We are delighted to present our programme of employability events for the School of Arts & Social Sciences 2020/21, designed in collaboration with the School. These events aim to give you an insight into a range of career options and the skills you will need to successfully apply for work experience, summer placements, year-long placements, graduate and postgraduate jobs within the arts and social science sectors. You will have numerous opportunities to hear from and network with a range of professionals, employers and alumni from the School. This guide will help you identify what you want from a future career, choose a sector or role that interests you and help you to build a plan to explore and achieve your career goals and maximise your student experience at City. No matter what stage of your career planning, these events can help you:

Meet your careers consultants

Introducing your SASS Placements and Exchanges team: Eleanor Hannan, Fiona Gibson and Taylor Wong.

All City students and recent graduates can book an appointment with one of our careers consultants.

The SASS Placements and Exchanges team provide advice and guidance on placements, including sandwich years and the Erasmus+ Traineeship programme, as well as exchanges and study abroad opportunities.

We have two careers consultants who work specifically with the School of Arts & Social Science students – Antonia Clark and Estanis Bouza. They offer three main types of one-to-one appointment to suit different requirements: quick query appointments, career guidance appointments and mock interview appointments.

The benefits of placement and exchange participation include: • Enhancing your market value, skills and competencies • Increasing your confidence, knowledge and professionalism • Developing valuable networks • Improving your graduate prospects • E xperiencing different working environments and academic perspectives and discovering new methods of teaching and learning • Immersing yourself in other cultures – socially, academically and professionally. You can also find detailed information about the sandwich year work placement route as well as the studying abroad route on Moodle (SASS Integrated Professional Training Programme). Information sessions for exchange and placements are held every Wednesday at 15:30 during term time.

Events Programme 2020/21 Term one events will all be delivered online. Term two events may also be delivered online, but we will keep you informed via careershub.city.ac.uk/students once they are confirmed. Racial and social inequalities in the times of COVID-19 – taking conversations forward by the BPS Wednesday 23rd September 2020, 14:45 – 17:00 Every person has been impacted by the pandemic, but there is an inequity in the impact it has had on individuals and groups of people. The lost lives are situated within a social context in which simply asserting that ‘Black Lives Matter’ is a radical statement challenging institutional and structural racism. It is therefore important that recovery and transformation plans tackle the injustices that have led to Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic groups being disproportionately affected by COVID-19. This event is a conversation that will shape and inform the Division of Clinical Psychology’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and Antiracism work going forward. Introduction to investment banking Monday 5th October 2020, 18:00 – 20:00 This event will give you direct access to employer representatives from an investment bank so you can learn more about their career journey so far, the challenges they have faced and how they overcame them. You will also find out what key measures they have taken to achieve success as well as how you can achieve success in your applications to investment banks. E

Building a career in advertising by Xaxis Wednesday 7th October 2020, 10:00 – 16:00 Xaxis combine unique brand-safe media access, unrivalled programmatic expertise and 360-degree data with proprietary artificial intelligence to help global brands achieve the outcomes they value from their digital media investments. Xaxis offers managed programmatic services in 47 markets. This event will give you an introduction to the exciting world of media and advertising as well as a hands-on immersive look into life at a large media company. Top employers virtual event by RateMyPlacement Wednesday 14th October 2020, 9:30 – 16:00 RateMyPlacement’s top undergraduate employers virtual event is a chance to meet and interact with the UK’s very best companies. The event will include one-to-one sessions with employers, presentations, access to exclusive downloadable content as well as competitions and giveaways. Topics may include: • Personal branding workshop • W hat are employers really looking for in applications and during assessment centres? • How companies are responding to COVID-19? • The differences between virtual and face-to-face insight schemes • A look into company culture. Careers in foreign exchange Thursday 15 October 2020, 18:00 – 19:30 th

This session aims to introduce the foreign exchange (FX) industry enabling attendees to gain an understanding of different FX transactions and the market participants involved. You will also learn financial vocabulary relating to FX concepts that will be useful to understand prior to an interview. By attending the event you will: • Learn about FX transactions and their role in the financial markets • Enhance your financial vocabulary • Gain an understanding of the roles available in the foreign exchange industry and the skills required to succeed • Understand commercial awareness and how to use it during interviews. Mock assessment centre training: How to excel at a virtual assessment Thursday 22 October 2020, 14:00 – 15:30

Developing a behavioural scoring model for customers and estimating the probability of default Thursday 22nd October 2020, 14:00 – 16:00 This workshop is for any student interested in the application of mathematical modelling in financial institutions. We will first explore the use of rating models across different areas of financial institutions and the different steps involved in the development of a behavioural scoring model. This will be followed by a practical case study on how to assess the performance of this model and perform a calibration to calculate the probability of default. Learning outcomes include: • How to develop a behavioural scoring model and its uses across financial institutions • Assess the performance of a behavioural scoring model • Use the output of the behavioural scoring model to estimate the probability of default and how to calibrate the model. City Year UK are highly experienced in assessment centres. Through the delivery of around 30 assessment centres annually, the City Year UK recruitment team have perfected the way in which we choose quality volunteers. We are committed to developing young people to reach their full potential and be prepared for their career. Our assessment centres test academic skills, character, emotional intelligence and communication skills and have been quality tested against other assessment centres of leading youth employers. The aims of this session include: • Understanding what your behaviour at an assessment centre says about you and how different sectors prefer some character traits over others • Understanding the different question types that can be asked and how to answer them • How to prepare for both physical and virtual assessment centres. Career immersion evenings Throughout October 2020 Spend a unique evening with organisations like NatWest Markets, KPMG, BT, Siemens, the Home Office, Ministry of Defence, Teacher Stern Solicitors, London Metropolitan Police and a body of medical experts for an in-depth career immersion covering what it’s really like working in these sectors. The event will also cover opportunities that exist within the industries, what a successful application looks like, mock interviews, CV critiquing, group exercises and more. Back by popular demand, the event will give you the opportunity to undertake twohour rotations with sectors of your choice, while still enjoying the benefit of all the stalls to have more personal conversations. The event is ideal for students who feel they need some extra support and guidance when it comes to making an informed career choice. ALL

PANEL EVENTS Our panel events are a fantastic opportunity to explore and discover the range of sectors, industries and opportunities available to you; from investment banking to engineering, government and international relations to creative industries. You will have the opportunity to ask questions to a range of industry professionals and experts who will share their own career stories, top-tips and industry news. Employability Skills Programme The Employability Skills Programme will prepare you for your transition from education to work, exploring all aspects of the selection and recruitment process. Understanding yourself and planning your future Wednesday 7th October 2020, 12:00 – 13:00 If you are not sure where to start when thinking about your career, the first step in making an effective career plan is understanding yourself and what you want from your career. This session will help you reflect on your skills, strengths, values and interests and how these might impact your future plans. By the end of the session you will have a clearer sense of what you want from your career and you will feel confident researching career options. All

CVs, covering letters and applications Wednesday 21st October 2020, 12:00 – 13:00 This workshop will help you write winning CVs, covering letters and applications and learn to recognise the key factors in terms of both content and structure. This is a great opportunity to pick up some practical tips which will set your applications apart from others. By the end of the session you will be able to write an effective CV, covering letter and application. All

In today’s employment market, being able to network in a confident and effective way is important for building a personal brand and increasing employability. This session will explore the benefits of networking and developing strong professional relationships. You will learn what makes effective networking, both online and in person. By the end of the session, you will have increased your confidence in handling all types of networking scenarios.

In this session, you will learn how to prepare for interviews and answer competency, strengths-based and tricky questions. We will also look at the various activities that could take place at an assessment centre and what employers are looking for in each of them. The session will help you present yourself with confidence and minimise any anxiety about going to interviews and assessment centres for internships, placements, graduate jobs and graduate schemes.

Finding part-time work Wednesday 4th November 2020, 12:00 – 13:00 Earn while you learn and develop your skills by joining us to find out more about City’s Unitemps service and other ways to find part-time work on and off campus. We will also look at what makes an effective CV and covering letter for part-time work. By the end of the session, you will receive practical tips and resources which will support you in gaining part-time work during your studies. All

How to find an internship, placement or volunteering opportunity Wednesday 11th November 2020, 12:00 – 13:00 This session will help you understand the value of internships, placements and volunteering and will explore how to find and secure opportunities. You will learn about resources that can help you with your search, understand what the recruitment process might involve and discover how to make more effective applications. By the end of the session, you will receive tips and resources which will support you in gaining relevant professional experience.

International students: Working in the UK Wednesday 18th November 2020, 12:00 – 13:00 This session provides clarification on the options available for current students on a Tier 4 visa who wish to stay and work in the UK after completing their course. It will also provide an insight into what employers are looking for and highlight advice and support open to students. This session is run in conjunction with the International Advice team. All

Mock assessment centre Wednesday 25th November 2020, 13:00 – 15:00 Try out some of the practical exercises employers may use at assessment centres and receive constructive feedback from expert careers consultants and fellow students about your performance. These sessions will help you prepare both practically and mentally for an employer’s assessment centre. By the end of the session, you will feel more confident about taking part in employers’ assessment centres and understand their role in recruitment and selection. All

Assessment centres are often used to select candidates for internships, placements, graduate schemes and jobs. Find out what activities take place at an assessment centre and what the assessors are looking for so you can compete effectively. Raise your awareness of the most common psychometric tests and how you can practise them.

Succeed at interviews Wednesday 18th November 2020, 15:00 – 16:00 Interviews are often the first opportunity that you get to sit down and talk to your potential employer face-to-face. Learn how to stand out and have an impact on your interviewers during face-to-face or video interviews. We will discuss tips on how to answer competency, strengths-based and tricky interview questions.

Career planning Wednesday 25th November 2020, 15:00 – 16:00 It is normal not to have a clear idea of what you want to do in the future. This webinar will explore a typical career decision making cycle or in other words, how people tend to plan their careers. You will get tips on activities you can plan to make the most of the stage you are at and engage with the next stage successfully.

How to decide on postgraduate study Wednesday 2nd December 2020, 15:00 – 16:00 Many students plan to study for a master’s degree or undertake other forms of postgraduate study after their degree. However, you should assess how much value this will add to your employability at this point in time. This webinar will cover how to research potential courses and how to explore potential sources of funding.

CAREERS FAIRS Fairs offer a unique opportunity for you to meet a vast range of organisations in just a couple of hours who offer graduate and postgraduate roles as well as first year, placement and internship opportunities. By attending one of our virtual Fairs, you will have the chance to meet representatives from a range of public and private sector organisations; including law firms, charities, barristers’ chambers, banks, tech, engineering firms and more, depending on the Fair you attend. You will also have the opportunity to hear from representatives about their responsibilities and their personal experiences.

Surviving or thriving: Mental health awareness in the workplace May 2021 In this panel you will hear from professionals across various sectors discussing how you can thrive in your professional life and maintain mental health wellbeing. The aim of the event is to raise awareness on mental health in the workplace and discuss what wellbeing is in a practical sense.

LGBT+ Increasing inclusion in the workplace February 2021, 18:00 – 20:00 This event, aimed at the LGBT+ community and allies at City, will discuss the experience of being LGBT+ in the workplace as well as workplace inclusivity. Hosted by the Students’ Union in collaboration with CityCareers, the event will offer an opportunity to network with leading professionals and take part in a Q&A session. All

International Women’s Day: Successful women in the workplace March 2021 To mark International Women’s Day, the Students’ Union and CityCareers are hosting a panel with an exciting line up of highly successful women in a variety of sectors. The event aims to help women plan, progress and become more successful in their chosen careers. There will be an opportunity for you to participate in a Q&A forum and listen to a range of professionals share their thoughts on what success looks like to them, followed by networking. All

Lawyers vs. journalists: The challenges around media law regulation Spring 2021, 18:00 – 20:00 In this event you will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session with a solicitor, barrister and journalist discussing the challenges they face in their professional lives with regards to the legal regulation of the media. By attending you will: • Discover the importance of having knowledge of media law when working as a journalist • Get top tips on how to apply as a solicitor in media law • Network with alumni who have all moved on to a successful professional role. This all-inclusive programme is designed to give you a head start to create the future you want. As part of this scheme, you can expect: • Three specialised one-to-one career sessions with a dedicated careers consultant • A place on the exclusive GradVantage Academy where you can explore possible career options, discover where to find opportunities and learn how to sell yourself and succeed at interviews • The opportunity to gain an eight-week paid internship with small-to-medium-sized enterprise (SME) through speed recruitment events exclusive to GradVantage students. Students will receive an invitation to take part in the programme.

As part of International City Week, this panel will provide you with useful insights into the breadth of opportunities available globally to help broaden your scope when applying for jobs. Investing in yourself: Breaking down common barriers and maximising career yields Spring 2021 The aim of this session is to give students who have an interest in financial services direct access to highly successful Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) industry professionals who have been through the higher education process and have overcome the typical barriers faced by BAME individuals. The session aims to: • Enable students to hear about common barriers and how to overcome them • Listen to the success stories of industry professionals • Demystify financial services and roles within finance • Support application processes with practical hints and tips from industry professionals. Although this session is aimed at BAME students, anyone can participate. ALL
