ARTS, CULTURE & SOCIETY EVENTS 7th Annual John DeBella Veterans Radiothon A strong line-up of local and national celebrities including Phillies’ pitcher Cole Hamels, late night host Jimmy Fallon and rocker Alice Cooper, will be calling in to voice their support when 102.9 WMGK morning host, John DeBella broadcasts his 7th Annual John DeBella Veterans Radiothon live from outside of the National Constitution Center on Friday June 14, 2013 from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. All proceeds from the Radiothon will go to benefit local veterans via the Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service and Education Center (PVMSEC). Over the past six years, DeBella has raised over $600,000 for the PVMSEC via his annual Radiothon. Those interested in making a secure online donation to the Radiothon can do so via a link on the station’s website – www.WMGK.com. Listeners can make call-in donations via 1-800-678-WMGK(9645) on Friday, June 14.

Merge Dance Studio’s First Annual Recital Merge Dance Studio, “Where Dance and Fitness Merge,” will be presenting their first annual recital on June 15, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School. Merge Dance Studio’s students have been working hard all year on their dance technique, which will be showcased during this performance. Dance styles to be performed include ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, modern/contemporary, and jazz funk/hip-hop with the performance including dancers’ ages 3 years old to adult. This promises to be a fun performance for the whole family! The performance is open to the public and tickets are available for $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Tickets for children 12 and under are $13 in advance and $18 at the door while children 3 and under can attend for free. Gala Celebrating Finns and Swedes in America Since 1638 The New Sweden Alliance will host a Jubilee Symphonic Concert at the Independence Seaport Museum Saturday, June 15, 2013, 7:30 p.m. The concert features musicians from Philadelphia, the Delaware Symphony, and Finland, led by maestro David Amado, and Finnish pianist Marja Kaisla, in music by Sibelius, Wiren and Beethoven (Piano concerto #5, “Emperor”). A gala reception will follow the concert. The evening will end with a traditional Scandinavian bonfire by the Delaware River. The gala is part of the “Finns and Swedes in America Since 1638” Festival that will take place on June 15 at Penn’s Landing. The festival, from noon to 6 p.m., will feature Finnish and Swedish music, culture, food, and family fun. The headliner for the day is ABBA Tribute Band ABBA Girlz. Other groups performing are Sattuma, a Finnish Karelian Folk Band from Europe; New Sweden Band playing Scandinavian-inspired bluegrass; IVA, a Swedish popular singer and her band; and Swedish DJ & Karaoke Master Lars. Additional family fun will include traditional Scandinavian games, food and gifts, and tours aboard a docked re-creation of the ship that brought Finnish and Swedish settlers to the Delaware Valley. New Freedom Theatre in Association with Project1Voice Presents “A Soldiers Play” On Monday, June 17, New Freedom Theatre partners with Project1Voice to present a stage reading of “A Soldiers Play,” a drama written by Pulitzer Prize winner, Charles Fuller. The play draws on a murder mystery to explore the complex feelings of anger and resentment that some African Americans have toward one another, and the way white racially prejudiced attitudes are reflected into the behavior of the oppressed African American. This play is loosely based on Herman Melville’s novella Billy Budd. On this international day of celebration, 30 theaters of the African Diaspora, from Los Angeles to New York to Port Elizabeth, South Africa will come together through benefit staged readings in 1VOICE, to celebrate African American theater. Free Performance Opportunity for Adult Musicians at Settlement Music School Settlement Music School has chosen to present “Chamber Music Conversations” at its Mary Louise Curtis Branch, 416 Queen Street in Queen Village, and 5 blocks south of South Street. This event, on June 21, is free and open to amateur adult musicians of all levels. Settlement will welcome classical, folk, jazz and rock musicians and ensembles who would like to participate. Settlement will organize a chamber ensemble for musicians to play in from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. or 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Participants can also come without an instrument, learn about Settlement’s programs for adults, and simply socialize during a wine and cheese reception at 5:30 p.m. Tours of the branch and information about the School’s adult offerings such as its growing Adult Chamber Players Program, Adult Rock Band, World Rhythms Workshop, and individual instruction and group classes such as Adult Piano and Adult Guitar will be available throughout the afternoon and evening. Make Music Philly is a day of free music taking place all over the city of Philadelphia on the first day of summer, the longest day of the year. Its purpose is to engage citizens in highlighting and celebrating the role of music in our lives and our city.

Eastern State Penitentiary Hosts “Family Weekend: Pets in Prison” Eastern State Penitentiary will host “Family Weekend: Pets in Prison” on Saturday and Sunday, June 22 and 23 and again on August 17 and 18. The event, designed for kids and adults of all ages, will feature interactive and educational activities all weekend long. Visitors can learn about the role of animals throughout Eastern State’s 142-year history, meet (and adopt) shelter dogs from a local prison training program, and participate in animal-themed activities. From 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. (last entry 4 p.m.), families can participate in animal-themed activities; learn more about Eastern State Penitentiary’s most famous four-legged resident, Pep the Dog; and learn about other animals throughout the prison’s history. Art of Andrew Wyeth Studio Tour Monday and Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., through November 19 – immerse yourself in the art of Andrew Wyeth with a visit to his studio, the location where many of his finest works were painted. The program begins with a docent-led tour of the museum’s renowned Wyeth Galleries, followed by a leisurely lunch in the museum restaurant overlooking the scenic Brandywine River. After lunch, board a shuttle bus for a short ride to the Andrew Wyeth Studio where, surrounded by the tools of the artist as he left them, a guide will discuss Wyeth’s creative process. Cost, including lunch, museum tour and all admission fees, is $35 for adults, $30 for seniors and $28 for members.
