothers which some will find distressing. The longer film for older audiences also contains brief footage of piglet tail-docking. Many students prefer not to join in the whole group discussion but are happy to talk in small groups. The worksheets and discussion activities are designed to encourage balanced small group discussions and self-analysis whiles teaching about farming using many concrete examples. College films The DVD-ROM also contains college films for those studying animal welfare in more details - What is Animal Welfare ( 6 minutes - 2013) and Animal welfare aspects of good agriculture practice - pig production ( 25 minutes - 2006)

Archive films We also include 3 archive films for students aged 14 and over which are widely used to promote discussion about animal welfare, sustainability, and the ethical implications of science. Eat Less Meat (17 minutes- 2004) WTO - Wrecking Animal Protection (11 Minutes - 2002) and Genetic Engineering and Farm Animals ( 19 minutes - 1997) Again, we recommend preparing audiences for any distressing contest (for example, the WTO film contains scenes of animal slaughter and trapping). Archive worksheets on genetic engineering are provided in PDF format.
