I am also very excited to introduce our new segments People's Person of the Month, a new segment highlighting the young and talented in PR, such as this month’s Farah Al-Qaderi and Dare 2B Different, a segment highlighting peoples rather unique hobbies or skills, such as Mohammad Al-Buloshi, Scuba Diver and Shark Feeding expert. Abdullah Al-Eissa Abla Abdullah Al-Eissa is the Manager of Training and Development at the Ministry of Education. It was almost years two ago when we first met with Abla when she was initiating a research campaign titled: “al7een Dorek” which was remarkably successful and she is now all set to take it to the next level. CityPages had the opportunity to meet her once again and know more about what she is trying to achieve through her new project. Can you please introduce yourself to our readers? I am Abla Abdullah Al-Eissa and currently the manager of training and development department at the Ministry of Education. Tell us about your education and specializations? I graduated from Kuwait University with a Bachelor’s degree in Kindergarten from the Faculty of Education and later got my Masters degree specializing in Curricula and Methods of Teaching. Can you elaborate more on your current role within the ministry? As the manager of Training and Development, I am responsible for developing the human resources in the Ministry of Education and as well as the organizational structure within the whole ministry. Can you briefly give us an idea of the new project? The development of education in all its aspects and various levels has become an urgent matter to achieve the vision of a better educational future for the Kuwaiti student. One of the key players in the development of that future is the school principal, and so the project focuses on enabling and building a strong educational leader that can implement that vision and contribute to the shared goal of leading effective educational and cultural changes in the community.

most appropriate ways to improve school performance and educational outcomes effectively. The New School Leadership and Management Pilot Program will test the effectiveness of the implementation of the following four school level innovations: 

Application of a new approach to school leadership and management

 Application of a new school-based organizational structure  Development and use of site-based School Improvement Plans (SIPs) to guide school improvement. Use of National Education Standards for the determination of professional growth and training The project will start in September 2013, in 36 schools representing the 6 districts. How successful was the last campaign “Al7een Dorek?” It was very successful, the participation was over 57,000 and the results were very helpful in creating the new concept for the public schools in Kuwait What is the duration of the project? The pilot program will start with the new academic school year, September 2013 until June 2014. What is your next plan or project?

How are the results of the previous campaign “AL7een Dorek” supporting the current pilot project? The previous campaign gave us a detailed analysis and diagnosis of the student and family perception of the educational services provided. The Feedback showed us clearly what needed to be changed in the organizational structure and the main roadblocks that were hindering the effectiveness of the educational services; therefore, we got a clearer picture of how to train and enhance the current working system to develop and provide a better quality of educational services. Can you explain the school pilot project? How was it developed and when is it going to start? The development of school administrations and professional development proiects is one of the many plans the Ministry of Education has, that aim to identify the www.citypageskuwait.com

The second phase of this project will be to gather feedback from the pilot program and implement it on all public schools. Furthermore, the program will reorganize the structure of the 6 districts to enable them to participate and have an active role in the improved educational services. Since you are so busy, how do you manage your family and professional life? Its a matter of time management and organization, thankfully, I think I was able to do it correctly. Your message for our readers? The projects being done by the Ministry of Education are first and foremost for

you, we hope that you cooperate and have an active role in the reformation of the school systems. Your feedback and advice is greatly appreciated, as we see this as a joint venture between the ministry and the student. What do you do to de-stress yourself? I try my best to enjoy life, and not stress myself out. That’s easier said than done! But I travel a lot, do yoga, and draw to achieve that balance... it’s that simple. Next Goal: Stress-Free Family Vacation! The days are getting longer, temperatures are rising and schools are almost over and one thing keeps crossing your mind: VACATION! After all you and the rest of your family have worked hard throughout the year and deserve some time off. You might be day dreaming of a beautiful sandy beach where you can soak up the sun; or wandering around somewhere exotic in the world finding out about a new culture, or may be your ideal vacation is to go shopping in one of the fashion capitals of the world. Whatever it is, you are officially turned on to vacation mode.

Well, I have some good news and some bad news for you and to make it easier I will start with the bad first. Unfortunately in our busy modern day life a stress-free-family vacation might sound like an urban legend or a myth! Good news? After reading this article, you will have the tools to make your myth a reality! 1. Plan together. The first step to a stress free vacation is to include everyone in on the planning. I know some parents are already shaking their heads but trust me on this one. Sometimes your kids might come up with an idea that is cheaper and less stressful than the one you already have! 2. Consider your kids ages. As you plan your family vacation, consider your kids ages and personalities. Plan for what the youngest in the family can really handle. If your youngest is over stimulated, tired and grumpy, then chances are, every one else will feel the same way too.

have a job that needs you to stay connected 24/7 even while on vacation, then unplug your self at the airport. Stop checking your email, turn off your phone and take a hiatus from all and any social networking. You will have plenty of time to reconnect and catch up once you are back, but for now, you are on vacation so take advantage of that excuse!

3. Set a budget. Before you start planning anything, decide on how much you are willing and can realistically spend. There is nothing worse than being on vacation and stressing about all the bills you have to pay once you get back. Do your research before hand and try to budget how much you will spend pair day. You and your finances will be much happier once your vacation is over.

5. Value your time together. We all get busy during the year and sometimes find it hard to reconnect with our families and that's why we go on vacations and create vacation time. Value your time with your family, talk, share and reconnect. This is the perfect time to unwind together and create lasting memories with your children. Make the most of your vacation, and value the time you are sharing with them.

4. Unplug. Unless you absolutely must and you

6. Relax! That's a no brainer but vacations can be hectic

with everyone wanting to see, go and try different things. The reality is that no matter how hard you try, you cannot do everything in one week. Try to do that and you will definitely be on your way to a stress-filled vacation. Do not try to plan out every minute of your vacation; instead keep some unplanned time which will make it easier for every one to relax and unwind. Better yet, having some unscheduled time opens up some space for spontaneity! Most important, once you set off on your next adventure with your family is to not sweat the small stuff. Vacations can be unpredictable and different cultures have their own way of doing things, which might be different than what you are used to. Instead of stressing over these tiny things, just let them go and enjoy this precious time with your family. Happy vacation wherever you go, from my family to yours ď Š May 2013

Creating New Kinships Through Breastfeeding When Dr. Anisa A-Jarallah first started volunteering to read stories and promote literature at the orphanage six years ago, she found her calling in life. Her heart was broken by the longing for attention, touch, and care that she could see in the eyes of the children she worked with. “The children are offered excellent medical care; in fact they are tended to by nurses. But the children are given no real emotions, no socializing moments, touch or care in the motherly sense,” says Dr. Anisa. “Lots of people and companies send these kids gifts and toys, but that’s not really what they want or need. They need human contact and relationships. I remember when I went to hug a child to calm him down, he didn’t know how to react to this gesture. He stiffened up!” baby with 5 fulfilling feeds when the baby is less than 2 years of age. The baby then religiously is considered to have a blood kinship to that family.” Dr. Anisa is anxious for all adopted infants to have the opportunity of a blood kinship with their adoptive family and to enjoy the advantages of being breastfed. She hopes that interested mothers who attend the discussion group on Sunday May 5 at BirthKuwait will benefit from the experience of mothers who have either found a family member or been able to successfully breastfeed their adopted infant herself. “Some moms who were successful in breastfeeding their adoptive baby had to work hard, for months in advance, to help their body be in the right state to produce the necessary milk by taking hormone treatments under the supervision of a Lactation Specialist or OBGYN. “ The unconditional support by The Breastfeeding Support Club and BirthKuwait affiliates has been key to the success of some of these cases.

This is why she established the “Kyan Voluntary Team.” Collaborating with the Family Nursery Department (of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor) she helps create programs for volunteer opportunities, cultural activities for the orphans and advocates for and creates awareness about adoption. When asked if there are any specific criteria in the volunteer candidates, she stressed that they “welcome everyone who finds in themselves the capability to love another human being.” After the “Color a Life” Campaign Dr. Anisa helped launch last year, adoption rates in Kuwait have improved dramatically. Recent articles (in the Kuwait Times and elsewhere) have highlighted the success of many adoptive families. However some families are www.citypageskuwait.com

hesitant to adopt because of concerns about disruption to the freedom of movement and intimacy shared within their home. Because of “Mahram”, adopted girls would need to cover around their male relatives, and female relatives would need to cover around an adopted boy. The only way to overcome these challenges is by creating a blood kinship with the child. “The only way to develop a kinship connection or bond,” says Dr. Anisa, “is by becoming a “milk mother” or a “milk-sibling” to someone in the family according to the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs. This means that the person breastfeeding the baby, either the adoptive mother or a woman with first degree kinship to the adoptive parents--- including the mother’s sister, aunt or daughter, daughter in-law, or niece, or similarly on the adoptive father’s side--- provides the

Mothers considering breastfeeding an adopted infant or mothers with any other concerns regarding breastfeeding challenges will also benefit from attending the workshop with Dr. Alia Abdin on Sunday May 19, 7pm at BirthKuwait. Dr. Alia is an experienced certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and Neonatologist at Sabah Hospital, committed to helping all moms breastfeed their babies.

The 20 million dollar fully paid capital company offers solutions that cover the entire customer supply chain from transport, printing and postal services, mail room management and tailor made customer solutions that focus on the management and transport of data (mail, documents, etc…). - Our commitment to our stakeholders and community made us appeal as a socially responsible organization that although our ultimate goal is the financial aspect, we also care to give to the communities we operate in. -Our expansion through credible Joint ventures, acquisitions and being part of international associations. Guidelines to young professionals who want to be at your level by your age? Impossible is nothing. With hard work, determination, and positive thinking you can accomplish those goals you believed were hard to attain. With dedication you will find yourself closing chapters and starting new dreams. What is the prevalence of CEOs with a strong financial background? By its very nature, the job description of a CEO means meeting the needs of employees, customers, investors, communities, and the law. A foundation in finance is an important building block for a career, which points to the fact that such background will help to create value for the company and to understand the company’s financial drivers, with developing the strategy and understanding the financial ramifications of business decisions.

TRAVELER’S DIARRHEA Traveler's diarrhea is the most common health problem a traveler encounters. Each year between 20%-50% of international travelers, an estimated 10 million people battle traveler's diarrhea. High-risk destinations for traveler's diarrhea include developing countries in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. So if you're visiting a country where the water may not be germ-free, you can take steps to preserve your vacation or business trip by preventing traveler's diarrhea. What is Traveler’s Diarrhea? As the name suggests it’s an illness affecting travelers. You typically develop traveler's diarrhea after ingesting food or water that's contaminated with organisms from feces. These organisms are infectious agents — including various bacteria, viruses and parasites It's possible that traveler's diarrhea may stem from the stress of traveling or a change in diet. Symptoms:

Diarrhea frequently occurs within the first week of travel, but may develop at any point, even after returning home. Most cases improve within one to two days without treatment and clear up completely within a week. However, you can have multiple episodes of traveler's diarrhea during one trip. Symptoms are: • Frequent loose stools — usually about 4 to 5 loose or watery bowel movements each day • Abdominal cramps • Nausea • Vomiting • Fever If you have severe dehydration, persistent vomiting, bloody stools or a high fever, or if your symptoms last for more than a few days, seek medical help. Treatments:

Traveler’s Diarrhea usually is a self-limiting disorder and often resolves without any specific treatment but it's important to stay hydrated with safe liquids, such as bottled water or canned juice. If diarrhea develops, the most important steps to take are preventing dehydration and replacing lost fluids, particularly in children. Ideally, fluid replacement utilizes solutions that contain the important minerals potassium, sodium, and calcium. The following are some suggestions: • A useful recipe for fluid replacement calls for two glasses of fluid: the first containing 8 oz. of fruit juice, 1/2 tsp. of honey or corn syrup, and a pinch of salt; the second filled with 8 oz. of purified or carbonated water and 1/4 tsp. of baking soda. The traveler should drink alternately from each glass until the thirst is quenched. www.citypageskuwait.com

• Parents with small children should bring commercial oral rehydration solutions such as Pedialyte or Gastrolyte etc. Products containing rice flour work slightly faster than others. • Children with diarrhea should not drink apple juice, colas, or sports beverages, because they do not contain the proper balance of salts and sugar. • Foods that help slow diarrhea include rice, bananas, apples, and tea. • Adding milk (but not soy milk) to these foods may help many children. In fact, eating yogurt that contains active lactobacilli cultures may have positive benefits. (However, yogurt drinks in developing countries may carry a high risk for contamination.) If you don't seem to be improving quickly, you can turn to several medications to help relieve symptoms. Anti-motility agents: (they slow down your bowel) such as Imodium provide prompt but temporary relief by reducing muscle spasms in your gastrointestinal tract, slowing the transit time through your digestive system and allowing more time for absorption. They aren't recommended for infants or people with fever or bloody diarrhea, as they can delay clearance of the infectious organisms and make the illness worse. Also, stop using anti-motility agents after 48 hours if you have abdominal pain or your signs or symptoms worsen and your diarrhea continues. In such cases, see a doctor. Bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol): This over-thecounter medication can decrease the frequency of your stools and shorten the duration of your illness. However, it isn't recommended for children, pregnant women or people who are allergic to aspirin. Antibiotics: If you have severe symptoms or three or more loose stools within eight hours, a doctor may prescribe a threeto five-day course of antibiotics. Prevention:

The general rule of thumb when traveling to another country is this: Boil it,

cook it, peel it or forget it. Here are some important tips: • Don't drink or brush your teeth with water from the tap, and avoid ice unless you know it was made with purified water. • Make sure the seal is intact on any bottle of purified water before you drink. • Seek restaurants with a reputation for safety. Even then, avoiding raw foods, as well as fresh fruits or vegetables that do not need to be peeled, is advised. • Heated food should be hot to the touch and eaten promptly. • Beware of sliced fruit that may have been washed in contaminated water. • Don't buy food from street vendors. • Peel all fresh fruits and vegetables yourself. • Certain fruits, such as strawberries, raspberries, and grapes should never be considered safe, even when washed. • Avoid dairy products. • Avoid raw or undercooked meat and fish. • Avoid cold toppings and sauces -even bottled sauces on tables. • Avoid fruit juices, fresh salads, and open buffets.

Are You NOSE Worthy! Aesthetic Rhinoplasty or the common "nose job" is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in Kuwait One of the most common cosmetic complaints in Kuwait is from patients who do not like the size or shape of their nose. Demand for aesthetic rhinoplasty (nose surgery) of the Arabic nose is very high among both male and female patients. Most patients have disliked their noses since childhood. Childhood bullying from peers as well as even comments from family and friends regarding a person's nose can affect them for life, instilling a feeling that their nose is unusual and unattractive. It can have a devastating effect on a person's self esteem. When it comes to the nose most patients aren't willing to settle for almost – perfect. A high percentage of the patients come in with requests for extreme reshaping of the nose. It is important to explain that the best results of rhinoplasty are the surgeries that give a more natural appearance and are not overly obvious to others that a person has had a rhinoplasty done. In today's society patients often come in asking for a certain celebrities nose and often bring pictures with them. It is essential to explain to a patient whether the nose she wants will actually suit her face and facial proportions. New methods and techniques make the procedure more efficient, reduce healing time and allowing for excellent results. Patients can return to work and regular life in a very short time. Some surgeries require small incisions at the base of the nose, as well others can be done only internally with no external incisions at all. Most patients find recovery easier than they expected and swelling that remains is usually minimal after the first month, however some swelling can continue for up to six months. Occasionally I receive patients who have had previous rhinoplasty surgery elsewhere and want even more reduction in the size or change in the shape of the nose. It is possible to repeat a rhinoplasty if a patient decides she or he wants an even smaller nose. It is important to discuss in initial consultation with the patient what he or she wants exactly to avoid the need for any further revisions. Patients need to be sure they want to change their look, as what they may feel is an unattractive nose may just be imperfect, and quite attractive to others. However, ultimately the patient will decide to have surgery if the appearance of the nose has emotionally bothered them over the years. We have patients of all ages having rhinoplasty surgery. Communication with your surgeon and realistic expectations ensure for a perfect result for both surgeon and patient. May 2013

Ocular Sunscreen Your Eyes Can Also Get A Sunburn

In our last article, you read about the exposure of the eye to high energy visible (HEV) light, also known as blue light and its risks. It is just as important to protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays. Not only is your skin at risk from the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays but also your eyes. Continued exposure to the sun’s UV rays can cause damage to your eyes, leading to cataract, macular degeneration and some conjunctival abnormalities, as well as eyelid cancer. UV rays are categorized into 3 groups: UVA, UVB and UVC. The most harmful are UVC rays but luckily these rays are absorbed by the ozone layer. UVB rays are only partially blocked by the ozone layer and can still reach us, thus giving us a sun tan. They are moderately harmful and can often cause pterygium. The most dangerous rays are UVA rays. They can penetrate the cornea eventually causing cataracts and macular degeneration. A UV Index map displays the risk of exposure to UV rays. Kuwait is close to the equator, where UV levels are much higher. The purple color represents extreme exposure to UV rays. As you

UV INDEX 0-2

No danger to the average person

3-5

Little risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure

6-7

High risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure

8-10

Very high risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure

11+

Extreme risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure

can see, Kuwait is at extreme risk to UV rays. The intensity of UV rays is amplified by reflective surfaces, such as sand and water and can almost be doubled when reflected from these surfaces. Everyone is at risk to overexposure to UV rays. People who spend a lot of time outdoors have a higher risk of eye problems related to the sun. Even if you are just walking from the parking lot to the supermarket it is important to wear your sunglasses. Children need sun protection more than adults. A child’s crystalline lens is much clearer than that of an adult therefore allowing more UV rays to penetrate the eye. Children also tend to spend more time outdoors than adults. UV damage is cumulative and will contribute to eye disease in adulthood. It is very important to note that sunglasses are not only meant to look good but also to protect your eyes. The ideal pair of sunglasses protects the eye by blocking 100% of the UVA and UVB rays. Sunglasses that wrap around offer the best protection especially in the sea or high altitudes by limiting the amount of light that can enter your eye from above and the periphery. The color and darkness of the sun lenses don’t increase the blockage of UV rays. Polarized lenses are a bonus, since they reduce the glare which is reflected off the road and water. However, they do not necessarily protect the yes more than other good quality sunglasses. Prescription eyewear and contact lenses also both offer UV protection. It is ideal to combine these with sunglasses to fully protect your eyes. Sports sun eyewear can protect your eyes even while enjoying the outdoors. Brimmed hats can also offer some protection in addition to sunglasses. Nowadays many retail clothing shops sell sunglasses, for adults and children likewise. Don’t be fooled by these sunglasses. Make sure to look if the sunglasses are labeled with UV protection. Saying that, the price of sunglasses doesn’t automatically represent the quality of the lens and UV protection. There are other factors involved such as the actual material of the frame or extra lens options and coatings, which can make your sun-wear experience a pleasant one. Your eye care professionals will make sure to provide you with the best advice on protecting your eyes from UV rays. Visit your favorite optical shop for the best lens technology to protect your eyes and the latest fashionable sunglasses.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED Q:

I am a 22 years old male and I want to ask you if laser hair removal will be effective for me too or is it only for girls?

Laser hair Removal ( LHR) is effective in both male and female after puberty.Male can also opt for laser hair removal for unwanted hair on their body.

Q: I did laser for my chin and got brown spots. I am really worried. What should I do and why did I get these spots?

Q: I am a girl and my age is 15 yrs. I want to do laser for my arms but my mom doesn’t agree because some of her friends told her it is not good for people under40. Is this true? Am I too young for laser? Usually doctors do not recommend laser at a very early age especially during puberty. It is effective during this age also but the results are not satisfactory from patient view.

Electrolysis is a procedure where unwanted hair from the body are removed by passing a mild electric current with a needle to the hair root.It is painful, slow and time consuming. Compared to it laser is fast, painless, effective and less time consuming.

Q:

Q: I

My friend told me that laser hair treatment can cause cancer. Is this true?

Some patients with a very sensitve skin do get some pigmentation problems after the LHR do not cause any cancer or any laser. You should consult your dermatologist systemic side effects. for these spots. He will recommend some skin lightening creams or some skin Q: Can laser hair removal be used for treatment for the spots.Next time prior to sensitive areas? LHR is very safe and effective for sensitive laser treatment go for a spot test. areas

have strong black hair on my legs may be because I shave my legs please tell me if laser is good for me and will it be permanent plus how many session will I need before they are completely gone?

LHR is very effective for patients with strong black hair and ingrown hair.Depending on your age and response to the laser treatment you may require 4 to 6 sessions.

Q:

Q: Normally I do waxing but now I want to remove my arms and legs hair by laser. But I don’t know how long the hair should be I mean how long should I wait and not do waxing before I go to a laser clinic?

LHR requires multiple sessions.Your sister can shave if the trip is of short duration. If she is planning a long stay she can always opt for a nearby laser centre instead of waxing.

You should stop waxing before 2 weeks of your laser appointment. When you go for laser treatment ask the doctor to check if the hair growth is suitable for laser or not.

{Dare 2B Different!}

For the Love of Sharks Mohammad Al Buloshi is our first candidate for our new segment "DARE 2B DIFFERENT". "Dare 2B Different" is all about standing out by doing things different than the majority. Mohammad has dedicated his time to the study of scuba diving, baited shark feeding and under-water photography. He also puts sharks into a trance-like state. We were eager to know how he came into diving and his views on the sometimes controversial shark feeding. We think you'll adore him as much as we do. We were lucky enough to chat with Mohammad recently and know of his experiences with sharks and under-water photography.

Please introduce yourself to our readers? I am Coach Mohammed Al Buloshi from Coral Dive Center in Khalidiya specialized in scuba diving, shark feeding, and underwater photography. What was it like the first time you dived with so many sharks? Of course I was feeling scared and there was a suspsense as I never knew how it would feel or look like. But the experience was amazing when you see sharks circling around you and eating the food that I had with me. Where did you have your favourite shark diving experience? My first experience was in the Bahamas Islands. What kind of training did you undergo for scuba diving and shark feeding and from where? I began scuba diving in 1997 and then got certified for it. Later on specialized in undersea photography and then learnt about sharks and shark diving and shark feeding. How did you get into shark photography? Did the photography come first or the sharks?

What advice would you give someone wanting to work as a shark photographer? Its an amazing hobby but get prepared for it and get all the training before you start trying it about the kind of sharks you wish to photograph. The training is available at our center. What are your other hobbies besides scuba diving? Firstly, everything related to sea, swimming, fishing, etc. Other than that I was very fond of Arabian Horses and Horse Riding. What kind of photography equipment do you use? It varies, but I currently use a Canon. How often and where do you go for your scuba diving and shark feeding expeditions? I dont have a specific place but whenever I get an opportunity I make use of it. I am however looking forward to my near trips to South Africa and Sudan. Your message for our team at CityPages magazine?

I was always fond of photography and later when I started scuba diving, I took my photography hobby with me and took lots of experience in undersea photography until I mastered it.

Firstly, thank you for selecting me your first candidate for "Dare 2B Different" and I love your magazine. Secondly, Try Scuba Diving as it is not impossible and is for all ages.

Do you think shark feeding has an impact on shark behaviour?

I believe this is an expensive hobby and skill. Does anyone sponsor your trips?

No I don't think so. It's obviously pretty well known that sharks can kill humans and so they have a pretty bad reputation. Is that fair? Should we be trying to do more to save sharks? The goal of the shark is not human beings as we see in commercial films. The shark are actually assuming human beings as seals because when humans swim, they follow the same patter and it looks to the shark as if its a seal. Only a very few types of sharks target human beings. www.citypageskuwait.com

Yes indeed, It is a very expensive hobby and I am currently self-funding my trips. However, through your magazine, I would like to request companies and organizations in Kuwait to sponsor me for this lovely skill. How can someone reach you to know more about you and scuba diving orshark feeding? I can be contacted by e-mail: Eezee32@gmail.com or follow my Instagram: moalbuloshi

FittaMamma

pregnancy workout tips Leading pregnancy activewear specialists FittaMamma are keen to inspire women that exercise during pregnancy is not only safe but beneficial – and they’ve recently launched a range of stylish and supportive fitness and leisurewear so mums-to-be can look great and feel comfortable whilst they exercise. The FittaMamma range has been specially designed for mums-to-be who want to stay fit, keep active and look good through their pregnancy and work well once your baby is born too. Uniquely designed to provide all over support the clothes make any activity from yoga to running comfortable and enjoyable. FittaMamma say, ‘Maintaining fitness whilst you’re pregnant helps both physically and psychologically, helping to reduce many common complaints such as tiredness, varicose veins and swollen ankles. Regular exercise can help alleviate discomfort such as lower back pain and heartburn as well as preparing your body for labour.

• Avoid exercises that involve you lying on your front after the first trimester and avoid lying on your back after 12 weeks

Even a modest amount of exercise during pregnancy will release those feel good endorphins, lift your mood and make it easier to sleep, reducing stress, anxiety and depression.’

• Ask your doctor or midwife before you start any regular exercise routines or if you have any concerns.

FittaMamma prenatal fitness expert Lucie Brand has put together her top tips for exercising during pregnancy. She says ‘It’s easy to incorporate exercise into a busy lifestyle without the need for special equipment or a visit to the gym – even gentle exercise is a great way to maintain your pregnancy health. My pregnancy exercise plans are simple but they really do help!’ These mini guides are taken from Lucie’s pre and postnatal guide the ‘3-plan, your complete pregnancy and post-natal exercise plan’. Before you start: • Listen to your body – if your workout feels too intense slow down or stop. Don’t overdo it, if you haven’t trained before build up slowly, maybe 15-20 minutes a day to begin with. • Pregnancy isn’t a good time to start playing tennis or join a netball team – but that doesn’t mean you can’t take up swimming, walking or join a yoga class • Remember to stay hydrated – keep a water bottle handy • Stay cool! Pregnant women can overheat quite easily so exercise outdoors if possible and wear moisturewicking clothes • Carry on talking! It’s not a good idea to exercise beyond the level where you’re too tired to speak. • Dress comfortably. Stretchy well-fitting exercise clothes that support your bump and breasts - such as the FittaMamma range - are ideal www.citypageskuwait.com

• Stay fuelled – don’t exercise on an empty stomach and keep a few energy snacks handy - a banana, dried fruit or nuts are ideal

• Make sure you warm up and cool down Lucie Brand’s Mini FittaWorkout These easy warm up exercises are great before you start any cardio activity and work equally well to cool down afterwards: Legs and ankles: Stand on leg, raise your other foot off the floor and rotate your ankle. Raise your knee higher flexing back and forwards. Repeat with the other leg Hip and body: With your feet hip distance apart and hands on hips, rotate in both directions. Put your hands on your head and gently swing your body from side to side. Warm up your arms: Spread your arms wide, flex your wrists before circling backwards and forwards, crossing your arms in front of your body. Shrug your shoulders to loosen, reach up to the sky with each hand in turn stretching over to the side. Increase the pace: • Get stepping from side to side, adding in a knee lift or curl with the opposite leg. March on the spot, lifting your knees and swinging your arms • Lunge to each side, pushing alternate arms across your body • Half jacks, with your arms coming in and out as you step each leg in turn • Tap your heels forward alternately, bending the other knee and swinging your arms forward

• Jog on the spot, bringing your knees up – alternate with jogging with your heels to bottom For full workout routines click on www.fittamamma. com, where you can download activity guides, yoga routines, recipes and the full range of FittaMamma activewear as well as Lucie Brand’s book ‘3-plan, your complete pregnancy and post-natal exercise plan’.

FIBO 2013: The glitz, glamour and socialfitness. I needed a fork to poke myself. Standing in the buffet queue at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cologne, Germany ; it was a mental toss-up whether or not to opt for the smoke salmon slices with my egg whites for my morning consumption when Jay Cutler passes by and says hi to me. Yes, folks. The 4x Mr.Olympia and 3x Arnold Classic bodybuilding champ making conversation with the little personal trainer all the way from Ktown. I know in this instance Paula Abdul’s quote of “everything is always a little surreal,” seems befitting for this occasion but still, I felt that I needed reality check (preferably with some sharp cutlery) to ensure that I wasn’t daydreaming. My boss, Yves Preissler, and myself are in Germany this time around for the FIBO convention held in Cologne as opposed to last year’s fair in Essen by Dusseldorf. One of the biggest fitness and health conventions in the world, this 4-day expo started in 1985 and gives fitness professionals and enthusiasts-alike an opportunity to see the latest unveilings from some of the biggest brands in fitness. Says FIBO Director, Olaf Tomscheit, “Demand for training equipment for the use in health-oriented fitness centers as well as in physiotherapist and medical practices has seen an enormous growth. With its large number of exhibitors from this segment, FIBO offers the largest overview of the field worldwide.” With 9 huge exhibition halls housing this event, Tomscheit has a point. Making our way through the vast halls from 9am to 5pm; it was interesting to note some of the emerging fitness trends and the direction it seems to be heading from here onwards: - The emphasis on fitness seems to be more geared towards functional training as opposed to solely aesthetics (ie. This training will help me cope with my day-to-day tasks and not just have me looking pretty). -The hype for most equipment for functional training seems to be very crossfitoriented. Hence almost every gym brand had a functional training “box” to exhibit.

www.citypageskuwait.com

-We seem to heading into an intertwining era of fitness and social media. Hence it’s a likelihood you will be working out with your phone if you’re not already doing so. Out of the haute couture of fitness brands seen, Technogym seems to be the pioneer leading these changes of integrating social media with fitness. In FIBO 2012, Technogym launched its Wellness Cloud, an online web- based application. With the use of its Wellness Key (it looks like a small portable USB device), clients could experience a fitness training session by themselves that’s personal on the Technogym machines as the Key would record and store one’s fitness info on the machines used and subsequently track the individual’s progress. At FIBO 2013, Technogym unveiled its Artis line of strength and cardio equipment which now comes integrated with more social media options. For example, you can now use your iPhone or Smartphone with its technology to properly know how to use the kit, record your reps and weights used and even compete with your friends by posting your fit results on social media apps such as Facebook and Twitter. The Artis treadmill for example, now comes equipped with an in-build camera so that you can even Skype while you run/brisk walk. Says Ruggero Ottogalli, the area manager for Technogym MEA, “Fitness in the Middle East is now undergoing major changes. I’ve been in the industry for the past 3 years and have seen the shift from solid bodybuilding principles to a more functional method of training. Here at Technogym, we listen to our end-users and try to find fitness solutions that would inspire them to work out in a practical, engaging and fun way.” Fitness innovations aside, FIBO was also a great venue to meet, greet and rub shoulders with some of the biggest names in the industry such as Branch Warren,

Zuhair Murad The Middle East’s most beloved dress designer Zuhair Murad, the Middle East’s beloved fashion designer visited Kuwait as an official Guest of Honor the first Kuwaiti Arab Woman Awards event organized by the ITP group. I was lucky enough to steal him away for a one on one discussion as I have always wanted to meet this remarkable talented legend and it was a pleasant surprise to see how kind and humble he is; who would have thought, considering he is one of the most accomplished of the home grown talent who’ve made a name for themselves successfully on an International level. Born in Lebanon in 1971, Zuhair loved to paint portraits when he was younger, and realized very early on at age 14 that his calling was related to art and spared no time traveling to Paris to study fashion design at the Syndical Chamber of Couture. Upon completion of his studies, he returned to Beirut to open his own shop, until 1999 where he showed his first catwalk collection in Rome, to great accolades from the International fashion community. Zuhair’s dresses have been worn extensively by the fashion pack of Hollywood on the red carpet and beyond, such as Beyonce, who is a firm and long standing fan, Shakira, Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera, Fergie, Kirsten Stewart of the Twilight saga, and his most favorite to dress, Jennifer Lopez. His designs are worn by Saudi Royalty, beauty queens, and super models alike. His Haute Couture is regularly featured in magazines such Vogue, Instyle, Lucia Se Casa, and Town & Country to name a few. www.citypageskuwait.com

The man behind ZAIN’s PR,

Waleed Khaled Al-Khashti His character, hard work, passion and dedication have led him to his dream job. His motivation, his father and family, to be the best he can be as the Corporate Communication & Relation Department Manager at ZAIN.

Please tell us about your education: My father was the Kuwaiti Counselor in London, so from kindergarten until High School I studied in London. During my last year of high school I came back to Kuwait and graduated. Then I went to the Kuwait University to study Economics as a major and my minor was Political science. Later I took a MiniMBA in Project Management from George Washington University in 2004.

How did your career develop after you graduated? I have extensive experience in Sales, as I was into Sales before. From there I worked in Customer Care and moved to Corporate Communications and Public Relations. I have been working at ZAIN for 15 years now, since 1988. I started as a beginner and got promoted to higher positions until I reached my current position as a Department Manager of the Corporate Communication and Relations.

Please tell us of your professional achievements till date? The achievement I am most proud of in my current job,is having done ZAIN CITY in 2010. It was one of the biggest exhibitions in the history of Kuwait, in terms of the number of people who visited us, which were half-million visitors per week. It was successful because we did very good and had effective PR activities for it. We had lots of attractive offers from the company and we had the support of a lot of media, which made a big noise in Kuwait. Besides, there are many other achievements as I have done many new initiatives in regard to Public Relations. Most importantly, three years ago, I initiated a small team for CSR activities. CSR was being done before at the company but then, there was no focused team handling it. I also initiated several projects related to supporting our youth and I am continuously doing it, as it is my main goal to support the Kuwaiti youth.

Who or what are your influences? My father is my biggest influence. My father is a great PR person. In fact, he has always been my mentor, since he was a diplomat and used diplomacy at work. He is my great friend and influence. He daily asks me about my job. www.citypageskuwait.com

{Interview Entertainment } /Book Releases} Also my colleagues are a great influence, since I have been working at ZAIN for 15 years and it's a very friendly environment.

Do you have a favorite travel destination? Why? I love to travel to London. But, I also like to travel to quiet places to just relax and close my phone. Why London? Firstly because I lived there for a long time and secondly, I see many Kuwaiti friends in London. It's a good place to socialize outside Kuwait and talk about things away from work. I also love the weather of London.

What tools could you not live without? Relations! If I have a day when my phone is not ringing at least 50 times, I think there is something wrong. I am used to being a people's person. I love people from everywhere. Socializing is a very important part of me.

What are your personal goals? My goal in terms of work is to be in an executive position and to do something for Kuwait; make a difference in the society and Kuwait. Of course, ZAIN has a big hand in it and I am always looking for a chance to do something for Kuwait and make it a successful country. Most importantly, on a personal front, I always like to be a great person and a great leader to my family and my team. The most important is the leadership part, which I think I have a lot in my character since I was a young child. As the saying says, "You are born to be a leader." Since, I was young I was always acting as a leader. I always used to be the father on child games, I always liked to boss around. It's all in the character and to be a good leader it takes a lot of effort and it's very hard, because we have to feel what others feel, and I think it takes a lot of my time and effort.

Do you play any sports? No, not at all. Firstly, because I don't have time. I know I am supposed to do sports, but I don't get the time as I leave work very late. Secondly, I have to visit events almost every day and thirdly, whenever I get any time, I like to spend it with my family. Because, to be very honest, I think I am not giving enough time to my family. So, whatever time I can get I like to spend it with them, but I know its not enough. I owe them a lot more;besides, I am a member of many NGOs and societies, which again take my time.

www.citypageskuwait.com

What do you do to de-stress yourself from your busy work?

work that we have to plan our next day, which is wrong because I believe I should not think of work at home. The problem is I have my self-motivation part, which I cannot leave, and work is my passion.

What kind of music do you listen? I like Jazz and relaxing music. I listen to Arabic music, but usually during my relaxing time.

What do you like most about your job? Throughout my life, I have been a character that likes relationships and people. I am very friendly with all people. My life before joining ZAIN was very social. I go around all Diwaniyas in Kuwait. I make sure I am in all the events. I like to visit people. I like to experience different cultures and I love to travel. I have many friends all over the world. In Kuwait, I had my own Diwaniya before and I used to have friends coming and visiting and now I visit at least two Diwaniyas every single day, besides events. I am in relations with every person in the society, and that's the best thing about my job. The other thing is that being at ZAIN, my full loyalty is to ZAIN as I have been serving for 15 years with full dedication. I love the company. ZAIN is my second home. In fact, I stay at my work more than my home. The most important thing I tell everyone about my job is, "You love what you do." So, if you love your job, you will be happy and do it very well.

The only way I de-stress myself is by travelling. I love to travel to quiet places. My best place is London.

Do you have a message for aspiring students in PR and Marketing?

Something you never forget to do before going to bed?

I always say this is the most creative job. In PR you can do what you think. You are free to think and do it and that's what makes it different from others.Relationships with people are a good tool that could be used in a right or wrong way.

Put my tasks for tomorrow's work. We have so much

{Interview} Most importantly, always smile. In PR you always have to wear a smile on your face and have a nice character. If you do not have these you can never be a good PR person. However, there is always the bad thing about it. There are no certain or fixed working hours. This is the only job in the company where you do not have fixed timings. You have to be at work at different hours and work is the main objective of this field. When I first took this job, my father said to me, "This field is like a sword, it can either take you up or it can kill you." The message here is that,as I am the spokesman for the company, and every word is very important, it could be used either for you or against you. So, we have to be very careful with what we say.

According to you, what are the three keys to success? My first advise or something I always say and believe in is, that if you want to do something, you can do it. There is nothing impossible. Secondly, always be creative. Always think out of the box. The third and the most important thing is you always have to take risks. Earlier I didn't because I always used to take time before doing anything. But now, as my job requires it, I have to initiate new things, and so there is always a risk and if you don't take that risk, you will never succeed. Many of the initiatives that I have taken had lots of risk, but I took the risk and they were all successful. Another important think or my quote that I would like to say is that "Never look for positions and you will grow." The greatest mover is yourself. I always tell this to my friends, my family and my colleagues. Never wait for people to tell you to learn something, you have to always go and learn it yourself. I love what I do at work. I have a great team, which I really appreciate. I am always with them as my family. One of my biggest achievements has been to have a great team that you can consider family.

What are some of your other experiences? I have been a team guide for tourists. Ten years ago I did this twice. I took a group from Europe all around the world, because travelling is my passion. So, I have a lot of experience in travelling and I am always a point of reference for all my friends when it comes to travelling. I have done a few workshops during my previous role as Customer Care. I attended a big conference in Dubai and spoke in front of many international companies and I have done many workshops on PR for the youth. The biggest crowd I have spoken to was last Ramadan, at the Indian community, where I addressed a crowd of around ten thousand people.

Your message for us at CityPages magazine? First of all, I would like to thank you for the opportunity www.citypageskuwait.com

I always like the media that is pro-active and I think your magazine is one of the pro-active magazines. I see it around at most of the places

to interview me for your magazine. I always like the media that is pro-active and I think your magazine is one of the pro-active magazines. I see it around at most of the places and at the same time you need to do more media and marketing for your magazine. You are a media yourself, but you need more media and marketing because you deserve to be more known.

Can you summarize yourself? To summarize, I love my work. Every morning I am passionate to come to work. Being everywhere and being aware of everything is very important. Every morning I read my newspaper and at the same time I am very active on Twitter and Instagram and other social media tools as it is part of my job. I daily watch the evening news, because I get to know all that happened in the day in Kuwait. I always team my team about delegation. I always like to delegate to my team. My message to my team during our last meeting was "I learn from the smallest employee from my team" and that the learning part never stops. I am proud to say that ZAIN has made me what I am today. The actual accelerator for Waleed is ZAIN and the only way I can return it back to ZAIN, is to do an efficient and successful job, and make ZAIN's name always shine. It is my job to expose ZAIN's name to the public as much as I can. ZAIN is always part of the society.

In the roomy cinema; guests chatted and eagerly awaited the movie, echoing enthusiastically the sentiment that’Burger King makes the best burgers’, even the Whopper was mentioned amidst laughs and shouts. Watching Iron Man 3 on the big screen is a marvelous prize from Burger King. The movie lived up to its hype, 3D effects made the explosions, fighting and action on the screen so very intense. The drama was an interesting human element to a character that was viewed as an invincible mechanical force. The comedic timing by Tony Stark helped to lighten the mood during the transition between action and suspense. At the end of the movie, all the guests were very happy with the evening’s event. It was well-planned, and everyone had a splendid time. They couldn’t wait to return home to recommend the movie to their friends and boast about the privilege of being Burger King’s special guest. The Iron man’s exclusive screening is part of Burger King’s marketing initiative to bring one of the hottest superheroes to Kuwait. From April 18 to 20, Burger King held a series of interactive events, where participants enjoyed a range of fun activities. There was face painting, competitions and music programs. Participants who won the competitions were awarded great gifts. The highlight of the event was the appearance of the Iron Man character, who greeted and posed with fans for the cameras. This character really resembled Tony Stark in the movie.

The initiative aims to emphasize Burger King’s approach that it doesn’t miss out on opportunities. Burger King saw the action and thrill of the world of movies and wanted to give an exciting experience to its customers, particularly the ones who love Iron Man. Burger King wants to continue to interact with the youth and customers, and upgrade the fun in their entertainment like the Iron Man 3. Angelos Arampatzis, Head of Marketing, revealed that the brand knows in advance about upcoming developments in the major movie houses. They try to find a fit to their profile that would work well with their consumer base and can be communicated dynamically with a passion. He said, “This time it was Iron Man 3 and we chose right, I would say. The response was phenomenal not only to our promotion but to our Iron Man 3 Three Day Visit plus the Avant Premiere showing. Considering the thousands that showed up, it indicates that we are in touch with the pulse of our customers and connect with people who like to have a good time at Burger King and at the Movies. Mr. Arampatzis added, “We designed premium items that were geared mostly toyoung adults and children. The idea was to include a range of fun giveaways like a bag, sports cups, key chains, dog tags, posters etc., with any Burger King Go Mega Meal. It helped us give a personal touch to our offers and approach towards our customers. We ran out of stock quickly due to the immense positive response to the campaign.”

All you have to do is hook up this GSM chip-equipped monitor to an app on your phone, and you can pinpoint its exact location. (w) www.trakdot.com

9. Roku Streaming Stick

Speaking of charging your technology on the road, it’s always annoying when you run out of juice between backpacker hostels. After the user selects a video, the app sends the relevant source URL to the dongle—a Wi-Fi receiver—which then streams the video itself.

Kyocera Torque Samsung T9000 Four-Door Refrigerator

With the Kyocera Torque, callers will be able to hear their conversations anywhere—even in loud rooms. In place of the phone’s speaker, an actuator sends tiny vibrations through soft tissue in the face and directly to the eardrum.

The lower-right side of the T9000 four-door refrigerator can switch from fridge to freezer. To convert the six-cubic-foot section, a user selects the mode on an LCD screen, signaling two compressors and three evaporators to adjust the temperature and humidity levels accordingly.

SmartSound Case The SmartSound Case amplifies a smartphone speaker without sapping any battery power. A flap unfolds from the back of the plastic case and, similar to a horn, passively increases sound by up to 10 decibels. It also doubles as a kickstand.

SteelSeries Apex The Apex keyboard will improve a gamer’s response times. Background software tracks a player’s keystrokes and generates a visual map that can be used to reprogram the keyboard. For example, by moving keys that are frequently pressed in tandem closer to one another, a player could speed up keystrokes.

Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra >15,000 gauss The Seamaster Aqua Terra is the first watch completely resistant to magnetism. Engineers made the watch from nonferrous metals, which are unaffected by magnetic fields that can interfere with accuracy. It can resist more than 1.5 Tesla—about the strength of an MRI machine.

Geospace Fly Max Football The 4.4-ounce foam Fly Max Football can soar 100 yards. A hollow center allows air to move through the ball, minimizing resistance. And adjustable fins increase spin and therefore distance.

THX Tune-Up

Moen MotionSense

THX’s tune-up app simplifies surround-sound setup. After connecting a smartphone to a stereo receiver, a user enters the number of speakers in his system. The app then displays the ideal speaker layout and sends test tones to each one to make sure it’s in the right spot.

The MotionSense is the first kitchen faucet that cooks don’t have to touch to operate. Motion directly above a battery-powered infrared sensor on the top of the faucet turns the water on; the same motion turns it off.

Sony Walkman Sports MP3 Player The waterproof Walkman Sports MP3 Player will play for eight hours at depths up to 6.5 feet. The earbuds contain both the player and battery, and an adjustable elastomer band holds them in place while swimming.

Korkers KGB with Vibram OmniTrax The KGB boot adapts to varying terrains. It has swappable rubber soles, which stay in place with plastic teeth and have different treads for rock, snow, or ice.

{People's Person of the Month}

Farah Al-Qaderi What is your current job title? I am doing Marketing and PR for Victoria's Secret, Dubai. I'm looking after 8 markets across the Middle East. What is a day at work like for you? A lot of Starbucks, smiling, and running around. Every day is filled with new ideas, exciting tasks, and a lot of chatting! Please tell us about your education? I studied at the American University of Kuwait, taking on a double major, Marketing and Finance. I'm also currently pursuing my MBA degree at the American University in Dubai. After work I have night classes, pretty hectic but I like to keep myself busy. Can you tell us a little about your career path? Well, my first job was at the ecommerce department, Al Shaya. I learned so much about online marketing and customer behavior on the world wide web. One year later I got offered a dream job… Marketing & PR for Victoria's Secret. The thing was that it wasn’t in Kuwait.. it was in Dubai. I was super excited but terrified at the same time. I panicked at first, I didn’t know how my family would take it and was worried about moving out and living alone. As I was deciding whether to take on the job or not, another amazing job offer came about in Kuwait. This did not make things any easier. After being interviewed by them, I left it in god's hands. If I get accepted I would stay and if not then that’s a sign to move to Dubai. I got the phone call a week later and they asked me to apply again in 3 months. It was a big relief as I finally knew which road to take. On top of that, I had already applied for my MBA at various universities and the American University in Dubai happened to be one of which I was accepted in. So it was really meant for me to move here.. and I don’t regret it at all. What do you enjoy most about working in the PR field? All the different interesting people you meet! I enjoy integrating with people in all sorts of fields, cultures and backgrounds. What I enjoy most is the outcome. PR isn't just about socializing, it's about putting yourself out there and expecting results. Publicity is extremely important. A good PR story is definately more effective than a front page ad! its like world of mouth. You'd try the salon your friend recommended but not the one on the highway billboard! Right? And I have to admit, I love all the events I get invited to. VIP openings, new collection launches, fashion shows, it's all so

entertaining and at the same time, you're doing your job! how cool's that? What are your PR strengths? I'm a chatterbox! and so if my job is to chat up a crowd, then I'll go all the way! I love to laugh and making the person in front of you smile will get you points straight away. One compliment does miracles. What qualities make you the People’s Person? I'm a social butterfly I guess! but I really think about what to say and what not. I think ahead before taking action. I ask myself, how will this move benefit me? Sometimes you won't get an immediate result. I take certain actions that I know will not benefit me now, but will do so in the long run. What are your weaknesses? I hate this question! I guess I sometimes underestimate myself and I need a push every now and then. Thank god for my supportive family and friends that are always there to slap some confidence back in! What do you do to de-stress and stay motivated? To de-stress there's no question - off to the spa! And to stay motivated, I remember my goals, my dreams, why I am here in the first place. Always remember, no one will make your dreams come true but yourself and if the there's no bumps on the road, its going nowhere! How do you respond to criticism? Well I believe there are two kinds of criticism. The first kind is from people who care for you; co-workers, family, friends. To that I say take it like an adult, learn from your mistakes and benefit from them. No one's perfect so don’t hold grudges and be ignorant, you won't do yourself or anyone else any good. But criticism from haters? I say ignore them. People who try to bring you down are already beneath you. How does social media fit into your work. The media has shifted greatly to the social online world and you need to respond to change to survive. I keep a good close relationship with bloggers, tweeters and instagramers. I really do believe that social media is taking over the world of communication. You'll reach a whole lot more of your targeted customers over one instagram post than an ad on TV! its fascinating how media changes constantly.. I wonder what next defines our communication roots.

S ’ E L P PEO SON PERHE MONTH OF T

How you organize, plan, and prioritize your work I work with 9 different markets across the Middle East and most recently in Europe, so it's really hard to keep up with the daily tasks. I put everything on my mind down on paper. I number their importance and prioritize my tasks. I believe that if you get the top 5 tasks done per day then you're on the safe side. What advice would you give to PR students? And those who are soon to graduate? It's not easy to constantly be social, positive and cheerful.. especially on bad hair days.. but the outcome is worth all the effort You have to understand the importance of PR first for you to appreciate it, the market has to constantly be remnded of your existance to succeed nowadays, like oscar wilde said, "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." If you think that this field was made for you, then hop on the train and enjoy the ride. What work have you done recently makes you really proud? We recently opened a store in Lebanon and we had a PR event for the opening. the event for the press was beautifully set up outdoors. the night before the event it started to rain heavily, all night! really loud scary thunder. I was trying to sleep worrying about the event, thinking no one would show up. the next morning it was still raining! on the way to the event, I had a bet that only 5 would show up out of the 50 press that were invited. Major Fail! but to my luck, the rain stopped, the sun came out, all the press showed up! the event went better than planned and as soon as it ended, the sun disappeared and it poured all day! the coverage we received that month was incredible! I was so proud of myself and seeing the amazing PR results made it all worthwhile. Your message for our magazine? Its an honor to be selected as your first People's Person of the month, it means a lot to me and just like a said earlier, sometimes I need a push, and this interview did it for me.

Meet

Ranna Al-Bassam The Queen of Layering

It is always hard to describe one's style in a nice clean paragraph.... Style words that appeal to me are edgy, polished, rocker chic, the fusion of hard and soft. One thing I can say is that I am not really a shopper. I can go into a boutique and instantly be attracted to something, or otherwise leave in a minute. If I like it, I wear it. It really is as simple as that. For me, personal style is really all about taste and being true to yourself. So, you might see me wearing a piece that is considered out-dated, but through accessories I will revamp it into something that fits my style. My wardrobe inspirations come from many places, from something as simple as my mood, to a simple accessory piece my lovely twin bought for me. That's what I aspire to do in my style. Own my look whatever it is. May 2013

The Breakfast Club A Blast From The Past

I would like to share with you one of the movies that I have really liked. The movie is called ''The Breakfast Club'' it was released back in 1985 and I have been wanting to watch it and it was on my watch list and finally I did.

If you haven't watched it yet, Please do.

I found the movie very interesting to watch and meaningful with a great story behind it.

I would like also to share with you some one of my favorite quote from the movie and I would like you to share with me your favorite ones. I'll tell what, lets also make it more interesting by you writing it by yourself and sharing it on Instagram :) and mention my name @ALRAGUM and @CITYPAGESKUWAIT.

The summary of the story goes Like this…

I will leave a blank space below for you to write your favorite one.

There were five students with nothing in common, faced with spending a Saturday detention together in their high school library. At 7 a.m., they had nothing to say, but by 4 p.m., they had poured their hearts to each other and become good friends. To the outside world they were simply the Athlete, the Brain, the Criminal, the Princess and the useless, but to each other, they would always be the Breakfast Club.

My Favorite quote is from the movie "Forrest Gump" 1994 and was said by one of the best actors in hollywood "Tom Hanks":

Quote : My momma always said, "Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get".

Fact: It is considered to be one of the greatest high school films of all time. Now share your favorite one Your favorite Quote? and share it on Instagram.

Fame in the Adriatic Chapter Three

“Becoming poor he will be little valued by anyone.” I Shadows inside the house dance into substance. A young man comes out, his long legs take the three steps in one quick swoosh. Though he doesn’t turn his head to acknowledge us standing beside the squeaky railing, his eyes, those deep, blue, penetrating eyes, strip us both in one instance, sending a lightning bolt of shock up our spines. He smells of jasmine when he passes us. Caterina and I realize a moment later that our bodies have twisted a little near the waist to see him disappear into the distance.

it often feels as though only the twins sleep in the house, for Niccolo, the eldest, and Cecco the youngest before Caterina, are never home. So it is my tiny friend herself who brings a water basin and some towels for me to douse my sweat. As I cleanse, she digs into her chests and pulls out her own dresses, laying them on her bed like a Jewish cloth merchant.

II Caterina wants something black to show my suitor that I am pious, unaware of the proposal; that I am present at Church to be with our Lord, not to be married, but since this isn’t all she desires, and since she also wants to show me off, to get me married, to make me appear as though I am ready to be plucked and devoured, she scratches her chin, mumbling to herself prayers to guide her toward the best selection. She curses ten minutes later for she is still unable to make it.

“What. Was. That?” my friend asks. Her lips remain parted, even after she finishes speaking.

My mind wanders to the apparition, whose black pants were tucked into brown, leather boots folded at the knees with golden chains that coil around the ankles. I know these to be riding boots so why wear them in a fishing village in August? He had a linen chemise the color of dark orchids, whose drawstrings were tied below his throat, where a golden broche, whose engravings I couldn’t examine, had glistened.

I merely shake my head.

“Might he be the new neighbor?”

What was that?

The words excite Caterina. “My Lord in heaven that nose so straight you’d think he was an Arab. And his hair, Maria, so black and thick below his purple bareta. Did you smell it? Perfumed like the East? I told Alfonso to buy me a bottle once from a ship that came from Florence. It was heaven, Maria. Heaven. I don’t understand how Giuseppe could worship Poseidon when nothing stinks more on earth than fish and the oceans they live in.”

Those eyes. We live in a fishing village in Corfu where we mingle with all sorts of local men, those that we’ve learned to see depart for months on end, as they make their trips through the republic, visiting islands on the Adriatic coast all the way to the queen herself, Venice, as well as new foreign men who show up daily, who focus their male gaze upon us girls, disrobing us with their vision, then whistling, jeering, and saying things too inappropriate for virgins to hear. But never in my whole life have I experienced something like this. The fish from Largus’s Compositiones come to mind, the ones that jolt you when you touch them, the ones physicians use to cure gout or headaches. Caterina tugs on my sleeve. “Is he human?” I shrug. “If he is, he could be on his way to Church. We are going to be late, too. Come, Maria. Let’s get you married.” The subject of marriage recovers Caterina, making her bubbly again. Not me. My gooseflesh is still there, a constant reminder of the apparition, of his eyes. I remove my black dress when I enter Caterina’s house and pull off my leather shoes whose soles drip dirt and mud. Caterina doesn’t have any slaves. She lives in a house with two ailing parents, whom we kissed on our way to her bedroom, and four older brothers, though www.citypageskuwait.com

I roll my eyes. Caterina is too young still, too immature. For me, the stranger is interesting, not heavenly. Who, what, where, when, how, and why, are the issues that concern me, not the circumference of his nostrils. Yet little Caterina is besotted, and forgetting her devotion to Alfonso, she continues to rave about the handsome apparition. Of course, it doesn’t strike her as odd that a man would wear riding boots in a fishing village. He’s a man decked in gold, emanating the scent of jasmine; that is all Caterina cares for. Never mind the attitude right? The utmost insolence? Acting as though we were invisible? He could’ve said hello. I know Giuseppe would’ve. Oh, my god, Giuseppe… I think it just hits me. Am I really getting married? Is he really leaving? Um. I don’t think so.

III “What in the name of the saints are you—Maria! Get back here.” She runs after me, and we tussle near the entrance of the house.

{Literature/Short Stories} “Don’t you get it?” I am now yelling, my emotions suddenly flooding my nerves. “It is Giuseppe!” “To hell with the infidel!” Caterina, tiny Caterina, has a shriek that rivals the Sirens’. Our cries draw attention, and like a nightmare in which it turns out that you are not actually asleep, my mother, cane in hand, emerges from our front door…and I realize that I am in my underclothes. Mother, who let herself go the past year, eating pasta twice and sometimes thrice a day, looks shorter than she really is. Her round body descends our steps and charges in our direction, a Roman bull charging in the Coliseum. The first kiss of the cane passes without any emotional imprints; it is just too loud and the situation too frightening. Caterina, my best most loyal friend whom I am grateful for having, for loving without restraint, throws herself in front of me, arms spread out, beseeching my mom to stop—and it is in this moment that I feel it: the burning sensation searing my skin. The kiss of the cane is unbearably painful. I cry in agony, behind my tiny human shelter.

“By men who never laid their eyes upon you! The mere mention of the name, Maria Botticelli, drives men to reject you. Why? Because of these things you do. You are too unaware of society. You play, oh Maria, you play like you were never a woman, never under pressure to be wanted. But. You. Are. A Woman. And because of these things, you have been rejected fourteen times in twelve months. Am I making myself clear?” I have forgotten to breathe. When she says “clear,” I inhale as though I have been underwater. And then I merely nod. The words, like an orange gone sour, cannot be ingested. So this is the source of her felicity? I am finally wanted by some man who, upon hearing my name, did not call on Beelzebub? “Why didn’t you tell me?” My voice is seeping pain. “Maria, Maria, Maria.” She sits on her knees. “Forget about that now. This is the chance to fix everything; to show Vittoria and the rest of the village girls that you are not an anathema and that you can ascend from your conditions.” What does one say to that? Ascend from your “conditions?”

“She’s going back in to dress, Mrs. Botticelli!”

“Fine.” I concede.

“I know, I know, she is, she is, she won’t, she won’t,” Caterina pleads with my mother who has not left a single profanity or threat unspoken, who waves the cane threateningly.

“Oh don’t get mad, Maria, I love you and only wish you well.”

Elana smiles with malfeasant content on our porch. No doubt it was she who informed Mother that I was outside half-dressed with Caterina. I make a mental note to kiss her myself with the cane if I survive this night. Pulling me toward her house, Caterina promises that she will suit me up and deliver me to Church for an entry that rivals a courtesan’s, and then she says good-bye to my mother, who heads there before us. Once inside the house, I tell Caterina about Elana. “Oh Maria! Will you just stop and think? Service starts in five minutes, and you’re still undressed! Can you not make this difficult for everyone around you, and just put this on? We’ll have to hire a carriage to get there for if we run there you’ll be sweating through your clothes, and I barely have enough ducats for tomorrow’s play.” I’ve been saving up my change ever since I turned ten, taking whatever’s left from my trips to the market and adding it together, and when Father died, he left me a decent stash as a boost toward realizing my dream. Unlike Caterina, I don’t appreciate the arts, so I rarely attend the theater save only when Giuseppe’s acting, and music for me is not—what was the word she used?—“transcendence.” Music was annoyance, a hindrance to total immersion in texts that require concentration. To texts that actually mattered. And where there is music, liberality usually follows, which is oh so not my thing, ever. Unless…

77

V I look at the collection of black dresses and choose one. Caterina helps me on with it. We do so in silence. She doesn’t comment on my choice of dress or the slight distance between my top button and its hook. She dips her comb into a water basin then tries her best to run it through my hair. She ties a fat white ribbon around it, crossing it thrice before turning it into a beautiful bow. She tops my head with a black chapeau that tilts forward, almost shielding my eyes, whose tail of pink and white mallow-leaved bindweed encircles half the chapeau’s crown, resting with sedated propriety on the curved brim. “Can I paint your face?” I shrug. I am all concession now, all submission, all obedience. “You know, Maria, you could be beautiful.” Yes, let’s keep talking about my appearance. “Beauty is made now, from paints and clothes, if you only just leave your ugly science and concentrate on kosmetike, you will see another modern discovery that you’ve overlooked.” “What is that?” “See how ancient you are? You do not even know the meaning of the word! It is the Greek for ‘the art of dress and ornament,’ which is what we girls define as a modern discovery. What use have we for printing or the center of the universe? Let men busy themselves with the ugly.” Like me?

“Giuseppe…”

IV Caterina shoves me on her bed and slaps my cheek. I blink. “You stupid, senseless, foolish, spoilt, dolt! You are getting married! If you mention that wretched name one more time, so help me God, I will crack your mother’s cane on your skull. Look at me! Stop blinking and look!” She grabs my face, her eyes glaring daggers. “Maria. You are ugly. You are poor. You are sixteen.” Ouch. Ouch. Ouch.

It is true that though I am all obedience, it is only on the outside, and inside I am wondering if I should take Giuseppe’s offer and run away at first light. He is a mule, a heathen, a whatever-Caterina-has-called-him, but he does not call me ugly and does not run away when my name is mentioned. In my head I even roll around the possibility of becoming “Mrs. Maria Nini” just to see how it makes me feel, and you know what, it feels a whole lot better than what I’m feeling now. “Are we done?” I say. “Are you still mad I kept it from you?” Yes, let’s forget that you also called me ugly, poor, and a spinster. “Of course not.”

“Your mother and I have kept this from you, but I swear that during the past year, you have been rejected fourteen times!”

“Oh good. ‘Cause I can’t wait to see you married. Let’s convince your suitor to have it on the same day as my wedding, can we? Oh, Maria, say yes! Alfonso won’t mind, I’m sure, and then the twins can give us both away!”

Excuse me?

“Sounds like a plan.” Not. May 2013

Inspirations Paulo Coelho. Paulo Coelho is famously known for many great titles around the world in 68 languages in 150 countries worldwide, such as, The Winner Stands Alone (2008), The Alchemist (1988), 11 Minutes (2003), The Manual of The Warrior of Light (1997) and many more. He is also a best seller author that sold 100 million copies of his books worldwide. Also, he was named United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2007. To tell you more about his book Inspirations, first you have to understand the meaning of the word Anthology, which is a word derived from the Greek word that stands for garlands which is a bouquet of flowers, bits and pieces from different gardens and different seasons all put into one arrangement. In the case of Inspirations, it is Coelho’s Anthology of his favorite classical literature selections. However in this specific anthology it’s a different case; lots of authors like to organize some selected works by others in a new book in many different ways, however Paulo Coelho divided the work based on the four elements of the world; Earth, Fire, Water and Air symbolizing our entire world combined. In Earth we find it D.H. Lawrence from Lady Chatterley’s Lover (1928) as well as the great Oscar Wilde. In the Air element we find interesting selections from Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude (1970). And in the Water element you find titles like The Prince (1532) by Niccolò Machiavelli. And in the Fire element there is the famous story of Frankenstein (1818) written by Mary Shelley and a selection of Special Verses by Rumi. Moreover there are many more famous titles such as: Robert Louis Steven’s The Strange Case of www.citypageskuwait.com

Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde (1886), The Desert Fathers: Sayings of the Early Christian Monks (Third Century AD), Leopold Sacher-Masoch’s Venus in Furs (1870) and Khalil Gibran’s The Prophet (1923). This book would be a great gift to someone dear to you as it was a gift given to me by a dear friend back in 2010. If you are not so much into reading this would be a perfect book for you to read to start falling in love with books. As it has various authors, different writing styles that help the reader discover their own taste of books and authors. Also, if you love Paulo Coelho as I do, this book is a like a gift from him to all of us out there, as it is his favorite flowers combined in one lovely arrangement.

Next month I will be reviewing a very interesting book called the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. An adorable name for an adorable book. What would you do if you receive a letter from someone you don’t know across seas, would you reply to the letter? Nowadays barely anyone uses mails except maybe ME however; it is a story that will blow your mind and make you not put the book down. Stay tuned to know what I think about it.

May Book Releases

This May we say good-bye to beloved vampires and welcome the third book from a favorite author. What else is in store for this warm spring month? More books will be added as titles are announced, but here are the details of what we know so far.

Americanah

And the Mountains Echoed

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was born in Nigeria. Her last novel was Half of a Yellow Sun and was released in 2006. In 2009, she released a short story collection, The Thing around Your Neck. Americanah is about two teenagers who fall in love in Nigeria. When they return to their home country and are reunited years later, much has changed in them and their country.

Khaled Hosseini's debut novel, The Kite Runner, was one of the Best Books of the Last Decade. His second novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns, was equally acclaimed. In both these stories, Hosseini brought to life characters in Afghanistan, helping humanize for many Americans the people and places where we were at war post-9/11. Although America is still involved in a war in Afghanistan, it is one that gets little attention and our relationship with that country has become less of a "hot topic." Still, Hosseini is a great writer not just for his timely subject area, but also for his plot and character development.

Dead Ever After

Inferno

The thirteenth and last installment in Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire series is set for release this month. Dead Ever After will close the series that started with Dead Until Dark and inspired the hit HBO series True Blood. While the series had become a bit stale in recent books, I'm sure Trubies will still be dying to see how this series wraps up.

Inferno is Dan Brown's next Robert Langdon thriller, following The Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons and The Lost Symbol.

Entwined with You

The Summer I Became a Nerd

From the moment I first met Gideon Cross, I recognized something in him that I needed. Something I couldn’t resist. I saw the dangerous and damaged soul inside–so much like my own. I was drawn to it. I needed him as surely as I needed my heart to beat. No one knows how much he risked for me. How much I’d been threatened, or just how dark and desperate the shadow of our pasts would become. Entwined by our secrets, we tried to defy the odds. We made our own rules and surrendered completely to the exquisite power of possession.

On the outside, seventeen-year-old Madelyne Summers looks like your typical blond cheerleader— perky, popular, and dating the star quarterback. But inside, Maddie spends more time agonizing over what will happen in the next issue of her favorite comic book than planning pep rallies with her squad. That she’s a nerd hiding in a popular girl's body isn’t just unknown, it's anti-known. And she needs to keep it that way.

If I Should Die

The Rules for Disappearing

I will not lose another person I love. I will not let history repeat itself. Vincent waited lifetimes to find me, but in an instant our future together was shattered. He was betrayed by someone we both called a friend, and I lost him. Now our enemy is determined to rule over France’s immortals, and willing to wage a war to get what they want. It shouldn’t be possible, none of it should be, but this is my reality. I know Vincent is somewhere out there, I know he’s not completely gone, and I will do anything to save him.

She’s been six different people in six different places: Madeline in Ohio, Isabelle in Missouri, Olivia in Kentucky . But now that she’s been transplanted to rural Louisiana, she has decided that this fake identity will be her last. Witness Protection has taken nearly everything from her. But for now, they’ve given her a new name, Megan Rose Jones, and a horrible hair color. For the past eight months, Meg has begged her father to answer one question: What on earth did he do – or see – that landed them in this god-awful mess? Meg has just about had it with all the Suits’ rules — and her dad’s silence.

Nadia AlHassan

Nadia Al-hassan is a student in Ireland, studying Journalism. She is passionate about writing stories and poetry. Nadia loves helping people with her stories. She believes that words are so beautiful and powerful.

Peace The wind was blowing gently and I could hear the birds chirping. They sang so beautifully, the whole atmosphere felt wonderful. The sun was beaming down and I left out a sigh, a happy sigh. I sat down on the bench and observed the people that passed me by, it felt good to just relax and take in everything. As I watched the world around me, I spotted a piece of paper on the floor, curiosity kicked in. “What could it be?” I thought to myself. I went over and picked it up, it looked old and it was all crumbled but my heart started to skip a beat, this paper meant something. I don’t know why but my whole body started to shiver. I caught my breath for a moment, I felt scared but excited at the same time and I had to read it. I opened the paper up very carefully and I started to read out the words, quietly.

By the time I reached the end of the letter, my tears had spilt on the paper and left a wet stain. A million thoughts crossed my mind and I couldn’t help but wonder if his wife ever received the letter and how long ago was it written? Most importantly, did he come back home eventually? Did he get to come back to his loving family? I gently placed the letter in my pocket and closed my eyes. Peace, what a beautiful thing, a thing that everyone should always have. That night, I prayed. I prayed for peace. I prayed for those who were suffering all around the world and had no homes to go to, had no food to eat and lived in fear. We are all brothers and sisters. I prayed that one-day hatred will be destroyed and love will be planted in all our hearts. Then I prayed for the man and his family. ‘Give them peace,’ I whispered.

Dear Sweetheart,

It’s been awhile since I’ve last seen you, I miss you and our beautiful daughter. I keep a photo of you both under my pillow every night, it aches me to be away from you. I know it’s been a long time since I’ve been home, I dream of coming home. Once the war is over, we will be together again, I promise. I lost my friend today and I feel broken. I tried to save him but I was too late, by the time I had the chance to, he was gone. I wish I could close my eyes and magically disappear from this scary place. Why can’t this world just live in peace? I will keep fighting for peace, a world that you and our beautiful daughter can happily live in. Innocent people are dying, I hear children crying and I pray that it is all over soon. You must keep strong and just remember, I love you so much. We will have the peaceful, loving and caring world that we all so desperately yearn for one day. Till then, have patience and keep safe. I am not far from you, I am always in your heart. Love always, Your husband.

{Entertainment/Music}

T

he Selector is a weekly program launched by the British Council on Superstation Radio Kuwait FM 99.7 every Wednesday at 4pm. The Selector is made up of all styles of contemporary music and features interviews and special studio sessions from new UK artists as well as a mix of UK’s best hits with the aim of bringing together both UK and Kuwait’s culture. This April on The Selector, Goldierocks played the latest UK music including Sun Kissed Bliss by Splashh, She Will by Savages, and If I Died by Sweet Baboo, alongside many more tracks. She went on to describe the band Savages as “a really raw, all girl post-punk band.” This month’s top mixes come from Croydon based producer Deft whose original name is ‘Yip Wong,’ and Simon Stuarts. Goldirocks sat down with the talented Jamie Lidell for an interview and ended up discussing a few topics with him, primarily asking him where his musical talents thrived off. He stated that he used to listen to all the music his sister would listen to and then finally he listened to Prince, and Prince “stuck” with him, he would listen to his music and try to play along with his guitar. He stated that he has a “musical lineage,” because he grew up in a very musical household, and so he “has music in him,” because of it. He started playing instruments at sixteen years old, and ever since then, he was hooked! Jamie then claimed that his first big concert was when he was seventeen, but now he has just released his latest album which he has “put a lot of love in it.” Finally, when Goldirocks asked him where in the world he would want to play his music, he responded that he would love to do that in Africa. Goldirocks gave the British Council in Libya a shout-out and claimed that she “admires and respects” the Libyan people for their strength in moving on with their lives, and The Selector has officially branched out to Libya. Also on The Selector this month, James Yuill, a musician who resides in London hosted a Live Session. James Yuill is an electronic musician who stated that his first attraction to the world of music was when he purchased a guitar and “wanted to be like Kurt Cobain,” soon after this, however, his style changed as he got influenced by various artists in different genres. The process he follows to create his music begins with writing his songs and then uploading the beats over the top of the words. His album “These Spirits” is out now, and it took him a year to create, when mentioning the album he said that “I think it’s really just an album for me,” basically stating that he created it for himself, without pressure from what he thinks people would want to listen to, it was purely what he wanted to put on that album. After his Live Session ended his track ‘Let it Go’ was played, which he claimed is about “breaking up with someone and getting over the whole emotional rollercoaster.”

Jamawar

a food experience your taste buds can’t miss There are many Indian restaurants in Kuwait, this time our team at CityPages got a chance to try the newly opened Jamawar’s menu. Read on to discover why Jamawar, located on the first floor of the Crowne Plaza, is surely to exceed your expectations in food, atmosphere and service. www.citypageskuwait.com

FOOD Tasting

As we got close to the doors of Jamawar we were greeted by the Durban (doorman), dressed in full Rajasthan attire and welcomed with the traditional “Namaste.” As we were seated we were able to appreciate more the atmosphere of the place — soothing Indian music on the background, traditional Indian incense at the entrance with a bowl of water and rose petals gently floating along little candles, regal paintings and elegant vases decorating the walls. As we were sitting on the nice leather chairs under the soft lighting, we were served with complimentary papad along with their sweet mango, tamarind and mint chutney, as well as pickled mango to munch on. I liked their sweet mango chutney the best, because the sauce was sweet at first and then the heat kicks in as you bite into the little mango pieces. We started eating the Delhi Chat (a combination of apples, potatoes, cucumbers and crunchy pieces on thin bread and pomegranate seeds mixed in yogurt and mint chutney). It was refreshing with the hints of mint and chutney, while the pomegranate seeds added a sweet pop to every bite. Then came our starters; first was their Chicken Pakora. We all liked this the best because of the tandoori chicken with a special coating made with flour and deep-fried. Then came their home made Samosa, a mixture of veggies deep-fried as well, followed by the Onion Bhajji. The batter was so crunchy and not overwhelming the taste of the onion, which tasted great, this made it our second best option. We then had shrimp coated with sesame seeds and spices, marinated and deepfried. This was (fashion guy’s name) third best starter. We also tried their Chilgoza Kabab (soft broiled pieces of chicken were (car guy’s name) third best starter. May 2013

FOOD Tasting

Worth special mention was the signature “Tandoori Jamawar Jhingha”, which is coated shrimp with spices and marinated, but instead of deep frying it, the shrimp is placed into the clay oven and grilled. An absolute delicacy! We also tried their Boti Tikka, which were little cubed pieces of lamb coated in herbs with a hint of spiciness. The lamb was so tender I didn’t use my knife at all. My third best starter was the lamb chops that came last. They were nicely seared, again didn’t use my knife, as the meat was so tender. It was slightly spicy, but nothing an Indian food fanatic like me couldn’t handle. I enjoyed each soft, juicy bite full of herbs and just the right amount of heat to get your lips tingling. Then came the main courses, which we didn’t think we would be able to eat because the starters were so good, but as the main courses started coming somehow we got hungry again and started trying them out. They brought four kinds on naan — butter, garlic, cheese, and my favorite the Pudina, which had dry mint on it. First we ate Chicken Biryani, which I liked a lot, especially because it had soft caramelized onions and the chicken was super tender and juicy. Then came the Murg Makhani (Murg meaning chicken and Makhani meaning butter). I love trying this dish at every Indian restaurant, but the one at Jamawar was much creamier and well seasoned. Next we had their Ghosht Banjara (Ghosht for lamb and Banjara is the style of preparation). This dish was minty, fresh with a slight hint of heat, and it was no surprise that the lamb was also tender. We also tried their Jhinga Dum Anari, which ranked second on my top three main courses(Jhinga for shrimp, dum which is the cooking method similar to steaming and anari, meaning pomegranate seed). This dish had the shrimp well cooked, it was earthy, with a hint of mint, it remained juicy, and the spices blended well together with the sweet bursts of flavor from the pomegranate seed. My third best main course was their Madrasi Hamour. I usually don’t eat fish or like things with coconut, but the combination of the two was surprisingly good. I liked how the fish retained its texture, and how the flavor of the fish creeps up slowly and seeps through your taste buds.

www.citypageskuwait.com

Last but certainly not least, the best main course ranking at number one, their “Dal Jamawar”. This signature dish, made with seven different kinds of lentils, where the black dal (lentil) is the star. It’s with no surprise that this creamy, earthy dish is one of the most requested and liked at Jamawar.

91

We ended our evening with four desserts, their Gajar Ka Halwa(meaning sweet made of carrot), their Gulab Jamun, Kulfi and Rasmalai, but only three made it to our top three. Starting from the third was the Gulab Jamun, these milk dumplings are deep-fried, kept in sugar syrup and served hot. I liked this a lot because their sugar syrup was not overly sweet and the deep fried dumplings had still a good outer shell, making them the best gulab jamun I’ve ever tried. The Rasmalai came in second place. These milk dumplings are kept in milk syrup, they are sweet, spongy and served cold. Their spongy consistency holds most of the milk syrup, so as you bite in it there is a burst of milky goodness. Finally our number one dessert, their Kulfi. This homemade ice cream is made fresh at Jamawar. The roughly ten hour process consists of letting the milk reduce over a long period of time, flavored with saffron and pistachio, then placing it into a mold to let it cool. The reduction of milk leaves a grainy texture, but the ice cream is still milky and creamy, and is later on served cold decorated with a rose petal and a strawberry flavored jelly. Our dinner at Jamawar was amazing. Not only was the atmosphere great and the food superb, but also their friendly staff helped me a lot into writing this piece. They are very passionate about the cuisine served in their restaurant and had knowledgeable about each dish preparation, the ingredients and cooking techniques used and history behind each dish. Be sure to try Jamawar and enjoy their food, with great atmosphere created by their live music along with their welcoming staff, which will surely add to your fine dining experience there.

FAR AH Al Saad

a young entrepreneur redesigning hama At 15 she started designing accessories, but this year she brings a new twist on hama, which has taken Kuwait by storm. Meet the story behind Modern Hama and the woman who started it all. Please introduce yourself to our readers? My name is Farah Al-Saad. I’m a senior student at the American University. I’m 21 years old and I’m the owner of Modern Hama, which I recently started a couple of months ago.

What and where are you currently studying? My major is in accounting, and I’m studying at AUM.

Since when did you start designing accessories and hama? When I was 15 I started designing accessories, but a few months ago I started the idea of doing hama (Headpieces).

How and from did you get the inspiration to start designing accessories and hama? I usually stay at home or chalet to work on new designs. My inspirations come from nowhere. First, I search what’s in trend and I draw my designs and start doing them. The final step is adding the crystals.

What is the reason that you selected to study accounting as a major while your interest was in accessory designing? www.citypageskuwait.com

I went to different universities and I wanted to study graphic design, but it didn’t work. However, I do separate my study and my business.

Where did you first display your accessories and which other exhibitions have you participated in? The first I did was on Instagram, after that I participated at P2bk.

What was the instant market reaction to your products? My product was something new and many people first disliked the idea, but when they tried my hama they fell in love with it.

Can we say that you have brought a revolution to headpieces and hama? Yes, after I started my business many girls started copying my hama, also some of them took my pictures and posted them at their account for sale!

How long does it take to make a single piece of hama? Each hama takes 20 minutes, but if it has a lot of chains and crystals

What are your achievements? Actually, I sold more than 500 hama in less than one year. I participated at P2BK for one week and from the second day I sold everything. I shipped lots of hama abroad. Moreover, my hama was in the cover page of The Avenues magazine.

What is the best compliment you have received for your products so far and by who? Most of my customers write amazing compliments, but my favorite came from a customer (Manal), who said, "so elegant and feeling like a princess with my hama on my head, thank u for making me beautiful."

Your message for us at CityPages magazine?

Photographer: Abdulaziz Al-Shayji | Location: Cafe Del Mar, Laila Gallery - Salmiya

What makes your collection different and unique from others? I have my own special and unique pieces. For example, some of my chains are from different countries. Also, sometimes I do onehama and limited ones.

What are your future goals? My future goal is to have my own store in and outside Kuwait, because I have lovely customers from KSA, UAE, Qatar and USA.

What are some of your hobbies? Sports

Dress The Season With Veronica Moncho Lobo The Social Season is upon us once again, and we are in a frenzy of what to wear. Not only do we have to consider the inclement British weather but Ascot has in recent years become stricter in its women's dress code; bare shoulders are not permitted and dresses cannot have straps of less than one inch. Ver贸nica Moncho Lobo had this at the forefront of her mind in the designing of her latest collection, which sports dresses apt for Ascot, Henley, Goodwood and Wimbledon. Shift dresses with a twist, summer coats and little jackets in light colours. Veronica hits all the right spots with this divine collection of silhouetted shapes, strong colours, understated ruffles and lace applications, that is bang on trend for Spring/Summer 2013 White and off white are the canvas for bright pinks and crisp yellow and greens and the designer's own prints.

‫إختيار رائحة الصيف‬

When the days start temperature up and the nights get humid, it is a sign to review your summer beauty rule. It is time to switch to lighter makeup with fruity and light scent to match the relaxing of the season.

One of the golden rules of beauty is that your system should change as the seasons do and this applies especially to perfume. Perfumes are very seasonal, and particularly in Kuwait summer which lives in very high temperature, that why summer calls for much lighter fresher scents. Why? Heat buildup the notes in a perfume, meaning that the deep sensual perfume that’s gotten you through winter will be way too powerful in the warmer weather.

Perfumes that contain notes such as mandarin, grapefruit, lemon and lime are always incredibly crisp and fresh. However, citrus notes disappear after 10 to 15 minutes (lasting isn’t their strong suit) which is why it is a good idea to go for a perfume that combines zesty notes with floral ones. You’ll still get that freshness, but you won’t need to spray yourself all day long.

I love having my iPhone with me on the plane because it's really an all in one for me. I can listen to music, watch movies, and relax to an audiobook. It keeps me entertained for hours of fun on the plane ride.

Something about a plane ride always seems to dry out my skin. In order to look revived and fresh upon landing I like to pack something that can give my skin that quick pick me up. I like the Evian mineral spray because it's full of minerals that revives the skin and sets my makeup.

For those early morning flights, where you need to catch up on your zzz's, make sure you pack a pillow. I'm a fan of those neck pillows because their small and easy to stuff in a carry on and can still help me to relax for the ride.

Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S Models Porsche has finally revealed the all new Porsche 911 Turbo and Turbo S models of the 991 Series, the fifth generation that marks the 40th anniversary of the Turbo models, while the 911 series itself marks the 50th anniversary. At a first glance, the differences between the Porsche 911 Carrera 4 and the new Turbo models is evident among them being the wider ‘hips’ and the two-tone 20-inch alloy wheels. The new Porsche 911 Turbo S comes with full LED headlights fitted with daytime running lights and automatic dimming beam as standard and optional in the Turbo model. Their powerhouses is fed by a twin-turbo 3.8 liter, direct-injection and 6-cylinder boxer engine discharging 383 kW (520 hp) in the turbo model and 412 kW (560 hp) in the Turbo S model. The powerhouse in both cases is then mated to a

7- speed PDK transmission with a start-stop system. Also in these new Turbo models is a new thermal management system that results to fuel saving of up to 16 percent and the fuel consumption of both the Turbo and Turbo S which is at 9.7 l/100 km. Porsche developed a new version of their PTMPorsche Traction Management fitted to the four wheel drive system of these Turbo models, the Turbo model now sprints from naught to 100km/h in 3.2 seconds faster than the previous Turbo S by 0.1 seconds, the new Turbo S does the same in just 3.1 seconds and a top speed of 318km/h. About the sound from the exhaust, Porsche has ensured that passengers will enjoy the ‘turbo sound’ through the sound symposer. It has an acoustic channel and a membrane that allows the vibrations between the throttle valve and the air filter transmit to the interior; giving the passengers the electric feeling felt from the outside. Yet another amazing feature, appearing for the first time in the new Porsche 911 Turbo models-the rear wheel steering. This is all about improving performance on the track and road thanks to the two electro-mechanical actuators in place of conventional bearing arms on the left and right side of the rear axle. Basically, at speeds of up to 50km/h, the rear wheels relative to the front wheels in the opposite direction. The driver will experience the same effect as a 250 mm shorter wheelbase more refined steering effect! Once the car reaches 80km/h, the rear wheels steer right along with the front wheels and the driver will experience the same effect as a longer wheel base 500 mm and that means more stability at high speeds. The aerodynamics is enhanced through the use of the new front spoiler built with three parts which are pneumati-

cally adjustable and also a rear spoiler that has three positions. In regard to these spoiler positions, the driver can choose from different ranges among them being optimal efficiency which is less drag and more speed to extreme sporty ranges. In a sporty range, the front spoiler is fully extended for maximum down-force on front axle while the rear spoiler is at the highest point for maximum downforce on rear wheels. These conditions ensured a time saving of two seconds on the N端rburgring Nordschleife. With the Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control as an option for the first time in the Turbo and Turbo S models, the 911 Turbo S puts a round of the 20.8 km long circuit in less than 7 minutes and 30 seconds. The interior id treated to the color combination Black and Carrera red while the sport seats are adjustable up to 18 positions and with memory along. The rear of the backrests is lined with leather; the seats are further treated to double stitching. Music lovers will enjoy the Bose audio system also in the previous 911 Turbo but this time and as option is the Burmester system. Other details include the adaptive cruise control and traffic detection features. As for the prices (inclusive of VAT), the Porsche 911 Turbo is priced from 60,000 KD while the Porsche 911 Turbo S is priced from 70,000 KD, these cars will be available for purchase in late September this year.

Me and my friend Kim One day not long after Kim visited Asnan tower, I passed by these two young girls and all of a sudden one of them elbowed the other and whispered: “ That’s her.” I lifted my chin a bit, squared my shoulders, and walked a little bit taller. “So this is how it feels to be famous,” I thought to myself. “That’s the doctor who treated Kim Kardashian.” Doh! I guess I’m just famous by association….ah what the heck, I’LL TAKE IT!

So being famous by association has its perks. I get phone calls and text messages from people I haven’t heard from in ages. I have random strangers stop to ask me important questions such as: “How tall is Kim?”, “Does she wear a lot of make-up?”, “Is she pretty up close?”, so allow me, with my vast knowledge in dentistry and skilled hands in the craft to answer the two most common questions I have heard. “What’s she like?” Well, in my brief encounter with Kim, I would have to say she is quite nice, polite, and respectful. She highly complimented our tower and even one of her entourage stated that he wouldn’t find such a state of the art dental clinic in the US. Her entourage consisted of a bodyguard, a publicist, and a handful of other people I probably wouldn’t be able to identify even if I tried. Once we were alone, we had a chance to speak a little where I asked her how exhausted she must be, how she is enjoying Kuwait, and what she thought of Asnan. She in turn admitted to being exhausted in the whirlwind of a trip she had planned, wished she had more time to spend in Kuwait, and how impressed she was with the décor, facilities, and the US trained specialists.

As for the second most common question I heard, “What kind of treatment did she need?”. All I have to say is, “Apart from patient doctor confidentiality, who cares? Kim Kardashian chose Asnan!!” So that sums up my experience with Kim. In my new found status, I would like to thank my two relatives who commented on me being prettier than she and thank everyone else who made me famous by association.

Ford Focus ST Sees Strong Demand in the Middle East The Focus ST is Ford’s first truly global performance car, building on the heritage of previous Focus ST models and giving drivers around the world the opportunity to share the exhilarating performance, unrivaled handling, addictive sound and sporty design that Ford's ST badge represents. Shortly after arriving in the Middle East, the stunning Focus ST is becoming popular with strong demand for more units to be available. The five-door Focus ST delivers the same driving attributes that makes all Ford ‘Sports Technologies’ (ST) models stand out. The chassis, engine, sound and comfort of the vehicle are tuned to deliver a truly sporty experience combined with a high level of refinement. These same attributes will form the genetic code for future Ford models that might wear the ST badge. “The Focus ST has been designed to appeal to driving enthusiasts across the Middle East,” said Paul Anderson, Marketing director at Ford Middle East. “Our global performance teams based in North America, Europe and Asia have worked together to develop the core product attributes – steering, driving dynamics, sound quality and power enhancements – for all Ford ST models including interior and exterior differentiation. They’ve been defined to the extent that our engineers were able to apply that global DNA fingerprint to the new Focus ST and deliver a distinctive sporting personality all its own. “Performance hatch lovers know the Focus ST and its capabilities very well and have been eager to own one as soon as we introduced it to the Middle East markets,” he added. “The feedback we have received so far from our dealers and customers around the region has been tremendous.”
