Ramadan Kareem dear readers,

My Dear friends and readers, Happy Ramadan! When it comes to Ramadan, the rules go down! All kind of rules, I can't stop the sweet addiction. Staying late at night etc. But the good news we at CityPages choose to "Do it Smart" this Ramadan with Rijeemy Walkathon at 360 Mall. Everyday in Ramadan you can join us and start doing it smart! I am so excited about it and proud that we are the media partner doing such an interesting and fun event with special consideration to your health and fitness. I am also excited about the new segment - MAKE UP CALL by Layla Harmony starting from this issue. Read all about how to maintain a healthy skin this Ramadan in this segment. Our International Correspondent and Team Member - Sam Tahiri had the opportunity to meet and interview Sophie Katirai of Sophie's Closet - the leading store for jewellery based in Dubai. Enjoy Reading this issue and learn more about our Kuwait Fashion Gurus in the Special Supplement that we have put together with this Ramadan issue. The credit for this excellent job goes to our talented Fashion Director -- Noor Khraibut and of-course the talented and amazing photographer Abdulaziz AlShayji along with our team of stylists and not to forget the special support of Abeer AlYaseen for Hair and Makeup from Glamour Saloon. The supplement also features our TOP 10 PLACES TO IFTAR this Ramadan. It was really fun to prepare this list for you and I am sure you would like to visit all as each one of them is special in its own way. We will come back again next month with another exiciting issue highlight Eid El Fitr and other interesting topics as always.

I hope that this month gives us all the chance to reflect on our personal output this past year, and if we have inadvertently hurt anyone, or have done something that may not have sat very well within our conscience to take this time to figure out an alternative route of action for when a simmilar circumstance appears - which most likely it will. They say we all repeat our mistakes until we eventually find the right answer. I hope that I am lucky enough not to repeat my mistakes, and wiser enough to face what is ahead. It truly is the small things that bring one pleasure, and I have to say that after taking a small and much needed break to Europe, I re-discovered how wonderful it is to breathe fresh air, walk down a leaf strewn road, and have it rain on my head. I would always come back home feeling incredibly refreshed and delighted to know that I was taking in nature. Although Kuwait gives us so much, unfortunately beautiful nature is not within our reach, and I am completely convinced now that human beings need to be part of beautiful environment to thrive mentally and physically. I took a small vacation which I wrote a little bit about in my article this month, however I seriously doubt I have done any justice to the destination Monaco, and urge everyone to go there for a mini break. You won't be disappointed. Read about my dear young friend Dana Taqi this month for the Peoples Person feature, we were lucky enough to tack her down for a one on one with CityPages, and must say she looks beautiful in the pictures our resident photographer Aziz took of her. Also, we are pleased to release our very first supplement with the help of our talented Fashion advisor Noor Khraibut of Lab 8 who features her 10 best designer picks for Ramadan 2013. Our cover features no other than Dalal Abul the young TV host of the famous AlWatan TV's show 'Tawal Lail', the perfect person to top our cover for this Ramadan Themed edition of CityPages. There's much more inside to keep you company while you have your coffee or wait at the dentist's office for your turn. We work very hard every month to keep our features fresh, pertinent and enjoyable.

So stay tuned and Ramadan Kareem!

I wish you all a peaceful and positively reflective Ramadan and a wonderful Eid El Fitr ahead.

See the passion of the sea through the eyes and Khaled AlBanai’s lens His passion for the sea was tested once, but now Khaled AlBanai is back under water and enjoying the new opportunity. Along with his passion for swimming, and his newfound passion for photography, he was able to combine them and is now sharing the beautiful under water scenes. Biography: From the passion of swimming to the phobia of entering the sea, Khaled stopped what he loved doing most when he was about to drown in Kuwaiti waters at a very young age. Fortunately he managed to survive and swim to shore safely. Since that day, Khaled would not think twice about going to the sea, until the age of 15 when he faced his fears and brought his passion back into his life once again. For about three years, Khaled was on the water polo team in Kuwait, but that didn’t cut it for Albanai, as swimming was not his only passion and wanted to also pursue his desire of photography. In 2005, Khaled decided to combine both passions together when he started Scuba Diving and started taking underwater photos every time he dived. In 2008 he became a Scuba Diving instructor. Four years after, Albanai decided to further explore his love of underwater photography and took up a program at the International School of Photography in the United States of America up until 2012. Khaled completed and achieved all courses and is now one of two photographers here in Kuwait that are specialized and certified in underwater photography and carries high certifications and accreditations, which are not very common around. Practicing what he preached, Khaled started doing business out of his love for diving and photography, and found himself participating in exhibitions in the USA, selling his photos there and is seriously considering to start selling his photographs in Kuwait as well. Today Khaled has travelled around the world to dive and take pictures from seas in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Malaysia, Lebanon, USA, and many, many more! His dream is to go to Antarctica and dive under the ice caps and is planning this trip soon.

by: Abdalla Al-Muzaini Scenario: Many movies and cartoons today have shown the sea can be a beautiful place but yet still a dangerous one. If you were diving and taking underwater shoots and surprisingly find yourself bumping into a mermaid… This mermaid wants to kiss you and turn you into a merman enabling you to breathe and see under the water… Tell us how would this affect and alter your normal life? “That would be a liberating experience and I would consider living under waters without looking back to land ever again. Not to mention, I love sushi, and living there is like a daily open buffet, however I’ll miss chocolates. So maybe I’d visit land once a year just to see family and friends and have my chocolates. But for me to live under the deep blue sea would be a miracle. I believe there is so much to learn about and learn from different living creatures and fish down there. I am sure there are many hidden secrets which yet mankind has not discovered. With my capability to live underwater, for sure I can reveal these hidden secrets and share it to the world for the human race to benefit from, and that won’t be anything close to sunken treasure chests! I wouldn’t forget that I’m human, but then again I’m also half fish; therefore I would help save any human being from any attacks in the water, or rescue them from drowning, but would also protect the sea from humans who are destroying it and polluting it. After all, we are one life in two different worlds that should be united together, and I’m just in between both.”

The Lantern of Gratitude “You pray in your distress and in your need; would that you might pray also in the fullness of your joy and in your days of abundance.” - Khalil Gibran

My favorite time of the year without fail is Ramadan. I love the change in routine, the spirituality, gatherings, preparations, the lights and lanterns but most of all I love the sense of gratitude that transpires during the holy month and by now you know that when it comes to me and life coaching, I am all about gratitude. So what is it about gratitude that I love so much? Why do I keep coming back to this concept? Gratitude means thankfulness, counting your blessings, noticing the simple pleasures and recognizing everything that comes your way. Gratitude means that you learn to live your life as if everything were a miracle, and being aware on a continuous basis of how much you have been given and are given every day. When you practice gratitude, you shift your focus from what your life lacks to the abundance that is already present. We sometimes take for granted the good that is already present in our lives and today I invite you to do this gratitude exercise to help you shift your perspective. Here is what I would like you to do: 1. Imagine losing some of the things that you take for granted, such as your home, your ability to see or hear, your ability to walk, or anything that currently gives you comfort. 2. Imagine getting each of these things back, one by one, and consider how grateful you would be for each and every one. 3. Start finding joy in the small things instead of holding out for big achievements—such as getting the promotion, getting married, having a baby, and so on–before allowing yourself to feel gratitude and joy. Need more motivation? Ramadan is one month in the year in which we are meant to reflect on our lives, feel for the poor and be grateful for what we have and who we have in our lives. Use this month to train your self to be grateful all year round and once you become oriented toward looking for things to be grateful for, you will find that you begin to appreciate the simple pleasures and things that you previously took for granted. Throughout the month feel the beauty of gratitude and remember the verse in the Quraan that reminds us : “If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]”. However, your gratitude should not be a reaction to getting what you want, but an allthe-time gratitude, the kind where you notice the little things and where you constantly look for the good even in unpleasant situations. Today, start bringing gratitude to your experiences, instead of waiting for a positive experience in order to feel grateful; in this way, you’ll be on your way toward becoming a master of gratitude. Wishing you and your family a happy and blessed Ramadan. July 2013

Avoid Holiday Pressure to Schedule Your Birth As we approach the holiday season of Eid and Ramadan, many pregnant women experience pressure from family or their doctors to “schedule” their baby’s birth around festivities and travel plans. Be aware, however, that scheduling a baby’s delivery without a compelling medical reason can put you and your baby at risk. “Few doctors want to be pacing the halls [during the holidays], waiting for a mother to deliver,” said Marilyn Curl, CNM, MSN, LCCE, FACCE and president of Lamaze International in a recent article on GivingBIrthWithConfidence.org. “So it’s not uncommon to see a surge of women with normal pregnancies being told that there might be an issue and that they should consider scheduling the delivery, coincidentally, right before a holiday.” In addition to pressure from your doctor, families often feel stressed about the uncertainty of the baby’s arrival and how it might compromise the celebration of their holidays. Some women also fear that their doctor won’t be available and will agree to a scheduled early delivery to guarantee that their doctor will be available for the birth. “My first baby was born on Christmas Day, so I can really understand the pressure mothers feel. After building a relationship with your doctor over the course of your pregnancy, developing plans or expectations about your holiday celebrations, and reaching a point where you are physically exhausted and ready to not be pregnant anyway, moms begin to feel like it is ‘no big deal’ to just get the birth over with,” says Sarah Paksima, Certified Doula and Lamaze Childbirth Educator. “But is a scheduled delivery, whether through induction or cesarean, really worth it when either the mom or baby experience a complication as a result? Nothing shows your love for your baby more than to allow your baby all the time he/she needs to make the most important journey of their life, according to their own timetable.” There are some seriously compelling reasons to think twice before agreeing to a scheduled induction or cesarean. Keep in mind that due dates are not precise and research confirms that babies are healthiest when labor begins on its own, which for some mothers is 42 weeks. When a baby’s birth is scheduled, often the baby is delivered just a little too early. “A growing www.citypageskuwait.com

body of research shows that giving a baby those last few weeks or days inside the uterus can be crucial to the baby’s health. Babies born even a “little” early face risks including breastfeeding difficulties, learning and behavioral problems, breathing problems, increased chance of time in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and risk of death,” states Cara Terreri, blogger for the Lamaze blog GivingBirthWithConfidence.org. As the mother, you can help your baby avoid a premature birth by paying attention to the following red flags that might signal being pressured into an unnecessarily early scheduled delivery: • The doctor suggests that the baby is too big and will be easier to deliver “a little early” • The suggestion is made that your doctor won’t be available for a holiday delivery or will be “booked up” • The timing of the delivery is centered on travel and celebration schedules • Holiday stress is driving feelings of wanting to get the pregnancy “over with” Cara suggests the following if you feel you are being pressured into an early delivery: • Ask your doctor if you need to make a decision right now. If not, ask why not? Few decisions need to be made on the spot unless the mother or baby are clearly doing poorly. • Research your options. Use credible sources of information, like Lamaze, Childbirth Connection, Mothering Magazine’s online forum or your doula to see what the research says and talk to other moms about their experiences. • Make a pro/con list. Label your pros and cons with “medical” vs. “personal” and weigh the “medical” pros and cons more heavily. If you are talking about a major medical intervention like cesarean or induction and

you don’t have a good list of cons, it’s a good sign that you need to do more research. • Trust your gut. Your instincts are geared to protect you and your baby from risk. Listen to what your gut is saying in the context of the research. • Find support. It’s hard to disagree with your doctor, so be sure that you go into your appointments with someone who can help you have an informed, evidence-based conversation about your best options and support you in your wishes.

Health Benefits of Strawberries Everyone knows that strawberries are delicious. However, did you know just what a nutritional powerhouse they are? Here are some reasons to include strawberries in your diet. Strawberries boost immunity Strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin C. Most mammals--except for humans-have the ability to produce vitamin C naturally, which is why it’s so important to get your daily requirement. Vitamin C is a well-known immunity booster, as well as a powerful, fast-working antioxidant. A 2010 UCLA study discovered that the antioxidant power in strawberries becomes “bioavailable” or “ready to work in the blood” after eating the fruit for just a few weeks. Strawberries promote eye health The antioxidant properties in strawberries may also help to prevent cataracts—the clouding over of the eye lens—which can lead to blindness in older age. Our eyes require vitamin C to protect them from exposure to free-radicals from the sun’s harsh UV rays, which can damage the protein in the lens. Vitamin C also plays an important role in strengthening the eye's cornea and retina. While high doses of vitamin C have been found to increase the risk of cataracts in women over 65, researchers from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm note that the risk pertains to vitamin C obtained from supplements, not the vitamin C from fruits and vegetables. Strawberries help fight cancer Vitamin C is one of the antioxidants that can help with cancer prevention, since a healthy immune system is the body’s best defense. A phytochemical called ellagic acid—also found in strawberries—is another. Ellagic acid has been shown to yield anti-cancer properties like suppressing cancer cell growth. Strawberries also contain antioxidants lutein and zeathancins. Antioxidants are scavengers to free-radicals and neutralize the potentially negative effect they can have on our cells.

www.citypageskuwait.com

Strawberries keep wrinkles at bay The power of vitamin C in strawberries continues, as it is vital to the production of collagen, which helps to improve skin’s elasticity and resilience. Since we lose collagen as we age, eating foods rich in vitamin C may result in healthier, younger-looking skin. But vitamin C isn’t the only naturally-occuring wrinkle fighter found in strawberries. Researchers at Hallym University in the Republic of Korea concluded that ellagic acid visibly prevented collagen destruction and inflammatory response—two major factors in the development of wrinkles—in human skin cells, after continued exposure to skin-damaging UV-B rays. Strawberries fight bad cholesterol Luckily, strawberries also contain powerful hearthealth boosters. Ellagic acid and flavonoids— or phytochemicals—can provide an antioxidant effect that can benefit heart health in various ways. Researchers at the Clinical Nutrition and Risk Factor Modification Center in Toronto studied the effect of strawberries on a cholesterol-lowering diet and concluded that adding strawberries to the diet reduced oxidative damage, as well as blood lipids—both of which play a role in heart disease and diabetes. Strawberries regulate blood pressure Potassium is yet another heart healthy nutrient, and with 134 mg per serving,

strawberries are considered a "medium source," according to Alberta Health Services. Potassium can help regulate blood pressure and may even help to lower high blood pressure by acting as a buffer against the negative effects of sodium. With their impact on the reduction of LDL, inflammation and high blood pressure, strawberries have earned the title of one of the most heart-healthy fruits you can eat. Strawberries aid in weight management Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the best defenses against type 2 diabetes and heart disease, not to mention just plain good for your overall well-being. Strawberries are naturally low calorie (around 28 kCal per serving), fat-free and low in both sodium and sugar. Strawberries do contain natural sugars-though total sugars are fairly low with 4 grams per serving— and the total carbohydrate content is equivalent to less than a half slice of bread. Triple your serving to 1.5 cups and you'll have a snack that's less than 100 calories and much healthier than those pre-packaged 100-calorie snacks! Strawberries promote pre-natal health Folate is a B-vitamin recommended for women who are pregnant or trying to conceive, and strawberries are a good source with 21 mcg per serving. Folate is necessary in the early stages of pregnancy to help in the development of the baby’s brain, skull and spinal cord.

Dr. Nazia Nausheen

SUMMER HEALTH CONCERNS FACTS OR FICTION

Dr. Nazia is a Certified Medical Doctor. She also holds an MBA in Sales and Marketing. Disseminates valuable information in her extensive medical seminars and workshops. Readers should look forward to her regular articles on women health and other general health related issues.

Dear readers – Ramadan Kareem! Wish you all healthy and safe fasting. Thank you for your lovely feedback to my previous articles and I hope to receive your comments and suggestions in the future as well. As we are still in summer and it will stay with us for a while so this month I decided to write about the health myths buzzing around summer pastimes such as swimming, camping, and picnicking. People have a hard time letting go of word-of-mouth wisdom, even when faced with good evidence to the contrary. Myths stick with us because when you’ve heard them from your grandmother and mother and important adults in your life, you believe those things. Remembering the many warnings that swimming and outdoor activity inspire, I dug into some of the most pervasive summer health myths to find out whether they’re true.

Myth1: Mosquitoes bite people who have “sweet” blood. Truth: This myth is not 100 percent wrong. Apparently one in ten people are

really attractive to insects, to mosquitoes. It may be something as simple as our blood type (mosquitoes are really into Type O); our physical appearance (if you're big and/or tall, mosquitoes may be attracted to the extra CO2 you give off); our scent (mosquitoes are into floral perfumes, and sweat, of course); or what we are wearing (black clothing emits more heat, which mosquitoes like). As for keeping them away, wear long sleeves and long pants when outside and use DEET-containing repellent. Just avoid spraying it in your eyes. Follow package directions closely, and wash your hands after use and off your skin before bed, unless you’ll still be exposed to mosquitoes. If you’ve had adverse reactions to DEET, spray Picaridin-containing repellent or wear permethrin-treated clothing you can buy in sporting goods stores.

Myth2: Don’t swim on a full stomach.. Truth: It is believed by many that you should not swim for at least an hour after

eating, as it could be dangerous. This old wives tale has been told to kids around the world and has become more or less a popular rule of swimming safety. But according to experts, this should be laid to rest. The theory is that the process of digestion increases blood flow to the stomach - away from the muscles needed for swimming - and leads to cramps, which increase the risk of drowning. A study has suggested that while swimming strenuously on a full stomach could conceivably lead to cramps, for most recreational swimmers the chances are small. And at least one study that looked at drowning in the United States found that less than 1 percent occurred after the victim ate a meal. But meals that include a drink or two are another story. In 1990, for example, a study of hundreds of drowning deaths among adults in California found that 41 percent were alcohol related. So the conclusion is, Swimming after a meal will not increase the risk of drowning, unless alcohol is involved.

Myth 3: Swallowing water- melon seed is bad for you.

www.citypageskuwait.com

Truth: Swallowing a few watermelon seeds won’t do any harm. Our bodies try to digest them but can’t, so the seeds pass directly through our system. Stay hydrated and continue to eat normally and everything will work out. If someone

were to chew up and eat every seed in a watermelon, the only danger would be overdoing fat and calories for the day. One cup of seeds contains 602 calories, 31 grams of protein (about the same as a chicken breast) and 51 grams of fat, a day’s worth for most people. Small children might imagine that watermelon seeds could sprout in their stomachs (or be tricked into thinking this by a mischievous sibling). There have not been any reports of that happening — and it’s unlikely, given how strong digestive acids are — but in 2010, a pea seed did sprout in a man’s lung: A seed he had aspirated grew a half-inch-long sprout and had to be surgically removed.

Myth 4: Too much air conditioning can make you sick. Truth: This myth has its roots in the

early 20th century when researchers studied how chilly temperatures affected the mucous membrane of the nose. They speculated that this could lower resistance to infections. But as we know today, a chill doesn’t cause cold or Flu, You have to be exposed to a virus to get a cold. But if the vent isn’t clean, it can expose you to mold that can worsen allergies. So it is advisable to check and change your air conditioner vent every six months to get relief from allergy symptoms.

Myth 5: Scratching a bug bite makes it worse. Truth: This one is true. If you scratch a mosquito (or other bug) bite vigorously enough to break the skin, the bacteria from underneath your fingernails could cause a skin infection. You’ll know that the mosquito bite is infected because it will look worse, rather than better, as the days go on. An infected bite might also itch more than an uninfected one. Myth 6: Put butter on a sunburn. Truth: Studies show that butter is just a

moisturizer with no specific burn-healing properties. A better home cure can be cool ice-milk compresses (crushed ice and milk on towels) are soothing. Coolness is anti-inflammatory, and the milk is mild and not acidic, so it won’t irritate skin. Ibuprofen, another antiinflammatory, can also be helpful taken with water. Then keep the skin well moisturized to help it heal after a day or two when the burn is cooled down. But if your sunburn blisters or swells, see a doctor for topical steroid creams or oral steroids.

GYNECOMASTIA Need to Get Something Off Your Chest?

Most men like breasts, but NOT on themselves. Gynecomastia or the abnormal enlargement of glandular tissue of the male breast can be a disturbing and devastating condition for a male patient. Gynecomastia involves the excessive development of breast tissue in males, leading to the appearance of female breasts. It can result from an imbalance in the hormal levels in the body, it may occur at any time but is more common during puberty. Some medical conditions as well as side effects from medications and drugs can also induce Gynecomastia. Gynecomastia must be distinguished from Pseudo-Gynecomastia which is the presence of fat deposits in obese men. This condition is also humiliating for overweight boys and adults. It can occur on one or both sides of the chest. It is important to consult with a medical specialist to determine the cause of Gynecomastia. It can usually be diagnosed by a physical examination and medical history. Further tests may be necessary to determine the underlying cause. Treatment of underlying conditions may improve the disorder, however if not effective the only course of treatment is surgical. Breast reduction surgery can be done in cases of severe Gynecomastia. As well, if there is an excessive amount of fat tissue, liposuction can be performed to allow for a

return to a normal male chest appearance. The surgery can be done on an outpatient basis, you do not have to stay overnight in the hospital and can usually go home the same day. In smaller cases the surgery can also be done using only local anesthetic and IV sedation allowing for an even more rapid recovery.

Male Patient 5 days after liposuction of chest

Gynecomastia and Pseudo-Gynecomastia can be physically and emotionally distressing for a male patient. The embarrassment males will feel with their colleagues or friends can cause severe insecurity and shame. It can affect a males ability or willingness to participate in many activities with friends, in sports and in relationships. It is a treatable condition through surgery that can allow a patient to regain his confidence and self esteem. If you are suffering from Gynecomastia it is recommended to get an opinion from a plastic surgeon to find out about your options for treatment. It is not necessary to live with this condition. Contact Lenses Modern technology has made contact lenses more comfortable, healthier and easier to wear, thus enabling most people with vision correction to wear contact lenses. How do contact lenses work? The contact lens rests on the clear outer surface of the eye (cornea). It is held to the tear film through adhesion and by pressure from the eyelids. As you blink, the eyelid moves over the contact lens causing it to move slightly. This allows the tear film to flow beneath the contact lens, providing the cornea with nutrients and flushing debris out from under the contact lens. Contact lenses are used to correct myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia.

Dr.Saud Al-Anezi

Specialist Orthodontist

31

Dr. Saud Al-Anezi is a Specialist Orthodontist working for the Ministry of Health in Kuwait. Dr. Saud gets an indescribable joy giving a beautiful smile to his patients after removing their braces. His favorite quote is "Do what you love and love what you do" Twitter/Instagram: @q8braces

My braces doctor (Orthodontist) told me that I need to remove teeth prior to my braces treatment, why? Orthodontics (Braces Treatment) is a branch of dentistry which deals with problems of the teeth alignment or jaws problems and it aims to improve the facial appearance and the smile of the individual. Throughout the history of orthodontics there are myths and dilemmas that are until now are not solved or completely understood. Removing teeth (Extraction) to make space before the braces doctor starts the treatment is one of the most extensively debated among doctors all over the globe. Going back to the late 1800s and beginning of the 1900s, orthodontics was established as a distinct specialty in dentistry. The credit must be given to Dr. E. Angle (born in Herrick, PA) who is considered the " father of modern orthodontics". He believed that removing teeth is not necessary and that the jaw (Dental Arch) should accommodate all the teeth. He treated all his patients with this philosophy. However, after he passed away, his students noticed that, after treatment, teeth became crooked again. They began to think that removing teeth is essential to

establish a good and stable outcome. Nowadays, with the developments of new techniques in orthodontics, doctors start to believe what Dr. Angle believed in over 100 years ago. The current literature suggests that each individual case should be considered on its merits. That is to say, there is no such thing as removing teeth is always required or vice versa. Certainly, if the decision was made not to remove teeth before treatment, then, there are advantages obtained such as the patient doesn't have to go through this process ( which is not a pleasant experience to most people) and treatment time, theoretically, would be shorter. Nonetheless, it must stated that, removing teeth is sometimes required not only to make space to align all the teeth,

but also in individuals with prominent faces, that could also improve their facial appearance and smile. The risk of attempting braces treatment without taking teeth out in individuals with prominent faces is to make the facial appearance worse . The decision to remove teeth or not is based on and dictated by several factors that the doctor will bear in mind. Examples include, the amount of crowding(crookedness), whether teeth stick out or not, if there is a discrepancy of the facial jaws i.e. the maxilla (top jaw) and the mandible(bottom jaw) and how wide are the jaws. If the jaws are narrow, then there are special and contemporary devices that widen the jaws which provide space hence the doctor would be able to align the teeth without removing teeth. In conclusion, I personally examine my patients thoroughly before I make the decision, although I try to avoid removing teeth whenever possible, I do remove teeth in some occasions to reach the ideal outcome.

Parkour, the new art form to move around Mohammad A. Alattar is one of the few athletes to do “Parkour” and “Freerunning.” The young Kuwaiti explains what the new sport entails and how it’s all done.

Mohammad A. Alattar Please introduce yourself to our readers? My name is Mohammad Alattar. I’m a 24 years old, Kuwaiti, Red Bull parkour athlete. I’m the 1st Red Bull Parkour Athlete in Middle East & Africa. I am also the 3rd Red Bull Parkour Athlete in the world among the only 4. I’m honored to be sponsored by Adidas.

Tell us about your education? I graduated from GUST (Gulf University for Science & Technology) with a bachelor’s degree in English Literature.

What do you do for a living? I’m currently working as a part-time translator in one of the companies in the private sector.

Please explain what is parkour and freerunning? Parkour or Freerunning is the art of moving from one point to another as fast and

www.citypageskuwait.com

as safe as possible, and overcoming any obstacles in our way through climbing walls, crossing gaps, vaulting over benches, and jumping from high places in cases of emergencies. In other words Parkour/Freerunning is the art of adapting to the surrounding environment through body movements. The flips, acrobatics, martial arts, and breakdancing touch is added to the freerunner’s style to add a kind of beauty to the movement. However, it is not necessary. It is also the number one watched art on the Internet and has a huge range of viewers.

Tell us how you got into freerunning and parkour? I was introduced to the world of Parkour by one of my friends after I graduated from High School. Knowing that I have 11 years background of karate and one year of rock climbing, he knew I’d have a passion for these kinds of extreme arts, or at least the curiosity to try. Ever since then I couldn’t imagine myself not freerunning. It started as killing of freetime, but it turned into hobby and became a lifestyle.

{Dare 2B Different!}

33

Who was your inspiration? I had many inspirations but mostly my inspirations were Red Bull Athletes Ryan Doyle, Marcus Gustafsson & the Tempest Freerunning team.

Tell us about the first experience? How was your parent's reaction? (Laughs) The first video my parents saw of me freerunning was by coincidence. They saw a video of me jumping from my room’s window in the first floor, which was about five meters high. They called me and started shouting and I was trying to explain this was a new art. They told me, “You call this an art? The art of suicide?”

July 2013

34

{Dare 2B Different!} Well, after sometime and after few TV interviews and shows they were convinced that this is the art of the new century and it was something I’m talented in.

What kind of training did you undergo? Are you currently upgrading your skills? Depends on what I see myself lacking in; sometimes I practice high jumps and flips. Other times I try to focus on flow and vaults or even try working on big tricks like double flips.

What are some of your best locations for freerunning in Kuwait?

Tell us about the Red Bull competition? The first Red Bull competition in Kuwait was in 2010 and it was called “Red Bull Urban Jump” it was a local competition judged by Ryan Doyle. There were around 50 participants in two categories, which were speed and freestyle. With all the support from my friends and family, and with the cheering from the audience, I got the first place in the competition. In 2011, Kuwait hosted the world’s freerunning championship which is “Red Bull Art of motion,” me and two other teammates, Yousef Alattar and Abdulmohsin Alroomi, got qualified to be the only three Kuwaitis to join 17 professional athletes from different parts of the world and represent Kuwait.

What are your usual rituals before you go freerunning?

Personally speaking, I think the best location for freerunning is Failaka Island and I’m sure many freerunners would agree that it is.

Eyes on the obstacle, mind on the technique, and trust your body.

Tell us of any unusual experiences during your running and jumping experience?

When you are jumping and freerunning, what usually comes to your mind?

I was in Lebanon in June 2012 with my cousin Yousef Alattar to shoot a TV commercial for Gulfnet, which included many freerunning shots. One of the shots I had was jumping from a highway bridge on a truck below the bridge. I was hanging on a rail on the bridge and cars passing by couldn’t see we are shooting a commercial since the crew below can’t be seen from above. So everybody in every single passing by car was opening the window shouting at me thinking I was about to commit suicide. It was so funny.

How did Adidas come to know about you and what is your relation with the Adidas brand?

What are your other hobbies besides freerunning? Besides freerunning, I do fitness, and gun shooting from time to time.

Not much as I always try to keep my mind free when freerunning. When I’m freerunning I enjoy every moment of the airtime I get.

Adidas knew about me through Red Bull as they have a good relation in Kuwait. Both sides worked on to benefit me as a parkour athlete and by June 2013 I signed the sponsorship contract with Adidas. Who doesn’t love the three stripes? I mean, I’m so in love with the brand whether because of the cool clothing that most celebrities in the world wear, like Snoop Dogg and Katy Perry, or the technology that they put in the shoes, which makes the best freerunning shoes ever!

What can we expect to hear about you in the near future? In the meantime I’m getting ready to participate in the world’s freerunning championship “Red Bull Art of Motion” which will be held in Santorini, Greece, September 2013. In addition, I’ll be holding few freerunning workshops for beginner and advanced freerunners.

Are you aware of your thoughts in the stunt or is it all over so quick? The thoughts are all about the technique and good execution of the movement and it is over so quick.

Your message to us at CityPages magazine? I’d like to thank you for interviewing me in your magazine and for shedding the light on unique Kuwaiti talents. I’d also like to tell any Kuwaiti who has a unique talent to keep doing his/her best no matter how much people make fun of you, no matter how frustrated of the lack of support, no matter how many times you get knocked down just stay strong until you achieve your goals because you don’t know who’s out there watching you and might support you one day.

Fighting Fit with Street Style MMA There’s something about thick jigsaw mats in a vast room which gets my adrenaline going. A solitary boxing bag hangs on an S-hook in a corner while next to it, tires of various sizes are neatly stacked on top of one another.

A faint trace of boxing liniment permeates the air and at one end of the room, lies a cornucopia of Mix Martial Arts (MMA) kit; Thai pads, boxing mitts, gloves, you name it.

What’s interesting to note is that the seminar again was advertised via social media, mainly through Instagram and I for one, was quite impressed with the 20-individual turnout.

I’d like to tell you that right now I’m in heaven but alas, I’m actually standing in the training grounds of Fight Club Kuwait in good ol’ Salmiya.

In the 2-hour seminar, Master Mehdi and Al-Askari took participants through various MMA fitness drills to warm-up before teaching them basic self-defense maneuvers one could use to get out of a tricky, sticky situation.

On the 28th of June 2013, Fight Club Kuwait and Club Fit organized the country’s first free self defense seminar. Organized under the umbrella of the Kuwait Fitness & Health Club Association (KFHCA), this event was led by Club Fit owner Abdullah Al-Askari and Muay Thai Master, Master Mehdi Sultan. When quizzed about the idea behind the seminar, Al-Askari is astute to point out Ktown’s fascination with MMA. “We get a lot of people asking for street style self-defense courses and these queries are predominantly from females. There’s been a big buzz this past year on MMA thanks to the GFC hence we thought we’d organize this seminar.”

www.citypageskuwait.com

“Ideally, street style self defense is used to disarm your assailant to give you the opportunity to get away,” says Master Mehdi. Master Mehdi, whose fight school is 50 members strong, taught participants various chokes, clinches and standing guards as well as basic boxing moves. Having fought around the world (Thailand, Brazil, Miami, Sweden and Europe), this 32-year old Kuwaiti has 176 pro fights to his name. Aside from muay thai boxing, Master Mehdi is also a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (No-Gi) with his fight lineage stemming from John Jacque Machado (one of the five famous Machado brothers renowned for their prowess in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu).

Al-Askari who’s trained under the tutelage of Master Mehdi for a couple of years now says he favours this sort of MMA based group training. “It’s much more interesting than learning mix martial arts in a one to one personal training setting. We get a lot of females wanting to participate and I understand why as it’s great for weight loss and keeps you super fit,” he says. Both Al-Askari and Master Mehdi are in agreement that there’s a sort of realness to this style of training and its application in a real-life situation. “Our classes are usually 2 hours and 45 minutes long,” says Master Mehdi. “The first hour is a warm-up conditioning format which challenges your fitness stamina. The second hour, one learns fight technique and drills and if you’re a seasoned student, you’ve the opportunity to spar with others. The last 30 minutes are body weight conditioning exercises.” “The muay thai classes are great,” quips Al-Askari. “Everyone learns from one another and the class is executed in a way where your mental strength and focus is challenged. As such, aside from the physical benefits, one is instilled with selfconfidence knowing that they are really able to protect themselves in any sort of situation.” Fight Club Kuwait is located in Salmiya, off Khansa St, Building 2. Classes run on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.30pm-8.30pm. For more information, please contact +965.9492.2280 or email m.s@fightclubme.com.

Maha AlRashed

CHEK Certified Exercise Coach

Understanding the CHEK Program Hello everyone, I hope this article finds you well and healthy. As my first contribution to CityPages magazine, I thought I would introduce myself and explain what I do exactly. Some of you may have not seen the interview in last month’s issue that gave a brief of who I am, so I will use the next few paragraphs to do so. My name is Maha Al Rashed, I am a CHEK Exercise Coach here in Kuwait. This would be the point where I would be asked “what is CHEK?”; well CHEK is the study of movement and posture using a holistic approach. CHEK (Corrective Holistic/High-performance Exercise Kinesiology) was created by Paul Chek in California, after spending several years researching the human body and studying from the best in the fields of physiotherapy and sports medicine. Our approach as CHEK Practitioners is quiet different to others practitioners in the field. The CHEK program was designed by Paul Chek to be a multi-disciplinary one, through his experience, he learned that the human body was too complex to rehabilitate with isolated specialties. When a client comes to us with a certain problem (back pain, shoulder pain, knee pain etc) we look at the body as a whole; you are not a knee or a shoulder or a spine, but a human being as a whole. There are several key factors that affect the body, yes you may feel pain in your back, or your knees, but did you know that it could be something like your shoulder that’s causing it? Most orthopedic injuries are idiopathic, meaning that there is really no known reason for them (waking up one day with a pain you can’t explain). Yes you feel great after taking your medication, but the question that remains is, have you really solved the problem? We are trained by the CHEK Institute to look at lifestyle and nutrition by focusing on the 6 foundation principles (nutrition, hydration, sleep, movement, thoughts and breathing) as well as pain in order to achieve the best results possible, for something as simple as inflammation from a food allergy that you are not aware of could be what is causing you so much pain; pain is just the body’s way of telling you that something is wrong, that the body has reached its limit, and we teach you how to listen to your body and know when something is “off” before you reach the point of pain. When a consultation is requested the process begins by an assessment. Our assessment entails us taking specific and exact measurement of the spine. 3 points of reference are used (C7/T1, T12/L1 and L5/S1). Once those are pointed out we use special tools created by Paul Chek to begin collecting the measurements. We also look at the client’s pelvic tilt by measure certain angles in order to find any form of imbalance in the pelvis. Once all the measurements are taken, we then begin to test the client’s core function, and though many people believe they have a strong core, 9 times out of 10 the client will fail regardless of your profession and training age, with a strong core a person’s likelihood of back injuries is reduced dramatically! Finally, we tailor make a program for the client that adheres to their lifestyle and work demands looking at the 6 primal movements patters (push, pull, gait, squat, lunge and twisting). We will be covering in more detail the 6 foundation principles as well as the 6 primal movement patters in future articles. www.citypageskuwait.com

What is the revenue model for this App. as I see the App. is free on AppStore?

The App. is currently being offered for Free on the iTunes store worldwide. The revenue model is Ad. based since we team up with selective clients providing great themes that would please the user of the App. as well as the business entity, which we deal with. Overall, it’s mutually beneficial for both the clients we choose to team up with and the user of the actual app itself. Our advertisement model is completely revolutionary since it allows the Business Owner to spread their logo/brand instantly and reach consumers they would otherwise not reach through the Instagram platform. Traditional print advertising is limited to the print model itself, yet this App. breaks the traditional barriers by allowing the message to spread across countless social media channel streams. Moreover, we care about the user experience of the Application. Therefore, we have a strict quota of themed-ads per month, which is why you wouldn’t notice an actual advertisement is taking place unless you dig in deep into the application itself.

How has the App. ranked locally and internationally?

We have reached the 3rd Overall ranking in Kuwait as well as reaching the number 1 spot in the Entertainment Category for the Kuwaiti Market. What was surprising is that we broke the top 10 Ranking in the Entertainment Category in South Korea! We reached the top ten Entertainment Category Ranking in 3 countries.

How does the chemistry between you two work? What is the contribution of each of you?

Photographer: Abdulaziz Al-Soraya | Location: The Regency

Wenayan: I currently deal with the dynamics and business development of the Application itself. Moreover, I study the local market in order to team up with select clients who would benefit from the application in terms of sponsorship as well benefiting the users. Faisal: I deal with designing and creating beautiful themes that change dynamical within the local and external environment. When I see a users returning to our Application it means I have done my job well and I am producing visually aesthetic products. Both • We generate ideas for the future. • Ongoing research on what’s next. • Decide which themes to produce relative to the current environment.

What has been the key to the success of your App.?

The success of the App. has largely been from creating a beautiful simple-to-use user experience application, which provide dynamically changing themes almost weekly. Moreover, the themes are localized themes for the Arab region, which allows our users to relate and respond to something recognized. Coupled with the popularity of the Instagram platform we are able to produce a product that spreads viral messages to users instantly. Finally, our application is ever changing, July 2013

{Interview} allowing the user to utilize new and exclusive themes that are uploaded almost at a weekly level.

What are your future plans?

The future is bright and we intend to keep it that way! We plan to use our skills, Wenayan in Mobile Application Development and Faisal in Design and UI experience to good use by constantly producing a better user experience in ArabGram as well as future Apps.

What are your hobbies?

Faisal: Graphic design, Interior design, and Photography Wenayan: Scuba Diving, Travelling, Reading, Social Media, Motorcycles, and Adventure Sports.

Is the App available only for iPhone or is it also compatible with other devices?

ArabGram is currently available in iTunes for iPhone devices only. However, we are currently working on an Android version for all those Androids fans out there!

Behind the creative mind of

Abrar AlZenkawi The up and coming fashion illustrator gives you an insight into her imaginative world. See what inspires, makes her tick and how she got to where she is.

How did you get started in fashion illustration? Since I was a kid I was so into fashion, models and drawing.

Did you grow up in a creative household? Well, my mom is quite creative.

What gives you inspiration before you draw? Beautiful people and creative things; usually photo-shoots and stuff, but of course when I illustrate or draw it I give it my own twist.

talking to me about Notsi, who draws and complimenting without knowing that it was actually me.

What is your greatest accomplishment thus far? Every success no matter how small or big it is, is an accomplishment.

Who do you look up to the most in the fashion industry? Locally and internationally. Lady Fozaza is actually a story of success that inspire, internationally there are a lot! For example, Victoria’s Secret models Miranda Kerr, the Hungarian model, Barbara Palvin and the illustrator, Hayden Williams, and everything beautiful in general!

Have you had any challenges in your career so far? Actually, when I choose what I want to draw it’s easy, but when it’s a specific request it’s kind of challenging because I have to keep in mind what the other person wants too not just how I want to draw it.

What are some goals you would like to accomplish in your career? I keep having goals and say that’s all I want, but once it happens I’m like, “no that was too easy, I want to achieve more and more.” My main goal is to illustrate or work with something big such as Vogue or Harper Bazaar or ELLE magazine, and maybe get my work to New York.

When did you start to realize you were gaining popularity? Once people started contacting me to request some art work and compliment me, also telling me how much I inspire them. There was this one time when someone was www.citypageskuwait.com

Have any designers reached out to you? Yes

What celebrities have reached out to you about your work? Well, internationally Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner actually loved my illustration and posted it. Also the famous Blogger Chiara Ferragni and Barbara Palvin actually commented on the illustrations I did of them.

Do you have a muse? Someone that always sparks your creative juices? A muse? Travelling somehow makes me creative and refreshed.

Do you have a special place you like to be while you’re drawing? Actually, it doesn’t matter where I am, as long as I have my music and no one interrupts me or watches me while drawing.

Will you have your own fashion line in the future? I used to design in the past and make accessories, but right now I don’t really have the time, but maybe in the future I will do collaboration with a designer.

Where would you like to be in five years? Somewhere where my work is appreciated and can get creative.

What type of music do you like? Who’s your favorite artist? I listen to everything, but my favorite is trance, house and techno, very loud music. I’ve got a lot of favorite artists like David Guetta, Afrojack, Chris Brown, and somehow I like Lana Del Ray’s music.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself! I talk, move and do things really quick. I can’t stand slow motion and over sensitive people, they get on my nerves! I’m very direct and some people just can’t handle that.

If you were not doing fashion illustrations, what could you see yourself doing as a career? As a career, I think I would’ve been a Nutritionist or a Chief Expert in making healthy food, a Radio presenter or a TV host. I have many things in mind because I like trying new things. I’m actually a stylist and art director working with the Fashionet company, which is fun!

What can we expect next from you? You’ll know when it happens

Any words of advice to anyone who wants to get into fashion illustration? With practice and loving what you do, you can do anything. I’ll be giving a fashion illustration course soon with the Fashionet company, which I’ll announce soon.

What’s the best way for fans to get in contact with you?

Healthy Skin this Ramadan

by:

The skin is the body’s external revetment. It’s one of the five senses. Although the skin is thin, it plays a protective role to the organism. We should take care of its hygiene to avoid any perturbation... it’s the mirror of our metabolism. During Ramadan most of the people and specially women suffer and start complaining about many skin disorders caused by the different systems of diet. The famous problem we can realize is the dryness and the desquamation congestive skin. Dry skin means lack of sebum. Dehydrated skin means lack of water……. This dehydration can be caused by internal and external factors. Internal factors: Sickness, shocks, slimming diet, pregnancy and bad nutrition. The vitamins deficiency provokes many skin perturbations. How we should avoid having digestive problem especially after 12 hours of fasting. Your stomach muscles are weak so don’t start eating fast and heavy.

w Start by drinking 4 cups of water, eat fresh vegetables, fruits and soups. w Keep 2 hours between food and sweets and avoid soft drinks during meals. w Don’t eat sweet before going to sleep. w If you eat fast and heavy meals you will feel hot, sleepy, tired and sometimes you can have headache or migraine as well. w All these are caused by the bad and problem digestion characterized by redness on cheeks and transpiration especially on the T zone of the face. w Let your Iftar be very soft like: yoghurt, Salad, soups and fruits. w Take your meal very slowly and drink at least 1 ½ litre of water. w Remember, Juices or hot drinks don’t replace water.

BEAUTY ADVICE: Usually everybody knows the importance of day cream. Because it avoids or opposes water evaporation. The beautician can give you a specific day cream or sun block depending on your age and type of skin and according to active principle. w Prefer using cleansing milk with moisturizing lotion or tonic to clean the face. w Avoid using soap or shampoo. w Water doesn’t clean oil residues, it only refreshes them. You should use lotion after except the mousse or gel cleanser. We can clean it with water only. w Use once a week a soft peeling not a scrub. It helps to remove the dead cells accumulated on the corneas layer who may provoke the desquamation and block the pores. w Peeling helps to facilitate the skin respiration and the absorption of the active principle. w After putting make up, a thin desquamation may appear on T Zone (Forehead, nose, chin). We suggest applying a special kind of moisturizer like ampoule, very concentrated, by massage for 10 minutes. It helps to give brightness and hydration and keep the skin smooth and velvety. Wait for15 minutes and start your make up. w We have a special moisturizer spray to maintain the makeup for 10 hours. We use it after the foundation. w Don’t use too much compact powder.

We have a special machine which can help to facilitate the absorption of ampoule 80% in the dermis. It will ameliorate the skin texture. The beautician can decide according to your skin type and age.

Fresh Masks: You can prepare them at home,

very easy and useful.

Take fresh strawberry or avocado plus 2 or 3 drops of olive oil and 1 drop of lemon. Apply and wait for 15 minutes and then wash it with cold water. Make lotion with carrot juice and cucumber. Apply and wait for 5 minutes and then wash it with cold water.

The best ingredient dehydration:

against

The best ingredients for dehydration are: Jojoba oil, royal gelly, avocado oil, calendula, carrot oil extract, seasme oil, sunflower oil, amino acids, collagen and phyto cosmetics (cactus-balm-raspberry-aloes). www.citypageskuwait.com

It is very important to clean your face at night. Don’t keep your skin wet, if you like to use water. Pulverization during a day and make sure you dry it with Kleenex. The wetness can cause deep dehydration. Put a day cream in the morning. And repeat it as needed (after woudou) or sun block 2 times a day at least.

{Blogger of the Month}

Dalalid (pronounced dala-leed) Please introduce yourself and let our readers know a little bit about where you’re from and say a few words about how you got started in the online world.

My name is Dalal Al-Doub, but everyone calls me Dalalid now (pronounced dala-leed). I’m a fashion and makeup blogger from Kuwait with a pretty active Instagram account. I always loved makeup. After getting great reviews about the way I apply my own makeup and assemble my own apparel, I decided to blog about my experiences. Thankfully, people’s reactions have been supportive. What do you find most challenging about blogging?

Blog Name: Dalalid.com Started from: October 2012 Category: Fashion and Makeup

The most challenging aspect has been blogging under my real name and posting pictures of myself in social networking programs. Many Arab fashion and makeup bloggers prefer to keep their real identities hidden, so they will blog or post pictures of their clothes and makeup techniques without giving away their information or showing their faces online. Now that I’ve overcome this challenge, the other looming obstacle seems to be keeping abreast of the latest developments in the industry. I have a duty to deliver the most recent news and techniques to my followers, so I make sure I remain steadfast in my desire to learn and improve myself.

In your view, why do most bloggers fail?

Because it’s difficult! We’re all busy people. We can’t stop life from happening just so we can do the things we love. So most people fail because they lack the ability to prioritize their daily objectives. This is where a clear, long term, big picture oriented strategy comes into place. It helps one focus on the important tasks and enables consistent productivity. For this, I have to thank my best friend, Nada Faris, whose business lessons and marketing strategy has enabled me to take full advantage of my talents and creativity. What is the biggest blogging mistake you have done?

Mistakes are a natural part of learning, but if one has a strategy and is constantly improving it, he or she can minimize errors. I can say that I have been blessed in this area. After my best friend and I drew a futureoriented map, I treated my social networking presence as a profession. This means maintaining a level of professionalism at all times. Fortunately, my hard work paid off and I seem to be progressing toward my goal.

Is there a special meaning behind the name of your blog?

Can you please give few blogging tips for our readers to build a better blog?

It’s my professional name. My actual name is Dalal. My family calls me Dalali. The ‘D’ at the end refers to my family name: ‘Al-Doub.’ Hence, when added together, I become ‘Dalalid.’

I will tell you the two most important lessons in blogging: 1) Your blog should not be about you, but about your readers. Whenever you blog, remember that you are consciously publishing your articles to a public audience, so organize your blog posts around a certain service. Can you teach them something new that would enrich their lives? Can you help them attain their own goals? And always maintain a level of professionalism. This includes responding to your comments with grace. Many bloggers feel like a personal blog is akin to a personal home. It’s not. It’s a public space and should be treated as such. 2) Keep it up to date. This is of course related to rule number one. If you give people a service in a civilized and friendly manner, they will check out your blog. If you do it regularly, they will continue to view the blog.

Are you a part time blogger or a full time blogger?

Part time blogger, at the moment. How much time do you spend on your blog daily and weekly?

I spend so much time working on my fashion and makeup career via blogging, posting on Instagram, visiting events, and shedding light on the latest industry products and techniques. However, I am still www.citypageskuwait.com

a full-time employee, and I am still a university student, so I don’t spend as much time on the blog as I want. In the meantime, it seems like I blog on the weekends and whenever I can squeeze in a few hours during the day.

of When I first got my bachelors in MIS, I was furious when it said bachelors of art, not Bachelors of science, and it was all because the capital M in MIS for management. Yes management is art yet information system is pure science. Solving mathematical problems, economic regressions, and providing solutions based on statistical approaches is not art, it was mind numbing science. 10 years later As I grew my business experience I got my peace with the word art, As a matter of fact, now, I love it. Like any other rebel who's born in the 80s thinking I wasted 5 years in college it actually paid off. The word art shaped my humble experience and perfected it. In this article I will explain how. When I started working for Think Tank I got obsessed with the word art, finally I get to practice what I learned in my bachelors and MBA. I always wanted to share the concept of design with all its fields including programming (yes, programming is art) with everyone else, by starting designers diwaniya. Think Tank founder Mr. Al Rushaid's background is programming and he was the first to oppose the idea that programmers are designers. To prove my case to him, I provided him and our programming instructors with a programming problem, and as I expected each one of them solved it in a very creative way, only in different approaches, and all of them were perfectly right. If all of them solved it with the same code phrase for phrase only then it would be science. The problem solution variation was there, because of their problem perception, each approached the problem differently. Yet all solutions are perfectly right. Same example can be found in art classes, where art instructors place objects, in the

middle of the class, then ask apprentices to draw it, all sketches will have different illustration of the same object, with different lights and shadows angle. Which is why in my opinion it's all art, it's just a matter of best practices. BBROKI Art Studio, was founded, to serve my thirst for art, in system design and development. Yes we do websites and printed marketing material, all items are designed based on targeted clients, whether corporate or individuals. Each item designed, treated as a system, serving selected crowd. Aesthetics, choice of words, level of complexity, services of products illustrated, are carefully designed to meet client's requirements. The question is, does BRROKI Art Studio provide art or science based services? In my humble opinion its all art, it is all about best practices, engineers do it best, all engineers in different fields, they master the art of resources allocation; due to the fact that all engineers do not think, or "allocate resources" in the same systematic way. Best practices is the corner stone of think tank's teaching philosophy. Think Tank provide designing and programming courses, by providing the best practices in design i.e. when to use vector and when to morph in pixels. A lot of now a days graphic designers, design logos and illustration using Photoshop (application by adobe, to manipulate pictures) it's not a wrong practice yet its not the best one. Drawing with Photoshop is like drawing on limited canvas, however drawing using applications that are based on vector i.e. adobe illustrator, there won't be any limitation to canvas size. So ultimately the use of the drawing itself, defines which method of drawing, hence, best practices. Technology made it easier for artists to express themselves, think tank main role is providing the best tools with best practices.

Cool New Gadgets To Add To Your Wishlist

Arc90 Glimpse The Chrome extension Glimpse is picture-inpicture for a Web browser. Instead of opening a new page or tab, a user enters a site’s address in the Glimpse box. It calls up a streamlined version of the site, so the user can browse it on the side or use the box to compare two pages at once.

This month, our top new gadget picks include a Pelican ProGear Elite Cooler, a Breathometer, and more.

Ryobi Hybrid

Umbra iSpoon

The Ryobi Hybrid is the only yard tool that can run corded or cordless. The seven-pound string trimmer contains both AC and DC circuitry, so a user can switch power sources between an 18V lithium-ion battery and electricity from a socket.

For cooks who like to use their tablets as recipe books, the iSpoon keeps messy hands away from the screen. A capacitive silicone stylus serves as the end of the seveninch-long beechwood mixing spoon.

Breathometer Breathometer is the first smartphone breathalyzer. Users plug the keychain-size device into a phone’s headphone jack and blow into it. The associated app displays blood-alcohol content.

Dyson DC50 Hair can block a vacuum’s airflow and reduce suction when it wraps around the machine’s brush. But hair won’t get caught on the Dyson DC50 tangle-free turbine, which has two counter-rotating brushes that push hair directly into the suction tube.

Eagle Creek Morphus 22 The Morphus carry-on converts to two full-size bags. The top of the 14-by-9-inch wheeled bag zips off to become a backpack. A user then pulls out the rolling bag’s lining, which becomes its new top.

Sea to Summit Spark SpI For summer camping trips, the Spark SpI sleeping bag is the warmest for its weight. Filled with 850loft mature down, it’s rated for temps as low as 46 degrees, and at 12.3 ounces, it packs to the size of a grapefruit.

The Elite insulates better than any other cooler. With two inches of polyurethane foam between double walls and a seal similar to a freezer’s, it retains ice for up to 10 days in 90-degree weather.

Milwaukee 2PC Demolition Screwdrivers

The Milwaukee Demolition Screwdrivers are the toughest on the market. Engineers added a hardened tip and a steel cap to the handle, which a user can hit—co-opting the driver as a chisel—without damaging the tool.

KitchenAid Pro Line Series

HTC One

Roku 3

There’s no need to push food through the Pro Line 16-Cup: It’s the first home food processor to draw food in automatically. After a user throws ingredients into it, an angled blade in the dicing attachment drives the food through a steel grid to make eight-millimeter cubes.

With a superwide aperture and the largest pixels, the camera on the HTC One captures 300 percent more light than any other smartphone camera. More light results in more realistic color and brighter photos.

With the Roku 3, a person can watch a movie without bothering everyone in the house. When a viewer plugs a pair of headphones into a standard 3.5mm jack on the remote, the Roku signals the settop box to send audio over Bluetooth only to the remote.

Volunteering at the Ministry of Youth Affairs and having the trust to be in such position, and giving back something to Kuwait and our generation is definitely a source of pride. July 2013

Travels to Monaco By: Kinda Al-Faris

There are days when the interviewer needs some 'off time', and I decided to spend mine in France with the family. I was lucky enough to get some annual days approved, which were not nearly enough but sufficed to travel to Monaco with my younger brother and his brood. Instead of interviewing people this month, I decided to introduce you to a wonderful little country bordered by France, but considered an autonomous country from its large neighbor in every way.

I have to admit I must be the only Kuwaiti citizen who just never had the urge to visit the South of France, maybe because I'm too smitten by the Greek Islands to go anywhere else. I have to admit though that I am considering returning to this tiny gem of a place next year on my way to wherever I may be heading. Monaco is a small country, with its own governance provided by a ruling family the Grimaldis, whom I'm sure I dont need introduction to. Although it borders France from three sides, it only measures 2.02 KM2 in size; it is considered to be the second most densely populated country in the world with 36,371 inhabitants. Those born there are referred to as Monegasques, while naturalized citizens who originate from France, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland, England and the US are called Monacans. It is claimed that mythical Hercules was once a resident of Monaco. It has the lowest poverty rate in the world and the highest number of millionaires and the highest GDP per capita. Last but not the least it boasts the lowest unemployment rate in the world and has in recent years become a banking center, and a tax haven. You can get there via Nice airport and choose either car or helicopter to transport you there.

At night attend a show at the Sporting Club, where we were lucky enough to catch Alicia Keys this year, after which head to Jimmyz for an after party. Eat at Cipriani or the Beef Bar both highly recommended for good food, and ambiance. A branch of the famous Buddha Bar is located in the center of FonteVille a stones throw from the breathtaking Fairmont hotel premises. If you're a woman make sure you carry flats in your purse, because you will inevitably need them on to navigate the stairs and to walk to and fro, your feet will thank you later. I personally recommend a stay at the amazing Hotel Hermitage where every small requirement is seen to, and for its incredible rooms featuring more amenities than even your own home. The

During the day take a stroll through Monte Carlo where the world famous Casino and Hotel De Paris are located. Sit at the renowned Cafe De Paris and have a club sandwich and a Morelli's ice cream cone for dessert. Go swimming at the hotel pool, such as the Fairmont's rooftop pool overlooking the Mediterranean and grab an ice coffee while soaking up the Mediterranean sun. If like me you are one of those people who love to take in the sights and explore, do so on foot all the way down to Port Hercule making sure to stay hydrated. Due to the hilly terrain, stairs leading to the bottom half of the city will definitely give your legs a work out, although you will find underground tunnels for shortcutting through as well as elevators and escalators leading you up and down the city. Take walk through the Casino Gardens which feature exotic plants and trees which are absolutely beautiful to look at and form a great background for picture opportunities.

hotel was renovated and features a fantiastic Louis XIV decor, which although seems delicate in pictures is actually incredibly breathtaking. The rooms are large, and designed like suites, while the bathrooms are large and feature walk in closets. The hotel is attached to the city's spa Thermes Marins, featuring an incredible indoor sea water pool, and a spectacular view of the port and the sea where you can either soak up the sun or have a drink or a meal. I am still suffering from withdrawal symptoms due to the amount of well being and relaxation I was feeling while staying there. Expect to pay an arm and a leg per night. Bring your credit card for the shopping, (all designer labels) and the casino if you are the type that likes to try your luck. But be prepared to spend a fortune for although well worth the trip, you most likely will return home quite broke. If you're seeking somewhere new to visit I recommend Monaco for a short break from routine, a few days there will leave you feeling up-lifted and re-energized.

Hollywood During the War Years The early years of the 40s decade were not promising for the American film industry, especially following the late 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese, and the resultant loss of foreign markets. However, Hollywood film production rebounded and reached its profitable peak of efficiency during the years 1943 to 1946 - a full decade and more after the rise of sound film production, now that the technical challenges of the early 30s sound era were far behind. Advances in film technology (sound recording, lighting, special effects, cinematography and use of color) meant that films were more watchable and 'modern'. Following the end of the war, Hollywood's most profitable year in the decade was 1946, with all-time highs recorded for theatre attendance. The best we can do is make a case for the leading contenders and let you decide for yourself what actually is the first movie ever. The world was headed toward rearmament and warfare in the early to mid-1940s, and the movie industry, like every other aspect of life, responded to the national war effort by making movies, producing many war-time favorites, and having stars (and film industry employees) enlist or report for duty. The US government's Office of War Information (OWI), formed in 1942, served as an important propaganda agency during World War II, and coordinated its efforts with the film industry to record and photograph the nation's war-time activities. Tinseltown aided in the defensive mobilization, whether as combatants, propagandists, documentary, newsreel or short filmmakers, educators, fund-raisers for relief funds or war bonds, entertainers, or morale-boosters. Films took on a more realistic rather than escapist tone, as they had done during the Depression years of the 30s. Hollywood Canteen (1944), the West Coast's answer to Broadway's Stage Door Canteen (1943), was typical of star-studded, plotless, patriotic extravaganzas, one of several during the war years which featured big stars who entertained the troops. [Originally, the Hollywood Canteen was a nightclub for off-duty servicemen, founded in 1942 by movie stars Bette Davis, John Garfield, and others. It provided free meals and

www.citypageskuwait.com

entertainment, and was located at 1451 Cahuenga Boulevard, off Sunset Boulevard.] Big name stars and directors either enlisted, performed before soldiers at military bases, or in other ways contributed to the war mobilization. Many of the leading stars and directors in motion pictures joined the service or were called to duty - Clark Gable, James Stewart, William Wyler, and Frank Capra to name a few, and male actors were definitely in short supply. Rationing, blackouts, shortages and other wartime restrictions also had their effects on US film-makers, who were forced to cut back on set construction and onlocation shoots. A new breed of stars that arose during the war years included Van Johnson, Alan Ladd, and gorgeous GI pin-up queens Betty Grable and Rita Hayworth. (Betty Grable had signed with 20th Century Fox in 1940 and

would soon became a major star of their musicals in the 1940s.) Some of Hollywood's best directors, John Ford, Frank Capra, John Huston and William Wyler, made Signal Corps documentaries or training films to aid the war effort, such as Frank Capra's Why We Fight (1942-1945) documentary series (the first film in the series, Prelude to War was released in 1943), Ford's December 7th: The Movie (1991) (finally released after being banned by the US government for 50 years) and the first popular documentary of the war titled The Battle of Midway (1942), Huston's documentaries Report From the Aleutians (1943) and The Battle of San Pietro (1945), and Wyler's sobering Air Force documentary Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress (1944).

{Movies}

The Quintessential 40s Film: Casablanca The most subtle of all wartime propaganda films was the romantic story of self-sacrifice and heroicism in Michael Curtiz' archetypal 40s studio filmCasablanca (1942). It told about a disillusioned nightclub owner (Humphrey Bogart) and a former lover (Ingrid Bergman) separated by WWII in Paris. With a limited release in late 1942 (and wider release in 1943), the resonant film was a timeless, beloved black and white work originally based on an unproduced play entitled Everybody Comes to Rick's. The quintessential 40s film is best remembered its superior script, for pianoplayer Dooley Wilson's singing of As Time Goes By, and memorable lines of dialogue such as: "Round up the usual suspects" and Bogart's "Here's looking at you, kid." Its success (it was awarded Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay) made Humphrey Bogart a major star, although his character reflected American neutrality with the famous line: "I stick my neck out for nobody."

War-Related Films Abound: The 40s also offered escapist entertainment, reassurance, and patriotic themes, such as William Wyler's war-time film Mrs. Miniver (1942), starring Walter Pidgeon and Oscar-winning courageous heroine Greer Garson as husband and wife. It was a moving tribute and account of courageous warbesieged Britishers reliving the trauma of Dunkirk and coping with the war's dangers in a village. Alfred Hitchcock, who had recently migrated to the US, directed Foreign Correspondent (1940), ending it with a plea to the US to recognize the Nazi menace in Europe and end its isolationist stance. A variety of war-time films, with a wide range of subjects and tones, presented both the flagwaving heroics and action of the war as well as the realistic, every-day boredom and brutal misery of the experience: Dive Bomber (1941), A Yank in the

R.A.F. (1941), Wake Island (1942), Guadalcanal Diary (1943),Bataan (1943), Winged Victory (1944), and Objective, Burma! (1945). Warner Bros.' Sergeant York (1941), directed by Howard Hawks, was typical of Hollywood offerings about the military - the story of a pacifist backwoods farmboy (Best Actor-winning Gary Cooper) who became the greatest US hero of World War I by single-handedly killing 25 and capturing 132 of the enemy. Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo (1944) (featuring a US bomber named Ruptured Duck) starred Spencer Tracy as Lieut. Col. James Doolittle who carried out the first US bombing raid on Japan. William Wellman's The Story of G.I. Joe (1945) immortalized WWII Pulitzer Prize-winning combat correspondent Ernie Pyle (Burgess Meredith) and his experiences with the men of Company C of the 18th Infantry and their role in the invasion of Italy, John Ford's They Were Expendable (1945) with star John Wayne in a story about the Pacific Ocean's PT boats, Delmer Daves' Destination Tokyo (1943), Zoltan Korda's exciting epicSahara (1943) (with Humphrey Bogart as heroic desert tank driver Sgt. Gunn), and Lewis Milestone's intense, unglamorous war films of struggle, resistance, and occupation: Edge of Darkness (1943), The North Star (1943), The Purple Heart (1944) and the excellentA Walk in the Sun (1945). British director Michael Powell and Oscar-winning scriptwriter Emeric Pressburger joined forces for the war drama 49th Parallel (1941), the war adventure One of Our Aircraft is Missing (1941), and the superb character study classic The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943). The Royal Navy (and Lord Mountbatten) was paid tribute in writer/co-director and star Noel Coward's WW II drama In Which We Serve (1942), co-directed with David Lean in his first directorial effort. It was the most celebrated and patriotic British war film of the era. Director Carol

Reed's pseudo-war documentary The Way Ahead (1944) followed the training of soldiers to fight against Rommel's Afrika Korps. Since You Went Away (1944) was the American homefront version of 1942's biggest hit film, Mrs. Miniver (1942) about the perserverance of a British middle-class family during the Blitz. George Stevens' The More the Merrier (1943) reflected the housing shortage in the nation's capital city during the war years. This is the Army (1943), a 'show-within-ashow' account of Irving Berlin's Broadway stage revue, introduced Kate Smith singing the patriotic songGod Bless America - the US' alternate national anthem. After the war, William Wyler directed a provocative, dramatic Best Picture-winning film about the plight of three returning G.I. veterans (Dana Andrews, Fredric March, and Harold Russell) to the homefront. The multi-Oscar winning picture The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) was produced by Samuel Goldwyn and photographed by Gregg Toland. Non-professional, disabled veteran Harold Russell won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in the film. In two of the film's memorable scenes, Hoagy Carmichael taught double-amputee Russell to play Chopsticks on the piano, and Russell displayed his vulnerabilities to his fiancee (Cathy O'Donnell). Lightening up the wartime mood was Cary Grant who portrayed Captain Henri Rochard, a French soldier in Howard Hawks' genderbending farcical comedy I Was a Male War Bride (1949), who was obliged to dress as a woman to marry an American female soldier (Ann Sheridan).

Fame in the Adriatic Chapter Five

“He can support himself with his own resources.” The preacher continues his sermon on the malignancy of the Jews once he composes himself. I hear Signora Barberino mumbling her consent. She turns to Caterina and says something I cannot catch. Caterina is fake civility, lifting the corners of her mouth into a forced smile, blinking vacuously then leaning in my direction. “First she tells me to be quiet, now she herself is talking.” “But what is she saying?” “How should I know? My mind is there,” she points in Vittoria’s direction, “not here. And if I do not find out immediately my yellow bile will turn choleric and my spleen will explode.” I pat her left thigh. Poor Caterina is going to stew in her own thoughts for three hours. I smile in spite of her ill temper. Yellow bile? Choleric? Spleen exploding? My darling friend, the apprentice of kosmetike, uttering scientific terminology? I would’ve placed more bets on hell freezing over. Glancing at Vittoria I notice that all heads, male and female alike, are tilted in her direction. I wonder if my husband-to-be is looking at me. We’re in the second row from the back on the right side of the aisle and can thus see most of the attendants from behind. Men and women from our village who embraced our leaders’ religion sit among nobles who ride from Church to Church, encouraging villagers to attend service. In Signora Barberino’s case it’s hailing down from the city every once in a while to inspect her patronage, the only Church in Benitses. I don’t find anyone craning their neck in a way to look back in my direction, so I wonder if my husband-to-be decided against marrying me. Did he perhaps see me enter with Caterina and change his mind? Or was it Vittoria who monopolized his attention? Then I wonder if he could be somewhere in the back, preferring to see me without being seen? I make it seem as though I am talking to Caterina in order to peer behind me. But I am jolted again! It is none other than the piercing gaze of the apparition. His deep, blue, penetrating eyes dig into my heart like spears, sending a wave of heat over my body that culminates with my cheeks. I twist back quickly and face the front. His eyes were on me. In me. He wasn’t paying any attention to the sermon at all. I wonder in that moment if, maybe, perhaps, hopefully, he is my husband-to-be. My heart is racing and the www.citypageskuwait.com

heat wave that washed over my body percolates and my skin perspires. Oh God, I think the next three hours will be as bad for me as they are for Caterina, so without thinking I slip my moist palm into my friend’s left hand and squeeze for comfort. “What?” I don’t answer her. I look in front of me, wondering, thinking, hoping. * Three long and arduous hours later, the preacher sums up his sermon: “Remember my brethren they killed our Lord so if we can forgive everything else we cannot forgive this crime.” Caterina lets go of my hand as she springs out of her chair. She straddles my knees, lifting the hem of her dress indecently. She hops and climbs over people until she is out of the row and onto the path to investigate Vittoria’s transformation. The apparition’s eyes glow bright for he is positioned directly behind Caterina’s spot, which is now empty, allowing the eyes more space to roam. I almost depart myself when Signora Barberino says, “Ah Maria, I thought it was you. You look different today. Like a woman.” I smile courteously. I feel the man behind me shifting on the bench as if preparing to leave, but when Signora Barberino asks me, “What did you think of today’s sermon?” he pauses for a moment and then sits back down again. “I…” I don’t know what to say. “I don’t want to be disappointed in you. I have heard great things about you from your father and will not tolerate any modern sentiments about the intelligence of the Volgare.” The what? “Leonardo used to say the Il Decorune is only fiction and not all Jews are moneyobsessed heathens with a tendency toward killing, but like I told him before, I’m telling you now, the Romaniotes should remain in the ghetto. I don’t need to be reminded that they walk among us. There should always be a limit to mercy.” The what? Remain the in the where? But the limit to mercy thing I understand. It sounds a little like my father’s “better cruelty than contagion” speech, so I sweeten my smile, tipping my hat a little forward in agreement. Signora Barberino stands up and adjusts her bonnet. “Wait,” says an icy voice behind me, stirring the hair on the back of my neck into motion. “Answer her question.” Signora Barberino, having turned around, is now facing the man in the dark orchid linen chemise. “What’s your name?” “Names have nothing to do with it,” he snaps back with unreserved choler and pins his eyes on the back of my ear, which burns, turning a fire iron red. “How dare you talk to me like that?”

{Literature} “Maria!” he snarls. He knows my name? I turn around. For some strange reason my heart rumbles. I do not know the source of my fright. He isn’t a sprite, I’m positive. In fact I knew this even earlier when he passed me at Caterina’s. He is an odd young man to be sure made of flesh and perfumes, almost Giuseppe’s age, so why he affects me thusly I cannot ascertain. And the name? How does he know my name? Signora Barberino is now shouting. Some Church attendants pause to look, blocking the exit from the ones behind them. I swallow the lump of dread in my throat with difficulty. “Answer the question.” What question is this? I do not even remember what Signora Barberino was saying. Something about the Volgare? About a ghetto? My father and mercy? Signora Barberino threatens the young man. He keeps staring. I shake my head. I do not know, I do not know, I do not know! His tone is milder now though the gaze remains steadfast. “The sermon, Maria, do you agree with it?” I barely remember the sermon for I was absentminded throughout, only bits and pieces trigger my memory; the way Jews poisoned the beds, or the wells rather, causing the plague in the fourteenth century that killed a third of the European population; the way they killed our Lord which makes them unworthy of our Christian charity; and … nothing, that’s it, my mind is blank. “Just answer the question!” he cries with palpable impatience. His command merges with Signora Barberino’s shrieks and my discomfort, and all of a sudden, a roar like Jupiter’s thunderclap takes everyone by surprise. “Lorenzo!” The name echoes in the aftermath. Lorenzo, the eccentric with the disturbing gaze, turns left, and upon acknowledging the man who screamed his name with a stiff nod, gets up. Signora Barberino’s face contorts with recognition. “Lo-renzo? The Lorenzo? The penniless child who became the wonder of Venice? The exile? The new Fugger? What was the phrase they chanted? ‘If you’ve money with Lorenzo, tell Lucifer good morrow’?” Lorenzo doesn’t acknowledge her words; instead, he throws me a look of disgust and walks toward the angry man who shares the same black hair and blue eyes. Signora Barberino sings her next phrases as though she is accompanied by Vincenzo Capirola’s “Ricercar Primo” on the Church’s organs instead of the lute; as though she is at court surrounded by a flock of nobles and not in a fishing village in Corfu where her charges fly right past us: “So the Pellegrinos have come to Corfu! You mark my words! I’ll see to it personally that you Barnabites get evicted! Even this dung-infested village will be out of your reach! Do you hear me de’Pellegrino? Not one day and already you’re stirring trouble! You thought you did it all on your own, ha! You thought you could invent resources? Now even your name brings shame upon the Libro D’Oro. Agostino Gardenidis was right about you! The devil in human form!” She might as well have spoken Hebrew. Still, I try to decipher her words and come up with the following: Blue-eyes is called Lorenzo de’Pellegrino; he came to Corfu with Arturo on the ship that docked this morning; he used to be special back in Venice, before being exiled. I choke on Fugger, Barnabites, and the Libro D’Oro. The mention of Alfonso’s father stirs my interest though and I make a mental note of asking Caterina’s husband-to-be about my apparition. Lorenzo’s father, a frigid iceberg, nods. Like father like son, I suppose. I see a woman hurry to his side and the three of them—the dreadfully morose trio— walk out of the building. The block of people who became spectators at the commotion now file out as well. Signora Barberino takes the Lord’s name in vein (and everyone including the preacher himself ignores her because she financed the building of the Church). My mother locates me and gestures for us to meet outside. When I make my way toward her, I remember why I came to Church in the first place and how I’ve been hoping for the past three hours that Lorenzo would be my suitor! I cross myself when I exit.

79

The same crowd that blocked the pathway inside the Church is now on the square, standing so close together, making me feel as though I were in the marketplace. I squeeze and meander this way and that until I reach my mother, who screeches upon seeing me, “What did you do in there?” “Nothing!” I answer back. “It wasn’t me.” “But I heard him call your name.” Yes, that startled me too, but I shake my head. “I don’t know him. I swear. We never spoke.” Mother rubs her collarbone in public and says more to herself than to me, “I foresee trouble from the new neighbors.” When she looks at me again she smiles, which takes me by surprise because my mind is still caught up with the earlier commotion. To add upon that, the crowd does not dissipate! What is preventing all these people from going to their houses? Something has agitated the port’s inhabitants who block the streets outside the Church. This better not be a revolution. Or a war! I have little nerves left to deal with such calamities. It’s certainly neither the time nor place for a colossal smile, but mother stretches her facial muscles regardless and says, “My darling, my one and only, turn around, for tonight you might embark upon the first day of the rest of your life.” Oh Lord…the suitor! I spin. I duck left and right. The crowd is a major hindrance, preventing me from seeing anyone and to make matters worse, a really fat, old Italian the size of maybe six Giuseppes blocks my view. And then the block of human flesh addresses me by name and I realize that my mother is flashing her smile at him! No. No. No. I’ll take the madman over the fat man any day. At least Lorenzo is a mystery just waiting to be solved. The beaming adult tells my mother, “My, my, she’s grown. I remember her as a baby. What did Leonardo want to name her?” Mother chortles. “Jose, but I would have none of it!” “Yes, yes, and none could blame you for though the rascal claimed it was in honor of Saint Joseph it was obvious he intended to raise her as a boy. Serves you right for not giving him actual boys, you know.” “I tried,” she said earnestly. “But after six miscarriages and two early deaths I settled for my darling girl, but don’t you worry a moment for even though Leonardo had taught her to read and write I made certain that she blooms into womanhood. She will be everything you desire in a wife. That is a guarantee.” “No,” I say suddenly, surprising everyone including myself. And before they browbeat me into concession, I ask, “I’m sorry, who is this man who has been present during my birth and who expects me as a wife?” Mother says, “This is Antonio Ziani, Maria, a very close friend of my late husband, and currently a member in the Maggior Consiglio.” I don’t care at all that he is a politician in the Grand Council, one of the most prestigious positions in the republic; I wouldn’t have cared less if he was Apollo himself addressing me from Mount Olympus! And this isn’t just about the weight or the age for that matter, although both of them fill my tiny body with a humongous dread. It is about how my mother is selling me the way an Armenian grocer sells his fruits! Take this apple! It is a delicious apple! You will never eat another fruit for the rest of your life! Why must I marry the senator? Is it because he is rich and I am poor? Or is it because he gave my father a seven-year-old slave five years ago and is now expecting to collect his due? But you know what? I won’t run away like a little girl. I straighten my back and look him dead in the eyes and say, “Sir, if you know my father, then you know that I have been raised differently than other girls, however, my gender is not an imperfection. It is a blessing for Maria Botticelli intends on becoming the first Italian woman to receive a university degree and she cannot sully that dream with marriage.” Too dramatic? July 2013

BOOK CLUB The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner As sad I was to have finished the Twilight Saga, as excited I was to have another independent book to be written within the series for a later read. The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner (2010) could be considered as book five of the Twilight Saga although it isn’t directly linked; the four previous books will still make sense without it. It’s a story about a small character that was introduced briefly in book three: Eclipse (2007). As Eclipse (2007) was written from Bella’s perspective we only saw Bree Tanner briefly, even without knowing her name. However, in this book, it’s all written with Bree’s conscious which gives us an insight into the dark side of being a newborn (young newly made vampire). This story takes place in Seattle, a few months prior to the well-known Eclipse (2007) fight between the Cullens with the werewolf and the newborns of the vampire army. Bree was one member of the twenty two members of the vampire army, led by newborn vampire Riley. They were asked to train, feed, lay low and not attract attention to themselves without really knowing the cause of their existence. As the newborns form groups within the bigger group, Bree teams up with a vampire called Diego, together they set off on adventures on their own, discovering more and more things about their vampire nature; things that goes against the lies that Riley fed them and their group to keep them under control. Together they realize that they are dragged into war between a clan of their own kind for vengeance that they themselves don’t understand. Also, they witness the involvement of the Voltury with this whole mess and realized that the Volutry aren't as just as they claim to be. In the end, Bree was a ray of hope for the Cullens as they wanted to keep her in the family and turn her www.citypageskuwait.com

Next Month...

into a productive member, teach her their new ways of life and their feeding habits. However, the Volutry saw her as a threat to them so they got rid of her. This story is a short book of two hundred pages, but ties up the story of Twilight (2005) into new prospective. It will explain a lot in terms of the Eclipse (2007) book and will tie things together. The fans will not be disappointed. And I suggest this book to be read at the end as it was originally intended to be read. Written by the great author Stephine Meyer who famously wrote and co-produced the Twilight Saga as well as the new book/movie The Host (2008).

Next Month I will be covering a British novel by one of my favorite British authors Melissa Nathan, called Acting Up, which was previously named Pride, Prejudice, and Jasmin Field as the book talks about a stage adaptation of the Jane Austin Book. Jasmin met her “Mr. Darcy” and its hate at first sight.

July Book Releases Here are the releases for July that are expected to make a splash this summer.

Fin & Lady

Amy Falls Down

Fin & Lady takes place in 1964 in Greenwich Village, where an eleven year old boy named Fin moves from a small dairy farm after his parents die. He moves in with his older sister, Lady, who he has not seen in six years. She is wild and so are the times. This is a book about how the siblings take care of each other and live in the midst of personal and social chaos.

Amy Falls Down is a literary but comic novel about what happens when Amy Gallup, a teacher and book reviewer, literally falls down into a bird bath in her backyard. After her fall, she gives a rambling interview that is taken for genius rather than recovering head injury. Amy becomes a bit of a star and begins writing her own book.

Freud's Mistress

The Never List

Freud's Mistress is a fictionalized account of a historical relationship that some have speculated -- that of Sigmund Freud and his wife's sister, who came to live with the family for a time.

The Never List has received a lot of pre-publication press as a thriller to watch. It is the story of two teenagers who are kidnapped and held in a dungeon by a sadist. Only one survives. Ten years after they are found, he is up for parole, and the survivor must investigate the creepy letters she has been receiving. It is being billed as a page turner, and the author is being compared to Gillian Flynn, whose Gone Girl was the big book of summer 2012. I think you'll need thicker skin for this one though!

Nadia Al-hassan is a student in Ireland, studying Journalism. She is passionate about writing stories and poetry. Nadia loves helping people with her stories. She believes that words are so beautiful and powerful.

The Man Who Changed My Life His name was Ted Smith. I remember that day as if it was yesterday and I could never possibly forget. He was tall and handsome with jet black hair and eyes that were the colour of the ocean. I came from a very small village, we never had new people visiting, so it was a surprise to see Ted.

I don't think I had any. "I have none," I whispered. He started to laugh but then stopped when he saw the serious look on my face. "You have no dreams at all? Well you must come up with some! This world is full of beautiful things, you must want to explore it."

I lived a very boring and ordinary life, I was twenty-one and back in the 1940s, women were made to stay at home with their parents until they got married. So, I was basically trapped in my own home. But enough about me for now, let me tell you the story about Mr. Smith.

I fell in love with Ted Smith that day and he opened my eyes. I always thought my role in life was to stay at home and raise a family. But I always wanted to travel the world and meet new people, perhaps get a degree and become somebody. Hope poured into my heart as I thought about all the dreams that I could make come true.

He was a mysterious man but charming, he had a smile that could light up the whole room but nobody ever knew much about him. He rarely ever spoke and it was very clear that behind those eyes, there was a story hiding. I bumped into him one evening as I went to fetch some eggs from the shop. "I am very sorry sir," I said with embarrassment. He gave me a warm smile and continued to walk.

The next day I walked into town and saw Ted standing tall under a tree, I approached him with a huge smile on my face. "I must go and I don't know when I will be back," he whispered into my ear. The disappointment and sadness must have shown on my face because he then said, "Don't worry, I will be back again one day. But promise me you will explore this world and live life to the fullest."

Weeks went on and I spoke to him on several occasions but it was that particular day that I would never forget. I was sat by the window at a small but cosy coffee shop, day-dreaming and picturing a world full of adventure, a world I would never see. "Ma'am, may I sit with you?" As i looked up, there he was, as handsome as ever. As he sat down with me, he started to tell me about his life, the adventures that he went on and wars that he fought. I laughed so much that day and as I listened to all the stories he told, my heart swelled up with excitement and love.

He left that day and my heart ached. However, his wisdom had touched me and I yearned for the adventures that were awaiting. A year passed and I found the courage to leave home, unmarried and ready to see the world. I got a degree in Business and I travelled to so many countries, I did what he told me to do and I was so grateful to have met him.

"Tell me what your dreams are, what do you want to do?" he said in a very soft tone. I looked away, quite shy as I always thought dreams were just for children,

I am now 65 years old and I have been everywhere and all my dreams have come true. I never saw Ted Smith again but he changed my entire life and he will always have a special place in my heart.

{Entertainment/Music}

The Selector is a weekly program launched by the British Council on Superstation Radio Kuwait FM 99.7 every Wednesday at 4pm, bringing listeners one hour of Britain’s latest music. The Selector is made up of all styles of contemporary music and features interviews and special studio sessions from new UK artists as well as a mix of UK’s best hits with the aim of bringing together both UK and Kuwait’s culture.

This July on the Selector Goldierocks played the latest UK music beginning with Tunng, Misty Miller, All We Are and Gorgon City. Later on there was a special coverage on the London Festivals done especially for The Selector listeners. The current biggest record in the UK is by Misty Miller, but the session started off by Thumpers, playing their song named “Unkinder”, which is out on Transgressive Records. The session later turned the corner into Dubstep, but in the beginning remained in what Goldierocks called “indie territory”. To begin the indie playlist Catfish & The Bottlemen’s new song which was produced by Communion Records. The producer of this track has previously worked with Mumford and Sons and Daughter! The Selector team have an exclusive coverage on the three different Festivals when festival season began in England. The crew who work at The Selector are “massive fans” of the festivals which take place, so they thought they would introduce their listeners to these events. Field Day is one of the larger festivals in England, which attracts 30,000 people. It took place at Victoria Park on Saturday the 25th of May this year, and it was the first music festival

to kick off festival season. Tom Baker, who is the Field Day Programmer described it as “an eclectic mix of all genres of music.” This is the 7th year that Field Day takes place, and it is “a celebratory event, with a mixed country theme of a village.” Dated secondly, the Beathearder Festival took place on the 5th of July this year on a farm in Lancashire- North of England. “It is three days and nights made up of everything that might make you want to dance” According to Nick Chambers who is one of the coordinators and founders of the festival, the beauty of the Beathearder Festival is that the “Gospel” about it is “spread by word of mouth”, and so everybody who is present at the festival knows everybody else. Finally, taking place from the 5th until the 8th of September this year, Bestival Festival. Which has been taking place annually for ten consecutive years, and this year they will have Elton John, alongside many other artists from a diverse music background. According to Rob Debank, he was with his wife and some friends who wanted to create a one-day festival “that would make you dance,” and “it turned into a three-day festival in 2004.” The beauty of Bestival is that it gives off this feeling of “escapism because of coming across ” and getting on a “ferry to get on an island” claims Debank. He says it is mainly beautiful because you feel like you are on a “magical enchanted land” then you “get yourself lost in the world of Bestival.”

**Please note that The Selector will be aired at 23:00 on Wednesdays during Ramadan. www.citypageskuwait.com

Ramadan Mubarak Kuwait!

!‫كيف نقوم بتعطير املنزل في الكويت‬

Flourish the house, Ramadan is here!

‫و تقبل اهلل طاعتكم‬... ‫مبارك عليكم الشهر‬

The Holy month of Ramadan is here, where Allah the Almighty blesses us with his mercy. The month of Ramadan is well known in our society with the gathering of family and friends, and in such occasions Kuwaitis tend to seize those happy moments using the best traditional fragrances from oud Bakhour along with other perfumes. Today’s article is about when and how to blossom the house or the venue during the Holy Month where social gatherings is at its burst.

‫ شهر رمضان تكثر‬،‫تعودنا في بيوتنا استعمال العطور في كل املواسم و باألخص في الشهر الفضيل‬

We usually spray fragrances and use the Bakhour particularly before the visitors arrival and after the banquet, to get the best of it, try using Oud and/or floral perfumes to give the splendor scents that will be admired by visitors, after that, bits of Indian Bakhour would result a beautiful combination yielding a delightful scent all over the place. As we all know, in Ramadan we seldom have a social event without a feast, be it breakfast, “ghabga” or even “sohour”. Dining rooms has its own fragrance measures and ideas. It is recommend using light fragrances 15 minutes before serving food, fragrances such as citrus or floral lavender to avoid jumbling the scents with the food smell (and sometimes the perfume particles itself from mixing with the food). Least but not last, at the end of the feast, guests will head to the wash, therefore we highly recommend more than one perfume to be available near the sinks, to satisfy the different guest’s tastes, like Aljora, jasmine, lemon and also mixture of sandalwood. Finally, it is better to use a piece of Bakhoor Only in the guest room after the meal while avoiding spraying in the room, a step to prevent food and perfume smell. Tips: l

Use the perfume first then the Bakhoor.

The Bakhour price range depends on the quality , but it is fine to use the low price Bukhour for the everyday use along with the perfume.

l

It is best to set the room temperature between 19 – 21 degrees Celsius to reanimate the aroma. l

Sophie Katairi

the woman behind Sophie’s Closet Turning her passion for jewelry into her own business, Sophie Katairi talks about how she started the store, challenges and her future plans. Sophie Katirai is a born Canadian from Iranian origins. Her parents lived most of their lives in the UAE, where she is based now with her family. Sophie grew up in a family where jewelry was very important, her mother studied jewelry design and her grandmother was very fond of jewelry, she was surrounded by unique pieces from the women in her family and grew to have this obsession with jewelry and accessories.

Please introduce yourself to our readers? My name is Sophie Katirai, and I’m the founder and managing director of Sophie's closet. I was born in Canada from an Iranian background and now I’m based in Dubai with my husband.

Today costume jewelry is very popular as to when I started the shop. The trend of costume jewelry is rising and so is the competition. I’m always looking for unique pieces to keep ahead of the game.

Can you virtually walk us through your boutique? How did you get interested in jewelry? Who inspired you? My mother and grandmother had a big role in my interest in jewelry. The women in my family always wore real diamonds and a lot of jewelry. I see jewelry as an art form.

When did you decide to start your online boutique and why? When I started to watch Gossip Girl, I fell in love with the jewelry the girls were wearing and started to search for the exact same pieces. I got so excited over this, I wanted to share the jewelry I had found and let other women get their hands on the beautiful pieces seen on celebrities. In 2009 I had setup my online website soon followed by a Facebook page.

Sophie's Closet is located on the 11th floor of Single Business Tower on Sheikh Zayed road in Dubai. When you walk in you have every brand set in glass vitrines or displayed on glass shelves, some of the pieces that were worn by celebrities have photos displayed next to the jewelry items worn by a celebrity.

What are some of the renowned brands that are available at Sophie's Closet? Vintage Chanel and YSL, Kenneth Jay Lane, Shourouk, House of Harlow, Ciner, Badgley Mischka, etc.

Who are some of your personal favorite brands? What is the process of selection of items for the boutique? I select pieces as if I am buying them for myself. I also look at what celebrities are wearing and what's in fashion. Ultimately, I opt for classic pieces you can keep forever. I do my own research, and I’m always on the look for unique pieces, everywhere and at any time!

Why did you feel the need to have a physical showroom for Sophie's Closet? Many clients want to physically see the pieces and try them on. Sometimes, clients walk in with their dress and try to find the perfect piece to fit with their dress.

I’m absolutely in love with Ciner, the high-quality costume jewelry brand from New York. I like Kenneth Jay lane as well as Shourouk.

What are your futures plans? I would like to buy pieces I can alter and change to my own style and taste and plan to start my own line of jewelry in the near future.

What are your other hobbies? I like to paint and make sculptures. I love to collect vintage china, especially with flowery prints, as seen in the show room and I love shopping.

How often do you add new pieces to your store? I add new pieces to the store on a weekly basis and I’m always looking for new pieces.

What are some of the challenges you face? www.citypageskuwait.com

Your message for us at CityPages magazine? Take care of your jewelry, even when they are not made from precious materials, you can give them to your daughter one day. Always stow your jewelry in pouches and always wear your jewelry after you have done your hair and make up. Try to avoid lotion and perfume anywhere near your piece of jewelry.

SRT Viper GT3-R Customer Racecar

As SRT Motorsports prepares to contest the trials and tribulations of the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first time in close to a decade as a factory backed outfit, they have released a ‘customer’ version of their Viper GTS-R racer. Officially named the SRT Viper GT3-R, the slightly detuned Viper is a turn-key race car for those wanting to campaign in one of the numerous GT3 friendly race series around the world. Developed in partnership with Riley Technologies — the same company responsible for Viper’s ALMS and Le Mans campaign — the GT3 spec Viper comes complete with an unrestricted V10 producing 680 hp. Almost as startling is the sheer amount of torque this thing puts out. At a reported 640 lb-ft at the wheels, it doesn’t look like Riley took much liberties in taming the Viper for the more demure customers. According to SRT, the GT3-R uses many of the same parts as its big brother in the ALMS. The car is available to purchase for a reported $459,000 and deliveries are expected by the end of the year — just in time to get in some good winter testing before the 2014 racing season starts. The GT3-R will be eligible for FIA GT3, United Sports Car Racing GT Daytona, Pirelli World Challenge GT, NARRA and SCCA/NASA competition without much modification. Riley have managed to squeeze all this performance into a package that weighs just under 1300 lb — making the car an absolute speed machine. Best of luck to those campaigning a Viper in 2014, it’s shaping up to be a mighty quick car.

GeigerCars Ford GT 1000 by NG Motorsports

This is a photo shoot of a Ford GT 1000 built by Geigercars, the tuner from Munich, Bavaria in Germany. Upgrades were done by NG Motorsports who later did a photoshoot with photographer Matthias Moos revealing its new power stance and look. The engine upgrades with included mapping and enhancing the supercharger resulted to the Ford GT punching out 711 HP in total. Sometime back when Geigercars began building programs for the Ford GT, they provided one of the most powerful packages alongside tuners like Hennessey. The managed to give a 29% increment in power over the stock output. This was 701hp (523 kW) and peak torque of 837 Nm (617 ft-lbs) and this resulted to a 0-100km/h time of 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 340 km/h. They managed to do this through the use of a larger supercharger with increased boost pressure from 0.8 to 1.25bar. The ECU was also re-calibrated to suit the new demands. The Ford GT is however naturally one of the few American cars that will comfortably dine in the same table with Italian sports cars or even those from Deutschland. With it’s 5.4 liter modular V8 engine it kicks out 550 hp and 500 lbft of torque comfortably at 3750 rpm. A Ricardo six-speed manual transmission with limited slip differential is able to give it a top speed of 330 km/h. The prices for one of the 4038 units produced will vary, a complete stock one is above the $100K mark but considering that the MSRP had reached $149,995 in 2005, prices must be around that mark.

Horoscopes & Famous Birthdays

Try to find a way to stay grounded, because July looks to be an exciting month! An ongoing battle between old and new will cause major drama as Venus and Saturn Square off on July 1, and an overtly energetic Mars enters supersensitive Cancer on July 13, putting a lot of your personal relationships on unstable ground. Pleasure-seeking Venus enters neat and organized Virgo on July 22, and later that same day the Sun enters sweltering Leo, so some shakeups in your relationships, most likely your love life, are probable as you struggle for more control and recognition. However, a rare Grand Trine composed of earth and water energies occurs on July 29, bringing with it a healing feminine power to soothe over any roughness as the month comes to a close.

Projects and responsibilities around the home will keep you busy and tied down. Also, family members will be needy and emotional, and you'll have to be the nurturer. This might feel uncomfortable for you, but others need your attention, love, and support. You will also be busy with other relatives and neighbors and active in your community. This would be a good time to take a short course or seminar having to do with a hobby or interest. Life will continue to be exciting and unpredictable. Your love life will be interesting during the latter part of the month.

You might have to ask for support from others regarding your career this month. One or more people may not understand that you will have a hard time balancing business obligations with the need to put energy into building your career and nurturing your personal life. If you have a domestic partner, he or she could feel neglected or rebel in some way. With Mars in Gemini, you'll communicate frankly, be curious about life, and long to travel. If furthering your education is a goal, you might take steps to apply to a program or sign up for courses.

A relative or neighbor might need some help or emotional support this month. Do what you can to make him or her feel nurtured, comfortable, and safe. A New Moon on July 8 will serve to reinforce this idea. You might need to step in and offer to prepare food or drive someone to an errand or appointment. You will be focused on getting advice on financial matters and investing early in the month. Later in the month you will have warm and happy experiences with close family. You might want to plan a family party, reunion, or barbeque.

Life will be busy and active with plenty of social commitments this month. You could be spread too thin and need to prioritize what you choose to get involved with. You'll enjoy the variety and the chance to meet new people. Spend some time and energy working on your personal finances. Look at ways to increase your income and secure your future needs. Whether you need to step up your retirement investing or straighten out your credit situation, now is the time to focus and get help if you need it. With many planets and a New Moon in your sign this month, you will be confident and comfortable with yourself. This will be a powerful time of change and exciting new developments. Be open to possibilities and act on opportunities when they arise. Be careful with your finances later in the month and try to stick to a budget. You'll be feeling generous and you could overspend, especially on luxury items or pampering. Relationships will be important, but don't take anyone for granted. If you're in a committed relationship, know that things are changing. The eventual outcome will be for the best.

Venus in your sign this month will bring out your flirtatious, charming side. Others will be drawn to your personality. You'll be able to get what you want in the personal and business realms with little effort. During the last two weeks you will be very confident and make several new connections. For part of the time, however, you'll shy away from the world to seek peace and comfort. You could make a new start regarding getting in touch with your feelings and allowing time to nurture yourself. A Full Moon in Aquarius on July 22 could bring upset in a personal relationship.

Saturn is still in your sign. This planet tends to bring frustration and setbacks when it nears your natal Sun. With this Saturn transit, you'll need a lot of patience, a willingness to be better organized, and the determination to take issues seriously. Several planets in Cancer will be in good aspect to Saturn, so these will help mitigate some of your problems if you communicate respectfully and are willing to learn from your experiences. Mars in Gemini will bring the urge to communicate honestly and directly with your partner about shared money, assets, and investments.
