Meet your careers consultants

Introducing your SASS Placements and Exchanges team: Eleanor Hannan, Fiona Gibson and Taylor Wong.

All City students and recent graduates can book an appointment with one of our career consultants.

The SASS Placements and Exchanges team provide advice and guidance on placements, including sandwich years and the Erasmus+ Traineeship programme, as well as exchanges and study abroad opportunities.

We have two careers consultants who work specifically with the School of Arts & Social Science students – Antonia Clark and Estanis Bouza. They offer three main types of one-to-one appointment to suit different requirements: quick query appointments, career guidance appointments and mock interview appointments.

The benefits of placement and exchange participation include: • Enhancing your market value, skills and competencies • Increasing your confidence, knowledge and professionalism • Developing valuable networks • Improving your graduate prospects • E xperiencing different working environments and academic perspectives and discovering new methods of teaching and learning • Immersing yourself in other cultures – socially, academically and professionally. You can also find detailed information about the sandwich year work placement route as well as the studying abroad route on Moodle (SASS Integrated Professional Training Programme). Opportunities in investment banking round table Thursday 3rd October 2019, 18:00 – 20:00 The aim of this session is to help you understand the range of options that are available to you upon graduating and help you make an informed career choice when you start exploring your options. Industry professionals from top organisations will cover: • How they got to where they are today and a typical day in their role • Soft skills, academic qualifications and work experience that students need in order to secure a placement or graduate position • Top tips for applications, interviews and assessment centres. The Civil Service Fast Stream: Preparing for recruitment tests Wednesday 9th October 2019, 18:00 – 19:30 Graduates from the Civil Service Fast Stream will give an introduction to the programme and their experience of it. They will talk you through the application process and provide advice on preparing for each stage, especially the recruitment tests and where they use them during the recruitment process. By attending this event you will: • Understand what opportunities the Civil Service Fast Stream has • Have a clear understanding of what the application process looks like • Understand how to maximise your chances of success when it comes to tackling recruitment tests. What is PR and is it a career for me? Tuesday 15th October 2019, 10:00 – 11:00 This session will highlight some of the main responsibilities of a PR professional – showcasing the diversity of a career in PR and how skills can be transferred to a PR career. A career in PR can be rich and varied, encompassing all industries and sectors. It includes liaising with companies directly and helping inform, engage and debate on key issues, and set the agenda. How to build a career in media and advertising with Xaxis Thursday 17th October 2019, 10:00 – 12:00 This event will be a practical and interactive workshop on building a career in the media and advertising industry, delivered by experienced media professionals. During the workshop participants will: • Understand the different roles and career paths into the creative advertising industry • Gain insight into the day-to-day lives of different advertising specialisms and roles • Learn practical skills to help with applications, interviews and negotiating job offers. A career in foreign exchange Monday 21st October 2019, 18:00 – 20:00 This session provides an introduction to the foreign exchange (FX) industry, enabling attendees to gain an understanding of different FX transactions and the market participants involved. You will learn financial vocabulary relating to FX concepts that will be useful to understand prior to an interview. By attending the event you will: • Learn about FX transactions and its role in the financial markets • Gain an understanding of the roles available in the FX industry and the skills required to succeed • Understand commercial awareness and how to use it during interviews. Public sector assessment centre skills with Think Ahead Wednesday 23rd October 2019, 14:00 – 15:00 At Think Ahead, we want to see a society where everyone with mental health problems can flourish. To drive change we created one of the UK’s most competitive graduate schemes to offer remarkable graduates a route into mental health social work. We will use our experience of the assessment process to show you: • How to identify what attributes are tested in common assessment centre activities • Best practice as well as hints and tips • Common mistakes candidates make in assessment centres. Sandwich year on a work placement information session Wednesday 23rd October 2019, 15:00 – 18:00 This is a great event aimed mainly at first year and penultimate year students looking to undertake a sandwich year. During this event you will have an opportunity to: • Learn about the Sandwich Year Integrated Professional Training Programme • Hear first-hand experience from students who successfully participated in Integrated Professional Training Programmes and ask them questions • Discuss the benefits of participating and find out how to apply. Developing a behavioural scoring model for customers and estimating the probability of default Thursday 24th October 2019, 18:00 – 20:00 This workshop is for any student interested in the application of mathematical modelling in financial institutions. We will explore the use of rating models across different areas of financial institutions and the different steps involved in the development of a behavioural scoring model, followed by a practical case study. Learning outcomes: • How to develop a behavioural scoring model • Assess the performance of a behavioural scoring model • Use the output of the behavioural scoring model to estimate the probability of default and how to calibrate the model. ICAEW business challenge

Thursday 31st October 2019, 18:00 – 20:00 The ICAEW business game is designed to give students an insight into the role of an ICAEW Chartered Accountant as well as helping you develop key employability skills such as decision making, problem solving and professionalism. A typical business challenge will involve in-depth analysis of an organisation followed by exercises to recommend and advise on future business strategies. The session will also give an insight into the tasks you’ll be set during your ACA training agreement.

Meet and greet with Travers Smith LLP Thursday 7th November 2019, 18:30 – 21:00 Travers Smith are looking for law and nonlaw students who are interested in becoming solicitors in the future to join them at their offices for a short presentation about the firm. By attending this event you will: • Learn more about the application process for both training contracts and vacation schemes • Network with partners and trainees over drinks and canapes • Discover why Travers Smith have one of the highest staff retention rates in the City. This is a great opportunity to pick up some practical tips which will set your application apart from the others. Interviews and assessment centres Wednesday 6th November 2019, 12:00 – 13:00 In this session, you will learn how to prepare for interviews and how to answer competency, strengths-based and tricky questions. We will also look at the various activities that could take place at an assessment centre and what employers are looking for in each of them. This session will explore the benefits of networking and developing strong professional relationships. International students: Working in the UK Thursday 7th November 2019, 13:00 – 15:00 This session, run in conjunction with the International Advice team, is for current students on a Tier 4 visa who wish to stay and work in the UK after their course. It will provide an insight into the options for working in the UK for international graduates, what employers are looking for and highlight advice and support open to students. All

Mock assessment centre Wednesday 20th November 2019, 13:00 – 16:00 Try out some of the practical exercises which employers use at assessment centres and receive feedback about your performance. This session will help you prepare both practically and mentally for an employer’s assessment centre. You will feel more confident about taking part in assessment centres and understand their role in recruitment and selection. All

CAREERS FAIRS Fairs offer a unique opportunity for you to meet a vast range of organisations in just a couple of hours who offer graduate and postgraduate roles as well as first year, placement and internship opportunities. By attending, you will have the chance to network with representatives from a range of public and private sector organisations; including law firms, charities, barristers’ chambers, banks, tech and engineering firms and more, depending on the Fair you attend. You will also have the opportunity to hear from representatives about their responsibilities and personal experiences.

Accessibility hour The first hour (14:00 – 15:00) of the Fairs will be designated as an Accessibility Hour, allowing students who have access needs and requirements advance access to the employers available, in order to have uninterrupted and meaningful conversations about the roles on offer.
