Pre-registration is required for this free event. Free! On Thursday, June 21, tens of thousands of kids and adults at aquatic facilities around the world will unite for the ninth year in a row to make noise that Swimming Lessons Save Lives™. A global event, The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ (WLSL), will take place over the course of 24 hours at an estimated 600 locations in more than 20 countries. Since its inception, more than 235,000 children and adults have participated in WLSL lessons generating more than half a billion media impressions about the vital importance of learning to swim. The 2017 WLSL event included 41,068 participants from 26 countries. Tragically, in the U.S. drowning remains the leading cause of unintended, injury related death for children ages 1-4, and the second leading cause of accidental death for children under 14. Research shows participation in formal swimming lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88% among children aged 1 to 4, yet many kids do not receive formal swimming or water safety training. O'Fallon's Renaud Spirit Center and Alligators Creek Aquatic Center will both serve as official Host Location facilities for the WLSL 2018 event. Tim Judge Through July 20 Medium: Painting Tim is a self-taught artist from Wentzville. For his paintings, Tim searches the internet for source material and then meticulously paints images in soft, nostalgic tones reminiscent of film photography stock. Tim says that it takes him almost as much time to find just the right source material as is does to complete each painting. He has exhibited at the Wentzville Progress Parks Center and at the St. Louis Artists Guild. This is his first exhibit for O’Fallon.

Youth Soccer League Kids love our exciting eight-game leagues which focus on soccer skills, rules and fun! Leagues fill quickly, so register early! Games are played at Sports Park on Saturdays between 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Parents, we need volunteer coaches! Parent coaches are eligible to have one child’s registration fee reduced if slots are available. Starting July 6, an additional $12 late fee will apply to all registration. Registration ends Thursday, July 26, or when the program fills. Eligibility is based on a child’s age as of August 1, 2018; however, children who turn 4 as of October 27, 2018, may participate in the 4 and 5-year-old leagues. A player should register for both the same league in the fall and spring. The Coaches Meeting will be held August 25 at 8 a.m. for Pee Wee Coaches and 9:30 a.m. for all other leagues. Coaches must attend the meeting prior to receiving their teams’ equipment. Please note: Roster requests do not register a child for the program and it does not guarantee a child a spot in the program. Practices are NOT a part of the league fee, so refunds or team changes will not be made to accommodate practice schedules.

Participants will move to the next class or skill level when all skills from the previous level are mastered. Some classes may seem repetitive, but we want swimmers to perfect their skills in order to advance safely. Please keep in mind that children learn at different paces and it’s common to repeat a class.

The program is composed of 11 course levels:

Weekday classes at the RSC meet twice weekly for four weeks and last 35 minutes. Saturday morning sessions last 40 minutes and meet for seven weeks.

Learn to Swim ’Fallon’s Learn to Swim program is built on teaching aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. Our goal is to teach children and adults how to swim and be safe in and around the water.

Aqua Learning: Preschool: Preschool Plus: Level 1: Level 2: Level 3: Level 4: Level 5: Level 6: Level:

Shrimp I and II, Pollywog Turtle Seahorse Explorer Submarine Clipper Sailor Adventurer Barracuda Adult

Aqua Learning: Parent and child participation is required. Class size is limited to eight parent-child couples. Pollywog: Class ratio is four to one instructor. Parents are required to be in the water the first four classes. Preschool – Level 3: Class ratio is six children to one instructor. Levels 4 – 6: Class ratio is eight children to one instructor. Adult: Class ratio is eight adults to one instructor.

Which class is right for my child? To ensure your child’s success in the Learn to Swim program, it’s important to register children for the appropriate level. Children who have participated in the swimming program should register according to the last class successfully completed. Each child must pass a particular level before proceeding to the next.

Weekday classes at Alligator’s Creek meet four times a week for two weeks. Saturday morning sessions meet for 35 minutes once a week for eight weeks.

The Aqua Learning levels help children ages 6 months to 3 years become comfortable in and around water and prepares them to learn how to swim. The classes are divided into three sections: Shrimp I, Shrimp II and Pollywog. Please note: Classes may seem repetitive because they are introductions to water.

Aqua Learning: Shrimp I • Ages 6 – 18 months Parent-child or guardian participation in the water is required. The instructor will demonstrate techniques as parents learn how to safely guide children and help them advance at their own pace. Min/Max: 3/8

Special Feature

Sage Chapel Cemetery by Dorris Keeven-Franke

O’Fallon Historic Preservation Commission member and local historian n Veterans Memorial Parkway west of Sonderen Street sits a quiet one-acre plot of ground that transports a visitor to an earlier time when many of its residents were enslaved. Samuel Keithly brought his family and property to what is today’s City of O’Fallon, in the early 1800s. Keithly became one of the largest slave owners in St. Charles County. Among those slaves were John Rafferty and his sisters Ludie, Elsie and Lizzie according to oral history.

O

Oral tradition states that Samuel Keithly gave the land that we now call Sage Chapel Cemetery to his slaves. In 1881, Keithly’s daughter Mahala and her husband Jasper Castlio legally transferred property that included a small church, the African Methodist Episcopal Church, and the land where Sage Chapel Cemetery lay to three trustees of an A.M.E. Church. By the 1890s, there were two other African American churches along today’s Sonderen Street, where a large African-American community lived. Wishwell Baptist Church had begun in 1891. Wishwell was near the creek, on the east side of Sonderen, very close to the Sage Chapel Church building. The other African-American Church was Craven’s Methodist, begun in 1871, near the corner of Elm and Sonderen. Next to Craven’s, directly on the corner, was the town’s African-American school, and across the street was the “Colored Odd Fellow’s” lodge. All of these lay on what is today’s Sonderen Street, which ran north to south from the Wabash Railroad to Sage Chapel Cemetery near the former Keithly plantation. Sonderen served as a racial dividing line. Even though all three of the African-American churches are no longer standing, and the buildings that once housed the school and the Odd-Fellows lodge are largely remodeled, Sage Chapel Cemetery still exists. It is a peaceful, quiet testament to a difficult time. While many of the community

of African Americans left O’Fallon in the late 1950s and early 1960s in search of better job opportunities for their families, some remained. And while many of Sage Chapel’s residents died living in St. Charles, St. Louis or even as far as New Orleans, they were brought home to Sage Chapel when they passed. Eventually members of all three churches would use Sage Chapel to bury their families. Sage Chapel later became a community cemetery and it continued to be used by O’Fallon’s African American community long after all three churches closed. Today, the City of O’Fallon sees that Sage Chapel Cemetery is well-maintained. O’Fallon’s Historic Preservation Commission shares in this mission and is working to see that Sage Chapel is preserved for future generations. Community members also are working to see Sage Chapel Cemetery placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Research tells us that Sage Chapel Cemetery has 38 marked burials yet is estimated to have 115 grave sites on this small one-acre site. It is estimated that nearly twenty percent of its burials were former slaves.

Civic Dance Studio Through May 2019 This great eleven-month dance program encourages students to practice and improve throughout the school year, and culminates with the Year-End Dance Recital. Class participation is crucial in preparing for the recital, so we ask that children commit to attending ALL scheduled classes through May 2019. New students will be accepted into the program at any time; however, students who joined after February 2018 will not be eligible to participate in the recital held June 2019. Classes are held at the Civic Annex, 410 East Elm Street, O’Fallon, MO 63366. Regular participation in Civic Dance Studio is the best way to help students build a progressive foundation for dance as they learn and practice dance steps and master the skills they need.

Tae Kwon Do This six-week Martial Arts program will focus on the traditional Korean form of Tae Kwon Do known as Chung Do Kwan. This style is based on explosive movements, devastating power and self-discipline. All students begin training at the “no belt” level. After learning the eight basics and the first form they will be invited to test for the white belt. Students will progress through a series of techniques and belts at their own pace and will NOT necessarily test each session. Because each student progresses at his or her own pace, testing will be at the discretion of the instructor. Children who would like to progress at a faster pace may register for more than one class.

If you are interested in watching one of the classes to see if it is something your child would be interested in, you may do so the last week of the session. Tyke Kwon Do • Ages 3–5 141201-A 141201-B 141201-C 141201-D
