Help with your career City careers consultants
Professional Liaison Unit (PLU)
Consultants offer three main types of one-to-one appointments to suit different requirements: quick query appointments, career guidance appointments and mock interview appointments. The careers consultants also deliver specific careers workshops throughout the year for all students, including offering general career advice and CV and application checking. These can be booked on CareersHub and are open to students from all Schools.
The School of Mathematics, Computer Science & Engineering strongly encourages all of its students to undertake valuable professional experience as part of their degree as it is an excellent way to get an insight into the industry. The PLU works closely with students and employers to support internships and industrial placements, which usually take place during the penultimate year of study.

SASS Employability and Student Mobility Services The Employability and Student Mobility team provide advice and guidance about two sandwich year programmes: the IPT Work Placements Programme and Exchange Study Abroad Programme to students from the School of Arts & Social Sciences (SASS). Pupillage Advice Service (PAS) for BVS students The Pupillage Advice Service offers pupillage advice appointments and mock interviews of 45 minutes to students on the Bar Vocational Studies course. All the PAS advisers are or were practising barristers who have been involved in the selection of pupils or trainees. They have had the benefit of seeing large numbers of student application forms and know which of those generated interviews. Appointments are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and run in term time only. Please do not wait until you are invited for an interview to book an appointment. Bayes Business School Undergraduate Placements Office The dedicated Placements team are here to support second-year undergraduate students who are interested in a work placement and/ or summer internship. The team can help by alerting you to placement and summer internship opportunities and deadlines through email or online resources as well as offering one-to-one advice and support, including help with your CV, cover letters and applications. The Placements service also deliver placement and internship preparation briefing sessions and not only monitor you throughout your time on placement but can match you with previous placement students for advice and help you prepare for interviews. The Micro-Placements Programme The Micro-Placements Programme is a 15-credit elective offering opportunities for students who want to explore careers different from those traditionally associated with their degree. Micro-Placements are an exciting way to gain professional experience through short summer placements with a wide range of London-based employers. It is a great way to experience reallife exposure to the business environment and enhance your employability skills. Micro-Placements will take place in June and/ or July 2022 and are 140 hours long across a minimum of four weeks.

School of Arts & Social Sciences events Work placements for year 2 info session Wednesday 20th October 2021, 14:00 – 15:00 This session is for second-year students interested in doing a sandwich year work placement through the Integrated Professional Training Programme as part of their undergraduate degree. Gaining professional work experience is a key part of your degree and will ensure you graduate with extremely valuable and much sought-after employability skills. However, finding a suitable placement can be a challenging experience, so this session will provide you with guidance on how to research and find a placement, where to seek support and hear stories from other students who have just completed their placement year. Influencing others through impactful communications Thursday 21st October 2021, 13:00 – 14:00 No matter what career path you choose, communication skills are vital and the ability to successfully influence others through your communications is a sought-after skill. During this workshop, delivered by the Institute of Internal Communications, you will be given an insight into what makes impactful communication with tips on how you can perfect your communications for maximum impact and influence in a professional setting. Alongside this, you will also hear more about what a career in internal communications looks like and the sort of opportunities available for students and graduates. All

Commercial awareness Wednesday 20th October 2021, 12:00 – 13:00 Delivered by our dedicated careers consultant, this session offers an overview of commercial awareness and how to gain it. You will learn how to effectively research an industry and build an understanding of what employers need you to know to make you an attractive hire. By the end the session you will have gained: • An overview of what commercial awareness is • Knowledge on how to develop commercial awareness • Insight on how you can demonstrate it in applications and interviews. Developing a scoring model for customers Thursday 21st October 2021, 16:00 – 18:30 This session will provide you with an overview of risk and credit risk, with the aim of helping you understand statistical techniques used in finance. You’ll gain an insight into how financial risk is managed in banks and be introduced to machine learning in managing risks to enable you to understand how to develop a scoring model for customers. Scoring models are used to assign a score to an individual which gives you an insight on their predicted riskiness. This riskiness is based on predicting the probability of default, indicating if a customer is unlikely to pay. Its development methodology is based on a trade-off between statistical and machine learning techniques as well as business knowledge. This session will cover: • How financial risk is managed in banks • An introduction to risk and credit risk • Machine learning in managing risks • Statistical techniques used in finance • Modelling a scorecard used to score the creditworthiness of a client. Breaking into financial services – FX and securities lending by Natalia Lopez Thursday 28th October 2021, 18:00 – 19:30 This workshop will introduce you to FX and securities lending services. There will be a discussion around the differences between investment and custodian banks as well as the meaning of financial vocabulary often found in job descriptions. You will learn about different career options available within the sector and the skills and experience required for securing each role and discover useful online resources and research ideas. By attending this session, you will: • Learn about securities lending and FX services and their role in the financial markets • Enhance your financial vocabulary • Gain an understanding of the roles available in the industry • Learn about commercial awareness and how to use it during interviews.

The Legal Cheek Virtual Pupillage Fair Saturday 9th October 2021, 10:00 – 13:00 This event gives students from all parts of the UK the opportunity to meet leading chambers from their laptops. Students based overseas who intend to practise as barristers and are eligible to work in the UK, are also encouraged to attend. Each participating chambers has a virtual booth with a livestream where you will be able to join video chats with barristers, pupils and pupillage committees. How will the Fairs work? All Fairs will take place in a virtual environment, where employers will be holding group talks alongside offering one-to-one chats with students. You will need to have access to an electronic device to join on the day. To attend the Fairs, you will need to register with Symplicity. Once we have confirmed that you are a City student, you will receive an email confirming your registration on Symplicity and allowing you to set your password. You will then be able to log into your account at any point and register for the Fairs. Diversity and inclusion in banking and finance

This panel will give you more confidence by speaking with Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) panelists to understand their journey of applying for their first professional role as a BAME applicant, how they transitioned from being a graduate to a full-time employee and any challenges they may have faced. This event is open to all students across all degree disciplines and backgrounds with an interest in banking and finance, with a particular focus on students from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds.
This suite of sessions aims to highlight and discuss challenges of breaking into the legal sector and how underrepresented groups can break down those barriers to achieve career success. In session one, legal sector representatives from underrepresented groups will be invited to share some of the barriers they have faced in breaking into the legal sector. They will also highlight some of their key successes in their careers, outlining what it took for them to achieve these goals. All
Spotlight on diversity in law session two: Networking with confidence to build professional connections and sector knowledge February 2022 Having connections in the legal sector can be extremely useful in securing your dream job and good sector knowledge always helps you stand out in a competitive field. In this session, we will get insights from legal sector representatives from underrepresented groups on how you can make a lasting impression at networking events and use these connections to your advantage. We will also discuss the importance of good sector knowledge and how you can grow it. Work placements for year 1 students Wednesday 30th March 2022, 14:00 – 15:00 This session is aimed at current firstyear students who are considering doing a placement year (sandwich year option) after their second year of studies. Gaining professional work experience is a key part of your degree and will ensure you graduate with extremely valuable and much sought-after employability skills. However, finding a placement can be a challenging experience so we designed this session to help you prepare for it.
