We are delighted to present our programme of employability events for the Business School 2020/21, designed in collaboration with the School. These events aim to give you an insight into a range of career options and the skills you will need to successfully apply for work experience, summer placements, year-long placements, graduate and postgraduate jobs within the business and finance sectors. You will have numerous opportunities to hear from and network with a range of professionals, employers and alumni from the School. This guide will help you identify what you want from a future career, choose a sector or role that interests you and help you to build a plan to explore and achieve your career goals and maximise your student experience at City. No matter what stage of your career planning, these events can help you:

Help with your career

The Business School Undergraduate Placement Office A placement year is a great opportunity for you to develop practical skills and graduate with one year’s professional work experience, helping you to stand out from the crowd. The dedicated Placements team are here to support all stage two Business School undergraduate students who are interested in a work placement and/or summer internship. They can help with: • A lerting you of placement and summer internship opportunities directly via email or our online resources and keep you updated on upcoming deadlines • Offering one-to-one advice and support, including help with your CV, cover letters and applications • Delivering placement or internship preparation briefing sessions • Matching you with previous placement students for advice and to help you prepare for an interview • Monitoring you throughout your time on placement. We are located in the Drysdale Building, Level 3, Room E316. Our office opening hours are from 09:30 to 13:00.

Meet your careers consultants Undergraduate students are encouraged to book appointments to get further support with their career planning, applications and interviews. Twenty-minute appointments can be booked for CVs, cover letters, application checks and quick queries. Forty-minute appointments can be booked for longer guidance or mock interviews. In-person, phone, Skype and Microsoft Teams appointments can be booked online via City CareersHub.

Events Programme 2020/21 Term one events will all be delivered online. Term two events may also be delivered online, but we will keep you informed via careershub.city.ac.uk/students once they are confirmed. Career immersion evenings

Winning CVs and covering letters in banking, finance and consultancy

Throughout October 2020 Spend a unique evening with organisations like NatWest Markets, KPMG, BT, Siemens, the Home Office, Ministry of Defence, Teacher Stern Solicitors, London Metropolitan Police and a body of medical experts for an in-depth career immersion covering what it’s really like working in these sectors. The event will also cover opportunities that exist within the industries, what a successful application looks like, mock interviews, CV critiquing, group exercises and more. Back by popular demand, the event will give you the opportunity to undertake two-hour rotations with sectors of your choice, while still enjoying the benefit of all the stalls to have more personal conversations. The event is ideal for students who feel they need some extra support and guidance when it comes to making an informed career choice.

Wednesday 7th October 2020, 12:00 – 13:00 This session is for the Business School students hoping to get into the finance, banking or consultancy sectors. This session will enable you to: • Create and structure a CV addressing the unique requirements for these competitive sectors • Understand what content to include in an impactful covering letter • Submit a complete and stand-out application. Accountancy virtual event – Say ‘hello’ to firms hiring in 2020/21 Wednesday 7th October – Thursday 8th October 2020 RateMyPlacement’s accountancy virtual event is an opportunity for you to network with employers and discover what work experience and graduate opportunities are available to you in 2020/21. Introduction to consultancy The importance of commercial awareness and how to develop it Wednesday 14 October 2020, 12:00 – 13:00 th

Commercial awareness is highly valued by employers, crucial to careers success and important at all stages from insights through to internships and graduate roles. This workshop will ensure you leave with an understanding of: • W hat commercial awareness is and how to develop it • W hy employers value it • How to apply commercial awareness in your applications and interviews. Careers in foreign exchange Thursday 15th October 2020, 18:00 – 19:30 This session aims to introduce the foreign exchange (FX) industry enabling attendees to gain an understanding of different FX transactions and the market participants involved. You will also learn financial vocabulary relating to FX concepts that will be useful to understand prior to an interview. By attending the event you will: • Learn about FX transactions and their role in the financial markets • Enhance your financial vocabulary • Gain an understanding of the roles available in the foreign exchange industry and the skills required to succeed • Understand commercial awareness and how to use it during interviews. Monday 19th October 2020, 18:00 – 20:00 This event will give you direct access to employer representatives from a consultancy firm, where you can learn more about their career journey so far, the challenges they have faced and how they overcame them. Breaking into banking and finance Wednesday 21st October – Thursday 22nd October 2020 The post-COVID-19 future will be different, but if you’re thinking about a career in banking and finance, this is your opportunity to meet employers and discover exactly what that future looks like. RateMyPlacement’s banking and finance virtual event is designed for any and all students pursuing a career in this sector. It’s a chance to interact with banks and financial institutions from the comfort of your kitchen table. The event will include one-to-one sessions with employers, presentations, access to exclusive downloadable content as well as competitions and giveaways. All

Developing a behavioural scoring model for customers and estimating the probability of default Thursday 22nd October 2020, 14:00 – 16:00 This workshop is for any student interested in the application of mathematical modelling in financial institutions. We will first explore the use of rating models across different areas of financial institutions and the different steps involved in the development of a behavioural scoring model. This will be followed by a practical case study on how to assess the performance of this model and perform a calibration to calculate the probability of default. Learning outcomes include: • How to develop a behavioural scoring model and its uses across financial institutions • Assess the performance of a behavioural scoring model • Use the output of the behavioural scoring model to estimate the probability of default and how to calibrate the model. Round table session: Explore life as an actuary Thursday 19th November 2020, 18:00 – 20:00 If you are an Actuarial Science student with an interest in pursuing a graduate career within the financial risk markets, this session is certainly one to attend. With industry professionals in attendance, its aim is to provide a platform to ask them a range of questions and establish what professional life is like within the financial risk sector. The type of questions you will be able to ask are: • How did they get to where they are now? • W hat is a typical day in their current role? • W hat skills are needed to succeed in the industry? UG1

Understanding yourself and planning your future Wednesday 7th October 2020, 12:00 – 13:00 If you are not sure where to start when thinking about your career, the first step in making an effective career plan is understanding yourself and what you want from your career. This session will help you reflect on your skills, strengths, values and interests and how these might impact your future plans. By the end of the session you will have a clearer sense of what you want from your career and you will feel confident researching career options. All

Networking and making professional contacts

CVs, covering letters and applications Wednesday 21st October 2020, 12:00 – 13:00 This workshop will help you write winning CVs, covering letters and applications and learn to recognise the key factors in terms of both content and structure. This is a great opportunity to pick up some practical tips which will set your applications apart from others. By the end of the session you will be able to write an effective CV, covering letter and application. All

In today’s employment market, being able to network in a confident and effective way is important for building a personal brand and increasing employability. This session will explore the benefits of networking and developing strong professional relationships. You will learn what makes effective networking, both online and in person. By the end of the session, you will have increased your confidence in handling all types of networking scenarios.

In this session, you will learn how to prepare for interviews and answer competency, strengths-based and tricky questions. We will also look at the various activities that could take place at an assessment centre and what employers are looking for in each of them. The session will help you present yourself with confidence and minimise any anxiety about going to interviews and assessment centres for internships, placements, graduate jobs and graduate schemes.

Finding part-time work Wednesday 4th November 2020, 12:00 – 13:00 Earn while you learn and develop your skills by joining us to find out more about City’s Unitemps service and other ways to find part-time work on and off campus. We will also look at what makes an effective CV and covering letter for part-time work. By the end of the session, you will receive practical tips and resources which will support you in gaining part-time work during your studies. All

How to find an internship, placement or volunteering opportunity Wednesday 11th November 2020, 12:00 – 13:00 This session will help you understand the value of internships, placements and volunteering and will explore how to find and secure opportunities. You will learn about resources that can help you with your search, understand what the recruitment process might involve and discover how to make more effective applications. By the end of the session, you will receive tips and resources which will support you in gaining relevant professional experience.

International students: Working in the UK Wednesday 18th November 2020, 12:00 – 13:00 This session provides clarification on the options available for current students on a Tier 4 visa who wish to stay and work in the UK after completing their course. It will also provide an insight into what employers are looking for and highlight advice and support open to students. This session is run in conjunction with the International Advice team. All

Mock assessment centre Wednesday 25th November 2020, 13:00 – 15:00 Try out some of the practical exercises employers may use at assessment centres and receive constructive feedback from expert careers consultants and fellow students about your performance. These sessions will help you prepare both practically and mentally for an employer’s assessment centre. By the end of the session, you will feel more confident about taking part in employers’ assessment centres and understand their role in recruitment and selection. All

CAREERS FAIRS Fairs offer a unique opportunity for you to meet a vast range of organisations in just a couple of hours who offer graduate and postgraduate roles as well as first year, placement and internship opportunities. By attending one of our virtual Fairs, you will have the chance to meet representatives from a range of public and private sector organisations; including law firms, charities, barristers’ chambers, banks, tech, engineering firms and more, depending on the Fair you attend. You will also have the opportunity to hear from representatives about their responsibilities and their personal experiences.

Employability Skills Programme The Employability Skills Programme will prepare you for your transition from education to work, exploring all aspects of the selection and recruitment process. LGBT+ Increasing inclusion in the workplace February 2021, 18:00 – 20:00 This event, aimed at the LGBT+ community and allies at City, will discuss the experience of being LGBT+ in the workplace as well as workplace inclusivity. Hosted by the Students’ Union in collaboration with CityCareers, the event will offer an opportunity to network with leading professionals and take part in a Q&A session. All

International Women’s Day: Successful women in the workplace March 2021 To mark International Women’s Day, the Students’ Union and CityCareers are hosting a panel with an exciting line up of highly successful women in a variety of sectors. The event aims to help women plan, progress and become more successful in their chosen careers. Surviving or thriving: Mental health awareness in the workplace May 2021 In this panel you will hear from professionals across various sectors discussing how you can thrive in your professional life and maintain mental health wellbeing. The aim of the event is to raise awareness on mental health in the workplace and discuss what wellbeing is in a practical sense. All

Commercial awareness in law panel Spring 2021, 18:00 – 20:00 This panel aims to develop your understanding and ability to articulate key aspects of commercial awareness to support applications and future practice. Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE) information session Spring 2021, 12:00 – 13:00 This session will review the routes to qualification, with a particular focus on the solicitor and barrister routes. It will be an opportunity to discuss the next steps following completion of your undergraduate studies and consider how regulators are looking to change how qualification is attained. Key areas covered will include: • Qualifying as a solicitor • Qualifying as a barrister • The changes currently under review by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) and Bar Standards Board (BSB). Investing in yourself: Breaking down common barriers and maximising career yields Spring 2021 The aim of this session is to give students who have an interest in financial services direct access to highly successful Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) industry professionals who have been through the higher education process and have overcome the typical barriers faced by BAME individuals. The session aims to: • Enable students to hear about common barriers and how to overcome them • Listen to the success stories of industry professionals • Demystify financial services and roles within finance • Support application processes with practical hints and tips from industry professionals. Although this session is aimed at BAME students, anyone can participate. All


Worldwide careers opportunities panel Spring 2021, 18:00 – 20:00 As part of International City Week, this panel will provide you with useful insights into the breadth of opportunities available globally to help broaden your scope when applying for jobs. The event will enable you to: • Network and connect with like-minded individuals and industry professionals • Appreciate why international experience is an incredible advantage for graduates in today’s job market • Understand the benefits and challenges of pursuing an international career. GradVantage Summer 2021 This all-inclusive programme is designed to give you a head start to create the future you want. As part of this scheme, you can expect: • Three specialised one-to-one career sessions with a dedicated careers consultant • A place on the exclusive GradVantage Academy where you can explore possible career options, discover where to find opportunities and learn how to sell yourself and succeed at interviews • The opportunity to gain an eight-week paid internship with a small-to-medium-sized enterprise (SME) through speed recruitment events exclusive to GradVantage students.
