Welcome from

Sponsors of the 2021 Law and Social Sciences Fair Essex Court Chambers is delighted to sponsor the 2021 Law and Social Sciences Fair. The Fair provides a great opportunity for City students to learn and ask questions about exciting employment opportunities and to hear about the personal experience of those working in the Law and Social Sciences sectors. Our members are committed to acting in a socially responsible manner and are involved in initiatives that promote the furtherance of equality and diversity and promote access to the legal profession and to the Bar. Examples include extensive work for the Social Mobility Foundation, a mentoring scheme designed for underrepresented groups at the Bar, an annual student open day, Pro Bono work and various outreach projects. As a leading set of barristers’ chambers, we are looking for the brightest and best candidates from all backgrounds and institutions and encourage applications from both law and non-law graduates. Chambers is a friendly and diverse place to work, offering outstanding opportunities to those who want to practise at the Commercial Bar. Please speak to us about pupillage at Essex Court Chambers. Before the Fair

TOP TIPS Asking killer questions Ensure to turn up prepared with questions that will help you decide if a particular organisation is the one for you. These might be about work culture, long-term career prospects, opportunities to work internationally and opportunities for professional qualifications. You may also wish to ask questions about recent news stories or big issues facing a particular organisation or industry. Avoid asking questions which are easily answered with basic research.

Get ahead of the game For top tips, etiquette and best practice when preparing for a Careers Fair, read the resource document created by our careers consultant team at: careershub.city.ac.uk/docs/37/Making-the-Most-of-CareersEvents.pdf

Making the most of your time with employers The Fair will take place on Symplicity. During the Fair employers will be hosting presentations about their organisations as well as one-to-one chats with students. Find out more about how to use the Symplicity Fair system and see the schedule of the group presentations at: https://buff.ly/3BtZMrN

Getting off to a great start Remember that employers are there to meet you too. Expect to be asked questions such as ‘tell me about your course and why you decided to study it’ and ‘what interests you about our organisation or field?’ Introduce yourself with your name, course and year of study. You may want to say a few words about your career aspirations, areas of interest and why you have approached the employer in front of you.

Accessibility The City Careers Fairs will take place virtually via Symplicity and Microsoft Teams. For accessibility information and support, visit the links below. Symplicity: www.symplicity.com/accessibility Microsoft Teams: https://bit.ly/MSTeams-accessibility Jot down some notes in the space below.

On the day

DO

Approach the employer as you would do for an interview – first impressions count Start conversations with expressions such as “I am interested in...” or “I know about your company and would like to find out more about...” Be proactive, keen and upload an up-to-date copy of your CV to the Symplicity platform ahead of the event Briefly outline your knowledge of the company and express enthusiasm in what the company does Ask employers what skills and experience they require so you can tailor your responses to what they are looking for Use the space in the guide to note down the name of anyone you enjoyed talking to. If they inspired you to work for their organisation, mention this in your application form Dress to project a professional image – present yourself as you would at an interview Follow standard virtual etiquette, keep your microphone on mute unless speaking and make others in your household aware that you will be in a video meeting.

DON'T

Monopolise a single person during presentation Q&As Ask questions that a quick search of the employer’s website could answer for you Dress too casually (jeans, trainers and baseball caps are not recommended).

What would your ideal candidate look like?

“If you set your standards high and have a strong work ethic then Orrick could be for you. “They will be independent and fair. They will prosecute independently, without bias and will seek to deliver justice in every case. They will be honest and open. They will treat everyone with respect. They will behave professionally and strive for excellence.” CPS

You will need to show that you are a resilient individual, with the drive and determination to succeed for our clients. You will also need to show that you have a strong academic background.” Weightmans LLP

“Empathetic, proactive, resilient and flexible. We want candidates to be willing to learn, good at using their initiative and able to think on their feet, as our setting can be challenging at times. The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) prosecutes criminal cases that have been investigated by the police and other investigative organisations in England and Wales. The CPS is independent and we make our decisions independently of the police and government. Our duty is to make sure that the right person is prosecuted for the right offence and to bring offenders to justice wherever possible. The CPS decides which cases should be prosecuted, determines the appropriate charges in more serious or complex cases and advises the police during the early stages of investigations. The CPS also prepares cases and presents them at court and provides information, assistance and support to victims and prosecution witnesses. www.cps.gov.uk @CPSCareers linkedin.com/company/crown-prosecution-service
