We are delighted to present our programme of employability events for the School of Mathematics, Computer Science & Engineering (SMCSE) 2020/21, designed in collaboration with the School. These events aim to give you an insight into a range of career options and the skills you will need to successfully apply for work experience, summer placements, year-long placements, graduate and postgraduate jobs within the mathematics, computer science and engineering sectors. You will have numerous opportunities to hear from and network with a range of professionals, employers and alumni from the School. This guide will help you identify what you want from a future career, choose a sector or role that interests you and help you to explore and achieve your career goals and maximise your student experience at City. No matter what stage of your career planning, these events can help you:

Help with your career Professional Liaison Unit (PLU) The School of Mathematics, Computer Science & Engineering strongly encourages all of its students to undertake valuable professional experience as part of their degree as it is an excellent way to get an insight in to the industry. The Professional Liaison Unit (PLU) works closely with students and employers to support internships and industrial placements, which usually take place during the penultimate year of study. There are numerous benefits to gaining professional experience, including: • Having a competitive edge when entering the graduate job market • Placements are paid

• Placement students develop professional skills as well as industry-specific technical skills. Each year, the PLU advertise hundreds of placement and internship vacancies which students can access through the SMCSE Placements and Internships Hub. Our students undertake placements with employers ranging from start-up ventures to multinational corporations. Some of our students have also secured graduate employment at the organisation in which they undertook their industrial placement. Each department in the School of Mathematics, Computer Science & Engineering is allocated a specialist Work Based Learning Advisor from the PLU to support their students.

STEM Women technology Fair sponsored by Bloomberg Monday 28th September 2020, 12:00 – 15:30 Sponsored by Bloomberg and hosted virtually, this event will begin with a welcome talk hosted by the event sponsors, followed by plenty of time to network with employers, hear inspirational talks, take part in panel sessions and enjoy a number of professionally run skills sessions. This is the perfect opportunity to hear from inspiring women in tech, build professional networks and be the first to learn about graduate roles in technology. ALL

Behind the scenes with ABB Thursday 1st October 2020, 14:00 – 15:00 ABB is a technology leader that is driving the digital transformation of industries. It has four globally-leading businesses; electrification, industrial automation, motion and robotics and discrete automation. Gradcracker will be going behind the scenes with Jackie McMahon, Head of Talent Management and Talent Acquisition at ABB and you can be in on it too. Understanding the application processes for your dream role in finance for Mathematics students Wednesday 7th October 2020, 13:00 – 14:00 This session will focus on the application processes involved in securing your dream graduate role in finance. The session will help you understand the range of roles available to you and the common recruitment methods used by organisations in the sector. ALL

Making successful applications for engineering and technology graduate programmes Wednesday 14th October 2020, 13:00 – 14:00 This workshop is intended for students who are finding graduate programme application forms lengthy, overwhelming and time-consuming. By attending this workshop, you will discover: • How to navigate online assessments and video interviews • How to answer the competency and motivational questions • The differences behind an employer rejecting you at the online application stage and progressing you to the next stage in the process • Real-life examples from technology and engineering graduate programme application forms. Develop sustainable technologies at Johnson Matthey Thursday 15th October 2020, 14:00 – 15:00 Johnson Matthey is a global leader in sustainable technologies. Introduction to consultancy Monday 19th October 2020, 18:00 – 20:00 This event will give you direct access to employer representatives from a consultancy firm where you can learn more about the journey that’s been taken in their career so far, the challenges they have faced and how they overcame them. You will also learn what steps they took to ensure their success and how you can ensure your success when applying to consultancy firms. ALL

Careers in foreign exchange Thursday 15th October 2020, 18:00 – 19:30 This session aims to introduce the foreign exchange (FX) industry enabling attendees to gain an understanding of different FX transactions and the market participants involved. You will also learn financial vocabulary relating to FX concepts that will be useful to understand prior to an interview. By attending the event you will: • Learn about FX transactions and their role in the financial markets • Enhance your financial vocabulary • Gain an understanding of the roles available in the foreign exchange industry and the skills required to succeed • Understand commercial awareness and how to use it during interviews. STEM Women: London and home counties community event Monday 19th October 2020, 12:00 – 16:00

Developing a behavioural scoring model for customers and estimating the probability of default Thursday 22nd October 2020, 14:00 – 16:00 This workshop is for any student interested in the application of mathematical modelling in financial institutions. We will first explore the use of rating models across different areas of financial institutions and the different steps involved in the development of a behavioural scoring model. This will be followed by a practical case study on how to assess the performance of this model and perform a calibration to calculate the probability of default. Learning outcomes include: • How to develop a behavioural scoring model and its uses across financial institutions • Assess the performance of a behavioural scoring model • Use the output of the behavioural scoring model to estimate the probability of default and how to calibrate the model. What outstanding engineering and technology graduates look like in 2020/2021

Career immersion evenings Throughout October 2020

Wednesday 28th October 2020, 13:00 – 14:00

Spend a unique evening with organisations like NatWest Markets, KPMG, BT, Siemens, the Home Office, Ministry of Defence, Teacher Stern Solicitors, London Metropolitan Police and a body of medical experts for an indepth career immersion covering what it’s really like working in these sectors. The event will also cover opportunities that exist within the industries, what a successful application looks like, mock interviews, CV critiquing, group exercises and more. Back by popular demand, the event will give you the opportunity to undertake two-hour rotations with sectors of your choice, while still enjoying the benefit of all the stalls to have more personal conversations. The event is ideal for students who feel they need some extra support and guidance when it comes to making an informed career choice.

Your degree is providing you with the knowledge and the technical skills you need to succeed in a wide range of careers, however, employers also look for evidence of a wide range of transferable skills and strengths in their graduate hires. This session will look at what skills are most valued by employers and will give you the opportunity to identify ways of strengthening these skills to make your applications stand out. ALL

Discover Frazer-Nash Consultancy’s inside story Thursday 29th October 2020, 14:00 – 15:00 Frazer-Nash Consultancy is a leading systems and engineering technology company. It works across a diverse range of markets, from transport to defence and from conventional power to clean energy. In this event you will get the company’s inside story from Recruitment Manager Ian Devlin along with some practical advice on how you can set your career in motion. ALL

Tech@City Placements and Internships Recruitment Fair October 2020 This Fair is a placements and internship recruitment event with a focus on tech careers, programming, games development, tech support and a variety of technical opportunities. Some of the exhibiting employers will be carrying out informal interviews and will be running tech tests on the day. If you make a good impression and bring along copies of your CV, this event may help you secure your placement or summer internship. UG2 UG3

This event is suitable for any students with a curiosity or interest in working in the technology or engineering sectors in the UK. By the attending this workshop you will discover: • The scope and scale of the UK technology and engineering industries • What the current key sector trends are and the jobs attached to them • How to be competitive as a student job hunter in this ever-changing marketplace. Monday 16th November 2020 Join TARGETjobs for this tailored event to help you build your professional network, connect with recruiters and gain inside advice about applications and what it’s like to work in the engineering sector. You will hear from senior engineers, graduates and interns and other students like you with a passion for engineering. You can use this event to build your network, showcase your interpersonal skills, boost your CV and learn how to succeed in interviews as well as learning how to gain team-working and time-management skills for assessment centres.

Technical interviews can form a core part of the industry recruitment process. It is not always clear what happens in them and how you should handle them. This workshop addresses these questions head on. Attend this event in order to better understand: • Different formats of technical interview • Example questions and how to tackle them • W hat employers and recruiters are really looking for in their questions. STEM careers in a post COVID-19 world Wednesday 11th November – Thursday 12th November 2020 The STEM sector has played a giant role in the world’s response to COVID-19, searching for vaccines, producing ventilators and facilitating speed-dating over Zoom. The world might seem to be moving very slowly right now, but your career does not. RateMyPlacement’s innovation and technology virtual event is your opportunity to interact with employers in the STEM sector. The event will include one-to-one sessions with employers, presentations, access to exclusive downloadable content as well as competitions and giveaways. ALL

Commercial awareness for engineering and technology students Wednesday 18th November 2020, 13:00 – 14:00 Commercial awareness is highly valued by employers and crucial to careers success. Keeping up to date with what is happening in the fast paced world of technology and engineering can seem like a full-time job in itself. Aimed at all stages this workshop will ensure you leave with an understanding of: • What commercials awareness is • Why employers value it • How to develop your own commercial awareness with a particular focus on engineering and technology • How to apply it in your applications and interviews. Understanding yourself and planning your future Wednesday 7th October 2020, 12:00 – 13:00 If you are not sure where to start when thinking about your career, the first step in making an effective career plan is understanding yourself and what you want from your career. This session will help you reflect on your skills, strengths, values and interests and how these might impact your future plans. By the end of the session you will have a clearer sense of what you want from your career and you will feel confident researching career options. All

Networking and making professional contacts

CVs, covering letters and applications Wednesday 21st October 2020, 12:00 – 13:00 This workshop will help you write winning CVs, covering letters and applications and learn to recognise the key factors in terms of both content and structure. This is a great opportunity to pick up some practical tips which will set your applications apart from others. By the end of the session you will be able to write an effective CV, covering letter and application. All

In today’s employment market, being able to network in a confident and effective way is important for building a personal brand and increasing employability. This session will explore the benefits of networking and developing strong professional relationships. You will learn what makes effective networking, both online and in person. By the end of the session, you will have increased your confidence in handling all types of networking scenarios.

In this session, you will learn how to prepare for interviews and answer competency, strengths-based and tricky questions. We will also look at the various activities that could take place at an assessment centre and what employers are looking for in each of them. The session will help you present yourself with confidence and minimise any anxiety about going to interviews and assessment centres for internships, placements, graduate jobs and graduate schemes.

Finding part-time work Wednesday 4th November 2020, 12:00 – 13:00 Earn while you learn and develop your skills by joining us to find out more about City’s Unitemps service and other ways to find part-time work on and off campus. We will also look at what makes an effective CV and covering letter for part-time work. By the end of the session, you will receive practical tips and resources which will support you in gaining part-time work during your studies. All

How to find an internship, placement or volunteering opportunity Wednesday 11th November 2020, 12:00 – 13:00 This session will help you understand the value of internships, placements and volunteering and will explore how to find and secure opportunities. You will learn about resources that can help you with your search, understand what the recruitment process might involve and discover how to make more effective applications. By the end of the session, you will receive tips and resources which will support you in gaining relevant professional experience.

International students: Working in the UK Wednesday 18th November 2020, 12:00 – 13:00 This session provides clarification on the options available for current students on a Tier 4 visa who wish to stay and work in the UK after completing their course. It will also provide an insight into what employers are looking for and highlight advice and support open to students. This session is run in conjunction with the International Advice team. All

Mock assessment centre Wednesday 25th November 2020, 13:00 – 15:00 Try out some of the practical exercises employers may use at assessment centres and receive constructive feedback from expert careers consultants and fellow students about your performance. These sessions will help you prepare both practically and mentally for an employer’s assessment centre. By the end of the session, you will feel more confident about taking part in employers’ assessment centres and understand their role in recruitment and selection. All

CAREERS FAIRS Fairs offer a unique opportunity for you to meet a vast range of organisations in just a couple of hours who offer graduate and postgraduate roles as well as first year, placement and internship opportunities. By attending one of our virtual Fairs, you will have the chance to meet representatives from a range of public and private sector organisations; including law firms, charities, barristers’ chambers, banks, tech, engineering firms and more, depending on the Fair you attend. You will also have the opportunity to hear from representatives about their responsibilities and their personal experiences.

Employability Skills Programme The Employability Skills Programme will prepare you for your transition from education to work, exploring all aspects of the selection and recruitment process. Artificial intelligence alumni networking event March 2021 This event will feature a talk on the topic of artificial intelligence for solving real-life industrial problems, followed by a networking reception. This evening will give you an excellent opportunity to connect with fellow alumni, students and academics, as well as learn about the latest news from your School and engage in an expert talk about artificial intelligence.

LGBT+ Increasing inclusion in the workplace February 2021, 18:00 – 20:00 This event, aimed at the LGBT+ community and allies at City, will discuss the experience of being LGBT+ in the workplace as well as workplace inclusivity. Hosted by the Students’ Union in collaboration with CityCareers, the event will offer an opportunity to network with leading professionals and take part in a Q&A session. All

International Women's Day: Successful women in the workplace March 2021 To mark International Women’s Day, the Students’ Union and CityCareers are hosting a panel with an exciting line up of highly successful women in a variety of sectors. The event aims to help women plan, progress and become more successful in their chosen careers. There will be an opportunity for you to participate in a Q&A forum and listen to a range of professionals share their thoughts on what success looks like to them, followed by networking. All

SME Placements and Internship Recruitment Fair March 2021 This Fair gives SMCSE undergraduate students seeking placements, internships or projects the opportunity to meet representatives of small-tomedium-sized enterprises (SMEs), including alumni start-ups with live vacancies. Students will have the opportunity to provide employers with their CVs and some employers will be offering students the opportunity to sit recruitment tests. UG1

Women in tech Spring 2021, 18:00 – 20:00 With industry professionals in attendance, the aim of this event is to provide you with a platform to ask professionals a range of questions and establish what professional life is like for women in the tech sector over networking and refreshments. Worldwide careers opportunities panel Spring 2021, 18:00 – 20:00 As part of International City Week, this panel will provide you with useful insights into the breadth of opportunities available globally to help broaden your scope when applying for jobs. The event will enable you to: • Network and connect with like-minded individuals and industry professionals • Appreciate why international experience is an incredible advantage for graduates in today's job market • Understand the benefits and challenges of pursuing an international career. Summer 2021 This all-inclusive programme is designed to give you a head start to create the future you want. As part of this scheme, you can expect: • Three specialised one-to-one career sessions with a dedicated careers consultant • A place on the exclusive GradVantage Academy where you can explore possible career options, discover where to find opportunities and learn how to sell yourself and succeed at interviews • The opportunity to gain an eightweek paid internship with a smallto-medium-sized enterprise (SME) through speed recruitment events exclusive to GradVantage students.
