These events aim to give you an insight into a range of career options and the skills you will need to successfully apply for work experience, summer placements, year-long placements, graduate and postgraduate jobs within the mathematics, computer science and engineering sectors. Help with your career Professional Liaison Unit (PLU) The School of Mathematics, Computer Science & Engineering strongly encourages all of its students to undertake valuable professional experience as part of their degree as it is an excellent way to get an insight in to the industry. The Professional Liaison Unit (PLU) works closely with students and employers to support internships and industrial placements, which usually take place during the penultimate year of study. There are numerous benefits to gaining professional experience, including: • Having a competitive edge when entering the graduate job market • Placements are paid • Placement students develop professional skills as well as industry-specific technical skills. Each year, the PLU advertise hundreds of placement and internship vacancies which students can access through InPlace. Each departmen is allocated a specialist Work Based Learning Advisor from the PLU to support their students.

Introduction to the UK technology sector

Monday 7th October 2019, 18:00 – 20:00

Find out what this industry really looks like in 2019/20. The event is suitable for any students with a curiosity about or interest in working in the technology sector in the UK. By the attending this workshop you will discover: • The scope and scale of the UK technology industry • What the current key technology sector trends are and the jobs attached to them • How to be competitive as a student job hunter in this ever-changing marketplace.

Students will work in three critical analysis groups where each individual will make decisions based on their analysis and we will then see what impacts their analysis have. We will cover the importance of communication during analysis, decision making and implementation. On a real work site these skills are extremely important but are normally neglected. UG2

The Civil Service Fast Stream: Preparing for recruitment tests Wednesday 9th October 2019, 18:00 – 19:30 Graduates from the Civil Service Fast Stream will give an introduction to the programme and their experience of it. They will talk you through the application process and provide advice on preparing for each stage, especially recruitment tests and where they use them during the recruitment process. By attending this event you will: • Understand what opportunities the Civil Service Fast Stream has • Have a clear understanding of what the application process looks like • Understand how to maximise your chances of success when it comes to tackling recruitment tests.

Computer Science speed networking Monday 14th October 2019, 14:00 – 17:00 Industry experts including City alumni will talk about their career journeys in financial technology, software development, web technologies and support and analyst roles. What an outstanding technology graduate looks like in 2019/2020 Thursday 17th October 2019, 12:00 – 13:00 It’s regularly reported that there is a major shortage of IT professionals in the UK compared to how many tech vacancies there are. Technology vacancies, including graduate opportunities go unfilled every year. Having a degree is just not enough. Attend this event and understand better: • The skill-set that makes a technology student or graduate really employable • The mentalities that make a technology student or graduate really employable • The opinions of real-life employers and recruiters. Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering speed networking

A career in foreign exchange Monday 21st October 2019, 18:00 – 20:00 This session introduces the foreign exchange (FX) industry, enabling you to gain an understanding of different FX transactions and the market participants involved. You will learn financial vocabulary relating to FX concepts that will be useful to understand prior to an interview. By attending the event you will: • Learn about FX transactions and its role in the financial markets • Gain an understanding of the roles available in the FX industry and the skills required to succeed • Understand commercial awareness and how to use it during interviews. Tech@City Placements & Internships Recruitment Fair Monday 21st October 2019, 14:00 – 16:30 This Fair is a placements and internship recruitment event with a focus on tech careers, programming, games development, tech support and a variety of technical opportunities. Some of the exhibiting employers will be carrying out informal interviews and running tech tests on the day. Electrical and Electronic Engineering speed networking Tuesday 22nd October 2019, 17:30 – 21:00 Experts from the electrical and electronic engineering industries will be represented at this event, with time allocated for you to network over refreshments. Writing application forms for technology graduate programmes Thursday 24th October 2019, 12:00 – 13:00 This interactive webinar is intended for students who are finding graduate programme application forms lengthy, overwhelming and time-consuming. By watching this webinar, you will discover: • How to answer the competency and motivational questions • The difference behind an employer rejecting you at online application stage and progressing you to the next stage in the process • Real-life examples from technology graduate program application forms. Developing a behavioural scoring model for customers and estimating the probability of default Thursday 24th October 2019, 18:00 – 20:00 This workshop is for any student interested in the application of mathematical modelling in financial institutions. We will explore the use of rating models across different areas of financial institutions and the different steps involved in the development of a behavioural scoring model, followed by a practical case study. Learning outcomes: • How to develop a behavioural scoring model • Assess the performance of a behavioural scoring model • Use the output of the behavioural scoring model to estimate the probability of default and how to calibrate the model. Mathematics speed networking Friday 25th October 2019, 17:30 – 21:00 Through networking with industry professionals at this event, you will be better able to make informed decisions about your career and understand how to submit stronger applications for jobs. Experts from sectors such as finance, banking and accountancy will be represented. Time is also allocated after the main event for students to network over refreshments. A career in corporate B2B sales Monday 28th October 2019, 18:00 – 20:00 Led by Carl Latham, Head of Account Management at GlobalData, this session will cover the skills and attitudes needed to succeed, as well as progression and financial rewards. Carl will cover what employers are looking for, tips for highlighting key points on your CV as well as interview advice. He will also discuss how public speaking has helped advance his career. ALL

Pivotal software Industry Insight Tuesday 29th October 2019, 08:45 – 12:30 With offices around the world, Pivotal is a software development company working across industries including automotive, financial services, industrial, media, retail, government, technology and telecommunications. Pivotal is looking for ten City students to join them for this Industry Insight, which will be open to all SMCSE and Cass final year and postgraduate students. Pivotal is deeply committed to hiring people with diverse experiences, perspectives and backgrounds. UG3

Mastering the application process for your dream role in mathematics Thursday 7th November 2019, 12:00 – 13:00 This session will focus on the application processes involved in securing your dream graduate job in mathematics. The session will be attended by an employer from a top firm, an alumnus of City and your dedicated maths careers consultant. By the end of the session you will be able to write an effective application. UG3

Engineering and Technology Fair by EqualEngineers Wednesday 30 October 2019, 12:00 – 16:00 th

EqualEngineers connects inclusive employers with diverse talent in engineering and technology. EqualEngineers want to increase social mobility by specifically targeting female, ethnic minority, LGBT+, disabled engineers and other underrepresented groups in the profession. At this Fair you can find out about apprenticeships, placements, internships, graduate and returnship opportunities from engineering and technology employers. UG2 UG3

Thursday 31st October 2019, 12:00 – 13:00 Technical interviews can form a core part of the technology industry recruitment process. It is not always clear what happens in them and how you should handle them. This workshop addresses these questions head on. Attend this event and understand better: • Different formats of technical interview • Example questions and how to tackle them • W hat employers and recruiters are really looking for in their questions. Thursday 21st November 2019, 18:00 – 20:00 Final year students and recent graduates from selected courses are invited to take part in a speed recruitment session with employers who have live opportunities. The speed recruitment events provide you with the great opportunity to: • Network with employers to hear more about their opportunities • Potentially be shortlisted by employers and launch your graduate job hunt • Get familiarised with the various roles that are available within organisations. CAREERS FAIRS Fairs offer a unique opportunity for you to meet a vast range of organisations in just a couple of hours who offer graduate and postgraduate roles as well as first year, placement and internship opportunities. By attending, you will have the chance to network with representatives from a range of public and private sector organisations; including law firms, charities, barristers’ chambers, banks, tech and engineering firms and more, depending on the Fair you attend. You will also have the opportunity to hear from representatives about their responsibilities and personal experiences.

Accessibility hour The first hour (14:00 – 15:00) of the Fairs will be designated as an Accessibility Hour, allowing students who have access needs and requirements advance access to the employers available, in order to have uninterrupted and meaningful conversations about the roles on offer.

A select group of organisations will deliver break-out sessions during each of the Fairs, aiming to enhance your careerreadiness, confidence and motivation to succeed in your career search.
