Welcome to Cityview Presbyterian Church

C TYVIEW

presby terian chu rch

To Our Guests: Visiting a church can be an intimidating experience. We are glad that you are here, and we hope to remove as much of that awkwardness as we can from your visit to Cityview. Our worship service usually lasts about 90 minutes. This worship guide will help you navigate the service. There are short paragraphs on the next page to explain each part of the service. The service is designed to be accessible to you, whether you’ve spent years in the church or you’ve never been to a church service in your life. During the service, we will try to help you understand how the message of Jesus can apply to your life today. If you are new to Cityview or just visiting, we would love to know that you were here. The Connection Cards, which can be found along the center aisle, are a place for you to let us know whatever information you might want us to know, and to request any information from us that you might need. Pastor Dan Adamson (dadamson@cityviewchicago.org) is always enthusiastic to meet you in person, as well.

For Children: Children of all ages are welcome in the worship service. Nursery is provided during the service for children 3 years of age and younger. Children ages four through 5th grade are given the choice of attending Sunday school classes beginning during the opportunities and concerns portion of the service. If you have any questions about children’s ministry at Cityivew, please contact Children’s Ministry Coordinator Lynda Adamson (lyndabadamson@gmail.com).

Community Life: Before the Service Each week, we take time before the service to fellowship and prepare for worship. Refreshments are served starting at 9:45 AM outside of the sanctuary. Community Groups Community Groups are the primary way to get to know people at Cityview. At a Community Group, you will be invited to deepen your spiritual involvement with others. You will find a weekly opportunity to study the scripture passage for the upcoming week’s sermon and pray together. The Liturgy Preparing in Stillness

We often come into worship tired, overwhelmed and distracted. If we are honest we are not prepared to worship God. Each week, we take a few moments to quiet our hearts to prepare to meet God in worship. Please take this time to read the reflections, look over the rest of the service or pray as we anticipate being called into worship.

Call to Worship

We need to be “called” to come and worship God because we default to thinking the world revolves around our needs and agendas- and also because we struggle to believe that God truly wants us to draw near to him. The call to worship focuses our attention on God and prepares us to meet him.

Confession of Sin

Because sin is so pervasive in both our individual and corporate lives, we are called to come before God with honesty and transparency, confessing our failures and brokenness and asking for both healing and forgiveness through Jesus Christ. We confess corporately to show our unity even in our brokenness.

Assurance of Grace

Christ has given the Church authority to declare forgiveness of sins in his name. Because of this, when the liturgist proclaims that your sins are forgiven, you can know that Christ agrees.

The Sermon

Some view the sermon as a way to get principles for “right” living. In reality, as we open the Scripture we corporately encounter Christ. Therefore, as you listen, pray to be open to the Spirit’s leading, exhortation, encouragement, and healing.

Communion

Communion, also called the Lord’s Supper or the Eucharist, is the family meal for Christians. We welcome all Christians - those who look to Christ alone for salvation, who are in good standing with his church, and who seek strength to live more faithfully to their Savior - to join in this sacrament.

Worship Through Giving

Because money is so powerfully tied to our hearts, this is a valuable expression of worship as we acknowledge that everything we have comes from God and belongs to him. If you are visiting with us, we are glad you are here- please do not feel obligated to give.

The Benediction

God always gets the last word in our encounter of worship. For Christians, it is always a word of blessing and sending to live our lives in the light of the reality of the Gospel of Christ.

ORDER OF WORSHIP The Spirit is given to begin the work of making God’s future real in the present. . . Just as the resurrection of Jesus opened up the unexpected world of God’s new creation, so the Spirit comes to us from that new world, the world waiting to be born, the world in which, according to the old prophets, peace and justice will flourish and the wolf and the lamb will lie down side by side. - N. T. Wright Without the Holy Spirit, Christian discipleship would be inconceivable, even impossible. There can be no life without the life giver, no understanding without the Spirit of truth, no fellowship without the unity of the Spirit, no Christlikeness of character apart from his fruit, no effective witness without his power. As a body without breath is a corpse, so the church without the Spirit is dead. - John Stott

God Calls Us Call to Worship* Spirit of the living God, we long for you again on this day of Pentecost. Come, Holy Spirit. Like a rushing wind that sweeps away all barriers, Come, Holy Spirit. Like tongues of fire that set our hearts aflame, Come, Holy Spirit. With speech that units the Babel of our tongues, Come, Holy Spirit. With love that overlaps the boundaries of race and nation, Come, Holy Spirit. With power from above to make our weakness strong, Come, Holy Spirit. Amen.

Spirit of the Living God Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me. *please stand if able

Prayer of Invocation Almighty and Holy Spirit, our comforter, pure, living, true— illumine, govern, sanctify us, and confirm our hearts and minds in the faith and in all genuine consolation; persevere and rule over us so that, dwelling in the house of the Lord all the days of our lives, we may behold the Lord and praise him with joyful spirit, in union with all the heavenly church. Amen.

Oh, Our Lord

Chorus: Oh, oh, oh, our Lord! Oh, oh, oh, our Lord! How majestic is Your name in all the Earth We behold the rising sun. The earth awakes, Your hope has come We look to You, we long for You, oh Lord

We behold the breaking dawn. The light that shines over everyone We look to You, we long for You, oh Lord (Chorus) We behold the falling rain, Like waters rise, flood this place We reach for You, we cling to You, oh Lord! Oh Your name is a light in the darkness Oh Your name is the word of truth Oh Your name, oh Your name (Repeat) Words and Music: Paul Baloche & Leslie Jordan

God Cleanses Us Prayer of Confession The Spirit of the Lord fills the world and knows our every word and deed. Let us then open ourselves to the Lord and confess our sins in penitence and faith. Almighty God, who sent the promised power of the Holy Spirit to fill disciples with willing faith: We confess that we resist the force of your Spirit among us, that we are slow to serve you and reluctant to spread the good news of your love. God, have mercy on us. Forgive our divisions and by your Spirit draw us together. Inflame us with a desire to do your will and to be your faithful people for the sake of your Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ. 5

Silent Confession Assurance of Grace* — based on Ezekiel 36:24-28

I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries. I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees. You will be my people, and I will be your God. Friends in Christ: by the power of the Spirit, we are united with Christ and given a new spirit. Live in the joy and peace of that assurance. Amen. Brothers and sisters, you have heard God’s holy demands and have confessed your sins to him. Do you believe that Jesus Christ, by his perfect life, sacrificial death, and glorious resurrection has atoned for your sins and satisfied the wrath of God for you? We do.

Passing of the Peace — from John 13:34 Hear the teaching of Christ: “A new command I give you, that you love one another as I have loved you.” The peace of Christ be with you all.

Rejoice the Lord is King

God Speaks To Us Old Testament Reading — Psalm 104:24-34 O LORD, how manifold are your works! In wisdom have you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. 25 Here is the sea, great and wide, which teems with creatures innumerable, living things both small and great. 26 There go the ships, and Leviathan, which you formed to play in it. 27 These all look to you, to give them their food in due season. 28 When you give it to them, they gather it up; when you open your hand, they are filled with good things. 29 When you hide your face, they are dismayed;

when you take away their breath, they die and return to their dust. 30 When you send forth your Spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the ground. 31 May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD rejoice in his works, 32 who looks on the earth and it trembles, who touches the mountains and they smoke! 33 I will sing to the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being. 34 May my meditation be pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the LORD.

24

New Testament Reading — John 14:15-18 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You

know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. 18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Sermon — Filled with the Spirit Reverend Dan Adamson

Sermon Text — Acts 2:1-13 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language.

And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”

God Strengthens Us Confession of Faith — from the Heidelberg Catechism In his divinity, majesty, grace, and Spirit, Christ is not absent from us for a moment. By the Spirit’s power we make the goal of our lives not earthly things but the things above where Christ is, sitting at God’s right hand. Through the Holy Spirit Christ pours out his gifts from heaven upon us his members. The Spirit, as well as the Father and the Son, is eternal God. The Spirit has been given to us personally so that by true faith the Spirit makes us share in Christ and all his blessings, comforts us, and remains with us forever.

Words of Institution We break bread in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and proclaim the mystery of the faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Christ our Passover has been sacrificed for us; Therefore, let us keep the feast.

Distribution of the Bread and the Cup Prayers for Reflection Prayer for those searching for truth Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. As I consider the reasons for doing so, grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

Prayer of belief Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

Prayer of commitment Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.

Prayer for those struggling with sin Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and faithfully follow you in life. Amen.

The Lord is here. His Spirit is with us. May the Spirit,
who hovered over the waters when the world began, and who set the church afire upon the Day of Pentecost, bring the world alive with the love of Christ,
who died, but now lives and reigns forever;
and the blessing of God almighty,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
be among you, and remain with you always. Amen.

SUNDAY PRAYER There will not be Sunday Prayer this evening. We will resume next week at Cityview Commons (841 W Monroe) to pray for each other, the church, and the world. THE DOCTRINE OF SALVATION SATURDAY, JUNE 13 / 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM / 841 W. MONROE, UNIT B Easter is the time of the year when we celebrate the good news that God has saved us in Christ. To celebrate this truth and to increase our Christian discipleship, we will spend five weeks during Easter reflecting on the meaning of this good news. We will ask “what is the Gospel?” and “what does it mean that God saves us in Christ?” We will examine the meaning of the doctrines of justification, sanctification, and God’s election. We will ask questions about human freedom in relation to God’s predestination, aiming to deepen our understanding of the significance of God’s salvation offered to us in Christ. DISCOVER CITYVIEW - MEET & GREET SATURDAY, JUNE 6, 7:00 - 9:00 PM / 841 W.
