Presidents Cup: Supporting Team USA

It’s an exciting time in Dublin! On the heels of the Dublin Irish Festival begins the countdown to The Presidents Cup, which will draw even more international attention to our City. This issue, we give you a sneak preview of coming attractions – from the Dublin Arts Council’s Playing Through traveling piano art installation and the revelation of the top 18 memorable moments in Dublin golf history to the fan experience village planned by Presidents Cup organizers. While we’re celebrating Dublin at home, Hilda Doyle and her daughters are representing the City on the road with their band, the Ladies of Longford. The group is playing Irish festivals all over the country this year, including our own Aug. 2-4. Other talented individuals featured in this issue include the many contributors to our annual Shutterbugs contest and high school baker Jorie Hodapp. In addition, the Dublin Chamber of Commerce is serving up the City’s most delicious delicacies at the Taste of Dublin Sept. 17. Each year, we are proud to welcome international golfers to Muirfield Village Golf Club for the Memorial Tournament. This year, golfers from around the globe also will be arriving for The Presidents Cup, which will be played Oct. 1-6 at Muirfield Village. While the biennial Ryder Cup features European players, The Presidents Cup offers the world’s best non-European players an opportunity to compete in match-play competition. Fred Couples, featured on our cover, will serve as captain of the U.S. team, while Nick Price of South Africa will captain the international team. As we prepare to roll out the “green” carpet for The Presidents Cup, we also are gearing up to cheer on Team USA. Like the Olympics, international golfing competitions offer a chance to show our patriotic spirit while demonstrating good sportsmanship. Throughout central Ohio, expect to see the red, white and blue flying proudly from flagpoles and incorporated into special events and activities. The U.S. Team has won the competition seven times and tied once in the nine previous competitions, so we have a pretty good record to defend as The Presidents Cup comes back to America after being played in Australia two years ago. Of course, we won’t be the only ones keeping an eye on the action. The tournament is expected to attract more than 600 domestic and international media representatives. The event will be broadcast to a national and international audience of 200 countries and territories via 16 international television networks. The live golf coverage is expected to be broadcast a total of 26 hours over four days to 600 million households. As detailed in the story on page 16, there will be a series of opportunities for residents to celebrate playing host to The Presidents Cup, its players and visitors. We hope that you will take part in these events and show your support for Dublin and Team USA. Sincerely,

Marsha I. Grigsby, City Manager

Stephanie Doyle and Dublin residents Hilda Doyle and Heather Doyle Fraser have been singing together since Stephanie and Heather were girls.

When Hilda Doyle’s daughters were young, they’d occasionally accompany her during gigs. Hilda, who has lived in the Dublinshire neighborhood with her family since 1989, has been singing professionally for more than 30 years, often performing four or five nights a week and every weekend. After she “retired” from singing solo in 1998, it was her daughters, Heather Doyle Fraser and Stephanie Doyle, who brought her back to the stage for an encore that has lasted more than a decade. Since 2001, the three women have been the heart of the Celtic folk group Ladies of Longford. In the last 12 years, the group has grown in popularity and reach. Always favorites at central Ohio Irish pubs, the Ladies recently have stepped up their touring schedule and are performing at Irish festivals in Michigan, Illinois, Kentucky and New York, among others. It was a trip to the Dublin Irish Festival, where the family saw the group Cherish the Ladies, that nudged Hilda in the direction of starting her own Celtic band. “Up until around that time, (Celtic music) was mostly male-dominated,” says Heather, the band’s percussionist and a Muirfield resident. “It was mostly drinking songs, but then Riverdance and Celtic Woman really broadened Celtic music.” “We saw an opening that we could we could get in and put our own spin on things. We could do something totally different, but still sort www.dublinlifemagazine.com

of familiar to people,” Hilda says. The Doyle family was immersed in Irish culture long before the band formed. Patriarch Frank Doyle has always been interested in his own Irish roots, says Hilda, his wife of 42 years. The band is named after the county in Ireland to which Frank’s family is native. “He’s always been a member of the Shamrock Club, the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the greater Columbus Irish community,” says Hilda, who grew up in Portsmouth, Ohio. Raised on bluegrass and folk music, Hilda found it easy to transition to Irish tunes. Heather and Stephanie, in their 20s when Ladies of Longford was conceived, were already accomplished singers. In order to round out the band, Hilda suggested they add instruments to their skill set. Stephanie took up the guitar and bass, and Heather focused on percussion. Hilda lends her voice – and decades of experience in musical arrangement. “She’s a brilliant arranger,” Stephanie says of her mother. The addition of fiddler Elizabeth “Liz” Blickenstaff and multi-talented musician Molly Pauken on drums and bass completed the group. Early gigs at the Ancient Order of Hibernians’ St. Patrick’s Day gathering in German Village and the 2001 Dublin Irish Festival helped launch the band’s career. More recently, the group performed at a 2012 Irish band showcase hosted

by the City of Dublin, which drew Irish festival organizers from all over the U.S. From there, they started booking their 2013 schedule, which has them “on the road” from July through the end of September – including two shows at the Dublin Irish Festival, 1:30 p.m. Aug. 3 on the Dublin Stage and 6:15 p.m. Aug. 4 on the Shamrock Stage. Heather describes the group’s sound as “high-energy Celtic folk,” covering Irish favorites with a modern twist. “We’re pretty well known for our harmony,” says Heather. “We’ve all been playing music long enough that our musicianship is very strong.” Though only three out of the five band members are related, the entire group has a family feel, the women say. “You would think that we’re all family,” Stephanie says. “We know each other well and we get along great. There’s no battle for attention of any kind.” Hilda, as the veteran performer, is the group’s de facto leader. She’ll hum a melody and the rest of the group will pick up her idea right away. “When I make mistakes, they follow me. If I’m feeling a groove, there’s never any glitch there,” Hilda says. Hilda and her daughters talk easily together, finishing each other’s sentences and laughing often as they describe some of their more interesting performances. When Heather was a teenager, she once caught her tongue on her braces as she and Stephanie sang with Hilda. And just a few years ago at the Dublin Irish Festival, Hilda split her pants up the back. A kind soul brought her a plaid blanket to wrap around her waist and the Ladies finished their set. When they’re not on stage, Heather and Stephanie keep busy with their day jobs; Stephanie, who lives in Clintonville with her son, is a K-8 music teacher in Columbus, and Heather, who is married and has a daughter, is a professional life coach. Heather and Stephanie both graduated from Bishop Watterson High School. Hilda, a hobbyist landscaper, can frequently be found tending her garden or playing golf. All three women graduated from Ohio University. For more information, visit hildadoyle. com/TheLadies.htm. Lisa Aurand is editor of Dublin Life Magazine. Meet Frank Slavic Dublin Irish Festival Honorary Chair

Frank Slavic, right, with his wife, Michelle

Tim Horton’s franchise owner Frank Slavic is the honorary chair of the 2013 Dublin Irish Festival, joining the ranks of past chairs such as Denny Lynch of Wendy’s International, Cheryl Herbert of OhioHealth and Scott White of IGS Energy. Slavic was chosen for his commitment to the community, and in particular, to the Irish Festival. Slavic’s Tim Horton’s locations – including two in Dublin – have provided refreshments to Festival volunteers for 13 years, serving more than 1,400 volunteers, says City Events Administrator Mary Jo DiSalvo. “He is an outstanding corporate citizen,” DiSalvo says. “As a professional and as a person, this is as good as it gets in our community.” DiSalvo and a handful of former Festival chairs surprised Slavic with the news of the honor while he was at one of his restaurants. “I was bushwhacked at my restaurant,” Slavic says. “I was told I was meeting with Mary Jo for something. … I was quite flabbergasted.” Slavic’s role as honorary chair includes kicking off the IGS Energy 5K and Kids Fun Run/Walk Aug. 1, judging the competition for reddest hair, presiding over the Emerald Club and closing the Festival during the Finale on Aug. 4. One of the things Slavic is most looking forward to is the chance to listen to some Irish music. “We’re usually too busy doing our volunteer work to listen. That’s going to be wonderful,” Slavic says. “I think it’s going to be neat being an ambassador for the Festival.” www.dublinlifemagazine.com

Show Dublin pride by purchasing Irish-themed goods

According to local legend, John Shields was given the honor of naming our City. The area’s surrounding hills and land made him nostalgic, reminding him of his birthplace of Dublin, Ireland. Even more than 200 years later, there is a strong connection between the two Dublins that are separated by 3,571 miles. Our visitors and residents alike have embraced our connection to Dublin, Ireland over the years – through the Dublin Irish Festival, our green fire hydrants, high school mascots (Irish, Shamrocks and Celtics), the St. Patrick’s Day Celebration and much more. And recent research from the Dublin Convention & Visitors Bureau indicated that visitors expect and want more Irish experiences and product when they visit Dublin, Ohio. There are many opportunities to experience Irish product in Dublin that would make John Shields very happy. There are three such shops that serve as great resources to enjoy Dublin without traveling to Ireland. At 1 Stop Bead Shop, Ha’Penny Bridge Imports of Ireland

www.dublinlifemagazine.com

6347 Sawmill Rd., aspiring and experienced crafters alike can select from the shop’s section of Celticthemed charms and beads to craft just the right piece, or take a class to learn how to make Irish-themed jewelry. The Celtic Corner, located in the Gift Shop at the Dublin Arts Council, 7125 Riverside Dr., features a number of hand-crafted gifts and uniquely Dublin works created by local and regional artists. If you ever need to give a unique and thoughtful gift that represents Dublin, Ohio, this is a great resource. Located in Historic Dublin, Ha’Penny Bridge Imports of Ireland, 75 S. High St., is any visitor’s one-stop shop for all things Irish, whether you’re looking for Avoca woolens, Irish lace baptismal gowns, claddagh rings, Belleek china or a jaunty new woolen cap. Ha’Penny can also assist with your Irish-themed wedding with wedding bands, groomsmen’s and bridesmaids’ gifts, and even kilt rental. To further enhance the visitor’s experience and need for more things Irish, the Bureau launched a new Irish Approved Business Program this past winter. The program promotes local establishments that currently offer Irish-inspired activities or merchandise. Each approved business is designated with a window decal to alert visitors that they may find an Irish experience or product at the store. You can find a list of Irish Approved Businesses and other Irish experiences at the Bureau’s website, www. IrishisanAttitude.com.

For more information about the Dublin Convention & Visitors Bureau’s many Irish experiences and offerings, visit www.IrishisanAttitude. com or www.IrishApproved.com. Dublin City Council supports the Irish Approved program through the City’s hotel/motel tax grant fund. Through these grants, City Council funds cultural arts, beautification projects, Historic Dublin improvements, activities that encourage visitors to Dublin and other projects that enhance Dublin. The Presidents Cup, Oct. 1-6, will be more than a golf tournament with two dozen world-class players and throngs of spectators at Muirfield Village Golf Club. Expect recognition of top golf events in Dublin’s history, a tournament-side fun area, a piano on wheels and a street carnival – all tying the community to the prestigious international tournament that will bring worldwide attention to the City. Dan Sullivan, tournament director, says the 10th Cup “is about competition, but it is also about community. (It’s) a perfect example of … the spirit of competition, pride of playing for the country and teammates, sportsmanship, charitable giving, community involvement, fan engagement (and) economic impact.” Twelve American players and 12 from countries outside Europe will compete at the Cup. “They play for their country and for charity,” Sullivan says, pointing out the golfers are not paid and win no prize money – and some of the tournament’s earnings go to charities.

For Dublin and central Ohio, the Cup means a week’s worth of activities beginning Oct. 1. The City of Dublin, the Dublin Arts Council and the Dublin Convention & Visitors Bureau are expanding the tournament atmosphere. Since mid-July, the bureau has been seeking public votes on websites and social media sites to rank the top 18 moments in Dublin’s golf history, says Scott Dring, executive director. While most are from the Memorial Tournament or Muirfield Village, the list includes Dublin Jerome High School boys’ and girls’ golf teams winning state championships in 2011 and 2012. From Muirfield, events include Cup host Jack Nicklaus picking the site for the course he built and various iconic Memorial Tournament moments, including Tiger Woods’ fifth victory that tied Nicklaus’ 74-Tour-victory total. Results of the voting will be announced daily starting in September, one event at a time, up to the tournament opening. One randomly selected voter will receive two tickets for the final day of play. The arts council has commissioned Columbus-based husband-and-wife artists Tim Lai and Eliza Ho to decorate an upright studio piano using a golf theme for the council’s upcoming Playing Through program, says David Guion, council executive director. Suggested by Dublin residents Bea and Warren Fishman, the piano project is patterned after Play Me, I’m Yours, a public art installation that travels internationally. Dublin’s instrument will be moved to various public locations after its Aug. 13 unveiling, usually accompanied by at least one pianist. Guion expects about 25 Dublin school students and 25 teachers and other pianists will be involved. At various venues, some spectators will have the chance to tickle the ivories, too. The City is helping pay for the piano, which will be featured in the city-sponsored Presidents Cup Celebration, a street festival centered in Historic Dublin on Oct. 3. The Playing Through piano will be placed in the middle of the intersection at Bridge and High streets, and the festival will also feature live entertainment, food trucks and a beer garden. When practice begins on Oct. 1, the Cup will unveil a “fan experience area” – open to the public – across Memorial www.dublinlifemagazine.com

Drive from the driving range and the main entrance to the golf course. Playing Through will be there, too, so it can be used and enjoyed by visitors as well as ticket-bearing tournament spectators arriving via foot or shuttle. Sullivan explains that the experience area, open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, will include a visitors’ center, merchandise, food and beverages from local restaurants, a golf interactive area that will feature putting and some instruction, live entertainment, and a huge television screen that will show tournament play. “Anyone can watch the tournament and enjoy food and the atmosphere,” he says. The Cup’s opening ceremony will be at Columbus Commons in downtown Columbus Oct. 2 and feature an evening of activities, beginning at 5 p.m. with an international food festival. Cameron Mitchell Catering, the hospitality food and beverage provider at the tournament, will serve cuisine from various countries. Tickets are $30 per person, with a portion going to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, which will also benefit from the Cup’s charitable distributions. In nine outings, The Presidents Cup has raised $27 million, which has gone to 425 charitable causes in 15 countries. All the golfers – including team captains Fred Couples and Nick Price and their assistants, Cup host Jack Nicklaus and PGA and Cup officials – will take part in the opening ceremony, which will be carried live on the Golf Channel, joined by its parent NBC, to telecast the tournament that will be seen in more than 200 countries and territories. On Oct. 5, the Cup will team with the Short North Business Association to draw visitors to the monthly Gallery Hop. Sullivan estimates 2,000 volunteers from Dublin and central Ohio will help with the tournament. That’s several hundred fewer than required for the Memorial because it’s a different kind of tournament, Sullivan explains. While Cup galleries will be about the same size as the Memorial’s, spectators won’t be walking around the course all day long due to the way the tournament is scheduled. Six foursomes will compete Thursday and Friday. On Saturday, foursomes will play rounds in the morning and afternoon, by far the longest day of golf. On Sunday, a dozen twosomes will play. www.dublinlifemagazine.com

To help spectators keep track of play and often fast-paced scoring changes, 23 huge television screens will be spread around the course and digital scoreboards will be used. “We’ll stick with tradition (manually posted scores) for the Memorial,” says Sullivan, also the veteran executive director for the Memorial. Many ticket holders will be spending part of their time in hospitality areas. There will be centers on every hole on the back nine, many sold to businesses. Dublin will have the pleasure of playing host to hordes of visitors who will be busy away from the tournament as well. Numerous travel packages are available with accommodations in and around Dublin as well as downtown Columbus. So are opportunities to play golf at the Country Club at Muirfield, Tartan Fields Golf Club and Wedgewood Golf and County Club for $175 per round and the Golf Club of Dublin for $125. After the winning team is declared, the trophy presentation comes at a closing ceremony on the driving range, limited to Cup ticket holders and a television audience. Nicklaus, himself a four-time Presidents Cup team captain, and Muirfield Village have hosted the U.S. Amateur, the Solheim Cup and the Ryder Cup. Muirfield is the only course (and Dublin the only city) to host all four events and the third in the U.S. to host The Presidents Cup, Sullivan notes. The Presidents Cup compared to the 1987 Ryder Cup at Muirfield Village is “night and day” different, Sullivan says. The Ryder Cup was smaller, less prominent. The European team won, which “helped catapult (it) to more prominence,” he says. Non-Europeans cannot play in the Ryder Cup. Their chance for international competition began with The Presidents Cup’s inception in 1994. The Presidents Cup “has become much more prominent than the Ryder Cup. We can assist in taking it to the next level,” Sullivan says. “The PGA TOUR will recognize this as the most successful to date,” predicts Sullivan, citing corporate backing, abundant volunteers, ticket sales and community events related to the Cup.

Gambling on Good Taste of Dublin adds live entertainment and casino element

T

Take a chance on new favorites and old classics at this year’s Taste of Dublin. Hosted by the Dublin Chamber of Commerce, the 12th annual Taste returns with a new date Sept. 17 from 6-9 p.m. Dublin residents 21 and older will have the chance to connect with restaurants, caterers and businesses while sampling their best dishes. “It’s just a great event for the community to get out and support the businesses, as well as the businesses to give back to the community,” says Jennifer Jakse, chief operating officer of the Chamber. Each year, the event adapts to meet the demands of the community, the businesses and the year-to-year rise in turnout. But this year the event might see its most significant changes yet. For gambling enthusiasts, there will be the addition of nonmonetary casino events. There will also be live entertainment throughout, including a piano player. Also new this year, Chamber members not in the food business can purchase a table to promote their products or services. To accommodate the expected 1,500 attendees and 40 vendors, the Taste will

34

be held at the conference center in the Online Computer Library Center, says Margery Amorose, Chamber executive director. New OCLC President and CEO Skip Prichard is the honorary chairman for the event. “I think it’s growing because people keep telling their friends,” says Sharon Hodges, Chamber communications director. The event attracts “a wonderful mixture of people” from all over Dublin, Amorose says. And the vendors – including chains such as Buffalo Wild Wings and local favorites such as The Sisters Sweet Shoppe – are just as diverse. Party Panache, a Dublin-based catering service, has had a table at Taste of Dublin every year since the event’s inception. The reason, says owner Patricia Baker, is the opportunity for promotion. “It is just a walking buffet,” Baker says. “The best way for me to sell my product is to get my food in people’s mouths.” Baker doesn’t advertise much to promote her business, so most of its exposure comes from word-of-mouth and events such as the Taste. “There has never been a year when we have not been able to trace new business from this event,” she says. The catering business changes its samples for each Taste. This year Baker plans to offer alfredo pesto meatballs, a chicken dish and a newer dish that has gotten “rave reviews”: a bacon-wrapped, marinated artichoke heart. Tickets are on sale now for $25 through Sept. 6, after which they will cost $35. Each includes unlimited food tastings and Pepsi products. The event will have a cash bar. Corporate table packages starting at

$1,200 include perks such as a VIP party starting at 5 p.m. The event raises about $10,000 annually for the Chamber, which goes toward expanding programming. “Our mission is to help promote businesses in Dublin,” Jakse says. “This event is helping do that by helping the businesses gain exposure.” Baker, a Dublin resident for 31 years, sees a sizable benefit to the community – and to her business – year after year. “It’s a worthwhile event for everyone at both ends,” Baker says, “both the vendors and the community.” Visit www.dublinchamber.org for more information. J

Jorie Hodapp, 15, has a lot on her plate. In addition to playing on Dublin Coffman High School’s golf team, staying involved in church activities and keeping up with schoolwork, she has been running her own cake baking business, Jorie Cakes, since she was 12 years old. Jorie’s baking career started when she took a cake-decorating class at a local craft store. She discovered a passion for baking and decorating cakes and continued to take classes. Soon she began baking for friends, and a few months later, Jorie Cakes was formed. “All my friends would say, ‘I want a Jorie cake,’” she says. Part of Jorie’s inspiration to start her own business came from her grandparents, who owned the TAG Market in Shawnee Hills. “My grandpa helps me a lot with the business side,” Jorie says. Her cakes come in a variety of flavors – all made from scratch in her home kitchen. “I find recipes and change them to make them perfect for my cakes,” Jorie says. A cake can take Jorie anywhere from three to six hours to create. She does all the baking and decorating on her own, with occasional help from her parents, BJ and Lynn, and friends from school. The starting price for most Jorie Cakes is $30 and increases based on the amount of time it takes to make and how intricate the design is. Jorie also sells cupcakes starting at $16 a dozen. She has made cakes for birthdays, graduations, baby showers and bridal showers, and even made a wedding cake this past March. “I will make pretty much anything you ask for,” she says. She has decorated everything from a bathtub cake to a grenade cake. Some of her favorite designs include a dolphin cake and a University of Kentucky wedding cake. Jorie’s Reese’s cake, chocolate cake with peanut butter icing and crushed Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups on top, is one of her most popular orders. She started the business baking one cake a week. After being featured in Coffman’s school magazine and Dublin’s local TV channel, business took off. Now she works on three to five orders in a week that come in via phone at 614-580-5669 or email at joriehodapp@gmail.com. Recently, Jorie’s time has been spent preparing for the Ohio State Fair baking and decorating competitions. She won second place for one cake in 2011 and earned first and second place wins in 2012. www.dublinlifemagazine.com

She also received an offer to provide her carrot cake for The Montgomery Inn in Dublin and Cincinnati but had to turn it down. “The demand was too high, and I just wouldn’t have enough time to keep up with my schoolwork,” Jorie says. Jorie says it was difficult to manage all of her activities and her business when she first started. “I wasn’t used to working on a deadline,” Jorie says. “But my time management is getting better now.” She plans to continue growing her business during her junior and senior years of high school and possibly in college. She hopes to pursue a degree in business and open her own storefront bakery after graduating from college. Jorie enjoys the independence of running her own business. “Baking allows me to put my passion into something that I love and make others happy,” she says. Hayley Ross is a contributing writer. On the Waterfront Life is good on the banks of the Scioto in Dublin Tony Amorose’s property on the east side of the Scioto River runs about halfway into the river and offers a multitude of opportunities to enjoy wildlife, such as ducks, geese and herons.

G

Getting up close and personal with the Scioto River is a daily routine for some Dublin residents. A handful of neighborhoods – Historic Dublin, Bellaire-Limerick, Donegal Cliffs, Amberleigh and Karrer Place – have houses right on the river, allowing homeowners the luxury of waterfront living. There are many independent homes on the river as well. Local Coldwell Banker King Thompson real estate agent Chris Close doesn’t just sell houses on the river – she lives in one in Bellaire-Limerick. Her daughter and fellow real estate agent, Alli, lives in the same neighborhood. “We both live on the river, and we both love the river,” Chris says. Privacy is one element key to the appeal of riverfront living for Chris and her

38

husband, Mike, who live on 2.5 acres. The beauty of nature – both trees and wildlife – glimpsed from the windows and a big back deck is a plus, too. “My son-in-law is a bird-watcher,” Chris says. “I always miss them, but he sees them all the time, the eagles that run up and down the river.” Another highlight is the opportunity for activity on the river, such as canoeing and kayaking, both of which were favorites among Chris’ children when they were younger. And the proximity to nearby events and services is a positive as well; during the summer, she and Mike can hear the Dublin Arts Council’s Sundays at Scioto concerts from her yard, and they’re within walking distance of City bike paths and the park at Donegal Cliffs. They’re

also within walking distance of schools, which was a big help before the kids were grown. Though some riverfront property has a strip of city-owned land between the yard and the river, particularly in the city of Columbus, that’s not the case for either of the Closes’ houses; their property lines go right into the river. That means it’s possible to fish right off the property, Alli says, or just sit by the water. Alli and her husband, Rion Myers, have lived in their house on 2.3 acres for about eight years and have two children, a son and a daughter. Growing up on the river factored into Alli’s decision to live there herself, but the proximity to Bailey Elementary School and walking paths sealed the deal for her. Dublin Realtor Chris Close enjoys an expansive deck overlooking the west side of the Scioto River.

Tony Amorose and his wife, Suzanne Walker, have done extensive landscaping on the hillside. Amorose frequently spots box turtles along the river.

The peacefulness was a bonus; there’s no boat traffic in Dublin, which keeps the noise down. There are also owls, eagles and even foxes to spy. “There’s no motorized access behind us, so it’s very tranquil,” says Alli. “It’s kayaks, it’s canoes, it’s fishermen wading.” While many Dublin riverfront houses are on the west side of the river, there are a handful on the east side, and one of them is owned by Tony Amorose and his wife, Suzanne Walker. She’s been there since 1976 and he’s been there since they married in 1990, but living on the river was nothing new for Amorose – he grew up about a half-mile down the road to the south. Amorose enjoys yard work and gardening, so the 2.5-acre property is perfect for him. The house likely dates to the 19th Century, Amorose says, starting out as a small fishing shack – as many houses in the area did – before extensive remodeling. www.dublinlifemagazine.com

They also keep an eye out for birds – grey herons, white herons, geese and ducks are just a few of the dozens of birds they get to see. A pond on an island in the river never freezes, making it a popular hangout for birds in the winter. “I think we have four different types of woodpeckers,” Kelton says. “Three hundred and sixty-five (days), it’s great to watch.” Dublin isn’t the only place in central Ohio where one can own waterfront property, but Kelton, like Amorose and the Closes, appreciates much about what the city has to offer – bike paths, parks, restaurants and more. WITH COLUMN IST COLLEEN D’ANGELO Colleen D’Angelo is a freelance writer who lives in Dublin with her husband, three children and several small animals. She enjoys playing tennis, walking the Dublin bike paths and traveling.

‘Water’ You Waiting T

There is a misconception that water fitness is only for senior citizens and pregnant women. The reality is that aqua exercise can be an intense cardiovascular and strength training workout suitable for everyone. Water resistance helps burn additional calories and buoyancy takes the pressure off the joint capsule. Your lungs are forced to work harder from the pressure of the water, so it increases lung capacity, too. The benefits are enormous – and so are the weight loss and recovery success stories. Dublin has many fun aqua fitness opportunities, so what are you waiting for?

Lynne’s path was more about weight loss; she lost 50 pounds cycling and weight training and another 40 pounds swimming and water training. She spent months studying to get certified to teach water fitness classes, and her life has been transformed since then. “If we can do it, so can you,” Lynne says. The class ends but the support and advice continues. “Drive right past McDonald’s, don’t stop, your body is still working after exercise and it craves protein. No soda and no artificial sweeteners,” shouts Lisa, “and come try our Aqua Zumba class.”

Life Time Fitness www.lifetimefitness.com The perfect way to spend a beautiful summer evening is in the outdoor pool at Life Time Fitness, dancing and exercising to loud pop tunes and getting a great workout. I took the Monday 7 p.m. Hydro Training class and ran, kicked and jumped my way through a very tough but enjoyable hour. I recommend aqua shoes to protect your feet, a water bottle to hydrate and a modest swimsuit to avoid wardrobe malfunctions. The teachers, Lisa Wolfe and Lynne Elkins, are inspirational and passionate about health, nutrition, exercise and especially water. “There is so much power in what water can do for the body,” says Lisa. Twenty years ago, Lisa was diagnosed with fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis. Her doctor told her to get in the water to increase her range of movement and take the pressure off her joints – and her results have been staggering. A highly successful fitness instructor and manager, Lisa is also a motivational speaker for the Arthritis Foundation.

Metro V www.metrofitnessohio.com As “Good Golly Miss Molly,” played over the speakers during the 9 a.m. Aqua Motions class at Metro V, the 18 mostly senior men and women sang along as they jogged and kicked their way across the pool. My 13-year-old daughter, Catie, was with me, and within 2 minutes, one of the men was hiding behind a pillar and squirting her with a water toy. It was Joe Ryan, 84,

of Dublin, who has been doing water fitness for 20 years at Metro V with his wife, Margaret. “Splashing around in a pool is fun and good exercise,” says Joe. “We are also a very social group and we have coffee after class and meet for lunch once a month to solve all the world’s problems.” The 8:30 p.m. classes at Metro V are harder and geared more toward exercise enthusiasts and tri-athletes looking to cross-train without impact. They work on strength, speed and range of motion, sometimes with bungee cords tied around them to add resistance. “I’ve heard many people say they never knew they could work this hard in the water,” Water Director Sharon Buda says. Dublin Community Recreation Center www.dublinohiousa.gov Whether you prefer indoors or outdoors, deep water or a shallow pool, the DCRC and the Dublin Community Outdoor Pools have many choices for aqua fitness. “Most people who try water exercise classes love how refreshed they feel afterwards and don’t know what they would do without it,” says Courtney Chaffin, DCRC Aquatics Director. A water walking class is held in the lazy river of the leisure pool at the DCRC and uses the resistance of the current to build strength. Legs, Abs & Arms is a total body workout that can help define muscles without putting pressure on your joints. Deep and shallow water fitness classes work endurance, strength and flexibility while using flotation devices such as noodles and kickboards. The Arthritis Foundation Program helps decrease pain and stiffness while improving joint flexibility. Exercises for that program are gentler, performed in warm water, and instructors are certified through the Arthritis Foundation. Classes are also held outside at the Dublin South Pool through Aug. 23 at 8 and 11 a.m. You do not need a DCRC membership to attend any of the classes, and you can buy a package or pay for each class separately. So grab your bathing suit and aqua shoes and jump on in to a refreshing and challenging workout. www.dublinlifemagazine.com
