Mayor’s Christmas Appeal The City of Wanneroo Mayor’s Christmas Appeal once again will bring Christmas cheer to local families in need. The Mayor’s Christmas Appeal has become a Wanneroo tradition with hundreds of local families, community groups and business operators supporting the appeal each year since its launch in 2000. Collection boxes for gifts and food items were placed at various locations around the City including local libraries, community centres, schools, the City of

“The Mayor’s Christmas Appeal is a unique, community driven event, supported by residents of the City of Wanneroo and we thank you for kind donations which reflect our fantastic community spirit,” Mayor Roberts said. Donations will be given as Christmas hampers to families receiving help from our City’s financial counsellors with any leftovers to be given to emergency food agencies. As well as kind donations from residents, the City of Wanneroo is also home to its very own Santa; Selwyn Anderson, who each year handcrafts wooden toys to donate to the appeal. Mr Anderson spends time in his workshop carefully constructing and painting toys for both boys and girls.

Mayor Roberts said seeing the community work together to help others through a stressful and important time of year is something we can all be proud of.

“Thank you for working together to create a Christmas to remember for those less fortunate,” she said.

Making Wanneroo home

So what happens when you relocate and life as you know it is completely uprooted? What items, traditions and pastimes have travelled with you to your new home? The Wanneroo Regional Museum is exploring this theme in a new exhibition and wants to hear your story, to find out what residents moving to the City of Wanneroo brought with them to their new home. Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts moved to Australia 29 years ago from a quaint village in the Yorkshire Dales, famous for its waterfalls and caves. Although Mindarie is well and truly home for Tracey, she was visibly upset when telling What’s Happening about the day she left the United Kingdom. “To this day I still hate airport departure lounges,” Tracey said. “I can remember looking at the faces of my family and seeing the sadness in my grandparents’ eyes - that’s when it really kicked in that I didn’t know when I would be seeing them next.”

While the lure of an Australian lifestyle was an exciting prospect, Tracey’s transition to life in Australia was anything but easy. A number of years later, married with a baby, her husband was diagnosed with cancer and passed away. “It would have been so much easier to go back to my family, but Perth had already become home,” Tracey said. Along with great friends and a supportive community, the comforts of her previous home helped Tracey through the tough first years in a new country; hand-knitted jumpers, teddy bears, a trunk filled with childhood ornaments, and her Nanna’s old recipe book. “I brought items that would trigger a memory,” she said. “My mum was a fantastic knitter and I still have the beautiful handknitted jumpers she made for me, even though it’s never really cold enough to wear them here. “And Nanna’s Yorkshire pudding recipe is still a family favourite.” In the following years Tracey married her husband Peter and had another son.

Museum Curator Natalie James and Mayor Tracey Roberts reviewing the exhibits.

Luckily for Tracey, many of her family members also eventually made the move to WA. “Immigration is not for the faint-hearted, and to leave all that is familiar is a real test of character. There are things I do miss - but this is definitely home,” she said. “I look at my two boys and their lifestyle, and I am so glad we made the decision to settle here, and make Wanneroo home.”

Keeping your home safe from fire

Mayor Tracey Roberts is imploring residents to follow specialised advice so we can all keep safe in the community. “We have seen some devastating results of fire recently and I am urging everyone to please follow the precautions to prevent tragedy,” Mayor Roberts said. “We live in a hot climate and your safety is always a number one priority. It’s time to act smart and keep your homes and families free from harm.” Follow these simple steps to keep your home safe. Remember these precautions are just as important in the suburbs as they are in rural zones.

Ensure you have installed smoke detectors in your home and they are in working order.

All firewood, timber, petrol and kerosene will also need to be stored well away from your home.

Clear all vegetation, rubbish and flammable material away from the walls of your home as they may fuel a fire. A simple tip to remember is to create at 20 metre circle of safety around your home free from all these items.

Winter brings in the fallen leaves and debris, so as summer begins, clean your gutters out, trim branches away from the house and ensure trees are not growing near buildings.

The summer season is upon us which means time for swimming in the sun. Surf Life Saving WA has some great tips for all our residents to stay safe whilst having fun! LIFEGUARDS TOP TIPS Always swim between the red and yellow flags When you see red and yellow flags on a beach, it indicates that there is currently a lifesaving service operating on that beach. The lifeguards have chosen a section of the beach that is best for swimming and they will closely supervise this area. Read the safety signs Before you go onto the beach be sure to read the safety signs. This will ensure you are aware of any warnings or dangers on the beach.

Ask a lifeguard for safety advice Lifeguards are highly trained and very knowledgeable about beach safety and conditions. When you arrive at the beach look for and identify the lifeguards. Swim with a friend Swimming together means you can keep an eye out for each other, and if further assistance is required, one person could call or go for help. If you need help, stay calm and attract attention If you are not feeling comfortable in the water and you require a lifeguard’s assistance to get back to shore, stay calm, raise your arm in the air and wave it from side to side.

You should conserve your energy by floating on your back and staying calm. This will ensure you have the energy to remain afloat until further aid arrives.

2014 Australia Day Ceremony welcomes hundreds The City of Wanneroo will again host the biggest Australia Day citizenship ceremony in Western Australia, with more than 600 people expected to be naturalised. Held at the Wanneroo Showgrounds, the new citizens and their guests will be treated to a morning of Aussie themed entertainment, right down to the barbeque breakfast.

2013 has been another busy year in Wanneroo for new citizens, with more than 1800 people becoming citizens between January and December.

“The City of Wanneroo welcomes 7,800 new residents each year, or 21 per day, and many of those are also new citizens,” she said.

This compares to 1,397 in 2012 and 1,004 in 2011, and it is easy to see the increase in numbers.

“To cope with the demand, we scheduled several extra ceremonies this year on top of the normal monthly schedule.

Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said the increase reflected the City’s rapid growth.

Burns Beach Path The proposed coastal path between Mindarie and Burns Beach is one step closer following an environmental study and topographical survey report.

The project is being managed by the Department of Planning, however the Cities of Wanneroo and Joondalup are closely involved as they will manage the constructed path.

While the project is still very much in its initial planning stages, two potential routes for the path have been outlined, with a decision expected to be made after further investigation.

The City of Wanneroo along with the City of Joondalup and Department of Planning contributed funding towards the study.

What’s Happening at the WANNEROO LIBRARY AND CULTURAL CENTRE Nurses: From Zululand to Afghanistan Australian nurses have been going to war for well over 100 years, but their important contribution to Australia’s overseas military operations often goes unreported. The Australian War Memorial’s latest travelling exhibition Nurses: from Zululand to Afghanistan explores the involvement of nurses from the first known Australian in the Zulu War of 1879, right up to the experiences of the male and female nurses serving in recent conflicts and peacekeeping operations. Using the Memorial’s rich collection, the exhibition will highlight the personal stories of army, air force and navy nurses who have served overseas, the difficulties and challenges they faced, and their determination to care for the sick and wounded come what may.
