Before the Fair

Use the space under the exhibitors to note down your employer specific questions. Prepared a couple of sentences to introduce yourself clearly and succinctly to organisations? TOP TIPS Asking killer questions Ensure to turn up prepared with questions that will help you decide if a particular organisation is the one for you. These might be about work culture, long-term career prospects, opportunities to work internationally and opportunities for professional qualifications. You may also wish to ask questions about recent news stories or big issues facing a particular organisation or industry. Avoid asking questions which are easily answered with basic research.

Get ahead of the game Get fast-track entry to the Fair and learn how to make a great first impression on employers by attending our Fair preparation session on Monday 4th November from 1pm – 2pm. Register your attendance online at: https://buff.ly/2JeTgga

Making the most of the Careers Clinics City’s careers consultants will deliver Careers Clinic sessions during the Fair. These 15-minute appointments will cover a range of general careers advice, ranging from CV and LinkedIn checks to application advice. Remember to bring along a copy of your CV.

Getting off to a great start Remember that employers are there to meet you, too. Expect to be asked questions such as ‘tell me about your course and why you decided to study it’ and ‘what interests you about our organisation or field?’ Introduce yourself with your name, course and year of study. You may want to say a few words about your career aspirations, areas of interest and why you have approached the employer in front of you. Jot down some notes in the space below.

What would your ideal candidate look like?

“ Someone that is a self-starter, diligent and an individual who has a track record of managing their own workload. A strong problem solver who can work independently, with support available when required. Must be aware of the endto-end application lifecycle from requirements gathering, through design, development, testing, release and maintenance.” Capacitas

“ Our ideal candidate is someone who is enthusiastic and willing to learn. We don’t mind what degree background a student comes from but we encourage all applicants to think about how they can demonstrate their curiosity about technology. This may be research you have done into IBM Watson, or it could be that you know how to code – or anything in between!” IBM

“ The main thing TfL are looking for in candidates is a passion for their chosen industry and of course, to work for TfL. Afterall, they can train you in their systems, processes and knowledge specific to a role, but they can’t give you genuine interest and enthusiasm or a willingness to work hard for them.” Transport for London

“ Our people look at situations with an open mind and seek out a range of perspectives before exercising sound judgement. We believe that we work best when we work together, so we look for people who work well in an inclusive environment and those who understand themselves and their impact on the world around them.” Financial Conduct Authority

“ Someone who is smart, ambitious, driven and has a fierce thirst for knowledge. We value intellectual curiosity highly here so are always looking for those eager to learn. We like to maintain a fun and sociable atmosphere in the office so it is important that any new graduates are up for joining in the fun!” Galatea Associates

“ Our workplace should be as diverse as our communities. We’re committed to fostering an inclusive environment for people with diverse backgrounds and experiences, including women, people of colour, people with disabilities, the LGBTQ+ community and other underrepresented minorities. So come as you are! Bring your unique personality, skills and interests to work.” Pivotal Software
