Tenth Sunday After Pentecost

August 21, 2011

Welcome to Cityview Presbyterian Church

Community Life: After the Service

To Our Guests: Visiting a church can be an intimidating experience. We are glad that you are here, and we hope to remove as much of that awkwardness as we can from your visit to Cityview. Our worship service usually lasts about 75 minutes. This worship guide will help you navigate the service. There are short paragraphs on the next page to explain each part of the service. The service is designed to be accessible to you, whether you’ve spent years in the church or you’ve never been to a church service in your life. During the service, we will try to help you understand how the message of Jesus can apply to your life today. If you are new to Cityview or just visiting, we would love to know that you were here. We have clipboards next to each row: we call those our “Connection Cards”. Connection Cards are a way for you to let us know whatever information you might want us to know and to request any information from us that you might need. Pastor Dan Adamson (dadamson@cityviewchicago.org) is available to answer questions, as well.

Each week, we linger for fellowship with one another. Please join us for refreshments in the cafeteria.

Community Groups In addition to weekly worship, we offer small groups (community groups, men’s and women’s bible studies, book studies) that meet throughout the week. We want all of our members and regular attenders to be intentional about building trusting and meaningful spiritual relationships. For a complete list of our small groups, please visit our website (www.cityviewchicago.org) or fill out one of our “connection cards” for more information.

For Children: Children of all ages are welcome in the worship service. Nursery is provided during the service for children 2 years of age and younger. Children ages three through 5 grade are given the choice of attending Sunday school classes beginning during the greeting portion of the service. th

If you have any questions about children’s ministry at Cityivew, please contact Children’s Ministry Coordinator Hilary Clark (hilary.r.clark@gmail.com).

Benediction Leader:

May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

All:

And also with you.

Leader:

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.

All:

Amen.

Dismissal Leader:

Let us go now to serve the world as those who love our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

All:

Thanks be to God!

The Liturgy Preparing for Worship The goal of our time of gathering is to engage with God together, listening to him in his Word and speaking to him in prayer and song. Because we often enter this time tired, overwhelmed and distracted, we take a few moments at the beginning of our meeting to prepare to meet God in worship. Call to Worship We need to be “called” to come and worship God because we default to thinking the world revolves around our needs and agendas, and also because we struggle to believe that God truly wants us to draw near to him. The call to worship focuses our attention on God and prepares us to meet him. Confession of Sin The Scriptures declare that each of us has failed in the way we act toward God and each other. We confess our sin to be honest and transparent about this reality and to admit our ongoing dependence on the mercy of God through Jesus. We confess as a community to show our unity even in our brokenness. Assurance of Grace We confess our sins not just to admit what is true, but also to be reminded again of the truth that Jesus came into this world to save sinners; and all of our sin has been forgiven through him. Every week, following our confession, we hear God speak to us in Scripture of this forgiveness so that our faith might be strengthened. Worship Through Giving Because money is so powerfully tied to our hearts, this is a valuable expression of worship as we acknowledge that everything we have comes from God and belongs to him. If you are visiting with us, we are just glad you are here- please do not feel obligated to give. The Sermon Some view the Sermon as a way to get principles for “right” living. In reality, as we open the Scripture we corporately encounter Christ. Therefore, as you listen, pray to be open to the Spirit’s leading, exhortation, encouragement, and healing. Communion Communion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal for Christians. We welcome all Christians - those who look to Christ alone for salvation, who are in good standing with His Church, and who seek strength to live more faithfully to their Savior - to join in this sacrament. The Benediction God always gets the last word in our encounter of worship. For Christians, it is always a word of blessing and sending to live our lives in the light of the reality of the Gospel of Christ.

Help My Unbelief

ORDER OF WORSHIP Preparing for Worship “Faith is not in itself a meritorious act; the merit is in the One to Whom it is directed. Faith is a redirecting of our sight, a getting out of the focus of our own vision and getting God into focus. Sin has twisted our vision inward and made it self-regarding. Unbelief has put self where God should be, and is perilously close to the sin of Lucifer who said “I will set my throne above the throne of God.” Faith looks out instead of in, and the whole life falls into line.” --A. W. Tozer

Prayer of Adoration

Prayers for Reflection Prayer for those searching for truth Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. As I consider the reasons for doing so, grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

Prayer for those struggling with sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and faithfully follow you in life. Amen.

Prayer of belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

Prayer of commitment Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.

Leader:

Loving God, we come to you in worship and thanksgiving. You are greater than we can understand;

All:

Open our eyes that we may see the wonderful truths you have shown to us in Jesus.

Leader:

You are more loving than our hearts can respond to;

All:

Help us to give ourselves to you in worship so that we learn what you want us to be.

Leader:

You are wiser than we can know;

All:

Still our minds as we worship you so that we can understand the things you are saying to us.

Leader:

Loving God, in Jesus you chose to come to the world in humility. You chose the path the world saw as foolish. You used what the world considered weak.

All:

We worship and adore you. Amen.

Doxology Praise God, from whom all blessings flow Praise Him, all creatures here below Praise Him above, ye heavenly host Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

Hymn of Praise

Father, Long Before Creation

1. Father, long before creation Thou hadst chosen us in love, And that love so deep, so moving, Draws us close to Christ above. Still it keeps us, still it keeps us. Firmly fixed in Christ alone.

4. Loving Father now before Thee We will ever praise Thy love, And our songs will sound unceasing 'Til we reach our home above, Giving glory, giving glory To our God and to the Lamb;

2. Though the world may change its fashion, Yet our God is e'er the same; His compassion and His covenant Through all ages will remain. God's own children, God's own children Must forever praise His name.

Giving glory, giving glory To our God and to the Lamb.

3. God's compassion is my story, Is my boasting all the day; Mercy free and never failing Moves my will, directs my way. God so loved us, God so loved us That His only Son He gave. 12

Hymn of Praise

Rock of Ages

God Strengthens Us

1. Rock of Ages, when the day seems long From this labor and this heartache, I have come The skies will wear out, but you remain the same Rock of Ages, I praise your name

Confession of Faith –

2. Rock of Ages, you have brought me near You have poured out your life-blood, your love, your tears To make this stone heart come alive again Rock of Ages, forgive my sin. Rock of ages. Rock of ages. Bind your children until the kingdom comes. Rock of ages, your will be done. 3. Rock of Ages, when in want or rest, My desperate need for such a Savior I confess Pull these idols out from my heart embrace. Rock of Ages, I need your grace. 4. Rock of Ages, broken scorned for me. Who am I that you would die to make me free? To give me glory, (you) took the death and pain. Rock of Ages, my Offering.

From Our World Belongs to God

Leader:

Our hope for a new creation is not tied to what humans can do, for we believe that one day every challenge to God!s rule will be crushed. His kingdom will fully come and the Lord will rule. Come, Lord Jesus, come.

All:

We long for that day when our bodies are raised, the Lord wipes away our tears, and we dwell forever in the presence of God. We will take our place in the new creation, where there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, and the Lord will be our light. Come, Lord Jesus, come.

Leader:

On that day we will see our Savior face to face, sacrificed Lamb and triumphant King, just and gracious. He will set all things right.

All:

We live confidently, anticipating his coming, offering him our daily lives— our acts of kindness, our loyalty and our love— knowing that he will weave even our sins and sorrows into his sovereign purpose. Come, Lord Jesus, come.

Prayer of Thanksgiving and Consecration

Chorus 5. Rock of Ages, "It is done!" you cried. The curtain's torn and I see justice satisfied Now write your mercy, on my heart and hands. Rock of ages, in faith I stand. 6. Rock of Ages, my great hope secure. Your promise holds just like an anchor to my soul Bind your children with cords of love and grace. Rock of Ages, we give you praise.

Leader:

The Lord be with you.

All:

And also with you.

Leader:

Lift up your hearts.

All:

We lift them up to the Lord.

Leader:

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

All:

It is right to give him thanks and praise.

God Speaks To Us

Lord, we believe! Help our unbelief! We hear this cry from Scripture, and it echoes our own. We long to stand firm in faith and live daily in a way that honors you in every way. But our unbelief, our doubts, our fears, our selfish natures get in the way. Forgive us when our unbelief causes us to put our trust in ourselves or in things. Forgive us, O Lord, so that we might place all our trust in you for every gift, every blessing, and every hope that we have. We thank you for the gift of faith. Strengthen it in us to the glory of your name. Amen.

Sermon Text – Mark 9: 14- 29 14

And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them, and scribes arguing with them. 15 And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed and ran up to him and greeted him. 16 And he asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?” 17 And someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a spirit that makes him mute. 18 And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid. So I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.” 19 And he answered them, “O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.” 20 And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. 21 And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. 22 And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.” 23 And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.” 24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!” 25 And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” 26 And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.” 27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose. 28 And when he had entered the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” 29 And he said to them, “This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.” Leader: All:
