message from the

department

The staff and management of the Parks & Recreation Department proudly present the Fall/Winter Play Plan. We are looking forward to providing varied and interesting opportunities in our parks and buildings. This year, the department was recognized as a finalist in the National Recreation and Parks Gold Medal Program and is one of four nationwide to receive that distinction. A grand winner will be named in October ~ we hope for that win! This award recognizes that Winter Park has outstanding programs and facilities, and for that, our staff is very proud! ~ Your Parks & Recreation Team

The George Morgan Ward Memorial Park, more commonly known as Ward Park, is extremely active. Nearly every sport including soccer, lacrosse, football, basketball, tennis and track, has a place in this 66-acre property. Recently, the parking was upgraded, paved and made more organized which resulted in additional spaces. Also, fields were reconfigured while still maintaining regulation sizing for most sports. This enabled even more teams to schedule their games and practices. All of the multipurpose field lights were also upgraded. This new lighting is not only energy efficient, but more focused on the field of play, which has resulted in less light spill into other areas. The lighting system is computer controlled so that the lights are only used when needed and not on for the entire evening.

country club &golf course The Winter Park Country Club & Golf Course is the second oldest golf club in the central Florida area. The course makes its way through the downtown Winter Park area and provides a challenge to even the most experienced golfer. The club’s history includes play by the likes of Hogan, Snead, Sarazen and Hagen. With its narrow, tree-lined fairways and postage-stamp, bunker guarded greens, this course will provide a test for every shot in a golfers arsenal.

fitness trails Fleet Peeples Park

Fishing is not only allowed but very popular in most city parks. Lake Mendsen, in Martin Luther King, Jr. Park at Denning Drive and Morse Boulevard is a great fishing spot. It is stocked by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission primarily with channel catfish. Largemouth Bass, bluegill, sunfish and blue tilapia can also be found. There is a 14” minimum size for keeping the bass and a five bass limit in this lake. The other species have no size limit and the maximum for keeping is 50 fish. A freshwater fishing license is required. Be sure to attend our annual “Test the Waters” fishing tournament for children held on October 5. And don’t forget that fishing is also popular at Dinky Dock Park and Kraft Azalea Garden.

Located along a 3-mile path that is used for biking, walking and skating. This path surrounds Lake Baldwin.

Howell Branch Preserve A 1/5-mile paved path features 10 exercise stations. The park has natural scenery to enjoy on your walk from sunrise to sunset.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Park A 1/2-mile walking path nicely decorated and features a fitness area with hydraulic fitness equipment such as cardio stepper, chest and back press, and ab crunch from sunrise to sunset.

Ward Park A 1/3-mile trail features fitness stations that are geared toward our senior population but can be used by all ages. Included are a bench stepper, balance station and forearm rolls.

There are two municipal cemeteries that are managed by the Parks & Recreation Department. Palm Cemetery is located at New York and Webster avenues and is 17 acres. Pineywood Cemetery is located at Lakemont and Glenridge avenues ad is 11 acres. With over 18,750 grave spaces in total, these cemeteries have served our community since the late 1800’s.

palm&pineywood cemeteries

Palm Cemetery As early as 1883, Palm Cemetery was on land privately owned by Loring A. Chase. Then known as Chase Cemetery, the land accepted burials as early as 1898 which is the earliest recorded burial on the property. In April 1906, the 17-acre property was officially deeded to the City of Winter Park by Mr. Chase, who was buried in Palm Cemetery on August 24 the same year. You can find his monument, a marble obelisk over five feet tall, in the southeast corner of the cemetery. The inscription memorializes his historical importance to the city as “One of the founders of Winter Park in 1886.”

Pineywood Cemetery Pineywood Cemetery has been in existence since the early 1900s like Palm Cemetery, but the city’s ownership did not occur until 1970. It was formerly managed by the Pineywood Cemetery Association and deeded to the city in early 1970. Recorded burials date back to the 1890s and a rich history of Winter Park is recorded on the markers with the names of the families who are at rest in Pineywood. The cemetery represents the city’s history, its people and families.

Memorial pages On our website, you will find an online memorial page with multiple personalization options that allows you to memorialize your family’s legacy for generations to come. The memorial page features: D a genealogy section, helping link families together D a specialized section for Veterans to add details about their military career helping to honor those who have served our country D an online burial and ownership search of all the properties in the cemetery Be sure to visit the cemeteries web page at cityofwinterpark.org/ cemeteries to find or add your family members to the site.

just the facts... Major achievement Did you know that national accreditation through Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies (CAPRA) is an extensive multi-year process which includes the completion of an application and detailed self-assessment report, a site visit by a committee of experienced park and recreation professionals, and a final assessment completed by the agency and the Commission? Accreditation requires agencies to respond to 144 standards representing elements of effective and efficient park and recreation operations.

To become accredited, agencies must fully meet 36 standards deemed fundamental to a quality agency and at least 92 of the remaining standards. CAPRA accreditation is the only national accreditation for park and recreation agencies, and is a measure of an agency’s overall quality of operation, management and service to the community. Accreditation is valid for a period of five years.
