We are the market leader for restructuring and insolvency and widely recognised for our work in banking and finance litigation. Members also specialise in commercial litigation, company law and civil fraud related disputes. South Square’s work has a significant international focus and members regularly appear in the courts and tribunals of international jurisdictions, notably the Cayman Islands, British Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Dubai, Hong Kong and Singapore. Each year Chambers looks to recruit up to three high calibre pupils with a strong academic record and the potential to become outstanding commercial barristers. Pupils are selected from a broad range of backgrounds and experience, whether recent university graduates or those seeking a second career at the Bar. Pupils are welcomed into all areas of Chambers’ life and are provided with a structured programme designed to train and equip them for a successful practice in a dynamic and challenging environment. Pupils sit with a number of supervisors for periods of six to eight weeks to experience a range of practices and work. Pupillage is not run as a competition between pupils and Chambers’ approach is to recruit all pupils, who meet the required standard, as tenants. Help with your career Pupillage Advice Service (PAS) The Pupillage Advice Service offers pupillage advice appointments and mock interviews of 45 minutes at the Grayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Inn campus. All of the PAS advisers are or were practising barristers who have been or are involved in the selection of pupils. They have had the benefit of seeing large numbers of application forms from students and which of those have generated interviews. Appointments are allocated on a first-come, firstserved basis. Do not wait until you are invited for an interview to book an appointment.

The Civil Service Fast Stream: Preparing for recruitment tests Wednesday 9th October 2019, 18:00 – 19:30 Graduates from the Civil Service Fast Stream will give an introduction to the programme and their experience of it. They will talk you through the application process and provide advice on preparing for each stage, especially the recruitment tests and where they use them during the recruitment process. Explore options with a law degree panel Thursday 17th October 2019, 18:00 – 20:00 By studying law, you have developed a range of transferable skills highly valued by employers. In this panel, you will have the opportunity to listen to high profile employers who studied law and have either pursued a career in the legal sector or chose a very different career path. Demystifying commercial awareness with Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner (BCLP) LLP Wednesday 16th October 2019, 16:00 – 17:00 This interactive session will be hosted by Michael Anderson, an M&A partner at BCLP with over 25 years’ experience working on M&A and investment transactions across various sectors. In this workshop, Michael will talk through a number of real-life transactions which will be used as case studies to understand what is meant by commercial awareness. Michael will focus on how to demonstrate commercial acumen during the recruitment process and the importance of continuing to do so throughout your career as a trainee and beyond. ALL

Pupillage meet and greet with South Square Thursday 17th October 2019, 18:00 – 20:00 South Square are offering students an opportunity to meet members of the commercial chancery Bar. This event will be attended by South Square’s Head of Chambers, a number of silks, senior juniors and all junior members under ten years’ call. A junior barrister will give a short presentation about pupillage at South Square, followed by an informal reception which will provide you with an opportunity to socialise and ask further questions. This event is delivered by talent development organisation Aspiring Solicitors. They will be going through the ‘dos and don’ts’ of completing law firm application forms and offering hints and tips on submitting successful applications. Qualifying as a US attorney with BARBRI Thursday 24th October 2019, 13:00 – 14:00 If you are studying or practicing law you may be eligible to sit for a US Bar Exam and become a US attorney. ICAEW business challenge Thursday 31st October 2019, 18:00 – 20:00 The ICAEW business game is designed to give students an insight into the role of an ICAEW Chartered Accountant as well as helping you develop key employability skills such as decision making, problem solving and professionalism. A typical business challenge will involve in-depth analysis of an organisation followed by exercises to recommend and advise on future business strategies. The session will also give an insight into the types of tasks you’ll be set during your ACA training agreement. LLB

This session is an interactive workshop based around an M&A case study. The session, led by a senior associate lawyer, aims to consider legal and commercial issues that might be relevant to a client, debate these and possible solutions around the table and then present on them to the rest of the room. There will be feedback and guidance given throughout the evening by the session leader and each facilitator. The firm intends to offer short work placements to students who impress on the day. LLB

Careers Fairs

Fairs offer a unique opportunity for you to meet a vast range of organisations in just a couple of hours who offer graduate and postgraduate roles as well as first year, placement and internship opportunities. By attending, you will have the chance to network with representatives from a range of public and private sector organisations; including law firms, charities, barristers’ chambers, banks, tech and engineering firms and more, depending on the Fair you attend. You will also have the opportunity to hear from representatives about their responsibilities and personal experiences.

Accessibility hour The first hour (14:00 – 15:00) of the Fairs will be designated as an Accessibility Hour, allowing students who have access needs and requirements advance access to the employers available, in order to have uninterrupted and meaningful conversations about the roles on offer.

SQE information session Thursday 30th January 2020, 13:00 – 14:00 This session will review the routes to qualification, with a particular focus on the solicitor and barrister routes. It will be an opportunity to discuss the next steps following completion of your undergraduate studies and consider how regulators are looking to change how qualification is attained. Surviving or thriving: Mental health awareness in the workplace Friday 7th February 2020, 13:00 – 15:00 In this panel you will hear from professionals across various sectors discussing how you can survive and thrive in your professional life with a mental health condition. The aim of the event is to raise awareness on mental health in the workplace, inform you of the types of reasonable adjustments that exist postdisclosure and discuss what well-being is in a practical sense. All students, whether you have a mental health condition, are interested in the subject or would just like more information about reducing stress are welcome to attend. ALL

LGBT+ workplace equality: Increasing inclusion Monday 10th February 2020, 18:00 – 20:00 This event is aimed at the LGBT+ community at City, their friends and allies to discuss ways to create an inclusive work environment. Discover different models of LGBT+ inclusion in diverse sectors with this event hosted by City’s Careers Service in collaboration with the Students’ Union.
