We are delighted to present our programme of employability events for The City Law School 2020/21, designed in collaboration with the School. These events aim to give you an insight into a range of career options and the skills you will need to successfully apply for work experience, pupillages, training contracts, graduate and postgraduate jobs within the law sector. You will have numerous opportunities to hear from and network with a range of professionals, employers and alumni from the School. This guide will help you identify what you want from a future career, choose a sector or role that interests you and help you to explore and achieve your career goals and maximise your student experience at City. No matter what stage of your career planning, these events can help you:

Pupillage Advice Service (PAS)
Meet your careers consultants
The Pupillage Advice Service offers pupillage advice appointments and mock interviews of 45 minutes.
The careers consultants deliver specific careers workshops throughout the year for all Law students as well as offering career advice and CV and application checking for both legal and non-legal opportunities. These can be booked online via CareersHub.
All of the PAS advisers are or were practising barristers who have been or are involved in the selection of pupils. They have had the benefit of seeing large numbers of application forms from students and which of those have generated interviews. Appointments are allocated on a firstcome, first-served basis. Do not wait until you are invited for an interview to book an appointment.

There is also an option open to second year LLB students to do an elective which will support moving forward in their career. For postgraduate students there are additional appointments available during term time on Tuesday afternoons to provide support with career planning, applications, CVs, cover letters and mock interview practice. Marlon Gray and Reza Majid offer support on postgraduate and professional courses, as well as for undergraduate LLB and Graduate Entry LLB students.

BVS CV drop-in clinics Tuesday 6th October 2020, 13:00 – 16:00 Tuesday 13th October 2020, 17:00 – 20:00 This is a great opportunity for you to pick up practical tips as well as review the content and structure of your CV. These 15 – 20 minute appointments will focus on the following in relation to your CV: • Suitable format and effectively describing your skills • How to tailor your CV for different job opportunities • The quirks of a legal CV. Pupillage meet and greet with South Square Thursday 15th October 2020, 18:00 – 19:00 South Square are offering students an opportunity to meet members of the Commercial Chancery Bar. This event will be attended by South Square’s Head of Chambers, a number of silks, senior juniors and all junior members under ten years’ call. A junior barrister will give a short presentation about pupillage at South Square, followed by an informal reception which will provide you with an opportunity to socialise and ask further questions. BARBRI is the world’s leading private legal education provider and prepares both US and international lawyers and law graduates to pass a US bar exam. BARBRI’s Extended Bar Prep programme is offered as either a six-month or a ten-month curriculum and affords international lawyers and law graduates the opportunity to study for a US bar exam while working. You will learn about the benefits of becoming a dual qualified lawyer and about the bar review courses BARBRI supply. You will also learn about the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), which allows students with any undergraduate degree to become a qualified solicitor in England and Wales. LLB

Virtual Diversity Law Fair series
Monday 26th October – Friday 30th October The Virtual Law Fair 2020, hosted by allaboutlaw. co.uk, is the UK’s biggest Law Fair. Book a slot to speak to the firms you want to work for and check out thousands of training contracts and vacation schemes from top firms and law schools all in one place. You can use the app to research in advance as well as join live workshops and presentations from law firms on the day.
Throughout October and November 2020 Aspiring Solicitors will deliver the first ever Virtual Diversity Law Fair, giving diverse candidates from around the UK the opportunity to speak to 20 to 30 of the UK’s leading law firms who are committed to increasing diversity in the legal profession. The Virtual Diversity Law Fair series will be attended by lawyers, graduate recruitment teams, in-house legal teams and trainees. Each event will be coordinated in a way that ensures a controlled flow of attendees to law firms, to maximise the quality of the experience for all participants.

Career immersion evenings Throughout October 2020 Spend a unique evening with organisations like NatWest Markets, KPMG, BT, Siemens, the Home Office, Ministry of Defence, Teacher Stern Solicitors, London Metropolitan Police and a body of medical experts for an in-depth career immersion covering what it’s really like working in these sectors. The event will also cover opportunities that exist within the industries, what a successful application looks like, mock interviews, CV critiquing, group exercises and more. Back by popular demand, the event will give you the opportunity to undertake two-hour rotations with sectors of your choice, while still enjoying the benefit of all the stalls to have more personal conversations. The event is ideal for students who feel they need some extra support and guidance when it comes to making an informed career choice.

The Legal Cheek UK Virtual Law Fair series Throughout autumn 2020, 13:50 – 17:00 Drawing on Legal Cheek‘s unparalleled law student subscriber and follower base, as well its extensive campus ambassador network, the Fairs give students from all parts of the UK the opportunity to meet the nation’s leading law firms from their laptops. Students based overseas who intend to qualify as solicitors and are eligible to work in the UK are also encouraged to attend. ALL

Understanding yourself and planning your future Wednesday 7th October 2020, 12:00 – 13:00 If you are not sure where to start when thinking about your career, the first step in making an effective career plan is understanding yourself and what you want from your career. This session will help you reflect on your skills, strengths, values and interests and how these might impact your future plans. By the end of the session you will have a clearer sense of what you want from your career and you will feel confident researching career options. All

CVs, covering letters and applications Wednesday 21st October 2020, 12:00 – 13:00 This workshop will help you write winning CVs, covering letters and applications and learn to recognise the key factors in terms of both content and structure. This is a great opportunity to pick up some practical tips which will set your applications apart from others. By the end of the session you will be able to write an effective CV, covering letter and application. All

In today’s employment market, being able to network in a confident and effective way is important for building a personal brand and increasing employability. This session will explore the benefits of networking and developing strong professional relationships. You will learn what makes effective networking, both online and in person. By the end of the session, you will have increased your confidence in handling all types of networking scenarios.
In this session, you will learn how to prepare for interviews and answer competency, strengths-based and tricky questions. We will also look at the various activities that could take place at an assessment centre and what employers are looking for in each of them. The session will help you present yourself with confidence and minimise any anxiety about going to interviews and assessment centres for internships, placements, graduate jobs and graduate schemes.

Finding part-time work Wednesday 4th November 2020, 12:00 – 13:00 Earn while you learn and develop your skills by joining us to find out more about City’s Unitemps service and other ways to find part-time work on and off campus. We will also look at what makes an effective CV and covering letter for part-time work. By the end of the session, you will receive practical tips and resources which will support you in gaining part-time work during your studies. All
How to find an internship, placement or volunteering opportunity Wednesday 11th November 2020, 12:00 – 13:00 This session will help you understand the value of internships, placements and volunteering and will explore how to find and secure opportunities. You will learn about resources that can help you with your search, understand what the recruitment process might involve and discover how to make more effective applications. By the end of the session, you will receive tips and resources which will support you in gaining relevant professional experience.
International students: Working in the UK Wednesday 18th November 2020, 12:00 – 13:00 This session provides clarification on the options available for current students on a Tier 4 visa who wish to stay and work in the UK after completing their course. It will also provide an insight into what employers are looking for and highlight advice and support open to students. This session is run in conjunction with the International Advice team. All
Mock assessment centre Wednesday 25th November 2020, 13:00 – 15:00 Try out some of the practical exercises employers may use at assessment centres and receive constructive feedback from expert careers consultants and fellow students about your performance. These sessions will help you prepare both practically and mentally for an employer’s assessment centre. By the end of the session, you will feel more confident about taking part in employers’ assessment centres and understand their role in recruitment and selection. All

CAREERS FAIRS Fairs offer a unique opportunity for you to meet a vast range of organisations in just a couple of hours who offer graduate and postgraduate roles as well as first year, placement and internship opportunities. By attending one of our virtual Fairs, you will have the chance to meet representatives from a range of public and private sector organisations; including law firms, charities, barristers’ chambers, banks, tech, engineering firms and more, depending on the Fair you attend. You will also have the opportunity to hear from representatives about their responsibilities and their personal experiences.

LGBT+ Increasing inclusion in the workplace February 2021, 18:00 – 20:00 This event, aimed at the LGBT+ community and allies at City, will discuss the experience of being LGBT+ in the workplace as well as workplace inclusivity. Hosted by the Students’ Union in collaboration with CityCareers, the event will offer an opportunity to network with leading professionals and take part in a Q&A session. ALL

International Women’s Day: Successful women in the workplace March 2021 To mark International Women’s Day, the Students’ Union and CityCareers are hosting a panel with an exciting line up of highly successful women in a variety of sectors. Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) information session Spring 2021 This session will review the routes to qualification, with a particular focus on the solicitor and barrister routes. It will be an opportunity to discuss the next steps following completion of your undergraduate studies and consider how regulators are looking to change how qualification is attained. Key areas will include: • Qualifying as a solicitor • Qualifying as a barrister • The changes currently under review by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and the Bar Standards Board (BSB). Alternatives to pupillage Spring/summer 2021 This session is for students on the BVS pathway who are looking to progress along the barrister route. It considers ways in which you can make yourself more attractive to chambers and legal employers. The session will then go on to examine other non-barrister pathways in the legal sector. BVS
Career alternatives to solicitor and pre-training contract: Ways to enhance your profile Spring/summer 2021 The journey to securing the training contract stage can be a long one. This session will explore potential ways to enhance your professional profile in between successfully reaching the training contract stage and considering alternative opportunities. LPC
Investing in yourself: Breaking down common barriers and maximising career yields Spring 2021 The aim of this session is to give students who have an interest in financial services direct access to highly successful Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) industry professionals who have been through the higher education process and have overcome the typical barriers faced by BAME individuals. The session aims to: • Enable students to hear about common barriers and how to overcome them • Listen to the success stories of industry professionals • Demystify financial services and roles within finance • Support application processes with practical hints and tips from industry professionals. Although this session is aimed at BAME students, anyone can participate. ALL
GradVantage Summer 2021 This all-inclusive programme is designed to give you a head start to create the future you want. As part of this scheme, you can expect: • Three specialised one-to-one career sessions with a dedicated careers consultant • A place on the exclusive GradVantage Academy where you can explore possible career options, discover where to find opportunities and learn how to sell yourself and succeed at interviews • The opportunity to gain an eight week paid internship with a smallto-medium-sized enterprise (SME) through speed recruitment events exclusive to GradVantage students.
