HELLO

HELLO FROM YOUR

2 //

HEAD OF SPORT It is my pleasure to welcome you to City’s 2021/22 season of Sport. For many of you, this may be the first time on campus or even at City, but rest assured we have lots in store for your physical activity, wellbeing and social needs this year.

While we can all agree that last year’s season of sport was challenging in terms of getting our teams out due to Covid-19 restrictions, our fantastic CitySport facility was able to open to our students, staff and members of the public. Some club training sessions were held and regular virtual meetings were the norm for club captains and committee members. To say that we are excited to be getting back to the gym, pitch, field and court is an understatement. Our home of sport and physical activity; CitySport is ready to help keep you fit throughout your time at City. Either through setting a fitness programme, getting balanced with our wellbeing classes or getting involved in our CityActive sessions of flexible, social sport. During Welcome Week you will find CitySport is a great place to meet new people and get involved in your student community. This season we are expecting a full return to activity, with team trials Bill Thompson in the early part of the season and our student sport teams competing Head of Sport & Leisure Services against universities across London and the South East. There are many ways you could become involved whether as a player, a volunteer or a spectator and the Sports and Leisure team are happy to support and guide you. We also look forward to the Spring term when our Varsity series resumes against Kingston University, with 36 teams battling it out over several days, both home and away for the Thames Trophy. Given City’s undefeated record we are expecting the trophy to remain firmly in Clerkenwell. Your first step to getting involved has already been taken by reading this magazine. Take a look through and see what is on offer. We look forward to taking the next steps in your City experience with you. Together with the Wolfpack, you can do great things.

Yours in Sport,

Bill Thompson

Head of Sport and Leisure

Reading this magazine is a great first step to getting involved with the sporting community while completing your studies. Joining the Wolfpack will not only add to your social network, it will provide great opportunities to develop skills for the future, benefitting your CV and adding to your prospects upon graduation. While Covid-19 has introduced some challenges to the running of sport and activities, we have a lot planned for this year. As well as continuing our involvement in Rainbow laces and Odd Socks day, the This Girl Can week will be bigger and better, more events will be added to the Varsity series against Kingston (University) Cougars and we will be launching our new and improved CityActive social sport programme. So, whether you represent one of City’s teams, choose to volunteer at one of the events, coach or officiate for one of the representative teams or simply take part in CityActive, you will be sure to enjoy being part of the pack.

EQUALITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION We welcome everyone from City, University of London’s diverse community to get involved in our sports programme. Our sports clubs, individual sports opportunities and CityActive sessions are open to all City students. The Sport & Leisure Services team at City are committed to promoting diversity, inclusion and equality and ensuring best practice is implemented at all times. All team captains, coaches and staff are encouraged to be welcoming and inclusive when engaging with students participating in sport. The University has also recently launched a new Student Harassment and Bullying Policy and Student Sexual Misconduct Policy. Both policies state that City will work with its students to ensure that their rights, safety and welfare are protected throughout their involvement in any informal or formal procedures relating to any forms of harassment, bullying or sexual misconduct. Future training programmes are planned to heighten awareness of the need for inclusion and equality in sport and will feature techniques to address homophobic, transphobic, sexist, racist and other forms of discriminatory language and behaviour both on and off the playing field. The City Wolfpack has signed up to the UK Government Equalities Office (GEO) Charter on homophobia, biphobia and transphobia in sport, the aim of which is to make sport a welcoming environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. The Charter outlines the importance of creating an environment where everyone is able to participate and enjoy sport, whoever they are and whatever their background is. It also seeks to promote fairness, equality, respect and dignity. The City Wolfpack shares the desire to address the issues that affect participation in sport and work to ensure that opportunities to participate are open to and supportive of everyone.

A CAPTAIN’S VIEW OF SPORT knowledge and experience to help guide those around you to become better. It tests your will to be a mentor and a leader, while developing your attitude to help others succeed over your own personal triumphs. This can be challenging when things aren’t necessarily going your way in a game, but when all the pieces of the puzzle fit together and you can see your hard work coming out through others, leading to success … you can’t ask for much more than that. George Jackson (back row, centre)

How did you get involved in representative sport? I enjoyed most sports at school from a young age and started playing football and hockey for local teams from the age of seven. It was this additional training and match time that helped me become good enough to be selected for school teams. My stepfather, who had a successful career with England and Great Britain hockey, mentored and guided me to take up hockey as my first choice sport. I started to train and play four or five times a week as I enjoyed it so much. The hard work paid off and I was selected as captain of the school hockey team up to the 1st XI. What do you enjoy most about it? Sport is a great way to escape from the pressures of university work; I especially enjoy the team element, which not only leads to your own improvement, but that of your peers too. Playing and competing at a high level encourages me to push myself to be a better player and lead by example, while at the same time learning from other talented players. What do you find challenging and rewarding about being a captain? Being a captain is not about being the best player on the team or the biggest personality in the locker room – it is about being able to use your own abilities,

However, when things go wrong you have to take responsibility for your actions, learn the lessons and keep the team positive by analysing what went wrong and working through solutions for the next time. How do you think this experience has changed you? Despite having senior sporting responsibilities throughout secondary school, being captain of the Men’s Hockey team at City has been an incredible experience from which I have learnt so much more. It has encouraged me to be a better partner to my peers and mentor to others within the team. There are many life lessons I’ve learnt in my time as a captain. Why would you recommend being a captain to others? I wouldn’t recommend it too strongly in case someone tries to take my spot! But honestly, being the captain of a sports team is one of the most rewarding roles you can take as a student; it teaches communication, mentorship and responsibility while still being able to experience the joy of playing the sport you love. It also reflects well on you, both inside and outside of Uni, developing those life skills that help you stand out from the crowd. The only caveat is that you have to really want to do it and have to put in the time to make the most of the opportunity for yourself and the whole team.
